Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become extremely popular for both military and civilian applications due to their ease of deployment, cost-effectiveness, high maneuverability, and availability. Both applications, however, need reliable communication for command and control (C2) and/or data transmission. Utilizing commercial cellular networks for drone communication can enable beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operation, high data rate transmission, and secure communication. However, deployment of cellular-connected drones over commercial LTE/5G networks still presents various challenges such as sparse coverage outside urban areas, and interference caused to the network as the UAV is visible to many towers. Commercial 5G networks can offer various features for aerial user equipment (UE) far beyond what LTE could provide by taking advantage of mmWave, flexible numerology, slicing, and the capability of applying AI-based solutions. Limited experimental data is available to investigate the operation of aerial UEs over current, without any modification, commercial 5G networks, particularly in suburban and NON-URBAN areas. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive study of drone communications over the existing low-band and mid-band 5G networks in a suburban area for different velocities and elevations, comparing the performance against that of LTE. It is important to acknowledge that the network examined in this research is primarily designed and optimized to meet the requirements of terrestrial users, and may not adequately address the needs of aerial users. This paper not only reports the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) compared among all combinations of the test cases but also provides recommendations for aerial users to enhance their communication quality by controlling their trajectory.

Passive space-borne radiometers operating in the 1400-1427 MHz protected frequency band face radio frequency interference (RFI) from terrestrial sources. With the growth of wireless devices and the appearance of new technologies, the possibility of sharing this spectrum with other technologies would introduce more RFI to these radiometers. This band could be an ideal mid-band frequency for 5G and Beyond, as it offers high capacity and good coverage. Current RFI detection and mitigation techniques at SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) depend on correctly detecting and discarding or filtering the contaminated data leading to the loss of valuable information, especially in severe RFI cases. In this paper, we propose an autoencoder-based RFI mitigation method to remove the dominant RFI caused by potential coexistent terrestrial users (i.e., 5G base station) from the received contaminated signal at the passive receiver side, potentially preserving valuable information and preventing the contaminated data from being discarded., To be published in IEEE IGARSS 2023

Deep learning image processing models have had remarkable success in recent years in generating high quality images. Particularly, the Improved Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPM) have shown superiority in image quality to the state-of-the-art generative models, which motivated us to investigate their capability in the generation of the synthetic electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. In this work, synthetic ECG signals are generated by the Improved DDPM and by the Wasserstein GAN with Gradient Penalty (WGAN-GP) models and then compared. To this end, we devise a pipeline to utilize DDPM in its original $2D$ form. First, the $1D$ ECG time series data are embedded into the $2D$ space, for which we employed the Gramian Angular Summation/Difference Fields (GASF/GADF) as well as Markov Transition Fields (MTF) to generate three $2D$ matrices from each ECG time series, which when put together, form a $3$-channel $2D$ datum. Then $2D$ DDPM is used to generate $2D$ $3$-channel synthetic ECG images. The $1D$ ECG signals are created by de-embedding the $2D$ generated image files back into the $1D$ space. This work focuses on unconditional models and the generation of \emph{Normal Sinus Beat} ECG signals exclusively, where the Normal Sinus Beat class from the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia dataset is used in the training phase. The \emph{quality}, \emph{distribution}, and the \emph{authenticity} of the generated ECG signals by each model are quantitatively evaluated and compared. Our results show that in the proposed pipeline and in the particular setting of this paper, the WGAN-GP model is consistently superior to DDPM in all the considered metrics.

In the medical field, current ECG signal analysis approaches rely on supervised deep neural networks trained for specific tasks that require substantial amounts of labeled data. However, our paper introduces ECGBERT, a self-supervised representation learning approach that unlocks the underlying language of ECGs. By unsupervised pre-training of the model, we mitigate challenges posed by the lack of well-labeled and curated medical data. ECGBERT, inspired by advances in the area of natural language processing and large language models, can be fine-tuned with minimal additional layers for various ECG-based problems. Through four tasks, including Atrial Fibrillation arrhythmia detection, heartbeat classification, sleep apnea detection, and user authentication, we demonstrate ECGBERT's potential to achieve state-of-the-art results on a wide variety of tasks.

