The article reports on the ill effects of converting the unilateral tolerances into goalpost tolerances. Goalpost tolerance is a method of manufacturing products within a dimension between two limits acting as a goalpost whereas unilateral tolerance is where one part of the tolerance is zero. Citing the example of the F-16 fighter jets manufactured by both Japan and the U.S., where the U.S. manufacturers used goalpost tolerance technique whereas Japanese the on-target dimension for manufacturing the planes. It was discovered that though the parts and the blueprint were same the Japanese manufactured planes had higher mean-timebetween- failure reliability. It states that unilateral tolerance should be kept unilateral and the standard deviation function of the process should be valued.
