ABSTRACT Present day submarine canyons are active conduits for the transfer of large volumes of sediment, carbon and pollutants from continents to oceans. However, the evolution of submarine canyons over geological timescales remains poorly understood due to their erosional nature and low preservation potential. The Late Cretaceous Punta Baja Formation represents a well‐preserved submarine canyon‐fill that evolved on a tectonically‐active ocean‐facing margin. Exposures provide kilometre‐scale continuous strike and dip sections of the 120 m thick and 1.2 km wide feature. An inherited tectonic fabric influenced the location and orientation of canyon incision into fluvial bedrock. The stratigraphic evolution of the Punta Baja submarine canyon is reconstructed from incision to fill, which shows that it remained an active sediment conduit throughout the time represented by the preserved fill. The depositional architecture of the north–south oriented erosionally confined canyon‐fill is asymmetrical, with sub‐vertically stacked channel‐fills to the west, and an overbank confined by the canyon margin to the east. Sedimentary process interactions led to depositional patterns that are considered distinct to submarine canyon fills. Dynamic topography generated by mass‐wasting processes captured sediment and drove knickpoint development, an autogenic mechanism that modifies sediment delivery to the ocean floor. Widespread upstream dipping surfaces in channel‐fills are interpreted as the stratigraphic expression of upstream migrating supercritical‐flow bedforms, which played an important role in sediment storage and transport in the canyon. The steep relief and internal topography of canyons leads to complicated and characteristic confined overbank flow behaviour and depositional patterns. This study provides insight into how processes that are observed in modern canyons are selectively preserved through the lifetime of the canyon and construct or destroy stratigraphy on geological timescales. Grade control structure (GCS) can be used to reduce erosion in river beds. They decrease the river bed scour by changing the flow regime and reducing its velocity. It is required to maintain the stability of these structures against the scour hole that generates downstream of them, so investigating the scour hole characteristics downstream of the GCS is inevitable. In the present research, the equilibrium scour holes downstream of GCS were investigated under three discharges (q=0.00467, 0.00583, 0.00700 m3/s.m) and two different sedimentation conditions (d50=0.082, 1.6 mm). The results show that in the constant GCS geometry and finer sediment, the maximum scour depth (ds) and maximum scour hole length (ls) increase. In the same sedimentary conditions and different geometry, when the slope of the GCS downstream face varied from 90° to 60°, ds increases, but ls decreases. Also, the hydraulic jump forms on the scour hole at high flow intensity, which has an essential influence on the geometry of the equilibrium scour hole. Comparison of ds/Hc between the present study and Ben Meftah and Mossa (2020) has R2=0.891 and RE=10.66%, which reveals acceptable compatibility between the present study results and previous ones. Naumure Multipurpose Project (NMP) featuring a 169 m high Concrete Face Rock Filled Dam (CFRD) is the proposed reservoir project in the West Rapti River with an installed capacity of 218.34 MW. Most of the rivers in Nepal carry significant sediment loads that will consequently catalyze reservoir sedimentation. This phenomenon prevails as the primary factor in reducing reservoirs useful life, making ineffective for both flood control and hydroelectricity generation. Ultimately, such process of sedimentation has adverse impacts on projects economic feasibility and long-term sustainability. Therefore, the objective of this research was to examine the expected sediment deposition pattern in the NMP reservoir throughout its operational period by employing 1D HEC-RAS model to simulate the sedimentation process. The model was simulated for 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years. Yang's equation as a sediment transport function, Active layer as a bed sorting method and Toffaleti as a fall velocity method were best suited for the river reach. The delta deposition was formed between 11 km and 22 km upstream of the dam region in the Jhimruk river, with the sediment deposition depth reaching peaks of about 23 m, 38 m, 39 m, 41 m and 49 m in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years, respectively. Similarly, the delta deposition was formed between 13 km and 33 km upstream of dam region in the Madi river, with the sediment deposition depth reaching peaks of about 47 m, 62 m, 60 m, 68 m and 75 m in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years respectively. Headcutting of delta deposition occurred between 20 and 30 year due to high flood during low stage of reservoir. Furthermore, the study revealed that about 6.22%, 11.61%, 15.94%, 22.96% and 25.65% of the storage capacity of NMP reservoir will be depleted in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years respectively. Submarine fan reservoirs are important accumulation zones for oil, gas, and natural gas hydrates, offering significant potential for hydrocarbon exploration. During the deposition period of the Sanya Formation in the southern part of the Changchang Sag of the Qiongdongnan Basin, a large submarine fan developed. However, the internal structure, source-sink system, and formation mechanism of this fan remain poorly understood, posing significant challenges to exploration in this area. This paper examines the source-to-sink sedimentary processes and deposition of submarine fans, using the Changchang Sag, in the Qiongdongnan Basin in the Northern South China Sea, as an example, which will provide valuable general guidance for deep water oil and gas exploration. Based on the theories of seismic stratigraphy and seismic sedimentology, this paper utilizes techniques such as seismic facies analysis, seismic attribute optimization, paleogeomorphology reconstruction, and source-to-sink sedimentary systemanalysis to analyze the 3D seismic data of the study area. Research indicates that the Sanya Formation in the Changchang Sag of the Qiongdongnan Basin comprises three depositional units: submarine fan, feeder channel, and Semi-deep marine to deep marine mudstone. The submarine fan is a fan formed by the coupling and convergence of submarine fans sourced from the southwest and southeast. Internally, it is divided into three sub-facies: the proximal fan of the sand-rich submarine fan, the main body of the sand-rich submarine fan lobes, and the distal lobes of the sand-rich submarine fan. The submarine fan sourced from the southwest extends nearly north-south and is primarily fed by sediment transported through three large, banded ancient valleys. The sedimentary filling is characterized by three-phase progradation. The submarine fan sourced from the southeast extends nearly east-west and is primarily fed by sediment transported through a single large, banded ancient valley. The sedimentary filling is characterized by two-phase lateral accumulation. During the deposition period of the Sanya Formation, certain areas of the southern uplift belt were exposed for extended periods and subjected to weathering and erosion. Sediments are transported to large ancient valleys through small supply channels. A large number of sediments were transported to the southern slope of the Changchang sag through the provenance channel system such as large ancient valleys and slope belts and deposited in the center of the sag. These make up a complete system of large ancient uplifts and submarine fan source-to-sink sedimentary systems. Rapid urbanization has an accelerated impact on catchment hydrology and geomorphology due to land use and land cover changes as a result of anthropogenic development activities in river catchment areas that cause increased surface runoff and higher sediment yield. The present study investigates the channel changes and sediment transport phenomena, including bed material movement from the upstream to the estuaries of the Pahang River Basin, Peninsula Malaysia. The river geometry survey associated with the spatial variation in sediment transport has confirmed that changes in river bed profile occur due to the erosion and sediment deposition along the Pahang River. The sediment size distribution for the Pahang River was very coarse sand and gravel after the December 2014 flood. The river geometry survey showed a gentle slope that can induce lower discharge typical of alluvial rivers relating to flood events. To maintain a reasonable sediment regulation system in the Loess Plateau, it is critical to determine the effects of check dam construction on sediment production and topographic changes. An indoor simulation experiment was conducted to investigate sediment production at the outlet section of the gully and micro‐topographic changes within the channel before and after dam construction. The results showed that check dam significantly affected the run‐off and sediment transport processes in the watershed. Specifically, the cross‐sectional morphology index (η) and the width‐depth ratio increased by 10.23% and 40.44%, respectively, while sediment content and particle size decreased by 39.29% and 18.58%, respectively. Additionally, the relative importance of section parameters and micro‐topographic parameters that affect sediment production rate and particle size was ranked using the random forest algorithm. The roughness after check dam construction was identified as a relatively important topographic factor affecting sediment production and particle selection by erosion. River channels are maintained by coordination between flow hydraulics, sediment supply, riparian vegetation, and sediment transport. This coordination is challenging to understand in natural flow regimes, where climatic and environmental drivers produce episodic flood and sediment supply events. To better understand the response of channels to flood sequences, we have undertaken laboratory flume experiments on sediment storage and export across a sequence of alternating hydrographs. Our experiments indicate that accumulated sediment storage before floods predicts sediment transport during floods, with sediment storage depletion during floods causing a nonlinear variation of sediment‐transport rates through time. Likewise, sediment storage between floods follows a growth‐to‐saturation pattern, whereby the sediment transport gradually increases toward the sediment feed rate depending on the occupation of available sediment storage zones. To describe these non‐linear variations, we developed a mathematical model which represents