The southwestern South Yellow Sea (SYS) is influenced by tremendous sediment loads derived from the Yellow River (Huanghe) and the Yangtze River (Changjiang). However, the influence of Yangtze River sediments and their transport mechanism in this area remain unresolved. In this study, we present the grain size, clay minerals, and elemental compositions of surface sediments from the southwestern SYS, together with an analysis of field observation seawater salinity and suspended sediment data, to investigate the provenance and transport mechanism of the sediments. Discrimination diagrams of clay minerals, Cr/Th vs. Sc/Al, and rare earth elements (REEs) indicate that the southwestern SYS sediments are mainly derived from the old Yellow River subaqueous delta and the Yangtze River. Interestingly, Yangtze sediments enter the SYS in ways that differ seasonally. In summer, Yangtze sediments may be transported into the central SYS by the dispersion of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) and may also be transported northwestward by the Subei Coastal Current (SCC) to the area off the Jiangsu coast. In winter, the Yangtze-derived sediments deposited off the Jiangsu coast in summer are transported into the central and/or even north SYS under the combined effects of the SCC, Yellow Sea Coastal Current (YSCC), and Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC). Throughout the transport processes, there is an alternation between a source and sink of Yangtze sediments off the Jiangsu coast; the coast serves as a sink of Yangtze sediments in summer but as a source of SYS sedimentation in winter. Human–environment interactions across historical periods in China have been well reconstructed over the past decade; however, few studies have focused on southern China, particularly Hainan Island. This study investigated two sediment cores (cores X1 and X2) collected from the continental shelf off Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea. Combined with geochemical compositions (Al, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb), Sr-Nd isotopes, grain size, and AMS 14C ages, our results showed that Cd and Cu in core X1 and Cd and Pb in core X2 have been mainly influenced by anthropogenic activities since ~4.0 kyr BP. The enrichment factors showed obvious increases starting at ~4.0 kyr BP and were in good accordance with the appearance of abundant archeological sites on Hainan Island. Significant climatic changes (i.e. decreases in the East Asian summer monsoon and increases in El Niño–Southern Oscillation activities) at ~4.0 kyr BP likely promoted more intense, localized human activities, which in turn enhanced heavy metal accumulation in the continental shelf sediments. These results provide new insights into the history of human activities on Hainan Island and indicate that the geochemical compositions of continental shelf sediments have the potential for broadening our knowledge of the human activities and cultural development in tropical areas. In the past decade, the 800 km elongated mud belt off Zhejiang-Fujian coast, East China Sea (ECS), has been extensively studied for understanding the source to sink processes on the East Asian continental margin in the context of the Asian monsoon. However, to better understand the sediment source and dispersal pattern, the existing mineralogical and geochemical data of adjacent river systems, including the Changjiang River (CJR) and local rivers in Zhejiang, Fujian and Taiwan, need to be systematically reviewed. Therefore, various indicators from published literatures for the provenance discrimination in the mud belt have been summarised in this article. The results show that high diversity of clay mineral assemblages in fluvial sediments being supplied into the mud belt, e.g., dominant illite and chlorite in the CJR, absence of smectite in Taiwan rivers, similar amounts of the four clay mineral species in Zhejiang rivers, and dominant kaolinite in Fujian rivers. On heavy mineralogy, the CJR is dominated by dolomite, hornblende, and flaky minerals; and among of them, dolomite is distinctive for the CJR. For geochemical approaches, elemental compositions, combined with strontium and neodymium isotopes, reflect strong provenance control. However, geochemical and mineralogical compositions are found to vary with grain size, and thus extra caution should be taken when using these parameters as provenance indicator to discriminate the marine sediments with variety of grain-size fractions. In addition, pyrrhotite, occurred in fluvial sediments from western Taiwan, has not been found in sediments derived from mainland China, indicating that magnetic parameters could be used to discriminate sediment provenance. The mud belt formed during sea-level highstand, when modern current system in the ECS has been established, resulting in sediments derived from the CJR have been transported southward since 8 ka. In addition, sediment provenances have not been constant since initiation of the mud belt in response to climatic and oceanographic changes during the Holocene, which has been documented by mineral and geochemical signals. Nevertheless significant studies have been carried