This paper first identifies representations of threats in Greek‐Cypriot newspapers related to the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement. Then, it identifies how alternative representations to these core representations of threats are managed through the use of a number of semantic barriers. Therefore, it problematizes the role (function) that such representations of threats play in undermining the potential for transformative dialogue in a post‐conflict and divided country in need of conflict transformation. Focus is on the editorials of two newspapers during a four‐month period before the collapse of the July 2017 Cyprus peace talks. Both were suspicious and polemic vis‐à‐vis the said negotiations but used different strategies to oppose them. Simerini convened recurrently threats such as Turkification, state dissolution and threats against Hellenism. Phileleftheros focused on the issue of security drawing red lines on various dossiers under discussion in the negotiations. The paper contributes to the theoretical debate of the relationship between social representations and identities and the role of threats and historical narratives in undermining transformative dialogue through the use of semantic barriers. 49 4 460 479

The paper discusses the main findings of a line of research that explored the social representations of the Cyprus issue and its history as well as intercommunal relations by Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the divided country of Cyprus. It focuses on the role of official historical narratives and their relation to social representations of intercommunal relations in Cyprus as manifested in oral history accounts of former inhabitants of mixed villages. Such inhabitants have living memories of intercommunal habitation before the war of 1974 and the geographical division of Cyprus by the Turkish army that year. These research findings are framed in the context of emerging interdisciplinary theoretical discussions between historians and social psychologists on the links between oral history accounts and collective memory in postconflict societies and their role in conflict transformation through intergroup contact and historical dialogue. © 2016 American Psychological Association. 22 1 19 27 Cited By :1; Export Date: 20 July 2017

In this commentary on Jahoda (2012) and Moghaddam (2012), I discuss the problem of the reification of culture from a social representations perspective and argue that social representations as a notion overcomes many of the shortcomings of the notion of culture, the main being reification. Whilst building this argument I show, by making reference to recent developments in the field of social representations and social developmental psychology, how weaknesses in social representations theory identified by Jahoda (1988) were addressed and how insights from this approach can be used for diversity management policies in education. © The Author(s) 2012 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav. 18 3 375 390 Cited By :8; Export Date: 20 July 2017

Asymmetries of status ,Piaget ,Socio-cognitive conflict ,Social identities ,Social representations - Abstract
Sorsana and Trognon [this issue] discussed the various representations of the subject of cognitive development that have been formed over the years since the seminal work of Jean Piaget. The terminology they used to describe this shift is that of the epistemic subject to the psychological subject, and finally, to the psychosocial actor . The aim of their review was to discuss the major conceptual and methodological obstacles to the analysis of the contextual determination of human thinking in psychology. In other words, the question was to identify the conceptual and methodological progress that was made during the last decades in order to try to grasp how cognitive acquisitions take place in interaction. Compared to similar reviews in Human Development [Psaltis, Duveen, & Perret-Clermont, 2009], this paper is an addition in at least three ways. First, it offered a more informed historical account of the importance of the work of Bärbel Inhelder on the microgenetic method and especially the emphasis on goals, intentions and control as a ‘transitional’ shift between the epistemic subject and the psychosocial actor. Second, it offered a convincing critique of methodological solipsism found in cognitive psychological research. Finally, it proposed an analysis of some data using the approach based on interlocutory logic as a way to formalize reasoning moves and their transformations in the unfolding interaction, thus offering a concrete proposal of how to analyze the psychosocial actor. However, at the same time, this analysis exposed the weak points of interlocutory logic since it can be criticized for lack of clarity in what it accepted and what it rejected in terms of the theoretical and methodological advances of work previously published and reviewed in the same paper. 54 4 234 240 Cited By :9; Export Date: 20 July 2017

