Selenium (Se) accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) has become a major global concern. Se offers multiple health benefits in humans; however, its inadequate or excessive intake can be harmful. Therefore, determining the factors driving Se abundance and bioavailability in paddy soils is essential to ensure the safety of human Se intake. This study investigated the accumulation, bioavailability, and distribution of Se in 820 paddy soil and rice grain samples from Luxi County, China to assess how soil properties (soil organic matter [SOM], cation exchange capacity [CEC], and pH), geographical factors (parent materials, elevation, and mean annual precipitation [MAP] and temperature [MAT]), and essential micronutrients (copper [Cu], zinc [Zn], and manganese [Mn]) govern Se accumulation and bioavailability in paddy soils. Results showed that the average soil Se content was 0.36 mg kg -1 , which was higher than that in China (0.29 mg kg -1 ). Alternatively, the average rice grain Se content was 0.032 mg kg -1 , which was lower than the minimum allowable content in Se-rich rice grains (0.04 mg kg -1 ). Five studied parent materials all had a significant effect on soil Se content but had little effect on Se bioavailability (p < 0.05). CEC, elevation, and SOM, as well as the soil contents of Cu, Zn, and Mn were positively correlated with soil Se content, but pH, MAP, and MAT were negatively correlated. Correspondingly, Se bioavailability was negatively correlated with SOM and soil Zn content, but positively correlated with MAP and grain contents of Cu, Zn, and Mn. Furthermore, partial least squares path analysis revealed the interactive impacts of the influencing factors on Se accumulation and bioavailability in soils. Guangxi, China, is one of the world's largest karst regions where potential toxic elements tend to accumulate, resulting in high soil background values. This study explores the ecological risk, elemental baseline values, and sources of potential toxic elements in karst regions, expanding the research to include 21 common elements. The significance of this research lies in its implications for the management of potential toxic element pollution, the formulation of environmental quality standards, and soil remediation in karst areas. In this study, 12,547 topsoil samples (0-20 cm) were collected in the study area. Pollution assessment and ecological risk evaluation of eight potential toxic elements (Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr, and As) were conducted using the geo-accumulation index method and potential ecological risk index method. Multivariate statistical analysis was applied to analyze the total content of 21 common elements (Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, P, Cd, Hg, Co, Mn, Cr, V, I, S, As, pH, Se, N, CaO, Corg, Mo, and F). Additionally, the potential sources of 21 soil elements were preliminarily quantitatively analyzed using the principal component analysis-absolute principal component scores-multiple linear regression receptor model. The results showed that (1) Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, V, and As were enriched in the research area and Ca, Cd, Mn, Mo, Hg, As, and Cu might have been influenced by human activities; (2) Cr, Pb, As, and Zn were generally lightly polluted, with Hg having a moderate potential ecological risk level; and (3) Ni and Zn have contributions of 37.99% and 35.07% from geological sources, agricultural fertilization, and pesticides. Mo, V, Cr, Se, Hg, and As exhibit contributions ranging from 39.44 to 59.22% originating from geological backgrounds and human activities. Corg, S, N, and P show contributions of 45.39% to 80.33% from surface vegetation. F, Co, Mn, and Pb have contributions ranging from 31.63 to 47.93% from acidic rocks in the soil parent material, mining activities, and transportation. Cd and CaO derive 31.67% and 40.23%, respectively, from soil parent material and industrial sources. Tailing disposal technologies such as dry and wet disposal methods have a profound effect on the ecosystem of mining areas. However, the chemical speciation of metal(loid)s and microbial community structure in tailings under different disposal methods are still poorly understood. Here we compared the bioavailable fraction of metal(loid)s and the microbial community in vanadium-titanium (V-Ti) magnetite tailing profiles derived from dry and wet stockpiled methods. In wet tailings, the bioavailability of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, V, and Zn was higher than that in dry tailings as identified by BCR sequential extraction. Especially for Cu and Ni, the oxidizable fraction was the predominant fraction except the residual fraction, accounting for 37.2-59.0% and 23.2-36.6% of the total concentration in wet tailings, respectively. Based on 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, totally 12 indicator bacterial taxa were detected in dry tailings against 68 in wet tailings. As the biomarkers in wet tailings, genera Sulfuricurvum, Geobacter, and Pseudomonas were expected to be applied to the transformation of metal(loid)s in the tailings. Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench was selected as a remediation plant in this study, and different concentrations of graphene oxide (GO) were added to Cd-contaminated soil. Through pot experiments, the effect of E. purpurea on Cd-contaminated soil was determined at 60 days, 120 days, and 150 days. A preliminary study on the remediation mechanism of GO was explored through changes in the forms of Cd in the rhizosphere soil, soil pH, and soil functional groups. Results showed that the optimal concentration of GO was 0.4 g/kg, and under the condition, the accumulation of Cd in the roots of E. purpurea was as high as 113.69 ± 23.86 mg/kg, and the maximum EF reached 5.87 ± 1.34. Compared with those of the control group, accumulated Cd concentration and EF in the roots increased by 60.34% and 2.32, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that the absorption and accumulation of Cd was negatively correlated with the exchangeable Cd content at 120 days, and the exchangeable Cd was negatively correlated with the relative content of functional groups in the soil with 0.4 g/kg GO (E2). The artificial application of GO to the soil can be used as an effective way to improve the effect of E. purpurea in the remediation of Cd soil pollution, and it has great application potential in the stabilization of plants and vegetations and restoration of high-concentration Cd-contaminated soil., (© 2022. Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate plant contribution during remediation of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)-contaminated soil of Dagang Oilfield by Fire Phoenix (a mixture of Festuca L.). The results showed that Fire Phoenix could grow in soil contaminated by high and low concentrations of PAHs. After being planted for 150 days, the total removal rate of six PAHs in the high and low PAH concentrations was 80.36% and 79.79%, significantly higher than the 58.79% and 53.29% of the unplanted control group, respectively. Thus, Fire Phoenix can effectively repair the soil contaminated by different concentrations of PAHs. In high concentrations of PAHs, the results indicated a positive linear relationship between PAH absorption in tissues of Fire Phoenix and the growth time in the early stage. In contrast, the contents of PAHs were just slightly increased in the late period of plant growth. The main factor for the dissipation of PAHs was plant-promoted biodegradation (99.04%-99.93%), suggesting a low contribution of PAH uptake and transformation (0.07%-0.96%). The results revealed that Fire Phoenix did not remove the PAHs in the soil by accumulation but promoted PAH dissipation in the soil by stimulating the microbial metabolism in the rhizosphere., (© 2021. With the enhancement of environmental protection awareness, research on the bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon environmental pollution has intensified. Bioremediation has received more attention due to its high efficiency, environmentally friendly by-products, and low cost compared with the commonly used physical and chemical restoration methods. In recent years, bacterium engineered by systems biology strategies have achieved biodegrading of many types of petroleum pollutants. Those successful cases show that systems biology has great potential in strengthening petroleum pollutant degradation bacterium and accelerating bioremediation. Systems biology represented by metabolic engineering, enzyme engineering, omics technology, etc., developed rapidly in the twentieth century. Optimizing the metabolic network of petroleum hydrocarbon degrading bacterium could achieve more concise and precise bioremediation by metabolic engineering strategies; biocatalysts with more stable and excellent catalytic activity could accelerate the process of biodegradation by enzyme engineering; omics technology not only could provide more optional components for constructions of engineered bacterium, but also could obtain the structure and composition of the microbial community in polluted environments. Comprehensive microbial community information lays a certain theoretical foundation for the construction of artificial mixed microbial communities for bioremediation of petroleum pollution. This article reviews the application of systems biology in the enforce of petroleum hydrocarbon degradation bacteria and the construction of a hybrid-microbial degradation system. Then the challenges encountered in the process and the application prospects of bioremediation are discussed. In this study, three dominant bacteria Cellulomonas flavigena (Ⅰ), Cellulomonas flavigena (Ⅱ), Sphingomonas paucimobilis (Ⅲ) from Fire Phoenix rhizosphere soil were used to develop a multi-microbial agent system. For oil-contaminated soil in the Dagang oilfield, the immobilized test bacteria were inoculated into the Fire Phoenix rhizosphere soil to examine the effects of bacterial agents on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil. The results showed that PAHs degradation was promoted under the ⅠⅢ (with an effective number of viable bacteria of 10 9 cfu·mL -1 ) and ⅠⅡⅢ (with an effective number of viable bacteria of 10 7 cfu·mL -1 ) treatments. The PAHs degradation rates were 32.2% and 41.4%, respectively, being significantly higher than that in the control treatments. The ⅠⅡⅢ treatment significantly promoted the belowground biomass of Fire Phoenix, which was 31.2% higher than that of the control treatment. Our results suggested that the multi-microbial agent constructed by the three dominant bacteria ⅠⅡⅢ could be used as a strengthening method for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil by Fire Phoenix, which provided a novel method for microbial enhanced phytoremediation technology.

