Free-space optical (FSO) communications will play an important role in the backhaul of future generation of wireless networks in order to support high data rates. Because of narrow beamwidth inherent to an optical signal, acquisition and tracking form an important component of any FSO communication system. In this study, we have analyzed the optimization of received power allocation between tracking and data channels in an FSO receiver. In this regard, we have carried out a detailed analysis of the error statistics of the centroid estimator that is used for tracking the beam with the help of an array. The objective function that is optimized (minimized) are the probability of error and the probability of outage, and the optimization of power allocation is carried out as a function of parameters such as noise power, pointing error variance, pointing error correlation coefficient, and the threshold of outage. We have analyzed the optimization concerning the lognormal and exponentiated Weibull fading scenarios as well. We learn that the optimal power allocation is a function of the received signal-to-noise ratio: a lower signal-to-noise ratio dictates that a higher fraction of received power should be diverted to the tracking channel and vice versa. In this paper, we propose a modified dynamic decode-and-forward (MoDDF) relaying protocol to meet the critical requirements for user equipment (UE) relays in next-generation cellular systems (e.g., LTE-Advanced and beyond). The proposed MoDDF realizes the fast jump-in relaying and the sequential decoding with an application of random codeset to encoding and re-encoding process at the source and the multiple UE relays, respectively. A subframe-by-subframe decoding based on the accumulated (or buffered) messages is employed to achieve energy, information, or mixed combining. Finally, possible early termination of decoding at the end user can lead to the higher spectral efficiency and more energy saving by reducing the frequency of redundant subframe transmission and decoding. These attractive features eliminate the need of directly exchanging control messages between multiple UE relays and the end user, which is an important prerequisite for the practical UE relay deployment. Outage performance of the $M$-block fading with additive white Gaussian noise (BF-AWGN) is investigated in the low-power regime. We consider delay-constrained constant-rate communications with perfect channel state information (CSI) at both the transmitter and the receiver (CSI-TR), under a short-term power constraint (STPC) and a long-term power constraint (LTPC). Subject to STPC, we show that selection diversity that allocates all the power to the strongest block is asymptotically optimal. Then, we provide a simple characterization of the outage probability in the regime of interest. We quantify the reward due to CSI-TR over the constant-rate constant-power scheme and show that this reward increases with the delay constraint. For instance, for Rayleigh fading, we find that a power gain up to 4.3 dB is achievable. Subject to LTPC, we show that the above guidelines still holds and that the outage performance improves due to the flexibility of the LTPC over the STPC. More interestingly, we prove that LTPC allows zero-outage communication even at low SNR and characterize the delay-limited capacity at low SNR in a simple form. More precisely, we establish that the delay-limited capacity scales linearly with the power constraint, for a given $M < \infty$. Our framework highlights the benefit of fading at low SNR as the delay-limited capacity may outperform the AWGN capacity. This paper studies generalized single-stream transmit beamforming employing receive array co-channel interference reduction algorithms under slow and flat fading multiuser wireless systems. The impact of imperfect prediction of channel state information for the desired user spatially uncorrelated transmit channels on the effectiveness of transmit beamforming for different interference reduction techniques is investigated. The case of over-loaded receive array with closely-spaced elements is considered, wherein it can be configured to null specified interfering sources. Both dominant interference reduction and adaptive interference reduction techniques for statistically ordered and unordered interferers powers, respectively, are thoroughly studied. The effect of outdated statistical ordering of the interferers powers on the efficiency of dominant interference reduction is studied and then compared against the adaptive interference reduction. For the system models described above, new analytical formulations for the statistics of combined signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio are presented, from which results for conventional maximum ratio transmission and single-antenna best transmit selection can be directly deduced as limiting cases. These results are then utilized to obtain quantitative measures for various performance metrics. Cooperative communications via multiple relay nodes is known to provide the benefits of increase diversity and coverage. Simultaneous transmission via multiple relays, however, requires strong coordination between nodes either in terms of slot-based transmission or distributed space–time (ST) code implementation. Dynamically selecting a single best relay out of multiple relays and then using it alone for cooperative transmission alleviates the need for this strong coordination while still reaping the benefits of increased diversity and coverage. In this paper, we consider the design of relay selection (RS) under an imperfect knowledge of long-term channel state information (CSI) at the relay nodes, and we pursue minimax optimization to arrive at a robust RS approach that promises the best guarantee on the worst-case end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We provide some intuitive examples and extensive simulation results, not only in terms of worst-case SNR performance but also in terms of average bit-error-rate (BER) performance, to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed minimax robust RS scheme. In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of “partner cooperation” based on opportunistic Decode-and-Forward with constrained partial selection and reactive relaying strategies in dual-hop cooperative Nakagami-m fading links. The source/destination, which is based on the unique knowledge of local channel state information, selects the best relay to increase the chances of cooperation in both uplink and downlink communications when the direct link is also available. After deriving new expressions for the cumulative distribution functions of the variables of interest, the outage probability of the system is obtained in closed-form. We also derive the \epsilon-outage capacity in different particular cases, and the obtained results—when the channel model is reduced to a Rayleigh fading—either are new or correspond to those previously obtained in other works. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of our analysis for a large selection of system and fading parameters and provide a new insight into the design and optimization of cooperative configurations. In this paper, we analyze the performance of adaptive modulation with single-cell multiuser scheduling over independent but not identical distributed (i.n.i.d.) Nakagami fading channels. Closed-form expressions are derived for the average channel capacity, spectral efficiency, and bit error rate (BER) for both constant-power variable-rate and variable-power variable-rate uncoded/coded M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) schemes. We also study the impact of time delay on the average BER of adaptive M-QAM. In future wireless networks, one of the use cases of interest is the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Here, IoV refers to two different functionalities, namely, serving the in-vehicle users and supporting the connected-vehicle functionalities, where both can be well provided by the transceivers installed on top of vehicles. Such dual functionality of on-vehicle transceivers implies strict rate and reliability requirements, for which one may need to communicate at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. However, IoV communication at mmWave requires up-to-date channel state information (CSI) and blockage avoidance. In this article, we incorporate the recently proposed concept of predictor antennas (PAs) into a large-scale cooperative PA (LSCPA) setup where both temporal blockages and CSI out-dating are avoided via base stations (BSs)/vehicles cooperation. Summarizing the ongoing standardization progress enabling IoV communications, we present the potential and challenges of the LSCPA setup, and compare the effect of cooperative and non-cooperative schemes on the performance of IoV links. This paper presents an asymptotic capacity analysis for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications with insufficient transmit radio frequency (RF) chains and sufficient receive RF chains, which is named as iMIMO communications. We characterize the iMIMO channel capacity by the maximum mutual information given any vector inputs subject to not only an average power constraint but also a sparsity constraint. It is proven that an optimized Gaussian mixture input distribution is capacity-achieving in the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime. The optimal mixture coefficients and the covariance matrices of the Gaussian mixtures are derived and also the corresponding asymptotic capacity. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of insufficient receive RF chains on the achievable spectral efficiency. We investigate the superiority of the capacity-achieving technique, which is an optimized non-uniform subspace modulation (NUSM), by comparing it with the best subspace selection (BSS) and the uniform subspace modulation (USM). The low-SNR asymptotic capacity of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) optical intensity channel is studied under both average and peak intensity constraints. We focus on low SNR, which can be modeled as the scenario where both constraints proportionally vanish, or where the peak constraint is held constant while the average constraint vanishes. A capacity upper bound is derived and is shown to be tight at low SNR under both scenarios. The capacity achieving input distribution at low SNR is shown to be a maximally correlated vector-binary input distribution. Consequently, the low-SNR capacity of the channel is characterized. As a byproduct, it is shown that for a channel with peak intensity constraints only, or with peak intensity constraints and individual (per aperture) average intensity constraints, a simple scheme composed of coded ON–OFF keying, spatial repetition, and maximum-ratio combining is optimal at low SNR. We consider a general selection-diversity scheme in which the $k$ th best link is selected from a number of links. We use extreme value theory to derive simple closed-form asymptotic expressions for the average throughput, effective throughput, and average bit error probability for the $k$ th best link over various channel models that are widely used to characterize fading in wireless communication systems. In this correspondence, we investigate the physical layer security for cooperative nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where both amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols are considered. More specifically, some analytical expressions are derived for secrecy outage probability (SOP) and strictly positive secrecy capacity. Results show that AF and DF almost achieve the same secrecy performance. Moreover, asymptotic results demonstrate that the SOP tends to a constant at high signal-to-noise ratio. The outage probability (OP) of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is an important metric that is used to evaluate the performance of wireless systems. One difficulty toward assessing the OP is that, in realistic scenarios, closed-form expressions cannot be derived. This is, for instance, the case of the Log-normal environment, in which evaluating the OP of the SINR amounts to computing the probability that a sum of correlated Log-normal variates exceeds a given threshold. Since such a probability does not admit a closed-form expression, it has thus far been evaluated by several approximation techniques, the accuracies of which are not guaranteed in the region of small OPs. For these regions, simulation