Abstract Deep-sea microorganism research has become a hot topic in life science, owing to its special value in high pressure and low temperature environment. If not kept the in-situ low temperature and high pressure, it will cause the microorganism to lose its activity and lead to a waste of resources. A freeze-sediments valve presents a promising solution to maintain the low temperature and high pressure in situ, improve the success rate of sampling and shorten the sampling time. A series of experiments were conducted to characterize the freeze-sediments valve, including the sampling time without leakage, adaptation to different sediments and the effect of the length, etc. Most important of all, temperature change of sediments is observed in all experiments. Experimental results indicated that the freeze-sediments valve was formed in 5 min without leakage and the freeze-sediments valve could be applied to different sediments without limitations on sediments type and mineral content. Considering the pressure retaining capacity and formation time of freeze-sediments valve, it was found that the freeze-sediments valve with a length of 60–80 mm has good pressure retaining capacity whose value was 41.3–48.4 Mpa and short formation time which was 5 min. Precooling the sampler could be used to shorten the sampling time in the actual environment application. This sampling technique can play a vital role in maintaining in-situ low temperature at −2 to −4 ° Celsius in all the experiments. According to the tests, the sampling technique based on the freeze-sediments valve had the potential to solve the problem of keeping in-situ temperature, low sampling success rate and long sampling time in the future. Organogenic sediments (sapropels) in lakes are characterized by a reduced type of diagenesis, during which organic compounds are decomposed, the chemical composition of the pore waters is modified, and authigenic minerals (first of all, pyrite) are formed. Pyrolysis data indicate that organic matter undergoes radical transformatons already in the uppermost sapropel layers, and the composition of this organic matter is principally different from the composition of the organic matter of the its producers. The sapropels contain kerogen, whose macromolecular structure starts to develop during the very early stages of diagenesis, in the horizon of unconsolidated sediment (0-5 cm). The main role in the diagenetic transformations of organic matter in sediments is played by various physiological groups of microorganisms, first of all, heterotrophic, which amonifying, and sulfate-reducing bacteria. SO42− and Fe2+ concentrations in the pore waters of the sediments are determined to decrease (because of bacterial sulfate reduction), while concentrations of reduced Fe and S species (pyrite) in the solid phase of the sediment, conversely, increase. Comparative analysis shows that, unlike sapropels in lakes in the Baikal area, sapropels in southern West Siberia are affected by more active sulfate reduction, which can depend on both the composition of the organic matter and the SO42− concentration in the pore waters. This study investigates two bedrock-controlled palaeo-coastal embayments on the Barbate Platform off Cape Trafalgar near the Strait of Gibraltar (Gulf of Cadiz shelf, SW Iberian Peninsula), aiming to reveal their infilling dynamics and the influence of rocky outcrops on shallow-water hydrodynamics and sediment transport. The approach relies on detailed multibeam bathymetric data, high-resolution seismic profiles and tidal current simulations. Elongated rocky outcrops formed a palaeo-coast when sea level was approximately 35 to 20 m below that of the present day, and bound a relatively flat area. However, the seismic profiles enabled to distinguish two main troughs (A and B) that were infilled following a distinctive evolution during the last transgression. Five seismic units were identified (I to V, from base to top). Deposit A is composed of seismic units II to V and is interpreted as a marine embayment infill, here termed the Barbate palaeo-embayment (BPE). Deposit B is composed of seismic units I to IV and is interpreted as a palaeo-valley infill, here termed the Barbate palaeo-valley (BPV). The complex internal stratigraphic architecture depicts an overall evolution from tidal/fluvial deposits to shallow-water marine deposits. Most significant is the occurrence of coupled tidal flats/estuarine sand bars constituting the infilling of the BPE; this suggests the persistence of a high-energy current in a shallow, confined embayment, which was amplified by the rocky outcrop constrictions and possibly facilitated by the episodic movement of a normal fault. In contrast to this active setting, the nearby straight and narrow BPV was subjected to lower-energy infilling dynamics during its initial flooding phases. There, tidal activity was possibly reduced by the straight morphology of the valley and the occurrence of a topographic constriction (i.e. the Barbate Passage) at the mouth of the valley. Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) - 3 data for Digital Elevation Model through morphometric analyses of the Sanaga, Nyong and Kelle watersheds and landform were correlated with field survey in a Geographical Information System (GIS) model in the Edea-Eseka Region in SW Cameroon; erected on Paleo-to Neoproterozoic crystallophyllian rock types, Cretaceous to Recent sedimentary formations later affected by reactivated and neotectonic faults. This study that aimed to evaluate the lithology, tectonic and climate interactions on operating processes and landform characteristics based on the morphometric parameters of watersheds. Parameters vary from one watershed to another establishing one to three controls. The density drainage (0.05–0.29), the constant of channel maintenance (3.5–19.47) and the drainage pattern; outlines the lithological, the tectonic and the climate controls of the morphology. The Bifurcation ratio (2–5.25), the mean bifurcation ratio (3.67–4.09), the relative relief ratio (0.21–0.27), the watershed slope (5.75–9.35) and the watershed deviation (105–507); highlights the lithostructural controls of the morphology; whilst the wandering ratio (1.54–2.12) individualises both, the structural and climate controls. The stream number (370–2473) and the stream length ratio (0.57–1.91), the elongation ratio (0.47–0.55), the circularity ratio (0.25–0.29), fitness ratio (0.56–0.63), dissection index (0.91–0.99), the concavity index (−0.1-0.56), the hypsometric integral (0.45–0.49) and the stepped longitudinal length profiles, establishes the dominant tectonic controls of the morphology; while the rho coefficient (0.34–0.43) and drainage texture (1.91–4.75) displays