This study investigated Fire Phoenix (Festuca L.) and Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench inoculated with a Mycobacterium strain N12 in remediation of soils contaminated with both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cadmium (Cd). Plant growth and PAH and Cd removal were monitored in 60, 120, and 150 days after transplanting. Results showed that Fire Phoenix plants grown in soil containing 200 mg/kg PAHs and 15 mg/kg Cd inoculated with N12 were able to remove 76.3% PAHs compared to removal of 68.3% of PAHs by the plants without N12 inoculation. On day 150, the underground biomass of Fire Phoenix plants grown in soil inoculated with N12 increased 59.40% compared to that without N12 inoculation. The enhanced removal of PAH by Fire Phoenix and N12 was related to the improved rhizosphere microbial activities. However, inoculation of N12 to E. purpurea grown soil did not significantly improve the removal of PAHs and Cd. Our results showed that phytoremediation of PAHs and Cd can be enhanced by a Mycobacterium strain N12, especially when PLFA concentrations of bacteria and fungi exceeded 60% of the initial concentrations, but the enhancement is plant species dependent., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest This study has no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2020. Manure, soil, and vegetable samples were collected from different-sized livestock farms in Xinxiang, China. The residues of sulfadiazine, sulfamonomethoxine, and sulfamethoxazole were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results indicated that the concentration ranges of the three total sulfonamides in manure, soil, and vegetables were 10.13-566.23 µg kg -1 , 7.60-176.26 µg kg -1 , and 0-32.70 µg kg -1 , respectively. The mean concentrations were 219.71 µg kg -1 , 70.73 µg kg -1 , and 7.08 µg kg -1 for manure, soil, and vegetables, respectively. The mean concentrations in soil were lower than the ecotoxic effect trigger value (100 µg kg -1 ), indicating a low risk for organisms in soil. The concentrations of the three sulfonamides varied significantly in different types of vegetables and all were lower than the acceptable daily intake value (50 µg (kg day) -1 ). However, the potential ecotoxicity and danger to human and animal health via accumulation of the antibiotic in the food chain cannot be ignored.