sediment transport and storage as a coupled dynamical system. This work highlights the crucial role that within‐channel sediment storage and its history play in determining sediment export in rivers. Plain Language Summary: The amount of sediment moving in a river channel largely determines its stability during floods; therefore, numerous ecological and engineering applications utilize predictions of sediment‐transport rates in rivers. Most prediction models assume that the force of the water and the size of sediment are the main variables needed to predict sediment‐transport rates. This implies that no information about the historical patterns of sedimentation in the channel is required to predict the amount of moving sediment. To test this implication, we conducted laboratory experiments on sediment transport across a sequence of floods. In contrast to existing prediction methods, we determined that the amount of sediment accumulated in a channel is a leading predictor of sediment transport both between and during floods. We characterized this dependence of sediment transport on the history of sediment storage and described it with a mathematical model. Sedimentary landforms on Earth and other planetary bodies are built through scour, transport, and deposition of sediment. Sediment connectivity refers to the hypothesis that pathways of sediment transport do not occur in isolation, but rather are mechanistically linked. In dryland river systems, one such example of sediment connectivity is the transport of fluvially deposited sediment by wind. However, predictive tools that can forecast fluvial‐aeolian sediment connectivity at meaningful scales are rare. Here we develop a suite of models for quantifying the availability of river‐sourced sediment for aeolian transport as a function of river flow, wind regime, and land cover across 168 km of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, USA. We compare and validate these models using topographic changes observed over 10 years in a coupled river sandbar‐aeolian dunefield setting. The models provide a path forward for directly linking fluvial hydrology with the management and understanding of aeolian landscapes. Vegetation plays a key role in trapping sediments and further controlling pollutants. However, few studies were conducted to clarify the erosion and deposition laws of sediments and the influence factors caused by vegetation patch properties, which is not conducive to the revelation of riverbank protection and erosion prevention. Therefore, this study investigated the change in scouring and deposition characteristics around submerged vegetation patches of nine kinds of typical configurations and their influencing factors. Vegetation patches were assembled from three vegetation densities (G/d = 0.83, 1.3, and 1.77, representing dense, medium, and sparse, respectively), and three vegetation patch thicknesses (dn = 170, 400, and 630, representing narrow, usual, and wide, respectively), to measure vegetation patch property influences. Flow velocity, scouring, and deposition characteristics under nine patches were determined by a hydraulic flume experiment, three-dimensional acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV), and three-dimensional laser scanner, and then ten geometry and morphology indices were measured and calculated based on the results of laser scanning. Results showed that both vegetation patch density and thickness were positively related to the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) above the vegetation canopy, and only vegetation patch density was negatively related to the flow velocity above the vegetation canopy. The relation between the product of density and vegetation patch thickness and erosion area in planform (EA) showed a power function (R2 = 0.644). Both density and vegetation patch thickness determined the scouring degree, but deposition location and amount did not rely on each one simply. On average, medium density showed the smallest maximum erosion length (MEL), EA, deposition area in planform (DA), and average deposition length (ADL) and a minimum of the above parameters also occurred at narrow vegetation patch thickness. The shape factor of the erosion volume (SFEV), the shape factor of the deposition volume (SFDV), ADL, and MEL of medium density and narrow thickness vegetation patch (G/d = 1.3, dn = 170) were significantly smaller than that of other types of patches. DA and equivalent prismatic erosion depth on the erosion area (EPED) were significantly linearly related (R2 = 0.766). Consequently, most sediment was deposited close to the vegetation patch edge. It is suggested that vegetation patch thickness and density should be given to control sediment transport. In particular, natural vegetation growth changes vegetation patch density and then alters vegetation patch thickness. Management and repair need to be first considered. Considering currently operative European and worldwide regulations, preserving and/or improving the state of remnant alluvial floodplains is a high-priority goal for experts. One of the threats is the decrease of lateral connectivity: due to the erosion in the mainstem riverbed and the sedimentation of the floodplain and its channels, the bed elevation gap slowly increases between the main channel and the side branches and oxbows of the floodplain. Without revitalization measures, this progress predicts severe ecological consequences. As an example, and as a continuation of our earlier work, we considered the Gemenc floodplain forest along the Danube, in Hungary. We set up a two-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic and sediment transport computational model to describe floodplain deposition dynamics. Model validation was carried out with historical data, i.e., two ground elevation sets measured in 1990 and in 2009, respectively. Our aim was 1. to show, how coarse resolution measured data can be used for validating a large-scale model in terms of sediment deposition processes, and 2. to interpret the first results on some areas exposed to strong deposition, after validation. Showing good agreements in three pillars: magnitude of estimation, spatial tendencies and spatial patterns, the model was deemed valid. We were also able to observe a clear gradient, along which areas could be categorized with high, medium and small extent of sediment deposition. With this model, the sediment dynamics in the Gemenc floodplain forest can be assessed, with special attention to the impact analysis of restoration measures to improve lateral connectivity conditions. Estimates sediment transport in Iraqi Rivers are essential for effective rivers management, particularly when delivery rates is potential threat to environment and ecological systems. Therefore, this research was performed for estimating sediment transport rates in a certain reach from Euphrates River downstream Al Hindiyah Barrage and examine the stat of Entrainment Rate Esi of bed sediments under a unsteady stream flow. In spite of complexity and the difficulty of conducting measurements, the sediment load were measured with satisfactory perfection to achieve acceptable results for monitoring this river reach. The acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) technique were used to measure velocity distribution, cross section profiles, and using (Helley-Smith) sampler to collect bed load samples from twenty cross sections downstream Al Hindiya Barrage. The investigation of suspended sediment concentration in vertical profiles has consisted of using an Entrainment rate relation (Esi), also for evaluating materials concentration near the bed and the upward, the vertical distribution of material particles was examine in the water column. The measurement results are clarified that there are many regions of river covered with high sedimentation, but the suspended load is prevalent mode of transport with average value 97.313%. The observed suspended sediment yield in the river reach was ranged from 386.645 ton/day to 6588.58 ton/day during the drought condition and low level of water discharge and may change with discharge change. While bed load yield ranged between 0.270 ton/day to 5.394 ton/day. The investigation is represented a non-equilibrium condition in sediment transport is prevalent circumstance in channel system. It is tested the relation of Ei against limited grainsizes data and skin shear velocity U*skin then analyzed the regression. The result is shown that near-bed entrainment, evaluated at 15% of the flow depth, decreases with the ratio of settling velocity to skin-friction shear velocity due to its role in determining bed load-layer concentrations. The fit relation for R2 = 0.48 and correlation r = -0.55 are shown that outstanding an association between maximal flow resistance and sediment diffusivities, this is probably because bed-form prompt by turbulence flow which caused nonlinear dependence. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the riverbed deformation, bank erosion, and channel changes in the lower Sangu River basin using a depth-averaged 2-D flow model where suspended sediment transport is dominant and its flow characteristics are influenced by active tides. A 45 km long area including the river mouth is computed using the 2-D model, and the results are compared with the observed channel changes. The computation results show that bed deformation and channel change are mainly caused during the ebb tide period of the spring tide particularly in an area of about 10 km from the river mouth. The detail study domain calculation results show that the flow concentration at the bend area causes the bed erosion there, and the eddy separated from the main stream causes the sediment deposition at the inner bank, while this eddy is not developed at the outer bank, resulting in the bank erosion there. Through these investigations, the characteristics and mechanisms of the morphodynamics in the lower Sangu River reach, particularly the potential of the combination of tides and floods to enhance riverbed deformations and the associated bank shifts, have been clarified. We investigate how the physical forcing factors of river discharge and winds affect sediment delivery to, and retention within, mangrove-lined coastal regions. We use an idealized numerical model, broadly similar to the Firth of Thames deltaic system in New Zealand, to isolate and explore the underlying processes without some of the complexities of the real system. Total sediment transport and the relative contributions of riverine and bed-sourced sediment into the forest are assessed using a transect along the edge of the forest region. The model results demonstrate that both river discharge and winds alter the distribution of sediment transport, and that the spatial patterns relate