We present a Bayesian inference on the neutral hydrogen fraction of the intergalactic medium (IGM), $\overline{x}_{\small HI}$, at z ∼ 6–8 using the properties of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) during the epoch of reionization. We use large samples of LBG candidates at 5.5 ≤ z ≤ 8.2 with spectroscopy from Keck/DEIMOS and Keck/MOSFIRE. For each galaxy, we incorporate either the Lyman-α (Lyα) equivalent width (EW) for detections or the EW limit spectrum for non-detections to parametrize the EW distribution at various ultraviolet brightnesses for a given redshift. Using our reference sample of galaxy candidates from the ionized universe at z ∼ 6.0, we are able to infer $\overline{x}_{\small HI}$ at two redshifts: z ∼ 6.7 and z ∼ 7.6. This work includes intrinsically faint, gravitationally lensed galaxies at z ∼ 6.0 in order to constrain the intrinsic faint-end Lyα EW distribution and provide a comparable population of galaxies to counterparts in our sample that are at higher redshift. The inclusion of faint galaxy candidates, in addition to a more sophisticated modelling framework, allows us to better isolate effects of the interstellar medium and circumgalactic medium on the observed Lyα distribution from those of the IGM. We infer an upper limit of $\overline{x}_{\small HI}$ ≤ 0.25 (0.44) at z = 6.7 ± 0.2 and a neutral fraction of $\overline{x}_{\small HI}$ = $0.83^{+0.08}_{-0.11}$ (0.83$^{+0.11}_{-0.21}$) at z = 7.6 ± 0.6, both within 68 per cent (95 per cent) uncertainty, results that favour a moderately late and fairly rapid reionization.

We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emitter (LAE) at $z=3.2177\pm0.0001$ in VLT/MUSE data. The galaxy is strongly lensed by the galaxy cluster RXC~J0018.5+1626 recently observed in the RELICS survey, and the double-peaked Ly$\alpha$ emission is clearly detected in the two counter images in the MUSE field-of-view. We measure a relatively high Ly$\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width (EW) of $\mathrm{EW}_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha,0}=(63\pm2)\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$. Additional near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy allows us to measure the H$\beta$, [OIII]$\lambda4959\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ emission lines, which show moderate rest-frame EWs of the order of a few $\sim10-100\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$, an [OIII]$\lambda5007\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$/H$\beta$ ratio of $4.8\pm0.7$, and a lower limit on the [OIII]/[OII] ratio of $>5.6$. The galaxy has very blue UV-continuum slopes of $\beta_{\mathrm{FUV}}=-2.23\pm0.06$ and $\beta_{\mathrm{NUV}}=-3.0\pm0.2$, and is magnified by factors $\mu\sim7-10$ in each of the two images, thus enabling a view into a low-mass ($M_{\star}\simeq10^{7.5}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) high-redshift galaxy analog. Notably, the blue peak of the Ly$\alpha$ profile is significantly stronger than the red peak, which suggests an inflow of matter and possibly very low HI column densities in its circumgalactic gas. Combined with the high lensing magnification and image multiplicity, these properties make this galaxy a prime candidate for follow-up observations to search for LyC emission and constrain the LyC photon escape fraction., Comment: Updated to match published version

We study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes (β) of galaxies at redshifts 8 < z < 16 (〈z〉 = 10), using a combination of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) ERO and ERS NIRCam imaging and ground-based near-infrared imaging of the COSMOS field. The combination of JWST and ground-based imaging provides a wide baseline in both redshift and absolute UV magnitude (−22.6 < MUV < −17.9), sufficient to allow a meaningful comparison to previous results at lower redshift. Using a power-law fitting technique, we find that our full sample (median MUV = −19.3 ± 1.3) returns an inverse-variance weighted mean value of 〈β〉 = −2.10 ± 0.05, with a corresponding median value of β = −2.29 ± 0.09. These values imply that the UV colours of galaxies at z > 8 are, on average, no bluer than the bluest galaxies in the local Universe (e.g., NGC 1705; β = −2.46). We find evidence for a β − MUV relation, such that brighter UV galaxies display redder UV slopes (⁠dβ/dMUV=−0.17±0.05⁠). Comparing to results at lower redshift, we find that the slope of our β − MUV relation is consistent with the slope observed at z ≃ 5 and that, at a given MUV, our 8 < z < 16 galaxies are bluer than their z ≃ 5 counterparts, with an inverse-variance weighted mean offset of 〈Δβ〉 = −0.38 ± 0.09. We do not find strong evidence that any objects in our sample display ultra-blue UV continuum slopes (i.e., β ≲ −3) that would require their UV emission to be dominated by ultra-young, dust-free stellar populations with high Lyman-continuum escape fractions. Comparing our results to the predictions of theoretical galaxy formation models, we find that the galaxies in our sample are consistent with the young, metal-poor and moderately dust-reddened galaxies expected at z > 8.