out, to better understand the formation mechanism for the mud belt and its implications for environmental changes, further studies on sediment provenance throughout the Holocene, in situ observation, and sedimentation dynamical modelling are required. The influence of hydrodynamics on the chemical composition of sediments is based on the uneven distribution of element abundances in different size fractions. In this study, 72 size-fractional sediments from the Huanghe (Yellow River) and Changjiang (Yangtze River) riverbeds were measured with XRD, SEM, ICP-AES and ICP-MS. The analysis results show that the mineral and chemical characteristics change with grain size in the Huanghe and Changjiang sediments. According to the principal components analysis, three independent geochemical factors were found. The first factor elements, Zr, Hf, Th, U, Y, La and TiO2 are influenced by the existence of heavy minerals. The second factor elements, Al2O3, alkalis, alkaline earth (excluding Ca and Sr) and most of the transitional metals are dominated by clay minerals. The third factor group includes Ca and Sr, which were controlled by calcium-bearing mineral contents and chemical weathering intensities. The various grain size distributions greatly affect the mineralogical and chemical compositions of bulk sediments. Compared to other size fractions, the 5-6PHI size fractions of the Huanghe and Changjiang sediments have special mineralogical and chemical compositions, and intermediate volume percentages. Weight or volume percentage of each size fraction may be more suitable than mean grain-size of the bulk sediment to elucidate the grain size effects. Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) values increase steeply with decreasing grain size, while Weathering Index of Parker (WIP) values are relatively stable. Because of the big influence of the abundance of clay minerals on CIA values, it is questionable to use CIA as a proxy of weathering intensity. Considering the clay mineral effects, stability in values and heterogeneous material properties, WIP has the potential to indicate the chemical weathering intensity of sediments. To synthetically realize the character of major-element compositions as well as its significance for provenance and paleoenvironment recorded in core sediments of the West Philippine Sea over the last 700 ka, grain size and major elements of 221 bulk sediments, together with major-element compositions in the detrital phase of 16 typical samples, in core MD06-3047 collected from the Benham Rise were analyzed. Both discrimination plot and R-mode factor analysis indicate that vertical changes of major elements are mainly controlled by the sedimentation of nearby volcanic matter and the eolian dust input, whereas influences from marine biologic deposition and hydrothermal activity are minor. In particular, AlO and KO are representative of an eolian dust factor. The variation in the eolian dust factor score is characterized by the obviously glacial-interglacial periodicity and can be well compared with the paleotemperature record of the Antarctic ice core and the evolution of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) recorded in the Chinese loess sequence, and then offers a new proxy for the evolution history of eolian dust input into the study area that is controlled by the EAWM intensity and aridity in the continental source regions of atmospheric dust. Abstract: Surficial grain-size and down-core clay mineralogical data show that sediment along the inner-most part of the continental shelf in East China Sea is mainly derived from the Yangtze River (Changjiang), spanning from the Yangtze mouth (33°N) ~1000km southward to the southwestern corner of the Taiwan Strait (24°N). High-resolution CHIRP seismic profiles reveal an elongated mud wedge extending along the inner shelf, with a northern depocenter on the modern Yangtze delta and a southern depocenter at 27.5°N. Four distinct acoustic units are delineated within the mud wedge (from bottom up): unit I (late-Pleistocene, mainly valley fills), unit II (formed by transgressions, thin strata), unit III (11–2kyr BP, downlapping strata) and unit IV (2–0kyr BP, flat and opaque strata). Incised valleys, up to 15-m deep, are filled by flat-lying or inclined strata in unit I. The thin (<3m) and acoustically transparent unit II is only seen between 30 and 26°N in water depths between 40 and 90m. Separated by acoustically opaque strata or unconformities, units III and IV are widely distributed. During the past 11kyr Yangtze sediment accumulation has been unsteady, showing two high and one low accumulation-rate periods. The high-accumulation period at 5–8kyr BP may be related to maximum East Asian summer monsoon precipitation in the Yangtze basin; the other high-accumulation period, 0–2kyr BP, probably reflects intensive human activities in the river''s watershed. The low-accumulation-rate period at 2–5kyr BP, which is seen in both northern and southern Yangtze depocenters, is probably related to low river discharge and/or intensified Taiwan Warm Current and China Coastal Current. To decipher the sedimentary evolution and environmental changes since the late Last Deglaciation, two