The beginning of the veterinary profession in Indonesia dates back to the middle of the 19th century. During the Dutch colonization period a development program for large ruminants was started by the 'Nederlandsch-Indië' government. In 1907 this government established a veterinary laboratory, planned by Dr. J.K.F. de Does. The laboratory was then merged with a veterinary training course for Indonesian (bumiputera) 'veterinarians' named 'Cursus tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Veeartsen'. In 1910 the name of the training course was changed to 'Inlandsche Veeartsenschool', and in 1914 the school was named 'Nederlandsch-Indische Veeartsenijschool' (NIVS). During the Japanese occupation (1942-1945) the veterinary school was named 'Bogor Semon Zui Gakko'. After the declaration of independence by Indonesia in August 1945, it became the High School of Veterinary Education. In 1946 the curriculum was extended from 4 to 5 years. Thereafter the school was closed and re-opened a few times due to the changing political circumstances. In 1947 the first Faculty of Veterinary Medicine ('Diergeneeskundige Faculteit') of the University of Indonesia was established in the former building of NIVS at Taman Kencana Campus in Bogor. Between 1948 and 1963, four more veterinary faculties were established in Indonesia: Gajah Mada, Syiahkuala, Airlangga and Udayana. The Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) was established on January 9, 1953. The membership now exceeds 20,000 veterinarians and the association has 15 special interest groups. Since 2008, five new faculties of veterinary medicine have been established, bringing the total to 10.

Between 1763 and 1798 at least 30 young men from the territory of today's Switzerland attended the École Vétérinaire in Lyon. Various archives provide information about their achievements at the school and their later lives. Several biographies exist. The Bernese Albrecht von Haller was particularly devoted to the idea of sending Swiss students to Lyon. He therefore contacted and corresponded with Claude Bourgelat, the founder of the École Vétérinaire in Lyon. Both Albrecht von Haller and Claude Bourgelat engaged in fighting dangerous epizootic diseases such as Contagious Pleuropneumonia or Rinderpest. They both demanded that all sick animals and animals which had contact with the sick ones should be killed.

The first veterinary school in the world was created in Lyon in 1761 by an equerry, Claude Bourgelat (1712-1779), a man renowned for his skill in horsemanship and horse medicine, a man fully able to understand the issues of his time. Aware of the scope of the physiocratic movement and of the need to improve the health of farm animals, he was able to understand the expectations of Henri-Léonard Bertin, Minister of King Louis XV, in proposing the creation of an establishment, breaking with traditional farriery. The creation of the Veterinary School of Lyon would mark a milestone: the consideration of livestock and the establishment of a profession, based on a scientific approach applied to all species. His relations, his communication skills, his European reputation and the opening of the first two schools to foreign students have ensured dissemination of this renewed vision throughout Europe, and provided these schools and their creator with a reputation that they still retain today., (Copyright © 2012 Académie des sciences. The creation of the Veterinary Schools in the 18th century would reveal a plethora of scientists, some of whom would be the precursors of Pasteur, some rivals, others followers collaborators or friends of the Master. Among the precursors let us name Chabbert, Huzard, Girard, Delafond, Renault, Toussaint, Galtier ; among the rivals: Chauveau, Arloing, Cornevin and Thomas; among the followers, collaborators or friends of Pasteur: Bouley, at first a resolute spontaneist, then the most fervent in defense of Pasteur (President of the Academy of Medicine and of the Academy of Sciences) and Nocard, Director of the School in Alfort, an important collaborator of Pasteur. Later, there was Leclainche, who created the International Office of Epizootics, and who was President of the Academy of Sciences; Guérin, who with Calmette developed the BCG vaccination; Ramon, the father of anatoxins (vaccines against diphtheria, and tetanus, combined vaccines, adjuvants to immunity). Thus, the creation of the Veterinary Schools contributed not only to the evolution of the notion of contagion, to the amelioration of animal health and the economics of agricultural production, but also to serious advances in human care, and to the protection of public health., (Copyright © 2012. Concise descriptions are given of the life histories of the 10 members of the classes of 1938 and 1939. All of them initially joined the government service, Hugo, Steenekamp and Schatz spending their entire careers in the South African Veterinary (Field) Services. Mansvelt, the first recipient of the much-coveted Theiler medal, was the 2nd veterinarian to be appointed Director of Veterinary Services, a position specially created for the 'Field' in 1962. Having first established a successful private practice, Hofmeyr was appointed as the 1st full-time professor of surgery of the Onderstepoort Faculty in 1958 and its 1st full-time Dean in 1976. Albertyn opted for a career in public health, becoming director of 1 of the largest local municipal abattoirs. Turner spent virtually his entire career in private practice and was eventually joined by Brown who had served in the British Colonial Veterinary Service for many years. Fick was a government veterinarian for his entire career, first in South Africa, then in the British Colonial Service (for 13 years) and finally returning to South Africa. Like Hugo, Muller filled a senior position in veterinary (field) services before he opted for a farming career.