to different regions of the river plume. At the river mouth (the near-field region), irrespective of the discharge employed, sediment fluxes are directed into the mangrove forest, indicating an accretionary environment consistent with satellite observations. Here, contributions from the riverine and bed-sourced sediments are similar. For small to medium discharge scenarios (up to ∼ 280 m 3 s - 1 , flow speeds ∼ 0.6 m s - 1 ), mass loads increase with river discharge. However, in the case of large discharge events, the high momentum in the near-field region allows the river plume to effectively transport sediment through the full width of forested region and out of the forest front. In the mid- and far-field regions of the plume, tidal influences also play a stronger role. Suspended sediment is primarily composed of bed-sourced material and transported out of the forest. Weaker winds are found to affect the far- and mid-field regions of the river plume. Stronger winds are able to reshape the entire plume structure, also including the near-field, such that sediment deposition is enhanced when winds are directed towards the forest. Erosional perturbations from changes in climate or tectonics are recorded in the profiles of bedrock rivers, but these signals can be challenging to unravel in settings with non‐uniform lithology. In layered rocks, the surface lithology at a given location varies through time as erosion exposes different layers of rock. Recent modeling studies have used the Stream Power Model (SPM) to highlight complex variations in erosion rates that arise in bedrock rivers incising through layered rocks. However, these studies do not capture the effects of coarse sediment cover on channel evolution. We use the "Stream Power with Alluvium Conservation and Entrainment" (SPACE) model to explore how sediment cover influences landscape evolution and modulates the topographic expression of erodibility contrasts in horizontally layered rocks. We simulate river evolution through alternating layers of hard and soft rock over million‐year timescales with a constant and uniform uplift rate. Compared to the SPM, model runs with sediment cover have systematically higher channel steepness values in soft rock layers and lower channel steepness values in hard rock layers. As more sediment accumulates, the contrast in steepness between the two rock types decreases. Effective bedrock erodibilities back‐calculated assuming the SPM are strongly influenced by sediment cover. We also find that sediment cover can significantly increase total relief and timescales of adjustment toward landscape‐averaged steady‐state topography and erosion rates. Because different rocks erode at different rates, changes in rock type also impact river slopes. Ideally, we could "read" rock strength and the past history of climate and tectonics from river elevation profiles. To achieve this, we need models—equations—that describe how climate, tectonics, and rock strength influence river evolution. In this study, we compare two numerical models for predicting river erosion over time. The simpler model, commonly used to interpret climate, tectonics, and rock properties from real landscapes, assumes the river bed is entirely bedrock, without any sediment. The other model includes both erosion and sediment deposition on the river bed, which affects erosion rates. We calculate river erosion through alternating strong and weak rock layers. We find that including sediment causes river sections in weak rocks to be steeper and sections in strong rocks to be less steep than predicted by the simpler model. Our results can explain why previous research has found large differences between field and laboratory measurements of rock erodibility. Dead storage of reservoir usually designed by soil erosion rate of catchment area result in certain year without considering land use and precipitation dynamic in the catchment and sedimentation distribution analysis at the bottom of the reservoir as well. Development of protocol is needed for more accurate prediction of reservoir sediment transport to describe the real condition and accommodate data limitations. It will give good perspective in design, operation and maintenance strategy for reservoir. The proposed protocol is consisted of long-term soil erosion prediction, modelling long-term sediment discharge, modelling spatial-temporal reservoir sediment transport and predicting reservoir sediment volume and distribution in the future. The case study is in Wonogiri reservoir, Indonesia. Simulation of the proposed protocol at the case study began by obtaining long-term soil erosion prediction from 1993 - 2019. Sediment discharge was modelled from soil erosion and synthetic long-term hydrographs using the FJ Mock method and validated with sediment rate measured directly in the field. Reservoir sediment transport model was using MIKE software. The simulation gives volume and distribution of sedimentation validated by bathymetry result of the reservoir. Prediction of future sedimentation was using the modular regression method. This protocol promotes spatial reservoir sediment transport model and sedimentation prediction by modular regression. Dam removal is increasingly considered as a river restoration tool for impoundments that harm the environment or have exceeded their lifespan. However, few studies report the ecological consequences of large dam removal.We performed a multiple before‐after/control‐impact (mBACI) study to investigate the consequences of the decommissioning of a large dam (42 m high) on instream habitat and invertebrate communities in a temperate, forested catchment of northern Spain.Before decommissioning, lack of fine sediments and high concentrations of manganese and iron occurred below the dam but decreased downstream. Invertebrate taxa richness and diversity were reduced, and pollution‐sensitive taxa were missing just below the dam.The drawdown of the reservoir, the first step towards its decommissioning, mobilized stored sediments causing frequent turbidity peaks downstream, which nevertheless, caused no detrimental effects on macroinvertebrate communities. One year after drawdown, the communities downstream from the dam, as well as those in the newly formed stream in the area formerly impounded by the reservoir, became very similar to those in control reaches, showing a successful restoration project.Synthesis and applications. Dam decommissioning helps restore instream habitats and facilitates the recovery of invertebrate communities in a very short time frame if there are nearby sources of potential colonizers. Slow drawdown reduces the transport of the sediments accumulated in the reservoir and their potential downstream impacts, even more if prior to drawdown the reservoir is kept full for years to promote the deposition of sediments in marginal areas that will later be readily colonized by trees. Slopes adjacent to the Bahamian carbonate platform revealed a large variety of depositional processes. In this study, we present a synthesis summarizing 109,000 km2 of bathymetric and reflectivity data with ∼7,900 km of seismic lines and 311 m of sediment cores that were obtained over the last 50 years. These data are used to develop a conceptual model of sedimentation patterns on Quaternary carbonate slope systems and their interaction with the adjacent shallow‐water carbonate platforms. Our data highlight that during the Quaternary, factors controlling large‐scale sedimentation on Bahamian slopes have numerous similarities as they have higher sedimentation rates during interglacials. At a small scale, every slope has its own characteristics that are contemporary controlled by two main characteristics: (a) facies on the adjacent shallow‐water platform, and (b) the impact of shallow‐ and deep‐water currents. Large‐scale tectonics influence sediment deposition as it determines the position of the islands and impacts platform facies distribution. Plain Language Summary: The factors that allow sediment to be exported from carbonate platforms to the deep‐sea need discussion. To gain a better understanding of the processes involved, the sedimentary archives of the slopes connected to these carbonate platforms are consulted. The sediments encountered vary and range from grains finer than 20 μm to coarse sandy sediments, a few millimeters in size. To understand the different processes that export those different types of sediment, we analyze various slopes of the Bahamas, a well‐known pure carbonate platform system. We used both numerical data (bathymetry, reflectivity, seismic) and sediment samples from this area and compared those records for the different Bahamian slopes. We highlighted that every slope displays a different sediment record; for every slope transect the adjacent platform facies together with deep‐sea processes (currents) determine the sediment distribution. Sedimentation in the harbors' basins is an environmental phenomenon that frequently disrupts safe shipping and necessitates costly dredging operations. The layout of harbors and the permeability of protective structures such as breakwaters influence sediment transport within harbor basins. Thus, through a multistep framework, this study investigates the sedimentation management issues for the Egyptian proposed Ezbet Elborg fishing harbor based on field measurements and a numerical morphodynamic coastal modeling system (CMS). First, field measurements were analyzed and evaluated for acquiring a full grasp of the research area's bathymetry and hydrodynamics. Second, a two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulation CMS model was set up and calibrated against field measurements wherein the developed CMS model highly correlated with actual measurements by 97%. CMS results demonstrate that the predominant NNW wave with the formed longshore current on both the harbor's sides affects sediment accumulation within the harbor's basin. Third, 100 simulations for the proposed harbor including different structural modulation scenarios affecting the sedimentation issue were investigated via the calibrated CMS model. Finally, an exploratory data analysis (EDA) is performed via correlation matrix and ANOVA test for the CMS's scenarios' results to gain an in-depth view of the relation between the harbors' layout and the structural characteristics with the sedimentation volumes. Results showed that breakwaters' orientation affects sediment accumulation more than its length. Also, breakwater permeability and basin width are significantly affecting sediment accumulation. Ultimately, the current study makes a substantial contribution to integrated coastal structure management (ICSM) by helping coastal stakeholders to mitigate the negative impacts of the harbors' sediment deposition aiming at sustaining