Broadband signals interacting with deep ocean fine-grained sediment are crucial in shaping the acoustic field of the geometric shadow zone. These signals travel through both the seabed reflected path and the refracted path. In this article, a sequential inversion scheme is employed to estimate the geoacoustic parameters in abyssal clay sediments. This inversion is based on seabed reflection loss data at different frequencies, as well as travel time difference data between refractions and reflections obtained from the South China Sea Experiment in 2018. Depth-dependent profiles of geoacoustic parameters are formulated using Bernstein polynomials. The polynomial coefficients and their posterior probability density functions are efficiently estimated using the adaptive simplex simulated annealing method and an approximate variational inference technique known as Variational Bayesian Monte Carlo. This technique demonstrates superior efficiency and comparable accuracy to Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling. The inversion results indicate that the abyssal clay sediments in this area exhibit a positive sound speed gradient and relatively low attenuation, both with high probabilities. The potential application of conducting Scholte‐wave analysis using electroseismic pressure fields excited by an electric current source due to the electrokinetic effect in fluid‐saturated porous seabed sediments is investigated. First, we develop a numerical modelling algorithm by combining the Luco–Apsel–Chen generalized reflection and transmission method with the peak‐trough averaging method to simulate the electroseismic wave fields in stratified fluid/porous media. The modelling results show that the electroseismic pressure signals recorded on the seafloor are mainly composed of evanescent electroseismic waves, and Scholte waves are the dominant wave pattern. Their amplitudes are generally within the order of magnitudes capable of being detected by current seismic instruments. Then, the modified frequency–Bessel transform method is extended to extract the Scholte‐wave dispersion curves from electroseismic pressure fields. Results demonstrate that Scholte‐wave dispersion curves extracted from electroseismic records are superior to those extracted from conventional seismic wave fields excited by an airgun source under the same source–receiver geometry because they contain many overtones and are almost free from the interferences of dispersive guided waves. Furthermore, the Scholte‐wave dispersion inversion results obtained by employing the Levenberg–Marquardt method show that the shear‐wave velocity model inverted by Scholte‐wave dispersion curves extracted from the electroseismic pressure field is more accurate than those obtained by dispersion curves extracted from the seismic wave fields with the guided‐wave removal. Quantification and mapping of surficial seabed sediment organic carbon have wide-scale relevance for marine ecology, geology and environmental resource management, with carbon densities and accumulation rates being a major indicator of geological history, ecological function and ecosystem service provisioning, including the potential to contribute to nature-based climate change mitigation. While global analyses can appear to provide a definitive understanding of the spatial distribution of sediment carbon, regional maps may be constructed at finer resolutions and can utilise targeted data syntheses and refined spatial data products and therefore have the potential to improve these estimates. Here, we report a national systematic review of data on organic carbon content in seabed sediments across Canada and combine this with a synthesis and unification of the best available data on sediment composition, seafloor morphology, hydrology, chemistry and geographic settings within a machine learning mapping framework. Predictive quantitative maps of mud content, dry bulk density, organic carbon content and organic carbon density were produced along with cell-specific estimates of their uncertainty at 200 m resolution across 4 489 235 km 2 of the Canadian continental margin (92.6 % of the seafloor area above 2500 m) (10.5683/SP3/ICHVVA, Epstein et al., 2024). Fine-scale variation in carbon stocks was identified across the Canadian continental margin, particularly in the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean regions. Overall, we estimate the standing stock of organic carbon in the top 30 cm of surficial seabed sediments across the Canadian shelf and slope to be 10.9 Gt (7.0–16.0 Gt). Increased empirical sediment data collection and higher precision in spatial environmental data layers could significantly reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy in these products over time. This study focuses on the inversion of sub-bottom profile (SBP) data in the northern South China Sea using an empirical relationship derived from sediment acoustic data. The sub-bottom profile is primarily utilized for various marine applications, such as geological mapping and resource exploration. In this research, we present a study conducted in the northern slope canyon of the South China Sea. Firstly, we obtained the seabed reflection coefficient from sub-bottom profiles obtained by the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) detection system. Secondly, we utilized the acoustic empirical relationship in the northern South China Sea to establish relationship equations between the seabed reflection coefficient and the porosity, density, and average particle size of the sediment at a main frequency of 4 kHz (the AUV shallow profile main frequency). Then, using these equations, we were able to invert the physical parameters such as porosity, density, and average particle size of the seabed surface sediments. Finally, the inverted results are compared and analyzed by using the sediment samples test data. The overall deviation rate of the inverted physical parameters is within the range of ±10% when compared. The inverted results closely match the measured values, accurately reflecting the dynamic changes in the physical properties of seabed surface sediments. Notably, the average grain size is a direct indicator of the sediment particles size with smaller particles found in deeper water. The variation characteristics of sediment physical parameters align well with the variation of sediment types in the canyon, which is consistent with changes in the water depth, topography, and hydrodynamic conditions of the area. The classification of seabed sediments is an essential aspect of marine spatial planning and management. Multibeam echo sounders (MBESs) have been widely used for efficient and reliable sediment classification. However, feature optimization is a complex and difficult task that requires considerable effort and domain expertise. In addition, selecting the optimal number of features and avoiding redundancy can pose challenges and ultimately lead to suboptimal classification performance. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a new approach to classifying seabed sediments by combining the parametric uniform manifold approximation and projection (PUMAP) feature optimization method with a convolutional neural network (CNN). MBES data are used to generate the main textures and bathymetric features, which are then transmitted via the CNN network. PUMAP is used to construct a representative graph from the extracted features and optimize the graph in a low-dimensional space using the weight of an autoencoder. The proposed approach was tested with MBES data from an Irish Sea survey. The results show that the proposed approach outperforms conventional sediment classification methods, with total accuracy of 97.20%, an F1 score of 97.31%, and a kappa of 0.9638. Understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of different paleontological communities in the southern South China Sea (SCS) is fundamental to explore its paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes. In this study, foraminifera, pollen and diatoms from 100 surface sediment samples covering 40 000 km2 of sea floor in the southern SCS were comprehensively investigated in terms of their assemblage and distribution. The results showed the existence of abundant foraminifera and pollen in most of the samples, although diatom communities were relatively scarce. Foraminifera were dominated by G. sacculifer, G. menardii, G. ruber, while diatoms were characterized by T. simonsenii, T. nitzschioides and T. longissima, indicating a typical tropical marine environment. The pollen assemblages showed a better reflection of montane rainforest, tropical rainforest and mangrove. The spatial differences among foraminifera assemblages may indicate the effect of water depth and a warmer environment in the southeast part of the study area, while the spatial patterns of diatom and pollen assemblages imply the influence of coastal current. Our study also noted that the compositions of paleontological communities in the SCS can vary significantly in a short distance, and synthesized studies on multiple biological groups are needed to reconstruct the Quaternary climate and the oceanographic environment. Low