Recent research has investigated the emotional underpinnings of support for the political new right. Some of these works focus on the supply-side of support, emphasising specific political styles and discourses, whereas others emphasise the demand-side, highlighting cultural, economic and emotional factors. Lacking from this research, in particular for the European context, is an understanding of how supporters of the new right experience and make sense of pertinent cleavages with regard to emotions. The present study sets out to acquire a more detailed understanding of the emotional narratives of supporters of the new right, in particular with regard to fear and religious cleavages. Using group interviews with supporters of new right parties and movements in Germany, we show that narratives involving fear pertain to the idea of a valued collective ‘We’ that consists of political and cultural elements, and serves as a reference point to collective identity and an antidote to existential insecurities. Further, the collective We is perceived to be threatened by cultural differences and changing majority-minority relations with respect to five domains of social life: demography, liberal democratic order, public majority culture, security and welfare.

How do actors on financial markets transform the plethora of informational signals into concrete valuations of traded assets? How do they make decisions in an environment characterized by fundamental uncertainty? Although there is a rich tradition in economic sociology suggesting that emotions and other subjective factors play a decisive role in this regard, empirical studies of their relevance for economic action have remained rare. The present study seeks to fill this void. It investigates the emotional underpinnings of the practices of financial valuation in the German financial sector. Drawing on in-depth interviews with, and ethnographic observations of day traders and fund managers, the study shows that emotions are essential ingredients of their collective calculative practices. Results of the present study yield three empirically grounded key concepts that advance understanding of emotions in financial valuation: First, subjectively experienced market feelings enable traders and managers to imagine imminent market futures. Second, market sentiments reflect traders’ attributions of specific emotional qualities to financial markets and facilitate their understanding of market behaviour. Third, floor emotions are collective emotions in which traders become involved in organizations and on trading floors that help mitigate situational uncertainty.

Diskriminierung aufgrund ethnischer Zugehörigkeit ist zwar mit rechtlichen und sozialen Normen unvereinbar, wird jedoch vielfach empirisch beobachtet. Die vorliegende Studie geht der Frage nach, ob ethnische Diskriminierung Bestandteil des sozialen Miteinanders in einem Kernbereich der Gesellschaft, der Politik, ist. Der Beitrag untersucht ethnische Diskriminierung in der Interaktion zwischen gewählten politischen Repräsentanten*innen, denen gemeinhin ein moralischer Vorbildcharakter zugeschrieben wird, und ihren Wählern*innen. Zudem möchten wir wissen, ob sich das Ausmaß ethnischer Diskriminierung zwischen Vertretern*innen unterschiedlicher Parteien unterscheidet. Dazu haben wir ein Korrespondenztest-Feldexperiment zur Hilfsbereitschaft von Abgeordnetenbüros des Deutschen Bundestags im Vorfeld der Bundestagswahl 2013 durchgeführt. An alle Bundestagsabgeordneten wurden Hilfeersuchen per E-Mail gerichtet, die randomisiert entweder mit einem deutsch oder türkisch klingenden Namen unterzeichnet waren. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass E-Mails mit türkisch klingenden Namen weniger häufig Antworten erhielten. Das ist ein Indiz für ethnische Diskriminierung. Zudem zeigen wir, dass sich das Diskriminierungsverhalten zwischen den Büros der Abgeordneten der im Bundestag vertretenen Parteien unterscheidet. Wir finden eine schwach ausgeprägte Diskriminierungsneigung bei Abgeordnetenbüros der Fraktion CDU/CSU, hingegen keine Anzeichen für Diskriminierung bei Abgeordnetenbüros von SPD, FDP, B90/Die Grünen und Die Linke. Nach Kontrolle des Lebensalters der Abgeordneten, der Bevölkerungsdichte des Wahlkreises, des Ausländeranteils in der Wahlkreisbevölkerung und, ob es sich um einen ost- oder westdeutschen Wahlkreis handelt, zeigen sich in den Modellen jedoch keine signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen den Fraktionen mehr.