techniques based on variance reduction algorithms are a good alternative, being quick and highly accurate for estimating rare event probabilities. This constitutes the major motivation behind this paper. More specifically, we propose a generalized hybrid importance sampling scheme, based on a combination of a mean shifting and a covariance matrix scaling, to evaluate the OP of the SINR in a Log-normal environment. This work focuses on the downlink and uplink of large-scale single-cell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems in which the base station (BS) endowed with $M$ antennas communicates with $K$ single-antenna user equipments (UEs). Particularly, we aim at reducing the complexity of the linear precoder and receiver that maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) subject to a given power constraint. To this end, we consider the asymptotic regime in which $M$ and $K$ grow large with a given ratio. Tools from random matrix theory (RMT) are then used to compute, in closed form, accurate approximations for the parameters of the optimal precoder and receiver, when imperfect channel state information (modeled by the generic Gauss–Markov formulation form) is available at the BS. The asymptotic analysis allows us to derive the asymptotically optimal linear precoder and receiver that are characterized by a lower complexity (due to the dependence on the large scale components of the channel) and, possibly, by a better resilience to imperfect channel state information. However, the implementation of both is still challenging as it requires fast inversions of large matrices in every coherence period. To overcome this issue, we apply the truncated polynomial expansion (TPE) technique to the precoding and receiving vector of each UE and make use of RMT to determine the optimal weighting coefficients on a per-UE basis that asymptotically solve the max–min SINR problem. Numerical results are used to validate the asymptotic analysis in the finite system regime and to show that the proposed TPE transceivers efficiently mimic the optimal ones, while requiring much lower computational complexity. Multi-channel (MC) optical wireless communication (OWC) systems employing wave-division multiplexing for outdoors free-space optical communications, or multi-user time-division multiple access for indoors visible-light communications, e.g., can be modeled as parallel channels. Multi-input multi-output OWC systems can also be transformed, possibly with some performance loss, to parallel channels using pre-/post-coding. Studying the performance of such MC-OWC systems requires characterizing the capacity of the underlying parallel channels. In this paper, upper and lower bounds on the capacity of constant parallel OWC channels with a total average intensity constraint are derived. Then, this paper focuses on finding intensity allocations that maximize the lower bounds given channel-state information at the transmitter (CSIT). Due to its nonconvexity, the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions are used to describe a list of candidate allocations. Instead searching exhaustively for the best solution, low-complexity near-optimal algorithms are proposed. The resulting optimized lower bound nearly coincides with capacity at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Under a quasi-static channel model and in the absence of CSIT, outage probability upper and lower bounds are derived. Those bounds also meet at high SNR, thus characterizing the outage capacity in this regime. Finally, the results are extended to a system with both average and peak intensity constraints. In this paper, we derive the exact statistical characteristics of the maximum and the minimum of two modified double generalized gamma variates in closed form in terms of Meijer's G-function, Fox's H-function, the extended generalized bivariate Meijer's G-function, and H-function, in addition to simple closed-form asymptotic results in terms of elementary functions. Then, we rely on these new results to present the performance analysis of 1) a dual-branch free-space optical selection combining (FSO SC) diversity and 2) a dual-hop (DH) FSO relay transmission system over double generalized gamma fading channels with the impact of pointing errors. In this paper, the energy efficiency (EE) of multihop relaying over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels is investigated. The “consumption factor” (CF), which is adopted as a metric to evaluate the EE, is derived for both amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying strategies. Then, based on the obtained expressions, we propose a power-allocation (PA) strategy maximizing the CF. In addition, a suboptimal low-complexity PA algorithm is proposed and analyzed, and the obtained PA scheme is compared in terms of EE with other PA schemes from the literature. Analysis of the average binary error probabilities (ABEP) and average capacity (AC) of wireless communications systems over generalized fading channels have been considered separately in past years. This paper introduces a novel moment generating function (MGF)-based unified expression for the ABEP and AC of single and multiple link communications with maximal ratio combining. In addition, this paper proposes the hyper-Fox's H fading model as a unified fading distribution of a majority of the well-known generalized fading environments. As such, the authors offer a generic unified performance expression that can be easily calculated, and that is applicable to a wide variety of fading scenarios. In this paper, we address the finite Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) of the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wiretap channel, where a Zero-Forcing (ZF) transmit scheme, that intends to send the secret information in the orthogonal space of the eavesdropper channel, is used. First, we introduce the secrecy multiplexing gain at finite-SNR that generalizes the definition at high-SNR. Then, we provide upper and lower bounds on the outage probability under secrecy constraint, from which secrecy diversity gain estimates of ZF are derived. Through asymptotic analysis, we show that the upper bound underestimates the secrecy diversity gain, whereas the lower