As one of the most important margin seas around the west Pacific, the eastern China seas are important sink for terrigenous materials and forms multiple geology structures. So research the composition and spatial distribution of sediments could help us to understand the dynamics mechanism of the marine sedimentary environment, further to comprehend the land-sea interaction process. Based on high spatial resolution sediment survey in the eastern China seas, the distribution diagram of the sediment types was compiled to reveal the space regularities of sediment. In this study, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method was used to identify the controlling factors that are the main controls of the sediment distribution in the study area, which revealed three factors (F1, F2 and –F1) representing grain size categories of >5.75φ, 4.25–5.75φ and 1.50–3.00φ, respectively. F1 represents fine sediments (>5.75φ), -F1 represents coarse sediments (1.50–3.00φ), and F2 represents intermediate-sized sediments (4.25–5.75φ). The sediment transport patterns of the different grain size categories in the eastern China seas are discussed in the context of a comprehensive analysis of sediment grain size composition, material sources, flow patterns, and other factors. The results show that fine-grained sediments represent a "distant" sink of terrigenous material that formed in a stable and low-energy sedimentary environment. The coarse sediment deposits were formed in the late Pleistocene when the hydrodynamic conditions were relatively strong, and the intermediate-sized sediments were distributed in an area with a high concentration of suspension representative of mid-strength hydrodynamic conditions. Abstract The condition of Baiyangdian Lake (BYDL) will improve as the Xiongan New Area evolves and fulfills its role of easing overcrowding and supporting economic growth. Water and sediment samples from BYDL were analyzed to provide information on nitrogen (N) contamination in BYDL. The mean ammonium N (NH 4 +-N), nitrate N, and total N concentrations in the water samples were 0.36, 0.12, and 2.22 mg/L, respectively, and the ranges were 0.003–8.38, 0.06–0.30, and 1.25–10.34 mg/L, respectively. The N concentrations in water gradually increased from the north to the south of BYDL. Sediment at 90% of the sampling sites was in or above the moderately contaminated class (1000–2000 mg/kg) defined in US Environmental Protection Agency total N pollution standards. Positive NH 4 +-N fluxes were found for 28 of the 34 sediment core samples, so the potential for NH 4 +-N being released from sediment was relatively high. The NH 4 +-N fluxes were 5.35–48.76 mg/m2/day, and the mean and maximum fluxes were 8.71 and 48.76 mg/m2/day, respectively. Benthic organisms will be affected more by NH 4 +-N and NH 3 ·H 2 O in the surface sediment pore water (mean concentrations 4.93 and 0.13 mg/L, respectively) than by the other forms of N. This study was performed to determine the distribution and chemical fractions of five heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in sediment from three sampling areas in Swan Lagoon, and their relation to the physiochemical properties of sediment were explored. The results revealed that Cd in sediment from the sand part (SP), muddy sand part (MSP) and sand muddy part (SMP) were potentially highly susceptible and bioavailable since the exchangeable fractions were 21.0%, 27.4%, and 32.1%, respectively, of the total concentrations. A portion of Pb and Zn were observed as reducible fractions owing to their affinity to Fe-Mn; they were able to complex with Fe-Mn oxides and oxyhydroxides in the sediment. A large amount of Cu in the oxidizable fraction may be due to the fact that Cu can easily form stable complexes with organic matter. Cr was overwhelmingly found in the residual fraction, suggesting that Cr was strongly bound in mineral lattices. Enrichment factors (EF) indicated that Cd in three sampling areas suffered severe enrichment, whereas other metals were present in only minor amounts. In addition, Cd may pose a medium to high risk in the MSP and SMP based on risk assessment codes. According to the mean probable effects level quotient, the samples from the MSP and SMP had a 21% probability of toxicity. The multivariate statistical analysis suggested that sediment texture (d0.5, sand and silt), Fe-Mn, and the total organic carbon (TOC) influenced the distribution of the studied metals and their chemical fractions. Surface sediments from five stations within Gonghu Bay in Taihu Lake, China, were sampled for seasonal and spatial metal contamination analysis variations and ecological risks assessment from April 2009 to January 2010. The Contamination Factor (CF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) indicated that the sediments in Gonghu Bay ranged from unpolluted to moderately polluted, except for Cd. The one-way ANOVA analysis results showed that the Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cu concentrations were higher at station 3 (lake inlet) and the Cr, Pb, and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in the spring. Additionally, using BCR' s sequential extraction, the results showed that the fractionated metals Zn and Cd were observed as bioavailable fractions in the sediments, which could have potential moderate mobility in the water system. There was a significant increase in the bioavailable form during winter. The ratio of secondary and primary phrase (RSP) decreased according to the order Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd > Cr. Finally, these results indicated that the sediments of Gonghu Bay were polluted by Cd, Zn, and Cu, which provides a scientific basis for effectively protecting sediments in watershed areas from long-term heavy metal accumulation. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China has undergone rapid urbanization and industrialization over the past few decades, leading to a substantial accumulation of hazardous organic compounds and a significant environmental impact. Forensic analysis of estuarine sediments is critical in order to uncover the contamination history and evaluate the level of contamination of the aquatic system and its ambient regions. A number of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon groups including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biomarkers, and diamondoids were found in representative sediment cores collected in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) with average values determined to be 1,300, 288, and 5.85 ng/g dry weight in core #1 (inner shelf) and 283, 26.8, and 2.06 ng/g dry weight in core #2 (outer shelf), respectively. The results clearly suggest that the contamination in PRE sediment was derived from various inputs including petrogenic, biogenic, and pyrogenic sources. Because diamondoids are naturally absent from modern sediments that are free from petroleum contamination, in addition to the signatures of determined alkylated PAHs and biomarker terpanes and steranes, the presence of trace diamondoid compounds provides further evidence of petroleum contamination in the offshore and coastal areas of the PRE. Abstract: An ultrasound assisted microwave extraction (UAME) method was developed to simultaneously extract five organophosphate (OP) and eight pyrethroid insecticides from sediment. The optimized UAME conditions were to use 100ml of a mixture of hexane and acetone (1:1, v/v) solution as the extraction solvents, and extraction time, microwave and ultrasonic power settings of 6min, 100W and 50W, respectively. Extracts were cleaned using solid phase extraction and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in negative chemical ionization mode and quantification was based on matrix-matched standard solutions along with internal standard calibration. At the spiked concentrations of 1, 5 and 20ng/g dry weight (dw), recoveries of OPs were 77.6–122%, 65.2–128% and 75.6–141% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 10.6–18.1%, 3.1–12.5% and 8.0–35.3%, respectively, while recoveries of pyrethroids were 78.0–101%, 76.4–104% and 71.0–99.5% with RSDs of 10.3–23.5%, 4.7–17.6% and 8.8–18.7%, respectively. Method detection limits ranged from 0.31 to 0.45ng/g dw for the OP insecticides and from 0.27 to 0.70ng/g dw for the pyrethroid insecticides. The newly developed UAME method was validated by comparing it to Soxhlet and sonication extraction methods. Better recoveries were achieved for most OPs by the novel UAME method, whereas there was no significant difference in recoveries for most of the pyrethroids. Abstract: The contamination status of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) was preliminarily investigated in surface sediments collected from the East River during April 2007. The contamination levels of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs ranged from 2.1 to 9.8 with mean concentration of 4.5pg WHO98-TEQg−1 and ranged from 0.042 to 0.45 with mean concentration of 0.19pg WHO98-TEQg−1, respectively. All sediments were characterized by the elevated levels of PCDDs, especially OCDD. Higher concentrations of PCDD/Fs were found in the sediments from Guangzhou and Dongguan. Source analysis revealed that PCDD/Fs in the sediments from Guangzhou were mainly from the secondary copper smelters and steel-making plants, and PCDD/Fs in the sediment from Dongguan were mainly from MSWIs. Abstract: Stream sediments play an important role in the transport and storage of phosphorus in the stream ecosystems. This research investigated the sorption and fraction of P in the sediments of a long-term seriously contaminated river, the Daliao river system, using isotherm sorption and selective sequentially extraction tests. Results indicated that the total content of P in the sediments was 479–1202mgkg−1, depending on iron content in the sediments. The content of potential bioavailable P, including soluble and loosely bound P, Al bound P, Fe bound P, and reductant soluble P was only 10–20% of total P in the sediments of the Hun river and Taizi river, while it was 40–55% in the sediments of the Daliao river, the downstream of the river system. Equilibrium phosphorus concentration without net P sorption (EPC0) was from 0.05 to 0.54mgL−1, with