This article, published in the Chemistry of Natural Compounds journal, discusses the discovery of a new species of Michelia plant, M. compressa var. lanyuensis, found only in Lanyu, Taiwan. The focus of the article is on the chemical analysis of the plant and the isolation of sixteen compounds from its flowers. The antioxidative activity of these compounds was tested, and three of them, o-hydroxybenzoic acid, N-trans-caffeoyltyramine, and N-cis-caffeoyltyramine, showed strong antioxidative properties. The article provides detailed information on the collection, identification, extraction, and isolation processes used, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the compounds. The experiments conducted to evaluate the antioxidant abilities of the compounds included testing their ability to scavenge free radicals, chelate metal ions, and exhibit reducing power. The results indicated that the three mentioned compounds exhibited significant antioxidative activity. The investigation was supported by a grant from Yuan's General Hospital.