The contents and sources of 15 US EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 59 surface soil samples (0-10 cm depth) collected from six functional zones, including cultural and educational area, park, residential area, vegetable garden, gas station, and industrial area, in Yangzhou City. The toxicity equivalent content of benzo[a]pyrene (TEQ BaP ) was adopted to assess PAH risks in soils. The results showed that the contents of Σ15PAHs in soil samples ranged from 21 to 36118 μg·kg -1 , with a median value of 295 μg·kg -1 . The composition of PAHs was dominated by 4-6 ring PAHs. The average contents of Σ15PAHs in various functional zones in Yangzhou City was in the order of industrial area > gas station > cultural and educational area > vegetable garden > residential area > park. Correlation analysis showed that the contents of Σ15PAHs were significantly positively correlated with the contents of both TOC ( P <0.05) and BC ( P <0.01) in soil samples from whole Yangzhou City. However, the contents of Σ15PAHs had no significant correlations with the contents of both TOC and BC in soil samples within each functional zone except gas station, in which the contents of Σ15PAHs had a significant correlation with those of BC ( P <0.01). The results of PAH ratios showed that the sources of PAHs in soils of various functional zones were mainly from oil leakage and the combustion of oil, coal, and biomass, although there were some differences among them. The values of ΣTEQ BaP of 15 PAHs ranged from 2 to 4448 μg·kg -1 in the soil samples of Yangzhou City. According to the standard value of 33 μg·kg -1 of ΣTEQ BaP for 10 PAHs in the soil environmental standard of Netherland, 45.8% of soil samples exceeded the standard in Yangzhou City. The percentages of soil samples exceeding the standard of various functional zones in Yangzhou City were in the order of industrial area (70%) > gas station (60%) > cultural and educational area (55.6%) > vegetable garden (50.0%) > residential area (30%) > park (10%). Hence, in all the functional zones of Yangzhou City, there were some soil samples with potential ecological risks, which was relatively higher in industrial area and gas station, and relatively lower in residential area and park.

Pot experiments were conducted in a growth chamber to evaluate the phytoremediation efficiency and rhizosphere regulation mechanism of Fire Phoenix (a mixture of Festuca L.) in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-cadmium (PAH-Cd) co-contaminated soils. Plant biomass, removal rates of PAHs and Cd, soil enzyme activity, and soil bacterial community were determined. After 150 days of planting, the removal rates of the total 4 PAHs and Cd reached 64.57% and 40.93% in co-contaminated soils with low-PAH (104.79-144.87 mg·kg -1 ), and 68.29% and 25.40% in co-contaminated soils with high-PAH (169.17-197.44 mg·kg -1 ), respectively. The polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity decreased in soils having Fire Phoenix, while the dehydrogenase (DHO) activity increased as the changes of DHO activity had a strong positive correlation with the removal rates of PAHs and Cd in the low-PAH soils (r = 0.862 (P < 0.006) and 0.913 (P < 0.002), respectively). Meanwhile, successional changes in the bacterial communities were detected using high-throughput 454 Gs-FLX pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA, and these changes were especially apparent for the co-contaminated soils with the low PAH concentration. The Fire Phoenix could promote the growth of Mycobacterium, Dokdonella, Gordonia and Kaistobacter, which played important roles in PAHs degradation or Cd dissipation. Sugarcane is a potential species for use in heavy metal remediation. To analyze the effect of excess copper on sugarcane, the biomass, mineral nutrient content and activities of antioxidative enzymes were measured under copper stress. The results revealed that the biomass of roots and shoots significantly decreased with increasing copper concentration in solution. Most copper accumulated in the roots, and the translocation factor of copper decreased with an increase in copper stress. The MDA content in sugarcane roots notably increased under copper stress. The POD activity in sugarcane roots increased, and CAT activity decreased under copper stress. The Zn, Fe and Mn contents in shoots increased significantly under 200 μmol L -1 Cu 2+ treatments. The Zn and Mg contents in roots notably decreased under copper stress, while the Zn and Mg translocation factors increased. These results indicated that the increase in POD activity and the modification of mineral nutrient uptake and transfer might play an important role in reducing the detrimental effects of excess copper.