Enhanced ionizing radiation in close proximity to redshift $z\gtrsim 6$ quasars creates short windows of intergalactic Ly$\alpha$ transmission blueward of the quasar Ly$\alpha$ emission lines. The majority of these Ly$\alpha$ near-zones are consistent with quasars that have optically/UV bright lifetimes of $t_{\rm Q}\sim 10^{5}-10^{7}\rm\,yr$. However, lifetimes as short as $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{4}\rm\,yr$ appear to be required by the smallest Ly$\alpha$ near-zones. These short lifetimes present an apparent challenge for the growth of $\sim 10^{9}\rm\,M_{\odot}$ black holes at $z\gtrsim 6$. Accretion over longer timescales is only possible if black holes grow primarily in an obscured phase, or if the quasars are variable on timescales comparable to the equilibriation time for ionized hydrogen. Distinguishing between very young quasars and older quasars that have experienced episodic accretion with Ly$\alpha$ absorption alone is challenging, however. We therefore predict the signature of proximate 21-cm absorption around $z\gtrsim 6$ radio-loud quasars. For modest pre-heating of intergalactic hydrogen by the X-ray background, where the spin temperature $T_{\rm S} \lesssim 10^{2}\rm\,K$ prior to any quasar heating, we find proximate 21-cm absorption should be observable in the spectra of radio-loud quasars. The extent of the proximate 21-cm absorption is sensitive to the integrated lifetime of the quasar. Evidence for proximate 21-cm absorption from the diffuse intergalactic medium within $2-3\rm\,pMpc$ of a (radio-loud) quasar would be consistent with a short quasar lifetime, $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{5}\rm\,yr$, and would provide a complementary constraint on models for high redshift black hole growth., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) forming in the early universe are thought to be the primary source of hard ionizing photons contributing to the reionization of intergalactic helium. However, the number density and spectral properties of high-redshift AGN remain largely unconstrained. In this work, we make use of physically-informed models calibrated with a wide variety of available observations to provide estimates for the role of AGN throughout the Epoch of Reionization. We present AGN luminosity functions in various bands between z = 2 to 7 predicted by the well-established Santa Cruz semi-analytic model, which includes modelling of black hole accretion and AGN feedback. We then combine the predicted AGN populations with a physical spectral model for self-consistent estimates of ionizing photon production rates, which depend on the mass and accretion rate of the accreting supermassive black hole. We then couple the predicted comoving ionizing emissivity with an analytic model to compute the subsequent reionization history of intergalactic helium and hydrogen. This work demonstrates the potential of coupling physically motivated analytic or semi-analytic techniques to capture multi-scale physical processes across a vast range of scales (here, from AGN accretion disks to cosmological scales). Our physical model predicts an intrinsic ionizing photon budget well above many of the estimates in the literature, meaning that helium reionization can comfortably be accomplished even with a relatively low escape fraction. We present the first results from the X-SHOOTER Lyman-$\alpha$ survey at $z=2$ (XLS-$z2$). XLS-$z2$ is a deep spectroscopic survey of 35 Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) utilising $\approx90$ hours of exposure time with VLT/X-SHOOTER and covers rest-frame Ly$\alpha$ to H$\alpha$ emission with R$\approx4000$. We present the sample selection, the observations and the data reduction. Systemic redshifts are measured from rest-frame optical lines for 33/35 sources. In the stacked spectrum, our LAEs are characterised by an interstellar medium with little dust, a low metallicity and a high ionisation state. The ionising sources are young hot stars that power strong emission-lines in the optical and high ionisation lines in the UV. The LAEs exhibit clumpy UV morphologies and have outflowing kinematics with blue-shifted SiII absorption, a broad [OIII] component and a red-skewed Ly$\alpha$ line. Typically 30 % of the Ly$\alpha$ photons escape, of which one quarter on the blue side of the systemic velocity. A fraction of Ly$\alpha$ photons escapes directly at the systemic suggesting clear channels enabling a $\approx10$ % escape of ionising photons, consistent with an inference based on MgII. A combination of a low effective HI column density, a low dust content and young star-burst determine whether a star forming galaxy is observed as a LAE. The first is possibly related to outflows and/or a fortunate viewing angle, while we find that the latter two in LAEs are typical for their stellar mass of 10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Main text 26 pages. The transmission of Lyman-{\alpha} (Ly{\alpha}) in the spectra of distant quasars depends on the density, temperature, and ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Therefore, high-redshift (z > 5) Ly{\alpha} forests could be invaluable in studying the late stages of the epoch of reionization (EoR), as well as properties of the sources that drive it. Indeed, high-quality quasar spectra have now firmly established the existence of large-scale opacity fluctuations at z > 5, whose physical origins are still debated. Here we introduce a Bayesian framework capable of constraining the EoR and galaxy properties by forward-modelling the high-z Ly{\alpha} forest. Using priors from galaxy and CMB observations, we demonstrate that the final overlap stages of the EoR (when >95% of the volume was ionized) should occur at z < 5.6, in order to reproduce the large-scale opacity fluctuations seen in forest spectra. However, it is the combination of patchy reionization and the inhomogeneous UV background that produces the longest Gunn-Peterson troughs. Ly{\alpha} forest observations tighten existing constraints on the characteristic ionizing escape fraction of galaxies, with the combined observations suggesting f_{\rm esc} \approx 7^4_3%, and disfavoring a strong evolution with the galaxy's halo (or stellar) mass., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS, comments are welcome

