Using the data set of The Three Hundred project, i.e. 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized haloes and the regions of radius 15 $h^{-1}$Mpc around them, we study galaxy pairs in high-density environments. By projecting the galaxies' 3D coordinates onto a 2D plane, we apply observational techniques to find galaxy pairs. Based on a previous theoretical study on galaxy groups in the same simulations, we are able to classify the observed pairs into "true" or "false", depending on whether they are gravitationally bound or not. We find that the fraction of true pairs (purity) crucially depends on the specific thresholds used to find the pairs, ranging from around 30 to more than 80 per cent in the most restrictive case. Nevertheless, in these very restrictive cases, we see that the completeness of the sample is low, failing to find a significant number of true pairs. Therefore, we train a machine learning algorithm to help us to identify these true pairs based on the properties of the galaxies that constitute them. With the aid of the machine learning model trained with a set of properties of all the objects, we show that purity and completeness can be boosted significantly using the default observational thresholds. Furthermore, this machine learning model also reveals the properties that are most important when distinguishing true pairs, mainly the size and mass of the galaxies, their spin parameter, gas content and shape of their stellar components., 20 pages, 8 figures. We track the main progenitor of each halo at z = 0 and search for merger situations based on its mass accretion history, defining mergers as very rapid increases in the halo mass. Based upon the evolution of the dynamical state of the cluster we define a pre-and post-merger phase. We create a list of all these events and statistically study their mass ratio and time-scales, with the former verifying that all instances are in fact major mergers. By comparing to a control sample of clusters without mergers, we study the effect mergers have on the stellar component of the BCG. Analysing the mass, age, and metallicity of the BCG stellar particles, we find that the stellar content of BCGs grows significantly during mergers and, even though the main growth mechanism is the accretion of older stars, there is even a burst in star formation induced by the merger. In our simulations, BCGs in mergers form in median around 70 per cent more stars than those normally growing, although this depends on the radius considered for defining the BCG. Regarding observable properties, we see an increase in SDSS-u luminosity of 20 per cent during mergers, accompanied by a slightly slower increase of the galaxy g-r colour as compared to the control sample

Using the ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dark matter simUlationS) framework, we explore the impact of environmental density and radiative feedback on the assembly of galaxies and their host halos during the Epoch of Reionization. The ASTRAEUS framework allows us to study the evolution of galaxies with masses ($\rm 10^{8.2}M_\odot < M_{\rm h} < 10^{13}M_\odot$) in wide variety of environment ($-0.5 < {\rm log}(1+δ) < 1.3$ averaged over $(2~{\rm cMpc})^3$). We find that : (i) there exists a mass- and redshift- dependent "characteristic" environment (${\rm log} (1+δ_a(M_{\rm h}, z)) = 0.021\times (M_{\rm h}/M_\odot)^{0.16} + 0.07 z -1.12$, up to $z\sim 10$) at which galaxies are most efficient at accreting dark matter, e.g at a rate of $0.2\%$ of their mass every Myr at $z=5$; (ii) the number of minor and major mergers and their contributions to the dark matter assembly increases with halo mass at all redshifts and is mostly independent of the environment; (iii) at $z=5$ minor mergers contribute slightly more (by up to $\sim 10\%$) to the dark matter assembly while for the stellar assembly, major mergers dominate the contribution from minor mergers for $M_{\rm h}\lesssim 10^{11.5}M_\odot$ galaxies; (iv) radiative feedback quenches star formation more in low-mass galaxies ($M_{\rm h} \lesssim 10^{9.5}M_\odot$) in over-dense environments (${\rm log}(1+δ) > 0.5$); dominated by their major branch, this yields star formation histories biased towards older ages with a slower redshift evolution., 17 pages, 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome !

We start by creating an H i catalogue at z = 1.321 based on the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution (SAGE) model applied to the UNIT simulations. With this catalogue, we investigate the relation between model H i and the dark matter haloes and we also study the abundance of H i, Omega rm{H small {rm I}}, predicted by this model. We then create synthetic H i IM with a nearest-grid-point approach. In order to simulate the telescope beam effect, a Gaussian smoothing is applied on the plane perpendicular to the line of sight. The effect of foreground removal methods is simulated by exponentially damping the largest wavelength Fourier modes on the radial direction. We study the anisotropic 2-point correlation function (2PCF) ζ(rpdbl, rpdbl) and how it is affected by the aforementioned observational effects. In order to better isolate the BAO signal, we study several 2PCF μ-wedges (with a restricted range of orientations μ) tailored to address the systematics effects and we compare them with different definitions of radial 2PCFs. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of an SKA-like survey, finding a clear BAO signal in most of the estimators here proposed

Next generation telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (NGRST) will enable us to study the first billion years of our Universe in unprecedented detail. In this work we use the ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework, that couples galaxy formation and reionization (for a wide range of reionization feedback models), to estimate the cosmic variance expected in the UV Luminosity Function (UV LF) and the Stellar Mass Function (SMF) in JWST surveys. We find that different reionization scenarios play a minor role in the cosmic variance. Most of the cosmic variance is completely driven by the underlying density field and increases above $100\%$ for ${\rm M}_{\rm UV} \sim -17.5 (-20)$ at $z =12 (6)$ for the JADES-deep survey (the deep JWST Advanced Extragalactic Survey with an area of 46 arcmin$^2$); the cosmic variance decreases with an increasing survey area roughly independently of redshift. We find that the faint-end (${\rm M}_{\rm UV} > -17$) slope of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) UV LF becomes increasingly shallower with increasing reionization feedback and show how JWST observations will be able to distinguish between different models of reionization feedback at $z>9$, even accounting for cosmic variance. We also show the environments (in terms of density and ionization fields)of Lyman Break Galaxies during the EoR, finding that the underlying over-density and ionization fraction scale positively with the UV luminosity. In this work, we use the {\sc astraeus} (seminumerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework which couples galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. Exploring a number of models for reionization feedback and the escape fraction of ionizing radiation from the galactic environment ($f_\mathrm{esc}$), we quantify how the contribution of star-forming galaxies {(with halo masses $M_h>10^{8.2}$M$_\odot$)} to reionization depends on the radiative feedback model, $f_\mathrm{esc}$, and the environmental over-density. Our key findings are: (i) for constant $f_\mathrm{esc}$ models, intermediate-mass galaxies (with halo masses of $M_h\simeq10^{9-11}$M$_\odot$ and absolute UV magnitudes of $M_{UV} \sim -15$ to $-20$) in intermediate-density regions drive reionization; (ii) scenarios where $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increases with decreasing halo mass shift the galaxy population driving reionization to lower-mass galaxies ($M_h\lesssim10^{9.5}$M$_\odot$) with lower luminosities ($M_{UV} \gtrsim-16$) and over-densities; (iii) reionization imprints its topology on the ionizing emissivity of low-mass galaxies ($M_h\lesssim10^{9}$M$_\odot$) through radiative feedback. Low-mass galaxies experience a stronger suppression of star formation by radiative feedback and show lower ionizing emissivities in over-dense regions; (iv) a change in $f_\mathrm{esc}$ with galaxy properties has the largest impact on the sources of reionization and their detectability, with the radiative feedback strength and environmental over-density playing a sub-dominant role; (v) JWST-surveys (with a limiting magnitude of $M_{UV} = -16$) will be able to detect the galaxies providing $\sim 60-70\%$ ($\sim 10\%$) of reionization photons at $z=7$ for constant $f_\mathrm{esc}$ models (scenarios where $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increases with decreasing halo mass)., 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy clusters grow by accreting galaxies as individual objects, or as members of a galaxy group. These groups can strongly impact galaxy evolution, stripping the gas from galaxies, and enhancing the rate of galaxy mergers. However, it is not clear how the dynamics and structure of groups are affected when they interact with a large cluster, or whether all group members