Abstract

The impact of model-based design on the software engineering community is impressive, and recent research in model transformations, and elegant behavioral specifications of systems has the potential to revolutionize the way in which systems are designed. Such techniques aim to raise the level of abstraction at which systems are specified, to remove the burden of producing application-specific programs with general-purpose programming. For complex real-time systems, however, the impact of model-driven approaches is not nearly so widespread. In this paper, we present a perspective of model-based design researchers who joined with software experts in robotics to enter the DARPA Urban Challenge, and to what extent model-based design techniques were used. Further, we speculate on why, according to our experience and the testimonies of many teams, the full promises of model-based design were not widely realized for the competition. Finally, we present some thoughts for the future of model-based design in complex systems such as these, and what advancements in modeling are needed to motivate small-scale projects to use model-based design in these domains.

Abstract

The article offers information on domain-specific languages and modeling (DSL&M) approach. According to the author, domain-specific tools are successful in their respective niches because they streamline development. Due to technological innovations, the newer versions of domain-specific languages (DSLs) are easier to define, which in turn increases abstraction and makes development faster. There are several factors that should be considered before using a DSL&M approach in a problem, among them are the definition of the domain and the elements of the domain.

Abstract

EConceptual modelling languages have been evaluated using ontologies as reference theories. Reference ontologies for conceptual modelling are top-level ontologies that specify conceptualizations of the real-world in general and are not restricted to any particular material domain (i.e. part of the real-world). Ontological evaluation clarifies the real-world semantics of modelling language constructs and suggests guidelines for the proper use of language constructs when modelling particular real-world situations. The guidance provided helps modellers developing conceptual schemas that can be understood as intended by schema users. In this paper an additional step is taken towards true ontology-based conceptual modelling by using more specialized ontologies, in particular ontologies that specify conceptualizations of material domains, directly during the development of conceptual schemas. Using domain ontologies instead of top-level ontologies for ontology-based conceptual modelling, enables the reuse of domain-specific knowledge. The application of domain ontologies to conceptual schema development instead of conceptual modelling language evaluation, ensures the domain-specific quality of the schemas, i.e. the satisfaction of domain-specific axioms in schemas that intend to represent particular situations within the domain of interest. This new approach to ontology-based conceptual modelling is implemented by extending existing conceptual modelling languages with domain-specific language profiles that are defined by domain ontologies. The approach is illustrated for enterprise modelling using UML and the Resource Event Agent (REA) enterprise ontology. The usefulness of the approach for the quality assurance of conceptual schemas is demonstrated by evaluating the domain-specific quality of a sample of UML class diagrams intended as enterprise models.

Abstract

The utilisation of Domain-Specific Modelling (DSM) in software development has a significant positive impact on productivity. The productivity increase is caused by the utilisation of modelling languages and generators that are especially suitable for a specific problem domain instead of those designed for solution domains. The prerequisite for this significant productivity increase is that the languages and the automation function correctly. To ensure the suitability of the languages and tools, we need to be able to use the verification and validation (V&V) techniques in the context of DSM. In this position paper we study what V&V actually stands for in this particular context and what the current means are for performing V&V. We found that although there are some means available for verification, comprehensive methods still do not exist. For validation, we believe that maintaining a bidirectional trace link between requirements, models and the generated deliverables is a promising approach to significantly facilitate the validation process.