an increasing trend from upstream to downstream, indicating increasingly release potential. On the other hand, the upstream sediment generally sorbed more P than the downstream sediment for each river at the same equilibrium P concentration. The binding energy constant of P on the strong sites of the sediments generally decreased from 2.24 to 2.65Lmg−1 at upstream to 0.41Lmg−1 at downstream or estuary, suggesting that the strong binding sites have been occupied and partly saturated by the phosphate added by point and diffuse sources along the river. On the other hand, molar ratio of Fe to TP contents in the sediments showed sorption capacity of the sediments to P might be under-saturated. The added or sorbed P by the isotherm test was primarily bound to Fe oxides and secondly to Al oxides. Long-term pollution of the river lead to the decrease of P sorption capacity of the river sediment and the increase of P release potential. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Congener specific distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in sediment and mussel (Mytilus edulis) collected from the coast of Bo Sea, China. The median values of BDE-209 and ΣPBDEs (including BDE-17, -28, -47, -66, -71, -85, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183 and -190) were 2.29 and 0.16ngg−1 dry weight in sediment, and 2.43 and 0.68ngg−1 dry weight in mussel, respectively. BDE-209 was the predominant congener (61–99% in mussel and 75–99% in sediment except for one sample with 17%). Different congener patterns (excluding BDE-209) were observed between sediment and mussel, which were attributed to individual congener’s bioaccumulation potential and/or the ability to metabolize. The four most abundant congeners were BDE-47 (40.3%), -99 (22.5%), -71 (8.9%) and -28 (5.8%) in sediment, and -47 (36.4%), -28 (14.5%), -154 (8.6%) and -71 (8.6%) in mussel, respectively. The ratios of BDE-47/BDE-99 and BDE-100/BDE-99 in sediment were lower than those in mussel, indicating higher transformation and uptake rate of BDE-99 in mussel. The biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) of individual PBDE congeners declined with the increase of their logarithm of octanol–water partition coefficients (log K OW) except for BDE-154, indicating congeners with higher log K OW were more likely to retain in sediment. These can be explained with a high affinity of these compounds for carbonaceous geosorbents, and molecular steric hindrance that limits large, very hydrophobic organic compounds from penetrating the cellular membranes. Mai Po Nature Reserve (Hong Kong) is an internationally important wetland for waterbirds. Roundup®, a formulation based on glyphosate, has been used to control the widespread weeds within the reserve for many years but the fate and non-target impact of the herbicide is unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we applied Roundup® by hand-held sprayer to an estuarine and a freshwater pond in the dry season of year 2002. The surface water and sediment were sampled routinely for glyphosate concentrations following one month of application. In situ bioassays using local edible fish species were performed along with the herbicide application. Up to 52% of glyphosate in the surface water was transported to the unapplied regions by wind-driven current in the estuarine pond at 1 DPT (day post treatment). For both ponds, glyphosate concentrations in the water decreased rapidly after 1–3 DPT, but then decreased gradually over time. Both physical adsorption to the bottom sediments and microbial degradation are thought to contribute to these decreases. Interestingly, the persistence of glyphosate in the freshwater pond was longer than in the estuarine system, which is likely due to the considerably higher concentrations of chelating metals (i.e. Cu and Fe) present in the sediment (4.5 and 11-fold higher, respectively) which potentially reduced the bioavailability of glyphosate to the microbial decomposers. Lastly, fishes used in the in situ bioassays (both in applied and unapplied areas) showed similar survival rates, indicating that the use of Roundup® at the provided application rate posed no serious hazard. The pollution status of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the sediments of Haihe River, which is the most polluted among the seven largest basins in China, Dagu Drainage River flowing through a chemical industry zone, and two other rivers flowing into Bohai Sea in Tianjin City, China were investigated. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the sediments from the mainstream of Haihe River were 1.3–26pgI-TEQg−1 dry weight (dw) and 0.07–0.54pgTEQg−1 dw, respectively. Heavy PCDD/Fs and PCBs pollution, with 1264pgI-TEQg−1 dw and 21pgTEQg−1 dw, was found in sediment from Dagu Drainage River. The congener profiles of PCDD/Fs indicated that the principal contamination source was the production of pentachlorophenol (PCP) or PCP-Na in this area. The correlation between PCDD/Fs or PCBs and total organic matter (TOM) showed that PCDD/Fs or PCBs were independent on TOM. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
