Search

Absorption line spectroscopy of foreground gas in the spectra of background quasars has revealed some clear cases where neutral gas is present and associated with dwarf galaxies. Spectroscopy of Lyα and low-ionization metal lines can be combined to derive neutral gas phase metallicities. The damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra are the clearest cases of absorption by predominantly neutral gas regions. Here we present some results on neutral gas phase metallicities for cases where the DLA is clearly associated with a dwarf galaxy. We find that the neutral gas phase metallicities in these systems are similar to those in other DLAs. We argue that there may be many unrecognized cases where a DLA is actually associated with a dwarf galaxy even though there is a luminous galaxy within 100 kpc of the quasar sightline.

The results of an investigation into whether or not eclipse shadow bands have an atmospheric origin are presented. Using high altitude balloon and ground-based photodiode arrays during the 21 August 2017 total solar eclipse, data revealing the light patterns before and after totality were collected. These data were then analyzed using spectrograms. Both at the altitude of the balloon and on the ground, a sustained ~ 4.5 Hz signal was detected a few minutes before and after totality. This signal was coherent over a scale greater than 10 cm and detected in four separate balloon photodiodes and 16 ground photodiodes. At higher frequencies, up to at least 30 Hz, brief chaotic signals that were disorganized as a function of time were detected on the ground, but not at the altitude of the balloon and appeared mostly uncorrelated over a length scale of 10 cm. Some of our ground arrays utilized red and blue filters, but neither the sustained 4.5 Hz signal nor the higher frequency signals showed a strong dependence on filter color. On the ground we made a video of the shadow bands on a scaled white screen. We judged that the bands were roughly parallel to the orientation of the bright thin crescent Sun before and after totality and inferred that their propagation velocity was about v ~ 59 cm /s. Shadow band signals other than the sustained signal at ~ 4.5 Hz are consistent with atmospheric scintillation theory. These results are surprising. Based on accounts in the literature we expected to confirm the atmospheric scintillation theory of eclipse shadow bands, but instead we detected a sustained ~ 4.5 Hz signal at both high altitude and on the ground. This signal cannot be due to atmospheric scintillation and we ran a check to make sure this signal is not an artifact of our electronics. We present the study of a sample of nine QSO fields, with damped-Ly-alpha (DLA) or sub-DLA systems at z~0.6, observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. By suitably positioning the X-Shooter slit based on high spatial resolution images of HST/ACS we are able to detect absorbing galaxies in 7 out of 9 fields (~ 78\% success rate) at impact parameters from 10 to 30 kpc. In 5 out of 7 fields the absorbing galaxies are confirmed via detection of multiple emission lines at the redshift of DLAs where only 1 out of 5 also emits a faint continuum. In 2 out of these 5 fields we detect a second galaxy at the DLA redshift. Extinction corrected star formation rates (SFR) of these DLA-galaxies, estimated using their H-alpha fluxes, are in the range 0.3-6.7 M_sun yr^-1. The emission metallicities of these five DLA-galaxies are estimated to be from 0.2 to 0.9 Z_sun. Based on the Voigt profile fits to absorption lines we find the metallicity of the absorbing neutral gas to be in a range of 0.05--0.6 Z_sun. The two remaining DLA-galaxies are quiescent galaxies with SFR < 0.4 M_sun yr^-1 (3-sigma) presenting continuum emission but weak or no emission lines. Using X-Shooter spectrum we estimate i-band absolute magnitude of -19.5+/-0.2 for both these DLA-galaxies that indicates they are sub-L* galaxies. Comparing our results with that of other surveys in the literature we find a possible redshift evolution of the SFR of DLA-galaxies.

We present ten metallicity measurements for quasar absorbers near $z=1.2$ that were selected for having unusually significant ZnII absorption in their SDSS spectra. Follow-up UV space spectroscopy of the Ly$\alpha$ region shows that all ten have damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption, corresponding to neutral hydrogen column densities in the range $2.4\times 10^{20}$ $\le$ N(HI) $\le$ $2.5\times 10^{21}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$, and indicating that the gas is very optically thick and essentially neutral. The sample is a very small subset of systems compiled by searching the University of Pittsburgh catalog of $\approx 30,000$ intervening MgII absorption line systems in SDSS quasar spectra up to DR7. We started by isolating $\approx 3,000$ that had strong MgII absorption in the redshift interval $1.0 < z < 1.5$ in brighter background quasars. Of these, 36 exhibited significant absorption near ZnII. Space UV spectroscopy was then obtained for nine of these (25% of the total), and a tenth system in a fainter quasar was found in the HST archives. The result is a representative sample of the highest Zn$^+$ columns of gas within the DLA population. These ZnII-selected systems define the upper envelope of DLA metallicities near $z=1.2$. They show a tight anti-correlation between N(HI) and [Zn/H], with the higher metallicity systems clearly exhibiting more depletion based on [Cr/Zn] values. The various metal-line measurements (Zn, Cr, Si, Fe, Mn) indicate evolved neutral gas with $-0.9 \le$ [Zn/H] $\le +0.4$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Quasar damped Ly-alpha (DLA) absorption line systems with redshifts z

