A simple numerical method has been proposed to compute dispersion for single-mode graded-index fibers with power law profile. The results so obtained are in excellent agreement with those obtained by more complicated methods proposed earlier. It has been shown that there two core radii exist at which dispersion becomes zero. With this method the effect of on-axis dip on these two zero-dispersion core radii have been investigated. A recently proposed single-parameter variational approximation for the LP01 mode has also been utilized to study these effects. The results obtained by the variational method are in excellent agreement with those obtained from the proposed numerical method. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
