Search

As the Universe expands, the redshift of distant sources changes with time. Here we discuss gravitational lensing phenomena that are consequence of the redshift drift between lensed source, gravitational lens, and observer. When the source is located very close to the drifting caustics, a pair of images could occur (or disappear) because of the cosmological expansion. Furthermore, lensing systems act as signal converters of the redshift drift. The angular position, magnification, distortion, and time delay of already existing multiple images change. We estimate the expected frequency of these phenomena and the prospects to observe them in the era of deep and large surveys. We present our determination of the baryon budget for an X-ray-selected XXL sample of 136 galaxy groups and clusters spanning nearly two orders of magnitude in mass ($M_{500}\sim 10^{13}-10^{15}M_\odot$) and the redshift range $0< z < 1$. Our joint analysis is based on the combination of HSC-SSP weak-lensing mass measurements, XXL X-ray gas mass measurements, and HSC and SDSS multiband photometry. We carry out a Bayesian analysis of multivariate mass-scaling relations of gas mass, galaxy stellar mass, stellar mass of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and soft-band X-ray luminosity, by taking into account the intrinsic covariance between cluster properties, selection effect, weak-lensing mass calibration, and observational error covariance matrix. The mass-dependent slope of the gas mass--total mass ($M_{500}$) relation is found to be $1.29_{-0.10}^{+0.16}$, which is steeper than the self-similar prediction of unity, whereas the slope of the stellar mass--total mass relation is shallower than unity, $0.85_{-0.09}^{+0.12}$. The BCG stellar mass weakly depends on cluster mass with a slope of $0.49_{-0.10}^{+0.11}$. The baryon, gas mass, and stellar mass fractions as a function of $M_{500}$ agree with the results from numerical simulations and previous observations. We successfully constrain the full intrinsic covariance of the baryonic contents. The BCG stellar mass shows the larger intrinsic scatter at a given halo total mass, followed in order by stellar mass and gas mass. We find a significant positive intrinsic correlation coefficient between total (and satellite) stellar mass and BCG stellar mass and no evidence for intrinsic correlation between gas mass and stellar mass. We provide novel constraints on the parameters defining the universal pressure profile (UPP) within clusters of galaxies, and explore their dependencies on cluster mass and redshift, from measurements of Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) Compton y-profiles. We employ both Planck 2015 MILCA and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 4 y-maps over a common ∼2100 deg2 footprint. We combine existing cluster catalogs, based on Kilo Degree Survey, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Surveys observations, for a total of 23,820 clusters, spanning the mass range 1014.0 M ⊙ < M 500 < 1015.1 M ⊙ and the redshift range 0.02 < z < 0.98. We split the clusters into three independent bins in mass and redshift; for each combination, we detect the stacked SZ cluster signal and extract the mean y angular profile. The latter is predicted theoretically by adopting a halo model framework, and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach is employed to estimate the UPP parameters, the hydrostatic mass bias b h, and possible cluster miscentering effects. We constrain [P 0, c 500, α, β] to [5.9, 2.0, 1.8, 4.9] with Planck and to [3.8, 1.3, 1.0, 4.4] with ACT, using the full cluster sample, in agreement with previous findings. We do not find any compelling evidence for residual mass or redshift dependencies, thus expanding the validity of the cluster pressure profile over much larger M 500 and z ranges; this is the first time that the model has been tested on such a large (complete and representative) cluster sample. Finally, we obtain loose constraints on the hydrostatic mass bias in the range 0.2–0.3, again in broad agreement with previous works.

Unbiased and precise mass calibration of galaxy clusters is crucial to fully exploit galaxy clusters as cosmological probes. Stacking of weak lensing signal allows us to measure observable-mass relations down to less massive halos halos without extrapolation. We propose a Bayesian inference method to constrain the intrinsic scatter of the mass proxy in stacked analyses. The scatter of the stacked data is rescaled with respect to the individual scatter based on the number of binned clusters. We apply this method to the galaxy clusters detected with the AMICO (Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects) algorithm in the third data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. The results confirm the optical richness as a low scatter mass proxy. We investigate the strong-lensing cluster Abell 370 (A370) using a wide Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectroscopic mosaic from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). IFU spectroscopy provides significant insight into the structure and mass content of galaxy clusters, yet IFU-based cluster studies focus almost exclusively on the central Einstein-radius region. Covering over 14 arcmin$^2$, the new MUSE mosaic extends significantly beyond the A370 Einstein radius, providing, for the first time, a detailed look at the cluster outskirts. Combining these data with wide-field, multi-band Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging from the BUFFALO project, we analyse the distribution of objects within the cluster and along the line of sight. Identifying 416 cluster galaxies, we use kinematics to trace the radial mass profile of the halo, providing a mass estimate independent from the lens model. We also measure radially-averaged properties of the cluster members, tracking their evolution as a function of infall. Thanks to the high spatial resolution of our data, we identify six cluster members acting as galaxy-galaxy lenses, which constrain localized mass distributions beyond the Einstein radius. Finally, taking advantage of MUSE's 3D capabilities, we detect and analyse multiple spatially extended overdensities outside of the cluster that influence lensing-derived halo mass estimates. We stress that much of this work is only possible thanks to the robust, extended IFU coverage, highlighting its importance even in less optically dense cluster regions. Overall, this work showcases the power of combining HST+MUSE, and serves as the initial step towards a larger and wider program targeting several clusters., 20 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables (including 1 in an appendix). We present the forward cosmological analysis of an $XMM$ selected sample of galaxy clusters out to a redshift of unity. Following our previous 2018 study based on the dn/dz quantity alone, we perform an upgraded cosmological analysis of the same XXL C1 cluster catalogue (178 objects), with a detailed account of the systematic errors. We follow the ASpiX methodology: the distribution of the observed X-ray properties of the cluster population is analysed in a 3D observable space (count rate, hardness ratio, redshift) and modelled as a function of cosmology. Compared to more traditional methods, ASpiX allows the inclusion of clusters down to a few tens of photons. We obtain an improvement by a factor of 2 compared to the previous analysis by letting the normalisation of the M-T relation and the evolution of the L-T relation free. Adding constraints from the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO from various surveys decreases the uncertainties by 23 and 53 % respectively, and 62% when adding both. Switching to the scaling relations from the Subaru analysis, and letting free more parameters, our final constraints are $\sigma_8$ = $0.99^{+0.14}_{-0.23}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.296 $\pm$ 0.034 ($S_8 = 0.98^{+0.11}_{-0.21}$) for the XXL sample alone. Finally, we combine XXL ASpiX, the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO, with 11 free parameters, allowing for the cosmological dependence of the scaling relations in the fit. We find $\sigma_8$ = $0.793^{+0.063}_{-0.12}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.364 $\pm$ 0.015 ($S_8 = 0.872^{+0.068}_{-0.12}$), but still compatible with Planck CMB at 2.2$\sigma$. The results obtained by the ASpiX method are promising; further improvement is expected from the final XXL cosmological analysis involving a cluster sample twice as large. Galaxy clusters are biased tracers of the underlying matter density field. At very large radii beyond about 10 Mpc h−1, the shear profile shows evidence of a second-halo term. This is related to the correlated matter distribution around galaxy clusters and proportional to the so-called halo bias. We present an observational analysis of the halo bias–mass relation based on the AMICO galaxy cluster catalogue, comprising around 7000 candidates detected in the third release of the KiDS survey. We split the cluster sample into 14 redshift-richness bins and derive the halo bias and the virial mass in each bin by means of a stacked weak lensing analysis. The observed halo bias–mass relation and the theoretical predictions based on the Lambda cold dark matter standard cosmological model show an agreement within 2σ. The mean measurements of bias and mass over the full catalogue give $M_{200c} = (4.9 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{13}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }/{\it h}$ and $b_h \sigma _8^2 = 1.2 \pm 0.1$. With the additional prior of a bias–mass relation from numerical simulations, we constrain the normalization of the power spectrum with a fixed matter density Ωm = 0.3, finding σ8 = 0.63 ± 0.10.