the lithological control of the morphology and; the drainage intensity (1.76–7.62) and the length overland flow (1.75–9.74) typified the climate control of the morphology. The Edea-Eseka Region uplift rejuvenates old watershed each time they evolve to equilibrium because of lithological variations, neotectonics, differential erosion and climate variations; overriding its morphology. This geodynamic and climatic control of morphometric processes in the SW Cameroon can be extended to the whole of Central Africa and in Equatorial Regions that display similar evolutions. The Late Cenozoic East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) enhancement has been attributed to several factors, such as uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, retreat of the Paratethys Sea, and global cooling related to polar ice volume increment. However, the fundamental forcing factors remain enigmatic due to the absence of long and continuous climate records and sensitive indicators. Here we reanalyzed the published grain-size record of Sikouzi fine sediments in the western Chinese Loess Plateau through end-member (EM) modeling. The results indicate that EM 2 with grain-size peaks between 10–100 μm decreased in content from 20.1 to 17 Ma and stepwise increased from 17 to 0.07 Ma during the following six stages (17–15 Ma, 15–12 Ma, 12–8 Ma, 8–6 Ma, 6–4 Ma and 4–0 Ma). Such varying trends can be successively correlated in seven stages with the integrated benthic δ18O record, implying that global warming weakened the EAWM from 20.1 to 17 Ma and global cooling has stepwise strengthened the EAWM since 17 Ma. Therefore, we conclude that global temperature change played a major role on the evolution of EAWM during the Neogene period. By contrast, Late Cenozoic palaeogeographic reorganization caused by uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and retreat of the Paratethys Sea contributed less to the evolutionary evolution of EAWM. Spectral analysis of the EM 2 data first provided direct evidence of orbitally influenced deposition in the study area and thus the EAWM variations during the Neogene period. The 100-kyr period became weak since ~10 Ma, possibly due to the decrease in sensitivity of a more stable, continental-scale ice sheet in Antarctica to local insolation forcing, deserving further investigation. Fast-flowing outlet glaciers currently drain the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS), delivering ice, meltwater and debris to the fjords around Greenland. Although such glaciers strongly affect the ice sheet's mass balance, their glacimarine processes and associated products are still poorly understood. This study provides a detailed analysis of lithological and geophysical data from Disko Bay and the Vaigat Strait in central West Greenland. Disko Bay is strongly influenced by Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland's fastest-flowing glacier, which currently drains ∼7% of the ice sheet. Streamlined glacial landforms record the former flow of an expanded Jakobshavn Isbræ and adjacent GIS outlets through Disko Bay and the Vaigat Strait towards the continental shelf. Thirteen vibrocores contain a complex set of lithofacies including diamict, stratified mud, interbedded mud and sand, and bioturbated mud deposited by (1) suspension settling from meltwater plumes and the water column, (2) sediment gravity flows, and (3) iceberg rafting and ploughing. The importance of meltwater-related processes to glacimarine sedimentation in West Greenland fjords and bays is emphasised by the abundance of mud preserved in the cores. Radiocarbon dates constrain the position of the ice margin during deglaciation, and suggest that Jakobshavn Isbræ had retreated into central Disko Bay before 10.6 cal ka BP and to beyond Isfjeldsbanken by 7.6–7.1 cal ka BP. Sediment accumulation rates were up to 1.7 cm a −1 for ice-proximal glacimarine mud, and ∼0.007–0.05 cm a −1 for overlying distal sediments. In addition to elucidating the deglacial retreat history of Jakobshavn Isbræ, our findings show that the glacimarine sedimentary processes in West Greenland are similar to those in East Greenland, and that variability in such processes is more a function of time and glacier proximity than of geographic location and associated climatic regime. At the aim to clarify the relationship between the sandbar formation and lithogeneous sediment discharges, the sedimentological aspects of the Mesjid River Estuary are revealed by various analysis. The samples of bottom surface sediments and the suspended sediment were collected at 50 stations in the estuary using grab and van dorm samplers. Oceanographic observation were also carried out at the stations. The Mesjid River Estuary receives lithogeneous sediments mainly from the Mesjid River's drainage areas which play important role on the formation of sandbar which is shown by a belt-like area (0.5-1.0 m depth) in the area off the river mouth. The sandbar might become a sandbank in 20 to 40 years later. High suspended sediment up to 354.61 mg/l indicates the river mouth receives lithogeneous sediments. Total of 926 ton/day of the sediments supplied by the river are deposited 0.024 m/year into the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The decrease of coastal-water quality in the Surabaya coastal region can be recognized from the conceentration of Total Suspended Sediment (TSS). As a result we need a system for monitoring sediment concentration in the coastal region of Surabaya which regularly measures TSS. The principle to model and monitor TSSconcentration using remote sensing methods is by the integration of Landsat-8OLI satellites image processing using some of TSS-models then those are analyzed for looking its suitability with TSS value direcly measured in the field (in-situ measurement). The TSS value modeled from all algorithms validated usingcorrelation analysis and linear regression. The result shows that TSS model with the highest correlation value is TSS algorithm by Budiman (2004) with r value 0.991. Hence this algorithm can be used to investigate TSS-distribution which represent the coastal water quality of Surabaya with TSS value between 75 mg/L to 125 mg/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SAPO-34 catalyst with plate-like morphology was designed and synthesized for the first time, by the dry gel conversion method using cheap triethylamine as a structure-directing agent assisted with seed suspension containing nanosheet-like SAPO-34 seed. The latter played an important role in formation of SAPO-34 (CHA-type) with plate-like morphology. In addition, the yield of the product in the synthesis system containing seed suspension reached 97%, 15% higher than that obtained in