The effects of Fire Phoenix (a mixture of Festuca L.) and Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench) on the remediation of two different high concentrations of PAH-contaminated soils were studied under the effect of strain N12 (Mycobacterium sp.), and the changes in rhizosphere enzymatic activity were preliminarily studied. The results of three culture stages (60 d, 120 d, and 150 d) showed that N12 has a promotional effect on the biomass of Fire Phoenix and E. purpurea, and the effect of N12 on the biomass of Fire Phoenix is better. Under the strengthening of N12, the maximum removal rates of Fire Phoenix reached 86.77% and 67.82% at two high PAH concentrations (A and B, respectively). The activity of dehydrogenase (DHO) is positively correlated with the degradation rate of PAHs at the A concentration (P < 0.05). The activity of DHO in soil will continue to increase at a higher level of the B concentration, but the positive correlation between the activity of DHO and the degradation rate of PAH is weakened. In the rhizosphere soil of the two plants, the change in polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity with time has a significant negative correlation with the degradation rate of PAHs (P < 0.05). The experiment proved that Fire Phoenix is more suitable for the remediation of heavy PAH-contaminated soil under the condition of microorganism-strengthening, and it can achieve a better degradation effect when the concentrations of PAHs are < 150 mg·kg -1 . Results provide a further scientific basis for the remediation of contaminated sites.

