Abstract Due to anthropogenic activities, heavy metal (HM) pollution in soils has increased, resulting in severe ecological problems and posing a constant threat to human health. Among various remediation methods, bacterial remediation is a relatively clean, efficient, and minimally negative approach. However, bacterial agents face multiple environmental stresses, making them challenging to achieve long-lasting and stable restoration effects. To address this issue, supportive organic substances such as biochar can be added to the soil with bacteria. According to bibliometric studies, integrating biochar and bacteria is extensively researched and widely used for HM-contaminated soil remediation. By integrating biochar and bacteria, heavy metals in the soil can be remediated, and soil conditions can be improved over time. Bacteria can also better promote plant growth or contribute effectively to phytoremediation processes when assisted by biochar. However, the remediation agents integrating biochar and bacteria are still some distance away from large-scale use because of their high cost and possible environmental problems. Therefore, further discussion on the interaction between biochar and bacteria and the integration approach, along with their remediation efficiency and environmental friendliness, is needed to achieve sustainable remediation of HM-contaminated soils by integrating biochar and bacteria. This paper discusses the potential mechanisms of biochar-bacteria-metal interactions, current advancements in biochar-bacteria combinations for HM-contaminated soil treatment, and their application in sustainable remediation, analyzes the interaction between biochar and bacteria and compares the remediation effect of different ways and feedstocks to integrate biochar and bacteria. Finally, future directions of biochar-bacteria combinations are presented, along with evidence and strategies for improving their commercialization and implementation. Graphical Abstract

Environmental pollutants have received considerable attention due to their serious effects on human health. There are physical, chemical, and biological means to remediate pollution; among them, bioremediation has become increasingly popular. The nitrogen-fixing rhizobia are widely distributed in the soil and root ecosystems and can increase legume growth and production by supplying nitrogen, resulting in the reduced need for fertilizer applications. Rhizobia also possess the biochemical and ecological capacity to degrade organic pollutants and are resistant to heavy metals, making them useful for rehabilitating contaminated soils. Moreover, rhizobia stimulate the survival and action of other biodegrading bacteria, thereby lowering the concentration of pollutants. The synergistic action of multiple rhizobial strains enhances both plant growth and the availability of pollutants ranging from heavy metals to persistent organic pollutants. Because phytoremediation has some restrictions, the beneficial interaction between plants and rhizobia provides a promising option for remediation. This review describes recent advances in the exploitation of rhizobia for the rehabilitation of contaminated soil and the biochemical and molecular mechanisms involved, thereby promoting further development of this novel bioremediation strategy into a widely accepted technique. The contamination of soils by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a widespread environmental problem and the remediation of PAHs from these areas has been a major concern. The effectiveness of many in situ bioremediation systems may be constrained by low contaminant bioavailability due to limited aqueous solubility or a large magnitude of sorption. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of methyl-ß-cyclodextrin (MCD) on bioaugmentation by Paracoccus sp. strain HPD-2 of an aged PAH-contaminated soil. When 10% (W/W) MCD amendment was combined with bioaugmentation by the PAH-degrading bacterium Paracoccus sp. strain HPD-2, the percentage degradation of total PAHs was significantly enhanced up to 34.8%. Higher counts of culturable PAH-degrading bacteria and higher soil dehydrogenase and soil polyphenol oxidase activities were observed in 10% (W/W) MCD-assisted bioaugmentation soil. This MCD-assisted bioaugmentation strategy showed significant increases (p < 0.05) in the average well color development (AWCD) obtained by the BIOLOG Eco plate assay, Shannon-Weaver index (H) and Simpson index (k) compared with the controls, implying that this strategy at least partially restored the microbiological functioning of the PAH-contaminated soil. The results suggest that MCD-aided bioaugmentation by Paracoccus sp. strain HPD-2 may be a promising practical bioremediation strategy for aged PAH-contaminated soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in surface soil samples from Zhejiang Province, east China. Concentrations of total PCBs ranged widely from 7.50 to 263 ng kg−1 with a mean value of 45.4 ng kg−1 (dry