frequency acoustic methods are a common tool for seabed stratigraphy mapping. Due to the efficiency in seabed mapping compared to geotechnical methods, estimating geotechnical sediment properties from acoustic surveying is attractive for many applications. In this study, co-located geotechnical and geoacoustic measurements of different seabed sediment types in shallow water environments (<5 m of water depth) are analyzed. Acoustic impedance estimated from sediment properties based on laboratory testing of physical samples is compared to acoustic impedance deduced from CHIRP sonar measurements using an inversion approach. Portable free fall penetrometer measurements provided in situ sediment strength. The results show that acoustic impedance values deduced from acoustic data through inversion fall within a range of ±25% of acoustic impedance estimated from porosity and bulk density. The acoustic measurements reflect variations in shallow sediment properties such as porosity and bulk density (~10 cm below seabed surface), even for very soft sediments (su < 3 kPa) and loose sands (~20% relative density). The compositions of metalliferous sediments associated with hydrothermal vents can provide key geochemical data for locating seafloor sulfides. In this study, we present the geochemistry of seabed sediments from the Xunmei hydrothermal field (HF) in the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR). The results indicate that the sediments are mainly composed of pelagic material (biogenic calcium components), basaltic debris, iron-manganese oxides, and hydrothermal components. The sediments are significantly enriched in Cu, Zn, Fe, and Co deriving from hydrothermal fluids, as well as Mn, V, Mo, U, and P, which are primarily scavenged from seawater. The northeastern Xunmei has the highest concentrations of Cu and Zn, while the northeastern, northern, and southern regions are characterized by great inputs of Fe. Manganese and Mo are mainly enriched in the western and southern parts and show a strong positive correlation, indicating that Mo is mainly scavenged by Mn oxides. Uranium, P, and Fe exhibit strong positive correlations, suggesting that they coprecipitate with Fe from hydrothermal plumes. Vanadium and Co are introduced into sediments in different ways: V is scavenged and coprecipitated by hydrothermal plumes, and Co is derived from sulfide debris. Based on the contents of Cu and Zn and Cu/Fe (0.159), Zn/Fe (0.158), and Fe/Mn (1440) ratios, it can be inferred that a high-temperature hydrothermal vent existed in northeastern Xunmei. In combination with the distribution patterns of the above elements, the hydrothermal vents in the southern part ceased erupting after a short period of activity. In addition, the high Mn anomaly and the high U/Fe ratios at the boundaries of the investigated area indicate the presence of a relatively oxidized environment in southwestern Xunmei. At extreme deep-sea pressure, the assessment of the electroacoustic conversion performance of transducers is a major problem, particularly in the acoustic exploration of seabed sediment in 11,000-m abysses. To address this problem, an online measurement method was proposed for the electroacoustic performance under extreme pressure. The method utilized the 11,000-m transceiver with the high-frequency and narrow-beam characteristics. In the full-depth pressure profile, the transceiver signal was measured online by an extreme pressure simulation device. At different extreme pressure sites, characteristics of the transceiver signal were analyzed using the transceiver signal at atmospheric pressure as the reference. The characteristics included amplitude response characteristics, frequency response characteristics and time-frequency characteristics. The 11,000-m transceiver has verified the stability and reliability of its electro-acoustic conversion performance. This study presents an approach to better characterize the P‐wave and S‐wave velocity structure of the seafloor sediment layer using ocean bottom seismometers. The presence of low‐velocity seafloor sediment layers influences the observed seismic record at the seafloor over a broad frequency range, such that detailed knowledge of this sediment structure is essential to predict its effect on teleseismic records. We use the radial component of teleseismic P waves and autocorrelation functions of the radial, vertical, and pressure components of teleseismic P and S waves to obtain sediment layer models using the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach with parallel tempering. Synthetic tests show that the body waves constrain the P‐ and S‐wave impedances and travel times and the P‐ to S‐wave velocity ratio of the sediment layers. The proposed method resolves thin layers at a high resolution, including the uppermost thin (∼50 m to a few hundred meters) low S‐wave velocity layer. Real data applications at sites across the Pacific Ocean that are coincident with previous in situ studies demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in characterizing the seafloor sediment unit. The sediment models characterized by this new approach will allow us to more accurately predict and correct the effects of sediment layers in generating P‐ and S‐wave reverberations. Plain Language Summary: Ocean bottom seismometers are powerful tools for investigating the detailed structure of the oceanic mantle. However, most ocean bottom seismometers are placed above the low‐velocity water‐saturated sediment layer, such that their seismic records are inevitably affected by this seafloor sediment layer. Detailed constraints on the structure of the seafloor sediment layer allow us to accurately predict its effects on the observed seismic records. The seafloor sediment layer may consist of multiple discontinuities and vary regionally. This study proposes a new approach for characterizing the seismic properties of the seafloor sediment layer using teleseismic body waves recorded at ocean bottom seismometers. Synthetic tests show that the method can resolve thin sublayers within the sediment layer, such as a very thin low shear‐wave velocity layer and sharp seismic velocity jumps. Real data applications show that the sediment models obtained using this approach are in good agreement with those obtained from direct measurements and previous body‐wave analyses. Our proposed method will enable more detailed prediction and correction of the influence of the sediment layer on ocean bottom seismometer records, thereby providing more accurate constraints on deeper Earth structures. Carbon accumulation was predicted to be concentrated in coastal areas, with the highest rates in the Gulf of St Lawrence and Bay of Fundy. Large river plumes such as the Amazon River Plume are known as regions of intense biological, chemical, and physical forcing affecting the delivery and speciation of nutrients. On the shelf, sediments may act as a net source or sink of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) for the water column depending on the preservation of organic matter (OM) and its remineralization pathways in benthic environments. Previous studies on sediments of the Amazon shelf suggested that the seabed mainly acted as a sink of DIN, with denitrification as the main loss process. However, the Amazon Basin faced drastic changes over the past decades, with climate change, deforestation, and damming potentially impacting the DIN and OM loads to the estuary. These perturbations might have led to changes in benthic remineralization, calling for updates of previously studied benthic remineralization processes on the Amazon shelf. Our analysis of eight short cores confirmed the occurrence of intense recycling of mostly terrestrial material (> 60%) in the river mouth, and little organic carbon was remaining in shelf sediments. We measured a sediment oxygen demand of ~ 23 mmol m−2 d−1, which can explain the ammonification and nitrification of all the organic nitrogen (N) reaching the sediment, underlining the importance of the seabed as a sink for organic N species. Therefore, in spite of the changes in the Amazon Basin, nitrification still seems to be balanced by denitrification, as, similarly to previous results, no DIN diffused out of the sediment. The primary purpose of the paper is to identify port areas most exposed to extreme hydrodynamic conditions (waves, sea currents, seabed level change). The results of modelling using SWAN wave model, MIKE 3D model, and reanalysis and measurement data were used in paper. Swell may exceed 0.8 m for winds exceeding 15 m s‐1 from the west and south. During extreme conditions, sea currents can reach 0.4 ms‐1 in the outer part of the bay adjacent to the port. Port basins do not show changes in the thickness of the seabed for the given maximum values of bottom currents. The most extensive deposition of the seabed and shore sediments (up to 0.04 m) is found on the Gdynia‐Oksywie beach adjacent to the port and the approach fairway at the offshore currents. In the mid-1850s, Thomas Henry Huxley, who coined the term 'coccolith', described their presence in oceanic sediments dredged from the sea floor. Subsequent recognition of their occurrence in the Upper