bound is tight at high-SNR, and thus its related diversity gain estimate is equal to the actual asymptotic secrecy diversity gain of the MIMO wiretap channel. Unified exact ergodic capacity results for L-branch coherent diversity combiners including equal-gain combining (EGC) and maximal-ratio combining (MRC) are not known. This paper develops a novel generic framework for the capacity analysis of L-branch EGC/MRC over generalized fading channels. The framework is used to derive new results for the gamma-shadowed generalized Nakagami-m fading model which can be a suitable model for the fading environments encountered by high frequency (60 GHz and above) communications. This paper derives the asymptotic distribution of the normalized $k$ -th maximum order statistics of a sequence of non-central chi-square random variables with non-identical non-centrality parameters. We demonstrate the utility of these results in characterizing the signal-to-noise ratio in three different applications in wireless communication systems where the statistics of the $k$ -th maximum channel power over Rician fading links are of interest. Furthermore, we derive simple expressions for the asymptotic outage probability, average throughput, achievable throughput, and average bit error probability. The performance of multiple-antenna diversity systems in which the receiver combines signal replicas per threshold-based maximal ratio combining (MRC) and transmitter uses only a single antenna according to receive combined signal strength is studied. The impact of imperfect channel estimation and the effect of phase and time misalignments between desired and undesired signals are implicitly investigated. It is assumed that the desired signal replicas and interfering signals undergo statistically independent flat Rayleigh fading. The analysis is applicable for arbitrary transmit antenna selection, based either on receive combined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or receive combined signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). For the scenario of identical multiple-antenna channels, closed-form analytical results for the combined SNR statistics and some performance measures are first presented. The SNR-based and SINR-based selection algorithms are then employed to obtain expressions for the distribution of combined SINR and outage probability performance, which are applicable for different statistical models of interfering signals. The adopted system models herein as well as the analytical development add enhancements on many existing results, and can be used to study the performance of different architectures under various channel conditions when the implementation complexity is of interest. Mobile users with single antennas can still take advantage of spatial diversity through cooperative space-time encoded transmission. In this paper, we consider a scheme in which a relay chooses to cooperate only if its source-relay channel is of an acceptable quality and we evaluate the usefulness of relaying when the source acts blindly and ignores the decision of the relays whether they may cooperate or not. In our study, we consider the regenerative relays in which the decisions to cooperate are based on a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold and consider the impact of the possible erroneously detected and transmitted data at the relays. We derive the end-to-end bit-error rate (BER) expression and its approximation for binary phase-shift keying modulation and look at two power allocation strategies between the source and the relays in order to minimize the end-to-end BER at the destination for high SNR. The capacity of the free-space optical channel is studied. A new recursive approach for bounding the capacity of the channel based on sphere-packing is proposed. This approach leads to new capacity upper bounds for a channel with a peak intensity constraint or an average intensity constraint. Under an average constraint only, the derived bound is tighter than an existing sphere-packing bound derived earlier by Farid and Hranilovic. The achievable rate of a truncated-Gaussian input distribution is also derived. It is shown that under both average and peak constraints, this achievable rate and the sphere-packing bounds are within a small gap at high SNR, leading to a simple high-SNR capacity approximation. Simple fitting functions that capture the best known achievable rate for the channel are provided. This paper advocates a distributed role selection strategy to coordinate two-way relaying transmissions among three cooperative nodes. For such, the local channel state information comparison and decision feedback mechanism are merged into classical analog network coding (ANC) and time division broadcast (TDBC) protocols such that the cooperative role of each node can be designated in a distributed fashion. We refer to this distributed role selection rule as d-ROSE. In both ANC-based and TDBC-based two-way relaying scenarios, strict proof for the equivalence of d-ROSE and optimal ROSE is given, which indicates that albeit the different form, their final role decision is essentially the same. Outage analysis for the d-ROSE strategy is carried out and the scaling law of the system outage behavior at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is characterized, which manifests that d-ROSE can enhance the system diversity gain to one-order higher relative to the ANC and TDBC protocols. It is also shown that d-ROSE can reduce the signaling overhead upto 60% to perform the outage-optimal role selection. Finally, the impacts of node placement on the outage performance as well as the average signaling overhead of d-ROSE are numerically evaluated and some useful conclusions are drawn. In this paper, we analyze the outage behavior of decode-and-forward (DF) relaying in the context of selective two-way cooperative systems. First, a new relay selection metric is proposed to take into consideration both transmission rates and instantaneous link conditions between cooperating nodes. Afterward, the outage probability of the proposed system is derived for Nakagami- $m$ fading channels in the case when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available and then extended to the more realistic