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a natural bio-mediated process, which has been explored for soil stabilization and heavy metals immobilization in soil and groundwater. Previous studies have shown that MICP is capable of immobilizing various heavy metals including lead (Pb). However, most studies focus merely on the immobilization of heavy metals with relatively low concentration. This study: (1) presents results of an investigation into the toxic effects of Pb on bacterial activity and immobilization efficiency within a wide range of Pb concentrations; and (2) identifies controlling biotic and abiotic factors of Pb immobilization by MICP. In the first series of tests, bacterial strains (Sporosarcina pasteurii) are inoculated into nutrient solutions containing 0-50 mM Pb(NO 3 ) 2 and incubated at 30 °C. Biochemical parameters are measured over time, which include pH, electrical conductivity, urease activity, and viable cell number. In the second series of tests, grown bacterial strains are mixed with urea, calcium salts and Pb(NO 3 ) 2 in solution. Viable cell number, produced ammonium concentration, aqueous Pb concentration of the mixed solution, and total precipitation mass are measured. The results show that the presence of Pb has marginal effect on bacterial growth and associated urease activity at Pb concentration < 30 mM. The calcium source and initial bacteria concentration are found to remarkably influence Pb immobilization efficiency in terms of Pb removal percentage. Pollution of agricultural soils by pesticides, such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), can be a significant issue since high detection rates of these compounds were reported in our previous studies. However, more uncertain kinds, quantities and density of pollutants remained in soil samples were unidentified. In this study, the total hormonal activities of complex mixtures of both known and unknown contaminants in agricultural soils in mainland China were measured by applying highly sensitive reporter gene assays for detecting agonists/antagonists for estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), progesterone receptor (PR), glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). High detection rates of estrogenic activities and anti-progestogenic activities were observed among the 123 soil samples, reaching 79% and 73%, respectively. More than half of the soil samples showed obvious antagonistic effects against AR and GR. Approximately a third of tested samples exhibited androgenic, progestogenic and glucocorticoidic effects. A total of 72% and 78% soil extracts had mineralocorticoid-like and anti-mineralocorticoid activities, respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed between estrogenic activity and the concentrations of Σdichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), Σendosulfans, Σchlordanes, heptachlor and Σdrins, respectively, but not other receptors. As a rapid and convenient pre-caution method, determination of endocrine-disrupting potencies of contaminated soils via bioassay could help to identify and define sites that required further attention for ecological risk assessments., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Urbanization processes affect the accumulation of heavy metals in urban soils. Effects of urbanization on heavy metal accumulation in soils were studied using Beijing as an example. It has been suggested that the ecological function of vegetation covers shifting from natural to agricultural settings and then to urban greenbelts could increase the zinc (Zn) concentrations of soils successively. The Zn concentration of urban soils was significantly correlated to the percentage of the impervious land surface at the 500m×500m spatial scale. For urban parks, the age or years since the development accounted for 80% of the variances of cadmium (Cd) and Zn in soils. The population density, however, did not affect the heavy metal distributions in urban soils. This is the first investigation into both soil and crop contamination and associated health risks by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in industrial areas of the Yangtze River Delta region (YRDR). Soil and crop samples were collected from farmland surrounded by three typical industries (a steelworks [SW], a petrochemical facility [PF] and a power plant [PP]), and the concentrations and health risks of PAHs in soils and crops were evaluated. The average concentrations of 16 USEPA priority PAHs in surface soil and subsoil were 471.30 μg kg -1 and 341.40 μg kg -1 , respectively. The respective average concentrations of 16 PAHs in amaranth, spinach, Chinese chive, and rice tissues were 1710.49, 1176.96, 1218.36 and 352.12 μg kg -1 . Based on both the results of a principal component analysis (PCA) and the PAH ratios, the main sources of the PAHs in soils were determined to be the combustion of coal and petroleum. The total values of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for males induced by both soils and crops were 2.19 × 10 -4 , 2.53 × 10 -4 , and 9.17 × 10 -4 , and for females were 2.21 × 10 -4 , 2.50 × 10 -4 , and 9.68 × 10 -4 for childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, respectively. Soils contaminated with PAHs posed a lower risk than crops, but the ILCR values, 4.40 × 10 -5 and 3.82 × 10 -5 for males and females, was still much higher than the baseline value. Accumulations of heavy metals in urban soils are highly spatial heterogeneity and affected by multiple factors including soil properties, land use and pattern, population and climatic conditions. We studied accumulation risks of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in unban soils of Beijing and their influencing based on the regression tree analysis and a GIS-based overlay model. Result shows that Zinc causes the most extensive soil pollution and Cu result in the most acute soil pollution. The soil's organic carbon content and CEC and population growth are the most significant factors affecting heavy metal accumulation. Other influence factors in land use pattern, urban landscape, and wind speed also contributed, but less pronounced. The soils in areas with higher degree of urbanization and surrounded by intense vehicular traffics have higher accumulation risk of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. A pot experiment was performed to study the effectiveness of remediation using different plant species and the enzyme response involved in remediating PAH-contaminated soil. The study indicated that species Echinacea purpurea, Festuca arundinacea Schred, Fire Phoenix (a combined F. arundinacea), and Medicago sativa L. possess the potential for remediation in PAH-contaminated soils. The study also determined that enzymatic reactions of polyphenol oxidase (except Fire Phoenix), dehydrogenase (except Fire Phoenix), and urease (except Medicago sativa L.) were more prominent over cultivation periods of 60d and 120d than 150d. Urease activity of the tested species exhibited prominently linear negative correlations with alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen content after the tested plants were cultivated for 150d (R2 = 0.9592). The experiment also indicated that alkaline phosphatase activity in four of the five tested species (Echinacea purpurea, Callistephus chinensis, Festuca arundinacea Schred and Fire Phoenix) was inhibited during the cultivation process (at 60d and 120d). At the same time, the study determined that the linear relationship between alkaline phosphatase activity and effective phosphorus content in plant rhizosphere soil exhibited a negative correlation after a growing period of 120d (R2 = 0.665). Phytoremediation of organic contaminants in the soil was closely related to specific characteristics of particular plant species, and the catalyzed reactions were the result of the action of multiple enzymes in the plant rhizosphere soil.

The rhizosphere effect of a special phytoremediating species known as Fire Phoenix on the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated, including changes of the enzymatic activity and microbial communities in rhizosphere soil. The study showed that the degradation rate of Σ8PAHs by Fire Phoenix was up to 99.40% after a 150-day culture. The activity of dehydrogenase (DHO), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) increased greatly, especially after a 60-day culture, followed by a gradual reduction with an increase in the planting time. The activity of these enzymes was strongly correlated to the higher degradation performance of Fire Phoenix growing in PAH-contaminated soils, although it was also affected by the basic characteristics of the plant species itself, such as the excessive, fibrous root systems, strong disease resistance, drought resistance, heat resistance, and resistance to barren soil. The activity of polyphenoloxidase (PPO) decreased during the whole growing period in this study, and the degradation rate of Σ8PAHs in the rhizosphere soil after having planted Fire Phoenix plants had a significant (R(2)=0.947) negative correlation with the change in the activity of PPO. Using an analysis of the microbial communities, the results indicated that the structure of microorganisms in the rhizosphere soil could be changed by planting Fire Phoenix plants, namely, there was an increase in microbial diversity compared with the unplanted soil. In addition, the primary advantage of Fire Phoenix was to promote the growth of flora genus Gordonia sp. as the major bacteria that can effectively degrade PAHs., (Crown Copyright © 2013. This study investigated the impacts of two best management practices (BMPs) recommended by US Environmental Protection Agency on Pb weathering and leachability in shooting range soils. The two BMPs included replacing soil berm with sand berm and periodically removing bullets or shot from a berm. A column experiment corresponding to the first BMP was conducted by mixing the bullets with sand/soil, or placing bullets on the surface of sand/soil. After a 16-18-week incubation under high or low rainfall simulations, total Pb concentrations in sand were lower than that in soil. Total leachable Pb in sand (8.48 and 5.52 μg kg(-1)) was also lower than that in soil (60.0 and 30.4 μg kg(-1)) when bullets were mixed with sand/soil; however, they were comparable when bullets were placed on the sand/soil surface. These results indicate that lower Pb concentration in the sand than in soil may be attributed to reduced weathering of bullets. Mechanical removal of Pb bullets in the field transferred Pb from large to finer particles, increasing total Pb in the soil (<2 mm) from 2,170 to 5,000 mg kg(-1). In contrast, mechanical removal of Pb shot effectively reduced the shot in the soil by 86-92 %. Thus, we concluded that, while replacing soil berm with sand berm can slow down Pb weathering, it may increase Pb leachability in the long term. Removal of Pb bullets and Pb shot can be effective, but caution needs to be exercised to minimize the adverse impacts, especially in pistol/rifle ranges because of increased total Pb content in the soil.

According to the conditions of a contaminated soil and groundwater remediation site in Shanghai, the self-built electronic nose was applied to detect VOCs and odor of previously remedied soil and groundwater, remedying soil and groundwater, and the air above and around the site. Combining the formula of TPI and OPI, the value of each point was got and was shown in figures. Results showed: 1. Comparing the determination results of previously remedied with remedying contaminated soil and groundwater, the concentration of TVOC and odor was overall declined. The result was consistent with the fact. The detection result of electronic nose was proved to be right; 2. In the remediation process of soil and groundwater, the volatilization of VOCs and odor was inflected by temperature and works of crushing, adding medicine and turning the soil on time. The concentration showed a trend of overall decline with stage rising, so the electronic noses can be used for dynamic monitoring of the whole remediation process; 3. Combined with the GIS, the electronic noses can preliminary assess space pollution situation caused by the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater and the influence on the residence in the surrounding region. However, further study on the refined classification of the impact degree is needed.

A pretreament device was implemented for removing the interference of humidity on the baseline signal response of sensors in an electronic nose, which was used for rapid detection and real-time monitoring of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs) pollution in soil. The desiccant material was optimized, and the humidity removal performance and adsorpiton of VCHs was studied. The pretreatment device was evaluated by both the electronic nose and gas chromatography (GC) for its applicability in monitoring the PCE concentration in the desorption gas during the soil ventilation process. The following results were obtained: 1) A desiccant tube with anhydrous calcium chloride followed by a halogenated hydrocarbon separation tube was the best device, with a humidity removal rate of over 99%, and the baseline values of each sensor in the electronic nose were close to that of the control. 2) The desiccant device described above could continuously remove almost all the humidity from air with 75% humidity within 90 min, and the humidity removal rate remained above 95% within 120 min, while little interference was observed on the baseline of each sensor. 3) Little adsorption was observed by the pretreatment device, the relative error being only 3% - 5% between the concentration of VCHs before and after the filtration by the pretreatment device. 4) When applied for monitoring the remediation progress in a soil ventilation process, 99% of humidity was removed within 120 min from air with humidity of over 98%, and the data determined with the electronic nose and GC fitted each other very well, with R2 > 0.99. From the above, the pretreatment device connected with the electronic nose was considered to be applicable for monitoring the soil remediation process.

