Découverte en 2004 à l’occasion des fouilles archéologiques préventives entreprises à Naples pour la construction de la station du métro de Piazza Municipio, l’épave Napoli A a fait l’objet d’une étude détaillée mêlant les analyses architecturale, xylologique, dendrochronologique et radiocarbone, permettant in fine la restitution des structures et des formes d’origine. Au terme de ces analyses, il apparaît que ce petit navire de commerce, construit localement, a subi de nombreuses réparations lors de sa longue existence. Avant d’être abandonné près d’une jetée du port à la fin du ier siècle, ce voilier fut probablement utilisé dans une zone bien définie de la Méditerranée occidentale, à savoir la partie centrale et orientale de la mer Tyrrhénienne. The Napoli A wreck was discovered in 2004 during salvage excavations in Naples for the construction of the Piazza Municipio metro station. It was the subject of a detailed study combining architectural, xylological, radiocarbon and dendrochronological analyses that ultimately led to the reconstruction of the structure and form of the original ship. Thanks to these analyses, it appears that this small trading vessel, built locally, was repaired several times during its long existence. Before being abandoned near a pier at the end of the 1st century, this sailing ship was probably used in a well-defined area of the western Mediterranean corresponding to the central and eastern part of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

International audience; This communication presents the preliminary results of a new joint project between the Archaeological Museum of Istria and the Centre Camille Jullian for the investigation of a shipwreck discovered in 2015 in the bay of Debeljak, in shallow waters (- 4 m). This bay is situated at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula (Croatia) within the Natural Park of Cape Kamenjak. Interesting results from the study of the ship structure were gathered in September 2017 and May 2018 will be presented. The ship construction is dated between 380 and 415 AD by AMS radiocarbone dating. The fragments of amphore, found in the surface layera in contact with the déposait, and from the cargo, confirm this late date in antiquity (Late Roman 1 amphora type). The structures uncovered in 2017 correspond to the bottom of the hull. The planning, composed by a large number of planks, is flush laid, carcel built using the typical Greco- Roman assembly system of “mortise and tenons” joints. The frames, spaces on average 17.6 cm, are also composed of a large number of independent eléements, and are connected to the planking by treenails. One floor timber shows a bolt for its assembly to the keel. The keel is not preserved in the area excavated to date. The présence of notches cut into the top of this floor timbres indicate an atypical arrangement of the keelson which is set on the top of a pair of sister keelsons, as documented in other Roman ships dated from the Empire to Late Antiquity. Repairs have been also documented. The shipwreck of Debeljak is particularly interesting within the corpus of the Late Roman maritime shilling vessels of the Mediterranean during a key period for the transition from shell to skeleton shipbuilding.

Fifty years ago, in 1968, André Tchernia, at the time director of the French Ministry of Culture’s newly created ‘Direction des Recherches Archéologiques Sous-Marine’, commenced excavation of a Roman-era wreck, Planier III (mid 1st century BC) in Marseilles Bay. It was the first French underwater excavation carried out by academics (1968, 1970 – 1971, 1975; Tchernia, then P. Pomey), the project, beyond its scientific interest, played the role of a technical test site in view of excavating the Madrague de Giens wreck. With this goal in mind, in 1970 Tchernia assembled a team within the Institut d’Archéologie Méditerranéenne (IAM) (UP-CNRS) made up of underwater archaeologists and specialist technicians. This was the first team of this type within either the university or the CNRS, and it became the maritime and nautical-archaeology team now attached to the Centre Camille Jullian, created in 1978 following on from the IAM.The Madrague de Giens excavation (1st century BC) directed between 1972 and 1982 by Tchernia and Pomey, assisted by A. Hesnard, was the founding project for French scientific underwater archaeology. The extent of the wreck allowed a light to be thrown on both the study of the cargo within the framework of research into maritime trade and the analysis of the hull, which enabled the development of nautical archaeological studies.In the wake of the Giens excavation, the team took on the excavation of the Roman wrecks of Grand Ribaud D (1983 – 1984, Hesnard) and Camarat 2 (1987 – 1989, Hesnard; 1993 – 1994, M.