We present the results of a survey for CaII 3934,3969 absorption-line systems culled from ~ 95,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 and Data Release 9 quasar spectra. With 435 doublets identified in the catalog, this list is the largest CaII catalog compiled to date, spanning redshifts z < 1.34, which corresponds to the most recent ~ 8.9 Gyrs of the history of the Universe. We derive statistics on the CaII rest equivalent width distribution (REW) and incidence (number density per unit redshift). We find that the lambda3934 REW distribution cannot be described by a single exponential function. A double exponential function is required to produce a satisfactory description. The function can be written as a sum of weak and strong components: dn/dW = (N_wk*/W_wk*) exp(-W/W_wk*) + (N_str*/W_str*) exp(-W/W_str*). A maximum likelihood fit to the unbinned data indicates: N_wk*=0.140 +/- 0.029, W_wk*=0.165 +/- 0.020 A, N_str*=0.024 +/- 0.020, and W_str*=0.427 +/- 0.101 A. This suggests that the CaII absorbers are composed of at least two distinct populations. The incidence (product of integrated absorber cross section and their co-moving number density) of the overall CaII absorber population does not show evidence for evolution in the standard cosmology. The normalization of the no-evolution curve, i.e., the value of the CaII incidence extrapolated to redshift z=0, for lambda 3934 >= 0.3 A, is n_0=0.017 +/- 0.001. In comparison to MgII surveys, we found that only 3% of MgII systems in the SDSS have CaII, confirming that it is rare to identify CaII in quasar absorption-line surveys. We also report on some preliminary investigations of the nature of the two populations of CaII absorbers, and show that they can likely be distinguished using their MgII properties., Submitted to MNRAS

We describe the algorithm used to select the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample for the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) using photometric data from both the SDSS and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). LRG targets are required to meet a set of color selection criteria and have z-band and i-band MODEL magnitudes z < 19.95 and 19.9 < i < 21.8, respectively. Our algorithm selects roughly 50 LRG targets per square degree, the great majority of which lie in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1.0 (median redshift 0.71). We demonstrate that our methods are highly effective at eliminating stellar contamination and lower-redshift galaxies. We perform a number of tests using spectroscopic data from SDSS-III/BOSS to determine the redshift reliability of our target selection and its ability to meet the science requirements of eBOSS. The SDSS spectra are of high enough signal-to-noise ratio that at least 89% of the target sample yields secure redshift measurements. We also present tests of the uniformity and homogeneity of the sample, demonstrating that it should be clean enough for studies of the large-scale structure of the universe at higher redshifts than SDSS-III/BOSS LRGs reached., Submitted in ApJS, 15 pages, 10 figures

The Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) can be probed through the analysis of absorbing systems in the line-of-sight to bright background quasars. We present measurements of the metallicity of a new sample of 15 sub-damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (sub-DLAs, defined as absorbers with 19.0 < log N(H I) < 20.3) with redshift 0.584 < $\rm z_{abs}$ < 3.104 from the ESO Ultra-Violet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) Advanced Data Products Quasar Sample (EUADP). We combine these results with other measurements from the literature to produce a compilation of metallicity measurements for 92 sub-DLAs as well as a sample of 362 DLAs. We apply a multi-element analysis to quantify the amount of dust in these two classes of systems. We find that either the element depletion patterns in these systems differ from the Galactic depletion patterns or they have a different nucleosynthetic history than our own Galaxy. We propose a new method to derive the velocity width of absorption profiles, using the modeled Voigt profile features. The correlation between the velocity width delta_V90 of the absorption profile and the metallicity is found to be tighter for DLAs than for sub-DLAs. We report hints of a bimodal distribution in the [Fe/H] metallicity of low redshift (z < 1.25) sub-DLAs, which is unseen at higher redshifts. This feature can be interpreted as a signature from the metal-poor, accreting gas and the metal-rich, outflowing gas, both being traced by sub-DLAs at low redshifts., Comment: 64 pages, 31 figures, 27 tables. We present an empirical connection between cold (∼104 K) gas in galactic haloes and star formation. Using a sample of more than 8500 Mg ii absorbers from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectra, we report the detection of a 15σ correlation between the rest equivalent width W0 of Mg ii absorbers and the associated [O ii] luminosity, an estimator of star formation rate. This correlation has interesting implications: using only observable quantities we show that Mg ii absorbers trace a substantial fraction of the global [O ii] luminosity density and recover the overall star formation history of the Universe derived from classical emission estimators up to z∼ 2. We then show that the distribution function of Mg ii rest equivalent widths, dN/dW0, inherits both its shape and amplitude from the [O ii] luminosity function Φ(L). These distributions can be naturally connected, without any free parameter. Our results imply a high covering factor of cold gas around star-forming galaxies: C≳ 0.5, favouring outflows as the mechanism responsible for Mg ii absorption. We then argue that intervening Mg ii absorbers and blueshifted Mg ii absorption seen in the spectra of star-forming galaxies are essentially the same systems, implying that the observed outflowing gas can reach radii of ∼50 kpc. These results not only shed light on the nature of Mg ii absorbers but also provide us with a new probe of star formation, in absorption, i.e. in a way which does not suffer from dust extinction and with a redshift-independent sensitivity. As shown in this analysis, such a tool can be applied in a noise-dominated regime, i.e. using a data set for which emission lines are not detected in individual objects. This is of particular interest for high-redshift studies.

We present results from a search for galaxies that give rise to damped Lyman α (DLA), sub-DLA and Lyman limit system (LLS) absorption at redshifts 0.1 ≲z≲ 1 in the spectra of background quasars. The sample was formed from a larger sample of strong Mg ii absorbers (Wλ27960≥ 0.3 A) whose H i column densities were determined by measuring the Lyα line in Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra. Photometric redshifts, galaxy colours and proximity to the quasar sightline, in decreasing order of importance, were used to identify galaxies responsible for the absorption. Our sample includes 80 absorption systems for which the absorbing galaxies have been identified, of which 54 are presented here for the first time. In some cases a reasonable identification for the absorbing galaxy could not be made. The main results of this study are (i) the surface density of galaxies falls off exponentially with increasing impact parameter, b, from the quasar sightline relative to a constant background of galaxies, with an e-folding length of ≈46 kpc. Galaxies with b≳ 100 kpc calculated at the absorption redshift are statistically consistent with being unrelated to the absorption system, and are either background or foreground galaxies. (ii) is inversely correlated with b at the 3.0σ level of significance. DLA galaxies are found systematically closer to the quasar sightline, by a factor of 2, than are galaxies which give rise to sub-DLAs or LLSs. The median impact parameter is 17.4 kpc for the DLA galaxy sample, 33.3 kpc for the sub-DLA sample and 36.4 kpc for the LLS sample. We also find that the decline in with b can be roughly described by an exponential with an e-folding length of 12 kpc that occurs at . (iii) Absorber galaxy luminosity relative to L*, L/L*, is not significantly correlated with Wλ27960, or b. (iv) DLA, sub-DLA and LLS galaxies comprise a mix of spectral types, but are inferred to be predominantly late-type galaxies based on their spectral energy distributions. (v) The properties of low-redshift DLAs and sub-DLAs are very different in comparison to the properties of gas-rich galaxies at the present epoch. A significantly higher fraction of low-redshift absorbers have large b values, and a significantly higher fraction of the large b value galaxies have luminosities L < L*. The implications of these results are discussed.