Ernest Arthur Kendall (1876-1938), whose father founded the first veterinary school in Australia, qualified as a veterinary surgeon, as did three of his brothers. He was commissioned in the Australian Army Veterinary Corps and fought with distinction in both the Boer War and World War I. He established an Australian Veterinary Hospital near Calais, France, in 1917. The Purple Cross Society of Victoria paid for the fit-out and necessary material for the running of the hospital, which treated 24,300 animals before it closed in 1919. In that year, Colonel Kendall resumed his career in the Department of Agriculture Victoria, where he was appointed Chief Veterinary Officer in 1926 and Chairman of the Milk Board in 1934. He worked toward a pure milk supply, enabled the establishment of a laboratory to test milk samples, and looked forward to a well-planned campaign for the eradication of bovine tuberculosis., (© 2011 The Author. The development of veterinary education in Cuba has closely mirrored the political changes the nation has undergone. Veterinary studies in Cuba began in 1907, with an emphasis on clinical (individual-animal) medicine. Over time, the professional curriculum has evolved to meet the needs of the nation. Preventive medicine topics were added to the curriculum in 1959. Food-animal production was taught by a separate college until 1990. In 1991, these topics were incorporated into the professional veterinary medical curriculum, and they continue to be an area of emphasis. All veterinary colleges in Cuba follow a centrally organized, student-centered curriculum. A substantial portion of instruction is delivered at educational units, housed on livestock operations, where students participate in extensive field experiences while receiving didactic instruction. The amount of instructional time devoted to hands-on activities increases as students progress through the five-year curriculum.

Concise descriptions are given of the varied life histories of the students of the classes of 1936 and 1937. Consisting of 14 students, the class of 1936 was the largest of the pre-war classes of the Onderstepoort Faculty. Three of the 6 students in the 1937 class were actually repeating their final year, therefore the total number described below is 17 rather than 20. The detailed analysis of their careers reveals the presence of a remarkable degree of variation. Although all except Brookes, who apparently went directly into the newly established practice of Jack Boswell, initially joined the local government service, most of them became specialists in their disciplines. Four soon established very successful private practices. Five of the 6 who spent their entire careers in the South African Veterinary (Field) Services, finally occupied very senior positions in that division. One of them (Kluge) made a major contribution to the control of tsetse flies in this country and another (Belonje) became a specialist in equine infertility. Four of the graduates opted for a research career, 3 of them also teaching at the Faculty. Of all of these, only De Boom (Anatomy & Embryology), who was a consummate teacher, took on a fulltime position as Professor and Head of the Department when the Faculty became independent from the Onderstepoort Research Institute in 1973. De Lange (Surgery & Gynaecology), however, relinquished his professorship to become a deputy director of the Institute. Sutton became a household name to the many students who passed through his hands in Animal Management. Haig (Virology) became one of the most famous of the many researchers produced by Onderstepoort. Van der Walt showed much promise as a researcher but died at the age of only 45. Two more died before they were 35 years old. Two had sons who also became veterinarians while one's grandson followed in his grandfather's and father's footsteps.

The absorption of the "Real Tribunal del Protoalbeitarato" by the Veterinary Science School of Madrid shows several singularities in relation to the equivalent process in medicine and pharmacy. The conflict and the hegemony of the "Real Tribunal" during almost sixty years from the creation of the Veterinary Science School (1792), has been studied by the traditional historiography with a view fundamentally focused on veterinary aspects. In this article, the process of absorption is investigated in full detail. Also, the relevance of political motivations and their predominance over technical, sanitary or professional motivations are shown. So, the game of institutions and agents which are external to the veterinary science are analysed; specially, the outstanding role performed by the XV Marquis of Cerralbo.

