$\gamma$-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies ($\gamma$-NLS1) constitute an intriguing small population of Active Galactic Nuclei with $\gamma$-ray emission resembling low power flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQ), but with differing physical properties. They are jetted, $\gamma$/radio-loud Seyfert galaxies, with relatively low black hole masses, accreting at exceptionally high, near-Eddington rates. Certain of these sources exhibit highly variable emission states on relatively short time scales, the physical origin of which remains elusive. In this work, varying emission states of two bona-fide NLS1s, 1H 0323+342 and PMN J0948+0022, and one little studied FSRQ/intermediate object, B2 0954+25A, are examined. For each source, we analyzed quasi-simultaneous multiwavelength data for different states of $\gamma$-ray activity and present the results of their broad-band emission modelling, taking into account all available physical constraints to limit the range of the model parameters. Two different scenarios are discussed, in the framework of a one-zone leptonic model, where the high energy emission is due to the inverse Compton scattering of the disc and broad line region (BLR) or torus photons by relativistic electrons within the jet. The transition from low to high state is well described by variations of the jet parameters, leaving the external photon fields unchanged. The parameterisation favours an emission scenario with particle injection on a stationary shock inside the jet. When considering all physical constraints, the disc & BLR scenario is preferred for all three sources. We use the multi-epoch modelling to characterize total jet powers and discuss the intrinsic nature of $\gamma$-NLS1 galaxies and FSRQs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The AGN STORM 2 collaboration targeted the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 for a year-long multiwavelength, coordinated reverberation mapping campaign including HST, Swift, XMM-Newton, NICER, and ground-based observatories. Early observations with NICER and XMM revealed an X-ray state ten times fainter than historical observations, consistent with the presence of a new dust-free, ionized obscurer. The following analysis of NICER spectra attributes variability in the observed X-ray flux to changes in both the column density of the obscurer by at least one order of magnitude ($N_\mathrm{H}$ ranges from $2.85\substack{+0.48\\ -0.33} \times 10^{22}\text{ cm}^{-2}$ to $25.6\substack{+3.0\\ -3.5} \times 10^{22} \text{ cm}^{-2}$) and the intrinsic continuum brightness (the unobscured flux ranges from $10^{-11.8}$ to $10^{-10.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ). While the X-ray flux generally remains in a faint state, there is one large flare during which Mrk 817 returns to its historical mean flux. The obscuring gas is still present at lower column density during the flare but it also becomes highly ionized, increasing its transparency. Correlation between the column density of the X-ray obscurer and the strength of UV broad absorption lines suggests that the X-ray and UV continua are both affected by the same obscuration, consistent with a clumpy disk wind launched from the inner broad line region., 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We assemble a sample of 696 type 1 AGN up to a redshift of $z=2.5$, all of which have an SDSS spectrum containing at least one broad emission line (H $\alpha$, H $\beta$ or Mg II) and an XMM-Newton X-ray spectrum containing at least 250 counts in addition to simultaneous optical/ultraviolet photometry from the XMM Optical Monitor. Our sample includes quasars and narrow-line Seyfert 1s: thus our AGN span a wide range in luminosity, black hole mass and accretion rate. We determine single-epoch black hole mass relations for the three emission lines and find that they provide broadly consistent mass estimates whether the continuum or emission line luminosity is used as the proxy for the broad emission line region radius. We explore variations of the UV/X-ray energy index $\alpha_\mathrm{ox}$ with the UV continuum luminosity and with black hole mass and accretion rate, and make comparisons to the physical quasar spectral energy distribution (SED) model QSOSED. The majority of the AGN in our sample lie in a region of parameter space with $0.02, Comment: 23 pages, 24 figures and 10 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present reverberation mapping measurements for the prominent ultraviolet broad emission lines of the active galactic nucleus Mrk817 using 165 spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ultraviolet observations are accompanied by X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations as part of the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Program 2 (AGN STORM 2). Using the cross-correlation lag analysis method, we find significant correlated variations in the continuum and emission-line light curves. We measure rest-frame delayed responses between the far-ultraviolet continuum at 1180 A and Ly$\alpha$ $\lambda1215$ A ($10.4_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ days), N V $\lambda1240$ A ($15.5_{-4.8}^{+1.0}$days), SiIV + OIV] $\lambda1397$ A ($8.2_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$ days), CIV $\lambda1549$ A ($11.8_{-2.8}^{+3.0}$ days), and HeII $\lambda1640$ A ($9.0_{-1.9}^{+4.5}$ days) using segments of the emission-line profile that are unaffected by absorption and blending, which results in sampling different velocity ranges for each line. However, we find that the emission-line responses to continuum variations are more complex than a simple smoothed, shifted, and scaled version of the continuum light curve. We also measure velocity-resolved lags for the Ly$\alpha$, and CIV emission lines. The lag profile in the blue wing of Ly$\alpha$ is consistent with virial motion, with longer lags dominating at lower velocities, and shorter lags at higher velocities. The CIV lag profile shows the signature of a thick rotating disk, with the shortest lags in the wings, local peaks at $\pm$ 1500 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and a local minimum at line center. The other emission lines are dominated by broad absorption lines and blending with adjacent emission lines. We present a 140ks observation of NGC 4593 with XMM-Newton providing simultaneous and continuous PN X-ray and OM UV (UVW1 2910\AA) lightcurves which sample short-timescale variations better than previous observations. These observations were simultaneous with 22d of Swift X-ray and UV/optical monitoring, reported previously, and 4d of AstroSat X-ray (SXT), far (FUV 1541\AA), and near (NUV 2632\AA) UV allowing lag measurements between them and the highly-sampled XMM. From the XMM we find that UVW1 lags behind the X-rays by 29.5$\pm$1.3ks, $\sim$half the lag previously determined from the Swift monitoring. Re-examination of the \textit{Swift} data reveals a bimodal lag distribution, with evidence for both the long and short lags. However if we detrend the Swift lightcurves by LOWESS filtering with a 5d width, only the shorter lag (23.8$\pm$21.2ks) remains. The NUV observations, compared to PN and SXT, confirm the $\sim$30ks lag found by XMM and, after 4d filtering is applied to remove the long-timescale component, the FUV shows a lag of $\sim$23ks. The resultant new UVW1, FUV, and NUV lag spectrum extends to the X-ray band without requiring additional X-ray to UV lag offset, which if the UV arises from reprocessing of X-rays, implies direct illumination of the reprocessor. By referencing previous Swift and HST lag measurements, we obtain an X-ray to optical lag spectrum which agrees with a model using the KYNreverb disc-reprocessing code, assuming the accepted mass of $7.63\times10^{6}M_{\odot}$ and a spin approaching maximum. We present the first intensive study of the variability of the near-infrared coronal lines in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We use data from a one-year long spectroscopic monitoring campaign with roughly weekly cadence on NGC 5548 to study the variability in both emission line fluxes and profile shapes. We find that in common with many AGN coronal lines, those studied here are both broader than the low-ionisaton forbidden lines and blueshifted relative to them, with a stratification that implies an origin in an outflow interior to the standard narrow line region. We observe for the first time [S VIII] and [Si VI] coronal line profiles that exhibit broad wings in addition to narrow cores, features not seen in either [S IX] or [Si X]. These wings are highly variable, whereas the cores show negligible changes. The differences in both the profile shapes and variability properties of the different line components indicate that there are at least two coronal line regions in AGN. We associate the variable, broad wings with the base of an X-ray heated wind evaporated from the inner edge of the dusty torus. The coronal line cores may be formed at several locations interior to the narrow line region: either along this accelerating, clumpy wind or in the much more compact outflow identified with the obscurer and so emerging on scales similar to the outer accretion disc and broad line region., 20 pages, 16 figures and 6 tables. The nucleus of the active galaxy NGC 5548 was the target of two intensive spectroscopic monitoring campaigns at X-ray, ultraviolet (UV), and optical frequencies in 2013/14. These campaigns detected the presence of a massive obscuration event. In 2016/17, Landt et al. conducted a near-IR spectroscopic monitoring campaign on NGC 5548 and discovered He i 1.08 {\mu}m absorption. Here we decompose this absorption into its components and study its time variability. We attribute the narrow He i absorption lines to the warm absorber and, as for the newly appeared low-ionization warm absorber lines in the UV, their presence is most likely due to a reduction in ionization parameter caused by the obscurer. The observed variability of the narrow He i absorption is consistent with what is expected for the warm absorber. Most importantly, we also detect fast, broad He i absorption, which we attribute to the obscurer. This He i broad absorption, which is indicative of a high-column density gas, is unsaturated and variable on time-scales of a few months. The observed variability of the obscurer is mainly due to changes