(Abridged) Star formation-driven outflows are a critical phenomenon in theoretical treatments of galaxy evolution, despite the limited ability of observations to trace them across cosmological timescales. If the strongest MgII absorption-line systems detected in the spectra of background quasars arise in such outflows, "ultra-strong" MgII (USMgII) absorbers would identify significant numbers of galactic winds over a huge baseline in cosmic time, in a manner independent of the luminous properties of the galaxy. To this end, we present the first detailed imaging and spectroscopic study of the fields of two USMgII absorber systems culled from a statistical absorber catalog, with the goal of understanding the physical processes leading to the large velocity spreads that define such systems. Each field contains two bright emission-line galaxies at similar redshift (dv < 300 km/s) to that of the absorption. Lower-limits on their instantaneous star formation rates (SFR) from the observed OII and Hb line fluxes, and stellar masses from spectral template fitting indicate specific SFRs among the highest for their masses at z~0.7. Additionally, their 4000A break and Balmer absorption strengths imply they have undergone recent (~0.01 - 1 Gyr) starbursts. The concomitant presence of two rare phenomena - starbursts and USMgII absorbers - strongly implies a causal connection. We consider these data and USMgII absorbers in general in the context of various popular models, and conclude that galactic outflows are generally necessary to account for the velocity extent of the absorption. We favour starburst driven outflows over tidally-stripped gas from a major interaction which triggered the starburst as the energy source for the majority of systems. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results and speculate on the overall contribution of such systems to the global SFR density at z~0.7.

We report the first discovery of a QSO damped Lyα system (DLA) by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite. The system was initially identified as an Mg II absorption-line system (z abs = 1.028) in the spectrum of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) QSO J0203-0910 (z em = 1.58). The presence of unusually strong absorption due to metal lines of Zn II, Cr II, Mn II, and Fe II clearly suggested that it might be a DLA with N H I ≥ 2 × 1020 atoms cm–2. Follow-up GALEX NUV grism spectroscopy confirms that the system exhibits a DLA absorption line, with a measured H I column density of N H I = 1.50 ± 0.45 × 1021 atoms cm–2. By combining the GALEX N H I determination with the SDSS spectrum measurements of unsaturated metal-line absorption due to Zn II, which is generally not depleted onto grains, we find that the system's neutral-gas-phase metal abundance is [Zn/H] = –0.70 ± 0.22, or ≈20% solar. By way of comparison, although this system has one of the largest Zn+ column densities, its metal abundances are comparable to other DLAs at z ≈ 1. Measurements of the abundances of Cr, Fe, and Mn help to further pin down the evolutionary state of the absorber.

Using quasi-stellar object (QSO) absorption-line spectra obtained along closely spaced sight-lines, we examine the transverse sizes of regions containing large columns of neutral hydrogen gas at redshifts z ≈ 1.5. The observations are primarily of intervening damped Lyα (DLA) and sub-DLA absorption-line systems in gravitationally lensed QSOs. In particular, Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopy of the four-component Cloverleaf QSO (H1413+1143) reveals three new DLA/sub-DLA systems at z ≈ 1.44, 1.49 and 1.66. A neutral hydrogen column density of N HI ≥ 2 × 10 20 atoms cm ―2 is required for a system to be classified as a DLA, but none of the three systems has an H column density above the DLA threshold in all four components. Over component separations < 1.4 arcsec in the Cloverleaf, corresponding to transverse sizes of ≈5―12 h ―1 70 kpc, the HI column densities typically change by factors of ≈2―40. Similar observations of other QSOs containing absorption systems in the DLA regime are summarized from the literature. In addition to establishing approximate sizes for DLA regions, the results have implications for their volume-averaged HI gas number densities and neutral gas masses. By combining our results on DLA absorber sizes with published results on the sizes of lower column density QSO absorbers, which however arise in very ionized regions, we infer the useful relation that the typical transverse size of an absorber in the redshift interval z≈[1,2] is S abs ≈ 11 h ―1 70 [[N HI /10 20 ] ―1/4 kpc.

We present a statistical analysis of the photometric properties and spatial distribution of more than 2,800 MgII absorbers with 0.370.8\AA detected in SDSS quasar spectra. Using an improved image stacking technique, we measure the cross-correlation between MgII gas and light (in the g, r, i and z-bands) from 10 to 200 kpc and infer the light-weighted impact parameter distribution of MgII absorbers. Such a quantity is well described by a power-law with an index that strongly depends on W_0, ranging from ~-1 for W_0~ 1.5\AA. We summarize results from our recent SDSS survey for CaII quasar absorbers. The survey finds 435 absorbers at zb, which are ~2.4 times smaller than the weak absorbers (bstrong ~ 19 kpc versus bweak 45 kpc). Studies of CaII absorbers suggest links to molecular clouds, SFGs, and circumgalactic gas (CGG).