gravity cores were analyzed from the western North Yellow Sea (NYS). The two cores (B-L44 and B-U35) were sampled for grain size, clay minerals, detrital minerals, and C dating. They are comparable in lithofaies, and the observed succession was divided into four depositional units based on lithology and mineral assemblages, which recorded the postglacial transgression. Depositional unit 4 (DU 4) (before 11.5 ka) was characterized with enrichment in sand, and was interpreted as nearshore deposits in shallow water during the Younger Dryas Event. DU 3 (11.5-9.6 ka) displayed a fining-upward succession composed of sediments from local rivers, such as the Huanghe (Yellow) River, and from coastal erosion, which clearly were related to the Early Holocene transgression. Stable muddy deposition (DU 2) in NYS began to form at about 9.6 ka, which received direct supply of fine materials from the Shandong subaqueous clinoform. It is believed that the Yellow Sea circulation system played a major role in controlling the formation of fine sediment deposition in DU 1 (after 6.4 ka) after the sea level maximum. Abstract: Changes in paleoenvironments over the last 17,500yr have been documented by a high-resolution clay mineralogy and grain–size records of Core KNG5 from the northern slope of the South China Sea. Our results indicate that clay minerals are mainly from the Pearl River from 17,500 to12,500calyr BP, and the South China Sea modern current system began to form since 12,500calyr BP, as a result, Taiwan turns to be the major contributor of clay minerals after 12,500calyr BP. Two grain-size populations with high variability through time were identified in the 13–28μm and 1–2.2μm grain-size intervals. The 1–2.2μm grain-size population are mainly controlled by provenance supply and current transport. The 13–28μm grain-size fraction could be controlled mainly by the sea-level change. The 1–2.2μm grain-size population record demonstrates that East Asian Summer Monsoon intensity generally follows changes in insolation and that the response is similar for a large area of China and other northern low-latitude records, implying the globality of the monsoon evolution since Holocene. The East China Sea (ECS) is susceptible to summer typhoons, which play an important role in sediment transport and reworking on the continental shelf. However, because observations during typhoon passage are difficult to carry out even at present, the influence of typhoons on sedimentary records in the ECS is not fully understood. In this study, we compared the elemental compositions and grain-size distributions of surface sediments collected before and after the passage of Typhoon Talim. Through end-member modeling algorithm (EMMA) analysis, the variations in sediment composition due to the typhoon passage were characterized, and the impacts of typhoons on sediment migration, redistribution and sedimentary records on the ECS continental shelf were elucidated. Comparison of the results revealed that after the passage of Typhoon Talim, the clay distributions were generally parallel to the coastline, the sand contents in the northeast and southeast of the study area decreased, and the sorting coefficient decreased in the inner shelf mud area and increased in the relict sand area. The three-end-member model was capable of adequately reproducing all variables, and the three end members were interpreted to be the fine-grained components of river terrigenous sediments (EM1), mixed sediments (EM2), and relict sands (EM3) according to the grain-size and chemical element composition characteristics of surface sediments. Summer typhoons can interrupt the cross-shelf transport of fine-grained sediments caused by cross-shelf penetrating fronts (CPFs) and can promote exchange between fine-grained sediments and relict sands on the ECS continental shelf. Chemical weathering of shelf sediments is important in driving the global elemental cycle and climate to maintain the earth's habitability. However, the response mechanism between chemical weathering of shelf sediments and climate and sea-level changes is still unclear. This study focuses on core ECMZ located in the mud area of the East China Sea (ECS) inner shelf. The results indicate that the mechanisms controlling chemical weathering in the sediment of the ECS inner shelf differ at different timescales. On the orbital time scale, the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) indicates that the intensity of chemical weathering in sediments during the deglacial period was significantly higher than that during the Holocene. This was caused by shelf exposure during low sea-level periods when the sediments were fully exposed and the residence time in the weathering zone was long, leading the shelf sediments to undergo consistent and complete weathering under supply-limited conditions. In comparison, during cold events on the millennium-centennial time scale, such as Younger Dryas, 8.2 ka, and 4.2 ka, chemical weathering was weaker (lower CIA values) due to accelerated erosion as a result of lower temperatures and higher precipitation, which shortened the rocks' residence in the weathering zone, resulting in the control of