the corresponding synthesis system without the seed suspension. Meanwhile, the plate-like SAPO-34 catalysts synthesized by this method exhibited higher selectivity to light olefins and longer lifetime in methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction than the traditional cubic SAPO-34 catalyst. In the Argentine Pampas region, there is little information about sediment concentration in agricultural catchments. The aims of this work are: (1) to analyse fluctuations in sediment concentration and discharge, as a first attempt to characterize hysteresis patterns; and (2) to study sediment concentration controlling factors and to assess the importance of these factors using principal component analysis and a multiple regression model. Twenty-five events registered during 4 years in a 560 ha gauged basin of Argentina were studied. Analysis of data suggested a positive clockwise pattern. The multiple regression model was performed with three factors obtained by principal component analysis: runoff, precipitation and antecedent conditions. The model explained 83% of the variability of sediment concentration. The runoff factor contributed to modelled sediment concentration with the highest magnitude, followed by precipitation and antecedent condition factors. The style of inversion of inherited extensional basins in the Western Alps is investigated through thermo-mechanical modelling. Two-dimensional models consist of a half-graben embedded in a relatively strong crust (basement) and filled with weak syn-rift sediments (cover). We investigate the relative influence of the internal friction (µ) of the basin-bounding normal fault, tectonic burial (h) under an overlying nappe and the geothermal gradient. We use a viscoplastic model with symmetrical shortening. The inherited normal fault is implemented as a curved thin body with a variable friction coefficient (µ) ranging from 0.1 to 0.6. The style of basin inversion is controlled at shallow depth by the internal friction coefficient, whose influence decreases with the increase of both burial depth and geothermal gradient. With increasing burial and/or geothermal gradient, fault reactivation is inhibited and distributed deformation in the basement induces the vertical extrusion of the cover. The basin inversion is accompanied by distributed deformation in the cover and by the shearing of the basin and basement interface. The results are consistent with the style of inversion of inherited half-grabens in the external Western Alps, where no significant fault reactivation occurred owing to tectonic burial underneath the Alpine internal units during the early Alpine collision. Hydraulic scour is one of the major causes of bridge and embankment failure during typhoon-induced or monsoon-induced floods in steep intermittent rivers in Taiwan. In this study, field data for sediment load and riverbed scour, measured in gravel-bed and sand-bed reaches between 2003 and 2013 are analyzed to determine their differences under nonequilibrium sediment-transport conditions. The riverbed scouring potential was extremely high during the fast-rising stage of a large flood in the bimodal gravel-bed reach. By contrast, the unimodal sand-bed reach with a higher suspended load typically demonstrated a lower scouring rate, although it was still higher than that of a perennial river. Existing bridge-scour formulas suitable for intermittent rivers were examined by separating short-term general scour and localized scour. A maximum general scour-depth formula is developed in this study for use as a potential tool for emergency evacuations and bridge closure purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quasi-circular collapsed landforms occurring in the Chryse region of Mars share similar morphological characteristics, such as depth of collapse and polygonally fractured floors. Here, we present a statistical analysis of diameter, maximum and minimum depth, and amount of collapse of these features. Based on their morphometric characteristics, we find that these landforms have a common origin. In particular, the investigated landforms show diameter-depth correlations similar to those that impact craters of equivalent diameters exhibit. We also find that the observed amount of collapse of the collected features is strongly correlated to their diameter. Furthermore, the linear relation between minimum filling and pristine depth of craters, the constant ratio between collapse and the amount of filling and the fractured and chaotic aspect of the filling agree with melting and subsequent collapse of an ice layer below a sediment layer. This interpretation is consistent with a buried sub-ice lake scenario, which is a non-climatic mechanism for producing and storing abundant liquid water under martian conditions. The development of sandification process was studied, by monitoring the changes of sediment characteristics, at marsh-sandy land intersections in China's Songnen region. A series of sediment collection plates were deployed in the region; after one year, sediments in these plates were analyzed for changes of mass and chemical characteristics. The sediment flux and the sand content of the sediments decreased with the increasing longitudinal distance between the sampling site and the centre line of a sand dune. The mean sediment flux was 29±14 kg m−2 yr−1 and 0.6±0.3 kg m−2 yr−1 in the sandy land and marsh, respectively. Strong, positive correlations were found between the concentrations of organic matter, total nitrogen, P, Fe, Ti, V and Zr, all of which were also negatively correlated with the sand content. The concentrations of organic matter, total nitrogen, P, Fe, Ti, V and Zr in the marsh sediment samples were all significantly greater than the corresponding concentrations of the sandy land (p<0.001). Sand content and Ti, V and Zr concentrations all proved to be valid indicators of sandification intensity, and they showed that the marsh could be divided into three distinct zones. Sand expansion extended about 88 m into the marsh. The mean sand content in the sediments of the sandy land was 91% and then 64% in the marsh, which in turn was higher than that of marshes outside the influence of sandification, suggesting that the marsh in the marsh-sandy land transitional area has already undergone extensive sandification in the past. Rill erosion is an important process that occurs on hill slopes, including sloped farmland. Laboratory simulations have been vital to understanding rill erosion. Previous experiments obtained sediment yields using rills of various lengths to get the sedimentation process, which disrupted the continuity of the rill erosion process and was time-consuming. In this study, an improved experimental method