Mergers between galaxy clusters often drive shocks into the intra cluster medium (ICM), the effects of which are sometimes visible via temperature and density jumps in the X-ray, and via radio emission from relativistic particles energized by the shock's passage. Abell2108 was selected as a likely merger system through comparing the X-ray luminosity to the Planck Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal, where this cluster appeared highly X-ray underluminous. Follow up observations confirmed it to be a merging low mass cluster featuring two distinct subclusters, both with a highly disturbed X-ray morphology. Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) data covering 120-750MHz show an extended radio feature resembling a radio relic, near the location of a temperature discontinuity in the X-rays. We measure a Mach number from the X-ray temperature jump. Several characteristics of radio relics are found in Abell2108, making this cluster one of the few low mass mergers likely hosting a radio relic. The radio spectrum is exceptionally steep, and the radio power is very weak (P1.4GHz=1E22W/Hz). To account for the shock/relic offset, we propose a scenario in which the shock created the relic by re-accelerating a cloud of pre-existing relativistic electrons and then moved away, leaving behind a fading relic. The electron aging timescale derived from the high-frequency steepening in the relic spectrum is consistent with the shock travel time to the observed X-ray discontinuity. However, the lower flux in GMRT band 4 data causing the steepening could be due to instrumental limitations, and deeper radio data are needed to constrain the spectral slope of the relic at high frequencies., accepted for publication in ApJ; 15 pages, 6 figures

Galaxy clusters exhibit a rich morphology during the early and intermediate stages of mass assembly, especially beyond their boundary. A classification scheme based on shapefinders deduced from the Minkowski functionals is examined to fully account for the morphological diversity of galaxy clusters, including relaxed and merging clusters, clusters fed by filamentary structures, and cluster-pair bridges. These configurations are conveniently treated with idealised geometric models and analytical formulae, some of which are novel. Examples from CLASH and LC$^2$ clusters and observed cluster-pair bridges are discussed., 12 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from simultaneous modeling of high angular resolution GBT/MUSTANG-2 90 GHz Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) measurements and XMM-XXL X-ray images of three rich galaxy clusters selected from the HSC-SSP Survey. The combination of high angular resolution SZE and X-ray imaging enables a spatially resolved multi-component analysis, which is crucial to understand complex distributions of cluster gas properties. The targeted clusters have similar optical richnesses and redshifts, but exhibit different dynamical states in their member galaxy distributions: a single-peaked cluster, a double-peaked cluster, and a cluster belonging to a supercluster. A large-scale residual pattern in both regular Compton-parameter $y$ and X-ray surface brightness distributions is found in the single-peaked cluster, indicating a sloshing mode. The double-peaked cluster shows an X-ray remnant cool core between two SZE peaks associated with galaxy concentrations. The temperatures of the two peaks reach $\sim20-30$ keV in contrast to the cool core component of $\sim2$ keV, indicating a violent merger. The main SZE signal for the supercluster is elongated along a direction perpendicular to the major axis of the X-ray core, suggesting a minor merger before core passage. The $S_X$ and $y$ distributions are thus perturbed at some level, regardless of the optical properties. We find that the integrated Compton $y$ parameter and the temperature for the major merger are boosted from those expected by the weak-lensing mass and those for the other two clusters show no significant deviations, which is consistent with predictions of numerical simulations., Comment: 36 pages, 25 figures, 5 tables; accepted for the publication in MNRAS

The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a three mega-second Multi-Year Heritage Programme to obtain X-ray observations of a minimally-biased, signal-to-noise limited sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The programme, described in detail in this paper, aims to study the ultimate products of structure formation in time and mass. It is composed of a census of the most recent objects to have formed (Tier-1: 0.05 < z < 0.2; 2 x 10e14 M_sun < M_500 < 9 x 10e14 M_sun), together with a sample of the highest-mass objects in the Universe (Tier-2: z < 0.6; M_500 > 7.25 x 10e14 M_sun). The programme will yield an accurate vision of the statistical properties of the underlying population, measure how the gas properties are shaped by collapse into the dark matter halo, uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating, and resolve the major uncertainties in mass determination that limit the use of clusters for cosmological parameter estimation. We will acquire X-ray exposures of uniform depth, designed to obtain individual mass measurements accurate to 15-20% under the hydrostatic assumption. As modern-day precision cosmology aims for statistical uncertainties of the percent level or lower, it becomes increasingly important to reconsider estimator assumptions at each step of the process, and their consequences on the statistical variability of the scientific results. We compare $L^1$ regression statistics to the weighted mean, the canonical $L^2$ method based on Gaussian assumptions, for inference of the weak gravitational shear signal from a catalog of background ellipticity measurements around a sample of clusters, in many recent analyses a standard step in the process. We use the shape measurements of background sources around 6925 AMICO clusters detected in the KiDS 3rd data release. We investigate the robustness of our results and the dependence of uncertainties on the signal-to-noise ratios of the background source detections. Using a halo model approach, we derive lensing masses from the estimated excess surface density profiles. The highly significant shear signal allows us to study the scaling relation between the $r$-band cluster luminosity $L_{200}$, and the derived lensing mass $M_{200}$. We show the results of the scaling relations derived in 13 bins in $L_{200}$, with a tightly constrained power law slope of $\sim 1.24\pm 0.08$. We observe a small, but significant relative bias of a few percent in the recovered excess surface density profiles between the two regression methods, which translates to a $1\sigma$ difference in $M_{200}$. The efficiency of $L^1$ is at least that of the weighted mean, relatively increasing with higher signal-to-noise shape measurements. Our results indicate the relevance of optimizing the estimator for infering the gravitational shear from a distribution of background ellipticities. Context. The large-scale mass distribution around dark matter haloes hosting galaxy clusters provides sensitive cosmological information. Aims. In this work, we make use of a large photometric galaxy cluster sample, constructed from the public Third Data Release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, and the corresponding shear signal, to assess cluster masses and test the concordance ${\Lambda}$-cold dark matter (${\Lambda}$CDM) model. In particular, we study the weak gravitational lensing effects on scales beyond the cluster virial radius, where the signal is dominated by correlated and uncorrelated matter density distributions along the line-of-sight. The analysed catalogue consists of 6962 galaxy clusters, in the redshift range $0.1 \leq z \leq 0.6$ and with signal-to-noise ratio larger than 3.5. Methods. We perform a full Bayesian analysis to model the stacked shear profiles of these clusters. The adopted likelihood function considers both the small-scale 1-halo term, used primarily to constrain the cluster structural properties, and the 2-halo term, that can be used to constrain cosmological parameters. Results. We find that the adopted modelling is successful to assess both the cluster masses and the total matter density parameter, ${\Omega}_M$, when fitting shear profiles up to the largest available scales of 35 Mpc/h. Moreover, our results provide a strong observational evidence of the 2-halo signal in the stacked gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters, further demonstrating the reliability of this probe for cosmological studies. The main result of this work is a robust constraint on ${\Omega}_M$, assuming a flat ${\Lambda}$CDM cosmology. In the hierarchical scenario of structure formation, galaxy clusters are the ultimate virialised products in mass and time. Hot baryons in the intracluster medium (ICM) and cold baryons in galaxies inhabit a dark matter dominated halo. Internal processes, accretion, and mergers can perturb the equilibrium, which is established only at later times. However, the cosmic time when thermalisation is effective is still to be assessed. Here we show that massive clusters in the observed universe attained an advanced thermal equilibrium $\sim~1.8~\text{Gyr}$ ago, at redshift $z =0.14\pm0.06$, when the universe was $11.7\pm0.7~\text{Gyr}$ old. Hot gas is mostly thermalised after the time when cosmic densities of matter and dark energy match. We find in a statistically nearly complete and homogeneous sample of 120 clusters from the {\it Planck} Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (ESZ) sample that the kinetic energy traced by the galaxy velocity dispersion is a faithful probe of the gravitational energy since a look back time of at least $\sim5.4~\text{Gyr}$, whereas the efficiency of hot gas in converting kinetic to thermal energy, as measured through X-ray observations in the core-excised area within $r_{500}$, steadily increases with time. The evolution is detected at the $\sim 98$ per cent probability level. Our results demonstrate that halo mass accretion history plays a larger role for cluster thermal equilibrium than radiative physics. By means of the $r$-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in a sample of about 4000 clusters detected by the cluster finder AMICO in the KiDS-DR3 area of about 400 deg$^2$, we studied the evolution with richness and redshift of the passive evolving (red), star-forming (blue), and total galaxy populations. This analysis was performed for clusters in the redshift range [0.1,0.8] and in the mass range [$10^{13} M_{\odot}$,$10^{15} M_{\odot}$]. To compute LFs, we binned the luminosity distribution in magnitude and statistically subtracted the background. Then, we divided the cluster sample in bins of both redshift and richness/mass. We stacked LF counts in each 2D bin for the total, red, and blue galaxy populations; finally, we fitted the stacked LF with a Schechter function and studied the trend of its parameters with redshift and richness/mass. We found a passive evolution with $z$ for the bright part of the LF for the red and total populations and no significant trends for the faint galaxies. The mass/richness dependence is clear for the density parameter $\Phi_{\star}$, increasing with richness, and for the total population faint end, which is shallower in the rich clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, to published in A&A

Large samples of galaxy clusters provide knowledge of both astrophysics in the most massive virialised environments and the properties of the cosmological model that defines our Universe. However, an important issue that affects the interpretation of galaxy cluster samples is the role played by the selection waveband and the potential for this to introduce a bias in the physical properties of clusters thus selected. We aim to investigate waveband-dependent selection effects in the identification of galaxy clusters by comparing the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) Ultimate Extra-galactic Survey (XXL) and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) CAMIRA cluster samples identified from a common 22.6 deg2 sky area. We compare 150 XXL and 270 CAMIRA clusters in a common parameter space defined by X-ray aperture brightness and optical richness. We find that 71/150 XXL clusters are matched to the location of a CAMIRA cluster, the majority of which (67/71) display richness values N>15 that exceed the CAMIRA catalogue richness threshold. We find that 67/270 CAMIRA clusters are matched to the location of an XXL cluster (defined within XXL as an extended X-ray source). Of the unmatched CAMIRA clusters, the majority display low X-ray fluxes consistent with the lack of an XXL counterpart. However, a significant fraction (64/107) CAMIRA clusters that display high X-ray fluxes are not asociated with an extended source in the XXL catalogue. We report the non-thermal pressure fraction (Pnt/Ptot) obtained from a three-dimensional triaxial analysis of 16 galaxy clusters in the CLASH sample using gravitational lensing (GL) data primarily from Subaru and HST, X-ray spectroscopic imaging from Chandra, and Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect (SZE) data from Planck and Bolocam. Our results span the approximate radial range 0.015–0.4 R200m (∼35–1000 kpc). At cluster-centric radii smaller than 0.1 R200m the ensemble average Pnt/Ptot is consistent with zero with an upper limit of 9 per cent, indicating that heating from active galactic nuclei and other relevant processes does not produce significant deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium (HSE). The ensemble average Pnt/Ptot increases outside of this radius to approximately 20 per cent at 0.4 R200m, as expected from simulations, due to newly accreted material thermalizing via a series of shocks. Also in agreement with simulations, we find significant cluster-to-cluster variation in Pnt/Ptot and little difference in the ensemble average Pnt/Ptot based on dynamical state. We conclude that on average, even for diverse samples, HSE-derived masses in the very central regions of galaxy clusters require only modest corrections due to non-thermal motions.

We present the mass calibration for galaxy clusters detected with the AMICO code in KiDS DR3 data. The cluster sample comprises $\sim$ 7000 objects and covers the redshift range 0.1 < $z$ < 0.6. We perform a weak lensing stacked analysis by binning the clusters according to redshift and two different mass proxies provided by AMICO, namely the amplitude $A$ (measure of galaxy abundance through an optimal filter) and the richness $\lambda^*$ (sum of membership probabilities in a consistent radial and magnitude range across redshift). For each bin, we model the data as a truncated NFW profile plus a 2-halo term, taking into account uncertainties related to concentration and miscentring. From the retrieved estimates of the mean halo masses, we construct the $A$-$M_{200}$ and the $\lambda^*$-$M_{200}$ relations. The relations extend over more than one order of magnitude in mass, down to $M_{200} \sim 2 (5) \times 10^{13} M_\odot/h$ at $z$ = 0.2 (0.5), with small evolution in redshift. The logarithmic slope is $\sim 2.0$ for the $A$-mass relation, and $\sim 1.7$ for the $\lambda^*$-mass relation, consistent with previous estimations on mock catalogues and coherent with the different nature of the two observables., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted by MNRAS

As the end products of the hierarchical process of cosmic structure formation, galaxy clusters present some predictable properties, like those mostly driven by gravity, and some others, more affected by astrophysical dissipative processes, that can be recovered from observations and that show remarkable "universal" behaviour once rescaled by halo mass and redshift. However, a consistent picture that links these universal radial profiles and the integrated values of the thermodynamical quantities of the intracluster medium, also quantifying the deviations from the standard self-similar gravity-driven scenario, has to be demonstrated. In this work, we use a semi-analytic model based on a universal pressure profile in hydrostatic equilibrium within a cold dark matter halo with a defined relation between mass and concentration to reconstruct the scaling laws between the X-ray properties of galaxy clusters. We also quantify any deviation from the self-similar predictions in terms of temperature dependence of a few physical quantities such as the gas mass fraction, the relation between spectroscopic temperature and its global value, and, if present, the hydrostatic mass bias. This model allows to reconstruct both the observed profiles and the scaling laws between integrated quantities. We use the Planck-selected ESZ sample to calibrate the predicted scaling laws between gas mass, temperature, luminosity and total mass. Our universal model reproduces well the observed thermodynamic properties and provides a way to interpret the observed deviations from the standard self-similar behaviour. By combining these results with the constraints on the observed $Y_{SZ}-T$ relation, we show how we can quantify the level of gas clumping affecting the studied sample, estimate the clumping-free gas mass fraction, and suggest the average level of hydrostatic bias present., 13 pages. Steinhardt et al., arXiv:2001.09999v2, The Beyond Ultra-deep Frontier Fields and Legacy Observations (BUFFALO) is a 101 orbit + 101 parallel Cycle 25 Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury program taking data from 2018 to 2020. BUFFALO will expand existing coverage of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) in Wide Field Camera 3/IR F105W, F125W, and F160W and Advanced Camera for Surveys/WFC F606W and F814W around each of the six HFF clusters and flanking fields. This additional area has not been observed by HST but is already covered by deep multiwavelength data sets, including Spitzer and Chandra. As with the original HFF program, BUFFALO is designed to take advantage of gravitational lensing from massive clusters to simultaneously find high-redshift galaxies that would otherwise lie below HST detection limits and model foreground clusters to study the properties of dark matter and galaxy assembly. The expanded area will provide the first opportunity to study both cosmic variance at high redshift and galaxy assembly in the outskirts of the large HFF clusters. Five additional orbits are reserved for transient follow-up. High-mass clusters at low redshifts have been intensively studied at various wavelengths. However, while more distant objects at lower masses constitute the bulk population of future surveys, their physical state remain poorly explored to date. In this paper, we present resolved observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, obtained with the NIKA2 camera, towards the cluster of galaxies XLSSC 102, a relatively low-mass system (M500 ∼ 2 × 1014 M·) at z = 0.97 detected from the XXL survey. We combine NIKA2 SZ data, XMM-Newton X-ray data, and Megacam optical data to explore, respectively, the spatial distribution of the gas electron pressure, the gas density, and the galaxies themselves. We find significant offsets between the X-ray peak, the SZ peak, the brightest cluster galaxy, and the peak of galaxy density. Additionally, the galaxy distribution and the gas present elongated morphologies. This is interpreted as the sign of a recent major merging event, which induced a local boost of the gas pressure towards the north of XLSSC 102 and stripped the gas out of the galaxy group. The NIKA2 data are also combined with XXL data to construct the thermodynamic profiles of XLSSC 102, obtaining relatively tight constraints up to about ∼r500, and revealing properties that are typical of disturbed systems. We also explore the impact of the cluster centre definition and the implication of local pressure substructure on the recovered profiles. Finally, we derive the global properties of XLSSC 102 and compare them to those of high-mass-and-low-redshift systems, finding no strong evidence for non-standard evolution. We also use scaling relations to obtain alternative mass estimates from our profiles. The variation between these different mass estimates reflects the difficulty to accurately measure the mass of low-mass clusters at z ∼ 1, especially with low signal-to-noise ratio data and for a disturbed system. However, it also highlights the strength of resolved SZ observations alone and in combination with survey-like X-ray data. This is promising for the study of high redshift clusters from the combination of eROSITA and high resolution SZ instruments and will complement the new generation of optical surveys from facilities such as LSST and Euclid., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

Total mass is arguably the most fundamental property for cosmological studies with galaxy clusters. We investigate the present differences in the mass estimates obtained through independent X-ray, weak-lensing, and dynamical studies. We quantify the differences as the mean ratio 1-$b$=M$_{\rm HE}$/M$_{\rm WL,dyn}$, where HE refers to hydrostatic masses obtained from X-ray observations, WL refers to the results of weak-lensing measurements, and dyn refers to the mass estimates either from velocity dispersion or from the caustic technique. Recent X-ray masses reported by independent groups show average differences smaller than $\sim$10$\%$, posing a strong limit on the systematics that can be ascribed to the differences in the X-ray analysis when studying the hydrostatic bias. The mean ratio between our X-ray masses and the weak-lensing masses in the LC$^2$-single catalog is 1-$b$=0.74$\pm$0.06. However, the mean mass ratios inferred from the WL masses of different projects vary by a large amount, with APEX-SZ showing a bias consistent with zero (1-$b$=1.02$\pm$0.12), LoCuSS and CCCP/MENeaCS showing a significant difference (1-$b$=0.76$\pm$0.09 and 1-$b$=0.77$\pm$0.10, respectively), and WtG pointing to the largest deviation (1-$b$=0.61$\pm$0.12). At odds with the WL results, the dynamical mass measurements show better agreement with the X-ray hydrostatic masses, although there are significant differences when relaxed or disturbed clusters are used. The different ratios obtained using different mass estimators suggest that there are still systematics that are not accounted for in all the techniques used to recover cluster masses. A catalogue of galaxy clusters was obtained in an area of 414 sq deg up to a redshift $z\sim0.8$ from the Data Release 3 of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-DR3), using the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO) algorithm. The catalogue and the calibration of the richness-mass relation were presented in two companion papers. Here we describe the selection of the cluster central galaxy and the classification of blue and red cluster members, and analyze the main cluster properties, such as the red/blue fraction, cluster mass, brightness and stellar mass of the central galaxy, and their dependence on redshift and cluster richness. We use the Illustris-TNG simulation, which represents the state-of-the-art cosmological simulation of galaxy formation, as a benchmark for the interpretation of the results. A good agreement with simulations is found at low redshifts ($z \le 0.4$), while at higher redshifts the simulations indicate a lower fraction of blue galaxies than what found in the KiDS-AMICO catalogue: we argue that this may be due to an underestimate of star-forming galaxies in the simulations. The selection of clusters with a larger magnitude difference between the two brightest central galaxies, which may indicate a more relaxed cluster dynamical status, improves