both environmental and economic aspects. Failaka Marina in Kuwait is experiencing a severe noncohesive sedimentation problem. The samples collected at the seven locations along the beach showed that the beach has a uniform grain-size diameter, meaning it is poorly graded sand. The sampling at the tip of the southern breakwater showed that the shoaling is mainly sand. The suspended-sediment concentration varies from 0.025 kg m–3 to 1.2 kg m–3, whereas the mean concentration at the marina entrance is 0.85 kg m–3. The time series of the suspended solids over a year in the seawater surrounding Failaka Island shows a range of 8 to 48,069 ppm. Such a considerable variation in suspended load is due to the massive amounts of dredging and spoil disposal at Boubyan Island and Basra Port (Iraq) when a high sediment load moves around Failaka Island with a concentration of more than 40,000 mg L–1. Annual sedimentation is about 2.35 m y–1, which is responsible for blocking the main entrance for navigation. Kuwait's Ministry of Communication allocates $4 to $6 million annually for dredging and disposal activities. This study evaluates the six marina entrance modification scenarios to determine the best scenario that achieves a measurable reduction in sedimentation rate in the Marina. Six marina breakwater modifications were studied, and annual sedimentation rates were numerically computed. The study use Coupled MIKE 21/3 to simulate hydrodynamic conditions for cohesive sediment transport in a problem area. Field data from 2015 calibrated and validated the model. The primary sediment-moving force is SE wind and sea-swell waves. Littoral drift along Failaka Island's southern coastline and high suspended-sediment concentration result in littoral drift and settling. The best scenario showed a 28% sedimentation reduction and a 26% reduction in maintenance dredging costs from the six studied scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Confluences are dynamic morphological nodes that are found in all river networks. In mountain regions, they are influenced by hydraulic and sedimentary processes that occur in steep channels during extreme events in small watersheds. Sediment transport in the tributary channel and aggradation in the confluence can be massive, potentially causing overbank flooding and sedimentation into adjacent settlement areas. Previous works dealing with confluences have mainly focused on lowland regions, and those that have focused on mountain areas have used sediment concentrations and channel gradients that are largely under-representative of mountain river conditions. The presented work contributes to filling this research gap with 45 experiments that use a large-scale physical model. Geometric model parameters, the applied grain size distribution, and the considered discharges represent the conditions at 135 confluences in South Tyrol (Italy) and Tyrol (Austria). The experimental program allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the effects of (i) the confluence angle, (ii) the tributary gradient, (iii) the channel discharges, and (iv) the tributary sediment concentration. In contrast to most research dealing with confluences, results indicate that, in the presence of an intense tributary sediment supply and a small tributary-to-main-channel discharge ratio (0.1), the confluence angle does not have a decisive effect on confluence morphology. Adjustments to the tributary channel gradient yielded the same results. A reoccurring range of depositional geomorphic units was observed in which a deposition cone transitioned to a bank-attached bar. The confluence morphology and tributary channel gradient rapidly adjusted, tending towards an equilibrium state to accommodate both water discharges and the sediment load from the tributary. Statistical analyses demonstrated that the confluence morphology was controlled by the combined channel discharge and the depositional or erosional extent was controlled by the sediment concentration. Applying conclusions drawn from lowland confluence dynamics could misrepresent depositional and erosional patterns and the related flood hazard at mountain river confluences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topography plays a critical role in soil migration and redistribution, but few studies have been conducted to quantify its effects on sediment deposition. In this study, we established a physical simulation and analysis framework to investigate the erosional and depositional impacts of two-dimensional slope terrain, specifically applied to Xiannangou small watershed in the loess hilly region. The results showed that the slope gradient, slope length, and slope shape have significantly influence the distribution of soil erosion and deposition. The magnitude of the erosion/deposition rate (Yr) determines the relative intensity of slope erosion and deposition, where Yr < 0 indicates erosion and Yr > 0 signifies deposition. The erosion rate on straight slope exhibited a positive correlation with slope length, while the erosion/deposition rate on concave and convex slopes exhibited fluctuations with slope length. Soil erosion predominantly occurred along the main flow line and the middle slope, aligning with the observed distribution of gully and slope erosion in the field. The sediment deposition was primarily concentrated on the lower slope or the lowest outlet of the basin, notably in gullies and gentle slopes where the terrain slows, especially during transition from steep to gradual slopes. These results can effectively predict the relative erosion/sedimentation rate of two-dimensional slopes, significantly contributing to a comprehensive understanding of how topography influences soil erosion and deposition. This study thoroughly considers the role of sediment deposition in the soil erosion process, providing a more accurate reflection of soil erosion/deposition in small watersheds. Field reconnaissance has difficulty in providing information on topographic features of debris flow in vegetation-covered mountain regions. The study used drone-captured multispectral imaging, digital terrain models, and geomorphic indices to investigate the sources and erosion patterns of gravelly debris flows in mountainous areas. Geomorphic indices, including the topographic wetness index (TWI), stream power index (SPI), sediment transport index, terrain ruggedness index (TRI), and the vegetation index normal differential water index (NDWI), were used to identify key topographic and hydraulic characteristics that contribute to the initiation of gravelly debris flows. The analysis revealed that the debris flows originated from the softening of yellow soil and the dislodging of gravel in loess areas, both induced by surficial water infiltration. Areas with high TWI and SPI values were vulnerable to erosion from surficial water, leading to the formation of erosion gullies. Likewise, regions with high TWI and NDWI values were likely starting points for upstream landslides. Conversely, areas characterized by low TWI and TRI values but high NDWI were prone to downstream sediment deposition. Drone-based multispectral imaging, augmented by geomorphic and vegetation indices, effectively captures the characteristics of vegetation-covered areas, thereby enhancing debris flow field investigations in an inaccessible mountain area. Sediment deposition at the bottom of artificial reservoirs has become a worldwide problem. This comprises a dual issue that is, in the first place, associated with the reduction in storage capacity and lifetime of large reservoirs. The second aspect comprises the threat that the sediment represents for the dam structure. This research is mainly aimed at identifying and inferring the main sediments' triggering processes through a rigorous analysis of deposition shapes in a large reservoir. For identifying the main deposition shapes, a sequential methodology was designed and developed comprising the following stages. First, an analysis of XYZ cartography from bathymetric development was conducted. Then, a shapes categorization was developed that comprises the identification of six types of shapes based on four parameters: slope continuity, slope break, absolute and relative slope, and arc configuration. The third stage comprised a visualization and spatial calculation of shapes through GIS-based cartography. The fourth stage comprised an interpretation of deposition shapes processes: for that, a dual analysis was developed. First, an analysis based on fluvial sediments transport processes was realized. The second stage implied an analysis of the dam influence on fluvial hydrodynamics and sediments transport. Results comprised a quantitative assessment of each shape as well as physical processes identification and interpretation, generating a robust equivalence between shapes and triggering processes. This research proved successful for the identification and characterization of the main deposition and transport processes that may help to prevent, palliate, and/or correct phenomenon of silting in large reservoirs. As climate warms, hydrology and geomorphology in glacierized catchments are evolving, changing sediment export from these catchments, thus impacting downstream ecosystems and communities. Currently, much uncertainty persists regarding interactions among geomorphic processes that evacuate sediment from glacierized catchments. Here, we present a catchment‐scale numerical model of subglacial and proglacial sediment transport with debris meltout processes. We apply the model in a Monte Carlo framework to suspended sediment data collected over 2014–2020 from the Fieschertal catchment in the Swiss Alps, assessing possible combinations of geomorphic processes responsible for suspended sediment discharge. The ensemble of model outputs quantifies the interaction of different geomorphic processes, including the trade‐off between bedrock erosion and sediment previously stored in the catchment. Model runs suggest that, at some periods, up to 20% of the sediment leaving the glacier is deposited in the proglacial area relative to the catchment's total sediment discharge. This shows that the model captures the proglacial area change from sediment source to sediment sink in different hydrological and glaciological conditions. Furthermore, the findings highlight the impact of glacier retreat on the catchment's sediment dynamics, which both reduces the proglacial area's slope and introduces additional sediment to the proglacial area through debris meltout. The model outputs and the parameters quantify the interaction among geomorphic processes, yielding key insights into the drivers of sediment transport in alpine regions. The implications of these interactions are discussed in the context of interpreting processes responsible for