scenario where the available CSI is outdated due to fast fading. New expressions for the outage probability are obtained, and the impact of imperfect CSI on the performance is evaluated. Illustrative numerical results, Monte Carlo simulations, and comparisons with similar approaches are presented to assess the accuracy of our analytical derivations and confirm the performance gain of the proposed scheme. Device-to-device (D2D) communication enables the user equipments (UEs) located in close proximity to bypass the cellular base stations (BSs) and directly connect to each other, and thereby, offload traffic from the cellular infrastructure. D2D communication can improve spatial frequency reuse and energy efficiency in cellular networks. This paper presents a comprehensive and tractable analytical framework for D2D-enabled uplink cellular networks with a flexible mode selection scheme along with truncated channel inversion power control. The developed framework is used to analyze and understand how the underlaying D2D communication affects the cellular network performance. Bit error rate (BER) and outage probability for amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems with two different channel estimation methods, disintegrated channel estimation and cascaded channel estimation, using pilot-aided maximum likelihood method in slowly fading Rayleigh channels are derived. Based on the BERs, the optimal values of pilot power under the total transmitting power constraints at the source and the optimal values of pilot power under the total transmitting power constraints at the relay are obtained, separately. Moreover, the optimal power allocation between the pilot power at the source, the pilot power at the relay, the data power at the source and the data power at the relay are obtained when their total transmitting power is fixed. Numerical results show that the derived BER expressions match with the simulation results. They also show that the proposed systems with optimal power allocation outperform the conventional systems without power allocation under the same other conditions. We study the secrecy capacity of fast fading channels under imperfect main channel (between the transmitter and the legitimate receiver) estimation at the transmitter. Lower and upper bounds on the ergodic secrecy capacity are derived for a class of independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) fading channels. The achievable rate follows from a standard wiretap code in which a simple on–off power control is employed along with a Gaussian input. The upper bound is obtained using an appropriate correlation scheme of the main and eavesdropper channels and is the best known upper bound so far. The upper and lower bounds coincide with recently derived ones in case of perfect main CSI. Furthermore, the upper bound is tight in case of no main CSI, where the secrecy capacity is equal to zero. Asymptotic analysis at high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is also given. At high SNR, we show that the capacity is bounded by providing upper and lower bounds that depend on the channel estimation error. At low SNR, however, we prove that the secrecy capacity is asymptotically equal to the capacity of the main channel as if there were no secrecy constraint. Numerical results are provided for i.i.d. Higher order statistics (HOS) of the channel capacity provide useful information regarding the level of reliability of signal transmission at a particular rate. In this paper, we propose a novel and unified analysis, which is based on the moment-generating function (MGF) approach, to efficiently and accurately compute the HOS of the channel capacity for amplify-and-forward (AF) multihop transmission over generalized fading channels. In this paper, we study the outage performance of an amplify-and-forward (AF)-based two-way relaying (TWR) system with multiple relays where a single relay selection is performed based on outdated channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we propose a single relay selection scheme in AF-based TWR system under outdated CSI conditions. With this policy, we offer a statistical analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio per hop and analyze the outage probability with asymmetric outage thresholds based on CSI-assisted AF protocol. Additionally, we provide the exact and asymptotic expressions based on the provided statistical/joint statistical analyses of a dual-hop AF transmission. Hardware impairment is inevitable in many wireless systems. It is particularly severe in low-cost applications due to the imperfect components used. In this paper, the channel estimation and non-coherent detection problems of hardware impaired signals are studied for a single-carrier, single-antenna and single-hop system. Specifically, three different cases are investigated: signals with additive distortion only, signals with in-phase and quadrature imbalance only, and signals with both impairments. The maximum likelihood and Gaussian approximation methods are used to derive the new non-coherent detectors for amplitude modulated signals, while the maximum likelihood and moment-based methods are employed to design the new channel estimators for all signals. Numerical results show that the new non-coherent detectors outperform the existing non-coherent detectors in the presence of hardware impairment. The performance gain can be as high as 8 dB. They also show that the new channel estimators have much higher accuracy than the existing estimator. Cooperative relay technology has recently been introduced into cognitive radio (CR) networks to enhance the network capacity, scalability, and reliability of end-to-end communication. In this paper, we investigate an underlay cognitive network where the quality of service (QoS) of the secondary link is maintained by triggering an opportunistic regenerative relaying once it falls under an unacceptable level. Analysis is conducted for two schemes, referred to as the channel-state information (CSI)-based and fault-tolerant schemes, respectively, where different amounts of CSI were considered. We first provide the exact cumulative distribution function (cdf) of the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over each hop