the agreement between the observed and simulated cluster mass and stellar mass of the central galaxy. We report the scaling relations derived by fitting the X-ray parameters determined from analyzing the XMM-Newton observations of 120 galaxy clusters in the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich sample spanning the redshift range of 0.059$$3$\sigma$) of the $M_{tot}$-$T$ relation, pointing to an increase of the kinetic-to-thermal energy ratio with redshift. Scaling relations trace the formation and evolution of galaxy clusters. We exploited multi-wavelength surveys -- the XXL survey at \emph{XMM-Newton} in the X-ray band, and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program for optical weak lensing -- to study an X-ray selected, complete sample of clusters and groups. The scalings of gas mass, temperature, and soft-band X-ray luminosity with the weak lensing mass show imprints of radiative cooling and AGN feedback in groups. From the multi-variate analysis, we found some evidence for steeper than self-similar slopes for gas mass ($\beta_{m_\text{g}|m}=1.73 \pm0.80$) and luminosity ($\beta_{l|m}=1.91\pm0.94$) and a nearly self-similar slope for the temperature ($\beta_{t|m}=0.78\pm0.43$). Intrinsic scatters of X-ray properties appear to be positively correlated at a fixed mass (median correlation factor $\rho_{X_1X_2|m}\sim0.34$) due to dynamical state and merger history of the halos. Positive correlations with the weak lensing mass (median correlation factor $\rho_{m_\text{wl}X|m}\sim0.35$) can be connected to triaxiality and orientation. Comparison of weak lensing and hydrostatic masses suggests a small role played by non-thermal pressure support ($9\pm17\%$)., Comment: 19 pages; in press on MNRAS. We present the first catalogue of galaxy cluster candidates derived from the third data release of the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-DR3). The sample of clusters has been produced using the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO) algorithm. In this analysis AMICO takes advantage of the luminosity and spatial distribution of galaxies only, not considering colours. In this way, we prevent any selection effect related to the presence or absence of the red-sequence in the clusters. The catalogue contains 7988 candidate galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.13.5 with a purity approaching 95% over the entire redshift range. In addition to the catalogue of galaxy clusters we also provide a catalogue of galaxies with their probabilistic association to galaxy clusters. We quantify the sample purity, completeness and the uncertainties of the detection properties, such as richness, redshift, and position, by means of mock galaxy catalogues derived directly from the data. This preserves their statistical properties including photo-z uncertainties, unknown absorption across the survey, missing data, spatial correlation of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Being based on the real data, such mock catalogues do not have to rely on the assumptions on which numerical simulations and semi-analytic models are based on. The possibly unbiased selection process in surveys of the Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect can unveil new populations of galaxy clusters. We performed a weak lensing analysis of the PSZ2LenS sample, i.e. the PSZ2 galaxy clusters detected by the Planck mission in the sky portion covered by the lensing surveys CFHTLenS and RCSLenS. PSZ2LenS consists of 35 clusters and it is a statistically complete and homogeneous subsample of the PSZ2 catalogue. The Planck selected clusters appear to be unbiased tracers of the massive end of the cosmological haloes. The mass concentration relation of the sample is in excellent agreement with predictions from the Lambda cold dark matter model. Context. Scaling relations between cluster properties embody the formation and evolution of cosmic structure. Intrinsic scatters and correlations between X-ray properties are determined from merger history, baryonic processes, and dynamical state. Aims. We look for an unbiased measurement of the scatter covariance matrix between the three main X-ray observable quantities attainable in large X-ray surveys -- temperature, luminosity, and gas mass. This also gives us the cluster property with the lowest conditional intrinsic scatter at fixed mass. Methods. Intrinsic scatters and correlations can be measured under the assumption that the observable properties of the intra-cluster medium hosted in clusters are log-normally distributed around power-law scaling relations. The proposed method is self-consistent, based on minimal assumptions, and requires neither the external calibration by weak lensing, dynamical, or hydrostatic masses nor the knowledge of the mass completeness. Results. We analyzed the 100 brightest clusters detected in the XXL Survey and their X-ray properties measured within a fixed radius of 300 kpc. The gas mass is the less scattered proxy (~8%). The temperature (~20%) is intrinsically less scattered than the luminosity (~30%) but it is measured with a larger observational uncertainty. We found some evidence that gas mass, temperature and luminosity are positively correlated. Time-evolutions are in agreement with the self-similar scenario, but the luminosity-temperature and the gas mass-temperature relations are steeper. Conclusions. Positive correlations between X-ray properties can be determined by the dynamical state and the merger history of the halos. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a radio halo in the high-redshift galaxy cluster PSZ2 G099.86+58.45 (z = 0.616) with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) at 120-168 MHz. This is one of the most distant radio halos discovered so far. The diffuse emission extends over ∼1 Mpc and has a morphology similar to that of the X-ray emission as revealed by XMM-Newton data. The halo is very faint at higher frequencies and is barely detected by follow-up 1-2 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations, which enable us to constrain the radio spectral index to be α ≲ 1.5-1.6, i.e., with properties between canonical and ultra-steep spectrum radio halos. Radio halos are currently explained as synchrotron radiation from relativistic electrons that are re-accelerated in the intracluster medium by turbulence driven by energetic mergers. We show that in such a framework radio halos are expected to be relatively common at ∼150 MHz (∼30%-60%) in clusters with mass and redshift similar to PSZ2 G099.86+58.45; however, at least two-thirds of these radio halos should have a steep spectrum and thus be very faint above ∼1 GHz frequencies. Furthermore, because the luminosity of radio halos at high redshift depends strongly on the magnetic field strength in the hosting clusters, future LOFAR observations will also provide vital information on the origin and amplification of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters.© 2019. The possibility of determining the value of the Hubble constant using observations of galaxy clusters in X-ray and microwave wavelengths through the Sunyaev Zeldovich (SZ) effect has long been known. Previous measurements have been plagued by relatively large errors in the observational data and severe biases induced, for example, by cluster triaxiality and clumpiness. The advent of \textit{Planck} allows us to map the Compton parameter y, that is, the amplitude of the SZ effect, with unprecedented accuracy at intermediate cluster-centric radii, which in turn allows performing a detailed spatially resolved comparison with X-ray measurements. Given such higher quality observational data, we developed a Bayesian approach that combines informed priors on the physics of the intracluster medium obtained from hydrodynamical simulations of massive clusters with measurement uncertainties. We apply our method to a sample of 61 galaxy clusters with redshifts up to z < 0.5 observed with Planck and XMM-Newton observations and find H_0=67 \pm 3 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}., 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

In recent years, the availability of large, complete cluster samples has enabled numerous cosmological parameter inference analyses using cluster number counts. These have provided constraints on the cosmic matter density $\Omega_m$ and the amplitude of matter density fluctuations $\sigma_8$ alternative to those obtained from other standard probes. However, systematics uncertainties, such as the mass calibration bias and selection effects, may still significantly affect these data analyses. Hence, it is timely to explore other proxies of galaxy cluster cosmology that can provide cosmological constraints complementary to those obtained from cluster number counts. Here, we use measurements of the cluster sparsity from weak lensing mass estimates of the LC$^2$-{\it single} and HSC-XXL cluster catalogs to infer constraints on a flat $\Lambda$CDM model. The cluster sparsity has the advantage of being insensitive to selection and mass calibration bias. On the other hand, it primarily constrains a degenerate combination of $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$ (along approximately constant curves of $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3}$), and to less extent the reduced Hubble parameter $h$. Hence, in order to break the internal parameter degeneracies we perform a combined likelihood analysis of cluster sparsities with cluster gas mass fraction measurements and BAO data. We find marginal constraints that are