Using the population of all university professors (N = 13,479) in the province of Quebec, Canada, this article analyses the concentration of funding, papers and citations at the level of individual researchers. It shows that each of these distributions is different, citations being the most concentrated followed by funding, papers published and, finally, number of funded projects. Concentration measures also vary between disciplines; social sciences and humanities generally being the most concentrated. The article also shows that the correspondence between the elites defined by each of these measures is limited. In fact, only 3.2% of the researchers are in the top 10% for all indicators, while about 20% are in the top 10% for at least one of the indicators. The article concludes with a discussion of the causes of these observed differences and formulates a few hypotheses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sociological production is prompted and affected by the major social preoccupations of the society it stems from. This is an inherent feature of the social sciences because those who produce knowledge, in this case sociologists, participate in the society they study. The aim of this article is to highlight the social and historical conditions that are at the root of the production of knowledge in the sociology of sports, and the role the latter has played in the exercise sciences in Quebec. This article is composed of two parts. First, it will try to shed light on the social dynamics that created the sociology of sport. Second, it will try to show that the researchers' problematics and the theoretical traditions they have followed were a part of the power dynamics specific to Quebec society and the field of physical education. Briefly, this paper aims to show that the sociology of sport in Quebec has been shaped by the socio-historical conditions in which it has been created and that, at the same time, it has generated a specific social and academic dynamics.

A conference paper on the evolution of laicism in Québec from 1760 to circa 2012 and the teaching of laicism in Québec's public schools is presented. It discusses Québec's transition from a clerical to a secular historiography after 1947 and the influence of the Catholic Church. Further topics include the founding of the Mouvement laïque de langue française (MLF), or the French language secularism movement, in April 1961, the emancipation of women, and the involvement of the Québec government.

This paper concerns the case study in sociology, and in the social sciences in general. The classical definition attributed to the case study is examined here by recalling the methodological conflict in sociology, marked by a rift between qualitative and quantitative methods, and by a retrospective look at the well-known case studies that American researchers devoted to French Canada (or Quebec), more particularly to its rural culture whose transformation relates to the 'meeting of two worlds.' The criticism levelled at these case studies are examined, especially those concerning their presumed lack of representativeness and objectivity. This lack was invoked without these terms being really stated or clearly determined. In this article, objectivity is defined as being the detailed account of the methodological strategies and operations guiding the approach to an object of investigation. Moreover, a distinction is made between statistical representativeness and sociological representativeness which best determines the generalization value of the case study. Finally, while this approach is considered as a study, or even as descriptive theory, this paper shows that description proves essential in the definition of explanatory theories. The example of the case study approach to the French-language economy in Quebec is presented in order to re-examine, in strictly methodological terms, all the points raised in this paper. This paper argues that both the orthodox and radical treatments of farm Labor are distorted by the underrepresentation of women's participation on the family labor farm. Detailed information from a small parish in Quebec is examined to support this argument. Variables examined include the characteristics of both paid and nonpaid laborers, the distribution of responsibility for household and farm tasks, the time spent in various activities, and the extent to which household goods are produced by family members. The results indicate that both the direct and indirect contribution of women must be integrated into the analysis of agricultural production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on three meetings held in various parts of the world related to various aspects of sociology and criminology. First one was held from 27 August to 3 September 1965, Montreal, Quebec. It became the capital of international criminology. In it criminologists from all over the world met to take their bearings and to see what progress has been achieved in the scientific study of the causes of delinquency, methods of preventing criminal acts. Secondly, under the programmer for the development of comparative cross-cultural research of the International Social Science Cultural (ISSC), a conference following the ISSC General Assembly, was held in Paris, France from 22 to 24 April 1965. The conference considered five main themes: the cross-cultural method; comparative analysis of historical change; comparative analysis of processes of modernization; aggregate statistical comparisons of nations; comparative sample surveys. In general terms, the purpose of the conference was to discuss recent examples of comparative research on each of the above themes and to review alternative strategies for the further advancement of comparative research on a world scale. Lastly, representatives of the six European institutes taking part in the research for a comparative study of the various forms of aid to developing countries met in Vienna, Austria from 20 to 22 September 1963 to discuss the issue.

This study investigated whether the prevalence of weekly and problem gambling among youth varied according to cultural affiliation. A convenience sample of 1,265 Quebec high school students aged 12-18 was divided into three linguistic groupings: Anglophone (English), Francophone (French), and Allophone (other). Results revealed that the Allophone grouping contained the highest proportion of youth who gambled on a weekly basis and who reported gambling problems, followed by the Anglophone, and finally the Francophone groupings. Acculturation difficulties were associated with problem gambling. Few meaningful between-group differences were found with respect to factors related to problem gambling (i.e., comorbidity with other risk factors, coping, family functioning and resiliency). The results are discussed with respect to the influence of cultural background on gambling behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the analysis of residual deviance, the separability of input in the Quebec dairy industry between 1990 and 1998 is examined. A nonparametric production regression function based on the theory of generalized additive models is estimated by using the spline smoothing approach. The article presents an immanent critique of the social imaginary of otherness based in a definition of the cultural difference between English Canada as an absent nation and Quebec as an absent region. This is grounded in an examination of the dialogical forms of the life worlds in each society across three interrelated contexts of social discourse, world view, utterance and word.

The article provides a comparative analysis of the historical constitution of philosophical and sociological thought in Quebec. It reveals that in contrast to other Western societies, the human sciences in Quebec fulfilled the cognitive and social functions ascribed to philosophy elsewhere. This is particularly striking at the level of their inverted conceptualization of Quebec as a global society. The human sciences would have created both the mythical and societal ground allowing then, the emergence of a philosophical project.

This article provides information about Michel Freitag, a social theorist from Quebec. Born in 1935 in Switzerland, and with degrees in law and political economy, as well as a doctorate in sociology, he has taught since 1971 in the sociology department of the UQAM. When reading Michel's work, one is immediately struck by the fact that he is extremely well versed in the classical theoretical traditions, both sociological and philosophical and uncompromisingly so. Not only does he acknowledge the influence of these traditions, he works with their questions, uses their language and builds on their reflections. In effect, he believes that they are not just relevant to, but indispensable for a deepened understanding of the present condition. In effect, one could say that Michel Freitag is working with several of the traditions simultaneously. This, however is no eclectic mish-mash, but a work of synthesis of the highest order. Like all good synthesis, it is built from a long and critical reflection on and in reconstruction of the traditions with which he has cohabited and like all good synthesis it supposes a strong central thread that pulls the pieces together.