Adsorption is one of the principal mechanisms for soil contamination by volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs). Dynamic adsorption experiments were carried out to study the equilibrium adsorption of four common VCHs pollutants onto eight typical soils in China. Results showed that dry soils had far greater adsorption capacity than humid soils. The soil adsorption capacity sharply decreased with the increase in the soil water content, and then reached a plateau as the water content rose to 10% or above. The adsorption isotherms of trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (MC) could be fitted with Henry's equation, while the adsorption isotherms of 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA) could be fitted with Freundlich model. The adsorption capacities of VCHs on humid soils were principally influenced by the content of soil organic carbon (SOC), but sometimes also impacted by the composition of SOC and the polarities of the VCHs molecules. Low polar molecules such as TCE and PCE showed adsorption capacities positively dependent on the SOC content. High polar molecules such as MC and 1,1,2-TCA displayed adsorption behavior not only influenced by SOC content but also by the SOC composition of high SOC content soils such as black soil. An adsorption equilibrium simulation model was developed for TCE and PCE on humid soils, the predicted values correlating well with the measured values (n = 80, R2 = 0.98).

An electronic nose principally composed of a photo ionization detector (PID) was developed for rapid detection of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs) in contaminated soil. Removal of interference gas such as benzene homologues with a pre-filtration tube was analyzed with gas chromatography (GC). A standard gas generator was applied to generate different concentrations of perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) gas, with which the determine precision and reproducibility of the electronic nose were evaluated by comparison with GC. Finally, simulated contamination soil with three typical paddy soils in Yangtze river delta region were used for ventilation purification experiments, the change of VCHs concentrations in the ventilation gas was monitored, based on which the applicability of the electronic nose was evaluated for on-line detection of the on-going of the ventilation purification process. Results showed that a halogenated hydrocarbon RAE-SEP tube was effective to remove interference gas, with 80%-97% of benzene homologues such as benzene and ethyl benzene being removed while more than 90% of VCHs passed through. With PCE or TCE gas, a linear dependence was derived between the data determined with the electronic nose and GC, the linear slope being 1.012 and R2 > 0.99. The electronic nose showed data consistent with GC (R2 > 0.99, n = 47) when applied for monitoring the remediation progress in a soil ventilation process. The electronic nose is therefore possibly applicable for rapid determination of soil pollution by VCHs, improving the efficiency of pollution diagnosis and remediation.

Adsorption is one of the principal mechanisms of soil contamination by volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs). Three typical paddy soils were collected from Yangtze Delta Region, onto which the equilibrium adsorption of six VCHs was studied under dry conditions using static equilibrium adsorption experiments. Results showed that the equilibrium adsorption isotherms of dry soils did not fit the Langmuir equation or BET equation, but could be well fitted the Dubinin-Astakhov equation (R2 > 0.95). Parameters of the Dubinin-Astakhov equation were influenced by the characteristics of soils and VCHs. The affinity coefficients (beta) were not significant influenced by the molecular volumes of VCHs but tended to increase along with the increase in the molecular polarities. The adsorption energies (E0) of the reference compound (tetrachloroethylene) positively correlated to the pore volume with radius below the average (V(< average pore radius)), while poorly related to the average pore radius of the soil. The maximum adsorption volumes of VCHs onto dry soils (W0) showed linear relationship to the pore volume with radius less than 10 nm (V(< 10nm)), while poorly correlated to the specific surface area of the soil. The Dubinin-Astakhov equation, a function of V < average pore radius), V(<10nm) and beta, could be used to predict the equilibrium adsorbed amounts of VCHs onto the dry soils. The predicted values strongly correlated with the measured values (R2 = 0.98).

Surface soil samples from 36 sampling sites including different functional areas in seven districts of Shenyang, China were collected and analyzed. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in soil of Shenyang were up to 0.42, 51.26, 75.29 and 140.02mg/kg, respectively, which are much higher than their natural background values. Among the functional areas and administrative regions, the industrial regions and the Tiexi District displayed the highest metal concentrations. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that there existed close correlations among Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn (except for Cd-Cu) at 1% level. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) coupled with correlation between heavy metals revealed that heavy metal contamination might originate from traffic and industrial activities. The values of pollution index (PI) and integrated pollution index (IPI) indicated that metal pollution level was Pb>Cd>Zn>Cu, and Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn belong to moderate or high pollution level. Potential ecological risk indexes (RI) further indicated that Shenyang was suffering from serious metal contamination. These results are important for the development of proper management strategies to decrease non-point source pollution by various remediation practices in Shenyang, China.