competitive with those from other standard cosmic probes: $\Omega_m=0.316\pm 0.013$, $\sigma_8=0.757\pm 0.067$ (corresponding to $S_8=0.776\pm 0.064$) and $h=0.696\pm 0.017$ at $1\sigma$. Moreover, assuming a conservative Gaussian prior on the mass bias of gas mass fraction data, we find a lower limit on the gas depletion factor $Y_{b,500c}\gtrsim 0.89$., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. We reconstruct the two-dimensional (2D) matter distributions in 20 high-mass galaxy clusters selected from the CLASH survey by using the new approach of performing a joint weak gravitational lensing analysis of 2D shear and azimuthally averaged magnification measurements. This combination allows for a complete analysis of the field, effectively breaking the mass-sheet degeneracy. In a Bayesian framework, we simultaneously constrain the mass profile and morphology of each individual cluster, assuming an elliptical Navarro-Frenk-White halo characterized by the mass, concentration, projected axis ratio, and position angle (PA) of the projected major axis. We find that spherical mass estimates of the clusters from azimuthally averaged weak-lensing measurements in previous work are in excellent agreement with our results from a full 2D analysis. Combining all 20 clusters in our sample, we detect the elliptical shape of weak-lensing halos at the 5σ significance level within a scale of 2 Mpc h. The median projected axis ratio is 0.67 ± 0.07 at a virial mass of M = (15.2 ± 2.8) × 10 M, which is in agreement with theoretical predictions from recent numerical simulations of the standard collisionless cold dark matter model. We also study misalignment statistics of the brightest cluster galaxy, X-ray, thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, and strong-lensing morphologies with respect to the weak-lensing signal. Among the three baryonic tracers studied here, we find that the X-ray morphology is best aligned with the weak-lensing mass distribution, with a median misalignment angle of |ΔPA| = 21° ± 7°. We also conduct a stacked quadrupole shear analysis of the 20 clusters assuming that the X-ray major axis is aligned with that of the projected mass distribution. This yields a consistent axis ratio of 0.67 ± 0.10, suggesting again a tight alignment between the intracluster gas and dark matter. © 2018. The American Astronomical Society. We present the reconstruction of hydrostatic mass profiles in 13 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters that have been mapped in their X-ray and SZ signal out to $R_{200}$ for the XMM-Newton Cluster Outskirts Project (X-COP). Using profiles of the gas temperature, density and pressure that have been spatially resolved out to (median value) 0.9 $R_{500}$, 1.8 $R_{500}$, and 2.3 $R_{500}$, respectively, we are able to recover the hydrostatic gravitating mass profile with several methods and using different mass models. The hydrostatic masses are recovered with a relative (statistical) median error of 3% at $R_{500}$ and 6% at $R_{200}$. By using several different methods to solve the equation of the hydrostatic equilibrium, we evaluate some of the systematic uncertainties to be of the order of 5% at both $R_{500}$ and $R_{200}$. A Navarro-Frenk-White profile provides the best-fit in nine cases out of 13, with the remaining four cases that do not show a statistically significant tension with it. The distribution of the mass concentration follows the correlations with the total mass predicted from numerical simulations with a scatter of 0.18 dex, with an intrinsic scatter on the hydrostatic masses of 0.15 dex. We compare them with the estimates of the total gravitational mass obtained through X-ray scaling relations applied to $Y_X$, gas fraction and $Y_{SZ}$, and from weak lensing and galaxy dynamics techniques, and measure a substantial agreement with the results from scaling laws, from WL at both $R_{500}$ and $R_{200}$ (with differences below 15%), from cluster velocity dispersions, but a significant tension with the caustic masses that tend to underestimate the hydrostatic masses by 40% at $R_{200}$. We also compare these measurements with predictions from alternative models to the Cold Dark Matter, like the "Emergent Gravity" and MOND scenarios., 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. We perform a three-dimensional triaxial analysis of 16 X-ray regular and 4 high-magnification galaxy clusters selected from the CLASH survey by combining two-dimensional weak-lensing and central strong-lensing constraints. In a Bayesian framework, we constrain the intrinsic structure and geometry of each individual cluster assuming a triaxial Navarro-Frenk-White halo with arbitrary orientations, characterized by the mass $M_{200\mathrm{c}}$, halo concentration $C_{200\mathrm{c}}$, and triaxial axis ratios ($q_{\mathrm{a}} \le q_{\mathrm{b}}$), and investigate scaling relations between these halo structural parameters. From triaxial modeling of the X-ray-selected subsample, we find that the halo concentration decreases with increasing cluster mass, with a mean concentration of $C_{200\mathrm{c}} = 4.82\pm0.30$ at the pivot mass $M_{200\mathrm{c}}=10^{15}M_{\odot}h^{-1}$. This is consistent with the result from spherical modeling, $C_{200\mathrm{c}}=4.51\pm 0.14$. Independently of the priors, the minor-to-major axis ratio $q_{\mathrm{a}}$ of our full sample exhibits a clear deviation from the spherical configuration ($q_{\mathrm{a}}=0.52 \pm 0.04$ at $10^{15}M_{\odot}h^{-1}$ with uniform priors), with a weak dependence on the cluster mass. Combining all 20 clusters, we obtain a joint ensemble constraint on the minor-to-major axis ratio of $q_{\mathrm{a}}=0.652^{+0.162}_{-0.078}$ and a lower bound on the intermediate-to-major axis ratio of $q_{\mathrm{b}}>0.63$ at the $2\sigma$ level from an analysis with uniform priors. Assuming priors on the axis ratios derived from numerical simulations, we constrain the degree of triaxiality for the full sample to be $\mathcal{T}=0.79 \pm 0.03$ at $10^{15}M_{\odot}h^{-1}$, indicating a preference for a prolate geometry of cluster halos. We find no statistical evidence for an orientation bias ($f_{\mathrm{geo}}=0.93 \pm 0.07$) (abridged), Comment: Accepted by the ApJ. Galaxy clusters trace the highest density peaks in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Their clustering provides a powerful probe that can be exploited in combination with cluster mass measurements to strengthen the cosmological constraints provided by cluster number counts. We investigate the spatial properties of a homogeneous sample of X-ray selected galaxy clusters from the XXL survey, the largest programme carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite. The measurements are compared to $\Lambda$-cold dark matter predictions, and used in combination with self-calibrated mass scaling relations to constrain the effective bias of the sample, $b_{eff}$, and the matter density contrast, $\Omega_{\rm M}$. We measured the angle-averaged two-point correlation function of the XXL cluster sample. The analysed catalogue consists of $182$ X-ray selected clusters from the XXL second data release, with median redshift $\langle z \rangle=0.317$ and median mass $\langle M_{500} \rangle\simeq1.3\cdot10^{14} M_\odot$. Context. We present an estimation of cosmological parameters with clusters of galaxies. Aims. We constrain the $\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$, and $w$ parameters from a stand-alone sample of X-ray clusters detected in the 50 deg$^2$ XMM-XXL survey with a well-defined selection function. Methods. We analyse the redshift distribution of a sample comprising 178 high S/N clusters out to a redshift of unity. The cluster sample scaling relations are determined in a self-consistent manner. Results. In a lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, the cosmology favoured by the XXL clusters compares well with results derived from the Planck S-Z clusters for a totally different sample (mass/redshift range, selection biases, and scaling relations). However, with this preliminary sample and current mass calibration uncertainty, we find no inconsistency with the Planck CMB cosmology. If we relax the $w$ parameter, the Planck CMB uncertainties increase by a factor of $\sim$10 and become comparable with those from XXL clusters. Combining the two probes allows us to put constraints on $\Omega_m$=0.316$\pm$0.060, $\sigma_8$=0.814$\pm$0.054, and $w$=-1.02$\pm$0.20. Conclusions. This first self-consistent cosmological analysis of a sample of serendipitous XMM clusters already provides interesting insights into the constraining power of the XXL survey. The ΛCDM model of structure formation makes strong predictions on the concentration and shape of dark matter (DM) halos, which are determined by mass accretion processes. Comparison between predicted shapes and observations provides a geometric test of the ΛCDM model. Accurate and precise measurements needs a full three-dimensional (3D) analysis of the cluster mass distribution. We accomplish this with a multi-probe 3D analysis of the X-ray regular Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) clusters combining strong and weak lensing, X-ray photometry and spectroscopy, and the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect (SZe). The cluster shapes and concentrations are consistent with ΛCDM predictions. The CLASH clusters are randomly oriented, as expected given the sample selection criteria. Shapes agree with numerical results for DM-only halos, which hints at baryonic physics being less effective in making halos rounder.