in ionization, although density changes also play a role. We test the physical cycle model of Dehghanian et al. which proposes that helium recombination can account for how the obscurer influences the physics of the warm absorber gas. While this active galactic nucleus was, in part, selected for its historically unobscured nature, we discovered that the X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, and there are new blueshifted, broad, and narrow UV absorption lines, which suggest that a dust-free, ionized obscurer located at the inner broad-line region partially covers the central source. Despite the obscuration, we measure UV and optical continuum reverberation lags consistent with a centrally illuminated Shakura-Sunyaev thin accretion disk, and measure reverberation lags associated with the optical broad-line region, as expected. However, in the first 55 days of the campaign, when the obscuration was becoming most extreme, we observe a de-coupling of the UV continuum and the UV broad emission-line variability. The correlation recovered in the next 42 days of the campaign, as Mrk 817 entered a less obscured state. The short C iv and Lyα lags suggest that the accretion disk extends beyond the UV broad-line region. © 2021. The American Astronomical Society. Over recent years there has been mounting evidence that accreting supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and stellar mass black holes have similar observational signatures: thermal emission from the accretion disk, X-ray corona, and relativisitic jets. Further, there have been investigations into whether or not AGN have spectral states similar to that of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and what parallels can be drawn between the two using a hardness-intensity diagram (HID). To address whether AGN jets might be related to accretion states as in XRBs, we explore whether populations of radio-AGN classified according to their radio jet morphology (Fanaroff-Riley classes I and II; FR I and II), excitation class (HERG and LERG), and radio jet linear extent (compact to giant) occupy different and distinct regions of the AGN hardness-intensity diagram (total luminosity vs. hardness). We do this by cross correlating 15 catalogs of radio galaxies with the desired characteristics from the literature with XMM Newton and Swift X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) source catalogs. We calculate the luminosity and hardness from the X-ray and UV photometry, place the sources on the AGN hardness-intensity diagram, and search for separation of populations and analogies with the XRB spectral state HID. We find that (a) FR Is and IIs, (b) HERGs and LERGs, (c) FR I-LERGs and FR II-HERGs occupy distinct areas of the HID at a statistically significant level (p-value < 0.05) and no clear evidence for population distinction between the different radio jet linear extents. The separation between FR I-LERG and FR II-HERG populations is the strongest in this work. Our results indicate that radio-loud AGN occupy distinct areas of the HID depending on the morphology and excitation class, showing strong similarities to XRBs., 24 pages with 10 figures. SDSS J2232-0806 (the 'Big Dipper') has been identified as a 'slow-blue nuclear hypervariable': a galaxy with no previously known active nucleus, blue colours and large-amplitude brightness evolution occurring on a timescale of years. Subsequent observations have shown that this source does indeed contain an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Our optical photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaign has recorded one major dimming event (and subsequent rise) over a period of around four years; there is also evidence of previous events consistent with this in archival data recorded over the last twenty years. Here we report an analysis of the eleven optical spectra obtained to date and we assemble a multiwavelength data set including infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray observations. We find that an intrinsic change in the luminosity is the most favoured explanation of the observations, based on a comparison of continuum and line variability and the apparent lagged response of the hot dust. This source, along with several other recently-discovered 'changing-look' objects, demonstrate that AGN can exhibit large-amplitude luminosity changes on timescales much shorter than those predicted by standard thin accretion disc models., 17 pages, 8 figures and 7 tables. We present a multi-frequency study of PKS J1222$+$0413 (4C$+$04.42), currently the highest redshift $\gamma$-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($\gamma$-NLS1). We assemble a broad spectral energy distribution (SED) including previously unpublished datasets: X-ray data obtained with the NuSTAR and Neil Gehrels Swift observatories; near-infrared, optical and UV spectroscopy obtained with VLT X-shooter; and multiband radio data from the Effelsberg telescope. These new observations are supplemented by archival data from the literature. We apply physical models to the broadband SED, parameterising the accretion flow and jet emission to investigate the disc-jet connection. PKS J1222$+$0413 has a much