was used to measure the rill erosion processes by concentrated channel flow. By using this method, a laboratory platform, 12 m long and 3 m wide, was used to construct rills of 0.1 m wide and 12 m long for experiments under five slope gradients (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 degrees) and three flow rates (2, 4, and 8 L min−1). Sediment laden water was simultaneously sampled along the rill at locations 0.5 m, 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, 4 m, 5 m, 6 m, 7 m, 8 m, 10 m, and 12 m from the water inlet to determine the sediment concentration distribution. The rill erosion process measured by the method used in this study and that by previous experimental methods are approximately the same. The experimental data indicated that sediment concentrations increase with slope gradient and flow rate, which highlights the hydraulic impact on rill erosion. Sediment concentration increased rapidly at the initial section of the rill, and the rate of increase in sediment concentration reduced with the rill length. Overall, both experimental methods are feasible and applicable. However, the method proposed in this study is more efficient and easier to operate. The analysis of foraminiferal assemblages in sediments that were deposited during the last 30 kyr revealed similar patterns in their distribution in the central and marginal parts of the Deryugin Basin. The similar composition of foraminifers through the entire basin implies similarity in natural environments within its limits. The absence of benthic foraminifers or extreme impoverishment of the assemblages during the maximum of the last glaciation could result from a combination of several factors: drastic decrease in bioproductivity due to general cooling, development of bottom anoxia, and presumably unfavorable influence of seeps on geochemical parameters of bottom waters. The weak activity of barite-methane seeps in the central part of the basin during the Holocene is evident from some variations in the structure of benthic foraminiferal assemblages against the background of their similar taxonomic compositions. The geologic record from high-latitude continental margins shows that soft-bedded ice streams are capable of eroding, transporting, and depositing large volumes of sediment. Interpretation of these records relies on correct understanding of how sediments were transferred. We use a three-dimensional numerical ice-flow model, with physically based processes taking place in a Coulomb-plastic basal till layer, to test a new hypothesis related to sedimentary processes occurring beneath ice streams. Based on recent observations of a 15-m-thick debris-bearing basal ice layer (BIL) in Kamb Ice Stream, Antarctica, we propose that sediment entrainment by freeze-on, followed by englacial transport, and eventually meltout, represent efficient mechanisms whereby ice streams erode their bed and redistribute sediments. Our experimental setup produces results where ice stream flow is characterized by oscillations between fast and stagnant modes of flow. We show that there is a strong coupling between the amplitude of the ice stream oscillations and the amount of sediment eroded and transferred out of the modeled system due exclusively to the formation and advection of a BIL. We also show that increased incorporation of water from a basal water system amplifies the oscillations and thus the growth of the BIL. The patterns of ice stream flow, and associated sediment fluxes and transport seen in our model, are consistent with modern Antarctic ice streams as well as the seemingly erratic behavior of paleo--ice streams during the last deglaciation. Abstract: An analytical model was constructed to simulate the refraction of waves on coral reef platforms comprising an idealised bathymetry of uniform depth and vertical reef faces. Model simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of key parameters such as reef shape and depth as well as wave period on the propagation behaviour of incident waves. Results of the refraction analysis demonstrate that different reef shapes produce characteristic patterns of wave convergence on reef surfaces. The location and stability of focal zones and hence wave convergence is largely controlled by the shape of platforms. Platform configuration further controls the distribution of wave energy across platform surfaces and determines the influence of incident wave forcing on different reef sections. Results have significant implications for sedimentation processes and hence the formation and stability of islands on reef platforms. Wave propagation patterns define sediment transport vectors and subsequently control the transport and deposition of different sized material. Platforms which promote marked wave convergence behaviour, such as elliptical and circular reefs, are more likely to retain sediment on reef surfaces, whereas narrow linear structures have a higher potential for the off-reef evacuation of sediment over leeward reef margins and the subsequent infill of deeper lagoonal areas. Yangshan Deepwater Harbor, located in the Qiqu Archipelago adjacent to Hangzhou Bay, is the new deepwater harbor of the Port of Shanghai. Its construction, which began in 2002, entails three types of engineering projects: closing a series of inlets, land reclamation, and dredging. After the construction of harbors 1, 2, and 3, these engineering projects caused a series of morphological changes in the area. Because of the serious sedimentation in the harbor area, further construction of the planned harbors has been stopped for the time being. Research on the sedimentation and its causes is urgently needed in order to decide whether to continue construction of more harbors. In this paper we analyze the morphological changes in the harbor area using bathymetric data collected from 1998 to 2010. Since 2004 bathymetry in the area has been surveyed every year, making it possible to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of sedimentation-erosion in detail. The analyses provide a good insight into how the morphological changes are related to the various projects of the harbor construction and how the changes develop over time. It is shown that in the year immediately after an inlet was closed accretion occurred on both sides of the closure. The sedimentation rates decrease significantly in the following years. Accretion accelerated from 2007 to 2009 but decreased thereafter. The results of the analyses indicate that routine dredging will be necessary to maintain the requisite 15-m depth requirement for berths, but a regular dredging routine is feasible. For a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the observed morphological changes a numerical