ECG databases are usually highly imbalanced due to the abundance of Normal ECG and scarcity of abnormal cases. As such, deep learning classifiers trained on imbalanced datasets usually perform poorly, especially on minor classes. One solution is to generate realistic synthetic ECG signals using Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to augment imbalanced datasets. In this study, we combined conditional GAN with WGAN-GP and developed AC-WGAN-GP in 1D form for the first time to be applied on MIT-BIH Arrhythmia dataset. We investigated the impact of data augmentation on arrhythmia classification. We employed two models for ECG generation: (i) unconditional GAN; Wasserstein GAN with gradient penalty (WGAN-GP) is trained on each class individually; (ii) conditional GAN; one Auxiliary Classifier WGAN-GP (AC-WGAN-GP) model is trained on all classes and then used to generate synthetic beats in all classes. Two scenarios are defined for each case: (a) unscreened; all the generated synthetic beats were used, and (b) screened; only a portion of generated beats are selected and used, based on their Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) distance to a designated template. A state-of-the-art ResNet classifier (EcgResNet34) is trained on each of the augmented datasets and the performance metrics (precision/recall/F1-Score micro- and macro-averaged, confusion matrices, multiclass precision-recall curves) were compared with those of the unaugmented imbalanced case. We also used a simple metric Net Improvement. All the three metrics show consistently that net improvement (total and minor-class), unconditional GAN with raw generated data (not screened) creates the best improvements.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) present a promising advanced technology that can enhance people life quality and smartness of cities dramatically and increase overall economic efficiency. UAVs have attained a significant interest in supporting many applications such as surveillance, agriculture, communication, transportation, pollution monitoring, disaster management, public safety, healthcare, and environmental preservation. Industry 4.0 applications are conceived of intelligent things that can automatically and collaboratively improve beyond 5G (B5G). Therefore, the Internet of Things (IoT) is required to ensure collaboration between the vast multitude of things efficiently anywhere in real-world applications that are monitored in real-time. However, many IoT devices consume a significant amount of energy when transmitting the collected data from surrounding environments. Due to a drone's capability to fly closer to IoT, UAV technology plays a vital role in greening IoT by transmitting collected data to achieve a sustainable, reliable, eco-friendly Industry 4.0. This survey presents an overview of the techniques and strategies proposed recently to achieve green IoT using UAVs infrastructure for a reliable and sustainable smart world. This survey is different from other attempts in terms of concept, focus, and discussion. Finally, various use cases, challenges, and opportunities regarding green IoT using UAVs are presented.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is among one of the most common types of heart arrhythmia afflicting more than 3 million people in the U.S. alone. AF is estimated to be the cause of death of 1 in 4 individuals. Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have led to the capability of reliably detecting AF from ECG signals. While these algorithms can accurately detect AF with high precision, the discrete and deterministic classifications mean that these networks are likely to erroneously classify the given ECG signal. This paper proposes a variational autoencoder classifier network that provides an uncertainty estimation of the network's output in addition to reliable classification accuracy. This framework can increase physicians' trust in using AI-based AF detection algorithms by providing them with a confidence score which reflects how uncertain the algorithm is about a case and recommending them to put more attention to the cases with a lower confidence score. The uncertainty is estimated by conducting multiple passes of the input through the network to build a distribution; the mean of the standard deviations is reported as the network's uncertainty. Our proposed network obtains 97.64% accuracy in addition to reporting the uncertainty

This paper proposes piece-wise matching layer as a novel layer in representation learning methods for electrocardiogram (ECG) classification. Despite the remarkable performance of representation learning methods in the analysis of time series, there are still several challenges associated with these methods ranging from the complex structures of methods, the lack of generality of solutions, the need for expert knowledge, and large-scale training datasets. We introduce the piece-wise matching layer that works based on two levels to address some of the aforementioned challenges. At the first level, a set of morphological, statistical, and frequency features and comparative forms of them are computed based on each periodic part and its neighbors. At the second level, these features are modified by predefined transformation functions based on a receptive field scenario. Several scenarios of offline processing, incremental processing, fixed sliding receptive field, and event-based triggering receptive field can be implemented based on the choice of length and mechanism of indicating the receptive field. We propose dynamic time wrapping as a mechanism that indicates a receptive field based on event triggering tactics. To evaluate the performance of this method in time series analysis, we applied the proposed layer in two publicly available datasets of PhysioNet competitions in 2015 and 2017 where the input data is ECG signal. We compared the performance of our method against a variety of known tuned methods from expert knowledge, machine learning, deep learning methods, and the combination of them. The proposed approach improves the state of the art in two known completions 2015 and 2017 around 4% and 7% correspondingly while it does not rely on in advance knowledge of the classes or the possible places of arrhythmia.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been increasingly utilized in various civilian and military applications such as remote sensing, border patrolling, disaster monitoring, and communication coverage extension. However, there are still prone to several cyber attacks such as GPS spoofing attacks, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and man-in-the-middle attacks to obtain their collected information or to enforce the UAVs to perform their requested actions which may damage the UAVs or their surrounding environment or even endanger the safety of human in the operation field. In this paper, we propose a trust monitoring mechanism in which a centralized unit (e.g. the ground station) regularly observe the behavior of the UAVs in terms of their motion path, their consumed energy, as well as the number of their completed tasks and measure a relative trust score for the UAVs to detect any abnormal behaviors in a real-time manner. Our simulation results show that the trust model can detect malicious UAVs, which can be under various cyber-security attacks such as flooding attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, GPS spoofing attack in real-time.