greater black hole mass than most other NLS1s, $M_\mathrm{BH}\approx2\times10^{8}$ M$_\odot$, similar to those found in flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). Therefore this source provides insight into how the jets of $\gamma$-NLS1s relate to those of FSRQs., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures and 6 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have recently initiated the first spectroscopic dust reverberation programme on active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the near-infrared. Spectroscopy enables measurement of dust properties, such as flux, temperature and covering factor, with higher precision than photometry. In particular, it enables measurement of both luminosity-based dust radii and dust response times. Here we report results from a one-year campaign on NGC 5548. The hot dust responds to changes in the irradiating flux with a lag time of ~70 light-days, similar to what was previously found in photometric reverberation campaigns. The mean and rms spectra are similar, implying that the same dust component dominates both the emission and the variations. The dust lag time is consistent with the luminosity-based dust radius only if we assume a wavelength-independent dust emissivity-law, i.e. a blackbody, which is appropriate for grains of large sizes (of a few microns). For such grains the dust temperature is ~1450 K. Therefore, silicate grains have most likely evaporated and carbon is the main chemical component. But the hot dust is not close to its sublimation temperature, contrary to popular belief. This is further supported by our observation of temperature variations largely consistent with a heating/cooling process. Therefore, the inner dust-free region is enlarged and the dusty torus rather a "dusty wall", whose inner radius is expected to be luminosity-invariant. The dust-destruction mechanism that enlarges the dust-free region seems to partly affect also the dusty region. We observe a cyclical decrease in dust mass with implied dust reformation times of ~5-6 months., 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The detection of several radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope hints at the existence of a rare, new class of gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei with low black hole masses. Like flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), their gamma-ray emission is thought to be produced via the external Compton mechanism whereby relativistic jet electrons upscatter a photon field external to the jet, e.g. from the accretion disc, broad line region (BLR) and dusty torus, to higher energies. Here we study the origin of the gamma-ray emission in the lowest-redshift candidate among the currently-known gamma-ray emitting NLS1s, 1H 0323+342, and take a new approach. We observationally constrain the external photon field using quasi-simultaneous near-IR, optical and X-ray spectroscopy. Applying a one-zone leptonic jet model, we simulate the range of jet parameters for which this photon field, when Compton scattered to higher energies, can explain the gamma-ray emission. We find that the site of the gamma-ray emission lies well within the BLR and that the seed photons mainly originate from the accretion disc. The jet power that we determine, $1.0 \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$, is approximately half the accretion disc luminosity. We show that this object is not simply a low-mass FSRQ, its jet is intrinsically less powerful than predicted by scaling a typical FSRQ jet by black hole mass and accretion rate. That gamma-ray emitting NLS1s appear to host underpowered jets may go some way to explaining why so few have been detected to date., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures and 8 tables. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies have been identified by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope as a rare class of gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGN). The lowest-redshift candidate among them is the source 1H 0323+342. Here we present quasi-simultaneous Gemini near-infrared and Keck optical spectroscopy for it, from which we derive a black hole mass based on both the broad Balmer and Paschen emission lines. We supplement these observations with a NuSTAR X-ray spectrum taken about two years earlier, from which we constrain the black hole mass based on the short timescale spectral variability. Our multiwavelength observations suggest a black hole mass of ~2x10^7 solar masses, which agrees well with previous estimates. We build the spectral energy distribution and show that it is dominated by the thermal and reprocessed emission from the accretion disc rather than the non-thermal jet component. A detailed spectral fitting with the energy-conserving accretion disc model of Done et al. constrains the Eddington ratio to L/L_Edd ~ 0.5 for a (non-rotating) Schwarzschild black hole and to L/L_Edd ~ 1 for a Kerr black hole with dimensionless spin of a*=0.8. Higher spin values and so higher Eddington ratios are excluded, since they would strongly overpredict the observed soft X-ray flux., 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS
