A study in the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionosphere (LAI) coupling often troubles scientists due to a certain distance between distinct instruments, which monitor geophysical parameters in different spheres. An instrumental system was established in southwest China (Leshan; LESH) for monitoring vibrations and perturbations in LAI (MVP-LAI). A ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver at the YADU station locates ~ 260 km away that continuously receives electromagnetic signals transmitted from the BeiDou navigation System (BDS) geostationary satellites to monitor the total electron content (TEC) at the ionospheric pierce point right over the MVP-LAI system. The employment of YADU TEC benefits in elimination of possible shaking effects happening on multiple instruments at the LESH station and mitigation the troubles due to the discrepancy in observation places. Through a stacking process on the retrieved data for increase of signal to noise ratios, a novel phenomenon of the resonant LAI coupling at a fundamental mode of ~ 3.4 mHz and its multiples persists in ground vibrations, atmospheric pressure and TEC retrieved from the MVP-LAI system and the YADU station. The retrieved data share frequencies during the operational period of 1.5 months that is irrelevant to obvious events in the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionosphere. The devastating Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai underwater volcano erupted at ~04:15 UT on 15 January 2022. We captured the waves that erupted from the volcano propagating in the ionosphere by monitoring total electron content (TEC) perturbations utilizing ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers that receive electromagnetic signals transmitted from the geostationary satellites operated by the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS). Meanwhile, ground barometers detected unusual enhancements of air pressure traveling in the troposphere. A novel phenomenon shows that the waves can individually propagate with a speed of ~335 m/s in the ionosphere, which is faster than its' ~305 m/s in the troposphere. We further examined multiple geophysical data at the particular site of the novel instrumental array. Analytical results show that the pressure enhancements traveling in the troposphere not only downward trigger ground vibrations mainly in the horizontal components without obvious time difference, but also upward, leading the secondary TEC perturbations with a ~12-min delay. Geostationary BeiDou satellites monitor the total electron content (TEC) in the ionosphere over certain locations 24 hr per day without interruption and act as ionosphere‐based seismometers. The system detected perturbations in TEC before both the M6.1 Dali and M7.3 Qinghai earthquakes that occurred during the night of 21–22 May 2021. The TEC perturbations reside mainly over an area within a distance of ∼700 km from the epicenters of the earthquakes. The standing waves revealed the persistence of a subsurface wave source before the occurrences of the earthquakes, which differs from the co‐seismic ionospheric distributions propagating away from the epicenters. The resident waves in TEC and ground vibrations share a frequency of ∼0.004 Hz, which can be attributed to the resonant coupling between the lithosphere and ionosphere. However, predicting an earthquake remains as a huge challenge due to the lack of reliable precursor signals. Something must be happened before a large earthquake. Therefore, we are looking for the reliable geophysical parameters for identifying the precursor that human beings are desired. In this study, the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) from the geostationary satellites of the Beidou global navigation satellite system system recorded an unusual phenomenon of TEC perturbations resides in a particular area that appeared after mid‐May in the post‐sunset hours over China. The unusual phenomenon is significantly different from the morphologies of the traveling ionospheric disturbances and plasma bubbles over Asia in summer. Acoustic-gravity waves are generally considered to be one of the major factors that drive changes of the total electron content in the ionosphere. However, causal mechanisms of couplings between sources in the lithosphere and responses in the atmosphere and the ionosphere are not fully understood, yet. A barometer in the cave of the SBCB station records an unusual phenomenon of larger amplitudes in air pressure changes inside than those at the Xinwu station (outside). Accordingly, the comparison between the recorded data at the SBCB and Xinwu station can drive investigations of potential sources of the unusual phenomenon. Analytical results of phase angle differences reveal that the air pressure outside the cave at the Xinwu station often leads air pressure changes inside at the SBCB station at relatively low frequency bands. In contrast, the larger pressure changes at