The structure of polyanionic materials is conventionally known to be free of transition metal migration and structurally stable when storing/releasing sodium ions. Herein, the observation of enhanced cycling stability of a typical polyanionic cathode, Na3VCr(PO4)3 (NVCP) at lower temperature (−15 °C vs 30 °C), triggers the exploration of its structural origins with a surprising finding that the migratable nature of vanadium in NVCP leads to detrimental structural degradation of the polyanionic host upon cycling. The correlation between long range and short range structural change associated with this atomic migration is established via a strong combination of various in situ/ex situ characterization tools, revealing the essential V–to–Na1 site migration. Such transition metal migration is effectively suppressed when V atoms are pinned to their original position in the lattice by lowering the temperature. More importantly and practically, a room temperature‐based deep sodiation strategy is further developed to recover the structure. This work challenges the long‐standing assumption of the stability of the polyanionic framework structure and calls for urgent attention to the structural understanding of the NVCP system as well as strategy development for property enhancement. Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries have attracted extensive research interest due to their high energy density. Other than Li2O2 (a typical discharge product in Li–O2 batteries), LiOH has proved to be electrochemically active as an alternative product. Here we report a simple strategy to achieve a reversible LiOH‐based Li–O2 battery by using a cation additive, sodium ions, to the lithium electrolyte. Without redox mediators in the cell, LiOH is detected as the sole discharge product and it charges at a low charge potential of 3.4 V. A solution‐based reaction route is proposed, showing that the competing solvation environment of the catalyst and Li+ leads to LiOH precipitation at the cathode. It is critical to tune the cell chemistry of Li–O2 batteries by designing a simple system to promote LiOH formation/decomposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need for high-energy batteries has driven the development of binder-free electrode architectures. However, the weak bonding between the electrode particles and the current collector cannot withstand the severe volume change of active materials upon battery cycling, which largely limit the large-scale application of such electrodes. Using tin nanoarrays electrochemically deposited on copper substrate as an example, here we demonstrate a strategy of strengthening the connection between electrode and current collector by thermally alloying tin and copper at their interface. The locally formed tin-copper alloys are electron-conductive and meanwhile electrochemically inactive, working as an ideal "glue" robustly bridging tin and copper to survive harsh cycling conditions in sodium ion batteries. The working mechanism of the alloy "glue" is further characterized through a combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic structural analysis and in situ X-ray diffraction, presenting itself as a promising strategy for engineering binder-free electrode with endurable performance. Na-ion batteries have been regarded as promising alternatives for Li-ion batteries due to the extensive sodium reserves in the world. Na3V2(PO4)3 has been proved to be a good candidate of the cathode materials in Na-ion batteries but the intrinsic low electrical conductivity and sluggish kinetics handicapped its application. Here, 3D hierarchical Na3V2(PO4)3 particles are synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, constructed by carbon-coated 2D Na3V2(PO4)3 nanowalls. Superior cell performance of high rate capability and cycle stability are observed in the well-defined structure. As the cathode in Na-ion batteries, it delivers a high capacity almost reaching the theoretical one and exhibits high capacity retention. The enhanced rate capability and cycle performance can be attributed to the improved electrical conductivity from the interconnected carbon layer and the shortened ion diffusion length and high specific surface area from the nanowalls. The progress on sodium-ion battery technology faces many grand challenges, one of which is the considerably lower rate of sodium insertion/deinsertion in electrode materials due to the larger size of sodium (Na) ions and complicated redox reactions compared to the lithium-ion systems. Here, it is demonstrated that sodium ions can be reversibly stored in Zn-Sb intermetallic nanowires at speeds that can exceed 295 nm s−1. Remarkably, these values are one to three orders of magnitude higher than the sodiation rate of other nanowires electrochemically tested with in situ transmission electron micro­scopy. It is found that the nanowires display about 161% volume expansion after the first sodiation and then cycle with an 83% reversible volume expansion. Despite their massive expansion, the nanowires can be cycled without any cracking or facture during the ultrafast sodiation/desodiation process. In addition, most of the phases involved in the sodiation/desodiation process possess high electrical conductivity. More specifically, the NaZnSb exhibits a layered structure, which provides channels for fast Na+ diffusion. This observation indicates that Zn-Sb intermetallic nanomaterials offer great promise as high rate and good cycling stability anodic materials for the next generation of sodium-ion batteries.