The Class of 1934 included 2 graduates who created milestones for the veterinary profession in South Africa. Jack Boswell was the first Onderstepoort graduate to start his own private practice without ever joining the government service. George van der Wath has the distinction of being the only South African veterinarian to become Chairman of the prestigious South African Wool Board. Ashton Tarr was President of the South African Veterinary Medical Association from 1966-1969. Concise descriptions are given of the varied life histories of the 14 members of the Classes of 1934 and 1935. All except Boswell initially joined government service, one serving mainly in the Colonial Service before eventually returning to South Africa. Three spent their entire careers in the South African Veterinary (Field) Services, finally occupying very senior positions in that division. One ended his career lecturing at a university. Lambrechts was the first veterinarian to occupy the 'resurrected' post of Director of Veterinary Services reserved for field veterinarians. Only one of the graduates opted for research, but went farming after obtaining a DVSc degree. Three spent the greater part of their careers in private practice, Thiel from as early as 1937. Two went into municipal (public health) service, one becoming director of an abattoir. Only one saw military service in World War II. Two died before they were 50 years old. Unfortunately, virtually nothing is known about Erasmus' career. At 97 Thiel holds the distinction of being the oldest Onderstepoort graduate.

The Class of 1933 of the Onderstepoort Faculty was the smallest in its history, having only 1 student for much of the BVSc course. The photographs of the Classes of 1932 and 1933 are both of the customary composite type. Not only the graduates, but also the Dean, Prof. Dr P J du Toit, as well as the presumed Acting Dean, Prof. Dr G de Kock, and the head of the students' hostel, Mr W O Neitz, feature. Concise descriptions are given of the life histories of the 7 graduates. Once again their careers show considerable variation. Although they all initially joined Field Services as state veterinarians, none spent their entire careers in that division. Three spent virtually their entire careers at Onderstepoort, also teaching (part-time) at the Faculty. After a most impressive start to his career, a 4th graduate died at the age of only 30 shortly after leaving Onderstepoort for municipal (public health) service. A 5th spent most of his career in private practice while also serving the veterinary profession for 8 years in the high office of president of its association. One spent the greater part of his career in municipal (public health) service and another went into private practice, eventually also farming with citrus.

With only two students in the final year, the class of 1930 was the 2nd smallest in the history of the Onderstepoort Faculty. Noteworthy is that the class photograph is composed of individual shots of the graduates and that 1 photograph was taken several years after qualification. The photograph of the Class of 1931 is the more customary composite one. The Dean, Prof. PJ du Toit, does not feature in either. Concise descriptions are given of the life histories of the 8 graduates. Again their careers show considerable variation. Two devoted their entire pre-retirement careers to South Africa's Division of Veterinary Services as state veterinarians, both reaching very senior positions. A third died shortly after leaving government service for private practice. None made a career out of research at Onderstepoort, although 2 had short stints at the Institute. One, said to have been the youngest veterinarian in the British Empire, spent the latter part of his relatively short life in a large Johannesburg practice as a specialist surgeon. Another was in military service for virtually his entire career. One had a very varied career, which included government service, private practice, research, public health and the pharmaceutical industry. One spent most of his impressive career in the Colonial Service in Swaziland and Tanganyika (now Tanzania) but eventually returned to private practice in South Africa, whereas another was similarly, but less conscientiously, involved in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Swaziland. Two saw military service during World War II, one as Commanding Officer of a Regiment in the South African Artillery and the other in the South African Veterinary Corps.

The Society of Friends of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover was established in 1926, in times of severe economical distress. According to its statutes its main purpose from the beginning was to complement the governmental budget of the University. During its 80 years of existence the so called "Friendly Society" has contributed to overcome many financial shortages in research, clinics and institutes. In addition it supported veterinary students in need. Some aspects of the Society's history and activities will be communicated.