chemical weathering shifted from supply factors to kinetic ones, such as temperature and precipitation. Our findings suggest that on the orbital time scale, glacial shelf exposure could enhance chemical weathering, thereby reducing atmospheric CO 2 ; on the millennium-centennial time scale, chemical weathering could rapidly respond to abrupt climate events. Sedimentary pyrite and the ratio between organic carbon and pyrite sulfur (C/S ratio) have been widely used as paleosalinity indicators to distinguish between marine and freshwater environments. However, in unsteady marine environments with strong physical reworking, the formation of pyrite is limited, leading to a high C/S ratio, as is the case in freshwater environments; thus, whether C/S ratios can identify unsteady marine environments in sedimentary strata is still a controversial topic. To calculate the availability of these classic indicators in unsteady environments, we analysed multiple indicators of core sediments obtained from the inner shelf of the East China Sea. Our results show that there are no pyrite aggregates in the sediments deposited under terrestrial conditions before 13.1 ka. During this period, the C/S ratios are higher than 2.8, representing the characteristics of sediment deposited in freshwater environments, which is also supported by low Sr/Ba ratios. When the core site was initially affected by seawater intrusion at approximately 13.1 ka, pyrite aggregates appeared for the first time, accompanied by a rapid decrease in C/S ratios, indicating a brackish tidal flat environment. We find that the C/S ratio overlaps between tidal flat and inner shelf environments, but the relatively high content of pyrite aggregates and fine-grained sediments in the shelf sediments can effectively separate these two environments. Our results further reveal that the mud depocentre initially developed at approximately 7.5 ka when the sea level reached its highstand. Changing sediment provenance and related paleoenvironmental evolution since marine isotope stages (MIS) 3 have been investigated based on accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of core CSDP-01, recovered from the western South Yellow Sea (SYS). Based on our results, sea level fluctuations and monsoonal climate variations are identified as the principal factors driving these changes. Sea level fluctuations determined the accommodation space in the shelf area, while the monsoonal climate controlled the sediment supply capacity from river to sea. Mineral and Sr Nd isotopic records reveal the major contribution of the paleo-Changjiang River (Yangtze River) to the study core area during the early-mid MIS 3, which likely defined the northern limit of the paleo-Changjiang delta at that time. High sediment supply and limited accommodation space led to the development of sediment-fed systems on the SYS shelf, resulting in a high preservation potential for thick-stacking and overlapping deltaic sediments. Along with deltaic progradation, core sediment provenance gradually transformed from the paleo-Changjiang River to the paleo-Huanghe River (Yellow River) near the late MIS 3, implying that the paleo-Huanghe River likely emptied into the SYS and built a large delta during the MIS 3 interval. A strong summer monsoon during the early MIS 1 interval was favorable for the Changjiang to deliver abundant sediments to the study core area. A weak summer monsoon during the mid-late MIS 1 when the coastline had retreated to nearly its present-day position decreased the Changjiang and Huanghe supply to the study area. Low sediment supply and sufficient accommodation space gave rise to the development of sediment-starved systems during this period. ɛNd values fluctuated between the Changjiang and Huanghe sources at that time, suggesting that sea bed erosion materials are the main sediment contribution to the study area. High resolution multi-proxy records, including geochemical and grain-size data from detrital sediments of IODP Site U1429 in the northern Okinawa Trough, provide reliable evidence for constraining sediment source and transport processes. They also allow silicate weathering and erosion controlled by sea-level change and East Asian summer monsoon evolution since 34 ka to be reconstructed. Provenance proxies indicated that sediments in the northern Okinawa Trough were mainly supplied by the Yellow River middle reach at ~ 34–8 ka. The low sea level and proximity of paleo-Yellow River mouth to the northern Okinawa Trough were the causes of the dominant Yellow River input. After ~ 8 ka, a retreated Yellow River mouth coupled with the blocking effect of the Kuroshio Current and its branches, together with strong East Asian summer monsoon precipitation resulted in relatively strong sediment input from Kyushu to the northern Okinawa Trough. Meanwhile, Yellow River upper reach supplied more sediments to the study site than that during the ~ 34–8 ka. On glacial-interglacial scale, silicate weathering proxies indicate that the core sediment was more weathered during the last glacial and deglacial than that in the modern Yellow River. We attribute this to the increased upper reach sediment input, which supplied more weak