necessarily experience the same evolutionary processes. Using data from TheThreeHundred project, a suite of 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of large galaxy clusters, we study the properties of 1340 groups passing through a cluster. We find that half of group galaxies become gravitationally unbound from the group by the first pericentre, typically just 0.5-1 Gyr after cluster entry. Most groups quickly mix with the cluster satellite population; only 8% of infalling group haloes later leave the cluster, although for nearly half of these, all of their galaxies have become unbound, tidally disrupted or merged into the central by this stage. The position of galaxies in group-centric phase space is also important -- only galaxies near the centre of a group ($r\lesssim0.7R_{200}$) remain bound once a group is inside a cluster, and slow-moving galaxies in the group centre are likely to be tidally disrupted, or merge with another galaxy. This work will help future observational studies to constrain the environmental histories of group galaxies. The latter might have left imprints visible in present-day observations. Several numerical simulation-based studies show correlations between the reionization time and overdensities and object masses today. To remove the mass from the study, as it may not be the sole important parameter, this paper focuses solely on the properties of paired haloes within the same mass range as the Milky Way. For this purpose, it uses CoDaII, a fully coupled radiation hydrodynamics reionization simulation of the local Universe. This simulation holds a halo pair representing the Local Group, in addition to other pairs, sharing similar mass, mass ratio, distance separation, and isolation criteria but in other environments, alongside isolated haloes within the same mass range. Investigations of the paired halo reionization histories reveal a wide diversity although always inside-out, given our reionization model. Within this model, haloes in a close pair tend to be reionized at the same time but being in a pair does not bring to an earlier time their mean reionization. The only significant trend is found between the total energy at z = 0 of the pairs and their mean reionization time: Pairs with the smallest total energy (bound) are reionized up to 50 Myr earlier than others (unbound). Above all, this study reveals the variety of reionization histories undergone by halo pairs similar to the Local Group, that of the Local Group being far from an average one. In our model, its reionization time is ∼625 Myr against 660 ± 4 Myr (z ∼ 8.25 against 7.87 ± 0.02) on average

The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect is a powerful tool in modern cosmology. With future observations promising ever improving SZ measurements, the relativistic corrections to the SZ signals from galaxy groups and clusters are increasingly relevant. As such, it is important to understand the differences between three temperature measures: (a) the average relativistic SZ (rSZ) temperature, (b) the mass-weighted temperature relevant for the thermal SZ (tSZ) effect, and (c) the X-ray spectroscopic temperature. In this work, we compare these cluster temperatures, as predicted by the {\sc Bahamas} \& {\sc Macsis}, {\sc Illustris-TNG}, {\sc Magneticum}, and {\sc The Three Hundred Project} simulations. Despite the wide range of simulation parameters, we find the SZ temperatures are consistent across the simulations. We estimate a $\simeq 10\%$ level correction from rSZ to clusters with $Y\simeq10^{-4}$~Mpc$^{-2}$. Our analysis confirms a systematic offset between the three temperature measures; with the rSZ temperature $\simeq 20\%$ larger than the other measures, and diverging further at higher redshifts. We demonstrate that these measures depart from simple self-similar evolution and explore how they vary with the defined radius of haloes. We investigate how different feedback prescriptions and resolution affect the observed temperatures, and discover the SZ temperatures are rather insensitive to these details. The agreement between simulations indicates an exciting avenue for observational and theoretical exploration, determining the extent of relativistic SZ corrections. The star formation history (SFH) of galaxies is critical for understanding galaxy evolution. Hydrodynamical simulations enable us to precisely reconstruct the SFH of galaxies and establish a link to the underlying physical processes. In this work, we present a model to describe individual galaxies' SFHs from three simulations: TheThreeHundred, Illustris-1 and TNG100-1. This model divides the galaxy SFH into two distinct components: the "main sequence" and the "variation". The "main sequence" part is generated by tracing the history of the $SFR-M_*$ main sequence of galaxies across time. The "variation" part consists of the scatter around the main sequence, which is reproduced by fractional Brownian motions. We find that: 1) The evolution of the main sequence varies between simulations; 2) fractional Brownian motions can reproduce many features of SFHs, however, discrepancies still exist; 3) The variations and mass-loss rate are crucial for reconstructing the SFHs of the simulations. This model provides a fair description of the SFHs in simulations. On the other hand, by correlating the fractional Brownian motion model to simulation data, we provide a 'standard' against which to compare simulations., 22 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables

The Three Hundred consists of zoom re-simulations of 324 clusters with M 200 ≳ 1014.8, M ⊙ drawn from the MultiDark-Planck N-body simulation, run using several hydrodynamic and semi-analytical codes. The gizmo-simba suite adds a state-of-the-art galaxy formation model based on the highly successful Simba simulation, mildly re-calibrated to match z = 0 cluster stellar properties. Comparing to The Three Hundred zooms run with gadget-x, we find intrinsic differences in the evolution of the stellar and gas mass fractions, BCG ages, and galaxy colour-magnitude diagrams, with gizmo-simba generally providing a good match to available data at z ≈ 0. gizmo-simba's unique black hole growth and feedback model yields agreement with the observed BH scaling relations at the intermediate-mass range and predicts a slightly different slope at high masses where few observations currently lie. Gizmo-Simba provides a new and novel platform to elucidate the co-evolution of galaxies, gas, and black holes within the densest cosmic environments

Associations of dwarf galaxies are loose systems composed exclusively of dwarf galaxies. These systems were identified in the Local Volume for the first time more than 30 yr ago. We study these systems in the cosmological framework of the λ cold dark matter (λCDM) model.We consider the Small MultiDark Planck simulation and populate its dark matter haloes by applying the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation SAG. We identify galaxy systems using a friends-of-friends algorithm with a linking length equal to b = 0.4Mpc h-1to reproduce the size of dwarf galaxy associations detected in the Local Volume. Our samples of dwarf systems are built up removing those systems that have one or more galaxies with stellar mass larger than a maximum thresholdMmax.We analyse three different samples defined by log10(Mmax[M⊙ h-1]) = 8.5, 9.0, and 9.5. On average, our systems have typical sizes of ∼ 0.2Mpc h-1, velocity dispersion of ∼ 30km s-1, and estimated total mass of ∼ 1011M⊙ h-1. Such large typical sizes suggest that individual members of a given dwarf association reside in different dark matter haloes and are generally not substructures of any other halo. Indeed, in more than 90 per cent of our dwarf systems their individual members inhabit different dark matter haloes, while only in the remaining 10 per cent members do reside in the same halo. Our results indicate that the λCDM model can naturally reproduce the existence and properties of dwarf galaxies' associations without much difficulty. Fil: Yaryura, Claudia Yamila. We compare the statistics and morphology of giant arcs in galaxy clusters using N-body and non-radiative SPH simulations within the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model and simulations where dark matter (DM) has a non-negligible probability of interaction (parametrized by its cross-section), i.e self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). We use a ray-tracing technique to produce a statistically large number of arcs around six simulated galaxy clusters at different redshifts. Since DM is more likely to interact in colliding clusters than in relaxed clusters, and this probability of interaction is largest in denser regions, we focus our analysis on radial arcs (which trace the lensing potential in the central region better than tangential arcs) in galaxy clusters that underwent (or are undergoing) a major merger. We find that SIDM produces fewer radial arcs than standard CDM but they are on average more magnified. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to observe galaxies at $z>10$ that are presently inaccessible. Here, we use a self-consistent empirical model, the UniverseMachine, to generate mock galaxy catalogues and lightcones over the redshift range $z=0-15$. These data include realistic galaxy properties (stellar masses, star formation rates, and UV luminosities), galaxy-halo relationships, and galaxy-galaxy clustering. Mock observables are also provided for different model parameters spanning observational uncertainties at $z10^7 M_\odot$ and/or $M_{1500}12$ expand dramatically, so efforts to detect $z>12$ galaxies will provide the most valuable constraints on galaxy formation models. The faint-end slopes of the stellar mass/luminosity functions at a given mass/luminosity threshold steepen as redshift increases. This is because observable galaxies are hosted by haloes in the exponentially falling regime of the halo mass function at high redshifts. Hence, these faint-end slopes are robustly predicted to become shallower below current observable limits ($M_\ast < 10^7M_\odot$ or $M_\mathrm{1500}>-17$). For reionization models, extrapolating luminosity functions with a constant faint-end slope from $M_{1500}=-17$ down to $M_{1500}=-12$ gives the most reasonable upper limit for the total UV luminosity and cosmic star formation rate up to $z\sim 12$. We compare to three other empirical models and one semi-analytic model, showing that the range of predicted observables from our approach encompasses predictions from other techniques. Galaxy clusters can play a key role in modern cosmology provided their evolution is properly understood. However, observed clusters give us only a single timeframe of their dynamical state. Therefore, finding present observable data of clusters that are well correlated to their assembly history constitutes an inestimable tool for cosmology. Former studies correlating environmental descriptors of clusters to their formation history are dominated by halo mass - environment relations. This paper presents a mass-free correlation between the present neighbor distribution of cluster-size halos and the latter mass assembly history. From the Big Multidark simulation, we extract two large samples of random halos with masses ranging from Virgo to Coma cluster sizes. Additionally, to find the main environmental culprit for the formation history of the Virgo cluster, we compare the Virgo-size halos to 200 Virgo-like halos extracted from simulations that resemble the local Universe. The number of neighbors at different cluster-centric distances permits discriminating between clusters with different mass accretion histories. Similarly to Virgo-like halos, clusters with numerous neighbors within a distance of about 2 times their virial radius experience a transition at z~1 between an active period of mass accretion, relative to the mean, and a quiet history. On the contrary, clusters with few neighbors share an opposite trend: from passive to active assembly histories. Additionally, clusters with massive companions within about 4 times their virial radius tend to have recent active merging histories. Using the catalogues of galaxy clusters from The Three Hundred project, modelled with both hydrodynamic simulations, (Gadget-X and Gadget-MUSIC), and semi-analytic models (SAMs), we study the scatter and self-similarity of the profiles and distributions of the baryonic components of the clusters: the stellar and gas mass, metallicity, the stellar age, gas temperature, and the (specific) star formation rate. Through comparisons with observational results, we find that the shape and the scatter of the gas density profiles matches well the observed trends including the reduced scatter at large radii which is a signature of self-similarity suggested in previous studies. One of our simulated sets, Gadget-X, reproduces well the shape of the observed temperature profile, while Gadget-MUSIC has a higher and flatter profile in the cluster centre and a lower and steeper profile at large radii. The gas metallicity profiles from both simulation sets, despite following the observed trend, have a relatively lower normalisation. The cumulative stellar density profiles from SAMs are in better agreement with the observed result than both hydrodynamic simulations which show relatively higher profiles. The scatter in these physical profiles, especially in the cluster centre region, shows a dependence on the cluster dynamical state and on the cool-core/non-cool-core dichotomy. The stellar age, metallicity and (s)SFR show very large scatter, which are then presented in 2D maps. We also do not find any clear radial dependence of these properties. The increase in the observed volume in cosmological surveys imposes various challenges on simulation preparations. Firstly, the volume of the simulations required increases proportionally to the observations. However, large-volume simulations are quickly becoming computationally intractable. Secondly, on-going and future large-volume survey are targeting smaller objects, e.g. emission line galaxies, compared to the earlier focus, i.e. luminous red galaxies. They require the simulations to have higher mass resolutions. In this work we present a machine learning (ML) approach to calibrate the halo catalogue of a low-resolution (LR) simulation by training with a paired high-resolution (HR) simulation with the same background white noise, thus we can build the training data by matching HR haloes to LR haloes in a one-to-one fashion. After training, the calibrated LR halo catalogue reproduces the mass-clustering relation for mass down to $2.5\times 10^{11}~h^{-1}M_\odot$ within $5~{\rm per~cent}$ at scales $k200$ particles per halo) from low-resolution catalogues ($>25$ particles per halo) containing corrected halo masses for each object. This allows to bypass the computational burden of a large-volume real high-resolution simulation without much compromise in the mass resolution of the result. Recent determinations of the mean free path of ionising photons (mfp) in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\rm z=6$ are lower than many theoretical predictions. To gain insight into this issue, we investigate the evolution of the mfp in our new massive fully coupled radiation hydrodynamics cosmological simulation of reionization: Cosmic Dawn III (CoDaIII). CoDaIII's scale ($\rm 94^3 \, cMpc^3$) and resolution ($\rm 8192^3$ grid) make it particularly suitable to study the evolution of the IGM during Reionization. The simulation was performed with RAMSES-CUDATON on Summit, and used 131072 processors coupled to 24576 GPUs, making it the largest Reionization simulation, and largest RAMSES simulation ever performed. A superior agreement with global constraints on Reionization is obtained in CoDaIII over CoDaII especially for the evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction and the cosmic photo-ionization rate, thanks to an improved calibration, later end of reionization ($\rm z=5.6$), and higher spatial resolution. Analyzing the mfp, we find that CoDaIII reproduces the most recent observations very well, from $\rm z=6$ to $\rm z=4.6$. We show that the distribution of the mfp in CoDaIII is bimodal, with short (neutral) and long (ionized) mfp modes, respectively, due to the patchiness of reionization and the co-existence of neutral versus ionized regions during Reionization. The neutral mode peaks at sub-kpc to kpc scales of mfp, while the ionized mode peak evolves from $\rm 0.1 Mpc/h$ at $\rm z=7$ to $\sim 10$ Mpc/h at $\rm z=5.2$. Computing the mfp as the average of the ionized mode provides the best match to the recent observational determinations. We extend ASTRAEUS, which already couples a galaxy formation semi-analytical model with a detailed seminumerical reionization scheme, to include a model for black-hole formation, growth, and the production of ionizing radiation from associated active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We calibrate our fiducial AGN model to reproduce the bolometric luminosity function at z ≃ 5, and explore the role of the resulting AGN population in reionizing the Universe. We find that in all the models yielding a reasonable AGN luminosity function, galaxies dominate overwhelmingly the ionizing budget during the Epoch of Reionization, with AGN accounting for 1-10 per cent of the ionizing budget at z = 6 and starting to play a role only below z ≾ 5

