Gas hydrates are a potential future energy resource and are widely distributed in marine sediments and permafrost areas. The physical properties and mechanical behavior of gas hydrate-bearing sediments are of great significance to seafloor stability and platform safety. In 2013, a large number of pressure cores were recovered during China's second gas hydrate drilling expedition in the South China Sea. In this study, we determined the gas hydrate distribution, saturation, physical properties, and mechanical behavior of the gas hydrate-bearing sediments by conducting Multi-Sensor Core Logger measurements and triaxial and permeability tests. Disseminated gas hydrates, gas hydrate veins, and gas hydrate slabs were observed in the sediments. The gas hydrate distribution and saturation are spatially heterogeneous, with gas hydrate saturations of 0%–55.3%. The peak deviatoric stress of the gas hydrate-bearing sediments is 0.14–1.62 MPa under a 0.15–2.3 MPa effective confining stress. The permeability is 0.006– 0.095 × 10 − 3 μ m 2 , and it decreases with increasing gas hydrate saturation and burial depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The waters offshore the Shandong Peninsula separate the North Yellow Sea from the South Yellow Sea, and receive a large amount of terrestrial material from Chinese and Korean rivers, making it an ideal area for studying land-sea interactions. However, little attention has been given to measuring sediment transportation in most previous studies. Based on an analysis in composition of major and trace elements and particle size characteristics from 62 surface sediment samples from the northeastern region off Shandong Peninsula, the type, element composition, and controlling factors of the surface sediments were investigated. In addition, the transportation of sediments from source to sink was described from measured thermohaline data. The results show two types of surface sediments: sandy silt and silt. The sediments were mainly terrestrial; and marine carbonate had little effect on sediment composition. Shown on a binary diagram of Rb/Sc to Co/Sc, the Huanghe (Yellow) and Changjiang (Yangtze) rivers are the main sources of surface sediments in the study area. The component mixing model showed that the relative contribution of sediment from the Huanghe River was up to 92%, followed by the Changjiang River (8%). The Yellow Sea Warm Current and the North Shandong Peninsula Coastal Current met at ∼37.7°N in the study area, and were the main forces carrying sediment from the two main river sources. However, there was a deficit of transported material into the study area in summer. The secondary distribution of sediment from the two river sources was controlled by tidal currents and waves. Based on field test and laboratory test, physical and mechanical properties of 320 surface sediments and 12 gravity cores collected from the Zhejiang-Fujian coastal area were analyzed. The results showed that the fine-grained soil in this area was mainly composed of mud and muddy clay, with a small amount of clayey silt, silty clay and clay. They were generally characterized by high-water content, high void ratio, high compressibility, high plasticity and low shear strength. Furthermore, the factors caused the poor physical and mechanical properties of the fine-grained soil have been analyzed from the microcosmic aspects (particle component, mineral component, chemical component, microstructure) and macroscopic aspects (sediment source, hydrodynamic environment). The analytical results revealed that those microcosmic and macroscopic factors had important relationship with the physical and mechanical properties of soil. If we can understand those affecting factors in the forming process of the sediments better, it is beneficial for us to study their physical and mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper, the QS-1 sediments (3.64 m long; at 1500 m water depth) collected from the Qiongdongnan Basin were used to analyze the relationship between sedimentary geochemical anomalies and methane seepage. Mo-U covariation, Ce anomaly, and Mg/Ca-Sr/Ca end-member model were analyzed to identify the variations of redox environment and authigenic carbonate precipitation, finally constructing the methane release events in this study area. These observations suggest that: 1) Significant Mo/U enrichments and Ba front indicate the presence of high-flux active methane seepage with SMI of 260 cmbsf in this study area. The depositional environment evolved as oxic-anoxic-reducing-sulfide environment from bottom to top, as evidenced by Mo-U covariation and Ce anomaly; 2) Based on Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca end-member model proposed by Bayon et al. (2007), the high-Mg calcite was the dominant authigenic carbonate currently which usually precipitated behind the methane seep events; and 3) The active cold seep can be divided into three methane release events (MREs): MRE I, the most intense methane seepage occurred at 22.1 ka BP; MRE II, three low-intensity methane seepage occurred at 19.3, 16.5, and 11.3 ka BP, respectively; and MRE III, the continuous methane seep began at 9.3 ka BP until now. Methane seepage has been extensively observed in various continental margin settings. It has profound effects on the marine redox environment and the molybdenum (Mo) cycles in marine sediments. Therefore, there has been much recent attention on the redox-sensitive behavior of Mo in methane seepage environments. However, the characteristics of the Mo isotope composition in the cold-seep system remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed geochemical analyses, including Mo content and isotope composition, on sediment samples (core QDN-MS6) from the "Haima" cold-seep deposit area in the South China Sea. The analysis reveals a significant concentration of authigenic pyrite in the mid-section of QDN-MS6 core (373–403 cm). Moreover, the δ34S value in this interval is notably elevated with high total sulfur/total organic carbon ratio. Additionally, the sediments in the mid-section exhibits substantial enrichment in Mo (enrichment factors of Mo ranging from 5.29 to 39.32). This implies that the sediments in the mid-section are influenced by sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane. Most notably, the sediments in the mid-section displayed distinct low δ98Mo values (with an average of −0.7‰). After careful consideration, we ruled out the influence of organic matter, an oxic environment, a weakly sulfidic environment, and incomplete removal of thiopolybdate as contributing factors. Based on δ56Fe-Fe/Al ratios, (Mo–U) enrichment factors, and As enrichment factors, we propose that the "benthic Fe-Mn redox shuttle process" is the primary cause of the observed light δ98Mo signatures in sediments. This newly identified mechanism sheds light on Mo isotope cycling in methane seepage environments and enhances our understanding of the Mo isotope cycling process. • δ34S and enrichment of Mo and U indicated sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane in the 373–403 cm section. • Clear low δ98Mo and δ56Fe characteristics were evident in the sediments of methane seepage. • The reductive dissolution of Fe and Mn (oxy)hydroxides was the main driver of low δ98Mo. • The benthic Fe–Mn redox shuttle process is an important contributor to the Mo source in methane seepage environments.
