The soil contamination around smelting sites shows high spatial heterogeneity. This study investigated the impacts of distance, land use/cover types, land slopes, wind direction, and soil properties on the distribution and ecological risk of trace metals in the soil around a copper smelter. The results demonstrated that the average concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were 248.0, 16.8, 502.4, 885.6, and 250.2 g mg kg−1, respectively, higher than their background values. The hotspots of trace metals were primarily distributed in the soil of smelting production areas, runoff pollution areas, and areas in the dominant wind direction. The concentrations of trace metals decreased with the distance to the smelting production area. An exponential decay regression revealed that, depending on the metal species, the influence distances of smelting emissions on trace metals in soil ranged from 450 to 1000 m. Land use/cover types and land slopes significantly affected trace element concentrations in the soil around the smelter. High concentrations of trace metals were observed in farmland, grassland, and flatland areas. The average concentrations of trace metals in the soil decreased in the order of flat land > gentle slope > steep slope. Soil pH values were significantly positively correlated with Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As, and SOM was significantly positively correlated with Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soil. Trace metals in the soil of the study area posed a significant ecological risk. The primary factors influencing the distribution of ecological risk, as determined by the Ctree analysis, were land slope, soil pH, and distance to the source. In this work, the removal performance of three environmentally friendly reagents, oxalic acid (OA), citric acid (CA), and a copolymer of maleic and acrylic acid (PMAA), on heavy metals in polluted soil was studied at the optimum conditions and compared their sequenced performance. The results showed that the consecutive washing with the individual acids significantly improved the removal percentage of heavy metals in the soil compared to that of EDTA (10.2%, 71.3%, 29.8%, 61.6%, and 52.4% removal for As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, respectively). The removal of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the sequence of CA-OA was 65.6%, 79%, 59.1%, 64.6%, and 63.5%, respectively. In addition, the organic acids had little influence on the soil physicochemical properties after washing with slight reductions of acidity (pH) and soil organic matter (SOM), which are the major determinants of the usability of washed soils for plant growth. The germination rate of Sorghum bicolor in CA-OA-washed soils reached over 70% on the 7th day. CA-OA-washed soils collectively stand out in using washed soils for plant growth with the following advantages: simultaneous removal of cationic and anionic metals, less harmful impact on soil properties, and successful support for the germination of crops. Broussonetia papyrifera, is a promising fast-growing woody plant for the phytoremediation of heavy metal(loid) (HM)-contaminated soil. In this study, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to explore the tolerance capacities of B. papyrifera and its phytoremediation potential in the HM-contaminated soil. The results indicated that B. papyrifera could effectively decrease malondialdehyde (MDA) content by enhancing the antioxidant enzyme activities along with the cultivation in the HM-contaminated soil. Significant (p < 0.05) negative relationships were found between MDA content and superoxide dismutase (r = –0.620) and catalase activities (r = –0.702) in B. papyrifera leaves. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis indicated that the main functional groups in B. papyrifera roots were slightly influenced by HMs, and organic acids, carbohydrates, protein, and amino acids might bind with HMs in plant roots to alleviate the adverse effect of HMs on plants growth. Meanwhile, B. papyrifera had great potential used for the phytoextraction of Cd and Zn in HM-contaminated soil. The maximum total Cd and Zn accumulation amount in B. papyrifera shoots could attach to 2.26 and 66.8 mg·pot−1, respectively. These observations suggested that B. papyrifera has large biomass and high tolerance to HMs, which can be regarded as a promising plant for the eco-remediation of HM-contaminated sites. Woody plants have considerable application potential in the phytoremediation schemes, owing to their long-lived large biomass and prosperous root systems in heavy metal(loid)–contaminated soil. Under greenhouse conditions, the physiological response characteristics and phytoremediation possibility of Morus alba L. and its associated improvement of the bacterial and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) diversities in heavy metal(loid) co-contaminated soils were investigated. The results showed that the cultivated M. alba L. plant exhibited significant tolerance against the heavy metal(loid)s in co-contaminated soil and that the microbial diversities were improved notably. The contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) in M. alba L. leaves decreased with cultivation from 90 to 270 days, while the superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activities were maintained at normal levels to eliminate the production of lipid peroxides. The chemical compositions (e.g. amino acids, carbohydrates and proteins) in the root of M. alba L. fluctuated slightly throughout the cultivation period. Meanwhile, Cd, Pb and Zn were majorly concentrated in the M. alba L. roots, and the maximum contents were 23.4, 7.40 and 615.5 mg/kg, respectively. According to the polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis results, the influence of M. alba L. on the rhizosphere AMF community was greater than that on the bacteria community. Meanwhile, the bacterial and AMF Shannon diversity indexes in the contaminated soil were enhanced by 18.7–22.0% and 7.14–16.4%, respectively, with the presence of M. alba L. Furthermore, the correlations between the availability of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn and Shannon diversity indexes of the bacterial and AMF communities were significantly (p < 0.05) positive with the phytoremediation of M. alba L. Therefore, M. alba L. can be suggested as a potential plant candidate for ecological remediation and for simultaneously improving the activity and diversity of microorganisms in contaminated soils. A field experiment was performed to study the effects of mixed amendments, namely lime + organic fertilizer (LO), lime + organic fertilizer + calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer (LOC), lime + organic fertilizer + sepiolite (LOS), and lime + organic fertilizer + calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer + sepiolite (LOCS), on the availability and uptake of Cd from contaminated paddy soil under a rice-rape (Oryza sativa L. and Brassica napus L.) rotation system. The results showed that the grain yields of rice and rape with mixed amendment-treated were slightly influenced, in that the soil pH significantly increased while the DTPA-extractable Cd content of the soil and Cd uptake by the rice and rape were significantly reduced. The uptake of Cd by brown rice decreased significantly (p < 0.05), by 55.9–59.3% and 69.6–75.5% in the 2016 and 2017 crops, respectively, compared with that of the control (CK). The Cd uptake by rapeseeds during the 2017 season observably (p < 0.05) decreased by 38.2 and 29.6% under LO and LOC treatments, respectively. The Cd concentrations in rapeseeds were 0.11–0.18 mg kg−1 under all the treatments except LOCS treatment, which is lower than the National Standard of Pollutants in Food of China (GB 2762-2017, 0.2 mg kg−1). From both economic and food safety standpoints, rape is recommended for Cd-contaminated soil because it has a low Cd accumulation ability. The results showed that the rice-rape rotation combined with LO or LOC application was useful for reducing the Cd content in both rice and rape in Cd-contaminated soil and the effects could be sustained at least for three crop seasons. Abstract The effects of the continuous amendments with lime (L), lime mixed with organic manure (LO), or phosphate fertilizer (LP) on the soil bacterial community, soil available cadmium (Cd) content, and Cd accumulation in rice planted in a Cd contaminated paddy soil were determined through a four-season field experiment. The results showed that with continuous application of amendments during the four seasons, the soil pH increased significantly compared with the control, while the soil available Cd content significantly decreased by 12.9–18.2%, 13.1–17.3% and 0.09–23.2% under the L, LO, or LP treatments, and the Cd content of rice was significantly reduced by 28.5–56.2%, 37.6–53.4%, and 31.2–44.6%, respectively. The rice Cd content in each season at amendment treatments was lower than the National Food Safety Standard of China (maximum level of Cd in grains is 0.2 mg/kg). The diversity and richness of soil bacteria significantly increased after the continuous amendments in soil for four-season cropping. Soil pH and available Cd content were important factors for soil bacterial community. Lime mixed with phosphate fertilizer or organic manure had been characterized by a significant increase of Proteobacteria , Nitrospirae , and Chloroflexi and a decrease of Acidobacteria based on an Illumina Miseq sequencing analysis. The results indicate that the continuous application of lime mixed with organic manure or phosphate fertilizer is a very important measure to ensure the quality safety of rice and improve soil quality in a Cd-contaminated paddy. Abstract Tree-herb co-planting is regarded as an ecologically sustainable approach for the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil. In this study, two herb species, Pteris vittata L. and Arundo donax L., and two woody species, Morus alba L. and Broussonetia papyrifera L., were selected for the tree-herb co-planting, and their impacts on the changing of microbial community structure in metal(loid)-contaminated soil were studied by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the microbial diversity was stably maintained by the tree-herb interactions, while the