Humans have substantially altered soil and landscape patterns and properties due to agricultural use, with severe impacts on biodiversity, carbon sequestration and food security. These impacts are difficult to quantify, because we lack data on long-term changes in soils in natural and agricultural settings and available simulation methods are not suitable for reliably predicting future development of soils under projected changes in climate and land management. To help overcome these challenges, we developed the HydroLorica soil–landscape evolution model that simulates soil development by explicitly modeling the spatial water balance as a driver of soil- and landscape-forming processes. We simulated 14 500 years of soil formation under natural conditions for three scenarios of different rainfall inputs. For each scenario we added a 500-year period of intensive agricultural land use, where we introduced tillage erosion and changed vegetation type. Our results show substantial differences between natural soil patterns under different rainfall input. With higher rainfall, soil patterns become more heterogeneous due to increased tree throw and water erosion. Agricultural patterns differ substantially from the natural patterns, with higher variation of soil properties over larger distances and larger correlations with terrain position. In the natural system, rainfall is the dominant factor influencing soil variation, while for agricultural soil patterns landform explains most of the variation simulated. The cultivation of soils thus changed the dominant factors and processes influencing soil formation and thereby also increased predictability of soil patterns. Our study highlights the potential of soil–landscape evolution modeling for simulating past and future developments of soil and landscape patterns. Two principal groups of processes shape mass fluxes from and into a soil: vertical profile development and lateral soil redistribution. Periods having predominantly progressive soil forming processes (soil profile development) alternate with periods having predominantly regressive processes (erosion). As a result, short‐term soil redistribution – years to decades – can differ substantially from long‐term soil redistribution; i.e. centuries to millennia. However, the quantification of these processes is difficult and consequently their rates are poorly understood. To assess the competing roles of erosion and deposition we determined short‐ and long‐term soil redistribution rates in a formerly glaciated area of the Uckermark, northeast Germany. We compared short‐term erosion or accumulation rates using plutonium‐239 and ‐240 (239+240Pu) and long‐term rates using both in situ and meteoric cosmogenic beryllium‐10 (10Be). Three characteristic process domains have been analysed in detail: a flat landscape position having no erosion/deposition, an erosion‐dominated mid‐slope, and a deposition‐dominated lower‐slope site. We show that the short‐term mass erosion and accumulation rates are about one order of magnitude higher than long‐term redistribution rates. Both, in situ and meteoric 10Be provide comparable results. Depth functions, and therefore not only an average value of the topsoil, give the most meaningful rates. The long‐term soil redistribution rates were in the range of −2.1 t ha‐1 yr‐1 (erosion) and +0.26 t ha‐1 yr‐1 (accumulation) whereas the short‐term erosion rates indicated strong erosion of up to 25 t ha‐1 yr‐1 and accumulation of 7.6 t ha‐1 yr‐1. Our multi‐isotope method identifies periods of erosion and deposition, confirming the 'time‐split approach' of distinct different phases (progressive/regressive) in soil evolution. With such an approach, temporally‐changing processes can be disentangled, which allows the identification of both the dimensions of and the increase in soil erosion due to human influence. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. ABSTRACT Soils in pro-glacial areas are often approached from a chronosequence viewpoint. In the chronosequence approach, the objective is to derive rates of soil formation from differences in properties between soils of different age. For this reason, in chronosequence studies, soils are sampled in locations that are assumed geomorphically stable and that have different age. As a result, these studies do not necessarily yield a complete view of soil variability in pro-glacial areas, and may miss important relations between geomorphology and soil development. In this contribution, we present new soil observations from three closely related pro-glacial areas in Switzerland. These observations were intended to get closer to a complete view of soil variability, and to assess impacts from factors other than time on soil development. About 40 soils were visited in each pro-glacial valley in a combined design-convenience sampling scheme and described in the field. Linear modelling was used to assess effects of time and topographic factors on soil properties. The time since glacial retreat turned out to rarely explain more than half of the variation in soil properties, and a linear model combining effects of time and topographic variables explained typically about half of the variation in each pro-glacial valley. Models differed and were not transferable between valleys. Apparently, time and the present-day shape of the landscape combined are insufficient information to accurately predict soil properties. • Soils were sampled in 100 locations in a natural grassland in Kansas, USA. • Soil variation is not well predicted with topographic variables. • Position relative to cliffs is best at explaining soil differences. • Short-range and