As galaxies are accreted they are affected by their local environment before they enter (pre-processing), and traverse the cluster potential. Observations that aim to constrain pre-processing are challenging to interpret because filaments comprise a heterogeneous range of environments including groups of galaxies embedded within them and backsplash galaxies that contain a record of their previous passage through the cluster. This motivates using modern cosmological simulations to dissect the population of galaxies found in filaments that are feeding clusters, to better understand their history, and aid the interpretation of observations. We use zoom-in simulations from The ThreeHundred project to track haloes through time and identify their environment. We establish a benchmark for galaxies in cluster infall regions that supports the reconstruction of the different modes of pre-processing. We find that up to 45 per cent of all galaxies fall into clusters via filaments (closer than 1 h-1Mpc from the filament spine). 12 per cent of these filament galaxies are long-established members of groups and between 30 and 60 per cent of filament galaxies at R200 are backsplash galaxies. This number depends on the cluster's dynamical state and sharply drops with distance. Backsplash galaxies return to clusters after deflecting widely from their entry trajectory, especially in relaxed clusters. They do not have a preferential location with respect to filaments and cannot collapse to form filaments. It is necessary to develop theoretically modelled galaxy catalogues to estimate the expected performance and to optimize the analysis strategy of these surv e ys. We populate two pairs of (1 h -1 Gpc) 3 volume dark matter-only simulations from the UNIT project with galaxies using the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled to the photoionization model GET EMLINES to estimate their H αemission. These catalogues represent a unique suite that includes galaxy formation physics and -thanks to the fixed-pair technique used -an ef fecti ve volume of ∼(5 h -1 Gpc ) 3 , which is several times larger than the Euclid surv e y. We present the performance of these data and create five additional emission-line galaxy (ELG) catalogues by applying a dust-attenuation model as well as adjusting the flux threshold as a function of redshift in order to reproduce Euclid-forecast d N /d z values. As a first application, we study the abundance and clustering of those model H αELGs: For scales greater than ∼5 h -1 Mpc, we find a scale- independent bias with a value of b ∼1 at redshift z ∼0.5, that can increase nearly linearly to b ∼4 at z ∼2, depending on the ELG catalogue. We use a set of about 300 simulated clusters from The Three Hundred Project to calculate their hydrostatic masses and evaluate the associated bias by comparing them with the true cluster mass. Over a redshift range from 0.07 to 1.3, we study the dependence of the hydrostatic bias on redshift, concentration, mass growth, dynamical state, mass, and halo shapes. We find almost no correlation between the bias and any of these parameters. However, there is a clear evidence that the scatter of the mass-bias distribution is larger for low-concentrated objects, high mass growth, and more generically for disturbed systems. Moreover, we carefully study the evolution of the bias of twelve clusters throughout a major-merger event. We find that the hydrostatic-mass bias follows a particular evolution track along the merger process: to an initial significant increase of the bias recorded at the begin of merger, a constant plateaus follows until the end of merge, when there is a dramatic decrease in the bias before the cluster finally become relaxed again. This large variation of the bias is in agreement with the large scatter of the hydrostatic bias for dynamical disturbed clusters. These objects should be avoided in cosmological studies because their exact relaxation phase is difficult to predict, hence their mass bias cannot be trivially accounted for., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. In this work, we combine the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution SAG with the $102$ relaxed simulated galaxy clusters from The Three Hundred project, and we study the link between the quenching of star formation (SF) and the physical processes that galaxies experience through their dynamical history in and around clusters. We classify galaxies in four populations based on their orbital history: recent and ancient infallers, and backsplash and neighbouring galaxies. We find that $\sim 85$ per cent of the current population of quenched galaxies located inside the clusters are ancient infallers with low or null content of hot and cold gas. The fraction of quenched ancient infallers increases strongly between the first and second pericentric passage, due to the removal of hot gas by the action of ram-pressure stripping (RPS). The majority of them quenches after the first pericentric passage, but a non-negligible fraction needs a second passage, specially galaxies with $M_\star \leq 10^{10.5} \, {\rm M_\odot}$. Recent infallers represent $\sim 15$ per cent of the quenched galaxies located inside the cluster and, on average, they contain a high proportion of hot and cold gas; moreover, pre-processing effects are the responsible for quenching the recent infallers prior to infall onto the main cluster progenitor. The $\sim 65$ per cent of quenched galaxies located around clusters are backsplash galaxies, for which the combination of RPS acting during a pre-processing stage and inside the cluster is necessary for the suppression of SF in this population., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures + Supplementary material. Their formation and dynamics have been widely studied both numerically and observationally. Although numerical simulations in the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological framework predict the formation of such stellar components, there seems to be a tension between theoretical and observational results. Simulated bars are typically larger in size and have slower pattern speed than observed ones. We study the formation and evolution of barred galaxies, using two ΛCDM zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations of the CLUES project that follow the evolution of a cosmological Local Group-like volume. We found that our simulated bars, at z = 0, are both shorter and faster rotators than previous ones found in other studies on cosmological simulations alleviating the tension mentioned above. These bars match the short tail-end of the observed bar-length distribution. In agreement with previous numerical works, we find that bars form in those systems where the disc self-gravity is dominant over the dark matter halo, making them unstable against bar formation. Our bars developed in the last 3–4 Gyr until they achieve their current length and strength; as bars grow, their lengths increase while their rotation speeds decrease. Despite this slowdown, at redshift z = 0 their rotation speeds and size match well the observational data

In this paper we study the applicability of a set of supervised machine learning (ML) models specifically trained to infer observed related properties of the baryonic component (stars and gas) from a set of features of dark matter only cluster-size halos. The training set is built from THE THREE HUNDRED project which consists of a series of zoomed hydrodynamical simulations of cluster-size regions extracted from the 1 Gpc volume MultiDark dark-matter only simulation (MDPL2). We use as target variables a set of baryonic properties for the intra cluster gas and stars derived from the hydrodynamical simulations and correlate them with the properties of the dark matter halos from the MDPL2 N-body simulation. The different ML models are trained from this database and subsequently used to infer the same baryonic properties for the whole range of cluster-size halos identified in the MDPL2. We also test the robustness of the predictions of the models against mass resolution of the dark matter halos and conclude that their inferred baryonic properties are rather insensitive to their DM properties which are resolved with almost an order of magnitude smaller number of particles. We conclude that the ML models presented in this paper can be used as an accurate and computationally efficient tool for populating cluster-size halos with observational related baryonic properties in large volume N-body simulations making them more valuable for comparison with full sky galaxy cluster surveys at different wavelengths. Cosmological $N$-body simulations provide numerical predictions of the structure of the Universe against which to compare data from ongoing and future surveys, but the growing volume of the Universe mapped by surveys requires correspondingly lower statistical uncertainties in simulations, usually achieved by increasing simulation sizes at the expense of computational power. It was recently proposed to reduce simulation variance without incurring additional computational costs by adopting fixed-amplitude initial conditions. This method has been demonstrated not to introduce bias in various statistics, including the two-point statistics of galaxy samples typically used for extracting cosmological parameters from galaxy redshift survey data, but requires us to revisit current methods for estimating covariance matrices of clustering statistics for simulations. In this work, we find that it is not trivial to construct covariance matrices analytically for fixed-amplitude simulations, but we demonstrate that EZmock (Effective Zel'dovich approximation mock catalogue), the most efficient method for constructing mock catalogues with accurate two- and three-point statistics, provides reasonable covariance matrix estimates for such simulations. We further examine how the variance suppression obtained by amplitude-fixing depends on three-point clustering, small-scale clustering, and galaxy bias, and propose intuitive explanations for the effects we observe based on the EZmock bias model., 9 pages, 7 figures; in v2 we incorporate minor modifications from peer review and copyediting