composition of the microbial community was clearly affected in metal(loid)-contaminated soil. According to the Venn and flower diagrams, heat map and principal coordinate analysis, both plant monocultures and co-planting had specific microbial community structures, which suggested that the composition and abundance of bacterial communities varied between plant monoculture and tree-herb co-planting treatments. In particular, A. donax L. played a vital role in increasing the abundances of Cyanobacteria (>1%) in metal(loid)-contaminated soil when co-planted with woody plants. Furthermore, some specific microorganisms combined with plants played a key role in improving enzyme activity in the contaminated soil. Correspondingly, sucrase and acid phosphatase activities in monoculture and co-planting treatments significantly (p < 0.05) increased by 1.05–3.37 and 7.24–20.3 times. These results indicated that the rhizospheric interactions in the tree-herb co-planting system positively affected the soil microbes and had stronger impacts on the composition of soil microorganisms, which was closely related to the improvement of the biological quality in the metal(loid)-contaminated soil. Stream sediments from mine area are a converging source of water and soil pollution. The risk and development trends of metal(loid)s pollution in sediments from an abandoned arsenic-containing mine were studied using modelling techniques. The results showed that the combined techniques of geographic information system (GIS), random forest (RF), and numerical simulation (NS) could identify risk sources and diffusion trends of metal(loid)s in mine sediments. The median values of As, Cd, Hg, and Sb in sediments were 5.01, 3.02, 5.67, and 3.20 times of the background values of stream sediments in China, respectively. As (14.09%) and Hg (18.64%) pollution in mine stream sediments were severe while As is the main potential risk source with a strong spatial correlation. High-risk blocks were concentrated in the landfill area, with the surrounding pollution shows a decreasing trend of "step-type" pollution. The risk correlation between Hg and As (55.37%) in the landfill area is high. As a case of arsenic, the diffusion capacity of As within 500m is strong and stabilizes at 1 km when driven by the flows of 0.05, 0.5, and 5 m3/s, respectively. With the worst-case scenario flow (86 m3/s), it would take only 147 days for the waters within 3 km to become highly polluted. The high pollution levels in a stream under forecast of different distance intervals (500, 1500, 2000 m) within 6.5 km is arrived at approximate 344, 357, and 384 days, respectively. In a greenhouse experiment, five ornamental plants, Osmanthus fragrans (OF), Ligustrum vicaryi L. (LV), Cinnamomum camphora (CC), Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum (LC), and Euonymus japonicas cv. Aureo-mar (EJ), were studied for the ability to phytostabilization for Cd-contaminated soil. The results showed that these five ornamental plants can grow normally when the soil Cd content is less than 24.6 mg·kg−1. Cd was mainly deposited in the roots of OF, LV, LC and EJ which have grown in Cd-contaminated soils, and the maximum Cd contents reached 15.76, 19.09, 20.59 and 32.91 mg·kg−1, respectively. For CC, Cd was mainly distributed in the shoots and the maximum Cd content in stems and leaves were 12.5 and 10.71 mg·kg−1, however, the total amount of Cd in stems and leaves was similar with the other ornamental plants. The enzymatic activities in Cd-contaminated soil were benefited from the five tested ornamental plants remediation. Soil urease and sucrase activities were improved, while dehydrogenase activity was depressed. Meanwhile, the soil microbial community was slightly influenced when soil Cd content is less than 24.6 mg·kg−1 under five ornamental plants remediation. Metal smelting have brought severe metal(loid)s contamination to the soil. Spatial distribution and pollution source analysis for soil metal(loid)s in an abandoned lead/zinc smelter were studied. The results showed that soil was contaminated heavily with metal(loid)s. The mean of lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and antimony (Sb) content in topsoil is 9.7, 8.2, 5.0, 2.3, and 1.2 times higher than the risk screening value for soil contamination of development land of China (GB36600-2018), respectively. Cd is mainly enriched in the 0–6 m depth of site soil while As and Pb mainly deposited in the 0–4 m layer. The spatial distribution of soil metal(loid)s is significantly correlated with the pollution source in the different functional areas of smelter. As, Hg, Sb, Pb and copper (Cu) were mainly distributed in pyrometallurgical area, while Cd, thallium (Tl) and zinc (Zn) was mainly existed in both hydrometallurgical area and raw material storage area. Soil metal(loid)s pollution sources in the abandoned smelter are mainly contributed to the anthropogenic sources, accounting for 84.5%. Specifically, Pb, Tl, As, Hg, Sb and Cu mainly from atmospheric deposition (55.9%), Cd and Zn mainly from surface runoff (28.6%), While nickel (Ni) mainly comes from parent material (15.5%). The metals contamination in surface soils and their