The article presents the solar car activity in connection with a unit on electricity and magnetism. The activity helps in realizing the merits, demerits, and obstructions of solar power. It will initiate students to utilize their imagination, creativity, and higher level thinking skills. This will enable them to develop a hypothesis and institute a plan. It is very important to maintain a cooperative work atmosphere as students have to design, build, test, and race their cars. Besides learning about car-building activities students also learn about downloadable software. Another approach to learn about the activity is self-guided inquiry. This approach encourages them to take their own decisions on the basis of their own thought processes and knowledge. It is possible that schools may not financially assist such projects. Therefore there are various car dealerships, banks, and electric companies from where funds can be arranged. The Iowa Energy Center sponsored several solar car races like the Solar Car Project.