The detection of the 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is challenging due to bright foreground sources, radio frequency interference (RFI), the ionosphere, and instrumental effects. Even after correcting for these effects in the calibration step and applying foreground removal techniques, the remaining residuals in the observed 21 cm power spectra are still above the thermal noise, which is referred to as the "excess variance." We study potential causes of this excess variance based on 13 nights of data obtained with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR). We focused on the impact of gain errors, the sky model, and ionospheric effects on the excess variance by correlating the relevant parameters such as the gain variance over time or frequency, local sidereal time (LST), diffractive scale, and phase structure-function slope with the level of excess variance. Our analysis shows that excess variance has an LST dependence, which is related to the power from the sky. And the simulated Stokes I power spectra from bright sources and the excess variance show a similar progression over LST with the minimum power appearing at LST bin 6h to 9h. This LST dependence is also present in sky images of the residual Stokes I of the observations. In very-wide sky images, we demonstrate that the extra power comes exactly from the direction of bright and distant sources Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A with the array beam patterns. These results suggest that the level of excess variance in the 21 cm signal power spectra is related to sky effects and, hence, it depends on LST. In particular, very bright and distant sources such as Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A can dominate the effect. Properties of the first generation of stars [referred to as the Population III (Pop III) stars], such as their initial mass function (IMF), are poorly constrained by observations and have yet to converge between simulations. The cosmological 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen is predicted to be sensitive to Lyman-band photons produced by these stars, thus providing a unique way to probe the first stellar population. In this paper, we investigate the impacts of the Pop III IMF on the cosmic-dawn 21-cm signal via the Wouthuysen-Field effect, Lyman-Werner feedback, Ly alpha heating, and cosmic microwave background heating. We calculate the emission spectra of star-forming haloes for different IMFs by integrating over individual metal-free stellar spectra, computed from a set of stellar evolution histories and stellar atmospheres, and taking into account variability of the spectra with stellar age. Through this study, we therefore relax two common assumptions: that the zero-age main-sequence emission rate of a Pop III star is representative of its lifetime mean emission rate, and that Pop III emission can be treated as instantaneous. Exploring bottom-heavy, top-heavy, and intermediate IMFs, we show that variations in the 21-cm signal are driven by stars lighter than 20 M-circle dot. For the explored models, we find maximum relative differences of 59 per cent in the cosmic-dawn global 21-cm signal, and 131 per cent between power spectra. The cosmic ionizing emissivity from star-forming galaxies has long been anchored to UV luminosity functions. Here, we introduce an emissivity framework based on Lyα emitters (LAEs), which naturally hones in on the subset of galaxies responsible for the ionizing background due to the intimate connection between production and escape of Lyα and LyC photons. Using constraints on the escape fractions of bright LAEs (LLyα > 0.2L*) at z ≈ 2 obtained from resolved Lyα profiles, and arguing for their redshift-invariance, we show that: (i) quasars and LAEs together reproduce the relatively flat emissivity at z ≈ 2–6, which is non-trivial given the strong evolution in both the star formation density and quasar number density at these epochs and (ii) LAEs produce late and rapid reionization between z ≈ 6−9 under plausible assumptions. Within this framework, the >10 × rise in the UV population-averaged fesc between z ≈ 3–7 naturally arises due to the same phenomena that drive the growing LAE fraction with redshift. Generally, a LAE dominated emissivity yields a peak in the distribution of the ionizing budget with UV luminosity as reported in latest simulations. Using our adopted parameters ($f_{\rm {esc}}=50{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, ξion = 1025.9 Hz erg−1 for half the bright LAEs), a highly ionizing minority of galaxies with MUV < −17 accounts for the entire ionizing budget from star-forming galaxies. Rapid flashes of LyC from such rare galaxies produce a ‘disco’ ionizing background. We conclude proposing tests to further develop our suggested Lyα-anchored formalism.