We present the observational evidence of the 2-halo term in the stacked shear profile of a sample of about 1200 optically selected galaxy clusters based on imaging data and the public shear catalog from the CFHTLenS. We find that the halo bias, a measure of the correlated distribution of matter around galaxy clusters, has amplitude and correlation with galaxy cluster mass in very good agreement with the predictions based on the LCDM standard cosmological model. The mass-concentration relation is flat but higher than theoretical predictions. Multi-wavelength techniques can probe the distribution and the physical properties of baryons and dark matter in galaxy clusters from the inner regions out to the peripheries. We present a full three-dimensional analysis combining strong and weak lensing, X-ray surface brightness and temperature, and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The method is applied to MACS J1206.2-0847, a remarkably regular, face-on, massive, M_{200}=(1.1+-0.2)*10^{15}M_Sun/h, cluster at z=0.44. The measured concentration, c_{200}=6.3+-1.2, and the triaxial shape are common to halos formed in a LCDM scenario. The gas has settled in and follows the shape of the gravitational potential, which is evidence of pressure equilibrium via the shape theorem. Mass is a fundamental property of galaxy groups and clusters. In theory weak gravitational lensing will enable an approximately unbiased measurement of mass, but parametric methods for extracting cluster masses from data require the additional knowledge of concentration. Measurements of both mass and concentration are limited by the degeneracy between the two parameters, particularly in low mass, high redshift systems where the signal-to-noise is low. In this paper we develop a hierarchical model of mass and concentration for mass inference we test our method on toy data and then apply it to a sample of galaxy groups and poor clusters down to masses of $\sim$ 1e13 M$_\odot$. Our fit and model gives a relationship among masses, concentrations and redshift that allow prediction of these parameters from incomplete and noisy future measurements. Additionally the underlying population can be used to infer an observationally based concentration-mass relation. Our method is equivalent to a quasi- stacking approach with the degree of stacking set by the data. We also demonstrate that mass and concentration derived from pure stacking can be offset from the population mean with differing values depending on the method of stacking., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Galaxy clusters are the most recent products of hierarchical accretion over cosmological scales. The gas accreted from the cosmic field is thermalized inside the cluster halo. Gas entropy and pressure are expected to have a self-similar behaviour with their radial distribution following a power law and a generalized Navarro-Frenk-White profile, respectively. This has been shown also in many different hydrodynamical simulations. We derive the spatially-resolved thermodynamical properties of 47 X-ray galaxy clusters observed with Chandra in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 1.2, the largest sample investigated so far in this redshift range with X-rays spectroscopy, with a particular care in reconstructing the gas entropy and pressure radial profiles. We search for deviation from the self-similar behaviour and look for possible evolution with redshift. The entropy and pressure profiles lie very close to the baseline prediction from gravitational structure formation. We show that these profiles deviate from the baseline prediction as function of redshift, in particular at z > 0.75, where, in the central regions, we observe higher values of the entropy (by a factor of 2.2) and systematically lower estimates (by a factor of 2.5) of the pressure. The effective polytropic index, which retains informations about the thermal distribution of the gas, shows a slight linear positive evolution with the redshift and the concentration of the dark matter distribution. The accurate determination of the mass of galaxy clusters is crucial to precision astronomy. We have often to deal with either biased measurements or precise determinations of peculiar quantities. A better understanding of intrinsic shapes plays a major role. We consider how the shape of the intracluster medium (ICM) can be inferred by combining X-ray photometry and spectroscopy with the measurement of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZe). Together with gravitational lensing (GL), we can get unbiased estimates of mass and concentration and probe the hydrodynamical properties of the cluster. (© 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present the XXL Survey, the largest XMM programme totaling some 6.9 Ms to date and involving an international consortium of roughly 100 members. The XXL Survey covers two extragalactic areas of 25 deg2 each at a point-source sensitivity of ~ 5E-15 erg/sec/cm2 in the [0.5-2] keV band (completeness limit). The survey's main goals are to provide constraints on the dark energy equation of state from the space-time distribution of clusters of galaxies and to serve as a pathfinder for future, wide-area X-ray missions. We review science objectives, including cluster studies, AGN evolution, and large-scale structure, that are being conducted with the support of approximately 30 follow-up programmes. We describe the 542 XMM observations along with the associated multi-lambda and numerical simulation programmes. We give a detailed account of the X-ray processing steps and describe innovative tools being developed for the cosmological analysis. The paper provides a thorough evaluation of the X-ray data, including quality controls, photon statistics, exposure and background maps, and sky coverage. Source catalogue construction and multi-lambda associations are briefly described. This material will be the basis for the calculation of the cluster and AGN selection functions, critical elements of the cosmological and science analyses. The XXL multi-lambda data set will have a unique lasting legacy value for cosmological and extragalactic studies and will serve as a calibration resource for future dark energy studies with clusters and other X-ray selected sources. With the present article, we release the XMM XXL photon and smoothed images along with the corresponding exposure maps. Mass measurements of astronomical objects are most wanted but still elusive. We need them to trace the formation and evolution of cosmic structure but we can get direct measurements only for a minority. This lack can be circumvented with a proxy and a scaling relation. The twofold goal of estimating the unbiased relation and finding the right proxy value to plug in can be hampered by systematics, selection effects, Eddington/Malmquist biases and time evolution. We present a Bayesian hierarchical method which deals with these issues. Masses to be predicted are treated as missing data in the regression and are estimated together with the scaling parameters. The calibration subsample with measured masses does not need to be representative of the full sample as far as it follows the same scaling relation. We apply the method to forecast weak lensing calibrated masses of the Planck, redMaPPer and MCXC clusters. Planck masses are biased low with respect to weak lensing calibrated masses, with a bias more pronounced for high redshift clusters. MCXC masses are under-estimated by ~20 per cent, which may be ascribed to hydrostatic bias. Packages and catalogs are made available with the paper., 20 pages; 18 figures. Galaxy clusters