with colocated relays. Then, the cdf's are used to determine a very accurate closed-form expression for the outage probability for a transmission rate R. In a high-SNR region, a floor of the secondary outage probability occurs, and we derive its corresponding expression. In this paper, a transmit antenna selection scheme, which is based on shadowing side information, is investigated. In this scheme, the selected single transmit antenna provides the highest shadowing coefficient between a transmitter and a receiver. By the proposed technique, the frequency of the usage of the feedback channel from the receiver to the transmitter and channel estimation complexity at the receiver can be reduced. We study the performance of our proposed technique, and in the analysis, we consider an independent but not identically distributed generalized-K composite fading model. More specifically, exact and closed-form expressions for the outage probability, the moment-generating function, the moments of signal-to-noise ratio, and the average symbol error probability (SEP) are derived. In addition, asymptotic outage probability and SP expressions are also presented to investigate the diversity order and the array gain. Multiuser switched-diversity scheduling schemes were recently proposed in order to overcome the heavy feedback requirements of conventional opportunistic scheduling schemes by applying a threshold-based, distributed, and ordered scheduling mechanism. The main idea behind these schemes is that slight reduction in the prospected multiuser diversity gains is an acceptable trade-off for great savings in terms of required channel-state-information feedback messages. In this work, we characterize the achievable rate region of multiuser switched diversity systems and compare it with the rate region of full feedback multiuser diversity systems. We propose also a novel proportional fair multiuser switched-based scheduling scheme and we demonstrate that it can be optimized using a practical and distributed method to obtain the feedback thresholds. We finally demonstrate by numerical examples that switched-diversity scheduling schemes operate within 0.3 bits/sec/Hz from the ultimate network capacity of full feedback systems in Rayleigh fading conditions. This paper investigates the performance of two low-complexity combining schemes, which are based on one- or two-phase observation, to mitigate multipath fading in dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying systems. For the one-phase-based combining, a single-antenna station is assumed to relay information from a multiple-antenna transmitter to a multiple-antenna receiver, and the activation of the receive antennas is adaptively performed based on the second-hop statistics, regardless of the first-hop conditions. On the other hand, the two-phase-based combining suggests using multiple single-antenna stations between the multiple-antenna transmitter and the single-antenna receiver, where the suitable set of active relays is identified according to the precombining end-to-end fading conditions. To facilitate comparisons between the two schemes, formulations for the statistics of the combined signal-to-noise ratio and some performance measures are presented. Minimum-selection generalized selection combining (MS-GSC) has been proposed as a power-saving variant of conventional generalized selection combining (GSC). Existing performance results of this scheme are limited to interference-free environments under multipath fading. This paper addresses the scenario when the received desired signal on each diversity branch is corrupted by multiple interfering signals and background noise, wherein desired and undesired signals undergo mutually independent Rayleigh fading. In the absence of perfect tracking of the instantaneous interference power on diversity branches, the adaptation thresholds that are set on the combined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to enhance either the spectral efficiency or power efficiency in noise-limited environments may not guarantee the target performance. This paper aims to study the effect of cochannel interference on the performance of bandwidth- and power-efficient SNR-based MS-GSC. Through the analysis, new analytical results for some important performance measures of adaptive MS-GSC schemes are presented. In this paper, we consider multicarrier systems with multiple transmit antennas under a power-balancing constraint. Applying transmit antenna selection and discrete rate-adaptive modulation using M-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) according to the channel variation per subcarrier, we develop an optimal transmit antenna selection scheme in terms of the maximum spectral efficiency, where all the possible groupings for sending the same information-bearing signals in a group of subcarriers are searched, and the groups of subcarriers for providing the frequency diversity gain are formed. In addition, we propose a suboptimal method for reducing the computational complexity of the optimal method. The suboptimal scheme considers only the subcarriers under outage, and these subcarriers are sequentially combined until the required signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is met. Numerical results show that the proposed suboptimal method with diversity combining outperforms the optimal antenna selection without diversity combining, as introduced in the work of Sandell and Coon, particularly for low-SNR regions, and offers the spectral efficiency close to the optimal method with diversity combining while maintaining lower complexity. A free-space optical communication system using non-mode-selective photonic lantern (PL) based coherent receiver is studied. Based on the simulation of photon distribution, the power distribution at the single-mode fiber end of the PL is quantitatively described as a truncated Gaussian distribution over a simplex. The signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), bit-error rate (BER), and outage probability of PL based receiver using selection combining (SC), equal-gain combining (EGC), and maximal-ratio combining (MRC) over Gamma-Gamma turbulence channels are analyzed and compared with the single-mode fiber (SMF) receiver and multimode fiber (MMF) receiver. We demonstrate that EGC is the most suitable combining for PL based receiver because the PL power distribution has limited influence on the BER and outage probability when EGC is used and can greatly affect the BER and outage probability when SC is used. Numerical results show that PL based receiver with EGC requires 6 dB less SNR than the SMF receiver and 5.5 dB less SNR than the MMF receiver at BER of 10−6 in moderate turbulence. Terahertz (THz) wireless technology is envisioned to enable terabit-per-second (Tbps) and secure transmissions in sixth-generation (6G) communication networks and has attracted attention from academia and industry in recent years. Because the transmission range of THz radios is restricted compared to that of microwave radios, frequency reuses in the THz band become much more flexible and even possible among transceiver pairs in close proximity. However, without appropriate spatial arrangement and coordination, the frequency reuse in the THz band can also lead to severe co-channel interference and result in a low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) or a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), which finally degrades signal detection and network reliability. To thoroughly study the co-channel interference in the THz band, we model the co-channel interference by the compound channel model and analyze it in detail. The adopted channel model captures the key features of THz communication, such as, spreading loss, molecular absorption loss, and dynamic shadowing, which is much different and complicated than those used in the low-frequency band. The resulted SINR and SIR are investigated by approximating the sum of co-channel interference as a gamma distribution. The generalized analytical results are also reduced to specialized forms for two special cases, i.e., the single-interferer case and the case of multiple independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) interferers. Due to the generalized nature of the THz interference model constructed in this paper, the results play a meaningful role in practical implementation and can be easily extended to advanced performance analyses for THz communication systems. In this correspondence, we consider a mixed radio-frequency/underwater wireless optical communication (RF-UWOC) system with a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward relay, where the RF link experiences a Generalized-K distribution while the UWOC link undergoes a mixture Exponential-Generalized Gamma distribution. In this work, we present a unified framework for the performance analysis of dual-hop underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems with amplify-and-forward fixed gain relays in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradients. Operating under either heterodyne detection or intensity modulation with direct detection, the UWOC is modeled by the unified mixture Exponential-Generalized Gamma distribution that we have proposed based on an experiment conducted in an indoor laboratory setup and has been shown to provide an excellent fit with the measured data under the considered lab channel scenarios. More specifically, we derive the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in exact closed-form in terms of the bivariate Fox’s H function. Based on this CDF expression, we present novel results for the fundamental performance metrics such as the outage probability, the average bit-error rate (BER) for various modulation schemes, and the ergodic capacity. Additionally, very tight asymptotic results for the outage probability and the average BER at high SNR are obtained in terms of simple functions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dual-hop UWOC system can effectively mitigate the short range and both temperature gradients and air bubbles induced turbulences, as compared to the single UWOC link. In this article, we investigate the performance of a multiuser integrated satellite-terrestrial relay network (ISTRN) with the threshold-based decode-and-forward protocol, where the satellite-relay link undergoes shadowed-Rician (SR) fading, while the relay-user links experience Nakagami-m fading. We first formulate a constrained optimization problem with an objective to maximize the system capacity in order to determine the beamforming weight vectors at the relay and thereby develop two multiuser scheduling schemes, namely, best user scheduling and user fairness scheduling. Then, we present a closed-form expression for the probability density function (PDF) of the square sum of independent and identically distributed SR random variables, which is more accurate and concise than the existing solutions. Based on the new PDF results, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity of the considered network using the two scheduling schemes. Furthermore, the asymptotic OP expressions at high signal-to-noise ratio are also deduced to reveal the asymptotic behavior of the considered ISTRN. In this paper, we focus on the downlink ergodic sum rate of a single-cell large-scale multiuser MIMO system in which the base station employs $N$ antennas to communicate with $K$ single-antenna user equipments (UEs). A regularized zero-forcing (RZF) scheme is used for precoding under the assumption that each UE uses a specific power and each link forms a spatially correlated MIMO Rician fading channel. The analysis is conducted assuming that $N$ and $K$ grow large with a given ratio and perfect channel state information is available at the base station. New results from random matrix theory and large system analysis are used to compute an asymptotic expression of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio as a function of system parameters, spatial correlation matrix, and Rician factor. Numerical results are used to validate the accuracy of asymptotic approximations in the finite system regime and to evaluate the performance under different operating conditions. In this paper, we analyze the secrecy performance of the decode-and-forward (DF) relay system in generalized- $K$ fading channels. In a typical four-node communications model, a source ($S$) sends confidential information to a destination ($D$) via a relay ($R$) using DF strategy in