The available photographs of the Classes of 1928 and 1929 are confusing because they not only bear the same date (1929) but are also composed of individual shots of the graduates rather than the customary group photograph. An answer to the riddle was provided by the presence of J A Thorburn (a member of the Class of 1927) who was a 'super' and qualified in 1928, in the one photograph, together with M C Robinson who also graduated in 1928. The photograph dated 1929 on which 4 graduates and the Dean, Prof. Dr P J du Toit, appear is that of the Class of 1928. The other photograph dated 1929 in which the Dean is absent is therefore dated correctly. Concise descriptions are given of the life histories of the nine graduates. Their careers show considerable variation. Only one of them spent his entire career at the Onderstepoort Research Institute as a very eminent research scientist and professor, and two became well-known professors at the Onderstepoort Faculty. Two were in municipal service for most of their careers and a third ended up working for a municipal authority after spending some time in England and at the Onderstepoort Research Institute. Two spent virtually their entire careers in the field as state veterinarians and a third farmed for most of his career, although he also dabbled in private practice and managed one of the provincial game parks in Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) for some time. Four served in the South African Veterinary Corps during World War II.

The city of Berlin and the Veterinary Faculty were occupied by the Red Army in the beginning of May 1945. After tidying up and first reconstruction as well as reorganisation of the academic stuff the University of Berlin was reopened in January 1946, the semester started in May 1946. At first the number of students at the faculty ranged under 200, the number of graduates was low as well. The numerous vacant chairs could only be filled little by little, in autumn 1949 four chairs were still vacant. Academic stuff, assistants and students were mostly refusing the political system in East Germany. The only slow development upwards was sensitively disturbed by the crisis-like events in 1950/51 and 1956/57.

In 1777 the "Economic Section" was founded as a branch of the "Dutch Society for Sciences" in Haarlem. It is the oldest organization in the area of economy in the Netherlands. The aim of the society was to stop the economic recession in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and to stimulate economic growth by spreading practical knowledge concerning industry and agriculture (including veterinary medicine). The Economic Section tried to achieve this by awarding prizes for the best essays on various problems in society. In this article special attention is paid to those essays with solutions concerning veterinary medicine and animal husbandry sent in during the second half of the 18th and the beginnings of the 19th century, in order to give an impression of the biggest problems at that time. Among various other veterinary subjects, essays dealt with scab in sheep, cattle plague, milk fever and glanders. Because of the insufficient scientific knowledge concerning the causes of infections and internal diseases hardly any practical solutions were sent in. However, the fact that the attempt was made shows how badly improvements in agriculture, cattle-breeding and veterinary medicine were needed. A need which only after more than 50 years after the opening of the first veterinary school in France resulted in the founding of the State Veterinary School in Utrecht in 1821.

Joan Morice, a member of the class of 1927, broke the tradition of male student domination at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty, but it took almost 20 years before other young ladies started following her courageous example. The accompanying photograph is unusual in the sense that the students appear in their then customary white coats instead of graduation regalia and that their dean is absent. Concise descriptions are given of the life histories of the 8 graduates. Their careers show more variation than in previous years. Only 1 of them spent his entire career at the Onderstepoort Research Institute and its Faculty, whereas another left the Institute after several years for a well-known pharmaceutical company in the United Kingdom. Although 1 entered private practice shortly after qualifying, she did not make it her permanent career and sadly died at the early age of 44. Another made the move from the field into private practice fairly late in his productive life. One left South Africa to spend most of his career in the Colonial Service in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and later even joined the FAO in Rome. Two spent their entire careers in the field as state veterinarians--1 died at the age of only 43--and a third moved from the field to a locally-based pharmaceutical company.

Both Sir Arnold Theiler, appointed as Dean in 1920 when the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty was established, and Dr P J du Toit, who succeeded him in 1927, appear in the compound photograph of the class of 1926, constituting the 3rd group of graduates. The probable reason for having 2 deans on the photograph, which was obviously composed from shots taken individually of the outgoing and incoming deans of the faculty as well as of each of the 7 graduates, is initially analysed in this paper. This is followed by short descriptions of the life histories of the graduates. The class of 1926 was probably unique in that 2 of its members, who were employees of the Onderstepoort Research Institute, were granted special permission to study veterinary science at the Faculty. After graduating, most of the class members spent the greater part of their careers as civil servants at Onderstepoort as researchers and part-time teachers in the Faculty, as was customary for many years, or as state veterinarians in the field. Private practice did not feature strongly with them. Noteworthy is that the class produced 3 outstanding scientists, i.e. a world class parasitologist, a very eminent pathologist and Onderstepoort's 1st poultry specialist.