model based on Delft3D is used to simulate the hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes. Oxygen isotopic measurements were made on three firn cores (6.0, 11.0 and 15.5 m deep) from the two highest summits of the glacier located on the SW-NE and NW-SE central ridges. Sub-annual δ18O cycles were preserved and could be counted visually in the uppermost parts of the cores, but deeper layers were affected by post-depositional smoothing. A pronounced δ18O minimum was found near the bottom of the three cores. We consider candidates for this δ18O signal to be a valuable reference horizon since it is also seen elsewhere in Nordaustlandet. We attribute it to isotopically depleted snow precipitation, which NCEP/NCAR reanalysis shows was unusual for Vestfonna, and came from northerly air during the cold winter of 1994/95. Finding the 1994/95 time marker allows establishment of a precise depth/age scale for the three cores. The derived annual accumulation rates indirectly fill a geographical gap in mass balance measurements and thus provide information on spatial and temporal variability of precipitation over the glacier for the period spanned by the cores (1992-2009). Comparing records at the two locations also reveals that the snow net accumulation at the easternmost part of Vestfonna was only half of that in the western part over the last 17 years. Abstract: In 1990 Marton Pecsi published a paper entitled ‘Loess is not just the accumulation of dust’. This 1990 paper presented the case for considering aspects of loess formation other than the aeolian deposition of silty material. Pecsi argued that there is more to loess formation than simply the fact of aeolian deposition. While not disputing the validity of much of Pecsi’s arguments a case can be made for considering that aeolian deposition is at the very heart of loess formation, that the factor of aeolian deposition is so critical that other aspects are relatively unimportant. Pecsi appeared to suggest that aeolian deposition is just one of many factors relating to the formation of loess deposits; this is not so aeolian deposition and the consequent formation of metastable structures is absolutely central. But, it is probably useful to consider the ‘aeolian deposition is absolutely critical’ approach and the ‘aeolian deposition is one of the factors’ approach in some more detail, and in relation to each other. The article offers information on the accumulation of gas hydrates at the bottom of the sea during sequential deposits of sendiments with different transport properties. It states that geophysical studies have revealed more than 200 hydrate manifestations in the World Ocean, mainly in the offshore zones where favorable conditions for the generation of biogenic and thermogenic gas are realized. It mentions that accumulation of gas hydrates occurs during the deposition, burying, and compaction of sediments. It highlights that filtration in the sediment medium is the most powerful mechanism of gas supply into the stable zone of gas hydrates.

Abstract: Linear dunes are extensive in sand seas and dune fields around the world, but they take a range of forms due to the complex factors that control their development. “Raked” linear dunes, composed of primary ridges and subsidiary ridges that lie almost perpendicular to the primary ridges, were recently identified in the northern part of China''s Kumtagh Desert. The primary ridges are typical linear dunes, but the subsidiary ridges display vestiges of barchan dunes. The subsidiary ridges are sufficiently short that they do not greatly affect the general appearance of the linear dunes. However, the raked linear dunes in the Kumtagh Desert have several unique characteristics that distinguish them from typical linear dunes. These dunes develop in an environment that is deficient in available sediment, and under a wind regime typical of linear dunes: an environment with a high wind energy and a directional variability index (RDP/DP) around 0.5. The raked linear dunes appear to have evolved from barchans following a modified form of Tsoar''s (1984) model. Barchans formed under a northern wind regime were modified by an eastern wind regime oriented at an oblique angle to the barchans. The strengths of the two wind regimes are similar. Under these conditions, the barchans became reoriented, with the limbs farthest from the eastern winds extending to form subsidiary ridges and the limbs closest to the eastern winds forming the primary ridges, which appear to form mainly from dune collisions. Abstract: Of the many different types of riverbank failure, the planar failure mechanism is perhaps the most common, being associated with steep, relatively low banks composed of cohesive sediments. To reliably analyze the stability of riverbanks against planar failures many parameters (including the failure plane angle and the depth of the tension crack) have to be determined. In this paper we introduce a new analytical method to estimate the failure plane angle. This is achieved by employing a combination of field and laboratory data to first derive a set of empirical curves to estimate the tension crack depth. The estimated tension crack depth is then used in a bank stability analysis, from which the failure plane angle can be evaluated. Based on observations from field and laboratory tests, we found that the new model provides a mean relative error (MRE) of 4%, 23%, and 27% between calculated and observed values of failure plane angle, tension crack depth, and bank-top retreat, respectively. Based on a comparison of these errors with those derived from a range of existing equations, we show that this represents a considerable improvement relative to prior studies. During pressure flushing of deposited sediments over large dam intakes, a funnel-shaped crater is formed due to considerable shear flow around the opening. Experiments with variable flow depth and discharge were conducted to determine the geometry of the flushing cone for fine, medium and coarse non-cohesive sediments. These sediments increase with increasing discharge and decrease with increasing reservoir depth and sediment particle size. Using the test results, two equations are proposed to estimate scour cone length and volume. While the water depth over the sediments is the most significant parameter in the collapse of sediments above the intake and initial development of the cone, the sensitivity analysis indicated that the intake flow velocity is the most significant parameter in determining the final equilibrium size of the scour cone. The peculiarities of conodont fauna redeposition of the Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous sediments from different structural-facial zones of the