Abstract

Inspired by the popular Arab protests against oppressive regimes that began in 2010, people around the world protested in sympathy with the Arab peoples. The present research draws on two major theories of intergroup relations to develop an initial integrative model of sympathetic collective action. We incorporate social dominance theory’s (SDT) concept of (rejectionist) legitimizing myths with the solidarity and emotional mediation concept of the social identity model of collective action (SIMCA) to understand motivations for sympathetic collective action among bystanders. Using data from 12 nations (N = 1,480), we tested three models: (a) SIMCA (i.e., solidarity, anger, and efficacy), (b) a social dominance theory model of collective action (i.e., social dominance orientation and ideologies concerning Arab competence), and (c) an integrated model of sympathetic collective action combining both theories. Results find the greatest support for an integrated model of collective action. Discussion focuses on theoretical pluralism and suggestions for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2. Promoting or Preventing Social Change? Perceived Threat (Instrumental/Ideological) and Identity as Protest Participation Motives.

Abstract

We conducted two surveys at two different squares of two different movements at exactly the same time against the same proposed budget cutting plans of the same government. This MSSD offered us the ability to test the relation between perceived threat (instrumental or ideological) identity and collective action frames of two movements (trade union federations and Turn the Tide, a movement against the neo-liberal government policies). We explain the relation between collective action frames and perceived threats in a self-regulation framework. Higgins (1997) proposes the existence of distinct self regulatory systems (comparable with mindsets) concerned with achieving different goals (a) ideal goals stem from achievement needs and refer to participants' aspirations, hopes, and wishes (e.g. participating in CA for animal rights); and (b) ought goals stem from security needs and refer to participants' obligations, duties, and responsibilities. Aiming at an ideal goal evokes a promotion mindset and aiming at an ought goal a prevention mindset. We hypothesized and found that the collective action frame of the trade unions has more prevention characteristics and attracted more participants with a prevention mindset, whereas the collective action frame of Turn the Tide contained more promotion characteristics and attracted more participants with a promotion mindset. Our theoretical framework on collective action participation discriminated Turn the Tiders from unionists on all the predictors in the expected direction and showed that the Turn the Tiders perceived a more ideological threat whereas the unionists perceived both an instrumental and ideological threat. Abstract

The social and political integration of Muslim immigrants into Western societies is among the most pressing problems of today. Research documents how immigrant communities are increasingly under pressure to assimilate to their “host” societies in the face of significant discrimination. In this article, we bring together two literatures—that on immigrants and that on social movement participation—to explore whether Muslim immigrants respond to their societal situation by engaging in collective political action. Although neither literature has given much attention to immigrant collective action, they do provide predictive leverage relative to the influence of grievances, efficacy, identity, emotions, and embeddedness in civil society networks. Our analyses are comprised of three separate but identical studies: a study of Turkish (N = 126) and Moroccan immigrants (N = 80) in the Netherlands and a study of Turkish immigrants (N = 100) in New York. Results suggest that social psychological mechanisms known to affect native citizens' collective action function similarly for immigrants to a great extent, although certain immigrant patterns are indeed unique.