Cretaceous English Chalk, largely unconsolidated pelagic sediment, and similar, more lithified limestones in the Jurassic of the Alps, led to their being considered major rock-forming elements through much of geological time, although they are now known to be limited to the Late Triassic–Recent interval. Unlike Charles Darwin, who did not travel abroad following the voyage of the Beagle, Huxley made a number of trips to Italy and Switzerland and is recorded as a guest in the exclusive Hotel Kursaal Maloja in the Engadin in 1893. While staying there, he made a number of excursions on foot and his presence was thought significant enough that it is recorded in an inscribed granitic stone tablet, erected in 1896, describing him as'the illustrious writer and naturalist'. His rambles would have led him past outcrops of tectonically emplaced true oceanic calcareous sediment of Early Cretaceous age, here shown to have originally contained coccoliths that were largely destroyed under the imprint of Alpine metamorphism of sub-greenschist to greenschist facies. To this extent, Huxley could have come close to recognizing true oceanic sediments exposed on land, but the dissimilarity between these Swiss Alpine deposits and the friable English Chalk would not obviously have led to the investigation of the former for the organisms he had christened as 'coccoliths'. Square foundations often penetrate deeply into seabed sediments so that sufficient bearing capacity is obtained, which inevitably induces large-scale deformation in the surrounding sediments. Most of the previous research on square foundations has assumed the sediment had a uniform or linearly increasing strength profile with depth and has ignored the spatial variability of sediments. This work therefore focused on the influence of sediment spatial variability on the behavior of square foundations by applying a random large-deformation finite-element (LDFE) approach. The LDFE results indicated that the sediment heave effect could increase the bearing capacity by up to 15%. This underscores the advantages of LDFE analysis for bearing capacity predictions. More importantly, the mean bearing capacity from random analyses is smaller than the deterministic solution in uniform sediments. Consequently, deterministic analysis yields an overestimated bearing capacity. Finally, a framework was established for estimating the probability of failure at various depths considering a random sediment strength based on a factor of safety (FOS). This indicated that the partial FOS recommended by the Det Norske Veritas code is equivalent to a probability of failure of 0.1%. In coastal areas, biofilms are often subject to disturbance by hydrodynamic forcing, bioturbation and human activities. These factors affect the influences biofilms have on the sediment. To reveal these effects, we studied laboratory‐incubated and field‐collected biotic sediments reworked by disturbances, and examined their stabilities and three‐dimensional microstructures using laboratory annular flume tests and a wet‐staining X‐ray microcomputed tomography method. We find that, when subject to disturbance, biofilms do not always establish mat‐like matrices that firmly armor the seabed and bio‐stabilize sediments, but instead, have a range of effects on sediment stability, including both bio‐stabilization and destabilization. Disturbance considerably alters microbial influences on sediment stability, but is not the only control. Given equal disturbance, whether or not sediments are bio‐stabilized largely depends on the state of bio‐sediment formation. At a relatively well‐developed state, an organic‐rich, adhesive polymer network tightly interconnects large amounts of sediment particles into aggregates, forms complex internal structures, and enhances sediment stability. By contrast, some bio‐sediment formations only ever reach a less well‐developed state, where scattered organic patches bind relatively few particles into aggregates and reduce sediment stability. Microbial growth likely has two opposing effects on sediment stability, by enhancing either weight/friction or lift/drag on aggregated particles. The former has the positive effect of enhancing sediment stability, whereas the latter can result in greater flow resistance and so have the opposite effect. The total mass of individual synthetic polymers present as microplastic (MP < 2 mm) pollutants in the sediments of interconnected aquatic environments was determined adopting the Polymer Identification and Specific Analysis (PISA) procedure. The investigated area includes a coastal lakebed (Massaciuccoli), a coastal seabed (Serchio River estuarine), and a sandy beach (Lecciona), all within a natural park area in Tuscany (Italy). Polyolefins, poly(styrene) (PS), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and the polyamides poly(caprolactame) (Nylon 6) and poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (Nylon 6,6) were fractionated and quantified through a sequence of selective solvent extractions followed by either analytical pyrolysis or reversed-phase HPLC analysis of the products of hydrolytic depolymerizations under acidic and alkaline conditions. The highest concentrations of polyolefins (highly degraded, up to 864 µg/kg of dry sediment) and PS (up to 1138 µg/kg) MPs were found in the beach dune sector, where larger plastic debris are not removed by the cyclic swash action and are thus prone to further aging and fragmentation. Surprisingly, low concentrations of less degraded polyolefins (around 30 µg/kg) were found throughout the transect zones of the beach. Positive correlation was found between polar polymers (PVC, PC) and phthalates, most likely absorbed from polluted environments. PET and nylons above their respective LOQ values were found in the lakebed and estuarine seabed hot spots. The pollution levels suggest a significant contribution from riverine and canalized surface waters collecting urban (treated) wastewaters and waters from Serchio River and the much larger Arno River aquifers, characterized by a high anthropogenic pressure. The Earth, in large portions, is covered in oceans, sediments, and glaciers. High‐resolution body wave imaging in such environments often suffers from severe reverberations, that is, repeating echoes of the incoming scattered wavefield trapped in the reverberant layer, making interpretation of lithospheric layering difficult. In this study, we propose a systematic data‐driven approach, using autocorrelation and homomorphic analysis, to solve the twin problem of detection and elimination of reverberations without a priori knowledge of the elastic structure of the reverberant layers. We demonstrate, using synthetic experiments and data examples, that our approach can effectively identify the signature of reverberations even in cases where the recording seismic array is deployed in complex settings, for example, using data from (a) a land station sitting on Songliao basin, (b) an ocean bottom station in the fore‐arc setting of the Alaska amphibious community seismic experiment, and (c) a station deployed on ice‐sediment strata in the glaciers of Antarctica. The elimination of the reverberation is implemented by a frequency domain filter whose parameters are automatically tuned using seismic data alone. On glaciers where the reverberating sediment layer is sandwiched between the lithosphere and an overlying ice layer, homomorphic analysis is preferable in detecting the signature of reverberation. We expect that our technique will see wide application for high‐resolution body wave imaging across a wide variety of conditions. Because of the large differences in rock properties between these layers and the solid Earth underneath, waves get trapped in them which hampers the successful investigation of deeper layers. This is often referred to as "reverberation," waves that "echo" or "sing" again and again. In this study, we propose a systematic approach to detect and eliminate this "singing" effect using only observed data, without any knowledge of the local geological structure. Our approach extends the autocorrelation analysis, a widely used method to detect repeating patterns in time series, and also takes advantage of the homomorphic analysis, a popular technique in speech and audio processing. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using both human‐generated and real seismic data, collected from complex geosettings around the world, including in the oceans to the south of the Alaska Peninsula, sedimentary basin in northeast China, and Antarctica. On glaciers where the reverberation comes from the complicated coupled effect of ice and sediment, homomorphic analysis is preferable in detecting the signature of reverberation. Seabed sediment classification is of great significance in acoustic remote sensing. To accurately classify seabed sediments, big data are needed to train the classifier. However, acquiring seabed sediment information is expensive and time-consuming, which makes it crucial to design a well-performing classifier using small-sample seabed sediment data. To avoid data shortage, a self-attention generative adversarial network (SAGAN) was trained for data augmentation in this study. SAGAN consists of a generator, which generates data similar to the real image, and a discriminator, which distinguishes whether the image is real or generated. Furthermore, a new classifier for seabed sediment based on self-attention densely connected convolutional network (SADenseNet) is proposed to improve the classification accuracy of seabed sediment. The SADenseNet was trained using augmented images to improve the classification performance. The self-attention mechanism can scan the global image to obtain global features of the sediment image and is able to highlight key regions, improving the efficiency and accuracy of visual information processing. The proposed SADenseNet trained with the augmented dataset had the best performance, with classification accuracies of 92.31%, 95.72%, 97.85%, and 95.28% for rock, sand, mud, and overall, respectively, with a kappa coefficient of 0.934. The twelve classifiers trained with the augmented dataset improved the classification accuracy by 2.25%, 5.12%, 0.97%, and 2.64% for rock, sand, mud, and overall, respectively, and the kappa coefficient by 0.041 compared to the original dataset. In this study, SAGAN can enrich the features of the data, which makes the trained classification networks have better generalization. Seabed sediment maps underpin a variety of marine research endeavours. Seabed mapping data are available for many regions, but these usually provide discrete classifications which obscure underlying continuous properties of the sediments. Other areas are poorly surveyed, e.g., polar regions which are inaccessible due to ice cover. Here, we focus on the inaccessible North East Greenland shelf for which there are almost no seabed sediment data. We trained a random forest model to predict sediment classes from an existing map of the well‐surveyed neighbouring Barents Sea, using data on bathymetry, currents and waves. We then used our model to predict the unknown sediment distributions off East Greenland. In the process, we generated some new spatial data on previously un‐mapped properties of the Barents Sea, such as mean grain size, organic carbon and nitrogen content, porosity and permeability. The maps of both regions are available to support future research activities in the Arctic, e.g., the parameterization of benthic biogeochemistry in ecosystem models, or mapping species distributions. Abyssal hills are potential proxy records of mid‐ocean ridge faulting and volcanism, as well as the spreading rates and mantle properties that influence these processes. Satellite gravity‐based global prediction of abyssal hill root‐mean‐square (RMS) heights could provide such a proxy, but are broadly influenced off‐axis by pelagic sediment cover, which can lower their values by preferentially filling lows. Here I formulate a sediment‐corrected RMS height prediction by estimating an empirical relationship between mean RMS and sediment thickness as a function of spreading rate. I utilize these values to investigate regional variations in the spreading‐rate dependence of mean RMS across eight regions world‐wide, focusing on half spreading rates <40 mm/yr where spreading rate dependence is strongest. I find that regional variations in this relationship are significant, likely indicating heterogeneity in mantle properties between the different regions. Plain Language Summary: Abyssal hills are formed by faults and lavas at the mid‐ocean ridges, where tectonic plates spread apart, and cover much of the ocean floor. We can use their heights to infer the history and spatial pattern of the spreading process. Here I do an analysis with a global map of abyssal hill heights, applying corrections to account for the effect of sediment cover. I look at the relationship between spreading rate and height in eight different regions in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Abyssal hills are typically larger where spreading rates are slower. However, changes in this trend can provide clues about differences in Earth properties beneath spreading ridges. My results did show important trend differences across these regions. I conclude that the Earth's properties below the mid‐ocean ridges change significantly from one region to the next. In this paper, we report on the design and radiometric performance of the delta underwater gamma system, a low-cost modular, waterproof, mobile detector system that we recently developed. Radiometric performance tests indicate that the SS316 enclosure can withstand impact from rock outcrops and debris, with approximately 10% radiation absorption reported (14% at 351 keV and 8% at 1764 keV), implying minimal information loss. There is no significant difference in measurements obtained when the detector is operated vertically or horizontally. Evaluation of wave impacts on submarine landslides is an essential element in geohazard studies. The slight desaturation of sediments (due to dissociation of gas hydrates) has been found to adversely impact the slide of the sloping seabed in the Fraser River Delta in Canada. In this study, to investigate the role of wave action on the slide of partially saturated seabed slopes, an integrated FEM model is developed. Despite most earlier studies that used a simplified decoupled undrained analysis, in this article, a more realistic model for coupled flow-and-deformation processes (within the sediments) and fluid-seabed interaction is utilized. Linear wave theory and Biot's poroelasticity for the fluid and seabed domains are considered, respectively, and continuity of flux and traction is enforced along the interface of the media. The instability of the sloping seabed is investigated using strength reduction finite element method (SRFEM) with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The limitation of limit equilibrium methods in the evaluation of submarine landslides is shown through comparison with SRFEM analyses where partly-dynamic and quasi-static idealizations of seabed response are considered. Finally, the adverse impacts of slight desaturation on seabed instability are assessed, and the reduction of the stability number with seabed steepness is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold surface sediments host a seedbank of functionally diverse thermophilic bacteria. These thermophiles are present as endospores, which are widely dispersed in aquatic environments. Here, we investigated the functional potential of endospore populations in cold surface sediments heated to 80°C. Microbial production of acetate was observed at 80°C and could be enhanced by supplying additional organic carbon substrates. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene amplicon libraries from 80°C enrichments to sediments heated to lower temperatures (50–70°C) showed that temperature selects for distinct populations of endospore‐forming bacteria. Whereas sulfate‐reducing thermophiles were enriched in 50–70°C incubations, 80°C exceeds their thermal tolerance and selects for hyperthermophilic organotrophic bacteria that are similarly detected in amplicon libraries from sediments heated to 90°C. Genome‐resolved metagenomics revealed novel carbon cycling members of Symbiobacteriales, Thermosediminibacteraceae, Thermanaeromonas and Calditerricola with the genomic potential for the degradation of carbohydrates, sugars, amino acids and nucleotides. Endospores of thermophilic bacteria are deposited on seabed sediments worldwide where they remain dormant as they are buried in the accumulating sediments. Our results suggest that endospore populations could be activated by temperature increases encountered during burial and show the potential for organotrophic metabolic activity contributing to acetate generation in deep hot sediments. Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY)-rich deep-sea sediments, regarded as a potential resource, have triggered extensive investigations over the last decade. The conclusion that the REY enrichment is closely related to the phosphate components contradicts the low REY content (ΣREY) of marine phosphorites, leading to questions about the control of deep-sea phosphate on the enrichment and cycling of REY. Herein, we performed a series of chemical leaching experiments on a group of REY-rich samples (up to 5983 ppm) from two sediment cores obtained from the Pigafetta Basin in the western Pacific to investigate the phosphate and non-phosphate fractions. We found that phosphate components in deep-sea sediments, termed REY-rich phosphates, contain a mean ΣREY of 27,635 ppm and ΣREY/P 2 O 5 of >0.75, which are 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than that of marine phosphorites. The 87Sr/86Sr (0.7083–0.7092) and ε Nd (–6.41 to –5.15) of the phosphate fractions exhibited strong terrigenous attributes and fell within the range of that of bottom water since 25 Ma. Notably, the non-phosphate components, primarily phillipsite and clay, exhibited stronger terrigenous attributes, confirming extremely low sedimentation rate in the study area. The development and accumulation of REY-rich phosphate, as a consequence of low sedimentation rate in deep water together with erosion and sorting by bottom current, control the content and patterns