long-range variation in soils are about equal. • Short-range variation is caused by reasons other than tree cover. Landscape position co-determines soil formation, and hence soil properties are related to landscape position. In many landscapes, the importance of landscape position is large, and thus relations between soil properties and landscape position are strong. This is particularly true for agricultural landscapes, where tillage has smoothed over local variation in soils. It is less true for some forested landscapes, where local impacts of trees on soil formation have increased local variation. This raises the question whether soil-landscape relations are strong in natural grassland, with neither trees nor plowing. We answer this question for hillslopes in a natural grassland in the American Great Plains by quantifying soil-landscape relations and soil spatial autocorrelation based on a dataset of 100 soil observations. We find that soil-landscape relations are weak, even when accounting for topographic features specific for the study site, and that short-range variation in soil properties is about as large as long-range variation. We conclude that non-tree related natural processes disrupt the formation of clear catenas, and hypothesize that these include small burrowing mammals and infilling of parent-material fractures with finer material. • We report on 188 soil samples from 9 chronosequences of deglacierization in the Andes and Alps. • Parent material strongly controls soil properties in the early stage of pedogenesis. • Potential As, Cu, Mo, and Mn soil toxicity is reported in Andean proglacial soils. • Initial differences in soil properties dissipate along 120-year chronosequences. New soils formed after glacier retreat can provide insights into the rates of soil formation in the context of accelerated warming due to climate change. Recently deglacierized terrains (since the Little Ice Age) are subject to weathering and pedogenesis, and freshly exposed sediments are prone to react readily with the environment. This study aims to determine the impact of parent material and time on soil physical and chemical properties of nine proglacial landscapes distributed in the Tropical Andes and Alps. A total of 188 soil samples were collected along chronosequences of deglacierization and from sites that differed in terms of parent material and classified following three parent material groups: (1) Granodiorite-Tonalite (GT), (2) Gneiss-Shales-Schists (GSS), and (3) Mont-Blanc Granite (MBG). We determined physical and chemical soil properties such as contents of clay, silt, sand, organic carbon, bulk density (BD), pH, extractable cation (exCa, exMg, exK), elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence (Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Hg, Pb) and ICP-MS (Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, P, S, Zn), and mineral phase (XRD diffraction analysis). Parent material-controlled particle-size distribution, SOC, pH, available P, exCa, and exMg, whereas time since deglacierization only affected SOC and P, and exMg globally. Most of the significant differences in soil properties between parent material groups occurred within the first 17 years after deglacierization, and then we observed a homogenization between sites. While the higher SOC and P contents observed within the GT Andean sites might be due to the parent material composition leading to faster initial soil formation, we identified potential As, Cu, Mo, and Mn toxicity within those soils. Our study highlights the need to investigate further proglacial soil's buffering capacity and carbon sequestration to globally inform the conservation and management of novel proglacial ecosystems. Climate warming has accelerated the retreat of mountain glaciers worldwide, exposing new areas to weathering, vegetation colonization, and soil formation. In light of probable climate changes such as warming and new extremes, understanding the factors that control soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen build-up is crucial to comprehend proglacial soils and ecosystem formation. To this end, we examine the evolution of SOC, nitrogen (total N and NH 4 +), and phosphorus (available P) along nine 120-year chronosequences of deglacierization distributed between the European Alps and Tropical Andes. Our dataset includes geochemical analyses of 188 soil samples, in situ soil temperature data for the period 2019–2022, and hydrographic variables. Although time controls proglacial soil development at all sites, our study highlights distinct pedogenesis dynamics between proglacial landscapes depending on the micro and macro environmental context. Differences in soil development were strongly driven by growing degree days (GDD), maximum soil temperature, and parent material. Notably, we identified a positive effect of GDD on SOC and N (total N and NH 4 +), while our results indicate a negative effect of maximum soil temperature on SOC and NH 4 +, suggesting that overly high temperatures reduce microbial mineralization and organic matter input to the soil matrix. We reported the presence of higher initial SOC, total N, and NH 4 + in the Andean sites than in the Alps sites, suggesting enhanced soil development at the Andean locations. This comparative study suggests the relative importance of maximum temperature and initial site conditions (e.g., parent materials, glacier biomes) during proglacial pedogenesis. Our findings highlight that soil temperature modulates pedogenesis in a complex way and suggest avoiding simply associating greater soil development with higher soil temperature in proglacial landscapes.
