This study examined the relationships between social support, belief in a just world (BJW), empathy, posttraumatic growth (PTG), and prosocial behaviors to clarify whether PTG and prosocial behaviors had shared or unique underlying mechanisms. Method: We used a self-reported questionnaire to investigate 920 adolescents that experienced a catastrophic flood in Henan Province, China, in July 2021. Structured equation modeling was used for the data analysis. Results: After controlling for trauma exposure, social support was directly related to both PTG and prosocial behaviors. Social support was also indirectly related to both PTG and prosocial behaviors via BJW. Moreover, social support was indirectly associated with prosocial behavior via empathy and via the path from BJW to empathy. Conclusions: These findings indicate that BJW and empathy play different roles in the relationships between social support and PTG and prosocial behavior, and suggest these relationships have unique mechanisms.

The present study investigated factors buffering the association between PTSD symptoms and suicidal ideation/behavior. A total of 571 Iranian students and 421 German students took part in the investigation. Social support and positive mental health (PMH) were considered as resilience factors moderating the association between PTSD symptoms and suicide ideation/behavior within both samples. PMH moderated the impact of PTSD symptoms on suicidal ideation/behavior in Iranian and German students. Social support moderated the impact of PTSD symptoms on suicidal ideation/behavior in Iranian students only. Positive mental health and perceived social support seem to confer resilience and should be taken into account, when assessing individuals for suicide risk.

However, previous findings of the association were mixed, and few empirical studies had explored the potential mediating mechanisms underlying the relationship. This study aimed to examine the association between disclosure to family members and H-QoL, and the role of social support in the relationship. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1104 PLWH (58.70% male, average age 37.05 years old) in Guangxi, China. Participants provided information on HIV disclosure to family members, perceived social support, H-QoL including physical and mental health dimensions (scored as Physical health score [PHS] and Mental health score [MHS]), and social-demographic characteristics. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and path analysis were applied to examine our hypotheses. Bivariate analysis demonstrated that HIV disclosure to family members was positively correlated with social support but not with PHS and MHS statistically. Social support was positively correlated with PHS and MHS. Path analysis revealed that the direct effects of disclosure on both physical and mental H-QoL were not significant. In contrast, the indirect effects of disclosure on both mental and physical H-QoL through social support were significant, despite of small effect size. The potential mediating role of social support was highlighted in improving PLWH's well-being. Future interventions targeting H-QoL promotion might incorporate disclosure management and communication skills that are likely to elicit social support and invite patients' family members to participate in the interventions as appropriate.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of supportive-educational interventions on stress and adaptation to the maternal role among women with premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. Methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 60 women with premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. A control group (n = 30) was initially selected from eligible female participants. Sampling was stopped for three weeks and then the intervention group was sampled. The entire sampling process was carried out from December 2018 to June 2019. The control group received usual care at the hospital and the intervention group (n = 30) received three sessions of supportive-educational intervention in addition to routine care. Data were collected through the perceived stress and the maternal role adaptation questionnaires completed by both groups at the time of infant discharge, and also at the follow-up period (one month after discharge). Results The results showed that maternal stress score changed considerably over time and a significant difference between the two groups was observed (P < 0.05). Additionally, adaptation to the maternal role changed substantially over time and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion The supportive-educational program reduced the stress of mothers with premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit and increased their adaptation to the maternal role.

According to previous studies, the circumstances of coronavirus disease-related deaths may lead to dysfunctional grief. The purpose of this study was to introduce the Polish adaptation of the Pandemic Grief Scale (PGS) as well as to assess the relationship between dysfunctional grief due to a COVID-19 death, resilience and perceived social support. The adaptation was carried out on a general population sample of 286 individuals aged 18-54 years, with the evaluation being performed on a group comprising 214 people aged 18-78 years, who lost a loved one during the pandemic. The Polish version of PGS revealed a single-factor structure with strong internal consistency ([alpha] = 0.89). The PGS scores were associated with measures of complicated grief (Inventory of Complicated Grief), depression (Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale) and lower resilience (Resilience Scale 14), which confirmed the scale&apos;s convergent validity. No relation between PGS scores and health behaviors (Inventory of Health Behaviors) was observed, which confirmed the scale&apos;s discriminant validity. The results of the bootstrapping technique revealed that resilience mediates the relationship between perceived social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support) and dysfunctional grief (total mediation). The results of this study suggest the need for practitioners to focus on resilience-enhancing interventions and perceived social support in order to improve mental health in people who lost their loved ones during the new coronavirus pandemic.