of REY in deep-sea sediments. Fe-Mn oxides that migrated to the seafloor from the water column were limited and consumed less REY, although their strong Ce enrichment led to the loss of Ce in seawater. The phosphate components in sediments inherited the primary REY pattern of seawater and became the major REY budget on the seabed. In this study, we propose that the mineralization during the sinking of biological particles not only controls the REY distribution in the water column but also becomes an important REY source migration to the seabed and rapidly releases at the sediment–water interface. Consequently, REY can be effectively concentrated by the phosphate components under low sedimentation rates, yielding weak fractionated seawater REY patterns with lower Y/Ho ratios. During the Indonesia–Australia Submarine Survey of Hydrothermal Activity (IASSHA) 2001 cruise, several seafloor surface sediment samples were collected from Tomini Bay. The samples were geochemically examined for major and trace-element geochemistry to study the hydrothermal signature fingerprint. The Tomini Bay seafloor surface sediment sampled by gravity coring is relatively enriched in Na, P, S, Ca, Ni, Sr, and Ba mainly from a terrigenous source. The elevated concentrations of Mg, S, Cr, Co and Ni at one site suggest a contribution from a mafic terrigenous source. A manganese-rich sediment layer was detected on the sediment surface with Mn up to 9474.43 ppm. A hydrothermal signature was successfully distinguished from the manganese-rich sediment layer. Despite the lack of hydrothermal precipitates, the geochemistry of the Tomini Bay seafloor surface sediments provides evidence for submarine hydrothermal activity. Seafloor surface sediment is an alternative proxy for investigating submarine hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal signature is well recorded in the Fe/Mn-rich sediment layer and can be distinguished from measured concentrations and elemental ratios of Fe, Mn, HFSE (Zr), trace elements (Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, Zr) and REY (Y, Ce). The Mn-rich sediment layer in Tomini Bay seafloor surface sediment preserved hydrothermal fingerprint and confirmed the evidence of an active hydrothermal system in the studied area. The effect of wave skewness and sediment particle size on near-bed sediment dynamics and transport owing to wave-induced streaming is examined in this study. Here, wave-dominated flow over a flat rough bed is studied, with wave propagation forming a nonzero angle with the current. It was observed that the increase in wave skewness increases the mean sediment transport, which is consistent with prior findings for the particular situation of horizontally uniform Stokes forcing. The mean sediment transport beneath combined second-order Stokes waves and current has been investigated for fine, medium, and coarse sand, respectively. Due to inertia, both the mean bed-load vector and the depth-integrated suspended flux vector are less rotated (relative to the wave propagation direction) for coarse sand than for fine sand. High-precision habitat mapping can contribute to the identification and quantification of the human footprint on the seafloor. As a representative of seafloor habitats, seabed sediment classification is crucial for marine geological research, marine environment monitoring, marine engineering construction, and seabed biotic and abiotic resource assessment. Multibeam echo-sounding systems (MBES) have become the most popular tool in terms of acoustic equipment for seabed sediment classification. However, sonar images tend to consist of obvious noise and stripe interference. Furthermore, the low efficiency and high cost of seafloor field sampling leads to limited field samples. The factors above restrict high accuracy classification by a single classifier. To further investigate the classification techniques for seabed sediments, we developed a decision fusion algorithm based on voting strategies and fuzzy membership rules to integrate the merits of deep learning and shallow learning methods. First, in order to overcome the influence of obvious noise and the lack of training samples, we employed an effective deep learning framework, namely random patches network (RPNet), for classification. Then, to alleviate the over-smoothness and misclassifications of RPNet, the misclassified pixels with a lower fuzzy membership degree were rectified by other shallow learning classifiers, using the proposed decision fusion algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method was tested in two areas of Europe. The results show that RPNet outperforms other traditional classification methods, and the decision fusion framework further improves the accuracy compared with the results of a single classifier. Our experiments predict a promising prospect for efficiently mapping seafloor habitats through deep learning and multi-classifier combinations, even with few field samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prediction of object embedment into the seabed is important for the deployment and efficacy of submerged sensors and sensor networks, as well as for other applications such as unexploded ordnance risk assessment, subaquatic search and rescue efforts, or anchors and moorings. The embedment of objects into the seabed during placement depends on the strength parameters of the seabed sediment. However, a detailed characterization of seabed strength can be complex and costly since quality seabed samples and/or in situ testing are required. This study evaluates the importance of a detailed geotechnical seabed sediment characterization over seabed classification from geoacoustic surveying or accepting unknown seabed conditions for the prediction of seabed embedment of cylindrical objects. Monte Carlo simulation was applied to model the uncertainty of sediment strength parameters. The results suggest that prior knowledge of the general sediment type (e.g., fine-grained versus coarse-grained as determined from side scan sonar imaging) significantly improves the precision of the embedment predictions over unknown conditions, reducing the coefficient of variation (CV) in prediction of percent embedment (PE) by about 50 % to 65 %. Performing a detailed geotechnical testing of sediment strength represented a further improvement by 15 % to 35 % over the knowledge of sediment type. Both the mean and standard deviation of PE in fine-grained sediments are at least about 3 times the values for coarse-grained sediments indicating a wider distribution of PE with deeper embedment for cohesive fine-grained soils. The embedment behavior is a function of the method of deployment (free fall with a certain speed versus placement with no speed) in stiff cohesive sediments but is less relevant in soft sediments since PE values are always greater than 100 % (i.e., full embedment). Based on a substantial number of seabed sediment samples and corresponding acoustic characteristic and physical property test data collected in the continental shelf area of the northwestern South China Sea, this study employed a sound speed ratio correction model to analyze the correlation between the sound speed ratio of seabed sediments and parameters such as porosity, density, mean grain size, and water content. This study resulted in the development of both single-parameter and double-parameter empirical formulas for the sound speed ratio of seabed sediments in this marine region. The determination coefficients (r2) for the single-parameter empirical formulas based on physical properties, excluding the mean grain size (r2 ≤ 0.75), were all above 0.78, indicating a strong correlation. Additionally, the fitting curve at 100 kHz was slightly greater than that at 50 kHz, consistent with the acoustic dispersion characteristics of sediments. To assess the applicability of the empirical formulas to different maritime areas, the formulas derived from the South Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea were compared with those of the study area. The results indicated that the empirical formulas for the sound speed ratio established in this study have general applicability, especially for sediments with low porosity, high density, and low mean grain size. In addition, the determination coefficient of the dual-parameter empirical formula for the sound speed ratio–porosity–mean grain size is superior to that of the single-parameter empirical formula for the sound speed ratio–mean grain size. Through comparative studies with other marine areas, it was found that there are certain differences in the relationships between porosity and mean grain size established in different marine areas. Therefore, based on the rough sphere model, this study transforms the GS model into a single-parameter model built on either porosity or mean grain size. The error analysis results indicate that the single-parameter GS model has a smaller error than the measured data. However, the GS model controlled by a single parameter performs poorly compared to the predicted curves of the sound speed ratio–porosity and the sound speed ratio–mean grain size fitted in this study. In 2007, China discovered a hydrothermal