Since the Japanese government put forward the concept of Society 5.0 in January 2016, smart society has aroused extensive discussion in the international academic circle. However, this concept has been hardly discussed or cited in China. What is the root cause of this observation? Based on this question, this paper systematically reviews the existing literature on smart society both domestically and internationally. It provides a reverse critique of the misguided viewpoints supporting Society 5.0 from the perspectives of concept, motivation, elements, and goals. It also conducts a comprehensive analysis of the existing critical arguments against Society 5.0 in academia, considering theories, motivations, elements, and consequences, providing a forward critique. The paper further analyzes failed cases of smart society implementation, offering practical critique. By considering three perspectives, it identifies and categorizes the critical arguments against Society 5.0, forming three arrays of critique. Additionally, the paper addresses the fundamental reasons for the criticism of Society 5.0 in China and proposes an alternative vision: Civilization 5.0 as the ideal society of the future. Civilization 5.0 encompasses three transformative changes: eco-lization, intellectualization, and inclusiveness. In 2016, Ecological Research ( ER) celebrated its 30th anniversary. ER's goal is to be the leading ecological, evolutionary, and biodiversity journal in Asia. This article introduces the development of ER, improvements to its editorial system and their outcomes, and the strategies designed to achieve this goal. ER has already become a leading comprehensive and international publication as shown by statistical evidence and its strong editorial foundation. However, some members of the Ecological Society of Japan (ESJ) retain impressions of an old stereotype about ER. The discrepancy between the current status of the journal and its stereotype may explain why submissions from Japan remain static. A new article category for ER, Biodiversity in Asia, was created to encourage Asian studies. In addition, the Forum category is dedicated to promoting a broad understanding of the ESJ's various activities. To promote open science, the proportion of open access articles in the journal is increasing. The publication of Data papers has been accelerated to improve the public availability of excellent open data sets. ER symposia and seminars provide good opportunities for members to participate. ER financially supports the invitation of scientists internationally to facilitate research exchanges with other countries and consequently promotes the internationalization of the ESJ. The article reports on the latest activities of the Japan History of Economic Thought (HET) Society as of June 1984. It cites several activities of four regional branches, namely, the Kanto branch, the Seinan branch, the Tohoku branch and the Kansai branch. The activities were mainly presentation of papers, including the reading by the Kanto branch of "The Discovery of Social Surplus and Marx," by Shigeo Abiko at the Rikkyo University on June 4, 1983.

Homeless people in Osaka City are geographically concentrated. The purpose of this paper is to empirically test the hypothesis that the geographic concentration arises from the benefits of homeless networks. A spatial regression model is estimated using data on Osaka City's homeless population by census blocks. The positive coefficient of the spatially lagged dependent variable enables us to explore how a homeless network across census blocks, outweighs a negative competition effect. At present, Japanese researchers conducting social surveys encounter several difficulties such as restricted access to official registers and a decrease in current response rates. These researchers may expect these difficulties to be solved by the survey techniques or methods developed outside Japan, such as computer-assisted interviews (CAI) and Internet surveys. It is unclear whether the numerous technical differences between survey methodologies developed in Japan and elsewhere imply the backward-ness of Japan or cultural differences. This paper discusses the potential of various recent survey methods, focusing on the culture and paradigms in Japan and the UnitedStates. First, this paper presents an overview of survey techniques, such as computer-assisted personal interviewing, Internet surveys, and mixed modes. Second, it points out the fact that the existence of the registers and different survey concepts might have created the different survey paradigms. In addition, reference is made to the linguisticdifferences between the US and Japan. The results indicate that survey research is more dispersed in Japan than in the US and that survey research adapted to the uniqueness of Japanese culture is not accumulated sufficiently, although such an accumulation is required. Finally, it is stated that not only surveys, but also the concept of methodology, is not very popular in Japan. This special issue introduces psychoanalysis in Japan, its history, thoughts, and development, through the autobiographies of some Japanese psychoanalysts. I graduated relatively recently from a training course in psychoanalysis at the Japan Institute of Psychoanalysis and was certified as a psychoanalyst by the Japan Psychoanalytic Society (JPS). If I am to write about why I aimed to become a psychoanalyst in Japan and how I became one, not only my personal history but also the influences of Japanese culture and Japanese therapeutic culture will undoubtedly be important. In this article, by relating my life history, I trace the path I followed for becoming a psychoanalyst and explore the broader implications of my experience. The paper “An Autobiographical Study” by Freud (1925) is a famous autobiographical psychoanalytic essay, and a more recent paper “Learning from Life―Becoming a Psychoanalyst” by Casement (2006) is also well known. To publicize an autobiography, a psychoanalyst always includes the possibility of self-disclosure. Because I am still practicing psychoanalysis regularly, I hesitate slightly to write this article. However, writing an autobiography is also, in part, a process of self-analysis after becoming a psychoanalyst, and can be considered a part of a psychoanalyst’s interminable training (Okada, 2012). The Fukushima catastrophe is a turning point in the conception, role and management of technology in industrial societies. As did Hiroshima (on another dimension) after 1945, the Fukushima nuclear accident questions and transforms established conceptions and values concerning the relations between technology, politics, industry, society and the environment. It has become impossible to think after Fukushima as we did before. This catastrophe initiates a major epistemic and conceptual shift with long-term consequences. This paper focuses on a powerful conceptual complex associating the notions of risk, trust and knowledge society. This complex associates discourses, theories and policies. The article reports on the second Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers- Robotics and Automation Society/International Federation of Robotics Research (IEEE-RAS/IFFR) International School of Robotics Science held on September 18-23, 2005 at the University of Tokyo, Japan. The article focuses on the 20-year old history of the periodical "Neuropathology." The periodical was founded in 1980. The members of the Japanese Society of Neuropathology, Japan, submitted their manuscripts to Western periodicals and so the need for an English edition, was felt. The internationalization of the periodical began in 1993 under editor-in-chief, Koshiro Fujisawa. Most of the original papers in "Neuropathology," have consisted of human case reports.