-B. Carre).From 1991 to 2000, Pomey with F. Guibal (AMU, CNRS, IMBE) launched a programme of research into the dendrochronology of ancient wrecks, which led to the re-opening and analysis of about 30 ancient wrecks from along the French Mediterranean coast.At the same time, in 1992 – 1993, the activities of the CCJ widened to include the archaeology of ports with the excavation of the ancient port of Marseilles, Place Jules Vernes (directed by Hesnard). Seven ancient wrecks, of Greek and Roman dates, were found and excavated, and their study was entrusted to the nautical-archaeology team at the CCJ (directed by Pomey). This study led in 2013 to the construction of Gyptis, a sailing replica of the ancient Greek wreck Jules Verne 9, which confirmed the CCJ’s specialization in the reconstruction of ancient wrecks (P. Poveda, M. Rival, R. Roman).Within the framework of nautical archaeology in a port context, from 2004, G. Boetto was able to excavate and study the wrecks of the ports of Ostia, Naples, Isola Sacra, and Toulon. And since 2007, as part of a Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs mission, and in collaboration with various Croatian partners, she has directed archaeological research into the ancient wrecks of Dalmatia, Istria and on the river Kupa, including the sewn boat of Zambratija, dated to the late Bronze Age., Il y a cinquante ans, en 1968, André Tchernia, alors responsable de la Direction des Recherches Archéologiques Sous-Marines nouvellement créée par le Ministère de la Culture, lance la fouille de l’épave romaine Planier III (milieu Ier s. av. J.-C.) en rade de Marseille. Première fouille sous-marine française dirigée par des universitaires (1968, 1970-71, 1975 ; A. Tchernia, puis P. Pomey), la fouille, outre son intérêt scientifique, jouera le rôle de laboratoire technique en prévision de la fouille de la Madrague de Giens. Dans ce but, A. Tchernia constitue en 1970 au sein de l’Institut d’Archéologie Méditerranéenne (UP-CNRS) une équipe d’archéologie sous-marine comportant des archéologues et des techniciens spécialisés. Première équipe de ce genre au sein de l’Université et du CNRS, elle sera à l’origine de l’équipe d’archéologie maritime et navale de l’actuel Centre Camille Jullian (AMU, CNRS, MCC) créé en 1978 à partir de l’IAM.La fouille de la Madrague de Giens (Ier s. av. J.-C.), dirigée de 1972 à 1982 par A. Tchernia et P. Pomey avec l’assistance d’A. Hesnard, constitue la fouille fondatrice de l’archéologie sous-marine scientifique française. L’ampleur de l’épave conduit à mettre en valeur, d’une part, l’étude de la cargaison dans le cadre des recherches sur le commerce maritime, et d’autre part, l’analyse de la coque qui permet de développer les études d’archéologie navale. Dans la suite de la fouille de Giens, l’équipe entreprend les fouilles des épaves romaines Grand Ribaud D (1983-84, A. Hesnard) et Camarat 2 (1987-89, A. Hesnard ; 1993-94, M.-B. Carre). Puis de 1991 à 2000, P. Pomey lance avec F. Guibal (AMU, CNRS, IMBE) le programme de recherche sur la dendrochronologie des épaves antiques qui conduit à la réouverture et à l’analyse d’une trentaine d’épaves antiques des côtes méditerranéennes françaises.Parallèlement, en 1992-1993, le CCJ élargi son activité à l’archéologie portuaire avec la fouille du port antique de Marseille, place Jules-Verne (dir. A. Hesnard). Sept épaves antiques, grecques et romaines, en y sont découvertes dont la fouille et l’étude sont confiées à l’équipe d’archéologie navale du CCJ (dir. P. Pomey). Cette étude donnera lieu en 2013 à la réalisation d e la réplique navigante Gyptis de l’épave grecque archaïque Jules-Verne 9, confirmant ainsi la spécialisation du CCJ dans la reconstitution des navires antiques (P. Poveda, M. Rival, R. Roman). Dans le cadre des études d’archéologie navale en contexte portuaire, G. Boetto a été amenée, à partir de 2004, à fouiller et étudier les épaves des ports d’Ostie, de Naples, de l’Isola Sacra et de Toulon. Depuis 2007, dans le cadre d’une mission du Ministère de l’Europe et des affaires étrangères et en collaboration avec divers partenaires croates, elle dirige des recherches archéologiques sur des épaves antiques en Dalmatie, Istrie et sur la rivière Kupa, dont l’épave du bateau cousu de Zambratija de la fin de l’âge du Bronze.