two time slots, while an eavesdropper ($E$) wants to overhear the information from $S$ to $D$ over generalized- $K$ fading channels. To be more realistic, we assume that $E$ can receive the signals of two time slots, and there is no direct link between $S$ and $D$ because of heavy fading. Based on those assumptions, we derive closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) by using a tight approximate probability density function of the generalized- $K$ model. Furthermore, asymptotic expressions for the SOP and ESC are also derived in the high signal-to-noise ratio region, not only because we can get some insights about SOP and ESC, but also because expressions for SOP and ESC can be simplified significantly. The single relay system is subsequently extended into a multi-relay system, where the asymptotic SOP analysis of three proposed relay selection strategies is investigated. Moreover, the security-reliability tradeoff analysis in the multi-relay system is also presented given that $S$ adopts a constant code rate. The characterization of fundamental performance bounds of many-to-many communication systems in which participating nodes are active in an intermittent way is one of the major challenges in communication theory. In order to address this issue, we introduce the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) three-way channel (3WC) with an intermittent node and study its degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region and sum-DoF. We devise a non-adaptive encoding scheme based on zero-forcing, interference alignment, and erasure coding, and show its DoF region (and thus sum-DoF) optimality for non-intermittent 3WCs and its sum-DoF optimality for (node-) intermittent 3WCs. However, we show by example that in general some DoF tuples in the intermittent 3WC can only be achieved by adaptive schemes such as decode-forward relaying. This shows that non-adaptive encoding is sufficient for the non-intermittent 3WC and for the sum-DoF of intermittent 3WCs but adaptive encoding is necessary for the DoF region of intermittent 3WCs. The capacity of fading channels under peak and average power constraints in the low-SNR regime is investigated. We show that the capacity scales essentially as $C \approx A \ \text{SNR} \int _{1- \frac{1}{A}}^1 F^{-1}(t)dt$ , where $A$ is the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and $F(\cdot)$ is the cumulative distribution function of the fading channel. We also prove that an On–Off power scheme is sufficient to asymptotically achieve the capacity. Furthermore, by considering the variable PAPR scenario, we generalize the scalability of the capacity and derive the asymptotic expression for the capacity in the low-SNR regime. An optical wireless intensity-modulation direct-detection multiple-input multiple-output communication system is considered. The performance of $M$ -PAM rate-1 direct current offset space-time block codes is studied in terms of average worst-case pairwise error probability (WC-PEP) in quasi-static channels. It is shown that within this code class, the average WC-PEP is minimized by repetition coding (RC) under both electrical and optical individual power constraints, irrespective of channel statistics. This agrees with previously published results related to ON–OFF keying RC. This is further extended to sum power constraints, where it is shown that spatial beamforming minimizes the average WC-PEP within this code class, which simplifies to RC if the channel matrix has independent and indentically distributed columns and a sum electrical power constraint. Under a sum optical power constraint, this also holds true at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but not at low SNR. Generally, the time dimension of this code class is redundant from an average WC-PEP perspective. Numerical results are provided to support the theoretical findings and to show that the average WC-PEP leads to a good approximation of the actual error probability at high SNR. We analyze a secure dual-hop mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) downlink simultaneous wireless information and power transfer system. The FSO link and all RF links experience Gamma–Gamma, independent, and identical Nakagami- $m$ fading, respectively. We analyze the effects of atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, detection technology, path loss, and energy harvesting on secrecy performance. Signal-to-noise ratios at both the legitimate and illegitimate receivers are not independent since they are both simultaneously influenced by the FSO link. We derive the closed-form expression of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) as well as the asymptotic result for SOP when signal-to-noise ratios at relay and legitimate destinations tend to infinity. Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to verify the accuracy of our analysis. The results show that the secrecy diversity order (SDO) depends on the fading parameter of the relay-destination link and the number of the destination’s antennas. Small-cell network is a promising solution to high video traffic. However, with the increasing number of devices, it cannot meet the requirements from all users. Thus, we propose a caching device-to-device (D2D) scheme for small-cell networks, in which caching placement and D2D establishment are combined. In this scheme, a limited cache is equipped at each user, and the popular files can be prefetched at the local cache during off-peak period. Thus, dense D2D connections can be established during peak time aided by these cached users, which will reduce the backhaul pressure significantly. To do this, first, an optimal caching scheme is formulated according to the popularity to maximize the total offloading probability of the D2D system. Thus, most edge users can obtain their required video files from the caches at users nearby, instead from the small-cell base station. Then, the sum rate of D2D links is analyzed in different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. Furthermore, to maximize the throughput of D2D links with low complexity, three D2D-link scheduling schemes are proposed with the help of bipartite graph theory and Kuhn-Munkres algorithm for low, high, and medium SNRs, respectively.
