At interfaces between complex oxides it is possible to generate electronic systems with unusual electronic properties, which are not present in the isolated oxides. One important example is the appearance of superconductivity at the interface between insulating oxides, although, until now, with very low Tc. We report the occurrence of high Tc superconductivity in the bilayer CaCuO2/SrTiO3, where both the constituent oxides are insulating. In order to obtain a superconducting state, the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface must be realized between the Ca plane of CaCuO2 and the TiO2 plane of SrTiO3. Only in this case extra oxygen ions can be incorporated in the interface Ca plane, acting as apical oxygen for Cu and providing holes to the CuO2 planes. A detailed hole doping spatial profile has been obtained by STEM/EELS at the O K-edge, clearly showing that the (super)conductivity is confined to about 1-2 CaCuO2 unit cells close to the interface with SrTiO3. The results obtained for the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface can be extended to multilayered high Tc cuprates, contributing to explain the dependence of Tc on the number of CuO2 planes in these systems., 14 pages, 4 figures

The optical response of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ has been studied in the 0.7-4 THz range on films with very low impurity level. The effect of the high-energy $\sigma$-gap is observed in the ratio $R_S/R_N$ between the normal and superconducting state reflectance, while in a neutron irradiated film with a slightly higher impurity level mainly the effect of the $\pi$-gap is evident as reported in previous experiments. At terahertz frequencies, the electrodynamic of MgB$_2$ can be well described by the two-band parallel conductivity model and is dominated by the $\pi$-bands when the impurity level is only slightly higher than that of an ultra-clean sample., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report temperature- and magnetic field-dependent bulk muon spin rotation measurements in a c-axis oriented superconductor CaC6 in the mixed state. Using both a simple second moment analysis and the more precise analytical Ginzburg-Landau model, we obtained a field independent in-plane magnetic penetration depth {\lambda}ab (0) = 72(3) nm. The temperature dependencies of the normalized muon spin relaxation rate and of the normalized superfluid density result to be identical, and both are well represented by the clean limit BCS model with 2\Delta/kB Tc = 3.6(1), suggesting that CaC6 is a fully gapped BCS superconductor in the clean limit regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRB

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth lambda(ab) in the infinite-layer electron-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 by means of muon-spin rotation. The observed temperature and magnetic field dependences of lambda(ab) are consistent with the presence of a substantial s-wave component in the superconducting order parameter, in good agreement with the results of tunneling, specific heat, and small-angle neutron scattering experiments.

We report on Raman measurements carried out on Ca2FeMoO6 and Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites as functions of pressure (0-15 GPa) and of temperature (298-370 K). The Raman spectrum of both the samples is characterized by a phonon peak at similar to 460 cm(-1) whose large asymmetric profile is ascribed to a Fano resonance. The careful data analysis provides in particular the Fano asymmetry parameter q which results to be nearly independent from pressure and temperature, thus suggesting a remarkable stability of both charge-carrier density and charge-lattice coupling. Finally, our data allow us to ascribe the conductivity transition previously observed around 2 GPa in Sr2FeMoO6 not to an intrinsic property but to the pressure-induced opening of intergrain percolation paths.

The electrodynamics near the metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) induced, in V3O5 single crystals, by both temperature (T) and pressure (P) has been studied by infrared spectroscopy. The T- and P-dependence of the optical conductivity may be explained within a polaronic scenario. The insulating phase at ambient T and P corresponds to strongly localized small polarons. Meanwhile the T-induced metallic phase at ambient pressure is related to a liquid of polarons showing incoherent dc transport, in the P-induced metallic phase at room T strongly localized polarons coexist with partially delocalized ones. The electronic spectral weight is almost recovered, in both the T and P induced metallization processes, on an energy scale of 1 eV, thus supporting the key-role of electron-lattice interaction in the V3O5 metal-to-insulator transition., 7 pages, 5 figures

We prepared a series of Mg_{1-x}(AlLi)_{x}B_2 samples with 0≤x≤0.45 in order to compensate with Li the electron doping induced by Al. Structural characterization by means of neutron and X-ray diffraction confirms that Li enters the MgB2 structure even though in an amount less than nominal one. We performed susceptibility, resistivity and specific heat measurements. Vibrational properties were also investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. We compare these results with those obtained on a homologous series of Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_2 samples. In high Tc superconductors the magnetic and electronic properties are determined by the probability that valence electrons virtually jump from site to site in the CuO2 planes, a mechanism opposed by on-site Coulomb repulsion and favored by hopping integrals. The spatial extent of the latter is related to transport properties, including superconductivity, and to the dispersion relation of spin excitations (magnons). Here, for three antiferromagnetic parent compounds (single-layer Bi2Sr0.99La1.1CuO6+delta, double-layer Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3O6 and infinite-layer CaCuO2) differing by the number of apical atoms, we compare the magnetic spectra measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering over a significant portion of the reciprocal space and with unprecedented accuracy. We observe that the absence of apical oxygens increases the in-plane hopping range and, in CaCuO2, it leads to a genuine 3D exchange-bond network. These results establish a corresponding relation between the exchange interactions and the crystal structure, and provide fresh insight into the materials dependence of the superconducting transition temperature., 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table, 42 references

We measured high resolution Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of the undoped cuprates La$_2$CuO$_4$, Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, CaCuO$_2$ and NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$. The dominant spectral features were assigned to $dd$ excitations and we extensively studied their polarization and scattering geometry dependence. In a pure ionic picture, we calculated the theoretical cross sections for those excitations and used them to fit the experimental data with excellent agreement. By doing so, we were able to determine the energy and symmetry of Cu-3$d$ states for the four systems with unprecedented accuracy and confidence. The values of the effective parameters could be obtained for the single ion crystal field model but not for a simple two-dimensional cluster model. The firm experimental assessment of $dd$ excitation energies carries important consequences for the physics of high $T_c$ superconductors. On one hand, having found that the minimum energy of orbital excitation is always $\geq 1.4$ eV, i.e., well above the mid-infrared spectral range, leaves to magnetic excitations (up to 300 meV) a major role in Cooper pairing in cuprates. On the other hand, it has become possible to study quantitatively the effective influence of $dd$ excitations on the superconducting gap in cuprates., 22 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

Raman and combined trasmission and reflectivity mid infrared measurements have been carried out on monoclinic VO$_2$ at room temperature over the 0-19 GPa and 0-14 GPa pressure ranges, respectively. The pressure dependence obtained for both lattice dynamics and optical gap shows a remarkable stability of the system up to P*$\sim$10 GPa. Evidence of subtle modifications of V ion arrangements within the monoclinic lattice together with the onset of a metallization process via band gap filling are observed for P$>$P*. Differently from ambient pressure, where the VO$_2$ metal phase is found only in conjunction with the rutile structure above 340 K, a new room temperature metallic phase coupled to a monoclinic structure appears accessible in the high pressure regime, thus opening to new important queries on the physics of VO$_2$., 5 pages, 3 figures
