Cell adhesion acts as a complex process that is hardly promoted through surfaces with a single performance. Controlling the cell's adhesion on the interfaces between the synthetic materials and the biological environments remains a real challenge in the biomedical fields. Herein, based on RGD peptide modified carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS‐R) and dopamine modified oxidized alginate (OALG‐D), a layer‐by‐layer (LbL) self‐assemble multilayered (CCS‐R/OALG‐D)15 film is developed. The multifunctional (CCS‐R/OALG‐D)15 film with a self‐healing, highly adherent, biocompatible, and antioxidative biomatrix property for the cell adhesion is fabricated with the Schiff‐base bond, electrovalent bond, and hydrogen bond. The LbL multilayered film exhibits the significant cell adhesion ability for the normal human dermal fibroblast cells and the coral Acropopa formosa cells. Furthermore, it holds high self‐healing efficiency (88.8%), excellent adhesion strength (adhesive stress: 61.1 MPa), and outstanding antioxidation (free radical scavenging rate: 86.8%). Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the LbL multifunctional film, as a culture matrix, has prolonged the survival of the coral Acropopa formosa. Therefore, the incorporation of a self‐healing, high adhesion, superior cell adhesion, and antioxidation property into a single LbL self‐assembly film provides a promising platform for regenerative medicine. Abstract: Healable films with structural color are highly desirable and have a variety of potential applications. However, combining structural color with self‐healing properties to obtain new functional materials is a big challenge in current research. Herein, we present the first example of a color tunable, ultrathin film that can self‐heal in response to external mechanical abrasion. It is designed based on intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction; the synthetic strategy involves spin‐coating of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and chitosan (CS). Preparing stable coatings on alloy substrate has generated considerable interest because of their wide applications in biosensors, electronics and mechanical components. Here we report a promising strategy for fabricating the coatings on alloy substrates based on layer-by-layer self-assembly (LBL) technique. The strategy provides a convenient approach to achieve coating on alloy substrate by employing hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2), chitosan (CS), and dialdehyde starch (DAS). Scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), metallographic microscope were used to characterize the coated substrates. The resulting coating has good cellular compatibility and is used to promote coral cell adhesion. Inspired by the self-healing ability of plants, we have developed a new form of reversible thermochromic colorful film that can self-heal damages and color under the water stimulation, even with a thickness about hundreds of nanometers. Chitosan (CS) and poly (ethylene glycol) functionalized with the dialdehyde groups (DF-PEG) are employed as the components to fabricate the ultrathin colorful self-healing film via spin-coating method. The performance and mechanism of the self-healing property have been studied in this work. Moreover, a sensory array is built by utilizing the optical property of ultrathin colorful self-healing film. According to their reflective responses, the sensory array is capable of discriminating various kinds of divalent metal ions. Self-healing, antibacterial and metal-ion sensing coatings with nanoparticles were developed using layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique via host-guest interaction. The coatings consist of MoS 2 nanosheets, beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-modified poly (ethylenimine) (PEI) and adamantane (AD)-modified poly (acrylic acid) (PAA). Damages to conventional coatings results in cracking and affects the coatings’ ability to maintain antibacterial and sensing qualities. The prepared MoS 2 /β-CD-PEI/AD-PAA self-healing coatings are not only able to greatly suppress bacterial adhesion and have excellent antibacterial property, particularly under UV light irradiation, but also have a longtime service time. Moreover, the self-healing coatings first applied the fluorescence quenching for detecting heavy metals (Co 2+ ). Fluorescence spectra demonstrated that a linear relationship existed between the fluorescence intensity and the Co 2+ concentration with 0 ∼ 0.1 ug/mL and the detection limit of Co 2+ is 0.018 mg/mL. Fresh-cut apples are more perishable than the intact ones because they may suffer more attacks from the outside. In this work, polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) edible coating was fabricated by carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) and chitosan (CS) through layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic deposition method. The coating was characterized and found that PEM coating was smooth, transparent, had a clear stratified structure and exhibited a linear deposition behavior. Moreover, PEM coating had self-healing ability and the self-healing efficiency reached to 87.4%. The PEM coating was applied on fresh-cut apples to evaluate its preservation effect. PEM coating was good at weight loss inhibition, firmness maintaining and anti-browning. These findings indicated that the PEM coating could be used in fresh-keeping field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ideally, if the corrosion resistance coating on carbon paper (CP) can be endowed with the self-healing property, the service life and the reliability of the carbon paper will be greatly increased as the gas diffusion layer. In this paper, different cycles of s branched poly (ethyleneimine) (bPEI) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) were modified on the surface of the carbon paper via layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technology. The prepared polyelectrolyte multilayered coatings can not only protect the carbon fiber from corrosion, but also take advantages of the surrounding water to quickly repair themselves after damaged. The effects of the assembly cycles on morphology, resistance, air permeability and the contact angle of carbon papers were investigated, then the differences of the carbon papers in electrolysis process were explored. The results reveal that all the prepared coatings can protect carbon papers from corrosion, while when the assembly cycles was 10, the coatings are most efficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mimicking the nature to confer synthetic materials with self-healing property in order to expand their lifespan is highly desirable and has attracted much more attention from the scientific community. But poor electrochemical property of the fabricated self-healing materials limit the current and future application. Here, self-healing multilayer polyelectrolyte film based on branched poly(ethyleneimine) (bPEI), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and graphene(GE) (bPEI/(PAA-GE)) was prepared by layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. The bPEI/(PAA-GE) self-healing multilayer polyelectrolyte film not only shows excellent self-healing ability at high humidity, but also possesses good electrical conductivity. Now that the sparking organ-on-a-chip into the spotlight, as an available material with biological functions and the scalable properties, has been put forward for precision medical and regenerative medicine. Herein, to control cell fate, we developed a facile organoid chip composed of the adhesive film prepared via layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly and the super-lubricating film polymerized under ultraviolet light. It has been successfully demonstrated that the chip gets capable of cellular releasing after capture and sustaining high cell viability, as well as cell sorting. The organoid chip is also endowed with self-healing and antioxidative ability. • Edible coating fabricated with SA and menthol-CD-g-CS extended fruit storage time. • Guest–host interaction endowed the coating with releasable performance. • A coating with self-healing property can prolong shelf life. • Addition of l-menthol improves the mechanical properties of the coating. Edible self-healing coatings based on sodium alginate (SA) and l- menthol-beta-cyclodextrin-graft-chitosan were developed to improve the post-harvest quality and prolong the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. These coatings, which were developed based on a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, were characterized. Their mechanical properties and morphological studies indicated that the addition of l-menthol resulted in a transparent, smooth, and dense coating with better mechanical features and self-healing properties. The self-healing efficiency of coatings containing l-menthol was 59.49%, which was approximately 13.18 % higher than the control ones. In addition, the coatings realized a controlled liberation property owing to the liberation of l-menthol incorporated in β-cyclodextrin. The coatings effectively retained fruit firmness and reduced the weight loss of coated apples throughout a 30 d storage.