In this work, we have implemented a detailed physical model of galaxy chemical enrichment into the ${\it Astraeus}$ (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dark matter simUlationS) framework which couples galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. Simulating galaxies spanning over 2.5 orders of magnitude in halo mass with $M_h \sim 10^{8.9-11.5} M_\odot$ ($M_h \sim 10^{8.9-12.8} M_\odot$) at $z \sim 10 ~ (5)$, we find: (i) smooth-accretion of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium (IGM) plays a key role in diluting the interstellar medium (ISM) metallicity which is effectively restored due to self-enrichment from star formation; (ii) a redshift averaged gas-mass loading factor that depends on the stellar mass as $\eta_g \approx 1.38 ({M_*}/{10^{10} M_\odot})^{-0.43}$; (iii) the mass-metallicity relation is already in place at $z \sim 10$ and shows effectively no redshift evolution down to $z \sim 5$; (iv) for a given stellar mass, the metallicity decreases with an increase in the star formation rate (SFR); (v) the key properties of the gas-phase metallicity (in units of 12+log(O/H), stellar mass, SFR and redshift are linked through a high-redshift fundamental plane of metallicity (HFPZ) for which we provide a functional form; (vi) the mass-metallicity-SFR relations are effectively independent of the reionization radiative feedback model for $M_* \geq 10^{6.5} M_\odot$ galaxies; (vii) while low-mass galaxies ($M_h \leq 10^9 M_\odot$) are the key contributors to the metal budget of the IGM at early times, higher mass halos provide about 50% of the metal budget at lower-redshifts., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We perform a simulation with Galacticus, a semi-analytical galaxy formation model, to predict the number counts of H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emitting galaxies. With a state-of-the-art N-body simulation, UNIT, we first calibrate Galacticus with the current observation of H$\alpha$ luminosity function. The resulting model coupled with a dust attenuation model, can reproduce the current observations, including the H$\alpha$ luminosity function from HiZELS and number density from WISP. We extrapolate the model prediction to higher redshift and the result is found to be consistent with previous investigations. We then use the same galaxy formation model to predict the number counts for [OIII] emitting galaxies. The result provides further validation of our galaxy formation model and dust model. We present number counts of H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emission line galaxies for three different line flux limits: $5\times10^{-17}$erg/s/cm$^{2}$, $1\times10^{-16}$erg/s/cm$^{2}$ (6.5$\sigma$ nominal depth for WFIRST GRS), and $2\times10^{-16}$erg/s/cm$^{2}$ (3.5$\sigma$ depth of Euclid GRS). Recent observational and theoretical studies of the Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies have highlighted their unique star-formation history, stellar metallicity, gas content, and kinematics. We investigate the commonality of these features by comparing constrained LG and field central dwarf halo simulations in the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astrophysical Objects (NIHAO) project. Our simulations, performed with NIHAO-like hydrodynamics which track the evolution of the Milky Way (MW) and M31 along with ~100 dwarfs in the LG, reveal the total gas mass and stellar properties (velocity dispersion, evolution history, etc.) of present-day LG dwarfs to be similar to field systems. However, relative to field galaxies, LG dwarfs have more cold gas in their central parts and more metal-rich gas in the halo stemming from interactions with other dwarfs living in a high-density environment like the LG. Interestingly, the direct impact of massive MW/M31 analogues on the metallicity evolution of LG dwarfs is minimal; LG dwarfs accrete high-metallicity gas mostly from other dwarfs at late times. We have also tested for the impact of metal diffusion on the chemical evolution of LG dwarfs, and found that it does not affect the stellar or gaseous content of LG dwarfs. Our simulations suggest that the stellar components of LG dwarfs offer a unique and unbiased local laboratory for galaxy-formation tests and comparisons, especially against the overall dwarf population in the Universe., 16 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy clusters have a triaxial matter distribution. The weak-lensing signal, an important part in cosmological studies, measures the projected mass of all matter along the line-of-sight, and therefore changes with the orientation of the cluster. Studies suggest that the shape of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the centre of the cluster traces the underlying halo shape, enabling a method to account for projection effects. We use 324 simulated clusters at four redshifts between 0.1 and 0.6 from `The Three Hundred Project' to quantify correlations between the orientation and shape of the BCG and the halo. We find that haloes and their embedded BCGs are aligned, with an average $\sim$20 degree angle between their major axes. The bias in weak lensing cluster mass estimates correlates with the orientation of both the halo and the BCG. Mimicking observations, we compute the projected shape of the BCG, as a measure of the BCG orientation, and find that it is most strongly correlated to the weak-lensing mass for relaxed clusters. We also test a 2-dimensional cluster relaxation proxy measured from BCG mass isocontours. The concentration of stellar mass in the projected BCG core compared to the total stellar mass provides an alternative proxy for the BCG orientation. We find that the concentration does not correlate to the weak-lensing mass bias, but does correlate with the true halo mass. The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a three mega-second Multi-Year Heritage Programme to obtain X-ray observations of a minimally-biased, signal-to-noise limited sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The programme, described in detail in this paper, aims to study the ultimate products of structure formation in time and mass. It is composed of a census of the most recent objects to have formed (Tier-1: 0.05 < z < 0.2; 2 x 10e14 M_sun < M_500 < 9 x 10e14 M_sun), together with a sample of the highest-mass objects in the Universe (Tier-2: z < 0.6; M_500 > 7.25 x 10e14 M_sun). The programme will yield an accurate vision of the statistical properties of the underlying population, measure how the gas properties are shaped by collapse into the dark matter halo, uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating, and resolve the major uncertainties in mass determination that limit the use of clusters for cosmological parameter estimation. We will acquire X-ray exposures of uniform depth, designed to obtain individual mass measurements accurate to 15-20% under the hydrostatic assumption. The knowledge of the dynamical state of galaxy clusters allows to alleviate systematics when observational data from these objects are applied in cosmological studies. Evidence of correlation between the state and the morphology of the clusters is well studied. The morphology can be inferred by images of the surface brightness in the X-ray band and of the thermal component of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in the millimetre range. For this purpose, we apply, for the first time, the Zernike polynomial decomposition, a common analytic approach mostly used in adaptive optics to recover aberrated radiation wavefronts at the telescopes pupil plane. With this novel way we expect to correctly infer the morphology of clusters and so possibly, their dynamical state. To verify the reliability of this new approach we use more than 300 synthetic clusters selected in THE THREE HUNDRED project at different redshifts ranging from 0 up to 1.03. Mock maps of the tSZ, quantified with the Compton parameter, $y$-maps, are modelled with Zernike polynomials inside $R_{500}$, the cluster reference radius. We verify that it is possible to discriminate the morphology of each cluster by estimating the contribution of the different polynomials to the fit of the map. The results of this new method are correlated with those of a previous analysis made on the same catalogue, using two parameters that combine either morphological or dynamical-state probes. We underline that instrumental angular resolution of the maps has an impact mainly when we extend this approach to high-redshift clusters., 16 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables (including appendix A and B). Clusters of galaxies are useful tools to constrain cosmological parameters, only if their masses can be correctly inferred from observations. In particular, X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect observations can be used to derive masses within the framework of the hydrostatic equilibrium. Therefore, it is crucial to have a good control of the possible mass biases that can be introduced when this hypothesis is not valid. In this work, we analyzed a set of 260 synthetic clusters from the MUSIC simulation project, at redshifts $0 \leq z \leq 0.82$. We estimate the hydrostatic mass of the MUSIC clusters from X-ray only (temperature and density) and from X-ray and SZ (density and pressure). Then, we compare them with the true 3D dynamical mass. The biases are of the order of 20%. We find that using the temperature instead of the pressure leads to a smaller bias, although the two values are compatible within 1$\sigma$. Non-thermal contributions to the total pressure support, arising from bulk motion and turbulence of the gas, are also computed and show that they are sufficient to account for this bias. We also present a study of the correlation between the mass bias and the dynamical state of the clusters. A clear correlation is shown between the relaxation state of the clusters and the bias factor. We study the connection between morphology and dynamical state of the simulated galaxy clusters in $z\in[0,1.031]$ from THE THREE HUNDRED Project. We quantify cluster dynamical state using a combination of dynamical indicators from theoretical measures and compare this combined parameter, $\chi$, with the results from morphological classifications. The dynamical state of the cluster sample shows a continuous distribution from dynamically relaxed, more abundant at lower redshift, to hybrid and disturbed. The dynamical state presents a clear dependence on the radius, with internal regions more relaxed than outskirts. The morphology from multi-wavelength mock observation of clusters in X-ray, optical, and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect images, is quantified by $M$ -- a combination of six parameters for X-ray and SZ maps and the offsets between the optical position of the Brightest Central Galaxy (BCG) and the X-ray/SZ centroids. All the morphological parameters are highly correlated with each other, while they show a moderately strong correlation with the dynamical $\chi$ parameter. The X-ray or SZ peaks are less affected by the dynamical state than centroids, which results in reliable tracers of the cluster density peak. The principal source of contamination in the relaxed cluster fraction, inferred from morphological parameters, is due to dynamically hybrid clusters. Compared to individual parameters, which consider only one aspect of cluster property (e.g. only clumping or asymmetry), the combined morphological and dynamical parameters ($M$ and $\chi$) collect more information and provide a single and more accurate estimation of the cluster dynamical state., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Inferring line-of-sight distances from redshifts in and around galaxy clusters is complicated by peculiar velocities, a phenomenon known as the "Fingers of God" (FoG). This presents a significant challenge for finding filaments in large observational data sets as these artificial elongations can be wrongly identified as cosmic web filaments by extraction algorithms. Upcoming targeted wide-field spectroscopic surveys of galaxy clusters and their infall regions such as the WEAVE Wide-Field Cluster Survey motivate our investigation of the impact of FoG on finding filaments connected to clusters. Using zoom-in resimulations of 324 massive galaxy clusters and their outskirts from The ThreeHundred project, we test methods typically applied to large-scale spectroscopic data sets. This paper describes our investigation of whether a statistical compression of the FoG of cluster centres and galaxy groups can lead to correct filament extractions in the cluster outskirts. We find that within 5 R200 (~15 Mpc/h) statistically correcting for FoG elongations of virialized regions does not achieve reliable filament networks compared to reference filament networks based on true positions. This is due to the complex flowing motions of galaxies towards filaments in addition to the cluster infall, which overwhelm the signal of the filaments relative to the volume we probe. While information from spectroscopic redshifts is still important to isolate the cluster regions, and thereby reduce background and foreground interlopers, we expect future spectroscopic surveys of galaxy cluster outskirts to rely on 2D positions of galaxies to extract cosmic filaments., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Dark matter-only simulations are able to produce the cosmic structure of a $\Lambda$CDM universe, at a much lower computational cost than more physically motivated hydrodynamical simulations. However, it is not clear how well smaller substructure is reproduced by dark matter-only simulations. To investigate this, we directly compare the substructure of galaxy clusters and of surrounding galaxy groups in hydrodynamical and dark matter-only simulations. We utilise TheThreeHundred project, a suite of 324 simulations of galaxy clusters that have been simulated with hydrodynamics, and in dark matter-only. We find that dark matter-only simulations underestimate the number density of galaxies in the centres of groups and clusters relative to hydrodynamical simulations, and that this effect is stronger in denser regions. We also look at the phase space of infalling galaxy groups, to show that dark matter-only simulations underpredict the number density of galaxies in the centres of these groups by about a factor of four. This implies that the structure and evolution of infalling groups may be different to that predicted by dark matter-only simulations. At ~16-17Mpc from us, the Virgo cluster is a formidable source of information to study cluster formation and galaxy evolution in rich environments. Several observationally-driven formation scenarios arose within the past decade to explain the properties of galaxies that entered the cluster recently and the nature of the last significant merger that the cluster underwent. Confirming these scenarios requires extremely faithful numerical counterparts of the cluster. This paper presents the first CLONE, Constrained LOcal and Nesting Environment, simulation of the Virgo cluster within a ~15Mpc radius sphere. This cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, with feedback from supernovae and active galactic nuclei, with a ~3x10^7Msun dark matter particle mass and a minimum cell size of 350pc in the zoom region, reproduces Virgo within its large scale environment unlike a random cluster simulation. Overall the distribution of the simulated galaxy population matches the observed one including M87. The simulated cluster formation reveals exquisite agreements with observationally-driven scenarios: within the last Gigayear, about 300 small galaxies (M*>10^7Msun) entered the cluster, most of them within the last 500Myr. The last significant merger event occurred about 2 Gigayears ago: a group with a tenth of the mass of today's cluster entered from the far side as viewed from the Milky Way. This excellent numerical replica of Virgo will permit studying different galaxy type evolution (jellyfish, backsplash, etc.) as well as feedback phenomena in the cluster core via unbiased comparisons between simulated and observed galaxies and hot gas phase profiles to understand this great physics laboratory., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables

We use the \textsc{astraeus} framework, that couples an N-body simulation with a semi-analytic model for galaxy formation and a semi-numerical model for reionization, to quantify the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies in the first billion years. Exploring four models of radiative feedback, we fit the SFH of each galaxy at $z>5$ as $\mathrm{log}(\mathrm{SFR}(z))=-\alpha(1 + z)+\beta$; star formation is deemed stochastic if it deviates from this fit by more than $\Delta_\mathrm{SFR}=0.6\,$dex. Our key findings are: (i) The fraction of stellar mass formed and time spent in the stochastic phase decrease with increasing stellar mass and redshift $z$. While galaxies with stellar masses of $M_\star\sim10^7M_\odot$ at $z\sim5~(10)$ form $\sim70\%~(20\%)$ of their stellar mass in the stochastic phase, this reduces to $ 10^{10}M_\odot$; (ii) the fractional mass assembled and lifetime spent in the stochastic phase do not significantly change with the radiative feedback model used; (iii) at all redshifts, $\alpha$ increases (decreases for the strongest radiative feedback model) with stellar mass for galaxies with $M_\star\lesssim 10^{8.5}M_\odot$ and converges to $\sim0.18$ for more massive galaxies; $\beta$ always increases with stellar mass. Our proposed fits can reliably recover the stellar masses and mass-to-light ratios for galaxies with $M_\star\sim10^{8-10.5}M_\odot$ and $M_{UV}\sim-17~{\rm to}~-23$ at $z\sim 5-9$. We report the non-thermal pressure fraction (Pnt/Ptot) obtained from a three-dimensional triaxial analysis of 16 galaxy clusters in the CLASH sample using gravitational lensing (GL) data primarily from Subaru and HST, X-ray spectroscopic imaging from Chandra, and Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect (SZE) data from Planck and Bolocam. Our results span the approximate radial range 0.015–0.4 R200m (∼35–1000 kpc). At cluster-centric radii smaller than 0.1 R200m the ensemble average Pnt/Ptot is consistent with zero with an upper limit of 9 per cent, indicating that heating from active galactic nuclei and other relevant processes does not produce significant deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium (HSE). The ensemble average Pnt/Ptot increases outside of this radius to approximately 20 per cent at 0.4 R200m, as expected from simulations, due to newly accreted material thermalizing via a series of shocks. Also in agreement with simulations, we find significant cluster-to-cluster variation in Pnt/Ptot and little difference in the ensemble average Pnt/Ptot based on dynamical state. We conclude that on average, even for diverse samples, HSE-derived masses in the very central regions of galaxy clusters require only modest corrections due to non-thermal motions.

