Working on an experimental dataset to derive descriptive parameters with well-known procedures appears to be a straightforward process. However, due to the complexity of environmental systems, the procedures cannot be completely defined, and commonly hypothesis are required to obtain final results. These degrees of freedom cause a spread in results that is often wider than the experimental uncertainties and that should be taken into account in the measurement accuracy estimation. As an example of this issue, the sources of uncertainty, including reproducibility, that occur in dating marine and lacustrine sediment cores with the 210Pb methodology are discussed in this paper. The IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP) "Study of Temporal Trends of Pollution in Selected Coastal Areas by the application of Isotopic and Nuclear Tools" promoted this discussion, its main objective being the determination of a streamlined, harmonised and validated methodology for marine sediment dating. The uncertainties estimated from experimental data and mathematical propagated must be complemented with reproducibility contribution: some elements are specific for the 210Pb method (mixed layer, finite thickness of layers and identification of the equilibrium depth), while others are more general (exponential fitting and data interpolation). The final spreading of results can be mainly controlled by reproducibility, and efforts are needed to standardise procedures to reduce the effect of reproducibility and to better estimate the overall uncertainty of measurements. Abstract: Environmental archives, such as sediments, banded corals and tree rings, are widely used to reconstruct past environmental conditions of ecosystems. In particular, 210Pb has been used during more than 4 decades, through dating of undisturbed sediment cores, to study ecosystem changes during the last 100yr. Since its inception, diverse dating models have been proposed, developed, used and validated in numerous environments, but their nomenclature and formulation is not homogenous. In this work we emphasize that conceptual models used to date undisturbed sediment cores can be deduced from a single fundamental equation, which relates excess 210Pb concentration in sediment, its flux to the sediment surface and mass accumulation rate. From this equation, models were consistently named based on the main hypothesis used and, using a unified and logical nomenclature, dating equations were derived in detail. We applied in detail most of the described models to a sediment core from Mexico and uncertainty expressions were also included. Finally, some recommendations to use the models are proposed. We believe that this work can facilitate the use of 210Pb as a tool to date sediment cores in a more homogeneous way. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A reference material designed for the determination of anthropogenic and natural radionuclides in sediment, IAEA-384 (Fangataufa Lagoon sediment), is described and the results of certification are presented. The material has been certified for 8 radionuclides (40K, 60Co, 155Eu, 230Th, 238U, 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Am). Information values are given for 12 radionuclides (90Sr, 137Cs, 210Pb (210Po), 226Ra, 228Ra, 232Th, 234U, 235U, 239Pu, 240Pu and 241Pu). Less reported radionuclides include 228Th, 236U, 239Np and 242Pu. The reference material may be used for quality management of radioanalytical laboratories engaged in the analysis of radionuclides in the environment, as well as for the development and validation of analytical methods and for training purposes. Laboratories from 14 countries (with different levels of expertise in radionuclide measurements and 210Pb dating) participated in an interlaboratory comparison exercise (ILC) related to the application of 210Pb sediment dating technique within the framework of the IAEA Coordinated Research Project. The laboratories were provided with samples from a composite sediment core and were required to provide massic activities of several radionuclides and an age versus depth model from the obtained results, using the most suitable 210Pb dating model. Massic concentrations of Zn and Cu were also determined to be used for chronology validation. The ILC results indicated good analytical performances while the dating results didn't demonstrate the same degree of competence in part due to the different experience in dating of the participant laboratories. The ILC exercise enabled evaluation of the difficulties faced by laboratories implementing 210Pb dating methods and identified some limitations in providing reliable chronologies. • Interlaboratory comparison