Includes bibliographical references. Number of sources in the bibliography: 477. Thesis (Ph. D.) -- University of Cyprus, Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Department of Psychology, 2020. The University of Cyprus Library holds the printed form of the thesis. The current study aims at exploring the concept of the rights of the child as a socially constructed object in a setting highly influenced by inter-ethnic hostility fueled by an unresolved political problem, diffused in all aspects of social, economic, and cultural life of the inhabitants of Cyprus. The physical segregation of Cypriots according to their ethnic identification has resulted in adhering onto specific societal beliefs, determining even universal concepts, such as that of children’s rights. Simultaneously, its population number, being below a million, results in ‘hosting’ more conservative and traditional beliefs about childhood. Those two characteristics of the context sparked our interest to measure their impact on the applicability of the rights of the child. Social representations of the rights of the child were investigated via a questionnaire administered to educators (N=389) and children (N=565, mean age=16.3). The results indicated a different core of representations, with educators’ being characterized with rights of provision and children’s with participation rights. Conservative views of childhood, patriotism, nationalism, along with realistic and symbolic threats were anchored on the social representations of children, knitting a protective net around the core, strengthening it to resist changes, and even framing children’s rights as applicable to one’s own ethnic group. Another part of the research focused on analyzing the discourses, regarding children and their rights, of the two main power structures within the Greek Cypriot community, the printed press and the Church. The results of the analysis of the printed press indicate that children are a voiceless group within the Cypriot society, receiving media attention occasionally. When reported, they are portrayed either as ‘citizens of tomorrow’ or as passive recipients without experiences, critical thinking and maturity. Thematic analysis of the circulars the Archbishop sends to schools at the beginning of the school year prescribed two different roles of the child: the passive one, ’absorbing’ what is provided by the adult population vs. the acting one, with the responsibility to sustain the ‘ethics’ and pureness of the nation, to bolster nation cohesion and to address the symbolic threats experienced by the nation. The portrayal of childhood as a preparation phase identified in the analysis of the discourses of both power structures has important implication for the child, since it deducts him/her the right to be a right holder. Synthesizing all the results, the discourse of children as passive was internalized and accepted by children as normative one, resulting at children legitimizing violations of their own rights in certain cases. An in-depth perspective on actions to be extrapolated to empower children and society to advance the implementation of the rights of the child is provided to reframe their applicability as universal and alienable.

Number of sources in the bibliography: 398 Thesis (Ph. D.) -- University of Cyprus, Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Department of Psychology, 2013. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the current state of affairs and changes taking place in the higher education years of an individual in relation to both aspects of psychosocial and intellectual development in Greek Cypriot Universities. Theoretically, the thesis explores the interplay between psychosocial and intellectual development at four levels of analysis through a triadic epistemology of the subject-object-other. Taking Perry’s theory of ethical and intellectual development as a point of departure the thesis discusses the way Perry was influenced by both Piaget and Kohlberg, in the formulation of his stage theory. The way Perry’s work influenced more recent post Post-formal theories of cognitive development is also discussed. It is argued that all stage theories depended on a particular structuralist reading of Piagetian theory that suppressed the references to the social psychological work of Piaget and in particular the role of social interaction in cognitive development. This thesis then discusses how critical voices internal to this literature like Riegel’s attempted to depart from what they considered the individualistic paradigm through the introduction of a dialectical framework but then also point to the problems and shortcomings of these initial efforts. This problem is redressed through a discussion of the ways that major socio-cultural theorists understood human development in their more recent theories. Furthermore, the social in Piagetian theory and its development through successive generations of research on social interaction and cognitive development is revisited. An integrative framework of human development as a social psychological process is then proposed that welds together a role for social relations on crucial cognitive and psycho-social developmental outcomes like that of formal operational thinking, deep learning, tolerance, commitment to future plans and self-determination. The results of the thesis, beyond providing for the first time in the Cypriot context a description of the profile of university students’ state of development also clarify the role of gender and socio-economic status of the students in their development. Additionally, the thesis attempts the articulation of Doise (1986) four levels of analysis by integrating a role for social ethnic identity and ideological variables in a socio-cultural model of university student’s development. A questionnaire with reliable scales was designed after various cycles of pilot testing. The measures are based on the theoretical framework of Perry’s Scheme (1998), Piaget’s social psychological theory (Piaget 1932; Piaget 1977/1995) and Chickering and Reisser’s vectors of identity (1993). Questions were created based on the theories used in this thesis on the relevant subjects of the two areas of development to be examined. Its final version was administered at two different semesters. The findings suggest that minor changes are observed during the university years of a student. Still light is shed on the role of gender, socio-economic status and the major followed in relation to the cognitive and psycho-social development of students. With the help of hierarchical regressions, cross-lagged correlations and the construction of a SEM model a more holistic and clear picture of the role of social relations in cognitive and psycho-social development of students is offered.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 207-221). Number of sources in the bibliography: 147 Thesis (Ph. D.) -- University of Cyprus, Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Department of Psychology, March 2012. The University of Cyprus Library holds the printed form of the thesis. This PhD thesis explored the role of gender and expertise as asymmetries in the interactions of children. Children from two different age groups participated in the study (6-7 and 10-11 years old) in order to explore the role played by gender identity dynamics in the interactions of children of these two age groups. This work draws theoretically from the three generations of studies on peer interaction and cognitive development that initiated in Geneva more than thirty years ago. The study followed the pre-test, interaction, immediate and delayed post-test design. Children have to solve a spatial task individually, then they work in pairs with a partner who was more or less advance in his/her knowledge over the task (so that pairs include children of different levels of expertise) and finally they try again to solve the task individually the same day the interaction takes place (immediate post-test) and two weeks later (delayed post-test). The younger children also were administered with two tests assessing their understanding of the gender marking of toys and conceptual understanding of an interrelationship between sex-group membership and gender marking of material culture. The children of the fifth grade had to complete a questionnaire which examined the way they cope with interaction with members of the opposite gender, attitudes and stereotypes for the members of the other gender group and strength of gender identity. These gender measures were included in order to investigate the relation between varieties of gender identity and behaviour in the interaction as well as the relation between different positioning on gender identity and outcome measures. The results revealed that for younger children, gender clearly relates to their behavioural patterns and strategies in the interaction. Children may share the same goal but their behaviour is shaped by the social representations of gender that they bring in the interaction. In the interactions of older children (10-11 years old), gender was not found to relate directly to children’s behaviour. In fact, gender effect was found to diminish with age even though some children remain highly stereotyped. For these children, gender knowledge and identity was related to their outcomes indicating that when gender has an effect this is on the level of mental action. The findings are discussed in the light of existing theories and previous studies.

The University of Cyprus Library holds the printed form of the thesis. Beyond its diagnostic nature, depression is also a term that appears in daily discourse (Rogers & Pilgrim, 2014). Even though it is a familiar and frequently employed term, research suggests that depression generates ambivalence in patient, lay and media discourses (e.g., Brijnath & Antoniades, 2018b; Acosta et al., 2013; Hogg, 2011; Kokanović et al., 2013; Rowe et al., 2003; Zhang et al., 2016). Individuals fluctuate between its representation as a pathological (i.e., mental illness) and a nonpathological experience. The meanings ascribed to depression are actively and dynamically shaped by contextual influences (e.g., Flick, 2000a; Hsiao et al., 2006; De Mol et al., 2018). Yet, thus far, the relevant literature has relied mainly on quantitative methods and decontextualised approaches. Meanwhile, there is a lack of research examining the meanings of depression and the processes involved in their construction within different levels of a society. This thesis aimed to explore how is depression understood and experienced in the Greek-Cypriot context. To do so, it used the socioconstructionist lens of Social Representations Theory (Moscovici, 2008 [1961]) and a multi-level approach to examine the meanings ascribed to depression by the press, public and patients, as well as the genetic processes involved in their construction (Duveen & Lloyd, 1990). Study 1 explored the social representations of depression in the Greek-Cypriot press by thematically analysing 203 articles published in seven widely circulating newspapers. Two antithetical themes of representations were identified. One represented depression as a biological illness in need of medical treatment. The other represented depression as an ordinary, nonpathological experience linked to psychosocial causes and treated using self-management. Albeit their antithetical nature (i.e., medicalised Vs normalised), both representations fostered the individualisation of depression. Study 2 explored the social representations of depression in 43 members of the Greek-Cypriot public between the ages of 16 to 80 years old. Data were collected through eight focus groups and subjected to thematic analysis. Three themes were identified. Analysis revealed that depression was linked to today’s lifestyle, placed amidst pathology and nonpathology and represented as dynamically shifting between the two, and finally, constructed as a largely individualistic condition. Study 3 explored how eight Greek-Cypriot patients between the ages of 16 to 80 years old experience and make sense of depression. Thematic analysis uncovered three themes. These themes illuminated the embodied nature and social grounding of patients’ experiences, and suggested that depression is experienced as a struggle between the Self and the entity of depression. Taken together, findings from Studies 1 to 3 reveal the benefits of the multi-level approach used, illuminate the polyphasic nature of meanings ascribed to depression and its links to the theoretical construct of cognitive polyphasia (Jovchelovitch & Priego-Hernández, 2015; Moscovici, 2008 [1961]), and lastly, bring the individualisation of depression encountered in the Greek-Cypriot context to the fore. Methodological, theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 163-187). Number of sources in the bibliography: 263 Thesis (Ph. D.) -- University of Cyprus, Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Department of Social and Political Sciences, 2013. The University of Cyprus Library holds the printed form of the thesis. This dissertation explores the effectiveness of a particular approach to peace education, known as Worldview Transformation (WT) (Danesh & Danesh 2002a, 2002b, 2004b). The WT approach to peace education, in previous experiments, has been shown to be an effective pedagogical model. Following the cessation of violence in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), an educational program, based on the principles of WT was implemented to reconcile past traumas and foster positive attitudes between the Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. This research sought to test the applicability of the WT approach in the conflict of Cyprus While the cases of Cyprus and BiH retain many similarities, particularly in their ethno-nationalist origins, each conflict however, retains unique dynamics, characteristics and root causes. The results of this research are particularly significant due to the incredibly limited scientific evaluation of in-school peace education programs in Cyprus. While many studies have explored the effectiveness of peace education in overcoming nationalist narratives, increasing empathy, mutual tolerance and respect in the case of Cyprus, they have all been conducted in out-of-school contexts. Furthermore, this research also represents the first exploration of the effectiveness of WT in protracted conflicts generally. An EFP program, similar to that which was utilized in BiH was replicated and implemented in four Greek Cypriot primary school classrooms. Intrinsically motivated volunteer teachers were selected and subsequently trained to understand the principles of WT, as well as how it can be integrated into their classrooms. The EFP program was implemented over the course of one academic semester from January to June 2012. A total of 64 primary school students participated in the EFP program in the intervention group, with 42 students comprising the control groups. Pre and post intervention surveys were given to both groups which were designed to extract their worldviews in accordance with the principles and concepts of WT. Analysis of covariance was utilized to reveal significant differences between the intervention and control groups. Specifically, the older students reported significant change in the perception aspect of their worldview, while the younger students exhibited more positive attitudes toward the ‘other’ following the intervention. With respect to their attitudes toward ‘the conflict’, participation in the intervention resulted in a moderately positive change. The results showed that contrary to the initial assumptions, the students did not maintain strong conflict-based worldviews or overtly negative attitudes. The continued protraction of the conflict and a challenging pedagogy are assumed to have a negative effect on the successful application of the WT approach. Further research is needed to isolate and explore the aforementioned factors in greater detail. The lack of survival-based worldview amongst the children complements the recent theories of social psychological development and thus contradict Danesh’ theory of worldview progression.