weathered sediment to the study site during the Holocene. Besides, composite effect of weathering during glacial and deglacial sediment production and additional weathering upon subaerial exposure of shelf deposits during low sea-level stage, as well as older weathered sediments reworking during sea-level rise could also account for this weathering regime. On multi-millennial scale, from ~ 34 to 18.5 ka, silicate weathering was mainly controlled by the East Asian summer monsoon, with a cooling and drying climate associated with weakened summer monsoon activity. This is consistent with the reduced alteration of sediments eroded from the Yellow River basin. From ~ 18.5 to 8 ka, strong reworking of older weathered sediments overwhelmed the East Asian summer monsoon in controlling silicate weathering, which induced a continuous increase in chemical alteration of the sediments during this period. The late Quaternary paleoceanography and paleoenvironment of the South China Sea (SCS) have been well reconstructed over the last decade. In contrast, the provenance of the terrigenous sediments that have accumulated in the northwestern continental shelf mud area remains enigmatic. This study investigated the provenance of these sediments and the paleoenvironmental changes archived in Core X2 via the analysis of geochemical elements, grain size, and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C ages. Based on the upper continental crust (UCC)-normalized REE patterns and REE fractionation parameters, southwestern and western Taiwanese rivers and the Pearl River were identified as the main sources of the fine-grained sediment deposited in the northwestern shelf mud area off Hainan Island. This finding further confirms the long-distance transport (> 1000 km) of fine-grained sediment from Taiwanese rivers to the northern SCS shelf and slope. Obvious changes in the grain size and Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) record occurred at approximately 4.0 cal kyr BP and were likely caused by increased Hainan Island inputs due to sea level changes. Atmospheric CO 2 and global climate are closely coupled. Since 800 ka CO 2 concentrations have been up to 50% higher during interglacial compared to glacial periods. Because of its dependence on temperature, humidity, and erosion rates, chemical weathering of exposed silicate minerals was suggested to have dampened these cyclic variations of atmospheric composition. Cooler and drier conditions and lower non-glacial erosion rates suppressed in situ chemical weathering rates during glacial periods. However, using systematic variations in major element geochemistry, Sr–Nd isotopes and clay mineral records from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1143 and 1144 in the South China Sea spanning the last 1.1 Ma, we show that sediment deposited during glacial periods was more weathered than sediment delivered during interglacials. We attribute this to subaerial exposure and weathering of unconsolidated shelf sediments during glacial sealevel lowstands. Our estimates suggest that enhanced silicate weathering of tropical shelf sediments exposed during glacial lowstands can account for ∼9% of the carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere during the glacial and thus represent a significant part of the observed glacial–interglacial variation of ∼80 ppmv. As a result, if similar magnitudes can be identified in other tropical shelf-slope systems, the effects of increased sediment exposure and subsequent silicate weathering during lowstands could have potentially enhanced the drawdown of atmospheric CO 2 during cold stages of the Quaternary. Clay mineralogical analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis were performed on deep-sea sediments cored on the Benham Rise (core MD06-3050) in order to reconstruct long-term evolution of East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) rainfall in the period since 2.36 Ma. Clay mineralogical variations are due to changes in the ratios of smectite, which derive from weathering of volcanic rocks in Luzon Island during intervals of intensive monsoon rainfall, and illite- and chlorite-rich dusts, which are transported from East Asia by winds associated with the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM). Since Luzon is the main source of smectite to the Benham Rise, long-term consistent variations in the smectite/(illite + chlorite) ratio in core MD06-3050 as well as ODP site 1146 in the Northern South China Sea suggest that minor contributions of eolian dust played a role in the variability of this mineralogical ratio and indicate strengthening EASM precipitation in SE Asia during time intervals from 2360 to 1900 kyr, 1200 to 600 kyr, and after 200 kyr. The EASM rainfall record displays a 30 kyr periodicity suggesting the influence of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). These intervals of rainfall intensification on Luzon Island are coeval with a reduction in precipitation over central China and an increase in zonal SST gradient in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, implying a reinforcement of La Niña-like conditions. In contrast, periods of reduced rainfall