exercise (ILC) finds difficulties of the Pb-210 method. • ILC results indicate good analytical performance of the participants. • ILC dating results did not show the same degree of confidence. The 210Pb sediment dating is the most widely used method to determine recent (~100–150 years) chronologies and sediment accumulation rates in aquatic environments and has been used effectively for reconstruction of diverse environmental processes associated with global change. Owing to the relative accessibility of the 210Pb methodology, many environmental chronologies have been produced, but not always critically assessed. Sometimes, sedimentary processes such as compaction, local mixing, erosion, or episodic sedimentation are not taken into account, nor the validity of the fundamental premises and proper estimation of uncertainties assessed. A Pb-210 dating interlaboratory comparison modelling exercise was designed within the framework of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Coordinated Research Project "Study of temporal trends of pollution in selected coastal areas by the application of isotopic and nuclear tools" (CRP K41016), to identify potential problems associated with the use of 210Pb dating models and to suggest best practices to obtain reliable reconstructions. The exercise involved 14 laboratories worldwide with different levels of expertise in the application of the 210Pb dating methods. The dating exercise was performed using 210Pb, 226Ra and 137Cs activity data from two sediment cores (coastal and lacustrine sediments), and the participants were requested to provide their 210Pb chronologies based on dating models. This modelling exercise evidenced the limitations and constraints of 210Pb method when supplementary and validation information is not available. The exercise highlighted the relevance of solid understanding of the fundamentals, assumptions and limitations of the 210Pb dating method and its validation, and allowed identifying key aspects to improve the reliability of 210Pb dating process, including: a critical examination and interpretation of the 210Pb activity depth profile; an appropriate selection of the 210Pb dating model according to the characteristics of the 210Pb activity profile and the environmental setting taking into account sediment compaction in the calculations; a sound identification of the 210Pb equilibrium depth and the estimation of the 210Pb inventory ensuring the best possible estimation of interpolated 210Pb values when needed; and the use of independent markers to corroborate the age models. • Potential constraints and limitations of the 210Pb dating method are evidenced. • The 210Pb dating method is far to be a straightforward tool for dating sediment cores. • Reliable 210Pb chronologies require a proper understanding of the dating methodology. Spatial and temporal variability of mercury concentrations in sediments was evaluated in 210Pb-dated sediment cores from offshore and intertidal areas in the southern Gulf of Mexico. In offshore cores, mercury concentrations were comparable (11.2–69.2 ng g−1), and intermediate between concentrations in intertidal cores from the eastern (6.0–34.4 ng g−1) and the western (34.9–137.7 ng g−1) inlets of Términos Lagoon. The enrichment factor (EF) indicated minimal contamination (EF < 2) in most offshore cores, whereas in some intertidal cores steadily increasing mercury enrichment and fluxes were observed along the past century. No evidence of oil industry related mercury contamination was found, as the minor but increasing enrichment in intertidal cores is most likely related to land-derived sources such as catchment eroded soils and waste water runoff. Results highlight the importance to control catchment erosion and untreated sewage releases to reduce mercury loadings to the coastal zone. Coastal vegetated habitats can be important sinks of organic carbon (C org ) and mitigate global warming by sequestering significant quantities of atmospheric CO 2 and storing sedimentary C org for long periods, although their C org burial and storage capacity may be affected by on-going sea level rise and human intervention. Geochemical data from published 210 Pb-dated sediment cores, collected from low-energy microtidal coastal wetlands in El Salvador (Jiquilisco Bay) and in Mexico (Salada Lagoon; Estero de Urias Lagoon; Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve) were revisited to assess temporal changes (within the last 100 years) of C org concentrations, storage and burial rates in tropical salt marshes under the influence of sea level rise and contrasting anthropization degree. Grain size distribution was used to identify hydrodynamic