We present measurements of element abundance ratios and dust in CaII~absorbers identified in SDSS DR7+DR9. In an earlier paper we formed a statistical sample of 435 CaII absorbers and postulated that their statistical properties might be representative of at least two populations of absorbers. Here we show that if the absorbers are roughly divided into two subsamples with CaII rest equivalent widths larger and smaller than $W_0^{\lambda 3934} = 0.7$ \AA, they are then representative of two physically different populations. Comparisons of abundance ratios between the two CaII absorber populations indicate that the weaker $W_0^{\lambda 3934}$ absorbers have properties consistent with halo-type gas, while the stronger absorbers have properties intermediate between halo- and disk-type gas. We also show that, on average, the dust extinction properties of the overall sample is consistent with a LMC or SMC dust law, and the stronger absorbers are nearly 6 times more reddened than their weaker counterparts. The absorbed-to-unabsorbed composite flux ratio at $\lambda_{rest} = 2200$ \AA\ is $\mathcal{R} \approx 0.73$ and $E(B-V) \approx 0.046$ for the stronger CaII absorbers ($W_0^{\lambda 3934} \ge 0.7$ \AA), and $\mathcal{R} \approx 0.95$ and $E(B-V) \approx 0.011$ for the weaker CaII absorbers ($W_0^{\lambda 3934} < 0.7$ \AA)., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 19 pages, 12 figures

We have studied a sample of 809 Mg II absorption systems with 1.0 < z_abs < 1.86 in the spectra of SDSS QSOs, with the aim of understanding the nature and abundance of the dust and the chemical abundances in the intervening absorbers. Normalized, composite spectra were derived, for abundance measurements, for the full sample and several sub-samples, chosen on the basis of the line strengths and other absorber and QSO properties. Average extinction curves were obtained for the sub-samples by comparing their geometric mean spectra with those of matching samples of QSOs without absorbers in their spectra. There is clear evidence for the presence of dust in the intervening absorbers. The 2175 A feature is not present in the extinction curves, for any of the sub-samples. The extinction curves are similar to the SMC extinction curve with a rising UV extinction below 2200 A. The absorber rest frame colour excess, E(B-V), derived from the extinction curves, depends on the absorber properties and ranges from < 0.001 to 0.085 for various sub-samples. The column densities of several ions do not show such a correspondingly large variation. The depletion pattern is similar to halo clouds in the Galaxy. Assuming an SMC gas-to-dust ratio we find a trend of increasing abundance with decreasing extinction; systems with N_H I \~ 10^{20} cm^{-2} show solar abundance of Zn. The large velocity spread of strong Mg II systems seems to be mimicked by weak lines of other elements. The ionization of the absorbers, in general appears to be low. QSOs with absorbers are, in general, at least three times as likely to have highly reddened spectra as compared to QSOs without any absorption systems in their spectra.

The local power law relationship between the surface densities of neutral hydrogen gas and star formation rate (SFR) can be used to explore the SFR properties of damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems at higher redshift. We find that while the SFR densities for DLA systems are consistent with luminous star forming galaxies at redshifts below z~0.6, at higher redshifts their SFR density is too low for them to provide a significant contribution to the cosmic star formation history (SFH). This suggests that the majority of DLAs may be a distinct population from the Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or submillimeter star-forming galaxies that together dominate the SFR density at high redshift. It is also possible that the DLAs do not trace the bulk of the neutral gas at high redshift. The metallicity properties of DLAs are consistent with this interpretation. The DLAs show a metal mass density lower by two orders of magnitude at all redshifts than that inferred from the SFH of the universe. These results are consistent with DLAs being dominated by low mass systems having low SFRs or a late onset of star formation, similar to the star formation histories of dwarf galaxies in the local universe.

We present the results of a MgII absorption-line survey using QSO spectra from the SDSS EDR. Over 1,300 doublets with rest equivalent widths greater than 0.3\AA and redshifts $0.366 \le z \le 2.269$ were identified and measured. We find that the $\lambda2796$ rest equivalent width ($W_0^{\lambda2796}$) distribution is described very well by an exponential function $\partial N/\partial W_0^{\lambda2796} = \frac{N^*}{W^*} e^{-\frac{W_0}{W^*}}$, with $N^*=1.187\pm0.052$ and $W^*=0.702\pm0.017$\AA. Previously reported power law fits drastically over-predict the number of strong lines. Extrapolating our exponential fit under-predicts the number of $W_0 \le 0.3$\AA systems, indicating a transition in $dN/dW_0$ near $W_0 \simeq 0.3$\AA. A combination of two exponentials reproduces the observed distribution well, suggesting that MgII absorbers are the superposition of at least two physically distinct populations of absorbing clouds. We also derive a new redshift parameterization for the number density of $W_0^{\lambda2796} \ge 0.3$\AA lines: $N^*=1.001\pm0.132(1+z)^{0.226\pm0.170}$ and $W^*=0.443\pm0.032(1+z)^{0.634\pm 0.097}$\AA. We find that the distribution steepens with decreasing redshift, with $W^*$ decreasing from $0.80\pm0.04$\AA at $z=1.6$ to $0.59\pm0.02$\AA at $z=0.7$. The incidence of moderately strong MgII $\lambda2796$ lines does not show evidence for evolution with redshift. However, lines stronger than $\approx 2$\AA show a decrease relative to the no-evolution prediction with decreasing redshift for $z \lesssim 1$. The evolution is stronger for increasingly stronger lines. Since $W_0$ in saturated absorption lines is an indicator of the velocity spread of the absorbing clouds, we interpret this as an evolution in the kinematic properties of galaxies from moderate to low z.

We present Keck/HIRES abundance measurements and metal-line kinematic profiles of the damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) towards the quasars Q0933+733 (z_abs=1.479) and Q0948+433 (z_abs=1.233). These two DLAs have among the five highest HI column densities at any redshift: N(HI)=4.2E21 cm^{-2}. The metal-line data, presented here for the first time, reveal that these DLAs are noteworthy for several other reasons as well. 1) The Q0933+733 DLA exhibits simple kinematic structure with unusually narrow velocity widths as measured from its unsaturated metal lines (delta v=16 km/s). At 2.6% solar, it has the second lowest metallicity at z -1) and a significant alpha-enhancement. The strong metal lines of this DLA have made possible the detection of TiII1910, CoII2012, and MgI2026. 3) We find that the relative gas-phase abundances of both DLAs follow the general trend seen at high redshift, e.g., enhanced Zn/Fe and Si/Fe, and sub-solar Mn/Fe, indicating that there is little evolution in the nucleosynthetic patterns of DLAs down to this epoch. 4) Their high HI column densities imply that these DLAs dominate the column density-weighted cosmic mean metallicity, , of the universe at z = -0.89^{+0.40}_{-0.33}, where the uncertainties are 95% confidence limits.

We report new imaging and spectroscopic observations of the damped Ly alpha (DLA) galaxy SBS 1543+593, a nearby dwarf galaxy whose stellar disk is intersected by the sightline to the bright background QSO HS 1543+5921. Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations with WFPC2 in the F450W and F702W bands are used to measure the DLA galaxy's properties and compile a catalog of its (candidate) HII regions. Ground-based long-slit spectroscopy of the brightest HII region in the galaxy yields estimates of the star formation rate (SFR) and of chemical abundances in the galaxy's interstellar medium. We find that SBS 1543+593 exhibits a SFR $\approx 0.006 h^{-2}_{70} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, or a SFR per unit area of $\approx 1.4 \times 10^{-4} h^{-2}_{70} M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$. We derive gas-phase abundances in the ionized gas of $12 + \log {\rm (O/H)} = 8.2 \pm 0.2$, which is about 1/3 of the solar value, and $\log {\rm (N/O)} = -1.40^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$. These values are consistent with the morphologial appearance of SBS 1543+593, an Sm dwarf of $M_B -5 \log h_{70} = -16.8\pm0.2$ and of intermediate surface brightness. SBS 1543+593 is the first {\it bona fide} DLA for which abundances have been measured using emission-line diagnostics. When compared with future, high-resolution, ultraviolet spectroscopy, our results should prove key for interpreting abundance determinations in high redshift DLAs.

Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey early data release spectra, we have identified 370 Mg II absorption systems with Mg II λ2796 rest equivalent widths ≥1 A and redshifts z = 0.9-2.2. From our previous and ongoing Hubble Space Telescope UV spectroscopic studies, we estimate that the mean neutral hydrogen column density of a system selected in this manner is N = × 1020 atoms cm-2, which corresponds to the damped Lyα (DLA) regime. We have formed high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectra using 223 of these systems with z = 0.9-2.0 in order to study the strength of the Zn II and Cr II absorption lines corresponding to this mean neutral hydrogen column density. After making a correction for missed DLAs, overall we find that [Zn/H] = -1.13 ± 0.19. We find [Cr/Zn] = -0.45 ± 0.13, which indicates that ≈65% of the Cr is depleted onto grains, but this does not correct for the missed DLAs. We have also derived Zn and Cr abundances in two kinematic regimes, and within each regime we consider two redshift intervals. We find trends that indicate that metallicities are higher in the composites in which the absorption has larger velocity spreads as measured by Mg II λ2796 rest equivalent width. Larger velocity spreads may correspond to deeper gravitational potential wells that represent more massive and chemically evolved structures and/or regions associated with winds from starbursting galaxies, also leading to kinematically broad structures of chemically enriched gas. Within the large velocity spread regime, we find that at lower redshifts the Zn metallicity is larger and more Cr is depleted onto grains.

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV spectroscopy of 12 candidate low-redshift damped Lyα (DLA) systems in 11 quasi-stellar objects (z = 0.103 in Q0054+144, z = 0.969 and z = 0.987 in Q0302-223, z = 0.478 in Q0454-220, z = 1.476 in Q1047+550, z = 1.070 in Q1206+459, z = 1.228 in Q1247+267, z = 0.399 in Q1318+290B, z = 0.519 in Q1329+412, z = 0.276 in Q1451-375, z = 0.204 in Q2112+059, z = 0.263 in Q2251+113) are presented; the observations demonstrate that they are not DLAs with N ≥ 2 × 1020 atoms cm-2. In all cases except two, the systems either do not exist or are well below the DLA threshold column density; the exceptions are a z = 0.474 system in Q0454-220 that has N = 3 × 1019 atoms cm-2 and a z = 1.223 system in Q1247+267 that has N = 8 × 1019 atoms cm-2. Thus, observations of these objects in the Chandra, Gemini, and HST archives are not suitable for doing follow-up work on low-redshift DLAs. Furthermore, these results indicate that the low-redshift DLA statistics derived from International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra and presented by Lanzetta, Wolfe, & Turnshek and Wolfe et al. in 1995 are invalid.

We report the results of HST WFPC2 broadband F555W and F702W photometric and F555W polarimetric observations of the "Cloverleaf" QSO H1413+1143. This is a four-component gravitationally-lensed broad absorption line (BAL) QSO. Observations were obtained at two epochs in March 1999 and June 1999 separated by about 100 days. The goal of our program was to detect any relative changes among the components and between the two epochs. Over this time baseline we detected an approximately 0.07 mag dimming in component D of the lensed image, which we interpret as evidence for microlensing. In March 1999 we find significant evidence for a difference in the relative linear polarization of component D in comparison to the other three components; in June 1999 the combined polarization of the Cloverleaf components was lower. In March 1999 the apparently microlensed component D has a rotated polarization position angle and a somewhat higher degree of polarization than the other three components. We suggest that this difference in polarization is due to microlensing magnification of part of a scattered-light (i.e. polarized) continuum-producing region. The results indicate that in the Cloverleaf the size-scale of the polarized scattered-light region exceeds about 10^{16} cm but lies interior to the region producing the broad emission lines (< 10^{18} cm)., 21 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