This article aims to investigate the issue of quality of life in the context of an attention-grabbing phenomenon - social withdrawal of youth in Japan. The s concept of quality of life is scrutinized at three levels: 1) the level of individual, 2) the level of family and 3) the level of community. In conclusion, the concept of "quality of life" is not only the indicator of personal or communal well-being (or its decline), but might also be used as "litmus paper" showing emerging transformation of values in the given culture. This paper reveals the historical background to the word and concepts of 'shido' and considers the social meanings that the word and concepts of 'shido' have expressed in the context of the wartime period, especially by extracting and analyzing the discourses dealing with the word and concepts of 'shido' in educational discourses from the Meiji period to the period immediately after the war. The idea exists that school education in our country had distinct pre-war and post- war periods due to educational reforms in the occupation period, and we have often seen assumptions based such periodization in this field of studies. However, in the overemphasis on the self-evident view that there was a 'break' between pre-war education and post-war education, we have overlooked events in the educational history of our country. This paper has therefore picked up the word and concepts of 'shido' among the educational phenomena of Japan. The paper's objective is to demonstrate the historical background (origin and spread) of 'shido' and to analyze the social meanings (status and function) that the word and concepts of 'shido' have been given by Japan society, especially in the wartime context. I believe this paper has obtained the following conclusions (1) and hypothesis (2): (1) The word 'shido' goes back to the Meiji period, and the 'shido' paradigm, as a recognition framework understood by the word and concepts of 'shido,' was established in the wartime period. (2) The 'shido' paradigm has conditioned education and society in Japan, since, as norms themselves, attitude requests included in 'shido' elicit response practice to 'shido,' i.e. as an 'increase in educational response' to an 'increase in educational attitude.' The article discusses the history of the Bernard Shaw Society of Japan (BSSJ) as of its 40th anniversary in 2011. It notes the role of scholar Matahiko Ichikawa in facilitating Shaw's 1933 visit to Japan and in forming the society, originally called the Shaw Society of Japan (SSJ), in 1971. Other topics include the society workshops, its biannual meetings that include international lecturers, and its publication of the paperback book series "Bernard Shaw Studies." The society has also published the guidebook "Welcome to the Shavian World" in order to introduce Shaw to the Japanese public.

