The sediment mixed layer (SML) in the deep ocean is an important interface with a rich diversity of benthic organisms. With increasing ocean mineral exploration, and eventual mining, the effect of sediment mixing on deep ocean ecosystems has raised considerable concern. We evaluate the distribution patterns and driving factors of SML depth in deep ocean nodule fields using naturally occurring 210Pb–226Ra isotopes. Results show that average SML depth has increased in Mn‐nodule fields since the end of the last century. SML processes are associated with significant desorption of 226Ra from sediments, resulting in a departure from radioactive equilibrium. By estimating possible driving factors, we conclude that anthropogenic exploration activities, rather than natural physical and/or biological drivers, are the most likely mechanism for intensified sediment mixing. 210Pb–226Ra disequilibria may be a potential tracer for quantifying the impact of human exploration on deep‐ocean sediment mixing and associated biological and geochemical effects. Plain Language Summary: The surface sediment mixed layer (SML) in the deep ocean is essential to benthic community structure and the biogeochemical cycling of many elements. The typical depth of mixed layers in the global deep ocean is <15 cm, which is mainly driven by natural biological and/or physical forces. By mapping sediment excess 210Pb profiles throughout the ocean, we found the depth of the SML in manganese nodule fields has increased significantly since the end of the twentieth century (reaching to >40 cm). The determine that the deepened mixed sediment layer is related to human exploration activities rather than other previously recognized natural drivers like bioturbation, internal solitary waves, and submarine storms. Keen attentions should be paid to the deepening and associated effects of sediment mixing in the deep ocean as human demand for critical materials continues to increase in the Anthropocene. Exploration approaches that involve low or negligible disturbance to deep‐ocean sediment should be encouraged. The Bhumibol Dam on Ping River, Thailand, was constructed in 1964 to provide water for irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood mitigation, fisheries, and saltwater intrusion control to the Great Chao Phraya River basin. Many studies, carried out near the basin outlet, have suggested that the dam impounds significant sediment, resulting in shoreline retreat of the Chao Phraya Delta. In this study, the impact of damming on the sediment regime is analyzed through the sediment variation along the Ping River. The results show that the Ping River drains a mountainous region, with sediment mainly transported in suspension in the upper and middle reaches. By contrast, sediment is mostly transported as bedload in the lower basin. Variation of long-term total sediment flux data suggests that, while the Bhumibol Dam does effectively trap sediment, there was only a 5% reduction in sediment supply to the Chao Phraya River system because of sediment additions downstream. 234Th is widely used as a natural tracer for study of biological mixing and particle scavenging processes in the ocean. This naturally occurring nuclide serves this purpose due to its convenient half-life (24.1 days), constant rate of production from 238U dissolved in seawater, and its strong tendency to attach to particles in seawater. As a beta/gamma emitter, 234Th may be determined using low-level gas-flow proportional counting, gamma spectrometry, and liquid scintillation counting (LSC). We describe here a technique which combines Cerenkov counting to evaluate 234Th (via 234Pa) with LSC alpha counting of 230Th added to the samples as a yield tracer. Our separation approach is based on a sample preparation procedure for marine sediments using nitric acid leaching in a “hot block”, and extraction chromatography (TEVA·Resin) for Th isolation. Samples are counted in plastic LSC vials, using Ultima Gold AB cocktail, in 1M H3PO4 media. A series of sediment samples spiked with known amounts of 234Th yielded activities within a few percent of the anticipated values. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Radon flux via diffusion from sediments and other materials may be determined in the laboratory by circulating air through the sample and a radon detector in a closed loop. However, this approach is complicated by the necessity of having to determine the total air volume in the system and accounting for any small air leaks that can arise if using extended measurement periods. We designed a simple open-loop configuration that includes a measured mass of wet sediment and water inside a gas-tight reaction flask connected to a drying system and a radon-in-air analyzer. Ambient air flows through two charcoal columns before entering the reaction vessel to eliminate incoming radon. After traveling through the reaction flask, the air passes the drier and the radon analyzer and is then vented. After some time, the radon activity will reach a steady state depending upon the airflow rate. With this approach, the radon flux via diffusion is simply the product of the steady-state radon activity (Bq/m 3 ) multiplied by the airflow rate (mL/min). We demonstrated that this setup could produce good results for materials that produce relatively high radon fluxes. We also show that a modified closed system approach, including radon removal of the incoming air by charcoal filtration in a bypass, can produce very good results including samples with very low emission rates. A new method for measuring 224Ra in sediments is established by use of a pulsed ionization chamber (PIC). Based on the difference in their half-lives, 220Rn can be distinguished from 222Rn so that one can easily measure 224Ra and its parent 228Th in sediment samples. Results show that the measurement efficiency is 0.22 ± 0.02 cpm/dpm, and is not readily affected by moisture. At an optimum airflow rate of 1.2 L/min, the precision of the 224Ra and 228Th measurements is estimated at ±8%. Based on controlled experimental field application and a field application, we show that the 224Ra/228Th disequilibrium in sediments can be assessed and both 224Ra deficits and ingrowth to equilibrium may be quantified. We have investigated the cycling of naturally occurring 210Po in waters from seasonally anoxic Pond B (South Carolina) and permanently anoxic Jellyfish Lake (Palau Islands, western Pacific Ocean). The maximum 210Po activity in Pond B was about 14 mBq L-1 during summer. This activity was much higher than its parent 210Pb activity, indicating excess 210Po inputs from bottom sediments. The summertime excess 210Po activity was accompanied by increases in Fe and Mn, suggesting 210Po diffusion from bottom sediments under reducing conditions. Activity of 210Po was much lower under winter oxic conditions, most likely a consequence of efficient coprecipitation with Fe and Mn oxides that occurs with destruction of Pond B stratification. In permanently anoxic Jellyfish Lake, the maximum activity of 210Po was 133 mBq L-1, among the highest reported from any surface aqueous environment A box model suggests that the release of only 2% of 210Po, produced from the 210Pb in the bottom sediments, would account for the observed excess. Our results suggest that 210Po can be naturally enriched in anoxic environments to a high level, perhaps in concert with the Fe and Mn redox cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