Using 324 numerically modelled galaxy clusters as provided by THE THREE HUNDRED project, we study the evolution of the kinematic properties of the stellar component of haloes on first infall. We select objects with M$_{\textrm{star}}>5\times10^{10} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ within $3R_{200}$ of the main cluster halo at $z=0$ and follow their progenitors. We find that although haloes are stripped of their dark matter and gas after entering the main cluster halo, there is practically no change in their stellar kinematics. For the vast majority of our `galaxies' -- defined as the central stellar component found within the haloes that form our sample -- their kinematic properties, as described by the fraction of ordered rotation, and their position in the specific stellar angular momentum$-$stellar mass plane $j_{\rm star}$ -- M$_{\rm star}$, are mostly unchanged by the influence of the central host cluster. However, for a small number of infalling galaxies, stellar mergers and encounters with remnant stellar cores close to the centre of the main cluster, particularly during pericentre passage, are able to spin-up their stellar component by $z=0$., 8 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

Cosmic Dawn ("CoDa") II yields the first statistically-meaningful determination of the relative contribution to reionization by galaxies of different halo mass, from a fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of the epoch of reionization large enough ($\sim$ 100 Mpc) to model global reionization while resolving the formation of all galactic halos above $\sim 10^8 M_\odot$. Cell transmission inside high-mass haloes is bi-modal -- ionized cells are transparent, while neutral cells absorb the photons their stars produce - and the halo escape fraction $f_{esc}$ reflects the balance of star formation rate ("SFR") between these modes. The latter is increasingly prevalent at higher halo mass, driving down $f_{esc}$ (we provide analytical fits to our results), whereas halo escape luminosity, proportional to $f_{esc} \times$SFR, increases with mass. Haloes with dark matter masses within $6.10^{8} M_\odot < M_h < 3.10^{10} M_\odot$ produce $\sim 80$% of the escaping photons at z=7, when the Universe is 50% ionized, making them the main drivers of cosmic reionization. Less massive haloes, though more numerous, have low SFRs and contribute less than 10% of the photon budget then, despite their high $f_{esc}$. We present the Hestia simulation suite: High-resolutions Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area, a set of cosmological simulations of the Local Group. Initial conditions constrained by the observed peculiar velocity of nearby galaxies are employed to accurately simulate the local cosmography. Halo pairs that resemble the Local Group are found in low resolutions constrained, dark matter only simulations, and selected for higher resolution magneto hydrodynamic simulation using the Arepo code. Baryonic physics follows the Auriga model of galaxy formation. The simulations contain a high resolution region of 3-5 Mpc in radius from the Local Group midpoint embedded in the correct cosmographic landscape. Within this region a simulated Local Group consisting of a Milky Way and Andromeda like galaxy forms, whose description is in excellent agreement with observations. The simulated Local Group galaxies resemble the Milky Way and Andromeda in terms of their halo mass, mass ratio, stellar disc mass, morphology separation, relative velocity, rotation curves, bulge-disc morphology, satellite galaxy stellar mass function, satellite radial distribution and in some cases, the presence of a Magellanic cloud like object. Because these simulations properly model the Local Group in their cosmographic context, they provide a testing ground for questions where environment is thought to play an important role., 20 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Protoclusters, which will yield galaxy clusters at lower redshift, can provide valuable information on the formation of galaxy clusters. However, identifying progenitors of galaxy clusters in observations is not an easy task, especially at high redshift. Different priors have been used to estimate the overdense regions that are thought to mark the locations of protoclusters. In this paper, we use mimicked Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies at $z=5.7$ to identify protoclusters in the MultiDark galaxies, which are populated by applying three different semi-analytic models to the 1 $Gpc h^{-1}$ MultiDark Planck2 simulation. To compare with observational results, we extend the criterion 1 (a Ly$\alpha$ luminosity limited sample), to criterion 2 (a match to the observed mean galaxy number density). To further statistically study the finding efficiency of this method, we enlarge the identified protocluster sample (criterion 3) to about 3500 at $z=5.7$ and study their final mass distribution. The number of overdense regions and their selection probability depends on the semi-analytic models and strongly on the three selection criteria (partly by design). The protoclusters identified with criterion 1 are associated with a typical final cluster mass of $2.82\pm0.92 \times 10^{15} M_\odot$ which is in agreement with the prediction (within $\pm 1 \sigma$) of an observed massive protocluster at $z=5.7$. Identifying more protoclusters allows us to investigate the efficiency of this method, which is more suitable for identifying the most massive clusters: completeness ($\mathbb{C}$) drops rapidly with decreasing halo mass. We introduce a new self-consistent model of galaxy evolution and reionization, ASTRAEUS (semi-numerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS), which couples a state-of-the-art N-body simulation with the semi-analytical galaxy evolution DELPHI and the semi-numerical reionization scheme CIFOG. ASTRAEUS includes all the key processes of galaxy formation and evolution (including accretion, mergers, supernova and radiative feedback) and follows the time and spatial evolution of the ionized regions in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Importantly, it explores different radiative feedback models that cover the physically plausible parameter space, ranging from a weak and delayed to a strong and immediate reduction of gas mass available for star formation. From our simulation suite that covers the different radiative feedback prescriptions and ionization topologies, we find that radiative feedback continuously reduces star formation in galaxies with $M_h, 26 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Diffuse radio emission has been found in many galaxy clusters, predominantly in massive systems which are in the state of merging. The radio emission can usually be classified as relic or halo emission, which are believed to be related to merger shocks or volume-filling turbulence, respectively. Recent observations have revealed radio bridges for some pairs of very closeby galaxy clusters. The mechanisms that may allow to explain the high specific density of relativistic electrons, necessary to explain the radio luminosity of these bridge regions, are poorly explored. We analyse the galaxy cluster Abell 1430 with LoTSS data in detail and complement it with recent JVLA L-band observations, XMM-Newton, Chandra, and SDSS data. Moreover, we compare our results to clusters extracted from the "The Three Hundred Project" cosmological simulation. We find that Abell 1430 consists of two components, namely A1430-A and A1430-B. We speculate that the two components undergo an off-axis merger. The more massive component shows diffuse radio emission which can be classified as radio halo showing a low radio power given the mass of the cluster. Most interestingly, there is extended diffuse radio emission, dubbed as the `Pillow', which is apparently related to A1430-B and thus related to low density intracluster or intergalactic medium. To date, a only few examples for emission originating from such regions are known. These discoveries are crucial to constrain possible acceleration mechanisms, which may allow to explain the presence of relativistic electrons in these regions. Our results indicate a spectral index of $\alpha_{144\,\text{MHz}}^{1.5\,\text{GHz}}=-1.4\pm0.5$ for the Pillow. If future observations confirm a slope as flat as the central value of -1.4 or even flatter, this would pose a severe challenge for the electron acceleration scenarios., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We introduce the Lomonosov suite of high-resolution N-body cosmological simulations covering a full box of size 32 $h^{-1}$ Mpc with low-mass resolution particles ($2\times10^7$ $h^{-1}\,M_\odot$) and three zoom-in simulations of overdense, underdense and mean density regions at much higher particle resolution ($4\times10^4$ $h^{-1}\,M_\odot$). The main purpose of this simulation suite is to extend the concentration-mass relation of dark matter halos down to masses below those typically available in large cosmological simulations. The three different density regions available at higher resolution provide a better understanding of the effect of the local environment on halo concentration, known to be potentially important for small simulation boxes and small halo masses. Yet, we find the correction to be small in comparison with the scatter of halo concentrations. We conclude that zoom simulations, despite their limited representativity of the volume of the Universe, can be effectively used for the measurement of halo concentrations at least at the halo masses probed by our simulations. In any case, after a precise characterization of this effect, we develop a robust technique to extrapolate the concentration values found in zoom simulations to larger volumes with greater accuracy. All together, Lomonosov provides a measure of the concentration-mass relation in the halo mass range $10^7-10^{10}$ $h^{-1}\,M_\odot$ with superb halo statistics. This work represents a first important step to measure halo concentrations at intermediate, yet vastly unexplored halo mass scales, down to the smallest ones. Reliable extraction of cosmological information from clustering measurements of galaxy surveys requires estimation of the error covariance matrices of observables. The accuracy of covariance matrices is limited by our ability to generate sufficiently large number of independent mock catalogs that can describe the physics of galaxy clustering across a wide range of scales. Furthermore, galaxy mock catalogs are required to study systematics in galaxy surveys and to test analysis tools. In this investigation, we present a fast and accurate approach for generation of mock catalogs for the upcoming galaxy surveys. Our method relies on low-resolution approximate gravity solvers to simulate the large scale dark matter field, which we then populate with halos according to a flexible nonlinear and stochastic bias model. In particular, we extend the \textsc{patchy} code with an efficient particle mesh algorithm to simulate the dark matter field (the \textsc{FastPM} code), and with a robust MCMC method relying on the \textsc{emcee} code for constraining the parameters of the bias model. Using the halos in the BigMultiDark high-resolution $N$-body simulation as a reference catalog, we demonstrate that our technique can model the bivariate probability distribution function (counts-in-cells), power spectrum, and bispectrum of halos in the reference catalog. Specifically, we show that the new ingredients permit us to reach percentage accuracy in the power spectrum up to $k\sim 0.4\; \,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ (within 5\% up to $k\sim 0.6\; \,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$) with accurate bispectra improving previous results based on Lagrangian perturbation theory., 12 pages, 4 figures, published version

N-body cosmological simulations are an essential tool to understand the observed distribution of galaxies. We use the MultiDark simulation suite, run with the Planck cosmological parameters, to revisit the mass and velocity functions. At redshift z = 0, the simulations cover four orders of magnitude in halo mass from ~1011M¿ with 8783 874 distinct haloes and 532 533 subhaloes. The total volume used is ~515 Gpc3, more than eight times larger than in previous studies. We measure and model the halo mass function, its covariance matrix w.r.t halo mass and the large-scale halo bias.With the formalism of the excursion-set mass function, we explicit the tight interconnection between the covariance matrix, bias and halo mass function. We obtain a very accurate ( < 2 per cent level) model of the distinct halo mass function. We also model the subhalo mass function and its relation to the distinct halo mass function. The set of models obtained provides a complete and precise framework for the description of haloes in the concordance Planck cosmology. Finally, we provide precise analytical fits of the Vmax maximum velocity function up to redshift z < 2.3 to push for the development of halo occupation distribution using Vmax. In this work an ensemble of simulated Local Group analogues is used to constrain the properties of the mass assembly history of the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) galaxies. These objects have been obtained using the constrained simulation technique, which ensures that simulated LGs live within a large scale environment akin to the observed one. Our results are compared against a standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) series of simulations which use the same cosmological parameters. This allows us to single out the effects of the constraints on the results. We find that (a) the median constrained merging histories for M31 and MW live above the standard ones at the 1-$\sigma$ level, (b) the median formation time takes place $\approx$ 0.5 Gyr earlier than unconstrained values, while the latest major merger happens on average 1.5 Gyr earlier and (c) the probability for both LG haloes to have experienced their last major merger in the first half of the history of the Universe is $\approx$ 50% higher for the constrained pairs. These results have been estimated to be significant at the 99% confidence level by means of a Kolmogorov-Simirnov test. These results suggest that the particular environment in which the Milky Way and Andromeda form plays a role in shaping their properties, and favours earlier formation and last major merger time values in agreement with other observational and theoretical considerations., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Accurate and precise measurements of masses of galaxy clusters are key to derive robust constraints on cosmological parameters. Rising evidence from observations, however, confirms that X-ray masses, obtained under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium, might be underestimated, as previously predicted by cosmological simulations. We analyse more than 300 simulated massive clusters, from `The Three Hundred Project', and investigate the connection between mass bias and several diagnostics extracted from synthetic X-ray images of these simulated clusters. We find that the azimuthal scatter measured in 12 sectors of the X-ray flux maps is a statistically significant indication of the presence of an intrinsic (i.e. 3D) clumpy gas distribution. We verify that a robust correction to the hydrostatic mass bias can be inferred when estimates of the gas inhomogeneity from X-ray maps (such as the azimuthal scatter or the gas ellipticity) are combined with the asymptotic external slope of the gas density or pressure profiles, which can be respectively derived from X-ray and millimetric (Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect) observations. We also obtain that mass measurements based on either gas density and temperature or gas density and pressure result in similar distributions of the mass bias. In both cases, we provide corrections that help reduce both the dispersion and skewness of the mass bias distribution. These are effective even when irregular clusters are included leading to interesting implications for the modelling and correction of hydrostatic mass bias in cosmological analyses of current and future X-ray and SZ cluster surveys., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figure, recommended for publication in A&A