anomaly in the Longqi hydrothermal area of the Southwest Indian Ridge. It was the first seabed hydrothermal area discovered in the ultraslow spreading ocean ridge in the world. Understanding the types of seabed sediments in this area is critical for studying the typical topography and geological characteristics of deep-sea seabed hydrothermal areas. The traditional classification of deep-seabed sediments adopts box sampling or gravity column sampling and identifies the types of seabed sediments through laboratory analysis. However, this classification method has some shortcomings, such as the presence of discrete sampling data points and the failure of full-coverage detection. The geological sampling in deep-sea areas is particularly inefficient. Hence, in this study, the EM122 multibeam sonar data collected in the Longqi hydrothermal area, Southwest Indian Ridge, in April 2019 are used to analyze multibeam backscatter intensity. Considering various errors in the complex deep-sea environment, obtaining backscatter intensity data can truly reflect seabed sediment types. Through unsupervised and supervised classification, the seabed sediment classification in the Longqi hydrothermal area was studied. The results showed that the accuracy of supervised classification is higher than that of unsupervised classification. Thus, unsupervised classification is primarily used for roughly classifying sediment types without on-site geological sampling. Combining the genetic algorithm (GA) and the support vector machine (SVM) neural network, deep-sea sediment types, such as deep-sea clay and calcareous ooze, can be identified rapidly and efficiently. Based on comparative analysis results, the classification accuracy of the GA-SVM neural network is higher than that of the SVM neural network, and it can be effectively applied to the high-precision classification and recognition of deep-sea sediments. In this paper, we demonstrate the fine-scale morphology and surface sediment structure characteristics of the deep-sea seafloor by finely processing high-precision deep-sea multibeam backscatter intensity data. This research can provide accurate seabed topography and sediment data for the exploration of deep-sea hydrothermal resources and the assessment of benthic habitats in deep-sea hydrothermal areas. Subtidal marine sediments are one of the planet's primary carbon stores and strongly influence the oceanic sink for atmospheric CO2. By far the most widespread human activity occurring on the seabed is bottom trawling/dredging for fish and shellfish. A global first‐order estimate suggested mobile demersal fishing activities may cause 0.16–0.4 Gt of organic carbon (OC) to be remineralized annually from seabed sediment carbon stores (Sala et al., 2021). There are, however, many uncertainties in this calculation. Here, we discuss the potential drivers of change in seabed sediment OC stores due to mobile demersal fishing activities and conduct a literature review, synthesizing studies where this interaction has been directly investigated. Under certain environmental settings, we hypothesize that mobile demersal fishing would reduce OC in seabed stores due to lower production of flora and fauna, the loss of fine flocculent material, increased sediment resuspension, mixing and transport and increased oxygen exposure. Reductions would be offset to varying extents by reduced faunal bioturbation and community respiration, increased off‐shelf transport and increases in primary production from the resuspension of nutrients. Studies which directly investigated the impact of demersal fishing on OC stocks had mixed results. A finding of no significant effect was reported in 61% of 49 investigations; 29% reported lower OC due to fishing activities, with 10% reporting higher OC. In relation to remineralization rates within the seabed, four investigations reported that demersal fishing activities decreased remineralization, with three reporting higher remineralization rates. Patterns in the environmental and experimental characteristics between different outcomes were largely indistinct. More evidence is urgently needed to accurately quantify the impact of anthropogenic physical disturbance on seabed carbon in different environmental settings and to incorporate full evidence‐based carbon considerations into global seabed management. The design, manufacture, and commissioning of a global positioning system enabled sampler instrument conceived for the retrieval of seabed sediments are described. This system was designed for sampling in environmental assessment applications and, especially, those requirements that might include insoluble, anthropogenic radioactivity derived from the effluent from nuclear facilities. Once triggered, the sampler operates autonomously for the recovery of samples by settling in the sampling environment, and it is compatible with submersion in fresh water and also with an off-the-shelf, submersible, remotely operated vehicle. A number of tests have been carried out to determine the efficiency and efficacy of the sample recovery performed by the system and the extent to which the recovery of samples disturbs neighboring sediments. Millions of migrating and wintering waders depend on coastal areas and estuaries for feeding and to replenish body reserves. These habitats are dynamic, with changing intertidal flats and sediments due to natural and climate-driven processes. The aims of this study were to examine whether physical conditions of intertidal flats such as geomorphology and sediment compositions could explain abundance of wader species, and furthermore whether changes in these conditions over time influenced changes in abundance of waders. In addition to physical structures such as datum (level), slope and sediment composition of intertidal flats, dynamic variables connected to tidal cycles such as distance of the waterline from the coast and duration of water cover were included. Penetration of the sea floor was measured as a proxy for sediment composition. The study was conducted in the Danish section of the Wadden Sea during 1981–1986 and 2008–2009 with additional data from 2020. The focus was on 12 widespread wader species. PCA analysis revealed that wader species were distributed in relation to tidal cycles such as duration of water cover and the position of waterline and to the physical structures, datum, slope and penetration, in decreasing order. With regard to the physical structures, pairwise comparisons of distribution of waders species showed that mean datum (level) was significantly different for 51 pairs of species out of 66 comparisons, mean penetration values differed for 34 pairs, and mean slope differed for 26 pairs of wader species. Long-term changes of physical structures of transects revealed that changes of densities of 10 wader species were significantly correlated with changes per year in one or more of the physical structures: seven wader species were significantly correlated with changes per year of mean datum (level) of transects (Lapwing was positively correlated while Avocet, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit and Redshank were negatively correlated), five species with mean slope (Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover and Knut were positively correlated and Grey Plover and Redshank were negatively correlated), and three species with mean penetration values (sediment composition) of transects (Avocet and Bar-tailed Godwit were positively correlated and Lapwing was negatively correlated). The study shows that long-term changes of physical structures of intertidal flats affected abundance of wader species. Avoiding in-situ skidding of tracked deep-sea mining vehicles on soft sediment and reducing disturbance to soft sediments are the basic requirements for ensuring the regular operation of seabed mining. The in-situ skidding problem of the tracked deep-sea mining vehicle can be explained by the block shear failure phenomenon of deep-sea soft sediment. We analyzed the force state and elastic-plastic state of soft sediment disrupted by a crawling grouser and established the block failure model. The elastic-plastic failure range calculations obtained in the model is used to select the spacing between adjacent grousers to maximize the thrust provided by the grouser. Due to the irreversibility of plastic failure, the range of plastic zone failure is used to measure the extent of the sediment disturbance by the grouser. By analyzing the influence of multiple parameters on the failure range of the plastic zone, we provide direction for finding ways to reduce sediment disturbance. It is found that among these parameters, the grouser's width and height, which represent the shape parameters of the grouser, have the most critical effect on the plastic failure range of the sediment. But when the width exceeds 0.3 m, and the height exceeds 0.2 m, the benefit of reducing the failure range by increasing the grouser's width and height will be minimal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The kinetic characteristics governing methane conversion into solid hydrates within seabed sediments influence hydrate accumulation and resource distribution, which