This paper explores social stratification and social inequality in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan by comprehensively analyzing the effects of occupation on one's class status. In this paper, the author examines the effects that a person's occupational conditions, such as occupation (interpreted narrowly), employment status, type of employment contract (standard or non-standard), and company size, have on his/her individual income and class consciousness, and how these effects vary within East Asian societies on the basis of each society's unique labor market structure and local institutions. The analysis of the 2005 Social Stratification and Social Mobility (SSM) survey data led to the following findings. On the whole, the effects of occupational conditions on income and class consciousness are similar within all these societies. However, the relative impacts of these conditions differ considerably. While occupation (narrowly interpreted) has predominant effects in Taiwan, the effects of company size and type of employment contract are also considerable in Japan, and partly so in Korea. It is also notable that in the case of Japanese males, company size and type of employment contract have significant effects on class consciousness, even after the effects of individual income are controlled. These effects can be attributed to some factors that are unique to the Japanese management system, such as career-long employment and the wage seniority system that are usually offered to the standard male employees of large companies. From these findings, we can conclude that we should focus on local institutional factors as well as global factors for a better understanding of present-day social stratification and social inequality in East Asian societies. This paper examines two topics related to intergenerational class mobility: long-term trends in class mobility in post-war Japan and cross-national comparison. First, the trends in relative class mobility, which is the indicator of societal openness, show an overall stability in post-war Japan. There was no evidence to support the notion of increased rigidity and mobility barriers in recent Japan. This notion was probably derived from the changes in class structure and absolute mobility. Both the share of the upper white-collar class and the proportion of upward mobility were reduced: at the same time, both the share of the unskilled manual class and the proportion of downward mobility were increased. These changes probably affected people's perception of increased rigidity in class structure. Second, this paper examined Japan's position in relation to other industrial societies in the 1970s and 1990s. With regard to relative mobility rate. Japan was located in the middle position implying that it is neither more fluid nor less fluid than other industrial societies. With regard to absolute mobility rate, Japan showed a trend of a rapid increase in total mobility rate following the process of industrialization, just like other late-industrializing societies. The paper examined the relative location of all the nations in our analysis by taking into account the trends of both absolute mobility rate and relative mobility rate during the process of industrialization. The article presents an overview of scientific papers on the Baltic States in Japan. Baltic, as well as Nordic historical studies, started in Japan in the 1970s and 1980s, with monographs such as "The Baltic Sea Region: Regional Cooperation in Future" and "History of Poland, Ukraine, Baltic." At Hokkaido University in Sapporo, the Slavic Research Center (SRC) was established in June 1953, and in 1978, Japanese researchers created the Association for Balto-Scandinavian Studies. Other publications in this field of research are highlighted.

Since the mid-1990s, Japanese society has experienced a sharp increase in the number of street homeless people. Most them are relatively old. At present, more than fifty percent of the street homeless are over fifty years old. However, in addition to the older people, we are beginning to see younger street homeless people. In this paper, I define younger as below thirty-five years. The younger people still comprise a small proportion of the street homeless people; that is, they are fewer than ten percent of the entire street homeless population. However, they should not be neglected merely because they have until now constituted a negligible-sized group. Younger street homeless people are a completely new phenomenon for the Japanese. They might be the heralds of the changing structure of Japanese society. This paper uses the life histories of younger street homeless people to describe and analyze two distinctive processes in their experiences; these processes are the "process of becoming" and the "process of remaining." Usually, in their endeavor to explain both processes, scholars advance claims that are strongly economic. The scholars may be correct as long as their focus is on older people. However, the issue is slightly different in the case of younger people. Younger people often tell us that their job losses have been spontaneous. While such answers should certainly not be examined superficially, it is also important that the experiences and pathways of younger people be analyzed by including variables other than economic ones; these variables are the state of the social world and that of the inner world. Lastly, this paper reconsiders the experiences of younger street homeless people from a structural perspective. The development of gerontological education is lagging behind in Japan in spite of Japan's large population of elders. Nevertheless, there are signs that this may be changing. In this paper we discuss how gerontology education has evolved in Japan over the past 40 years. Specifically, we provide an overview of the development of academic societies related to gerontology, the number of gerontological books published, government statements about gerontology education, and Japan's only graduate program in gerontology.We also identify some reasons for the delay in creating gerontology programs and propose specific steps that might be taken to reverse this trend. The Seventh World Congress of the Econometric Society will be held at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan from August 22 to August 29, 1995. Economists are then invited to submit papers for possible presentation at the Congress by January 31, 1995. It is hoped that papers presented at the Congress will represent a broad spectrum of applied and theoretical economics and econometrics. The chairmen of the Program are enumerated for the benefit of participants. Description of abstract presentation are also included. This paper reports the activities of occupational health organizations in Japan, taking Nishinihon Occupational Health Service Center, one of the largest scale occupational health service providers, as an example. The organizations, at the request of enterprises, provide occupational health services on a profit basis especially for small- and medium-scale enterprises which lack the human resources and/or facilities to meet legal requirements on occupational health. The main services include: (1) providing various types of medical examinations for workers, (2) measuring work environment, (3) occupational physicians and occupational health nurses providing a comprehensive service. Among these services, legally required health examinations and work environment measurements are well served even for small-scale enterprises. Less effective are the health promotion and occupational health service by the occupational health staffs. In the future, these services will be better provided by a newly developed network system to support occupational heath activities in small-scale enterprises. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article discusses the highlights of two meetings held by the Mycological Society of Japan (MSJ) in 2012. These meetings were the Symposium on Nomenclatural Change held during the annual meeting of the MSJ on May 26 in Gifu and the Forum on the Future of Microbial Databases held on May 28 in Tokyo. The meetings were related to the Melbourne Code, the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants (ICN).