Depuis 2007, avec la fouille de l’épave de l’Antiquité tardive de Pakoštane, l’équipe d’archéologie navale du Centre Camille Jullian - UMR 7299 est engagée dans des recherches archéologiques sous-marines et subaquatiques en Croatie pour l’étude des traditions de construction navale d’époque antique en Adriatique orientale et en Europe Sud-orientale. A partir de 2009, les recherches en collaboration avec l’Université de Zadar ont été centrées sur le site côtier de Caska (île de Pag) où se trouvait la résidence d’une des plus nobles familles de l’ordre sénatorial, les Calpurnii. Nous avons pu étudier les vestiges de bateaux romains réutilisés dans la construction de structures portuaires. Il s’agit de trois barques cousues et d’un voilier assemblé par « tenons et mortaises ». En 2013, à la demande du Musée archéologique d’Istrie, l’équipe du CCJ a participé à la fouille du plus ancien bateau cousu de Méditerranée (fin XIIe-fin Xe s. av. J.-C.) à Zambratija (Umag) et de deux autres épaves de bateaux cousus d’époque impériale découvertes dans le port antique de Pula. Bien que les activités de terrain en collaboration avec ce musée n’ont repris qu’en 2017 avec la fouille de l’épave de l’Antiquité tardive de Debeljak (Premantura), la collaboration n’a jamais été interrompue car l’expertise du CCJ a été plusieurs fois sollicitée pour le suivi du traitement de conservation des épaves de Pula, la publication des résultats des recherches communes et l’organisation d’une exposition itinérante centrée sur l’épave de Zambratija. Enfin, la collaboration avec l’Institut de conservation croate a porté sur l’étude de deux épaves : le chaland d’époque impériale avec chargement de briques de Kamensko (2015-2018) et une épave romano-républicaine découverte dans la baie de Paržine, île de Ilovik (2018). Le MEAE accompagne toutes ces recherches depuis 2010, avec les programmes « Navires et navigation en Dalmatie romaine : recherches d’archéologie maritime et navale Pag, à Caska (île de Croatie) » (2010-2013) et « ADRIBOATS - Navires et navigation en Adriatique orientale dans l’Antiquité » (2015-2018). L’Institut français à Zagreb a soutenu l’exposition sur l’épave de Zambratija et le dispositif Campus France a octroyé des bourses de mobilité, notamment en soutien d’étudiants croates inscrits au « Master of Maritime and Coastal Archaeology –MoMarch » de la Fondation *Amidex d’Aix Marseille Université. Cette même université appuie les recherches en Croatie par le biais de deux contrats doctoraux en partenariat avec l’Ecole française de Rome (projets de Mlle Alba Ferreira Dominguez intitulé « Les épaves de l’espace Adriatique oriental de la protohistoire à l’Antiquité Tardive : contribution à l’étude des traditions locales de construction navale » et de M Anton Divić intitulé « La dimension nautique de la rivière Kupa (Croatie) durant l’Antiquité »). Le LabexMed d’AMU, l’EFR et le Ministère de la Culture ont soutenu la Summer School ARS NAUTICA – Seafaring through the Ages. Nautical Heritage of the Mediterranean qui a eu lieu à l’Inter-University Centre de Dubrovnik du 7 au 10 juin 2017. Enfin, la mission a eu l’honneur de se voir décerner deux fois consécutives le Label Archéologie de l’Académie des Inscriptions et des Belles Lettres (2016-2017 et 2018-2019). Au-delà des importants et originaux résultats concernant la façade maritime et les structures portuaires de la villa maritime de Caska, les programmes « CASKA » et « ADRIBOATS » ont permis de récolter des données inédites sur la construction des bateaux de l’espace Adriatique. Les travaux de terrain en Dalmatie, Istrie et en Croatie continentale permettent d’ores et déjà de renouveler nos connaissances sur les traditions de construction navale de cet espace géographique. Ces recherches font émerger l’importance sur le plan nautique d’une région mal connue jusqu’à présent mais riche d’anciennes traditions locales (ligatures, agrafes) préservées grâce à des espaces nautiques particuliers (archipélagique, eaux intérieures), tout en étant ouverte aux influences d’autres traditions (tenons et mortaises) par le jeu des échanges économiques. La quatrième et dernière année d’activités du programme quadriennal « ADRIBOATS » a comporté trois opérations de terrain, en Istrie (Debeljak), dans la rivière Kupa (Kamensko) et dans l’archipel du Kvarner (Paržine), ainsi que des actions de valorisation. La mission à Debeljak, en collaboration avec le Musée archéologique d’Istrie, a permis de dégager presque dans sa totalité l’épave de l’Antiquité tardive dont la fouille avait commencé en 2017. Le fond du navire, complètement ouvert et aplati, présente un bordé assemblé selon la technique dite à « tenon et mortaise » et est conservé sur 14,3 m de long et 7 m de large. Les quelques fragments d’amphores renvoient à un chargement d’origine orientale (Late Roman 1) et confirment la datation C14 qui place la construction entre la fin du IVe et le début du Ve siècle ap. J.