is significant for the evaluation of global natural gas hydrate reserves and the implication of hydrate development. However, the influence of sediment particle size on methane hydrate formation kinetics remains unclear. In this study, simulating in situ conditions of the seafloor, the kinetics behaviors of CH 4 hydrate formation within saline porous sediments were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the methane hydrate formation rate does not exhibit a strictly unidirectional change with changed quartz sand particle size. The unidirectionality and magnitude of hydrate formation rate change are simultaneously influenced by both quartz sand particle size and water saturation levels. The different effective gas-liquid contact area is the primary factor underlying the occurrence of these phenomena. However, for more porous clay sediments with greater specific surface area, the theory of effective gas-liquid contact area becomes inapplicable. The addition of clay to quartz sand sediment inversely inhibits the methane hydrate formation, which is caused by water absorption. Renewable thermal energy from seabed sediment is used for heating and cooling houses in Suvilahti, Vaasa, Finland. Innovative coaxial polyethylene pipes (Refla) filled with heat collection fluid are laid horizontally in the sediment layer. This study aims to evaluate the adequacy and possible overuse of this shallow geothermal energy. This entailed a numerical analysis of the heat relations of a "coaxial closed-loop geothermal system (CCGS)" to investigate the thermal behavior of the sediment. The numerical model was developed in Midas GTS NX software with a thermal analysis module. The objective was to understand temperature fluctuation in the sediment, which is influenced not only by geothermal energy exploitation, but also by seasonal weather. The numerical model, due to its design, provided information mainly about changes in sediment temperature due to the geothermal energy exploitation during the different seasons. The results show that in the first third of the total length of the Refla pipes, the sediment environment is significantly affected by energy exploitation's temperature loading. It is advisable to exclude the first third from an analysis of total geothermal energy reserves. The ability to accurately map the seabed sediments plays an important role in seabed habitat development and stakeholder decision-making. In conventional seabed sediment classification methods, maps of seabed sediment are provided in categorical form (sediment classes). Therefore, the prediction of the sediment compositions in multibeam observational units has become a difficult issue in using conventional methods. To tackle this challenge, a new strategy is developed to realize the subpixel decomposition of seabed sediments. A key attribute of the proposed sediment decomposition model is that it utilizes spatial–spectral information provided by multibeam backscatter angular responses (ARs). First, an AR feature extraction method utilizing a bidirectional sliding window is proposed and a $K$ -means clustering algorithm is used for segmentation. Second, a deep-sea sediment decomposition model based on the fuzzy method is constructed by selecting experimental samples that are distributed within a single clustering region. This model inverts the abundance of each sediment composition in the form of membership degrees. Finally, deep-sea multibeam survey data collected from the central Philippine Sea are used for verification. The overall mean square error and coefficient of determination reach 0.043 and 0.856, respectively. The experimental results show that the new method can accurately decompose deep-sea sediment compositions, thus providing a new technique for deep-sea acoustic sediment remote sensing and quantitative analysis. Marine hydrate exploitation may trigger the seabed geological disaster, such as seafloor collapse and landslide. It is critically important to understand the mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediment. Strain-softening observation is a typical behavior of hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS) and exhibits more significant at higher hydrate saturation. This paper performed a series of triaxial compression tests on methane hydrate-bearing sand to analyze the influence rule and mechanism of hydrate saturation on the strain-softening characteristic, stiffness, and strength and introduced the strain-softening index to quantificationally characterize the strain-softening behaviors of HBS with different hydrate saturations. Based on the analyses on the mechanical behavior of HBS, the Duncan–Chang model is extended to address the stress-strain curves of HBS. Two empirical formulas with hydrate saturation embedded are used to characterize the enhanced initial modulus and strength for HBS, respectively. To address the strain-softening behavior of HBS, the modified Duncan–Chang model introduced a damage factor into the strength of HBS. To validate the modified Duncan–Chang model, four different triaxial compression tests are simulated. The good consistence between simulated result and experimental data demonstrates that the modified Duncan–Chang model is capable of reflecting the influence of hydrate saturation not only on the stiffness and strength but also on the strain-softening characteristics of HBS. Measurements of seabed sediment grain size and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen were carried out on seabed sediment samples collected using a 0.1 m HT ht Day grab. The hourly near-bed shear stress ( HT ht ) and occurrence of sediment movement were calculated for each point on the unstructured grid of the Clyde using the I bedshear i package (Wilson and Heath, 2019). Seabed surficial sediment properties are a defining feature of shelf-sea ecosystems, determining organic matter storage, nutrient recycling and contaminant degradation, turbidity, and habitat availability for and productivity of benthos and fish (Ehrenhauss et al., 2004; Janssen et al., 2005; Kamann et al., 2007; Neumann et al., 2017b; Serpetti et al., 2016). Sub-bottom profiling traditionally uses low-frequency signals (less than 20 kHz) to examine layered structures of the bottom sediment in large depth, but it has some limitations in deep-sea surveying. The surficial sediment within several meters under the water–sediment boundary in the deep sea cannot be distinguished clearly. In this study, a high-frequency sub-bottom profiler (HFSBP) was developed and applied to a manned deep-submergence vehicle (DSV), named Deep-Sea Warrior, to obtain a centimeter-level resolution stratum of several meters in the deep-sea surficial sediment. Twelve diving tests were carried out, the diversity of surficial benthic profiles on the northern slopes of the South China Sea was shown up for the first time and as many as four layers profiles were obtained in the low bending canyon region, rock surface profiles, discontinuous stratum structures and thick surficial sediment in the deeper region. Continuous and clear stratum structures within a range of about 2 m on the seabed surface sediment were obtained in 11 of the 12 dives. As the dive sites took a certain dispersive distribution, it reflected that the stratum structure of surficial sediment was prevalent in the northern slopes area of the South China Sea for the most part. To verify the effectiveness of HFSBP, a laboratory test in an anechoic tank was performed, and the experiment results verified the layered ability and the thickness measurement stability of it. The comparison was performed with shipboard data of deep-sea sub-bottom profiler (SBP) Bathy-2010, and the HFSBP results were obviously better than those of Bathy-2010 measurement. Waves and tidal currents can interact to produce strong seabed shear stress and mobilization of sediments on continental shelves. Modelled wave and tidal current data for a 3-year period were used in a combined-flow sediment transport model to simulate the seabed shear stresses and the mobilization of uniform medium sand on the continental shelves of Canada. The modelling results are presented to establish the first national framework of seabed disturbance and sediment mobility on the continental shelves of Canada. Strong waves and tidal currents on the Canadian continental shelves produce mean bed shear velocity >5 cm·s−1. Medium sand can be mobilized >50% of the time over many areas on the shelves. The mobilization by tidal currents occurs over 36% and by waves over 50% of the shelf area, demonstrating that mobilization of sediments is dominated by waves on the Canadian continental shelves. Combined shear stresses due to wave and tidal current interaction further increase sediment mobilization to over 68% of the shelf area. The spatial variation of the relative importance of wave and tidal disturbances allows classification of the continental shelves into six disturbance types. Innovative Seabed Disturbance (SDI) and Sediment Mobility (SMI) indices are proposed to quantify the seabed exposure to oceanographic processes and sediment mobilization, incorporating both the magnitude and frequency of these processes. The