A probabilistic slope stability assessment under seismic conditions was conducted based on the generalized Hoek-Brown criterion. The slopes on the left bank of the Mzymta River were investigated in this study. The failure probabilities were presented for various slope angles. Probabilistic analysis revealed the dependence of Hoek-Brown parameters on safety factor. The results show that the biggest influence factor for slope stability is the geological strength index (GSI), i.e., the safety factor depends on rock mass structures.

The slope stability evaluation using the generalized Hoek–Brown criterion and regarding the scale effect has been implemented in terms of the Chaarat gold project. Furthermore, the probabilistic assessment and sensitivity analysis are performed. Slope failure probabilities are determined, and the slope stability factors are obtained as functions of the slope height and angle. The slope stability estimation based on classified approach considering the scale effect, including GSI rating and probabilistic analysis is tested in rock slopes. Slope stability is mainly governed by variability of the Geological Strength Index related with the scale effect.

The development of Stoylensky iron ore opencast mine during the 50 years is accompanied by the extraction of huge masses of rocks and ores, that radically changes the stress-strain state of the array and the formation of a technogenic aquifer. The long-term quarry exploitation has a result of progressive development of engineering-geological processes: scree, landslides, creeps, suffusion. The development of processes initiated by technological works has a progressive space-time character. The solution of problem of the open pit slope stability which provides accident-free conducting of mining operations at long-term development of the field, is based on modern methodology of calculations. The angles optimization algorithm of slopes staking on Stoylensky iron ore open cast mine and the calculation of the coefficient of stability by different methods with the consideration of the anisotropy of strength properties and fracture density of the solid rock, have been suggested.

This study sought to assess the probabilistic stability of slope analysis under seismic conditions in the middle of the Mzymta River Valley in Russia's Greater Sochi. In probabilistic analysis, almost all input parameters can be assigned a probability distribution; however, the seismic coefficient probability distribution has been difficult to define in previous studies. This study aims to assign a probability distribution to the seismic coefficient based on seismogram acceleration distribution. The study showed that seismogram-based probabilistic analysis is a feasible way to assess slope stability.

The quantity slope stability assessment is an organization based on the engineering, geological, and geophysical investigations’ analysis. The geomechanical slope’s models creation realized along with stability assessment for slopes in natural conditions and in conditions of one estimated geological element soaking and thawing. Morgenstern–Price, Bishop’s method, and Janbu’s method were the main in stability assessment. The estimation analysis allows concluding that there are two main mechanisms of sliding processes on the slope. In the first case, landslide dislocations occur in the embankment’s body. The second mechanism bases on the assumption of one estimated geological element soaking and thawing. In this case, sliding dislocations cover the whole embankment. The embankment’s displacement comes along frozen moistening loams (main straining horizon (MSH)). This main straining horizon is the base for made ground. In addition, displacement may occur because of infiltration of the surface water along well-filtering macadam in warm period. The main sliding factors at the territory are significant relief energy, low strength properties of soils during it soaking and thawing, artificial cooperation. Fine probability sliding process activation predetermines the necessity of design and engineering protection measurements organization.

The article is presented in the framework of the IPL-238 project. The article is concerned with stability assessment problems of historical structures located on steep slopes of the gullies and rivers in Nizhny Novgorod City. Churches, towers, walls, and monasteries that interact with the geological environment are represented as historical natural and technical systems (HNTS). The formation and development features of slope deformations and the results of slopes’ stability calculations are described. The necessity of using modern slope stability assessment methods due to the slow but steady increase in landslide hazard for the historical and cultural heritage objects of Nizhny Novgorod, is proved. Stability calculations for the landslide-prone slopes where the Dudin and the Annunciation monasteries are located are presented.

Three-dimensional analysis is an important and actively developing area in calculating the stability of slopes. The work was based on the results of the stability analysis of the landslide slope on the left side of the Kuban river valley above the Krasnogorsk hydropower station. The calculations were performed using the limit equilibrium methods in the three-dimensional formulation of the problem, taking into account the seismic effect. In this paper seismic effects were taken into account using the pseudostatic method. Based on the performed mathematical modelling it was shown, that direction of seismic impact changes not only the safety factor but also the spatial position of the potential landslide massif. This study proves the importance of three-dimensional calculations in the development of engineering protection measures against landslide processes.