matter basis). In general, concentrations in soil samples from the southern part of the test area and especially from some sites near hills tended to be higher than those from other sites. The prevailing winds may have been the main factor influencing the spatial distribution of PCBs in soils. Other factors may have included the distribution of residential areas and land use variables. In this paper we also discuss the relationships between OCPs and PCBs in soils and relationships between these and land use variables as revealed by correlation analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A survey was conducted on the accumulation and spatial distribution of PAHs in surface soils under different land use patterns in a valley in the Yangtze Delta region with an area of 10 km2 containing 15 small copper- and zinc-smelting furnaces. Sixty-five topsoil (0–20 cm) samples were collected and 16 PAHs were determined. The average amount of all the 16 PAHs ranged from 0 to 530 μg kg−1 (oven dry basis), with a mean concentration of 33.2 μg kg−1. Benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1, 2, 3, -cd]pyrene were the two main PAHs present at high concentrations, while pyrene and fluorene had very low concentrations. PAH concentrations were higher in uncultivated than in cultivated soils, and areas of woods and shrubbery had the␣lowest soil PAH contents. The average PAH-homologue concentrations ranked as follows: 5-rings >> 3-rings, 4-rings > 6-rings >2-rings. Much higher concentrations of PAHs were found in the southern part of the sampling area, perhaps due to deposition of airborne particles by the southeasterly winds in winter and spring. We conclude that the small smelting furnaces were the dominant source of PAHs that accumulated in the soils and the southeasterly winds led to the spatial distribution of PAHs in the topsoils. Phytoextraction has become one of the most promising remediation techniques for heavy metal (HM) contaminated soils. However, the technique invariably produces large amounts of HM-enriched hyperaccumulators, which need further safe disposal. In this study, two different thermal treatment methods are investigated as potential options for evaporative separation of HMs from the residues. A horizontal tube furnace and a vertical entrained flow tube furnace were used for testing the disposal of grounded hyperaccumulators. The release characteristics of HMs (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) into flue gas and residues were investigated for thermal treatment of the Cd and Zn hyperaccumulators Sedum plumbizincicola and Sedum alfredii. In a horizontal tube furnace, incineration favors the volatilization of Cu and Cd in contrast to pyrolysis. The percentages of HMs in residues after incineration are lower than those after pyrolysis, especially for Cd, Pb, and Zn. However, in an entrained flow tube furnace, Zn content in flue gas increases with increasing temperature, but Cu and Cd contents are fluctuated. The use of the [S,S]-isomer of EDDS to enhance phytoextraction has been proposed for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. Speciation of metals in soil solution in the presence of EDDS and dissolved organic matter (DOM) received, however, almost no attention, whereas metal speciation plays an important role in relation to uptake of metals by plants. We investigated the influence of EDDS on speciation of dissolved metals in batch extraction experiments using fourfield-contaminated soils with pH varying between 4.7 and 7.2. Free metal concentrations were determined with the Donnan membrane technique, and compared with results obtained with the chemical speciation program ECOSAT and the NICA-Donnan model using a multi-component approach. Addition of EODS increased total metal concentrations in our soil extracts by a factor between 1.1 and 32 (AI), 2.1-48 (Cu), 1.1-109 (Fe), 1.1-5.5 (Ni), and 1.3-17 (Zn). In general, Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn had the largest total concentrations in the EDDS-treated extracts, but the contribution of these metals to the sum of total metal concentrations varied significantly between our soils. Free metal concentrations varied between 7.0 and 8.9 (pCd2+, 3.9-9.9 (pCu2+), 6.3-10.2 (pNi2+), and 5.2-7.0 (pZn2+). Addition of EDDS decreased free metal concentrations by a factor between 1.4 and 1.9 (Cd), 3.4-216 (Cu), 1.3-186 (Ni), and 1.3-3.3 (Zn). Model predictions of free metal concentrations were very good, and predicted values were mostly within 1 order of magnitude difference from the measured concentrations. A multicomponent approach had to be used in our model calculations, because competition between Fe and other metals for binding with EDDS was important. This was done by including the solubility of metal oxides in our model calculations. Multicomponent models can be used in chelant-assisted phytoextraction experiments to predict the speciation of dissolved metals and to increase the understanding of metal uptake by plants.
