The clear understanding of exchange interactions between magnetic ions in substituted BiFeO3 is the prerequisite for the comprehensive studies on magnetic properties. BiFe0.5Mn0.5O3 films and BiFeO3/BiMnO3 superlattices have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition on (001) SrTiO3 substrates. Using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), the ferroelectricity at room temperature has been inferred from the observation of PFM hysteresis loops and electrical writing of ferroelectric domains for both samples. Spin glass behavior has been observed in both samples by temperature dependent magnetization curves and decay of thermo-remnant magnetization with time. The magnetic ordering has been studied by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, and Fe-O-Mn interaction has been confirmed to be antiferromagnetic (AF). The observed spin glass in BiFe0.5Mn0.5O3 films has been attributed to cluster spin glass due to Mn-rich ferromagnetic (FM) clusters in AF matrix, while spin glass in BiFeO3/BiMnO3 superlattices is due to competition between AF Fe-O-Fe, AF Fe-O-Mn and FM Mn-O-Mn interactions in the well ordered square lattice with two Fe ions in BiFeO3 layer and two Mn ions in BiMnO3 layer at interfaces. The effect of sulfur vapor pressure in preparing the FeS2 films has been discussed and some incongruous views about sulfur pressure have been clarified in this paper based on experimental results and theoretical analysis. It is shown that lower sulfur pressures than the saturation value only result in poorer crystallization and worse performances, and in other words the FeS2 films could be optimized through improving the sulfur pressure till the saturation point. However for a certain temperature the sulfur pressure is limited by its saturated vapor pressure, and further increase of the sulfur quantity reacted with Fe films has little influence on the structure and properties of the pyrite films. Branching structures in nanometer level are of great importance in developing nanoscale science and functional electrical devices. In this letter, multidimensional magnesium oxide structures with cone-shaped branching have been mass-produced using a simple chemical vapor deposition method. The dominant structures in the product include two-dimensional ‘+’, ‘T’, or ‘Γ’ assemblies, and three-dimensional complex configurations. The results presented here enrich the nanoscale community with new basic materials for the fabrication of functional electrical and chemical sensing devices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) was conducted to study microstructure defects in pyrite FeS2 films deposited on glass and Si substrates. PAS provides unique information that the main defects existing in pyrite films sulfurized at 300°C are sulfur vacancies, and pyrite films with better crystallization are obtained when sulfurized at 400°C as a consequence of the reduction of the number of sulfur vacancies present in the films. On increasing the sulfurizing temperature higher than 400°C, the obvious 3γ decay shows that much nanoscale pores must appear in the films, which might worsen the performance of the pyrite films. Also our research indicates that a thin transition layer might be formed in the interface region resulted from the epitaxial growth and thermal diffusion for pyrite films deposited on Si substrates.