-C. Une dernière opération sur ce site est prévue en 2019. En parallèle, les analyses visant à l’identification du bois utilisé dans la construction seront finalisées dans l’espoir d’appréhender l’origine et le lieu de construction du navire. Les résultats seront comparés à ceux obtenus sur l’épave contemporaine de Pakoštane. Les activités de recherche en collaboration avec l’Institut de conservation croate ont porté sur deux sites d’épaves. A Kamensko, nous avons pu compléter l’étude du chargement et des structures de la coque du chaland. Nous pouvons estimer que le poids de la cargaison transportée dépassait les 5,4 tonnes. Puisque environ 82% des briques analysées (297 sur un nombre minimal estimé de 477) présente la même marque de production, un alpha imprimé sur l’argile avant le séchage, il est fort probable que cette embarcation transportait un chargement homogène provenant d’un même lieu de production. Un alpha est aussi gravé sur un des flancs du bateau ce qui nous permet d’émettre l’hypothèse d’un atelier ayant son propre moyen de transport pour écouler sa production. Comme les briques couvraient l’emplanture du mât de halage, il est probable que le bateau descendait la rivière au grès d’eau et que il ne s’agit pas d’un transport de briques depuis la colonie de Siscia (actuelle Sisak) qui se trouve en amont et où des briqueteries sont attestées par l’épigraphie. Au niveau architectural, le chaland de Kamensko, dont les vestiges sont conservés sur 12 m de longueur et 2 m de largeur, est construit « sur sole ». Le fond plat sans quille est constitué de trois longues virures en chêne. Deux pièces monoxyles façonnées dans deux troncs de chêne de grandes dimensions (jusqu’à 1 m de diamètre) forment les bouchains et les flancs de l’embarcation. La campagne 2018, nous a permis d’acquérir de données importantes sur le système de propulsion avec la mise au jour du massif d’emplanture du mât de halage et sur le système d’assemblage et d’étancheité de la coque. La sole, dont les virures sont assemblées par des petites agrafes métalliques placées à la fois à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur, est rendue étanche par des cordelettes en fibres végétales (lutage). L’étude de ce chaland a permis donc d’appréhender les caractéristiques techniques d’une tradition de construction navale d’époque romaine propre au bassin hydrographique du Danube et dont, à l’heure actuelle, nous connaissons seulement trois autres exemples à Kušjak en Serbie, dans la rivière Ljubljanica à Sinja Gorica en Slovenie et dans la Kupa à Sisak. Enfin, une courte expertise a été réalisée sur une épave du IIe siècle av. J.-C. découverte en 2016 dans la baie de Paržine, île de Ilovik. Les observations réalisées sur la quille ont permis d’émettre l’hypothèse d’un navire ayant une forme de carène dite « à retour de galbord », un profil transversal typique du type architectural hellénistique et dont l’archétype est à rechercher dans le bateau de Kyrenia de la fin du IVe siècle av. J.-C. Toutefois, la forme longitudinale de la coque de l’épave de Paržine est tout-à-fait inédite et peu documentée par l’archéologie. Le navire était caractérisé par un profil longitudinal asymétrique, avec un avant à étrave droit ou renversé, à l’exemple du célèbre navire de la Madrague de Giens (France, 75 et 60 av. J.-C.). Avenir du projet / renouvellement du programme : Compte tenu de la richesse du patrimoine nautique de la Croatie qui puise ses racines dans une histoire maritime et fluviale pluriséculaire, le programme « ADRIBOATS », qui apporte une expertise très spécialisée dans le champ disciplinaire de l’archéologie navale, mérite d’être renouvelé. Les liens tissus avec nos partenaires locaux sont solides. Le réseau de recherche que nous avons crée au fil des années est appelé à se développer compte tenu aussi de l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération de chercheurs dont certains ont choisi de se former en France dans le cadre du master d’excellence *Amidex d’AMU « MomArch » puis de continuer leurs recherches dans le cadre d’un doctorat en co-tutelle. A côté de l’achèvement de l’opération à Debeljak et de l’avancement du dossier de publication, deux opérations sont, à notre avis, très prometteuses et méritent un engagement forte de la France et de son savoir-faire appliqué à l’étude des embarcations antiques. Il s’agit de la poursuite des recherches sur la nouvelle épave de Paržine. Par sa datation (IIe s. av. J.