Although the effects of nationalized mega-events on national identification have been theorized and examined by a number of studies, little is known about the specific mechanisms that bring about changes in people’s attitudes towards their country. The authors hypothesize that during nationwide rituals, in particular sports mega-events, participants experience collective emotional entrainment in the context of national symbols and practices that in turn increases their identification with their nation. The authors present results of a naturalistic quasi-experimental study around the 2012 uefa European Football Championship with participants from Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland. Using a multidimensional measurement of national identification, the authors show that the experience of emotional entrainment is associated with changes in symbolic, civic, and solidary facets of identification in ways specific to the different national contexts.

Zusammenfassung: Im Gegensatz zu Rache und Vergeltung ist Vergebung als zentrale Bewältigungsstrategie interpersonaler Konflikte bislang nicht zum Gegenstand der soziologischen Forschung geworden. Auf der Grundlage einer qualitativen Fallstudie widmet sich der vorliegende Beitrag daher der Frage, welche sozialen Bedeutungsdimensionen für die Vergebung nicht justiziabler Vergehen konstitutiv sind. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass mögliche Reaktionen auf solche Vergehen durch ambivalente und zum Teil widersprüchliche Verhaltenserwartungen gekennzeichnet sind, die bei Betroffenen deutliche emotionale Irritationen hervorrufen. Aus wissenssoziologischer Perspektive illustrieren wir dann am Beispiel von Interaktionsverläufen, in denen moralische Bewertungen eine zentrale Rolle spielen, dass gelingende Vergebungsakte von der Regulierung und Transformation bestimmter Emotionen abhängen. Diese Emotionen können als Referenzpunkte des Fremdverstehens im Kontext solcher Vergehen verstanden werden und legen ein Verständnis von Vergebung als genuin sozial interaktives Geschehen nahe.

The concept of habitus refers to socially stratified patterns of perception, classification, and thinking that are supposed to bring about specific lifestyles. Until now, research on the links between stratification and lifestyles has accounted for the habitus mainly in conceptual and theoretical terms, and studies directly measuring habitus and its association with stratification and lifestyles are rare. The present study conceptualizes the habitus as an individual-level pattern of meaning making and suggests an operationalization that is commonly used in identity research. Using survey data of 3,438 respondents, the study investigates associations between different lifestyles and patterns of meaning making. Results show, first, that self-related meanings vary systematically across lifestyle categories and mirror respondents' stratification position. Second, the meanings of various social concepts also vary significantly across lifestyle categories and partly reflect descriptive lifestyle characteristics. In sum, the study presents a plausible operationalization of (parts of) the habitus and advances our understanding of its mediating position between stratification and lifestyles.

Key elements of discourse on the recent economic crisis are attributions of crisis responsibility. Such attributions are assumed to have consequences for audiences’ thoughts and actions in domains relevant to the crisis. Although studies have suggested ways to conceptualize attributions of responsibility, their effects on social action remain poorly understood. This essay develops an empirically grounded theoretical model and methodological tool to reconstruct ideal-typical attributions of responsibility from discourse along the dimensions of attribution targets and attributed logics of action. It further proposes that combinations of these ideal types constitute affective framings that influence how the crisis is perceived and how an audience may act in crisis relevant domains.

Understanding the social consequences of major soccer events is important for social science researchers and policy-makers alike. On the one hand, socially integrative effects are ascribed to these events. On the other hand, they are suspected of increasing the devaluation of minorities and disadvantaged groups. Sociological theories in a Durkheimian tradition suggest that the emotional entrainment that goes along with football-related rituals might play a role. We thus investigated the effects of the World Cup 2010 on the derogation of minorities and disadvantaged groups in Germany and hypothesized that the emotional entrainment is a predictor of changes in derogation. Results of our naturalistic study show significant increases in derogative attitudes after the World Cup. Contrary to our expectations, emotional entrainment is not associated with this increase. We discuss possible alternative explanations, in particular the influence of public discourse.