New optical and infrared observations along the sight-line toward the quasar OI 363 (0738+313) are presented and discussed. Excluding systems which lack confirming UV spectroscopic observations of the actual Lyman alpha line, this sight-line presently contains the two lowest-redshift classical damped Lyman alpha (DLA) quasar absorption line systems known (i.e. with N(HI) \ge 2 x 10^{20} atoms cm^{-2}), one at z(abs)=0.0912 and the other at z(abs)=0.2212. The z=0.09 DLA galaxy appears to be an extended low surface brightness galaxy which is easily visible only in infrared images and shows rich morphological structure. We report results on the incidence and cosmological mass density of damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems at redshifts less that 1.65. We used HST and an efficient non-traditional (but unbiased) survey technique to discover DLA systems at redshifts z0.6A. (2) The incidence of DLA systems per unit redshift, n(DLA), is observed to decrease with decreasing redshift. (3) On the other hand, the cosmological mass density of neutral gas in low-redshift DLA absorbers, Omega(DLA), is observed to be comparable to that observed at high redshift. (4) The low-redshift DLA absorbers exhibit a significantly larger fraction of very high column density systems in comparison to determinations at both high redshift and locally., 47 pages in LaTeX - emulateapj style with included tables and encapsulated postscript figures. We report the discovery of two low redshift HI 21cm absorbers, one at z = 0.2212 towards the z_{em} = 0.630 quasar OI 363 (B0738+313), and the other at z = 0.3127 towards PKS B1127-145 (z_{em} = 1.187). Both were found during a survey of MgII selected systems at redshifts 0.2 < z < 1 using the new UHF-high system at the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). New HST/FOS observations also identify both systems as damped Ly-alpha (DLa) absorbers. By comparing the column density from the DLa line with that from the HI 21cm line, we calculate the spin temperature, and find that T_s is approximately 1000 K for both of these low redshift absorbers. We briefly discuss some implications of this result.

The discovery of a zabs=0.0912 damped Lyα absorption-line system in the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph ultraviolet spectrum of the quasar OI 363 (0738+313) is reported. This is the lowest redshift quasar-damped Lyα system known. Its neutral hydrogen column density is N(H I) =1.5 ± 0.2 × 1021 atoms cm-2, which easily exceeds the classical criterion for damped Lyα of N(H I) ≥2 × 1020 atoms cm-2. Remarkably, a zabs=0.2212 damped system with N(H I) =7.9 ± 1.4 × 1020 atoms cm-2 has also been discovered in the same spectrum. In the past, the standard paradigm for damped Lyα systems has been that they arise in galactic or protogalactic H I disks with low impact parameters in luminous galaxies. However, WIYN imaging of the OI 363 field shows that none of the galaxies visible in the vicinity of the quasar is a luminous gas-rich spiral with low impact parameter, either at z=0.0912 or z=0.2212. Thus, these damped systems are among the clearest examples yet of cases that are inconsistent with the standard damped Lyα-H I-disk paradigm.

PUBLISHED, An analysis of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC) and Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images of the gravitationally lensed Cloverleaf broad absorption line quasi-stellar object (QSO) H1413+1143 is presented. Astrometric and photometric measurements are derived for the four components of the lensed QSO for five different epochs over a baseline of 2.76 yr. Because of the replacement of WFPC with WFPC2 and the change in the purpose of the observation at the various epochs, the data were not always taken with the same filter. With the exception of the declination of component D, the relative positions of the four components are measured to within ~3 mas; these results are consistent with but considerably more accurate than earlier measurements. The relative photometric measurements at any one epoch are typically accurate to ~0.02--0.03 mag (1 sigma ). The initial HST WFPC images cover a baseline of 1.26 yr (1992.21--1993.47 [1992 March 16--1993 June 22]), and over this time interval there is little evidence for brightness variations of any of the components relative to one another at levels >0.06 mag (>2 sigma ). Photometric measurements of the more accurate WFPC2 data obtained with different filters extends this baseline an additional 1.50 yr (to 1994.97 [1994 December 22]). The WFPC2 data also fail to reveal significant brightness variations among the components. In addition, the WFPC2 data include both UV (F336W) and near-infrared (F814W) images. These color data indicate the presence of sight-line--dependent extinction, causing the F336W--F814W color index of component B (the most reddened component) to be 0.56 +/- 0.04 mag redder than that of component C (the least reddened component). The lack of evidence for significant component brightness variations at all HST observation epochs suggests that the data could be reliably extinction-corrected to derive the relative amplifications of the four image components. This is done for several reasonable dust-extinction models. Thus, the derived astrometry along with the photometric analysis set clear constraints on models for the Cloverleaf. Since component D shows some evidence for microlensing, the results on its relative amplification should be used with caution. While existing models can successfully reproduce the relative positions, the relative amplifications have not yet been successfully modeled. The WFPC2 imaging data has also permitted a sensitive search for component structure and the gravitational lens itself. There is marginal evidence for elongated structure between components A and C that may be part of an Einstein ring. However, no significant evidence for the lensing object is found. The various measurements are quantified in ways useful for setting model constraints. Limits on the mass-to-light ratio and detectability of the lensing galaxy are also discussed.