Aims: Contamination from bright diffuse Galactic thermal and non-thermal radio emission poses crucial challenges in experiments aiming to measure the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization. If not included in calibration, this diffuse emission can severely impact the analysis and signal extraction in 21-cm experiments. We examine large-scale diffuse Galactic emission at 122~MHz, around the North Celestial Pole, using the AARTFAAC-HBA system. Methods: In this pilot project, we present the first-ever wide-field image produced with a single sub-band of the data recorded with the AARTFAAC-HBA. We demonstrate two methods: multiscale CLEAN and shapelet decomposition, to model the diffuse emission revealed in the image. We use angular power spectrum metrics to quantify different components of the emission and compare the performance of the two diffuse structure modelling approaches. Results: We observe that the point sources dominate the angular power spectrum ($\ell(\ell+1)C_{\ell}/2\pi\equiv \Delta^2(\ell)$) of the emission in the field on scales $\ell\gtrsim 60$ ($\lesssim 3$~degree). The angular power spectrum after subtraction of compact sources is flat within $20\lesssim \ell \lesssim200$ range, suggesting that the residual power is dominated by the diffuse emission on scales $\ell\lesssim200$. The residual diffuse emission has a brightness temperature variance of $\Delta^2_{\ell=180} = (145.64 \pm 13.61)~{\rm K}^2$ at 122~MHz on angular scales of 1~degree, and is consistent with a power-law following $C_{\ell}\propto \ell^{-2.0}$ in $20\lesssim \ell \lesssim200$ range. We also find that, in the current setup, the multiscale CLEAN is suitable to model the compact and diffuse structures on a wide range of angular scales, whereas the shapelet decomposition method better models the large scales, which are of the order of a few degrees and wider., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted (A&A)

We use the SPHINX suite of high-resolution cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations to study how spatially and temporally inhomogeneous reionization impacts the baryonic content of dwarf galaxies and cosmic filaments. The SPHINX simulations simultaneously model an inhomogeneous reionization, follow the escape of ionising radiation from thousands of galaxies, and resolve haloes well below the atomic cooling threshold. This makes them an ideal tool for examining how reionization impacts star formation and the gas content of dwarf galaxies. We compare simulations with and without stellar radiation to isolate the effects of radiation feedback from that of supernova, cosmic expansion, and numerical resolution. We find that the gas content of cosmic filaments can be reduced by more than 80% following reionization. The gas inflow rates into haloes with $M_{vir}3$ at fixed mass. Finally, although the gas content of high-redshift dwarf galaxies is significantly impacted by reionization, we find that most haloes with $M_{vir}, 21 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS Accepted