controlling erosion rates from glacierized regions and modeling sediment transport in glacierized catchments. A massive landslide occurred in May 2015 in the Mt. Hakusan Sennindani area, leading to the discharge of a substantial amount of sediment into the Tedori River. We conducted a cross‐sectional analysis of secondary data to assess the potential effects of discharged sediments on the downstream environment, including long‐term turbidity in rivers, alterations in fish habitats, and groundwater depletion. To analyse the spatio‐temporal changes in the river floodplain elevation and paddy fields, aerial photographs and airborne light detection and ranging data were assessed using the ArcGIS software. After the landslide, the turbidity of the Tedori River increased and continued flowing turbid for approximately 6 months. Turbid water spread in the alluvial fan through the irrigation canal network and sediment was deposited in the paddy fields, leading to a reduction in infiltration rates. The groundwater level in the alluvial fan area decreased by more than 2.0 m following the 2015 Sennindani landslide. The sediment deposition in the river floodplain increased by 0.58 m from 2013 to 2015 (pre‐ and post‐landslide). The sediment from upstream destroyed the spawning sites of the Ayu fish along the Tedori River, leading to a decrease in the number of eggs laid in 2015 and 2016 to the lowest levels. The Tomiyo fish disappeared in 2016 and 2017, downstream of the alluvial fan, which received water recharge from the Tedori River. Moreover, Chum salmon showed an exceptionally high anadromous movement towards the Tedori River from coastal areas during 2015 and 2016. In conclusion, discharged sediment from deep upstream landslides can have various adverse impacts on downstream ecosystems, and recovery to their original state may require a considerable amount of time. Human-induced shoreline instability is a widespread issue among the world's Mega Deltas. Out of 120 million tons/year of sediment, 30 million tons/year reached Damietta promontory before the entire operation of Aswan High Dam (AHD), which blocks most of that sediment. This study uses remote sensing techniques to investigate the Land Use Land Cover Changes (LULCC) and the shoreline dynamics around Damietta promontory. In addition, more attention was devoted to the challenges of Damietta Harbour, which regularly suffers from inlet closure using a filed validated morpho-dynamic model addressing sediment transport and erosion problem at the eastern part. The LULCC based Maximum Likelihood approach shows that the developed areas were doubled from 1984 to 2018. Besides, within the Area of Interest (AoI), 8.961 km2 were eroded during the period (1984–2000), while 2.7046 km2 were eroded during (2000–2018). Change detection technique showed that accretion area was 1.8991 and 2.4909 km2 for the periods 1984–2000 and 2000–2018, respectively. Six scenarios were tested to investigate the best combinations of interventions to mitigate the challenge of siltation inside the harbour entrance and the erosion at the eastern side. Morphodynamical results showed that scenario 4 (two groins each 1000 m length at the west side of the western jetty combined with two groins each 500 m length at the east side of the existing eastern jetty of the harbour) has considered the best scenario. Feedbacks between sediment and plants in the submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds of the Susquehanna Flats help modulate sediment delivery into the upper Chesapeake Bay from its major tributary (Susquehanna River). Recent modeling work has shown that SAV can steer the river plume, directly controlling sediment transport and fate. However, transport mechanisms likely differ between flood and non‐flood conditions and depend on event timing. An opportunity to evaluate these insights in the field occurred with several flood events in summer 2018. Sediment and biomass samples were collected after the flood in the large, continuous main SAV bed of the Flats and in smaller patches to the west of the main bed to evaluate the effect of SAV bed size (width). Sediment characteristics (grain size, organic content) and deposition rates were compared to previous observations during non‐flood conditions in the main bed in 2014–2015 and in the smaller patches in 2019. Overall, sediment deposition rates could be predicted by an empirical model including sediment load, vegetation biomass, and SAV bed width, reflecting the role of vegetation in steering the Susquehanna River plume and modulating sediment input to the upper Chesapeake Bay. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns of sedimentation is essential for realistic estimates of sediment and nutrient (especially nitrogen and carbon) storage in freshwater SAV systems, which have not received as much attention as their saltwater counterparts. Excessive sedimentation in sand-laden rivers significantly hinders the normal operation and overall effectiveness of reservoirs. This is observed particularly in plain-type sand-laden reservoirs where weak hydraulic conditions in the reservoir area contribute to sediment deposition. Water–sediment regulation is essential in reducing sedimentation and prolonging the lifespan of such reservoirs. Taking the plain-type reservoir of the primary stream of the Yellow River—Haibowan Reservoir as an example, based on a two-dimensional shallow water equation, a two-dimensional mathematical model of water and sediment in the reservoir area is established, the corresponding boundary conditions are improved, and the reliability of the model is verified. Under the premise of ensuring the flood control safety of the reservoir dam, considering the impact on the power generation of the reservoir and the downstream river, and maintaining the long-term large effective storage capacity of the reservoir as the basic principle, the water–sediment regulation scheme is proposed. A two-dimensional kinetic model of sediment transport and representative water–sediment series are employed to simulate the erosion and sedimentation processes in the reservoir under different schemes. The optimisation and comparison of multiple schemes reveal that the sediment-flushing scheme, which lowers the water level to 1072 m above sea level when the inflow discharge is 1500–2760 m3/s and inflow sediment concentration is 5–10 kg/m3, can yield an effective reservoir capacity of 97 million m3 and an average annual hydropower generation of 389.5 million kWh after 15 years of operation. This scheme outperforms the existing sediment-flushing scheme and is recommended as an optimised approach for water–sediment regulation in reservoirs. The results of this study provide technical support for the application of water–sediment regulation in the Haibowan Reservoir and may be useful in the exploration and management of water–sediment regulation for plain-type reservoirs on sand-laden rivers. Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in alluvial channel evolution by modifying flow and sedimentation dynamics. To elucidate the roles of sediment supply, flow‐dependent transport capacity, and morphodynamic feedbacks on the evolution of emergent vegetation patches over a single hydrograph, we conducted two experiments with different reach‐scale sediment supplies: a high‐supply experiment (HSE) and low‐supply experiment (LSE). We measured flow velocities, bedload transport, and topographic changes around a full‐scale patch of live emergent willows in an outdoor laboratory flume. Erosion occurred in the patch‐adjacent channel areas irrespective of the sediment supply, whereas deposition within the patch interior was suppressed in the LSE and enhanced in the HSE. The magnitude of patch deposition in each experiment was controlled by the local sediment supply to the patch and local sediment mobility during each discharge in the hydrograph. The local sediment supply was affected by bed morphodynamics at the patch head, which modulated the reach‐scale sediment supply by redistributing the bedload in the channel. Sediment mobility within the patch was flow‐dependent and a function of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. For different discharges, the velocity in the patch changed proportionally with the freestream velocity; however, the turbulent kinetic energy was more sensitive, being elevated compared with the freestream during high flows and inhibited at low flows. Therefore, deposition and erosion within vegetation patches are not simply functions of the reach‐scale sediment supply or patch flow characteristics, as is often assumed, but additionally depend on the local sediment supply to the patch interior. Plain Language Summary: Riparian vegetation in rivers and deltas is considered a primary cause of sediment deposition and channel stabilization. However, in the laboratory, we identified the physical mechanisms influencing sediment deposition and erosion and their change over a natural flow regime to illustrate that the same full‐sized willow patch can either enhance or reduce sediment deposition within the patch interior relative to the same channel without vegetation. The amount of sediment deposited in the vegetation patch depended on the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the water, which changed as the flow decreased. Additionally, the presence of a single vegetation patch fundamentally changed the character of the channel from depositional to erosional near the patch, indicating that more erosion occurred in adjacent channels than deposition within the patch. Deposition and erosion of the bed were also influenced by the amount of sediment supplied to the channel from upstream. This reach‐scale sediment supply was modified by a sediment mound that formed at the upstream end of the patch during high sediment supply to the channel. The mound redistributed the sediment transport within the channel and vegetation patch, revealing another physical mechanism influencing the spatial and temporal variability of bedload transport in vegetated channels. Summary: The main approach to managing the volume of sediment transported by stony debris flows routing along channels is through retention basins and open check dams, usually built in the lower reach just upstream of inhabited areas where slopes are gentler. In some cases, these measures are not sufficient to retain all the volume of sediment transported by debris flows. Works for trapping the sediments should also be placed in the upper reach of debris‐flow channels. In this area, where the channel bed is characterized by very high slopes and vertical variability over time, constructing and maintaining transversal embankments for sediment retention is difficult. In addition, they could also be susceptible to failure, potentially