A language is constructed of a finite/infinite set of sentences composing of words. Similar to natural languages, Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, the most common noninvasive tool to study the functionality of the heart and diagnose several abnormal arrhythmias, is made up of sequences of three or four distinct waves including the P-wave, QRS complex, T-wave and U-wave. An ECG signal may contain several different varieties of each wave (e.g., the QRS complex can have various appearances). For this reason, the ECG signal is a sequence of heartbeats similar to sentences in natural languages) and each heartbeat is composed of a set of waves (similar to words in a sentence) of different morphologies. Analogous to natural language processing (NLP) which is used to help computers understand and interpret the human's natural language, it is possible to develop methods inspired by NLP to aid computers to gain a deeper understanding of Electrocardiogram signals. In this work, our goal is to propose a novel ECG analysis technique, \textit{ECG language processing (ELP)}, focusing on empowering computers to understand ECG signals in a way physicians do. We evaluated the proposed method on two tasks including the classification of heartbeats and the detection of atrial fibrillation in the ECG signals. Experimental results on three databases (i.e., PhysionNet's MIT-BIH, MIT-BIH AFIB and PhysioNet Challenge 2017 AFIB Dataset databases) reveal that the proposed method is a general idea that can be applied to a variety of biomedical applications and is able to achieve remarkable performance.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmias that affects the lives of more than 3 million people in the U.S. and over 33 million people around the world and is associated with a five-fold increased risk of stroke and mortality. like other problems in healthcare domain, artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms have been used to reliably detect AF from patients' physiological signals. The cardiologist level performance in detecting this arrhythmia is often achieved by deep learning-based methods, however, they suffer from the lack of interpretability. In other words, these approaches are unable to explain the reasons behind their decisions. The lack of interpretability is a common challenge toward a wide application of machine learning-based approaches in the healthcare which limits the trust of clinicians in such methods. To address this challenge, we propose HAN-ECG, an interpretable bidirectional-recurrent-neural-network-based approach for the AF detection task. The HAN-ECG employs three attention mechanism levels to provide a multi-resolution analysis of the patterns in ECG leading to AF. The first level, wave level, computes the wave weights, the second level, heartbeat level, calculates the heartbeat weights, and third level, window (i.e., multiple heartbeats) level, produces the window weights in triggering a class of interest. The detected patterns by this hierarchical attention model facilitate the interpretation of the neural network decision process in identifying the patterns in the signal which contributed the most to the final prediction. Experimental results on two AF databases demonstrate that our proposed model performs significantly better than the existing algorithms. Visualization of these attention layers illustrates that our model decides upon the important waves and heartbeats which are clinically meaningful in the detection task.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is a common and powerful tool to study heart function and diagnose several abnormal arrhythmias. While there have been remarkable improvements in cardiac arrhythmia classification methods, they still cannot offer acceptable performance in detecting different heart conditions, especially when dealing with imbalanced datasets. In this paper, we propose a solution to address this limitation of current classification approaches by developing an automatic heartbeat classification method using deep convolutional neural networks and sequence to sequence models. We evaluated the proposed method on the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, considering the intra-patient and inter-patient paradigms, and the AAMI EC57 standard. The evaluation results for both paradigms show that our method achieves the best performance in the literature (a positive predictive value of 96.46% and sensitivity of 100% for the category S, and a positive predictive value of 98.68% and sensitivity of 97.40% for the category F for the intra-patient scheme; a positive predictive value of 92.57% and sensitivity of 88.94% for the category S, and a positive predictive value of 99.50% and sensitivity of 99.94% for the category V for the inter-patient scheme.). Future space missions will be driven by factors such as the need for reduced cost of spacecraft without diminished performance, new services and capabilities including reconfigurability, autonomous operations, target observation with improved resolution and servicing (or proximity) operations. Small satellites, deployed as a sensor network in space, can through inter-satellite communication (ISC) enable the realization of these future goals. Developing the communication subsystem that can facilitate ISC within this distributed network of small satellites require a complex range of design trade-offs. For small satellites, the general design parameters that are to be optimized for ISC are size, mass, and power, as well as cost (SMaP-C). Novel and efficient design techniques for implementing the communication subsystem are crucial for building multiple small satellite networks with capability for achieving significant data-rates along the inter-satellite links (ISLs). In this paper, we propose an alternative approach to RF and laser ISLs for ISC among small satellites deployed as a sensor network in low Earth orbit (LEO). For short to medium range ISLs, we present an LED-based visible light communication (VLC) system that addresses the SMaP constraints, including capability for achieving significant data rates. Our research is focused on the development of the physical layer for pico-/nano class of satellites with prime consideration for the impact of solar background illumination on link performance.