-C.), le type de navire inédit (navire à étrave renversée ou droite), le chargement (Lamboglia 2 archaïques et, probablement, bois) et les conditions logistiques très avantageuses (appui des forces spéciales de la Police et du Musée archéologique de Mali Lošinj), la fouille de cette épave sera programmée en 2019 et 2020. L’autre projet phare est celui qui concerne le levage, l’étude complète, puis la conservation, restauration et exposition de l’épave de Zambratija. Cette épave, datée entre la fin du XIIe et la fin du Xe siècles av. J.-C., représente le chaînon manquant qui nous permet de suivre la filiation des bateaux cousus romains d’Adriatique orientale à partir d’une tradition de construction navale autochtone fortement localisée. Il s’agit d’une monoxyle assemblée unique dans son genre. Le début des opérations est programmé en 2021. Le projet s’appuie sur une dynamique forte et sur un réel engagement de notre partenaire, le Musée archéologique d’Istrie. Par ailleurs, un volume monographique en croate et en anglais est en cours de finalisation (12 sur 14 chapitres rédigés en anglais correspondant à 117 000 caractères espaces compris) et sera publié en 2019 dans la collection « Monografije i katalozi » du musée. En revanche, l’opération de renflouage du chaland de Kamensko, dont il avait été question en 2017, nous paraît actuellement prématurée compte tenu de la situation du Musée de Karlovac (conservatrice très jeune et inexpérimenté) et des relations entre ce musée et le Département pour la protection du patrimoine culturel de la région. Nous continuerons, toutefois, à offrir notre soutien si un porteur de projet croate prendra l’initiative de rédiger un cahier de charge réaliste. Notre présence sur place en 2019 pour une campagne photographique et de prospection en appui du projet doctoral de A. Divic, nous permettra aussi de mieux saisir les diverses opportunités qui pourront s’ouvrir. Publications scientifiques et valorisation de la recherche : Dans le cadre du programme « ADRIBOATS », nous avons organisé l’exposition itinérante « Zambratija - prapovijesni šivani brod / Zambratija - prehistoric sewn boat / Una barca preistorica cucita / Un bateau cousu préhistorique » qui a été proposé, entre juillet 2017 et septembre 2018, dans diverses villes croates (Pula, Zagreb, Sibenik, Zadar, Umag) ainsi qu’en France (JNA et 15th ISBSA à Marseille). La deuxième édition du catalogue a été publiée en 2018. Nous avons aussi organisé avec I. Radić Rossi, trois workshops à Dubrovnik, dont celui de 2017 a vu la participation d’une quarantaine de personnes entre experts et étudiants croates, français et d’autres nationalités. Les membres du programme ont présenté 18 communications orales ou sous forme de posters à des colloques internationaux et ont participé à une douzaine de séminaires ou conférences. Le volume monographique en croate et en anglais sur l’épave de Pakoštane a été publié dans la collection de l’Université de Zadar « Archaeology of Adriatic Shipbuilding and Seafaring » en 2018. Sur la quinzaine d’articles scientifiques ou chapitres d’ouvrages publiés ou sous presse, on rappellera l’article « Recherches d’archéologie navale en Adriatique orientale » paru dans les CRAI de novembre-décembre, 2016 (p. 1401-1422) et un grand article de synthèse accepté et à paraître en mars 2019 dans l’IJNA intitulé « Ancient Mediterranean Sewn Boat Traditions » (auteurs P. Pomey et G. Boetto). Un volume monographique sur le site de Caska est en cours de rédaction et sera publié dans la collection de l’Université de Zadar « Archaeology of Adriatic Shipbuilding and Seafaring ». La publication scientifique des épaves de Caska, Pula et Kamensko sera aussi prioritaire sur des revues de rang A (International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Journal of Roman Archaeology, Archaeonautica, etc) ou dans le cadre de la publication des actes de colloques internationaux.