We present HST-COS spectra of ten quasars located behind M31, selected to investigate the properties of gas associated with its extended disk and high velocity clouds (HVCs). The sightlines have impact parameters ranging between b= 13 kpc and 112 kpc. No absorption is detected in the four sightlines beyond b=57 kpc. We present a catalog of intervening MgII quasar absorption-line systems in the redshift interval 0.36 17,000 measured MgII doublets. We also present data on the ~44,600 quasar spectra which were searched to construct the catalog, including redshift and magnitude information, continuum-normalized spectra, and corresponding arrays of redshift-dependent minimum rest equivalent widths detectable at our confidence threshold. The catalog is available on the web. A careful second search of 500 random spectra indicated that, for every 100 spectra searched, approximately one significant MgII system was accidentally rejected. Current plans to expand the catalog beyond DR4 quasars are discussed. Many MgII absorbers are known to be associated with galaxies. Therefore, the combination of large size and well understood statistics makes this catalog ideal for precision studies of the low-ionization and neutral gas regions associated with galaxies at low to moderate redshift. We present observations of CaII, ZnII, and CrII absorption lines in 16 DLAs and 6 subDLAs at 0.6 < z < 1.3, obtained for the dual purposes of: (i) clarifying the relationship between DLAs and absorbers selected via strong CaII lines, and (ii) increasing the still limited sample of Zn and Cr abundances in this redshift range. We find only partial overlap between current samples of intermediate-z DLAs (which are drawn from magnitude limited surveys) and strong CaII absorbers: approximately 25% of known DLAs at these redshifts have an associated CaII 3935 line with REW>0.35A, the threshold of the SDSS sample assembled by Wild and her collaborators. The lack of the strongest systems (with REW>0.5A) is consistent with these authors' conclusion that such absorbers are often missed in current DLA surveys because they redden/dim the light of the background QSOs. We rule out the suggestion that strong CaII absorption is associated exclusively with the highest-N(HI) DLAs. Furthermore, we find no correlation between the strength of the CaII lines and either the metallicity or depletion, although the strongest CaII absorber in our sample is also the most metal-rich DLA yet discovered, with [Zn/H] ~ solar. We conclude that a complex mix of parameters determine the strengths of the CaII lines, including the density of particles and UV photons in the ISM of the galaxies hosting the DLAs. We find tentative evidence (given the small size of our sample) that strong CaII systems may preferentially sample regions of high gas density, perhaps akin to the DLAs exhibiting molecular hydrogen absorption at redshifts z>2. If this connection is confirmed, strong CaII absorbers would trace possibly metal-rich, H2-bearing columns of cool, dense gas at distances up to tens of kpc from normal galaxies. Using a sample of almost 7000 strong MgII absorbers with 0.4 < z < 2.2 detected in the SDSS DR4 dataset, we investigate the gravitational lensing and dust extinction effects they induce on background quasars. After carefully quantifying several selection biases, we isolate the reddening effects as a function of redshift and absorber rest equivalent width, W_0. We find the amount of dust to increase with cosmic time as (1+z)^(-1.1 +/- 0.4), following the evolution of cosmic star density or integrated star formation rate. We measure the reddening effects over a factor 30 in E(B-V) and we find the dust column density to be proportional to W_0^(1.9 +/- 0.2), which provides an important scaling for theoretical modeling of metal absorbers. We also measure the dust-to-metals ratio and find it similar to that of the Milky Way. In contrast to previous studies, we do not detect any gravitational magnification by MgII systems. The damped Lyman-α absorption-line systems (DLAs) that are observed in quasar spectra arise in neutral-gas-rich regions of intervening galaxies. With the highest neutral hydrogen column densities observed (N(HI) ⩾ 2 × 1020 atoms cm−2), they are known to trace the bulk of the neutral gas content of the Universe, and are thus powerful probes of galaxy formation and evolution. However, DLAs are extremely rare, and since the Lyman-α line falls in the UV for redshifts z < 1.65, not many are known at low redshift due to the limited availability of space data. Our HST surveys for DLAs in strong MgII absorbers have been successful at showing that MgII can be used as an unbiased tracer of DLAs. We present new results on their incidence, or redshift number density, dn/dz, and cosmological neutral gas mass density, ΩDLA, at redshifts 0.11 ⩽ z ⩽ 1.65, and incorporate results from higher and lower redshift studies in the literature to derive the evolution of neutral gas in the Universe.