Veterinary education in South Africa started in 1920 when the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty was created. Sir Arnold Theiler was close to retirement when he finally officiated as Dean at the graduation ceremony in 1926 for the class of 1925, constituting the 2nd group of graduates. In this article the fateful circumstances that dictated the final years of Theiler's brilliant career and their effect on his participation in student matters are initially dealt with. This is followed by concise descriptions of the life histories of the ten veterinarians who graduated from the Faculty in 1925. Particularly noteworthy is that although they all started off their careers as civil servants, 4 ended up in private practice. One of them in fact spent by far the greatest part of his career, namely 35 years, as a private practitioner. An unusual incident was the almost fatal shooting of another one, while he was executing his duties as a veterinary field officer, by the son of a farmer.

Veterinary education in South Africa is now more than 80 years old. It started in 1920 when the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty was created as an integral part of the Veterinary Research Institute at Onderstepoort. Sir Arnold Theiler, the founder of Onderstepoort, was its first Dean. This article concerns itself with some of the known and lesser known developments and actions associated with the creation of the faculty and how it was possible to provide suitable lecturing staff. This is followed by concise descriptions of the life histories of the first 8 veterinarians who graduated from the new faculty in 1924 and subsequently spent their entire working life in government service.

Reviewing the history , one is impressed by the remarkable speed with which the grand and powerful idea of creating a new profession of veterinary medicine spread throughout the world (even long before the emergence of electronic transmission). Four factors stand out as key components to this successful dissemination. First, there was the magnificent idea of veterinary education coupled to the powerful motivation of Bourgelat. Second, there existed at the time a tremendous perceived social need for improved animal health, initially for military purposes, the later for issues of food and fiber production. This factor continues to evolve today, with the increasing focus on animal welfare adn companion animal care. Third, support of political leaders with the power to launch the vision was generated. Fourth, of crucial importance was the sustaining of the meme by highly talented and dedicated individuals who modified and improved the original idea to allow for continuing renewal and growth. These four factors seem to have been the most salient features for the achievement of the initiation and the dynamic progression of the new profession.

This year's BVA Congress takes place in Edinburgh, home of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. However, the Scottish capital has been host to more than one veterinary school over the years, as Colin Warwick and Alastair MacDonald explain.

Dingeman van der Vliet (1792-1866) from Zierikzee in province of Zeeland, was one of the first officially trained veterinarians in the Netherlands. He was sent to Paris on the order of Louis Napoleon, king of Holland, at the expense of the Dutch government. In the period of his stay at the Veterinary School in Alfort (1808-1811) he wrote a great number of letters to his parents and friends. His letters give insight in the daily life of the school in Alfort and the festivities in Paris during the reign of the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. In a second article, the laborious built-up of a veterinary practice in those days will be described.

Victor Hofmeister (1829-1894), a chemist, was active between 1862-1894 at the Tierärztliche Hochschule Dresden. His common work with Haubner, Siedamgrotzky and especially Ellenberger supplied basis information on digestibility of feestuffs (sheep, horses) about various clinical-chemical or toxicological questions, but particularly about the digestive physiology in horses, pigs, dogs and ruminants. The main results of the research group in Dresden outlast the last 100 years and represent valuable aspects for present knowledge in this field.

The main aspects of the development of veterinary toxicology from the time of foundation of the veterinary college in Berlin 1790 up to 1945 are being described. The first toxicological experiments were made in 1821. The teaching of veterinary toxicology in Berlin began in 1872 and the foundation of the Department of Pharmacology as a part of Small Animal Clinic was in 1886. The historical development may be divided in four periods. In the first, from 1821-1830, acute and chronical intoxications were examined. The second period, from 1831-1870, has been determined by experimental drug toxicology and the beginning of environmental toxicology. In 1935 were the foundation of an independent Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and in this time the toxicological research reached an internationally important level.

225 years ago at the university of Göttingen J. C. P. ERXLEBEN has founded veterinary medicine as an academic science in Germany. Epochs and changes of this discipline at the oldest university veterinary institution in Germany are described-exemplified with personalities who represented this scientific field at the Georgia Augusta.
