ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the sexual behavior and accommodation characteristics of buffalo recipients patented for semen collection with an artificial vagina. Thirty bulls were sampled during favorable (March to May) and unfavorable (November to December) breeding seasons in a property located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil (Latitude 20°41'45'' South and Longitude 44°49'37'' West). Data were analyzed descriptively according to whether ejaculation was successful, using a range of behavioral parameters. A multilevel logistic regression analysis was performed using the responses and explanatory variables mentioned above. The results show that when more than three parameters are manifested, the chance of obtaining ejaculation increases by 9.0%, a value that rises to 28.2% when seven to nine parameters manifested by the breeders are observed. These observations allow us to conclude that it is possible to condition sexually mature bulls for semen collection through the artificial vagina for use in artificial insemination and fixed-time artificial insemination programs.

ABSTRACT Due to the supposed involvement of minerals in cases of ruminant periodontitis, this study aimed to analyze the concentrations of phosphorus (P) in bone, and cobalt (Co), copper (Co), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) in liver of a cohort of sheep affected or not by periodontitis. From an outbreak of the disease in 2011 in Pará state, Brazil, rib and liver samples were obtained from 22 sheep with periodontitis and seven samples from healthy animals. Based on the concentrations of the different minerals in the tissues, we concluded that there was no relationship between periodontal disease in sheep with any mineral deficiency status. In contrast, most of the minerals in the tissues were above or within the recommended concentrations in bone and liver. Within the various aspects which until now have been studied regarding periodontitis in ruminants, the results obtained here corroborate the fact that periodontal disease in sheep is an infectious disease and it is not a consequence of the deficiency or excess of mineral elements in the diet.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the treatment of copper deficiency, by parenteral route, in buffalo calves raised on the Marajó Island (PA). Fourteen animals were divided into two groups. Group 1 received three doses of 120 mg of copper glycinate (20mgCu/mL), intramuscularly, on days 1, 45 and 90; in the group 2 (control) the animals were Not supplemented with copper. In both groups liver biopsies were performed on days 1 and 135. The diagnosis of copper deficiency was established through history, clinical signs, and by the analysis of hepatic copper content. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to compare the reproductive efficiency of dairy buffaloes undergoing fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols based on progesterone/estrogen (P4/E2) and eCG during unfavorable breeding season using cooled (CS) and frozen semen (FS). A total of 446 buffaloes (> 40 days postpartum) were randomly distributed into four blocks (years): B1-2014 (n = 143), B2-2015 (n = 34), B3-2016 (n = 90), and B4-2017 (n = 179). Each block was subdivided into two (AI with CS and FS using the same ejaculate of each bull). Thus, the block subdivision was as follows: B1 (CS = 71 and FS = 72); B2 (CS = 18 and FS = 16); B3 (CS = 47 and FS = 43); and B4 (CS = 90 and FS = 89). The ejaculates of eight Murrah bulls collected using an artificial vagina were divided into two aliquots: one aliquot was diluted in Botu-Bov® commercial extender and cooled (BB-CS), and the other was diluted in the same extender and frozen (BB-FS). BB-CS aliquots were cooled at 5 °C/24 h using a refrigerator. BB-FS group aliquots were also cooled, and after equilibrating at 5 °C for 4 h, were placed in a 21-L Styrofoam box, 5 cm above the surface of liquid nitrogen. In the afternoon (A) on D0 (2:00 p.m.) the animals received EB 2.0 mg IM (Estrogin®) and an ear implant (CRESTAR® 3.0 mg P4). At D9 (A), the implant was removed, and the animals received eCG 400 IU IM (Folligon® 5000) + Cloprostenol PGF2α 0.530 mg IM (Sincrocio®). At D10 (A), the animals received EB 1.0 mg IM (Estrogin®), and at D12 (8:00 a.m.), AI was performed. At D42, pregnancy was diagnosed via ultrasonography. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi analisar o efeito da radiação vermelha de baixa intensidade sobre alguns parâmetros cinéticos do espermatozoide canino criopreservado. Ejaculados de oito cães adultos foram centrifugados, rediluídos em meio tris-gema de ovo com 6% de glicerol, e, posteriormente, fracionados em: T1: incidência de radiação vermelha (660 NM) (Fisioled - Mmoptics - 100mW) por 60 segundos, antes do resfriamento e após a descongelação; T2: incidência somente antes do resfriamento; T3: incidência somente após a descongelação; e T4: sem incidência. Após a descongelação, as amostras foram submetidas ao TTR utilizando-se Sperm Class Analyzer(r). No TTR0, TTR60 e TTR90, não houve diferença entre as variáveis analisadas pelo CASA. Somente no TTR30 os efeitos da incidência da radiação vermelha foram evidentes e significativos em T1 e T2; T1 resultou em baixa MT (12,5 + 10,6%) e T2 determinou o melhor resultado de MT 40,3 + 26,1%. De forma similar T1 apresentou maior número de espermatozoides estáticos (77,5±28,9%) em relação ao T2 (50,6±28%). Concluiu-se que a dupla incidência de radiação vermelha de baixa intensidade antes do resfriamento e após a descongelação teve efeito deletério sobre a motilidade do espermatozoide canino, expressa principalmente aos 30 minutos após descongelação.

ABSTRACT This study investigated in vitro the efficacy of four different extenders (TES-TRIS and TRIS with LDL low-density lipoprotein at concentrations of 10 or 5%) on the longevity of buffalo sperm in the refrigeration process at 5ºC. Sperm motility was assessed every 24 hours up to 72 hours of incubation using computer assisted sperm analysis and sperm membrane integrity was examined by the hypoosmotic test (HOST) at T1, T24, T48 and T72 hours. Eleven buffaloes (1 ejaculate per buffalo) of the Murrah breed were used, ranging in age from 4 to 5 years. Immediately after collection, each ejaculate was fractionated into 4 aliquots, and each aliquot was diluted in one of four diluents to obtain 50x106SPTZ/mL. The samples were packed in 0.5mL straws and refrigerated (-0.25°C/min) to 5°C and maintained at this temperature until evaluation. Prior to evaluation the samples were heated at 37°C for 30 seconds.