on Luzon Island are associated with higher precipitation in central China and a weakening zonal SST gradient in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, thereby suggesting the development of dominant El Niño-like conditions. Our study, therefore, highlights for the first time a long-term temporal and spatial co-evolution of monsoonal precipitation in East Asia and of the tropical Pacific ENSO system over the past 2.36 Ma. Abstract: Clay mineral assemblage of the core MD06-3047 in the western Philippine Sea has been used to trace sediment provenance and transport process and thus to constrain the East Asian monsoon evolution as well as its forcing mechanism over the past 700kyr. Clay minerals mainly consist of smectite (61%) and illite (23%), with minor chlorite (10%) and kaolinite (6%). Provenance analyses suggest that the smectite originates predominantly from the alteration of nearby Luzon volcanic rocks. Illite is primarily derived from the Asian continent with eolian origin. Illite contents show strong glacial/interglacial cyclicity as constrained by oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Variations of illite contents are ultimately controlled by the East Asian monsoon evolution, characterized by higher illite values during glacials with relatively stronger East Asian winter monsoon but weaker East Asian summer monsoon. During interglacials, enhanced East Asian summer monsoon and rainfall could produce more smectite with poor crystallinity from Luzon to the study core. Spectral analyses of illite content and smectite crystallinity display a strong periodicity at 100kyr for the East Asian winter monsoon and 100kyr, 30kyr, and 23kyr periodicities for the East Asian summer monsoon, respectively, suggesting the unique forcing processes of the East Asian winter monsoon from high-latitudes (i.e., ice volume) and the East Asian summer monsoon from both high-latitudes and low-latitudes (i.e., tropical Pacific). Abstract: The eolian component in Pacific Ocean sediments has been recognized as providing a direct link between the continental loess and marine δ 18O climate records over orbital timescales since 500ka. Here we extend this eolian record over the past one million years. We constructed high-resolution clay mineral stratigraphies based on δ 18O chronology in sediments from the International Marine Past Global Change (IMAGES) Core MD06-3050 from the West Philippine Sea in order to trace the sources of clay minerals and reconstruct proxy records of past changes in the Asian eolian input to the basin since 1.0Ma. The clay mineral assemblage in Core MD06-3050 mainly consists of smectite (~65%) and illite (~25%), with minor kaolinite (~5%) and chlorite (~5%). Provenance analysis suggests that smectite was derived mainly from the weathering of volcanic rocks on Luzon island, whereas illite, chlorite and kaolinite were mainly transported as eolian dust by the East Asian winter monsoon from central Asia. Illite/smectite values in Core MD06-3050 are generally higher and more variable during glacial periods and lower during interglacials, suggesting that higher eolian input to the West Philippine Sea generally co-varied with East Asian winter monsoon intensity and more aridity in continental Asia since 1.0Ma. Spectral analysis further reveals the close link between the extent of high-latitude glaciation, East Asian winter monsoon intensity and eolian input to the West Philippine Sea at eccentricity (100ka), obliquity (41ka) and precession (23ka) bands since 1.0Ma. Abstract: The Late Pliocene is thought to be characterized by the simultaneous intensification of both the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). However, the evolution of the EASM during the Pliocene remains still controversial and only little is known about the dynamics of the EASM during the Pliocene on orbital time scales. Here we use clay mineral assemblages in sediments from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1143 in the southern South China Sea (SCS) to obtain proxy records of past changes in the EASM climate during the Pliocene. Provenance analysis suggests that illite, chlorite and kaolinite originated mainly from the Mekong River drainage area. Smectite was derived mainly from the Indonesian islands. The kaolinite/illite ratio and the chemical index of alteration (CIA) of siliciclastic sediments allowed us to reconstruct the history of chemical weathering and physical erosion of the Mekong River drainage area and thus, the evolution of the EASM during the Pliocene. Our clay minerals proxy data suggests a stronger EASM during the Early Pliocene than during the Late Pliocene. We propose that the long-term evolution of the EASM has been driven by global cooling rather than the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. Spectral analysis of kaolinite/illite ratio displays a set of strong periodicities at 100ka, 30ka, 28ka, 25ka, and 22ka, with no clear obliquity-related signal. Our study suggests that the Pliocene EASM intensity on orbital time scales is not only controlled by the Northern Hemisphere summer insolation, but also strongly influenced by equatorial Pacific ENSO-like ocean–atmosphere dynamics.