accumulation in wild plants from the abandoned Burra and Kapunda copper mines located in South Australia were assessed, and the predominant bacterial diversity in the contaminated surface soils from these two abandoned copper mine sites were evaluated through polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis. The results showed the average concentration of Cu in soils was 3821.59mg/kg while wild plants accumulated up to 173.44mg/kg. The concentration of Cu in shoots of spear grass (Stipa uitida) and berry saltbush (Afriplex semibaccata) was higher than that of roots. The concentration of total and extractable As, Cd, Cu and Pb in soils slightly correlated with of these elements in the corresponding wild plants. The toxicity of Cu in heavily contaminated soils impacted on the quantities of specific microbial populations and no significant change in the microbial diversity of highly contaminated soils. Mulberry has been widely studied for its capacity to tolerate heavy metals. However, the anatomical and molecular response mechanisms of Cd detoxification and transportation in mulberry have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the anatomical characteristics, Cd and mineral element uptake and transport, and transcriptome profiling of mulberry were studied under Cd stress. The results showed that mulberry possessed strong detoxification and self-protection abilities against Cd stress. The growth and photosynthetic pigment contents of mulberry were only slightly affected when the soil Cd content was less than 37.0 mg/kg, while the Ca and Mg contents in the mulberry roots were clearly (p < 0.05) increased by 37.85%–40.87% and 36.63%–53.06% in 37.0–55.4 mg/kg Cd-contaminated soil. Meanwhile, the relationships between antioxidant enzyme activities, such as peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, and Cd content in plants were positive. Furthermore, the structures of leaf cells, root and stem tissues were largely intact; simultaneously, the increase in osmiophilic particles and the dissolution of starch granules in mulberry leaves significantly responded to Cd stress. Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins (COG) and Gene Ontology (GO) classification analysis indicated that mulberry can enhance the catalytic activity, regulate the transport and metabolism of inorganic ions, and strengthen its antioxidant enzyme activity and defense mechanism to decrease Cd intoxication. Large numbers of differentially expressed genes associated with cell wall biosynthesis, antioxidant enzyme activities, glutathione metabolism, chelation, plant hormone signal transduction, and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway were upregulated under Cd stress. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis indicated that plant hormone signal transduction was significantly (p < 0.05) enriched in roots, stems, and leaves of mulberry, and abscisic acid and ethylene can mediate MAPK signaling pathways to increase plant tolerance to Cd stress. The results suggested that the physiological, cellular and tissue, and transcriptional regulation of mulberry can facilitate its stress adaptation in Cd-contaminated soil. Non-ferrous smelting is a primary cause of serious soil pollution. Contamination and health risks of heavy metals in soils around various types of non-ferrous smelteries in China were assessed using data from peer-reviewed papers published between 2000 and 2019. Development in the relevant environmental policy in China was discussed. The studied non-ferrous smelting sites were mainly located in provinces that produced non-ferrous metals on a large scale. The average concentrations of the heavy metals in soils around the non-ferrous smelteries (in mg per kg of soil) were as follows: Cd, 19.8; Cu, 265; Pb, 1536; and Zn, 1371; the concentrations greatly exceeded their corresponding background values. The smelting sites with high soil contamination in terms of metal concentrations, geo-accumulation (I geo), and pollution index (PI) were mainly distributed in several provinces of China, including Guangxi, Gansu, Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Liaoning. Soils near smelteries that processed copper were the most polluted based on I geo and PI. The accumulation of Cd and Pb in soils around non-ferrous smelteries would pose potentially high risks to residents. A series of environmental policies have proven successful in lowering the emissions of contaminants from the non-ferrous in China. Mining activities can result in serious contamination of soil by heavy metal(loid)s. In this study, the sources and spatial distribution of metal(loid)s, and the risks to public health from these metal(loid)s at an abandoned arsenic mine site were explored. The mean concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), strontium (Sr), and thallium (Tl) in the soil in the mining area were higher than the mean background values. The main pollutants from the mining activities were As, Hg, and Sb. Five pollutant sources were identified using an approach that combined statistical methods, a positive matrix factorization model, and historical information analysis. As, Hg, Sb, and Tl were