Bidens pilosa L. has been identified as a newly found Cd-hyperaccumulator. In the present study, the characteristics of its Cd tolerance (growth response and physiological and biochemical characteristics) and accumulation were examined. The results showed that low Cd treatments (< or =32 mg/kg) could enhance plant growth, the dry biomass of shoot and root increased by 32.4%-44.7% and 29.1%-57.6%, respectively, at Cd concentrations 8-32 mg/kg when compared with the control. The shoot dry biomass reached a maximum of 0.22 g/pot at a concentration 8 mg/kg of Cd. Meanwhile, under different Cd treatments, chlorophyll (Chl) and soluble protein contents in leaves slightly decreased, resulting in 23.3% and 41.5% reduction, respectively, compared with the control. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) firstly decreased and then increased with increasing Cd concentration. Peroxidase (POD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents increased with increasing Cd concentration, with 1.2-6.6 and 1.1-1.5 times increase, respectively, relative to the control. However, the definite negative effects on the plant growth and characteristics of physiology and biochemistry were observed at higher Cd concentrations (50-100 mg/kg). In gradual experiments, the values of bioaccumulation and translocation were more than 1.0, furthermore, the concentration of Cd in shoots reached 119.1 mg/kg at the soil Cd level of 100 mg/kg, showing B. pilosa has the basic characteristics of a Cd-hyperaccumulator. The results above indicated that B. pilosa has strong capacity of Cd tolerance and accumulation, so it has potential and valuable application to phytoremediation of contaminated soils by Cd.

The pot-culture experiment and field studies were conducted to screen out and identify cadmium (Cd) excluders from 40 Chinese cabbage genotypes for food safety. The results of the pot-culture experiment indicated that the shoot Cd concentrations under three treatments (1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 mg Cd kg(-1) Soil) varied significantly (p<0.05), with average values of 0.70, 3.07 and 5.83 mg kg(-1), respectively. The Cd concentrations in 12 cabbage genotypes were lower than 0.50 mg kg(-1). The enrichment factors (EFs) and translocation factors (TFs) in 8 cabbage genotypes were lower than 1.0. The field studies further identified Lvxing 70 as a Cd-excluder genotype (CEG), which is suitable to be planted in low Cd-contaminated soils (Cd concentration should be lower than 1.25 mg kg(-1)) for food safety.

Based on some foreign standards of soil PAHs assessment, regional environment risk assessment of topsoil PAHs in Tianjin Area was discussed using the method of indicator Kriging. The results using different standards are also compared. It is shown that Bap is the only one component which exceeds the preliminary remedial goals and risk based concentration of U.S. in Tianjin area and the regions of exceeding standards are about 8.12% and 2.34% respectively. Most components of soil PAHs in Tianjin area are exceed the standard of Holland. The regions of exceeding standard are mostly 90% except the components of Ant (5.26%) and Bas (68.42%). Otherwise, the regions of exceeding Canada standard are mostly under 5% except Nap (97.89%), Phe (56.84%) and Pyr (47.65%). Based on the Soil Plan Zealand of Denmark, Nap is the only one component which exceeds the standard in Tianjin area and the region is about 9.26%. Comparing these risk distribution maps and spatial distribution maps of PAHs, it is found that the areas with high risk are mainly fallen in the areas with high concentrations of PAHs. The probability maps of PAHs risk are helpful for regional environmental management and planning.

On the basis of other scholars' researches, utilizes export coefficient model, adopts RS and GIS techniques, estimates the non-point source (NPS) pollution load of upper reach of Yangtze River Basin, and simulates its special distribution. The results indicates that the total nitrogen load caused by land use drop from 1.23 x 10(6) tons in 1970s' to 1.16 x 10(6) tons in 2000 on the premise of taking no account of basin loss. It reduced year by year basically in the past several decades and so did TP load which decreased from 3.7 x 10(4) tons in 1970s' to 3.5 x 10(4) tons in 2000. As far as province, land use and water system are considered, Sichuan province, crop land grass, Jinsha river and Jialing river are important contributories of NPS pollution load in study area. Intensity analysis shows the region of Chongqing municipality and the watershed of Jialing River are two highest NPS pollution load areas, and these areas should be gained more attention in the future. Using the method put forward in this paper, NPS pollution space simulation is carried out in large scale basin such as upper reach of Yangtze River Basin precisely basically.

How to increase the efficiency of chemical flushing and decrease the remediation expenses of contaminated soils are two key scientific and technological issues to be solved. Joint chemical flushing was tested and compared with the water-flushing. The joint acid-flushing could effectively remove petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated aquorizem and the dosage of washing powder as a flushing agent was greatly reduced, thereby, saving approximately 1200 US dollars of expenses relative to the water-flushing. The joint salt-flushing could be an optimal method for the cleanup of meadow burozem contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons under the experimental conditions. Moreover, the amount of surfactant remained in the two washed soils after the joint acid-flushing and the joint-salt-flushing was minimal.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in soil have serious latent danger to our human health. Based on the sampling data, the spatial scale-dependent correlations of PAHs content and some soil properties are analyzed by Factorial Kriging for top soil in Tianjin area. Based on 1 88 topsoil samples in Tianjin area, pH, TOC, CLAY and sum of 16prior PAHs are tested. Resultsshow that significant difference on spatial correlations at different spatial scales between the PAHs content and soil properties such as pH, TOC and CLAY existed in the studies area.