International audience; Thanks to a long-term programme of preventive urban archaeology promoted by the Archaeological Superintendence of the Italian Ministry of Culture, the city of Naples has rediscovered its millenary connection with the sea. The construction of the metro lines 1 and 6 allowed the archaeologists to reconstruct the maritime landscape of Neapolis from the Hellenistic up to the Late Roman times. The excavations in Piazza Municipio, near the Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino) castle, revealed an important sector of the ancient harbour with its infrastructures some of which were very well preserved. The remains of eight shipwrecks dated from the end of the 2nd century BCE up to the 3rd century AD offered a wide rage of ships types in use in the harbour of the city allowing improving our knowledge in the Ancient shipbuilding techniques and giving the evidence of new and unknown ship types related to specific fonctions.

International audience; From 2007, the team of underwater archaeologists and technicians of the centre Camille Jullian (Aix Marseille University, CNRS) is involved in several research programs in Croatia, in the frame of bilateral scientific collaborations with governmental institutes (University of Zadar, Archaeological Museum of Istria and Croatian Conservation Institute). The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs mainly support these researches. The paper will present the data gathered from the study of several shipwrecks dated from the Bronze Age to the Roman era recently excavated in Croatia, in coastal and riverine areas. The study of these shipwrecks sheds a new light in the local shipbuilding practises and gives an insight on the different shipbuilding traditions, which succeeded in the Adriatic and in the adjacent continental regions in the ancient times.

International audience; The presentation provides preliminary results of archaeological researches undertaken in the Zambratija Cove (Umag, Istria County), by the Archaeological Museum of Istria in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the Centre Camille Jullian (Aix-Marseille University – CNRS). In Zambratija, the seabed preserved the remains of a sewn vessel preserved up to the gunwale for about 7 m. This exceptional sewn ship, which is the more ancient example of a boat entirely sewn ever found in Mediterranean, as it has been dated between the last quarter of the 12th c. and the last quarter of the 10th c. BCE, corresponds also to an unparalleled architectural type of boat. The sewing technique employed for the assemblage of the planking and the related water tightness system, is also unparalleled.Due to these architectural characteristics, the type of assemblies and the early date of the boat, the ship of Zambratija could be considered as the archetypal of one of the traditions of sewing boats identified within the Adriatic geographical zone. This tradition, called “Illyrian sewn tradition”, survived till the Roman time (“Romano-Illyrian sewn tradition”) as demonstrated by the discovery of 8 shipwrecks dated from the 1st to the 2nd c. AD in Istria, at Pula, and in Dalmatia, at Caska and Zaton.