changes, and δ 13 C to distinguish terrigenous sediments from those accumulated under the influence of marine transgression. Although the accretion rate ranges in all sediment records were comparable, C org concentrations (0.2–30%), stocks (30–465 Mg ha −1 , by extrapolation to 1 m depth), and burial rates (3–378 g m −2 year −1 ) varied widely within and among the study areas. However, in most sites sea level rise decreased C org concentrations and stocks in sediments, but increased C org burial rates. Lower C org concentrations were attributed to the input of reworked marine particles, which contribute with a lower amount of C org than terrigenous sediments; whereas higher C org burial rates were driven by higher mass accumulation rates, influenced by increased flooding and human interventions in the surroundings. C org accumulation and long-term preservation in tropical salt marshes can be as high as in mangrove or temperate salt marsh areas and, besides the reduction of C org stocks by ongoing sea level rise, the disturbance of the long-term buried C org inventories might cause high CO 2 releases, for which they must be protected as a part of climate change mitigation efforts. Mangrove sediments are valuable records to reconstruct the impacts of human-induced changes on the coastal zone. Seven lead-210 dated sediment cores were used to evaluate temporal trends of sedimentation rates over the past century in Mexican mangrove areas at Términos Lagoon (TL; southern Gulf of Mexico) and El Verde Camacho Lagoon (EV; northern Mexican Pacific coast). We hypothesized that the contrasting characteristics (e.g., meteorological, demographic, and land-use change) would lead to significant differences in sedimentation rates between the study sites. Sediment accumulation rates (SAR) in both sites (TL 0.03–2.1 cm yr−1; EV 0.04–4 cm yr−1) were comparable to the global SAR range for mangrove forests. Mass accumulation rates (MAR) in the TL cores (0.03–0.47 g cm−2 yr−1) were consistent with previous studies of the region. Excluding conspicuous MAR maxima, attributed to meteorological events, MAR values in the EV cores (0.04–0.9 g cm−2 yr−1) were higher than in other mangrove areas of the Mexican Pacific coast, but comparable to other sites in the world. Similar exponentially increasing MAR values towards present in both sites were attributed to general factors driving sediment accumulation in mangroves, mainly continental erosion promoted by land-use changes, which has accelerated since the 1950s, associated with (i) population growth and the consequent expansion of human activities and (ii) sea-level rise, similar in the studied regions and from which mangrove ecosystems seem to adapt. Intensifying population growth and land-use change are already reducing the extent of mangrove coverage in some parts of the study areas. Adaptation to an accelerating sea-level rise depends on maintaining conditions that allow mangroves to accrete vertically. However, both global change pressures may pose future threats to these ecosystems. Abstract: The measurement of plutonium isotopes, 239Pu and 240Pu, at 670kV on the compact accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system at the Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA) in Seville, Spain, is now a reality. In this work, we present first Pu AMS results for environmental samples: a sediment core collected in a submarine canyon in the Mediterranean coast of the Spanish region of Palomares, affected by a nuclear accident in 1966. From the study of the 240Pu/239Pu atomic ratio profile, showing on average levels lower than 11%, we confirm that the weapon-grade plutonium released on land during the accident, with a characteristic 240Pu/239Pu atomic ratio of 5.8%, has found its way into the marine environment. A two-plutonium sources mixture model (Palomares and fallout) is used to elucidate the percentage of the plutonium coming from the accident. As a validation exercise of the Pu AMS measuring technique and in order to obtain the 238Pu/(239+240)Pu activity ratios, samples were also studied by alpha-spectrometry (AS). The obtained AS 239+240Pu activity concentration results fit in with the AMS ones in a wide dynamic range, thus validating the AMS technique. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Artificial radionuclides enter the Mediterranean Sea mainly through atmospheric deposition following nuclear weapons tests and the Chernobyl accident, but also through the river discharge of nuclear facility effluents. Previous studies of artificial radionuclides impact of the Mediterranean Sea have focussed on shallow, coastal sediments. However, deep sea sediments have the potential to store and accumulate pollutants, including artificial radionuclides. Deep sea marine sediment cores were collected from Mediterranean Sea abyssal plains (depth >2000 m) and analysed for 239,240Pu and 137Cs to elucidate the concentrations, inventories and sources of these radionuclides in the deepest areas of the Mediterranean. The activity — depth profiles of 210Pb, together with 14C dating, indicate that sediment mixing redistributes the artificial radionuclides within the first 2.5 cm of the sedimentary column. The excess 210Pb inventory was used to normalize 239,240Pu and 137Cs inventories for variable sediment fluxes. The 239,240Pu/210Pb xs ratio was uniform across the entire sea, with a mean value of 1.24×10−3, indicating homogeneous fallout of 239,240Pu. The 137Cs/210Pb xs ratio showed differences between the eastern (0.049) and western basins (0.030), clearly significant impact of deep sea sediments from the Chernobyl accident. The inventory ratios of 239,240Pu/137Cs were 0.041 and 0.025 in the western and eastern basins respectively, greater than the fallout ratio, 0.021, showing more efficient scavenging of 239,240Pu in the water column and major sedimentation of 137Cs in the eastern basin. Although areas with water depths of >2000 m constitute around 40% of the entire Mediterranean basin, the sediments in these regions only contained 2.7% of the 239,240Pu and 0.95% of the 137Cs deposited across the Sea in 2000. These data show that the accumulation of artificial radionuclides in deep Mediterranean environments is much lower than predicted by other studies from the analysis of continental shelf sediments. As part of the FRUELA experiment, 11 sediment cores were recovered from the Bellingshausen Sea, the western Bransfield and Gerlache Straits (Antarctic Peninsula) to determine the spatial distribution of organic carbon (OC), biogenic silica (BSi), and nitrogen (N) in the sediment under regions of known irregular primary production rates (PPRs).OC, BSi, and N contents ranged from 0.3% to 1.2%, from 5.7% to 20.4%, and from 0.03% to 0.17%, respectively. Apparent mean sediment accumulation rates (SARs) varied between 0.25 and 3.11 mm year-1 (220 and 1750 g m-2 year-1). Central Gerlache and western Bransfield Straits (the Orleans Canyon) had the highest biogenic constituents contents and sediment accumulation rates, whereas the northern coast off Snow Island (Bellingshausen Sea) showed the lowest values.Central Gerlache Strait, with the highest primary production rates in the study area, was the only region where the OC and BSi contents in the sediment corresponded to the photosynthetic activity in the euphotic zone above it. At the extremes of Gerlache Strait as in western Bransfield Strait, sediment focusing by currents enhanced by depressions in the sea floor contributed to develop regions with high biogenic constituent concentrations, whereas at the Bellingshausen Sea and western Gerlache Strait, winnowing by currents may drift away the biogenic material exported from the euphotic zone. Apparently, bottom relief and currents rather than solely depth determined the modern distribution and accumulation rates of biogenic particulate matter in the study area. Paleoceanographic interpretations of the sedimentary record from Antarctic marginal seas, such as Gerlache and Bransfield Straits, should consider that focusing due to lateral transport and sea floor morphology and the preferential degradation of OC relative to BSi may increase to an important degree the biogenic contents in the sediment, especially the opal. OC and BSi accumulation in Antarctic marginal seas could be as important as the broad continental shelves despite large spatial differences. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Ixtoc-1 oil spill (1979–80) released 475 million liters of petroleum into the Southern Gulf of Mexico (sGoM) likely causing Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation and Flocculent Accumulation (MOSSFA) to occur. A multiproxy approach including short-lived radioisotopes (210Pb xs), benthic foraminifera stable isotopes (δ13C CaCO3), and volcanic sediment grains was used to investigate regional events (e.g. oil spills and volcanic eruptions) recorded in sedimentary records. Depleted δ13C CaCO3 from 1979 to 80 outside of natural variability most likely results from petrogenic carbon deposition 100–250 km west of Ixtoc-1, possibly associated with MOSSFA. An event, characterized by increased volcanic input, depleted δ13C CaCO3 , and increased mass accumulation rates was consistent with the El Chichón eruption (1982) 80–100 km north of Ixtoc-1. Many factors confound the uniform distribution and preservation of these events in the sGoM.