increasing the magnitude of the phenomenon instead of mitigating it. On the other hand, other types of works, such as solid‐body check dams or net barriers, have a decreasing efficiency over time in reducing the volume of sediment transported by debris flows. An alternative solution could be a retention basin open on the downstream side, that is, without the ending transversal embankment or berm. Therefore, it can be designated as a deposition area because the retention effect of the downstream embankment is missing, and sediment deposition only occurs due to the flatness of the basin. For sizing purposes, here, we derive two relationships between the deposition area and the volume of the deposit. These two relationships are derived from a physically based geometrical approach and empirical approach, respectively. After analyzing the morphology of the depositional processes that occurred in an existing deposition area during debris‐flow events, we test the validity of the two relationships. Overall, these can be used independently or in combination for designing a deposition area. Reservoirs have become an important component in the worldwide river sediment flux. Reservoirs prevent downstream sediment transport and have become a major sediment sink. In this study, sediment deposition during the last 115 years in the Urft Reservoir in western Germany is reconstructed. The Urft Reservoir is the oldest reservoir in the Eifel Mountains and was almost completely drained in 2020. This enabled a detailed mapping of the lake bottom using an unmanned aerial system and the computation of a high‐resolution digital surface model. Topographic maps with a nominal resolution of 1:1000 from the time prior to the construction of the dam (around 1900) were used to construct a pre‐reservoir elevation model. A digital elevation model of difference (DoD) was calculated from these two datasets for the reservoir floor (0.72 km2). Based on the DoD, a net sediment accumulation of 1.16 × 106 m3 was calculated alongside a propagated volume error of 6.91 × 105 m3, resulting in a mean accumulation of 1.54 m. Conservative vertical error propagation results in an average level of detection (LoD) of 1.8 m. In contrast, the comparison of the DoD with 47 cores in the upper part of the reservoir showed a mean difference of −0.11 m, indicating a high, independently assessed accuracy of the DoD. Three depositional hotspots were identified in the reservoir. One is close to the Urft dam where very fine sediments are draped across the pre‐reservoir topography. Two areas are related to reservoir management. Sediment deposition in the Urft Reservoir has been comparably low in comparison to other regions globally, resulting in a 3.25% ± 1.93% loss of reservoir volume between 1905 and 2020. Recent climate change has caused an increase in warming-driven erosion and sediment transport processes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Yet a lack of measurements hinders our understanding of basin-scale sediment dynamics and associated spatiotemporal changes. Here, using satellite-based estimates of suspended sediment, we reconstruct the quantitative history and patterns of erosion and sediment transport in major headwater basins from 1986 to 2021. Out of 13 warming-affected headwater regions, 63% of the rivers have experienced significant increases in sediment flux. Despite such intensified erosion, we find that 30% of the total suspended sediment flux has been temporarily deposited within rivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity within and across basins. The recurrent fluctuations in erosion-deposition patterns within river channels not only result in the underestimation of erosion magnitude but also drive continuous transformations in valley morphology, thereby endangering local ecosystems, landscape stability, and infrastructure project safety. Pulau Baai Port, located strategically in the Indian Ocean and considered a vital maritime hub in Indonesia, grapples with persistent challenges related to abrasion and sedimentation, which negatively impact its maritime infrastructure. One of the affected components is the exposed gas pipeline installation along the port's coastline. The sedimentation rate along Pulau Baai's coastline is alarming, ranging from 600,000 to 800,000 m3/year, resulting in coastal abrasion at a rate of up to 20 m/year. This study focuses on three scenarios using MIKE 21, including a baseline without alternatives, shore protection alternatives, and jetty protection alternatives. A comprehensive dataset, incorporating bathymetric maps, wave patterns, current data, and sediment characteristics, supports the analysis of coastal dynamics, emphasizing the urgency for intervention. The research introduces the novelty of analyzing coastal abrasion through the exposure of underground pipelines, establishing a relationship between impacting factors such as wave height, tides, sedimentation, and coastal abrasion. Mitigation alternatives, particularly alternative model-2 with jetty protection, are recommended based on a thorough evaluation of the model performance and actual measurements. The results show that Pulau Baai's sediment, primarily sandy, experiences substantial abrasion and coastline changes, notably in alternatives-2 and -3. The study anticipates potential sedimentation in certain sections of the subsea exposed pipelines in the absence of shore protection. The outcomes of this research provide a foundational guide for informed decision making and strategies to ensure the sustainable functionality of maritime infrastructure in Pulau Baai and similar coastal regions. Existing knowledge about groyne-induced effects is primarily based on riverine or coastal environments where salinity gradients are absent or limited. However, in estuaries, salinity gradients drive physical processes such as longitudinal and lateral residual flows. The effect of groynes is much more complex because they can modulate channel hydrodynamics and directly affect lateral salinity gradients. In this study, an idealized model is applied to investigate the effects of groyne layouts in estuarine environments, including effects on (1) channel hydrodynamics, (2) lateral water exchange, (3) Coriolis effects, and (4) saltwater intrusion. Model results show that the aspect ratio (the width of groyne fields to the length of groynes) of groyne fields plays an important role. Groynes also induce asymmetry of lateral flows, for example, increasing near-bottom shoal-to-channel flows during low water slack. The aspect ratio has opposite effects on horizontal and vertical components of water exchange. A large aspect ratio strengthens horizontal exchange and weakens density-driven currents. For a large-scale groyne field (several kilometers), Coriolis effects introduce a substantial difference in exchange mechanisms along the north and south banks. A medium range of aspect ratio (2.0–3.0) leads to the strongest saltwater intrusion during both neap and spring tides. Dikes and groynes are common engineering structures in waterways designed to increase along-channel flow velocities and prevent sediment deposition, thereby maintaining navigability. However, especially in estuarine environments, cross-channel flow velocities resulting from these structures may generate sediment transport toward the channel, in contrast to their original intention. Another important impact of these structures is on saltwater intrusion, which is crucial to freshwater resource management. Therefore, this research investigates the groyne-induced effects on cross-channel flows and the saltwater intrusion problem by comparing different layouts of groynes and their consequences. Two important findings may benefit practical applications. First, the interaction between saltwater and freshwater in estuaries enhances cross-channel flows during certain periods, thereby influencing sediment transport. Second, the maximal saltwater intrusion occurs for intermediate width-to-length ratios of the groynes, with lower saltwater intrusion for either very small or very wide groyne fields. Constant changes occur in coastal areas over different timescales, requiring observation and modeling. Specifically, modeling morphological changes resulting from short-term events, such as storms, is of great importance in coastal management. Parameter calibration is necessary to achieve more accurate simulations of process-based models that focus on specific locations and event characteristics. In this study, the XBeach depth-averaged model was adopted to simulate subaerial data pre- and post-storms, and overwash phenomena were observed using the data acquired through unmanned aerial vehicles. The parameters used for the model calibration included those proposed in previous studies. However, an emphasis was placed on calibrating the parameters related to sediment transport that were directly associated with overwash and deposition. Specifically, the parameters corresponding to the waveform parameters, wave skewness, and wave asymmetry were either integrated or separated to enable an adequate representation of the deposition resulting from overwash events. The performance and sensitivity of the model to changes in volume were assessed. Overall, the waveform parameters exhibit significant sensitivity to volume changes, forming the basis for calibrating the deposition effects caused by overwashing. Arid regions are often characterized by exceptionally high rates of fluvial sediment transport, but the processes responsible for this apparent connection between climate and sediment transport remain unclear. We examined decades of continuous flow records and suspended sediment concentrations from 71 rivers across the United States by comparing the suspended sediment rating curve behavior, quantified using power law coefficients and exponents, to an aridity index. Results indicate that higher aridity correlates with both greater overall suspended sediment concentration and lower sensitivity of concentration to changes in discharge, demonstrating that rivers in arid locations on average have greater suspended sediment transport efficiency across most discharges, and achieve high transport rates at a relatively lower discharge than rivers in temperate climates. Furthermore, based on additional analyses of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, specific suspended sediment yield, and a hydrograph flashiness index, we attribute the relationships between sediment transport and climate primarily to differences in vegetation density, precipitation, and runoff, variables that all influence both sediment supply and riverbed grain sorting. Finally, we note that the observed contrasts in sediment transport behavior likely represent climate‐driven differences in the magnitude and