Southern Urals (the Zilair megasynclinorium on the western slope of the Southern Urals (paleocontinental sector) and the Magnitogorsk-Bogdanovsk graben in the central part of the Magnitogorsk megasynclinorium on the eastern slope (paleooceanic sector)) have been studied. Bioclastic flow deposits offshore from the Soufrière Hills volcano on Montserrat in the Lesser Antilles were deposited by the largest volume sediment flows near this active volcano in the last 26 kyr. The volume of these deposits exceeds that of the largest historic volcanic dome collapse in the world, which occurred on Montserrat in 2003. These flows were most probably generated by a large submarine slope failure of the carbonate shelf comprising the south-west flank of Antigua or the east flank of Redonda; adjacent islands that are not volcanically active. The bioclastic flow deposits are relatively coarse-grained and either ungraded or poorly graded, and were deposited by non-cohesive debris flow and high density turbidity currents. The bioclastic deposit often comprises multiple sub-units that cannot be correlated between core sites; some located just 2 km apart. Multiple sub-units in the bioclastic deposit result from either flow reflection, stacking of multiple debris flow lobes, and/or multi-stage collapse of the initial landslide. This study provides unusually precise constraints on the age of this mass flow event that occurred at ca 14 ka. The coastline of Hai Hau District, located on the northeast coast of Vietnam with about 30 km of shoreline, is chronically eroding. Previous studies have tried to highlight the main causes of the erosion along this coastline, and several hypotheses exist. To examine the hypothesis that gradients in the longshore sediment transport rate and cross-shore fine sediment lost offshore are the main causes generating the serius erosion at Hai Hau Beach, a newly developed numerical model of shoreline change based on the one-line theory was applied and compared with data. Sea dike segments, reinforced by stones and mortar, were modeled using a seawall boundary condition, and the sediment continuity equation was modified to take into account the offshore transport of fine-grained sediment. The simulated shorelines agreed well with the measured shorelines, both for the calibration and validation periods. The calculated sediment budget shows that the net sediment transport is in the southward direction and that a large amount of finegrained sediment is lost into deep water. Abstract  The downstream ecological consequences of two controlled “free flow” flushing operations designed to remove sediments accumulated in an alpine reservoir are described. The main objectives of the study were (a) to verify to what extent the suspended solid concentration (SSC) in the receiving water course can be controlled by flushing operations, (b) to determine the biological consequences of flushing operations, and (c) to produce technical guidelines for the future planning and monitoring of these activities. We found that the flushing of large volumes of accumulated sediment had clear effects on the stream ecosystem due to the unpredictability of short duration SSC peaks (70–80 g L−1) and the high average SSC (4–5 g L−1) within flushing periods. The main impacts were decreased fish densities (up to 73%) and biomass (up to 66%). A greater mortality recorded for juveniles will likely result in long-term impairment of the age-structures of future fish populations. The zoobenthic assemblages, despite exhibiting a drastic reduction in abundance following the first floods, showed substantial recovery within 3 months of the beginning of flushing operations. Regular sediment removal by yearly flushing is recommended in order to avoid SSC peaks and to facilitate the control of scouring effects caused by the water used to wash out sediments. Abstract: The magnetic fabric of sandstones in thrust sheets of the Flysch Belt of the Western Carpathians is basically sedimentary in origin, in minority of specimens slightly affected by deformation which is generally very weak, corresponding to the earliest deformation stage and to Types I-II in terms of the magnetic fabric classification of the accretionary prisms by Parés et al. (1999) and Aubourg et al. (2004), respectively. This indicates an absence of the return flow during the subduction process. The deformation is weaker in the thrust sheets located at the margins of the Flysch Belt (the Ždánice and Silesian thrust sheets in the west and the Bílé Karpaty and Oravská Magura thrust sheets in the east) than in the Fore-Magura, Rača and Bystrica thrust sheets located in the centre of the Flysch Belt. In the Ždánice and Silesian thrust sheets, the weak deformation reflects their sedimentation on the northern (“European”) slope of the Flysch Belt Basin and relatively short transport during their thrusting over the Foredeep. In the Bílé Karpaty and Oravská Magura thrust sheets that are located near the subduction zone, the weak deformation is explained by assuming early offscraping and frontal accreting of these thrust sheets. In the Pieniny Klippen Belt, the deformation of the Palaeogene sandstones (“peri-Klippen” Palaeogene) is stronger than that in the marginal thrust sheets (Ždánice, Silesian, Bílé Karpaty and Oravská Magura thrust sheets) of the Flysch Belt, but weaker than that in the central thrust sheets (Fore-Magura, Rača and Bystrica thrust sheets) of the Flysch Belt. This is in an apparent contradiction with strong macroscopic deformation of Mesozoic rocks of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, but understandable realizing that the sediments of the “peri-Klippen Palaeogene” were deformed only during the neoalpine orogenies in Palaeogene and Neogene after the main deformation (Late Cretaceous) in the Pieniny Klippen Belt. Deltaic sediments of the Billund and Bastrup sands were deposited in a ramp setting in the storm-dominated North Sea during the early Miocene. A marked relief in the hinterland and the relatively high precipitation resulted in a high sediment supply to the sea and progradation of major delta-coastal plains south of the present-day Norway. The focus of this study is on the forced regressive wedge system tracts of the two delta complexes, which show remarkably well-developed marine erosional surfaces associated with sand-rich packages characterised by steeply dipping clinoforms (up to 10°). The well-developed clinoformal packages indicate that deposition occurred in water depths of 60–100 m even under a sea-level fall. The sand-rich delta lobes also demonstrate that it was a high-energy environment and that wave-generated re-suspension at the delta front effectively re-sorted the sediments and sand-rich systems