Context. Detecting the 21 cm signal from the epoch of reionisation (EoR) has been highly challenging due to the strong astrophysical foregrounds, ionospheric effects, radio frequency interference (RFI), and instrumental effects. Better characterisation of their effects and precise calibration are, therefore, crucial for the 21 cm EoR signal detection. Aims. In this work we introduce a newly developed direction-dependent calibration algorithm called DDECAL, and compare its performance with an existing direction-dependent calibration algorithm called SAGECAL, in the context of the LOFAR-EoR 21 cm power spectrum experiment. Methods. We process one night of data from LOFAR observed by the HBA system. The observing frequency ranges between 114 and 127 MHz, corresponding to the redshift from 11.5 and 10.2. The north celestial pole (NCP) and its flanking fields were observed simultaneously in this data set. We analyse the NCP and one of the flanking fields. While the NCP field is calibrated by the standard LOFAR-EoR processing pipeline, using SAGECAL for the direction-dependent calibration with an extensive sky model and 122 directions, for the RA 18h flanking field, DDECAL and SAGECAL are used with a relatively simple sky model and 22 directions. Additionally, two different strategies are used for the subtraction of the very bright and far sources Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A. Results. The resulting estimated 21 cm power spectra show that DDECAL performs better at subtracting sources in the primary beam region, due to the application of a beam model, while SAGECAL performs better at subtracting Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A. The analysis shows that including a beam model during the direction-dependent calibration process significantly improves its overall performance. The benefit is obvious in the primary beam region. We also compare the 21 cm power spectra results on two different fields. The results show that the RA 18h flanking field produces better upper limits compared to the NCP for this particular observation. Conclusions. Despite the minor differences between DDECAL and SAGECAL, due to the beam application, we find that the two algorithms yield comparable 21 cm power spectra on the LOFAR-EoR data after foreground removal. Hence, the current LOFAR-EoR 21 cm power spectrum limits are not likely to depend on the direction-dependent calibration method. For this particular observation, the RA 18h flanking field seems to produce improved upper limits (~30%) compared to the NCP.

Interferometry of the cosmic 21-cm signal is set to revolutionise our understanding of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) and the Cosmic Dawn (CD). The culmination of ongoing efforts will be the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will provide tomography of the 21-cm signal from the first billion years of our Universe. Using a galaxy formation model informed by high-$z$ luminosity functions, here we forecast the accuracy with which the first phase of SKA-low (SKA1-low) can constrain the properties of the unseen galaxies driving the astrophysics of the EoR and CD. We consider three observing strategies: (i) deep (1000h on a single field); (ii) medium-deep (100hr on 10 independent fields); and (iii) shallow (10hr on 100 independent fields). Using the 21-cm power spectrum as a summary statistic, and conservatively only using the 21-cm signal above the foreground wedge, we predict that all three observing strategies should recover astrophysical parameters to a fractional precision of $\sim 0.1$ -- 10 per cent. The reionisation history is recovered to an uncertainty of $\Delta z \lesssim 0.1$ (1$\sigma$) for the bulk of its duration. The medium-deep strategy, balancing thermal noise against cosmic variance, results in the tightest constraints, slightly outperforming the deep strategy. The shallow observational strategy performs the worst, with up to a $\sim 10$ -- 60 per cent increase in the recovered uncertainty. The key challenge in the observation of the redshifted 21-cm signal from cosmic reionization is its separation from the much brighter foreground emission. Such separation relies on the different spectral properties of the two components, although, in real life, the foreground intrinsic spectrum is often corrupted by the instrumental response, inducing systematic effects that can further jeopardize the measurement of the 21-cm signal. In this paper, we use Gaussian Process Regression to model both foreground emission and instrumental systematics in $\sim 2$ hours of data from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array. We find that a simple co-variance model with three components matches the data well, giving a residual power spectrum with white noise properties. These consist of an "intrinsic" and instrumentally corrupted component with a coherence-scale of 20 MHz and 2.4 MHz respectively (dominating the line of sight power spectrum over scales $k_{\parallel} \le 0.2$ h cMpc$^{-1}$) and a baseline dependent periodic signal with a period of $\sim 1$ MHz (dominating over $k_{\parallel} \sim 0.4 - 0.8$h cMpc$^{-1}$) which should be distinguishable from the 21-cm EoR signal whose typical coherence-scales is $\sim 0.8$ MHz., 15 pages, 15 figures, 1 table, Accepted to MNRAS