frequency of sediment supply rather than annual suspended sediment load, which does not depend significantly on climate. This study highlights a critical connection between multiple interrelated climatic factors and sediment transport, an important finding for future hazard mitigation in a changing climate with rapidly shifting vegetation patterns and hydrology. Understanding the development and spatial distribution of alluvial patches in mixed bedrock‐alluvial rivers is necessary to predict the mechanisms of the interactions between sediment transport, alluvial cover, and bedrock erosion. This study aims to analyze bedrock alluviation patterns using a 2D morphodynamic model, and to use the model results to better understand the mechanisms responsible for alluvial patterns observed experimentally. A series of simulations are conducted to explore how alluvial patterns in mixed bedrock‐alluvial channels form and evolve for different channel slopes and antecedent sediment layer thicknesses. In initially bare bedrock low‐slope channels, sediment cover increases with increasing sediment supply because areas of Froude‐subcritical flow enable sediment deposition, while in steep‐slope channels the flow remains fully supercritical and the model predicts so‐called runaway alluviation. For channels initially covered with sediment, the model predicts a slope‐dependent sediment supply threshold above which sediment cover increases with increasing sediment supply, and below which the bedrock becomes fully exposed. For a given sediment supply, the fraction of bedrock exposure and average alluvial thickness converge toward the equilibrium value regardless of the initial cover thickness as long as it exceeds a minimum threshold. Steep channels are able to maintain a continuous strip of sediment under sub‐capacity sediment supply conditions by achieving a balance between increased form drag as bedforms develop and reduced surface roughness as the portion of alluvial cover decreases. In lower‐slope channels, alluvial patches are distributed sporadically in regions of the subcritical flow. Our numerical model results produce phenomena that have been observed in physical experiments, and they show that the channel slope and initial sediment thickness play an important role in determining whether and how much sediment can be deposited. Our results also show that flow transitions provide critical locations where sediment deposits can start to form. Confluences are dynamic morphological nodes in all river networks. In mountain regions, they are influenced by hydraulic and sedimentary processes occurring in steep channels during extreme events in small watersheds. Sediment transport in the tributary channel and aggradation in the confluence can be massive, potentially causing overbank flooding and sedimentation into adjacent settlement areas. Previous works dealing with confluences have been mainly focused on lowland regions, or if focused on mountain areas, the sediment concentrations and channel gradients were largely under-representative of mountain river conditions. The presented work contributes to filling this research gap with 45 experiments using a large-scale physical model. Geometric model parameters, applied grain size distribution, and the considered discharges represent the conditions at 135 confluences in South Tyrol (Italy) and Tyrol (Austria). The experimental program allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the effects of (i) the confluence angle, (ii) the tributary gradient, (iii) the channel discharges, and (iv) the tributary sediment concentration. Results indicate, in contrast to most research dealing with confluences, that in the presence of intense tributary sediment supply and a small tributary to main channel discharge ratio (0.1), the confluence angle does not have a decisive effect on confluence morphology. Adjustments to the tributary channel gradient yielded the same results. A reoccurring range of depositional geomorphic units was observed where a deposition cone transitioned to a bank-attached bar. The confluence morphology and tributary channel gradient rapidly adjusted, tending towards an equilibrium state to accommodate both water discharges and the sediment load from the tributary. Statistical analyses demonstrated that confluence morphology was controlled by the combined channel discharge and the depositional or erosional extents by the sediment concentration. Applying the conclusions drawn from lowland confluence dynamics could misrepresent depositional and erosional patterns and the related flood hazard at mountain river confluences. Intense rainfall events in mountain regions result in pronounced geomorphic activity including landslides, debris flows, sediment transport, and large woody debris. This study investigated the factors that affect wood deposition patterns during debris flows and the influence of wood on sediment deposition. We conducted flume experiments to simulate debris flow fans with driftwood and divided the experiments into plain and confluence sets. The plain set considered the condition where the debris flow tributary met a mild terrain, whereas the confluence set considered where the tributary met a mainstream. The results revealed that wood with roots was liable to form a log jam on the tributary, and small logs could travel long distances. In the confluence set, the mainstream flow caused asymmetric expansion of the debris flow fan and drove the small wood logs drifting downstream. In addition, wood logs may affect the sediment morphology, particularly in the plain set, which has no mainstream effect. In the plain set, driftwood constricted the development of fans in both volume and area. The wood also deflected the path and deposition of debris flows, causing an uneven fan surface. Our experiment results were consistent with the Japanese historical events, including the asymmetrical fans expansion in the confluence environment and the correlation between the travel distance and the size of the driftwood. This study provides valuable insights into the deposition patterns of debris flows with driftwood in mountain regions, filling the gap left by previous researches in driftwood-influenced debris flow deposition on fans. River mouths are dynamic systems that can respond rapidly to both fluxes in fluvial water and sediment discharge and marine energy conditions, notably waves. On semi-arid wave-exposed coasts, the morphosedimentary behaviour of river mouths is particularly sensitive to variations in water discharge, which can be significantly influenced by climate variations, in addition to anthropogenic actions such as the construction of dams for water resource needs. In this climatic setting, an increasingly common consequence of decreasing river water discharge is the more or less prolonged closure of river mouths. Most studies have addressed river-mouth closure using analytical, parametric, numerical, or statistical models. The present study uses output from four numerical models to elucidate the hydrodynamic and sedimentary behaviour of the mouth of the Oum-Errabia River (catchment size: 35,000 km2), which debouches on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The historical evolution of the river mouth and the impact of human interventions, such as the construction of dams, are discussed. The study also briefly discusses the impact of the recent closure of the river outlet, in response to particularly low water discharge, on the marine ecosystem and water quality. The modelling results covering a one-year simulation in this situation of closure indicate a deposition of 427,400 m3 of sediment in front of the mouth of the Oum-Errabia. Ensuring permanent river-mouth opening and tidal flushing and renewal of this river's estuarine waters will necessitate costly regular dredging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Canyons in carbonate depositional settings, as important elements of the source-to-sink system, remain poorly studied compared to those in siliciclastic depositional environments. The latest high-resolution three-dimensional seismic data, well logs, and core data at the eastern edge of the Precaspian Basin are used to investigate the geomorphology, infillings, and depositional process of a unique carbonate-filled canyon in the Carboniferous KT-II formation parallel to the carbonate platform, which is distinct from other slope-perpendicular canyons. The canyon has a total length of more than 52.3 km with a nearly N-S orientation and an S-shaped geometry, and the whole canyon can be divided into three segments by two knickpoints. The slope-parallel orientation of the canyon is mainly controlled by the palaeogeomorphology and reverse faults. Due to the collision of the Kazakh and European plates in the early-middle Visean (early Carboniferous), the canyon was formed in a northern tilted, elongated, and restricted palaeotopographic feature between uplifts. The development of reverse faults related to tectonic movement controlled the variations in the width of the canyon and the positions of the knickpoints. Tectonics controlled the orientation and formation of the canyon, while sedimentary processes contributed to its infilling. The well-seismic tie analysis indicated two distinct periods of the canyon fillings, Ss1 and Ss2, which were separated by a second-order sequence boundary. The lower part contained sediments supplied by both sides of the canyon through channels or gullies, and the upper part was dominated by a carbonate platform that prograded from the eastern side of the canyon. The evolution of the canyon can be subdivided into three stages. The increasing stage was mainly characterized by significant upslope erosion through headward retrogressive mass failures in the slope-parallel confined negative relief to form the canyon during the lowstand system tract of Ss1. Subsequently, in the early filling stage, the carbonate factory was productive during the highstand, and massive excess carbonate sediments were transported into the adjacent canyon by channels or gullies on both sides and deposited. The canyon was basically filled, and the morphology became much gentler. During the subsequent late filling stage, the carbonate platform was flooded again during the highstand, and the production rates of the carbonate factory greatly increased. Built to improve the water supply for the population of the city of Daloa, the water reservoir of the Lobo River is no longer functioning properly due to sedimentation phenomena. This study aims to understand the hydro-sedimentary functioning of the reservoir for better management. Based on the river flows, bathymetric surveys, suspended solids concentrations, and settling velocity, two-dimensional modelling of the flows and sedimentation of the Lobo River