The Pampean flat slab in central Chile and Argentina is characterized by the inland migration and subsequent cessation of arc volcanism since the mid‐Miocene. Slab flattening also affects the distribution and number of intermediate‐depth earthquakes and the evolution of the overlying continental thermal structure. In this study, we combine thermal‐mechanical models with petrological models to examine temporal changes in pressure, temperature, and composition during flat‐slab subduction and estimate water carrying capacity, predicted melt distributions and predicted changes in melt composition. Model results indicate that the present‐day flattened Nazca plate carries water to ∼700 km inland from the trench and could cause flux melting if the material above the slab remains fertile. Observed slab seismicity matches areas where hydrated materials have ∼>3 wt% H2O in the oceanic crust and mantle lithosphere. Seismicity increases as slab water carrying capacity decreases (slab dehydration). As P‐T conditions and compositions of the rock trapped above the slab change during slab flattening, flux melting switches from a peridotite‐dominated early phase to a combined mid‐ocean ridge basalt/eclogite and peridotite melting at ∼8 Ma. The results provide broad consistency with known earthquake distributions, seismic velocities, and observed temporal and spatial changes in volcanic patterns above the Pampean flat slab and point toward the role of melt depletion in the decrease and ultimate cessation of arc volcanism in this region. Seismic nests (or clusters) are typically defined as regions of high seismic activity at intermediate depths that do not move over time and are not associated with volcanic activity at the surface (e.g. Zarifi and Havskov, 2003; Zarifi et al., 2007; Prieto et al., 2012). In this study, we focus on a seismic nest located in central Peru beneath the Amazon basin city of Pucallpa. The location of this nest is just beyond the eastern-most extent of the Peruvian flat slab, similar to the settings of two other South American clusters, the Bucaramanga and Pipanaco nests. While the Pucallpa nest is visible in the figures of many earlier papers on intermediate depth South American seismicity, it has not to our knowledge been described as a seismic nest before. We present the first detailed description of the Pucallpa nest, compare it to other established nests, and discuss its implications for our understanding of the Peruvian flat slab. Our results indicate that the Pucallpa nest demarcates the northern margin of a sag in the horizontally subducting Nazca plate in central Peru. The position of the nest along the projected location of the downgoing Mendaña fracture zone is consistent with local variations in b-values and could help to explain both the nest's genesis and the co-located change in slab geometry. The nest is also spatially well correlated with the northern margin of the thick-skinned Shira Mountains and with the high heat flow associated with the Agua Caliente dome (Hermoza et al., 2006; Navarro Comet, 2018). Further study is needed to understand the effects of the complex Peruvian slab geometry on the formation of thick skinned deformation and heat flow anomalies on the overriding South American continent. • We present information on the previously undescribed Pucallpa nest in central Peru. • The location of the Pucallpa nest is at the eastern edge of the Peruvian flat slab. • The Pucallpa Nest comprises two legs with different source characteristics. • The nest is likely affected by both slab pull and the Mendaña fracture zone. • The nest aids our understanding of the Peru flat slab geometry and genesis. Flat-slab subduction occurs when the descending plate becomes horizontal at some depth before resuming its descent into the mantle. It is often proposed as a mechanism for the uplifting of deep crustal rocks ('thick-skinned' deformation) far from plate boundaries, and for causing unusual patterns of volcanism, as far back as the Proterozoic eon. For example, the formation of the expansive Rocky Mountains and the subsequent voluminous volcanism across much of the western USA has been attributed to a broad region of flat-slab subduction beneath North America that occurred during the Laramide orogeny (80-55 million years ago). Here we study the largest modern flat slab, located in Peru, to better understand the processes controlling the formation and extent of flat slabs. We present new data that indicate that the subducting Nazca Ridge is necessary for the development and continued support of the horizontal plate at a depth of about 90 kilometres. By combining constraints from Rayleigh wave phase velocities with improved earthquake locations, we find that the flat slab is shallowest along the ridge, while to the northwest of the ridge, the slab is sagging, tearing, and re-initiating normal subduction. On the basis of our observations, we propose a conceptual model for the temporal evolution of the Peruvian flat slab in which the flat slab forms because of the combined effects of trench retreat along the Peruvian plate boundary, suction, and ridge subduction. We find that while the ridge is necessary but not sufficient for the formation of the flat slab, its removal is sufficient for the flat slab to fail. This provides new constraints on our understanding of the processes controlling the beginning and end of the Laramide orogeny and other putative episodes of flat-slab subduction. Most flat-slab subduction regions are marked by an absence of arc volcanism, which is consistent with closure of the hot mantle wedge as the subducting plate flattens below the continent. Farther inland, low surface heat flow is observed, which is generally attributed to cooling of the continent by the underlying flat slab. However, modern flat slabs have only been in place for <20 Ma, and it is unclear whether there has been sufficient time for cooling to occur. We use numerical models to assess temporal variations in continental thermal structure during flat-slab subduction. Our models show that the flat slab leads to continental cooling on timescales of tens of millions of years. Cool slab temperatures must diffuse through the continental lithosphere, resulting in a delay between slab emplacement and surface cooling. Therefore, the timescales primarily depend on the flat-slab depth with shallower slabs resulting in shorter timescales. The magnitude of cooling increases for a shallow or long-lived flat slab, old subducting plate, and fast convergence rates. For regions with flat slabs at 45-70 km depth (e.g., Mexico and Peru), shallow continental cooling initiates 5-10 Ma after slab emplacement, and low surface heat flow in these regions is largely explained by the presence of the flat slab. However, for the Pampean region in Chile, with an ~100-km-deep slab, our models predict that conductive cooling has not yet affected the surface heat flow. The low heat flow observed requires additional processes such as advective cooling from the infiltration of fluids released through dehydration of the flat slab. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