Path analysis showed, in Study 1, that access to help (as an indicator of social support) had a direct effect on likelihood of testing and indirect effects through self-efficacy, perceived risk and preventive behavior; and, in Study 2, that neighborhood identification (as an indicator of social support) had a direct effect on likelihood of testing and indirect effects on likelihood of both testing and vaccination through the mediators of strength of social network, loneliness, perceived risk of COVID-19, and preventive activity. Both studies suggest that level of social support (conceptualized in different ways) is an important determinant of COVID-19 testing and Study 2 shows it is also a determinant of likelihood of vaccination. As resurgences of COVID-19 occur, it will be necessary to monitor the likelihood of COVID-19 testing and vaccination behaviors and, especially, to promote confidence in the latter in individuals with decreased access to social support.

[...], This study aims to characterize the psychosocial impact of COVID-19 lockdown for post-bariatric surgery ([greater than or equal to] 36 months) women and its association with disordered eating and psychological distress. The medium to long-time follow up is a period of increased susceptibility for poorer weight outcomes which might be triggered by the lockdown. Twenty-four participants responded to an online questionnaire and a telephone interview. About half (n = 14; 58.3%) reported perceived weight gain during the lockdown, 13 (54.1%) limited access to social support, and 12 (50%) limited access to medical care. Co-habiting with a higher number of persons during lockdown was associated with fewer difficulties in dealing with emotionally activating situations, less fear of gaining weight, less fear of losing control over eating, and less disordered eating. The global perceived psychosocial impact of lockdown was significantly correlated with difficulties in dealing with emotionally activating situations and stress symptoms. Results highlight the need to monitor post-bariatric patients, facilitate health care access, and promote social support during the lockdown period.

This study examined college women&apos;s daily PA intentions and behavior, and whether social support or social comparison orientation (SCO) moderated the PA intention-behavior relation. College women (N = 80) completed measures of social support and SCO at baseline. For seven consecutive days, participants completed an electronic survey to assess PA intentions and wore an activity monitor to assess minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA). Results indicated that intended and performed MVPA minutes were weakly related (p = 0.17, sr = 0.16). Social support did not moderate the intention-behavior relation, but SCO did (p = 0.04, sr = 0.21). Participants with stronger (vs. weaker) SCO, particularly a tendency to compare downward (i.e., to worse-off others), showed smaller discrepancies between intended and completed MVPA. College women frequently fail to achieve PA goals, but stronger tendencies to make (downward) social comparisons may minimize this gap and be a target for intervention.

We explored gender-stratified correlates of being virally unsuppressed in the Prevention for Positives (P4P) component of HPTN 065. The outcome of interest was unsuppressed viral load (> 40 copies/mL) among individuals already living with HIV. Correlates included medication adherence factors, social support and stigma. Logistic regression models were stratified by gender (N = 673). Men-specific correlates of being virally unsuppressed included opposite-sex partners, older age and HIV disclosure stigma. Women-specific correlates included time since diagnosis, and personal-level barriers to medication adherence. When more individuals knew about their HIV status, women had over twice the likelihood of being virally unsuppressed; no such association was seen among men. Additionally, higher levels of social support were not associated with viral suppression among women. Interventions should consider gender-specific approaches to engaging social support in de-stigmatization of HIV and promotion of medication adherence and subsequent viral suppression.

Guidelines recommend monthly Total-Skin-Self-Examination (TSSE) performed by melanoma survivors to detect recurrent and new primary melanoma. TSSE is underperformed despite evidence of benefit. 2. Objective: To compare a self-directed digital intervention (intervention group) with treatment as usual (control group) in patients treated for a first stage 0-IIC primary cutaneous melanoma within the preceding 60 months. 3. Study design: Randomized clinical trial. 4. Setting: Two UK NHS hospitals (Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Grampian and Addenbrookes, Cambridge 5. Population studied: Adults (aged >18) diagnosed with a first 0-IIC primary cutaneous melanoma. 6. Intervention: ASICA (Achieving Self-directed Integrated Cancer Aftercare) is a tablet-based digital intervention to prompt and support TSSE in melanoma survivors. The hypothesis tested was that ASICA would increase TSSE practice in those affected by melanoma using it, and compared to controls, without affecting psychological well-being. 7. Outcomes Measures: Melanoma worry (Melanoma Worry Scale, MWS), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; HADs), and quality of life (EuroQoL EQ-5D-5L) were collected by postal questionnaire 3, 6 and 12-months following randomisation. 8. Results: 241 recruits randomised (1:1) to ASICA (n=141) or control, n=140). There were no significant differences between groups for melanoma worry at 12 months (mean difference 0-12 95% confidence interval (-0-6, 0-84), p=0-743), at 3 months (0-23 (-0-31, 0- 78) p=0.402) or 6 months (-0-1 (0-7, 0-51) p=0-757). The ASICA group had lower anxiety scores at 12 months (- 0.54 (-1.31, 0.230 p=0.168), at 3 months (-0-13; -0-.79, 0-54; p=0-711) and significantly at 6 months (-1-00 (-1-74, -0-26) p=0-009). Depression scores were similar being lower at 12 months (-0-44 (-1-11, 0-23), p=0.195) and 3 months (-0-24 (-0-84, 0-35)p=0-421) but only significantly lower at 6 months (-0-77 (-1-41, -0-12) p=0-020). The ASICA group had significantly higher quality of life scores at 12 months (0-044; (0-003, 0-085); p=0-036) and 6 months (0-070 (0-032, 0-107) p 9. Conclusions: Using ASICA for 12 months does not increase melanoma worry and can reduce anxiety and depression and improves quality of life. ASICA has the potential to improve well-being of melanoma survivors and enable the benefits of regular TSSE.