The author announces the publication of the article "Society of Toxicologic Pathology Position Paper on Pathology Image Data: Compliance with 21 CFR Parts 58 and 11" in volume 35 issue of the "Journal of Toxicologic Pathology." He claimed that the article was published after an agreement was signed between the Society of Toxicologic Pathology and Sage Publications. The author argued that the decision of the Japanese Society of Toxicologic Pathology (JSTP) to republish the article denotes a global cooperation among toxicologic pathology societies.

The article discusses the Society of Language Management, a Japan-based forum for professional researchers and graduate students working in the field of Language Management Theory (LMT) to exchange their ideas and research findings and work towards the further development of the theory. It has 80 members representing both Japanese and overseas institutions. It is run by Hidehiro Muraoka from the University of Chiba and Sau Kuen Fan from Kanda University for Foreign Studies.

The article offers information on the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), an independent administrative agency established in 2001 and launched as an institute for ceramics and metals in Japan. Abstract: Following The Declaration of Istanbul 2008, a registration committees of The Japan Society for Transplantation and The Japanese Society for Clinical Renal Transplantation planned to establish a new registry and tracking system for renal transplant recipients and donors supported by a Health Labor Sciences Research Grant by The Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare. In place of the previous paper-based system, we established the new registry and tracking system, JARTRE (Japan Renal Transplantation Registry), using USB memory in 2009. Recipient and donor data were inputted into the USB memory at the transplantation centers. The memory was reviewed a yearly by committees. The recipient and donor registration included details from both. The tracking is performed centrally 3 months, 1 year, and every year after the operation. The advantages of this system are the ease of input, adequacy of the data, and rapid statistical processing. In 2009, we registered 97.9% of new renal transplantation recipients and donors; in 2008 it was more than 81.9% of all past renal transplantation recipients in Japan. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The purpose of this paper is to discover the latest bases for contemporary sociology in Japan. First such base of sociology was explored in secondary education, which identified that "the contemporary society" of the civics is very important. The second new base was discovered in the collision field. The logic of medicine in that field will encounter the logic of life, and in that collision situation, many medical doctors and co-medicals will need new frameworks to understand the situation. In the civics of high school, some "learning-units" are about selective contemporary social problems. The educational aim in high schools is to enable the synthesis of thought in all the students so that they will be able to use two or more social sciences. Sociological system theory and certain other sociological tools are useful in such educational practices. In medical education, not all medical students can avail the opportunity of studying the perspectives on ordinary living, a fault that was pointed out by the young family medicine doctor. In reality, it is necessary to adjust reciprocally the logic of the medicine and logic of life, a process in which sociology can participate. This participation is an opportunity for the society of sociology, which in other words, is an example of sociology adding to the surroundings. Recently, the network analysis is generally used to recognize complex interpersonal relations. The hyperlinks in WWW became one of the prominent data sources to construct the network. In order to examine validity of using the hyperlink relation for the network construction, this paper takes an example of the Web page of Diet member in Japan. We have constructed two kinds of networks for comparison. One is usual hyperlink network, and the other is reference relationship in the Web text. The network centrality analyses and faction analysis were applied to the obtained networks. As a result, the hyperlink based networks are suitable for faction analysis, and the reference based networks are suitable for analyses of various centralities. The utilization of WWW will become general in political field, while it is not progressed in large political party at present. The Japanese are often regarded as an "inscrutable" people completely dominated by a unique group-orientation. This paper is an attempt to demystify this Group Model of Japanese society. An alternative model is constructed which combines a phenomenological analysis of motives and obligations with an elementary theory of social and economic exchange. Popular religious affiliations in Japan are analyzed in terms of their characteristic "hegemonal motives." This approach is also put forward as a way of bridging the gap between the sociology of Far Eastern religions and the standard typology of religious groups in the West. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous studies of the prestige of occupations have been conducted in the United States. In recent years considerable attention has been directed toward such research in non-Western societies, including Japan. One basic problem of these studies has been to explain why most available data appear to show that there are substantial similarities in the occupational prestige hierarchies of various societies. Several authors take for granted the notion that the prestige hierarchies of many different societies are similar, despite the fact that the evidence is not wholly convincing;then they go on to explain the similarities by means of what they call a "structural" hypothesis. Specifically, they hold that industrialization produces its own characteristic occupational prestige hierarchy, regardless of the cultural milieu in which it is located. Elsewhere it has been shown that industrialization per se cannot be responsible for much of the observed intersocietal similarity in prestige hierarchies; part of the observation is probably an artifact of the research design and part of it is probably due to "structural similarities" in social systems with complex divisions of labor, whether industrial or not.