frequencies > ~ 5 × 10–4 Hz inside the cave at the SBCB station lead smaller changes outside at the Xinwu station. To expose causal mechanisms of the unusual phenomenon, continuous seismic waveforms are further conducted for examination. When the horizontal and vertical ground velocities of ground vibrations yield a difference in the phase angle close to 90°, coherence values between the air pressure changes and ground vibrations become large. This suggests that the pressure-shear vertical ground vibrations can drive air pressure changes. Meanwhile, the results shed light on investigating the existence of acoustic waves near the Earth's surface using a partially confined space underground due to that the assumptions of the waves can propagate upward into the atmosphere driving changes in the ionosphere. Scientists demystify stress changes within tens of days before a mainshock and often utilize its foreshocks as an indicator. Typically, foreshocks are detected near fault zones, which may be due to the distribution of seismometers. This study investigates changes in seismicity far from mainshocks by examining tens of thousands of M≥2 quakes that were monitored by dense seismic arrays for more than 10 years in Taiwan and Japan. The quakes occurred within epicentral distances ranging from 0 to 400 km during a period of 60 d before and after the mainshocks that are utilized to exhibit common behaviors of seismicity in the spatiotemporal domain. The superimposition results show that wide areas exhibit increased seismicity associated with mainshocks occurring more than several times to areas of the fault rupture. The seismicity increase initially concentrates in the fault zones and gradually expands outward to over 50 km away from the epicenters approximately 40 d before the mainshocks. The seismicity increases more rapidly around the fault zones approximately 20 d before the mainshocks. The stressed crust triggers ground vibrations at frequencies varying from ∼5×10-4 to ∼10-3 Hz (i.e., variable frequency) along with earthquake-related stress that migrates from exterior areas to approach the fault zones. The variable frequency is determined by the observation of continuous seismic waveforms through the superimposition processes and is further supported by the resonant frequency model. These results suggest that the variable frequency of ground vibrations is a function of areas with increased seismicity leading to earthquakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Periodic signals replaced noise that was found in continuous seismic data, particularly in the nighttime, from the broadband seismometer at the MVP-LAI (monitoring vibrations and perturbations in the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionosphere) system before the occurrence of the Luxian earthquake on 16 September 2021. A short distance of ~150 km between the MVP-LAI system and the epicenter of the Luxian earthquake suggests the periodic singles as promising seismo-phenomena, due to that the radius of the earthquake preparation zone is ~380 km for an M6 event. Integration of geophysical parameters, including atmospheric pressure, vertical electric field, radon concentration, groundwater level and precipitation, at the MVP-LAI system provides an excellent opportunity for studying the seismo-LAI coupling associated with the Luxian earthquake. Analytical results show that ground vibrations, atmospheric pressure and total electron content varied from ~10−3 to ~10−2 Hz before the Luxian earthquake. The seismo-LAI coupling in the relatively low frequency band (~10−3 Hz) can be referred to as the acoustic-gravity waves triggered by the amplified ground vibrations. In contrast, the seismo-LAI coupling in a relatively high frequency band (~10−2 Hz) would be caused by micro-cracks and/or the high-mode natural frequency that further drives changes of TEC due to the atmospheric resonance. Broadband seismometers, ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and magnetometers that were located within an epicentral distance of approximately 150 km consistently observed the novel anomalous behaviors of the common-mode ground vibrations approximately 5–10 days before the M6.6 Meinong earthquake in Taiwan. The common-mode ground vibrations with amplitudes near 0.1 m at frequencies ranging from 8 × 10−5 to 2 × 10−4 Hz were generated near the region close to the epicenter of the impending earthquake. The common-mode vibrations were consistently observed in seismic and GNSS data associated with five other earthquakes in four distinct areas. The results reveal that the common-mode vibrations could be a typical behavior before earthquakes. The causal mechanism of common-mode vibrations can be attributed to crustal resonance excitations before fault dislocations occur. Potential relationships with other pre-earthquake anomalies suggest that the common-mode vibrations could be ground motion before earthquakes, which was investigated for a significant length of time.