Salsberry [sup.3] [...], Objectives The aim of our study is to explore the relationships between neighborhood context, perceived social support, and parenting for low-income mothers with young infants. Methods Data were collected during the first three time points from the Kids in Columbus Study, a 5-year longitudinal study on low-income families. Mother-child dyads (n = 228) were recruited from five Women, Infants, and Children Centers located in a Midwestern Metropolitan area. Data for the present study represents mother-child dyads that had completed time point 1 (infant age birth to 3-months), time point 2 (infant age 4 to 7 months), and 3 (infant age 9- to 12-months old). Results Social support and neighborhood quality were associated with both maternal perceptions and observed parenting outcomes. Social support positively predicted maternal perceptions of self-efficacy whereas neighborhood quality was positively related to parent involvement. Discussion Overall, social support and neighborhood quality were related to aspects of parenting in the first year of children&apos;s lives. There was no evidence that the association between social support and parenting varied as a function of neighborhood quality. This finding suggests the neighborhood qualities captured in our study do not influence mothers&apos; ability to access social support during infancy.

Observational and epidemiological studies have revealed that social support reduces the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the current literature lacks research regarding the perceived social support of pregnant women in relation to birth weight from a qualitative perspective. This study explored the perceptions and experiences of social support during pregnancy among low-income women who had recently given birth to a LBW infant. Method A qualitative descriptive design was used to explore women&apos;s social support experiences during pregnancy. The sample comprised 15 women who had given birth to a LBW infant within the past 9 months from the five urban and rural WIC clinics in the Midwest United States and a university hospital neonatal clinic. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Results Three themes emerged: women&apos;s experience of pregnancy; challenges faced by women during pregnancy; and availability of essential supports for women during pregnancy. The father of the infant and female relatives were identified as major sources of support during pregnancy, and the women in the sample expressed a desire to obtain social support from family and friends. Conclusion for Practice Women from low socioeconomic backgrounds face various challenges that could adversely affect birth outcomes. Social support may minimize the impact of adverse life situations. Providing adequate social support requires addressing the multiple dimensions of social support and strengthening the existing support system.

Introduction Transition from school to work is a major need for youth with disabilities as Certo et al. (2008) noted in their call for programs targeting seamless transition. Young people [...], For most youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), employment upon graduation from high school or college is elusive. Employment rates are reported in many studies to be very low despite many years of intensive special education services. This paper presented the preliminary results of a randomized clinical trial of Project SEARCH plus ASD Supports on the employment outcomes for youth with ASD between the ages of 18-21 years of age. This model provides very promising results in that the employment outcomes for youth in the treatment group were much higher in non-traditional jobs with higher than minimum wage incomes than for youth in the control condition. Specifically, 21 out of 24 (87.5%) treatment group participants acquired employment while 1 of 16 (6.25%) of control group participants acquired employment. Delay discounting refers to the finding that the subjective value of a reinforcing outcome decreases as its delivery is delayed (see Madden and Bickel 2010, for a recent review). For [...], Delay discounting occurs when the subjective value of an outcome decreases as its delivery is delayed. The present study investigated whether how individuals discount delayed outcomes would vary as a function of who would hypothetically experience the outcome and the participants&apos; perceived level of social support. In Experiment One, 600 university students completed a measure of perceived social support and a discounting task involving four different outcomes, with different groups differing in terms of who would hypothetically receive the outcome being discounted (themselves, their mother, or a classmate). The degree of discounting did not vary as a function of recipient of the outcome, but did vary significantly and inversely with perceived level of social support. Experiment Two replicated the effect of perceived social support in 488 university students, but failed to demonstrate that the degree of discounting varied as a function of the level of social support available to the recipient of the outcome being discounted. These results suggest that people discount outcomes similarly regardless of who will be the recipient of the outcome, but that rates of discounting are reliably altered by the discounter&apos;s own perceived level of social support. The latter finding is potentially informative as to why social-support groups may be valuable in therapeutic environments.
