Late-month storms delivered drought-easing precipitation across the Southwest, while early-season snowpack languished in the Northwest amid an extended spell of mild, mostly dry weather. However, little of snow was especially powdery, so the monthly snowfall of 23.7 inches, while above normal, was not high and several recent Novembers have brought more snow. As Northeastern rain made a transition to snow showers, Newark netted a daily record snowfall (1.0 inch) for December 18. Much of this mountain snow was poststorm, as strong high pressure and winds from the northwest moved in from the Ohio Valley, creating upslope (mountain generated) snow showers.