We describe a new method of combining optical and infrared photometry to select Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) at redshifts $z > 0.6$. We explore this technique using a combination of optical photometry from CFHTLS and HST, infrared photometry from the WISE satellite, and spectroscopic or photometric redshifts from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey or COSMOS. We present a variety of methods for testing the success of our selection, and present methods for optimization given a set of rest-frame color and redshift requirements. We have tested this selection in two different regions of the sky, the COSMOS and Extended Groth Strip (EGS) fields, to reduce the effect of cosmic/sample variance. We have used these methods to assemble large samples of LRGs for two different ancillary programs as a part of the SDSS-III/ BOSS spectroscopic survey. This technique is now being used to select $\sim$600,000 LRG targets for SDSS-IV/eBOSS, which began observations in Fall 2014, and will be adapted for the proposed DESI survey. We have found these methods can select high-redshift LRGs efficiently with minimal stellar contamination; this is extremely difficult to achieve with selections that rely on optical photometry alone., 10 pages, 13 figures, Published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present r'- or i'-band WIYN images of the fields of 15 Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasars that have spectra exhibiting intervening MgII absorption-line systems with rest equivalent widths 2.7A \le REW \le 6.0A and redshifts 0.42 < z_{abs} < 0.84. Such systems are rare and exhibit projected absorption velocity spreads in excess of \approx 300-650 km/s. Approximately 60% are expected to be damped Ly��systems. In each of our fields we detect at least one galaxy that, if at the absorption redshift, would have impact parameter b \lesssim 40 kpc and luminosity L \gtrsim 0.3 L*. We measure a significant excess of galaxies at low-b to the sightlines over a large range of luminosity. Many of the sightlines are found to pass either through or close to the optically-luminous extent of a galaxy. Considering the very large velocity spreads seen in absorption, this suggests that these absorbing regions are more kinematically complex than local spirals such as the Milky Way. Our data indicate that interactions and galaxy pairs may be a contributing factor to the production of such large velocity spreads. Finally, we also find evidence that a population of galaxies with luminosities in the range 4L* \lesssim L \lesssim 13 L* may contribute to the presence of ultra-strong MgII absorption. We present the results from a spectroscopic survey for intervening MgII absorption in the spectra of 381 background QSOs conducted at the Multiple Mirror Telescope. This survey complements our earlier SDSS EDR MgII survey, extending our results to lower redshift ($z \simeq 0.15$) and weaker MgII $\lambda2796$ rest equivalent width ($W_0^{\lambda2796} \simeq 0.1$\AA). We confirm two major results from that survey: the transition in the $W_0^{\lambda2796}$ distribution at $W_0^{\lambda2796} \approx 0.3$\AA, and the $W_0^{\lambda2796}$-dependent evolution of the incidence of systems. The nature of $\partial^2N/\partial z \partial W_0^{\lambda2796}$ is consistent with the idea that multiple physically-distinct components/processes contribute to the incidence of MgII absorption systems in a $W_0$-dependent manner and evolve at different rates. A significant decrease in the total proper absorption cross section is detected in our MMT data for systems as weak as 1.0 \AA $\le W_0^{\lambda2796} < 1.5$\AA at $z\lesssim 0.4$. We discuss this $W_0$-dependent evolution in the context of the evolution of galaxy structures, processes including superwinds and interactions, and damped-Ly$\alpha$ absorbers. We find evidence for dust in the intervening QSO absorbers from the spectra of QSOs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1. No evidence is found for the 2175 A feature which is present in the Milky Way dust extinction curve. The extinction curve resembles the SMC extinction curve. We report the discovery of two damped Ly-alpha absorption-line systems (DLAs) near redshift z=1 along a single quasar sightline (Q1727+5302) with neutral hydrogen column densities of N(HI) = (1.45\pm0.15)\times10^{21} and (2.60\pm0.20)\times10^{21} atoms/cm2. Their sightline velocity difference of 13,000 km/s corresponds to a proper separation of 106h_{70}^{-1} Mpc if interpreted as the Hubble flow (Omega_m=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7). The random probability of such an occurrence is significantly less than 3%. With follow-up spectroscopy, we find [Zn/H] = -0.58\pm0.15 (26.5% solar) and -1.32\pm0.28 (4.7% solar), respectively, and [Cr/H] = -1.26\pm0.15 (5.5% solar) and -1.77\pm0.28 (1.7% solar), respectively, which is evidence for depletion onto grains. Follow-up IR images show the two most likely DLA galaxy candidates to have impact parameters of 22h_{70}^{-1} kpc and 32h_{70}^{-1} kpc if near z=1. They are significantly underluminous relative to the galaxy population at z=1. To investigate the possibility of additional high-N(HI) absorbers we have searched the SDSS database for z>1 quasars within 30 arcmin of the original sightline. Five were found, and two show strong MgII-FeII absorption near z=1, consistent with classical DLA absorption approx 37% of the time, but almost always N(HI) > 10^{19} atoms/cm2. Consequently, this rare configuration of four high-N(HI) absorbers with a total sightline velocity extent of 30,600 km/s may represent a large filament-like structure stretching over a proper distance of 241h_{70}^{-1} Mpc along our sightline, and a region in space capable of harboring excessive amounts of neutral gas. Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO) ACIS-S spectra of three quasars which lie behind three foreground damped Lyman alpha (DLA) absorbers are analyzed in order to attempt to determine the amount of photoelectric absorption due to metals present in their x-ray spectra. These absorbers are the three largest neutral hydrogen column density absorption-line systems known at low redshift (0.313 \le z_abs \le 0.524). They have HI column densities which lie between 3E21 and 5E21 atoms/cm^2. At these redshifts the amount of photoelectric absorption at x-ray energies is primarily an indicator of the oxygen abundance. Since the column densities of these systems are so high, one would expect accurate metallicity measurements of them to yield a robust estimate of the column-density-weighted cosmic neutral-gas-phase metallicity at z \approx 0.4. We consider cases where the DLA gas has solar element abundance ratios and ones with the alpha-group element abundance ratios enhanced. For the adopted assumptions, the column-density-weighted cosmic neutral-gas-phase metallicity of the non-enhanced elements (e.g. Zn) at z \approx 0.4 likely lies in the range \approx 0.04-0.38 Z_solar., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. We present optical and near-infrared ground-based imaging results on four low-redshift damped Ly-alpha (DLA) galaxies. The corresponding DLA systems were discovered in our HST spectroscopic surveys for DLA lines in known strong MgII absorption-line systems toward the quasars B2 0827+243 (z{DLA}=0.525), PKS 0952+179 (z{DLA}=0.239), PKS 1127-145 (z{DLA}=0.313), and PKS 1629+120 (z{DLA}=0.532). The DLA galaxies span a mixture of morphological types from patchy, irregular, and low surface brightness to spiral galaxies. The luminosities range from 0.02L_K* to 1.2L_K*. We also discovered several extremely red objects (EROs) in two of these fields and discuss the possibility that they are associated with the DLA galaxies. These observations add to the small but growing list of DLA galaxies at low redshift. We present results on the properties and evolution of moderately ionized gas in the Universe based on intervening CIV absorption-line systems. We have compiled a database of CIV systems from the SDSS, and we find evidence for evolution in the incidence of CIV absorbers.

We give references to some of our work on the properties and evolution of the neutral gas component of the Universe (see reference list). The bulk of the observed neutral gas has been detected by identifying intervening damped Lyα (DLA) quasar absorption-line systems with N(H) ≥2 × 1020 atoms cm−2. We also present some initial results from a program to identify DLA absorbers near redshift z = 0.5 using Hubble Space Telescope ACS prism spectra (see Figure 1).

The evolution of the neutral hydrogen content of galaxies as a function of time is an important constraint on processes in galactic evolution. We present a comprehensive, statistical description of the H I content and distribution within galaxies at the present epoch and compare these statistics with the properties of H I associated with damped Lyman-α absorption systems at high redshift that are observed in the spectra of QSOs. Ω HI (z=0), the H I mass density at the present epoch relative to the present critical mass density, is found to be (2.5±0.6)×10 -4 h 75 -1 , consistent with the decreasing trend of the H I content with time deduced from QSO absorption line statistics for redshifts from about 4 to 0.5 (Lanzetta 1993)
