Abstract

The Globex after-hours futures trading system is experiencing problems, including low volume, strong competition and technological difficulties. Globex, which began operating in Jun 1992, is a computerized joint venture of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and Reuters Holdings PLC. Globex needs to attract institutional business to make its system pay but has been unable to do so. Banks, trading companies and insurance firms that use futures contracts send their orders to the biggest, most liquid markets available, which in off-hours are foreign markets. Moreover, Globex competes with Simex, which is an established market with good liquidity. In the past six months, Globex has been shut down three times by technical glitches, once for six hours.