associated with the mining resources and related activities (37.29%); Mn (15.57%) and Sr (15.96%) were mainly from crustal origin and pedogenesis, respectively; Pb, Sb, and Tl were mainly from industrial sources (17.57%), and Cd was mainly from the production and application of phosphorous fertilizer (13.60%). Using incremental spatial autocorrelation crystallized that As, Hg, and Sb were mainly contained within 500 m of their source. There were formed existing non-carcinogenic hazards and carcinogenic risks from As, and potential carcinogenic risks from Cd, in the soil for those living locally. Estimation of critical load (CL) is important for soil environmental management and pollution prevention. We developed a mass balance-based dynamic critical load (DCL) model, which improved the model performance, applicability and functionality compared with the traditional one. Paddy soils in two typical fields in central south China and two scenarios were chosen as case studies. The result of case study showed that atmospheric deposition was the main source of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the soils, with percentage contributions ranging from 59.9 to 79.8%. Crop uptake, particularly the rice straw harvest, was the primary output pathway, accounting for 35.1–71.2% of the total output flux. The critical loads also known as annual input limits (I max) of heavy metals in the paddy soils were calculated by the developed DCL model. For example, the Imax of Cd was recommended as 0.05 kg ha−1 in the paddy soils under the default scenario for a protection period of 40 years, and that became 0.12 kg ha−1 and 0.17 kg ha−1 under the straw removal scenario in the two typical fields, respectively. The scenario simulation suggested that the straw removal strategy reduced the total concentrations of heavy metals (C t) in the soils and notably increased the I max. Meanwhile, the sensitivity analysis indicated that the changes of C t and I max can be controlled by adjusting the partition coefficient (K d), plant uptake factor (PUF) and input flux. The mass balance-based DCL model provides a reference method to establish the standard for controlling heavy metal inputs to agricultural soil, this will be helpful to develop strategies for the prevention of soil contamination. Nowadays, it is extremely important to reuse the harvested biomass from contaminated soils. In this study, the effect of inorganic potassium compounds, such as K 2 SO 4 , KCl, KOH, and K 2 CO 3 , on the hydrothermal carbonization of heavy metal-contaminated rice straw as well as the distribution of heavy metals in the corresponding hydrochars were examined. In the presence of K 2 SO 4 , the higher heating value, carbon recovery, and energy recovery of the resulting hydrochar significantly increased from 23.34 MJ kg−1, 42.74%, and 42.99% to 24.46 MJ kg−1, 44.20%, and 45.03%, respectively. Concomitantly, the enhanced decarboxylation and dehydration process led to a decrease in the oxygen content of the resulting hydrochar. In the presence of KOH, the Cd and Cu content of the corresponding hydrochar significantly increased (p < 0.05) from 70.72% to 79.09%–89.96% and 93.73%, respectively, while only slightly changing upon the addition of K 2 SO 4 or KCl, which was attributed to the morphology and microstructure of the different hydrochars. Exogenous application of plant-growth promoting substances in combination with chelators is a common way to enhance the phytoextraction of heavy metals. A pot experiment was used to explore the influences of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)/gibberellin (GA 3) alone or together with oxalic acid (OA) on the growth, physiological response, and nutrient contents of hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance, and cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) phytoextraction efficiency. The results showed that a foliar spray of IAA/GA 3 alone or together with OA increased plant growth. The largest shoot biomass with increase by 29.7% was produced by the 50 μmol L−1 IAA combined with 2.5 mmol kg−1 OA (50I+2.5OA) treatment as compared with the control treatment (CK). The presence of IAA and GA 3 enhanced the chlorophyll a , carotenoid, and potassium contents in leaves and decreased the malondialdehyde content. The Cd content in leaf and the translocation factor (TF shoot) value from 50I+2.5OA treatment was increased by 4.29% and 21.4%, and the Pb content in stem and shoot, and the TF shoot of Pb after applying 50 μmol L-1 GA 3 combined with 2.5 mmol kg−1 OA was enhanced by 32.5%, 13.4%, and 57.6%, compared with CK, respectively. The optimal Cd and Pb phytoextraction efficiency occurred from 50I+2.5OA treatment with increase by 82.4% and 79.3% as compared with CK, respectively. Therefore, the results showed that a combined application of 50 μmol L−1 IAA and 2.5 mmol kg−1 OA could effectively enhance S. alfredii Hance phytoremediation of Cd and Pb co-contaminated soil. • IAA and GA 3 improve the photosynthetic pigments and leaf K content. • 50 GA 3 combined with OA was suitable for S. alfredii phytoextraction of Pb. • 50 IAA+2.5 OA treatment produces highest shoot biomass Cd/Pb removal efficiency.