became separated from mud-dominated portions of the delta complexes. The evolution of the above occurred in a basin that has been exposed by inversion tectonism. The sediment supply was consequently high. During deposition, eustatic sea-level changes strongly controlled the evolution of sequences. The results found in this study may be applicable for mapping reservoir sands in ramp settings and in rift basins especially when looking for reservoir rocks in the basinal setting or when carrying out detailed reservoir mapping in already existing hydrocarbon fields. Frequent storm surges in the Alaskan arctic result in washovers and high erosion of barrier islands. The village council of Kivalina has resolved to relocate its present location on a barrier island in northwest arctic Alaska to an adjacent onshore site. The relocation plan envisages excavation of the upper 4 meters of the 25-km2 onshore permafrost ground and the construction of a foundation pad. The objective of this research is to estimate the gravel resource potential in the continental shelf off Kivalina. In this context, seismic surveys and sediment sampling were conducted. The seismic surveys were of limited use as they failed to resolve the upper 1-2 m of the seafloor. The lithostratigraphy indicated dominance of the 2.4-3.4 mm size fraction in the region north of Kivalina. The geostatistical analysis indicated an omnidirectional variogram fit to the data with ordinary kriging (OK) producing the best kriging estimate of the gravel resource potential. At least 20 × 106 m3 of gravel above 90% cut-off is present in the upper 0.5 m of the seafloor. Heavy mineral deposits of placer origin are mostly found as beach or dune deposits. Suction cutter or bucket-wheel dredgers are used to exploit such deposits when water is present for the maintenance of artificial channels and dredge ponds. Production reconciliation of dredge mining is a complex process because slumping of material causes mixing of material to take place amongst resource blocks during mining operations. This paper reviews the applicability of sonar technology for the determination of material losses taking place in the dredge ponds, and also reviews the applicability of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in conjunction with sonar technology as a cost effective method to enhance dredge mine production reconciliation in the heavy minerals mining industry. This paper discusses the influence of sedimentary environment and geological setting on geotechnical and physical properties of resulting sedimentary deposits. For this study, two different geological settings were considered, one is a river-fed and the other is a glacier-fed sedimentary environment. For both sedimentary environments, various geotechnical properties were considered and compared. These include plasticity, activity, compressibility, undrained shear strength and sensitivity. Results indicate that physical and geotechnical properties of sediments deposited in these two settings are significantly different. These differences are then interpreted in terms of the various mechanisms involved in submarine slope failure initiation in river-fed versus glacier-fed sedimentary environments. Coral reef calcareous sediment, a special category of rock-soil material, has representative geological structure and environmental characteristics. It is widely distributed in shallow areas of the tropical ocean; therefore the exploration instruments and technologies for engineering geology studies of coral reef calcareous sediments are very different from those used in land or deep-sea. Obtaining undisturbed cores from the Holocene unconsolidated stratum of coral reefs has been a key problem in the field of marine geology and environment surveying. The authors have designed a novel floating drilling platform equipped with a drilling machine, and successfully achieved undisturbed cores from both reef flats (with water depth 0.5 to 2 m) and a enclosed lagoon (with water depth 2-12 m) of Yongshu Reef (9°32-9°42 N, 112°52-113°04 E), southern South China Sea. Based on the detailed observation on the cores and the analysis from engineering geology, Yongshu Reef was split into reef three engineering geological zones: leading edge, reef flat (including outer reef flat, middle reef flat and inner reef flat) and lagoon. Many coastlines of the world, particularly those at higher latitudes and those located in tropical cyclone belts, are regularly battered by strong storm waves. Drowning of low-lying areas by storm surges and storm floods has been thoroughly recorded; however, storm deposits at rocky shorelines or on cliffs have been underrepresented in the literature. This article presents observations of extraordinary wave deposits along the high-wave energy coastlines of western Ireland and the northern Scottish isles and discusses possible wave event types and time windows of the processes responsible. We used archaeological, geomorphological, and geochronological disciplines to compare our findings with earlier results published for these areas and to contribute to the debate on whether large clasts found well above sea level and/or a considerable distance inland were deposited by storms or by tsunamis. The concept of beach morphodynamics was used to classify the swash zone of carbonate sandy beaches in the central part of the state of Yucatán (Mexico). Several topobathymetric profiles were analyzed to determine the slope of the swash zone, shape parameter A of Dean's model, and shoreline advance and recession. Grain size and wave data were also analyzed to determine the dimensionless fall velocity (Ω). The slope of the swash zone was in general greater during the tropical storm season than during the northerly wind (Nortes) season. Mean profile values according to shape parameter A ranged from -0.186 to -0.074. The Ω values indicated intermediate beaches with a reflective tendency. Abstract: The Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers originate in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas (Garhwal) and result in high sediment yields causing flood hazards downstream of the Ganga River and high sediment flux to the Bay of Bengal. The rivers are perennial, since runoff in these rivers is controlled by both precipitation and glacial melt. In the present study, three locations in the upper reaches of the Ganga River were monitored for 1yr (daily observations of, more than >1000 samples) for suspended sediment concentrations. In addition, more than one hundred samples were collected from various locations of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers at different periods to observe spatial and temporal variations in river suspensions. Further, multi-annual