proposed SDI and SMI, together with the disturbance type classification, can be used as standard parameters to best quantify seabed disturbance and sediment mobility on other shelves of the world. Bottom trawls impact the seafloor and benthic ecosystem. One of the direct physical impacts is the mobilization of sediment in the wake of trawl gear components that are in contact with or are close to the seabed. The quantity of sediment mobilized is related to the hydrodynamic drag of the gear components and the type of sediment over which they are trawled. Here we present a methodology to estimate the sediment mobilization from hydrodynamic drag. The hydrodynamic drag of individual gear components is estimated using empirical measurements of similarly shaped objects, including cylinders, cubes, and nets. The method is applied to beam trawls used in the Dutch North Sea flatfish fishery and validated using measurements of beam trawl drag from the literature. Netting contributes most to the hydrodynamic drag of pulse trawls, while the tickler chains and chain mat comprise most of the hydrodynamic drag of conventional beam trawls. Taking account of the silt content of the areas trawled and the number of different beam trawl types used by the fleet, sediment mobilization is estimated as 9.2 and 5.3 kg m−2 for conventional 12 m beam and pulse trawls, respectively, and 4.2 and 4.3 kg m−2 for conventional 4.5 m beam and pulse trawls. Estimates of the sub‐seabed fluid flow rates are important for understanding hydrological budgets, biogeochemical cycles, and physical properties of the sediments. Fluid flow rates and directions, however, are difficult to measure, particularly beneath the seafloor. We developed a rapid method to estimate regional fluid migration rates using an extensive database of seismic reflection profiles taken offshore SW Taiwan. We observe bottom‐simulating reflector (BSR) that deflects toward the seafloor near thrust faults that indicate localized heat flow variations. At these sites, advecting warm pore fluids transport heat to shallower depths and force the BSR shallower. Our 2D steady‐state numerical method quantifies the fluid flow rates required to cause such thermal anomalies. We found that fluid flow rates near the trench of the accretionary wedge range between 0.1 and 16 m3 yr−1 m−1, with slower and faster rates generally associated with slope basin discontinuities and faults, respectively. To evaluate the fluid pattern evolution from subduction to collision, we studied three transects: one along the Manila subduction zone in the south and two in Taiwan's initial collision zone in the north. We quantified the fluid budget and partitioning of fluid flow between focused discharge through faults and diffusive flow through the wedge. Faults in Taiwan's accretionary wedge capture on average 25% of the total dewatering flux in the younger subduction zone and 38.5% in the tectonically mature collision zone. Our method provides estimates of fluid migration rates along convergent plate boundaries, and contributes to our understanding of focused fluid flow processes in many other regions. We developed a rapid numerical method to constrain 2D focused fluid flow rates using seismically derived thermal structure and applied it to the subduction‐collision zone system off SW Taiwan. To study the influence of long‐term tectonic processes on the fluid budget, we remotely mapped the distribution and amount of focused fluid flow across the convergent margin, using a widespread shallow subbottom temperature field derived from a spatially dense seismic data set covering an area of more than 25,000 km2. We combined the results with other previously published geophysical data sets to calculate the margin fluid budget. We found stronger fluid advection from depth along the collision zone, where thicker sediments are deformed more intensively. Our approach to quantify fluid fluxes is applicable to a range of tectonic regimes and can provide critical insight into local, regional, or even global fluid budget estimates. High quality quantitative maps of seabed sedimentary physical and geochemical properties have numerous research and conservation applications, including habitat and ecosystem modelling, marine spatial planning and ecosystem service mapping. However, such maps are lacking for many ecologically and economically important marine areas. Using legacy data supplemented by measurements from recent benthic surveys, modelled hydrodynamic variables and high resolution bathymetry, quantitative maps for the top 10 cm of seabed sediment were generated via a combination of statistical and machine-learning techniques for the Firth of Clyde, a semi-enclosed coastal sea on the west coast of Scotland. The maps include sediment fractions of mud, sand and gravel, whole-sediment median grain size, sediment permeability and porosity, rates of natural seabed abrasion, and sediment particulate organic carbon and nitrogen content. Properties were mapped over an unstructured grid, so that very high resolutions were achieved close to the coastlines, where sediments may be expected to be spatially heterogeneous. Overall, the maps reveal extensive areas of very low sediment permeability coupled with low rates of natural seabed disturbance. Moreover, muddy sediments in the inner Firth of Clyde, Inchmarnock Water and the sea lochs are enriched in organic carbon and nitrogen relative to the sediments of the outer Firth of Clyde. As a demonstration of the value of these maps, the standing stock of organic carbon and nitrogen in the surficial sediments of the Clyde was calculated. The Clyde stores 3.42 and 0.33 million tonnes of organic carbon and nitrogen in the top 10 cm of seabed sediment, respectively, substantially contributing to Scotland's coastal and shelf blue carbon stocks. Summary: Fungi dominated the eukaryotic group in the anaerobic sedimentary environment below the ocean floor where they play an essential ecological role. However, the adaptive mechanism of fungi to these anaerobic environments is still unclear. Here, we reported the anaerobic adaptive mechanism of Schizophyllum commune 20R‐7‐F01, isolated from deep coal‐bearing sediment down to ~2 km below the seafloor, through biochemical, metabolomic and transcriptome analyses. The fungus grows well, but the morphology changes obviously and the fruit body develops incompletely under complete hypoxia. Compared with aerobic conditions, the fungus has enhanced branched‐chain amino acid biosynthesis and ethanol fermentation under anaerobic conditions, and genes related to these metabolisms have been significantly up‐regulated. Additionally, the fungus shows novel strategies for synthesizing ethanol by utilizing both glycolysis and ethanol fermentation pathways. The threshold of the sediment initial movement is closely related to marine structure scour. In complex marine environment, the relative density of seabed is usually changed by liquefaction and scour that is caused by currents and waves. It affects the scour depth and scour time scale which have been noted recently. However, the effect of relative density on sediment movement was mostly ignored in previous studies. In this paper, a series of tests were conducted to investigate the incipient motion under different relative density conditions on different seabeds. Subsequently, the internal friction force was introduced to describe the relative density effect, and an incipient motion model was built. Accordingly, a unified sediment incipient motion velocity function that considers relative density is proposed. Based on this function, the critical bed shear stress was assessed. A new theory was then evaluated in terms of the critical bed shear stress. Finally, the percentage of internal friction force to the whole resistance was discussed. Results indicated the significance of considering the relative density effect in predicting small-sized sediment movement. The new function provides better prediction accuracy with an acceptable error of 20%. This study proposes a new constitutive model to simulate the mechanical behavior of methane hydrate-bearing sediments, by modifying the SANISAND-C model originally designed for sands with low cement content. To capture the distinctive cementation effect of methane hydrate (MH), modifications are made to the state parameter and bonding degradation law of the SANISAND-C model. In addition, the initial bonding strength of MH is not only determined by MH saturation but also by a condition parameter that depends on temperature, pore pressure, and salinity. The densification effect caused by MH pore-filling and grain-coating is captured by replacing the original void ratio in the elastic and plastic moduli of the SANISAND-C model with a reduced void ratio. The model is verified through a comparison of its predictions not only with experimental data but also through discrete element method simulations that cover a wide range of loading paths including drained and undrained true triaxial tests. The model successfully captures the stiffness, strength and dilatancy enhancements induced by MH, as well as the temperature, pore pressure, and salinity-dependent behavior of sediment.