reservoir was carried out using the MIKE 21FM/MT software. The simulation results indicate that the hydrodynamic model could reproduce water level fluctuations in the Lobo river reservoir. The results are very sensitive not only to the boundary conditions of the model but also to the initial conditions. A strong influence of the initial conditions on the long-term stability of the models was observed. In all cases, the deposition rate tends towards a final value that only depends on the river flow. The trapping efficiency of the reservoir is between 26.7 and 80.4%. The different simulation scenarios indicate that the deposition thicknesses are between 0.02 and 48 mm/year and that the deposition occurs when the flow is loaded during the rise and fall phase of the hydrograph. Lake‐based studies can provide seasonal‐ to millennial‐scale records of sediment yield to improve our understanding of catchment‐scale sediment transfer and complement shorter fluvial‐based sediment transport studies. In this study, sediment accumulation rates at 40 coring locations in Lake Peters, Brooks Range, Alaska, over ca. 42 years, calculated using fallout radionuclides and sediment density patterns, were spatially modelled based on distance from the primary inflow and lake water depth. We estimated mean interdecadal specific sediment yield (Mg km−2 year−1) using the spatially modelled sediment accumulation rates and compared that result to fluvial‐based sediment delivery for 2015–2016 open‐channel seasons, as well as to yields reported for other Arctic catchments. Using the lake‐based method, mean yield to Lake Peters between ca. 1973 and 2015 was 52 ± 12 Mg km−2 year−1, which is comparable with fluvial‐based modelling results of 33 (20–60) Mg km−2 year−1 in 2015 and 79 (50–140) Mg km−2 year−1 in 2016 (95% confidence intervals), respectively. Although 2016 was a year of above average sedimentation, the last extreme depositional event probably occurred between ca. 1970 and 1976 when a basal layer of fine sand was deposited in a broadly distributed, relatively thick and coarse bed, which we used for lake‐wide correlation. The dual lacustrine–fluvial method approach permits study of within‐lake and catchment‐scale processes. Within Lake Peters, sedimentation patterns show decreasing fluxes down‐lake, sediment bypassing near the primary inflow, the influence of secondary inflows and littoral redistribution, and a focusing effect in the deep proximal basin. At the watershed scale, sediment yield is largely driven by intense summer rainfall and strong seasonal hydroclimatic variability. Fluvial sediment transport and deposition shapes river, floodplain, and estuarine systems but also can create water quality problems, which in some cases motivates efforts to reduce hillslope erosion. However, watershed management efforts rarely consider the fate of eroded sediments and the time scale of transport to estuaries. This study presents a modeling approach to estimate regionally averaged floodplain deposition, erosion, and sediment flux for the mid‐Atlantic U.S. caused by changing forest cover, urban development, and milldam construction. Regional regression equations estimate discharge at 3‐month intervals, and (temporally invariant) channel width and slope. Sediment concentrations are determined from a rating curve (defined for modern conditions by gaging‐station data). Tuning the model to floodplain stratigraphic data suggests that‐sediment concentrations prior to European colonization (i.e., before ∼1750) were 5%–8% of those prevailing today, while legacy (1750–1950) sediment concentrations were 25%–35% of present values. The calibration process, however, is only partly successful for the period before 1750 due to the limited number of older dated samples available. Nonetheless, the model accurately reproduces the observed age distribution of floodplain deposits. Computed sediment‐budget components increase monotonically from before 1750 to the present, and the ratio of budget components remains similar from one time period to the next. The model also predicts that millennial timescales are needed for mid‐Atlantic floodplains to equilibrate following a change in sediment regime, a finding with important implications for river corridor and watershed restoration planning. Sediment transport is a very complex process in urban water systems, and sediment movement mechanisms are poorly understood. However, it is necessary to comprehend sediment transport to optimize stormwater and sewer tank designs for better performance in trapping particulate pollutants. This work focuses on the numerical simulation and experimental investigation of tank sediment transport. In the numerical simulation, a discrete phase model is applied to calculate particle trajectories, and the particle tracking calculation is coupled with the steady-state flow calculation. A user-defined function is developed in the Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to implement the settling condition and improve the particle motion predictions. In the experimental work, a back-scattered ultrasonic method is used to measure the velocity field, and the accumulation of particles at the bottom is reproduced by transforming the raw experimental data. The sediment deposition is also recorded photographically, and the trap efficiency is calculated. The CFD and experimental results are compared to estimate the accuracy of the modified settling boundary condition, showing an improvement in the trap efficiency and deposition zone predictions. High water level in the tank corresponds to higher sediment trap efficiency, and sediment deposition type is strongly affected by the water level. This study assessed the deposition of sediment and shoreline evolution at two newly constructed port facilities in the Bight of Benin, West Africa. Based on the Building with Nature approach, the concept of a sandbar breakwater was implemented at the study sites. The coastal system of the bight is characterized by a sand barrier-lagoon system and a uniform prevailing wave climate, making it a favorable location for this innovative port solution. The case studies were undertaken at the Port of Lomé, Togo, and the Lekki Deep Sea Port (Dangote Sea Port), Nigeria, using remotely sensed shoreline positions and the one-line coastline change model for different periods. After construction of the breakwater, we estimated that the updrift coastline at the two locations accreted in the range of 10–23 m/year and the rates of sediment deposition were estimated to be in the magnitude of 1.0–7.0 × 105 m3/year. The comparative study conducted also showed that these rates could further reach a magnitude of 106 m3/year at other sediment-accreting landforms within the bight. We found that these large magnitudes of longshore sediment transport generated from very oblique incident waves (10°–20°) and sediment input from rivers (in orders of 106 m3/year) have enabled the realization of expected morphodynamic changes on the updrift shoreline of the ports. From these results, downdrift morphological changes should not be underestimated due to potential imbalances induced in the sedimentary budget along the coastline. Excess sediment and nutrient losses from intensifying agriculture degrade water quality and boost plant growth. The relationship between circulation patterns, spatial water quality degradation, and water hyacinth infestation is not adequately studied. The objective of this study is, therefore, to investigate the effect of lake circulation patterns on sediment and nutrient distribution and its implication on the spread of water hyacinth in a tropical lake. This study was carried out in Lake Tana, the largest freshwater lake in Ethiopia, where sediment and nutrient concentrations are increasing, and water hyacinths have become a challenge since 2011. The lake circulation pattern was simulated by the Delft3D model based on a bathymetry survey, discharge, and meteorological forcings. To predict the transport path of sediments and dissolved nutrients, an inert tracer was released in the four main river inlets of the lake. Observed lake water level measurements were used to validate the model. Our results show that the lake circulation pattern could explain the transport path of sediment and nutrients and the location of the water hyacinths found in the northeast of the lake. Sediments and nutrients from the largest river, Gilgel Abay, in the southeast of Lake Tana, flow through the two outlets nearby with little sediment deposition due to the relatively short retention time. The phosphorus-rich sediments of the 24 h at 105 °C remaining three main rivers joining the lake at the north and east are transported to the northeast. Thus, the management and control of water hyacinths should focus on the northern and eastern catchment areas of Lake Tana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reservoirs overflow during flood season because of sedimentation cycles, which severely affects their effectiveness. Siltation is a major problem in dams constructed in waterways in arid and semi-arid areas. Therefore, the reservoirs in wadis lose their capacity due to sedimentation. This study determines an optimal design of the trapping basin on steep slope areas for Wadi Bishah in the Asir region of southwestern Saudi Arabia. The empirical design criteria of the sediment-trapping basin is used to mitigate the effects of sedimentation in the King Fahd Dam. The empirical design of the trapping basin constructed upstream of the dam located in the wadi is presented. Moreover, the annual suspended and bed sediment load (Qs and Qb) techniques for estimating the volume of sediments are used, and the relationship between the sediment trapping efficiency and size is determined. The sediment trapping in Wadi Bishah upstream sediment-trapping basins is selected to reduce the amount of sediment. One of the important results of this study tries to create a new concept to trap sediment in wadis, which are located in arid and semi-arid areas. The results obtained were evaluated using theoretical and empirical equations to determine the appropriate size of the basin. The results demonstrate that the optimal dimensions for the sediment confinement basin are Lb × Wb × hs = 3500 × 500 × 1.5 m. Also, for these dimensions, the basin efficiency was assumed to be in the range of 60–70%. The trap basin should be constructed at open check dams upstream (U/S) of the proposed basin to enhance its efficiency. Further investigation is required to understand the transport and deposition of sediments, particularly fine sediments in the basin. Additionally, the effects of sediment traps in Wadi Bishah should be assessed during the construction of these structures to aid water resource management and mitigate flood disasters.