International audience; From 2007, the team of nautical archaeology of the Centre Camille Jullian-UMR 7299 is engaged in underwater archaeological researches in Croatia for the study of the shipbuilding traditions in Ancient times in Eastern Adriatic and in South-eastern Europe. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Institute for Human and Social Sciences of the CNRS and the Centre Camille Jullian have supported the numerous fieldwork campaigns realized till now. All these researches have been achieved in the frame of local programmes supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, in collaboration with our Croatian colleagues from the University of Zadar, the Archaeological Museum of Istria and the Croatian Conservation Institute. In this note we will present the most important results gathered from the study of the shipwreck investigated within these research programmes. These studies already have permitted to renovate our knowledge about the shipbuilding of pre-Roman and, mainly, of Roman time of this geographical transport zone. Thank to the shipwreck of Zambratija (Istria), we were able to study the more ancient example of an entirely sewn boat in Mediterranean (last quarter of the 12th-last quarter of the 10th centuries BC) providing the archaeological evidence of the local development of a shipbuilding tradition of sewn vessels. In Caska (Pag island) and Pula we were able to follow the developments in the Roman Imperial time of this tradition of local shipbuilding. We were also able to observe the coexistence of two techniques for the planking assembly, by sewing technique and by the so-called “mortise and tenon” joint. Moreover, this last technique is widely used in that time in Eastern Adriatic until the Late Antiquity (shipwreck of Pakoštane). Finally, beside the maritime vessels, our researches have led us to be interested to the inland shipbuilding traditions in continental Croatia (shipwreck of Kamensko). This geographical area, under-exploited from the point of view of the studies in nautical archaeology, is at a crossroad of several maritime and continental shipbuilding traditions. So, the study of inland crafts is important in order to understand the development of the autochthone traditions using the sewn assemblages and other techniques of assembly and waterproofing, such as the use of metallic clamps.; Depuis 2007, l’équipe d’archéologie navale du Centre Camille Jullian-UMR 7299 est engagée dans des recherches archéologiques sous-marines et subaquatiques en Croatie pour l’étude des traditions de construction navale d’époque antique en Adriatique orientale et en Europe Sud-orientale. Les nombreuses missions de terrain réalisées jusqu’à maintenant ont reçu le soutien du Ministère des affaires étrangères et du développement international, mais aussi de l’Institut national des Sciences Humaines et Sociales du CNRS et du Centre Camille Jullian. Toutes ces recherches sont réalisées au sein de programmes locaux appuyés par le Ministère de la Culture de la république de Croatie, en étroite collaboration avec nos collègues croates de l’Université de Zadar, du Musée archéologique d’Istrie et de l’Institut de conservation croate.Dans cette note d’information nous présenterons les principales données issues de l’étude des épaves fouillées dans le cadre de ces programmes de recherche. Ces études permettent d’ores et déjà de renouveler nos connaissances sur les traditions de construction navale d’époque préromaine et, notamment, romaine de cet espace géographique. C’est grâce à l’épave de Zambratija (Istrie), que nous avons pu étudier le plus ancien exemple connu en Méditerranée d’un bateau entièrement cousu (dernier quart du XIIe - dernier quart du Xe siècle av. J.-C.) apportant la preuve archéologique du développement local d’une tradition de bateaux assemblés par ligatures. A Caska (île de Pag) et à Pula nous avons pu suivre les développements à l’époque romaine impériale de cette tradition de construction navale locale et observer la coexistence des deux techniques d’assemblage du bordé, par ligatures et par « tenons et mortaises ». Par ailleurs, cette dernière technique est à cette époque largement employée en Adriatique orientale et le sera jusqu’à l’Antiquité tardive (épave de Pakoštane). Enfin, à côté des embarcations maritimes, nos recherches nous ont amenés à nous intéresser aux traditions de construction navale en milieu fluviale en Croatie continentale (épave de Kamensko). Cette zone géographique, sous exploitée du point de vue de la recherche, est particulièrement intéressante en raison de sa position à la croisée de plusieurs traditions navales maritimes et continentales. Aussi l’étude des épaves fluviales est-elle très importante pour comprendre le développement de la tradition autochtone de bateaux cousus et sa relation avec d’autres techniques comme celle qui utilise des agrafes métalliques pour garantir l’étanchéité de la coque.

International audience; The poster presents the preliminary results of the study of a shipwreck found in the cove of Zambratija, south of Cape Savudrija. This shipwreck is dated to the Bronze Age and, till now, represents the most ancient example of a sewn vessel in the Mediterranean.