are the most recent, gravitationally-bound products of the hierarchical mass accretion over cosmological scales. How the mass is concentrated is predicted to correlate with the total mass in the cluster's halo, with systems at higher mass being less concentrated at given redshift and for any given mass, systems with lower concentration are found at higher redshifts. Through a spatial and spectral X-ray analysis, we reconstruct the total mass profile of 47 galaxy clusters observed with Chandra in the redshift range $0.40.4$, and is well suited to provide the first constraint on the concentration--mass relation at $z>0.7$ from X-ray analysis. Under the assumptions that the distribution of the X-ray emitting gas is spherically symmetric and in hydrostatic equilibrium, we combine the deprojected gas density and spectral temperature profiles through the hydrostatic equilibrium equation to recover the parameters that describe a NFW total mass distribution. The comparison with results from weak lensing analysis reveals a very good agreement both for masses and concentrations. Uncertainties are however too large to make any robust conclusion on the hydrostatic bias of these systems. The relation is well described by the form $c \propto M^B (1+z)^C$, with $B=-0.50 \pm 0.20$, $C=0.12 \pm 0.61$ (at 68.3\% confidence), it is slightly steeper than the one predicted by numerical simulations ($B\sim-0.1$) and does not show any evident redshift evolution. We obtain the first constraints on the properties of the concentration--mass relation at $z > 0.7$ from X-ray data, showing a reasonable good agreement with recent numerical predictions., Comment: A&A accepted, 18 pages, 13 figures, 1 Appendix

Knowledge of mass and concentration of galaxy clusters is crucial to understand their formation and evolution. Unbiased estimates require the understanding of the shape and orientation of the halo as well as its equilibrium status. We propose a novel method to determine the intrinsic properties of galaxy clusters from a multi-wavelength data set spanning from X-ray spectroscopic and photometric data to gravitational lensing to the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZe). The method relies on two quite non informative geometrical assumptions: the distributions of total matter or gas are approximately ellipsoidal and co-aligned; they have different, constant axial ratios but share the same degree of triaxiality. Weak and strong lensing probe the features of the total mass distribution in the plane of the sky. X-ray data measure size and orientation of the gas in the plane of the sky. Comparison with the SZ amplitude fixes the elongation of the gas along the line of sight. These constraints are deprojected thanks to Bayesian inference. The mass distribution is described as a Navarro-Frenk-White halo with arbitrary orientation, gas density and temperature are modelled with parametric profiles. We applied the method to Abell 1689. Independently of the priors, the cluster is massive, M_{200}=(1.3+-0.2)*10^{15}M_sun, and over-concentrated, c_{200}=8+-1, but still consistent with theoretical predictions. The total matter is triaxial (minor to major axis ratio ~0.5+-0.1 exploiting priors from N-body simulations) with the major axis nearly orientated along the line of sight. The gas is rounder (minor to major axis ratio ~0.6+-0.1) and deviates from hydrostatic equilibrium. The high concentrations derived for several strong-lensing clusters present a major inconsistency between theoretical LambdaCDM expectations and measurements. Triaxiality and orientation biases might be at the origin of this disagreement, as clusters elongated along the line-of-sight would have a relatively higher projected mass density, boosting the resulting lensing properties. Analyses of statistical samples can probe further these effects and crucially reduce biases. In this work we perform a fully triaxial strong-lensing analysis of the 12 MACS clusters at z > 0.5, a complete X-ray selected sample, and fully account for the impact of the intrinsic 3D shapes on their strong lensing properties. We first construct strong-lensing mass models for each cluster based on multiple-images, and fit projected ellipsoidal Navarro-Frenk-White halos with arbitrary orientations to each mass distribution. We then invert the measured surface mass densities using Bayesian statistics. Although the Einstein radii of this sample are significantly larger than predicted by LambdaCDM, here we find that the mass-concentration relation is in full agreement with results from N-body simulations. The z > 0.5 MACS clusters suffer from a moderate form of orientation bias as may be expected for X-ray selected samples. Being mostly unrelaxed, at a relatively high redshift, with high X-ray luminosity and noticeable substructures, these clusters may lie outside the standard concentration-Einstein radius relation. Our results remark the importance of triaxiality and properly selected samples for understanding galaxy clusters properties, and suggest that higher-z, unrelaxed low-concentration clusters form a different class of prominent strong gravitational lenses. Arc redshift confirmation and weak lensing data in the outer region are needed to further refine our analysis.

The method exploits X-ray spectroscopic and photometric data plus measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZe). The gas distribution is modelled with an ellipsoidal parametric profile who can fit observed X-ray surface-brightness and temperature. Comparison with the SZ amplitude fixes the elongation along the line of sight. Finally, Bayesian inference allows us to deproject the measured elongation and the projected ellipticity and constrain the intrinsic shape and orientation of the cluster. We apply the method to the rich cluster Abell 1689, which was targeted by the Chandra and XMM satellites as well as by several SZe observatories. Observations cover in detail a region

Halos formed in the standard Lambda cold dark matter framework should follow an universal mass density profile and fit a well defined mass-concentration relation. Lensing analyses of clusters with a large Einstein radius seem to contradict this scenario, with the massive cluster Abell 1689 being often claimed as a notable example of a highly over-concentrated halo. Shape and orientation biases in lensing studies might be at the basis of this disagreement between theory and observations. We developed a method for a full three-dimensional analysis of strong and weak lensing data. Surface density maps estimated from lensing are de-projected to infer the actual triaxial structure of the cluster, whose mass distribution is approximated as an ellipsoidal Navarro-Frenk-White halo with arbitrary orientation. Inversion is performed under competing a priori assumptions, integrated in the method thanks to Bayesian statistics. We applied the method to A1689. Whatever the considered priors on shape and orientation, both weak and strong lensing analyses found the halo to be slightly over-concentrated but still consistent with theoretical predictions. We found some evidence for a mildly triaxial lens (minor to major axis ratio ~ 0.5 +- 0.2) with the major axis orientated along the line of sight. Exploiting priors from N-body simulations, we found mass M_{200} = (1.3 +- 0.4)x 10^{15}M_Sun and concentration c_{200} =10+-3 for the weak lensing analysis of Subaru data, M_{200} = (1.7 +- 0.3)x 10^{15}M_Sun and c_{200} =6.1+-0.9 for the strong lensing analysis of multiple image systems, and M_{200} = (1.3 +- 0.2)\times 10^{15}M_Sun and c_{200} =7.3+-0.8 for the combined weak plus strong analysis.