data (up to ∼40yrs) of water flow and sediment concentrations were used for inferring the variations in water flow and sediment loads on longer time scales. In most previous studies of Himalayan Rivers, there has been a general lack of long term water flow and sediment load data. In the present study, we carried out high frequency sampling, considered long term discharge data and based on these information, discussed the temporal and spatial variations in water discharge and sediment loads in the rivers in the Himalayan region. The results show that, >75% of annual sediment loads are transported during the monsoon season (June through September). The annual physical weathering rates in the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River basins at Devprayag are estimated to be 863tonskm−2 yr−1 (∼3.25mmyr−1) and 907tonskm−2 yr−1 (∼3.42mmyr−1) respectively, which are far in excess of the global average of 156tonskm−2 yr−1 (0.58mmyr−1). Abstract  A novel method for analyzing the effects that stratigraphic layers and joints have on spring locations is presented, with specific relevance for the southern Sacramento Mountains, south central New Mexico, USA. Bedrock in this heavily vegetated mountain block is mostly covered by alluvium and soil, making direct field observations difficult, and necessitating alternative methods. Elevations of a mapped geologic contact are used to produce a three-dimensional stratigraphic surface. A histogram of spring stratigraphic positions, calculated from this surface, indicates zones of preferential groundwater flow. Field measurements are combined with GIS analyses to quantify joint control on spring locations within stream valleys, and these results are compared to traditional lineament analysis. Stream valleys are parallel to joints observed in the field, and joint-parallel segments selected from digital elevation model (DEM)-mapped streams are up to 900 m in length. The abundance of springs throughout the study area decreases logarithmically with distance from these joint-parallel stream segments. Springs are more than twice as abundant within 25 m of joint-parallel stream segments compared with manually mapped lineaments from air-photos. Higher correlation with spring locations and significant time reduction by using GIS to select joint-parallel streams for lineament interpretation indicate that the method provides a good alternative to manual lineament analysis. Abstract: To mitigate erosion on abandoned fields in semi-arid ecosystems, it is important to understand how vegetation and soil properties and patterns develop after land abandonment. Our objective was to investigate the development of spatial heterogeneity in vegetation and soil properties after land abandonment. We described the vegetation composition, collected soil samples and made detailed aerial photographs for two series of abandoned fields on marl and calcrete in Southeast Spain. The images were classified into bare and vegetated patches, and spatial metrics were calculated for each site. Our results showed that recovery of vegetation and change in soil properties after land abandonment are slow and take at least 40 years in such a semi-arid environment. Succession on calcrete appeared to be faster than on marl, probably because more water is available due to the higher rock fragment cover. Organic matter, aggregate stability and electrical conductivity were all significantly higher under vegetated patches. We found a clear linear relationship between vegetation cover and most spatial metrics, which offers the possibility of upscaling spotted vegetation patterns. The results of our integrated approach to study spatial heterogeneity in vegetation and soil properties can be used to improve predictions of runoff and erosion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Eulerian equations for the vertical flux and momentum of suspended particles in dilute sediment-laden open-channel flow in equilibrium have been derived using the two-fluid approach. Reynolds averaging has been applied in order to allow validation of individual terms with experimental data. Consideration of the various terms of the vertical momentum balance with experimental flume data indicates that the drag force has to be separated into a mean and a turbulent contribution with different timescales, respectively, the (gravitational) particle timescale and the integral turbulence timescale. A laboratory characterization of cohesive sediment has been carried out in which data obtained from standard sedimentation and rheological measurements were combined in a determination of the critical solid concentration for the detection of elasticity in a weakly cohesive suspension. The corresponding storage modulus and shear stress are very critical in any in situ rheometry of sediments, especially in the study of mud-water surface erosion in a flume. Sedimentation results showed that particle size distribution rather than surface treatment controlled the rheological behavior of the suspension while the critical solid concentration for the appearance of three-dimensional space-filling network, showing some measurable elasticity in the suspension, occurred in the region of 0.015. This parallel between the consolidation behavior and shear rheology development for the flocculating system has been established. This technique could be an adjunct to the laboratory characterization of cohesive sediments for the estimation of critical shear stress for surface erosion, especially in a typical flume experiment under water wave pressure. The original derivation of the Einstein bed-load formula involves several oversimplified assumptions concerning step length of a particle, exchange time, and probability of being lifted into motion. A modified version of the Einstein formula that relaxes these assumptions and incorporates a nonuniform sediment model is proposed and tested with both field and laboratory data. Abstract: A configuration of pebbles on the vertices of a graph is solvable if one can place a pebble on any given root vertex via a sequence of pebbling steps. A function is a pebbling threshold for a sequence of graphs if a randomly chosen configuration of asymptotically more pebbles is almost surely solvable, while one of asymptotically fewer pebbles is almost surely not. In this paper we tighten the gap between the upper and lower bounds for the pebbling threshold for the sequence of paths in the multiset model. We also find the pebbling threshold for the sequence of paths in the binomial model. Finally, we show that the spectrum of pebbling thresholds for graph sequences in the multiset model spans the entire range from to n, answering a question of Czygrinow, Eaton, Hurlbert and Kayll.