International audience; The island of Pag belongs to the geographical region of Northern Dalmatia, and is one of the five biggest islands of Croatia. A Liburnian population inhabited it during the time of the Roman conquest, and Pliny the Elder mentioned it under the name of Cissa (Hist. Nat., 3, 140). Although the position of the main Liburnian settlement has not been confirmed, it has been suggested that it was situated on the hill of Košljun in the near vicinity of the bay of Caska, at the north-western edge of the gulf of Pag. The bay of Caska preserved the notable remains of a multi-stratified settlement, whose important phase seems to be identifiable with a big and well-organized maritime villa property of the senatorial family Calpurnii Pisones. The systematic documentation and study of the structures on land and underwater started just recently, revealing some interesting archaeological features.The muddy bottom of the bay preserved a wooden anchor, an interesting structure made of rectangular caissons composed of logs and filled with stones, which probably served as the basis of a pier or a breakwater, and the remains of three seagoing vessels from the Early Roman Imperial Period, uncovered until 2015. The boat Caska 1, about 9 m long, was assembled with the old local sewing technique that survived into Roman times. It was probably scuttled and reused to reinforce some pier-like wooden coastal structure. On the other hand, Caska 2 is more than 15 m long, and was assembled by the standard Roman mortise-and-tenon shipbuilding technique. This ship was also scuttled and reused in a pier-like structure. Finally, a fragment of planking of a sewn boat similar to Caska 1, named Caska 3, was found inside the ship Caska 2. The poster aims at presenting the remains of the three ships, without entering into details on their secondary infrastructural function, and the adjacent harbour structures.

International audience; This communication presents the preliminary results of the study of three shipwrecks recently discovered in Istria (Croatia). The first shipwreck was found in the cove of Zambratija, south of Cape Savudrija. It is dated to the Bronze Age and, till now, represents the most ancient example of a sewn vessel in the Mediterranean. The others two shipwrecks were discovered in the Pula city centre during a rescue excavation in wet environment. These two sewn ships (Pula 1 and Pula 2), dated to the Roman Empire, were abandoned within the harbour basin of the ancient Roman colony of Pula.

International audience; Les récentes découvertes d’épaves de barges fluviales gallo-romaines à Lyon au Parc Saint-Georges, en 2003, et à Arles à partir de 2002, ont non seulement attiré l’attention sur la batellerie fluviale gallo-romaine mais aussi porté au premier plan des recherches le bassin rhodanien et le midi de la Gaule jusque-là peu présent ou même totalement absent du débat. Ce volume est issu d'une rencontre sur le thème de la batellerie gallo-romaine à la lumière de ces découvertes récentes organisée à Aix-en-Provence dans le cadre des Séminaires de recherche en archéologie maritime méditerranéenne du Centre Camille Jullian.

This upload includes the results of dendrochronological investigation of pine (Pinus sp.) timbers from the Triunfante shipwreck, a ship from the Spanish Royal Navy built in Ferrol (NW Spain) in 1754/56 and sunk off the Cabo de Rosas (NE Spain), in the Mediterranean, in 1795. None of the samples could be dated. This shipwreck was researched within the scope of the NWO-funded project Filling in the blanks in European dendrochronology. This report includes the results of dendrochronological investigation of one timber from a shipwreck found in Huelva (SW Spain) and excavated by the Centro de Arqueología Subacuática (CAS), which was researched within the scope of the NWO-funded project Filling in the blanks in European dendrochronology. I also provide the tree-ring dataset (ring widths) obtained from the sample and an excel sheet with metadata.

Three Roman shipwrecks ( Napoli A and Napoli C – 1st cent. AD; Napoli B – 2nd century AD) were recovered in the sandy-silt sediments representing the infilling of a protected inlet of Neapolis harbour (Naples, southern Italy). Extensive wood analysis suggests that a very attentive selection of species was made in shipbuilding, the choice of timber being related to wood technological properties and to the structural uses of the construction elements. Pollen data obtained from the coeval sedimentary layers revealed that all the timber taxa (apart from Picea/Larix ) were present in the surroundings of the study area. The identified forest taxa are very common in the Mediterranean basin and thus the pollen-wood comparison was not able to define the location of the shipyards. Broad comparison with western Mediterranean wrecks evidenced the peculiarity of the Neapolis ships where the systematic use of both Juglans regia and Cupressus sempervirens was highlighted. Archaeological, biogeographical and archaeobotanical considerations suggest the local provenance of the ship C and constrain the possible origin area of both the ship Napoli A and Napoli B to central-southern Tyrrhenian coasts.