Some theories suggest that collective emotions, in particular emotional entrainment as the feeling of affective attunement with others during rituals, can increase the identification with a social group. Furthermore, emotional entrainment is supposed to emotionally ‘charge’ group symbols that are part of ritual practices and influence group-related attitudes and solidarity even beyond the ritual context. This article tests these assumptions in a naturalistic study around the 2010 Football World Cup, which reliably generates emotional entrainment in a ritualized, nation-focused context. Results indicate that emotional entrainment during the tournament is a predictor of changes in national identification and the perceived emotional significance of national symbols after the tournament. Moreover, emotional entrainment partially mediates the relationship between pre- and post-World Cup national identification and the perception of national symbols.

Zusammenfassung Soziologische Theorien postulieren seit langem Zusammenhänge zwischen sozialer Ungleichheit und dem Empfinden von Emotionen. Der Vielfalt theoretischer Arbeiten steht jedoch ein Mangel an empirischen Studien gegenüber, insbesondere mit Blick auf die präzise Erfassung von Emotionen. Aus diesem Grund prüfen wir empirisch die Zusammenhänge zwischen Indikatoren sozialer Ungleichheit und der Häufigkeit des Erlebens von zwei grundlegenden und soziologisch besonders relevanten Emotionen, nämlich Angst und Ärger. Auf Grundlage von bevçlkerungsrepräsentativen Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panel (SOEP) zeigen wir mittels multivariater Analyseverfahren, dass klassische Indikatoren sozialer Ungleichheit - beispielsweise beruflicher Status, Einkommen und Qualifikationsniveau - eigenständige Beiträge zur Erklärung der Häufigkeit des Empfindens von Angst und Ärger leisten.

Zusammenfassung Der Artikel untersucht die Funktion von Emotionen in der sozialen Interaktion sowie ihren Beitrag zur Entstehung strukturierter Sozialität und der Bildung sozialer Ordnung. Er geht von der Annahme aus, dass die Emotionsentstehung einer umfassenden sozialen Prägung unterliegt und mit charakteristischen Handlungstendenzen einhergeht. Darauf aufbauend wird das Argument entwickelt, dass vor allem mimisches emotionales Ausdrucksverhalten dazu beiträgt, strukturwirksame Handlungs- bzw. Interaktionsmuster zu generieren. In einem ersten Schritt wird gezeigt, dass die Enkodierung emotionalen Ausdrucksverhaltens einerseits auf physiologischen Grundmustern beruht, andererseits aber in Abhängigkeit der sozialen Umwelt ausgeprägte „Dialekte“ entwickelt. Analog zu diesen Nuancen, so verdeutlicht der zweite Schritt, entsteht die Fähigkeit, mimisches Ausdrucksverhalten zu dekodieren. Dadurch verlaufen reziproke Attributionen von Emotion, Situationsbewertung und Handlungstendenz umso effektiver, je näher sich Akteure im sozialen Raum sind. Diese Verschränkung führt, so zeigt der dritte Schritt, zu einer präziseren interindividuellen Übertragung von Emotionen innerhalb sozialer Einheiten, die eine entsprechende interindividuelle Angleichung von Emotionen und Handlungstendenzen wahrscheinlicher macht. Auf diese Weise tragen Emotionen zur Genese strukturierter Interaktionen und zur Entstehung sozialer Ordnung bei.

Sociologists usually conceive of emotions as individual, episodic, and categorical phenomena while emphasizing their social and cultural construction. At the same time, the term emotion refers to a wide range of conceptually and ontologically distinct components and is therefore best thought of as a relatively unspecific umbrella term. This article argues that the routes leading to the social and cultural construction of emotion, for example, norms, rules, values, and discourse, are unlikely to be applicable to each of these components in the same way. This is particularly true for an element of emotion that is often portrayed as being most essential and basic and therefore to some extent avoiding the formative forces of culture and society, namely, affect. Although affect is an established notion in sociology, it has remained conceptually underdeveloped. The article therefore discusses different perspectives on affect from cultural studies that emphasize its relational and bodily character. In a second step, it contrasts and reconciles these views with existing theories of affect in sociology and social psychology and considers a number of essential characteristics that can be used to circumscribe affect and its social and cultural correlates. Finally, concepts from relational sociology are introduced and concrete examples to specify the relational character of affect and to develop an understanding of affect, that is both theoretically fruitful and conducive to empirical research, are discussed.