We compute the bispectra of the 21cm signal during the Epoch of Reionization for three different reionization scenarios that are based on a dark matter N-body simulation combined with a self-consistent, semi-numerical model of galaxy evolution and reionization. Our reionization scenarios differ in their trends of ionizing escape fractions ($f_\mathrm{esc}$) with the underlying galaxy properties and cover the physically plausible range, i.e. $f_\mathrm{esc}$ effectively decreasing, being constant, or increasing with halo mass. We find the 21cm bispectrum to be sensitive to the resulting ionization topologies that significantly differ in their size distribution of ionized and neutral regions throughout reionization. From squeezed to stretched triangles, the 21cm bispectra features a change of sign from negative to positive values, with ionized and neutral regions representing below-average and above-average concentrations contributing negatively and positively, respectively. The position of the change of sign provides a tracer of the size distribution of the ionized and neutral regions, and allows us to identify three major regimes that the 21cm bispectrum undergoes during reionization. In particular the regime during the early stages of reionization, where the 21cm bispectrum tracks the peak of the size distribution of the ionized regions, provides exciting prospects for pinning down reionization with the forthcoming Square Kilometre Array., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. We present the first results from SPHINX-MHD, a suite of cosmological radiation-magnetohydrodynamics simulations designed to study the impact of primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) on galaxy formation and the evolution of the intergalactic medium during the epoch of reionization. The simulations are among the first to employ multi-frequency, on-the-fly radiation transfer and constrained transport ideal MHD in a cosmological context to simultaneously model the inhomogeneous process of reionization as well as the growth of PMFs. We run a series of $(5\,\text{cMpc})^3$ cosmological volumes, varying both the strength of the seed magnetic field ($B_0$) and its spectral index ($n_B$). We find that PMFs that have $n_B > -0.562\log_{10}\left(\frac{B_0}{1{\rm n}G}\right) - 3.35$ produce electron optical depths ($\tau_e$) that are inconsistent with CMB constraints due to the unrealistically early collapse of low-mass dwarf galaxies. For $n_B\geq-2.9$, our constraints are considerably tighter than the $\sim{\rm n}G$ constraints from Planck. PMFs that do not satisfy our constraints have little impact on the reionization history or the shape of the UV luminosity function. Likewise, detecting changes in the Lya forest due to PMFs will be challenging because photoionisation and photoheating efficiently smooth the density field. However, we find that the first absorption feature in the global 21cm signal is a sensitive indicator of the properties of the PMFs, even for those that satisfy our $\tau_e$ constraint. Furthermore, strong PMFs can marginally increase the escape of LyC photons by up to 25\% and shrink the effective radii of galaxies by $\sim44\%$ which could increase the completeness fraction of galaxy surveys. Finally, our simulations show that surveys with a magnitude limit of ${\rm M_{UV,1500}=-13}$ can probe the sources that provide the majority of photons for reionization out to $z=12$., Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures, accepted MNRAS

We present a study of the intersection between the populations of star forming galaxies selected as either Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.9 − 6.7 and within the same volume of universe sampled by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) behind the Hubble Frontier Fields lensing cluster A2744. We define three samples of star-forming galaxies: LBG galaxies with an LAE counterpart (92 galaxies), LBG galaxies without an LAE counterpart (408 galaxies), and LAE galaxies without an LBG counterpart (46 galaxies). All these galaxies are intrinsically faint because of the lensing nature of the sample (M1500 ≥ −20.5). The fraction of LAEs among all selected star-forming galaxies increases with redshift up to z ∼ 6 and decreases for higher redshifts, in agreement with previous findings. The evolution of LAE/LBG populations with UV magnitude and Lyα luminosity shows that the LAE selection is able to identify intrinsically UV faint galaxies with M1500 ≥ −15 that are typically missed in the deepest lensing photometric surveys. The LBG population seems to fairly represent the total population of star-forming galaxies down to M1500 ∼ −15. Galaxies with M1500 Lyα uv, whereas the opposite trend is observed within our sample for faint galaxies with M1500 > −17, including galaxies only detected by their Lyα emission, with a large scatter. These trends, previously observed in other samples of star-forming galaxies at high-z, are seen here for very faint M1500 ∼ −15 galaxies; that is, much fainter than in previous studies. The present results show no clear evidence for an intrinsic difference between the properties of the two populations selected as LBG and/or LAE. The observed trends could be explained by a combination of several phenomena, like the existence of different star-formation regimes, the dust content, the relative distribution and morphology of dust and stars, or the stellar populations.

In 21 cm cosmology, precision calibration is key to the separation of the neutral hydrogen signal from very bright but spectrally-smooth astrophysical foregrounds. The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), an interferometer specialized for 21 cm cosmology and now under construction in South Africa, was designed to be largely calibrated using the self-consistency of repeated measurements of the same interferometric modes. This technique, known as "redundant-baseline calibration" resolves most of the internal degrees of freedom in the calibration problem. It assumes, however, on antenna elements with identical primary beams placed precisely on a redundant grid. In this work, we review the detailed implementation of the algorithms enabling redundant-baseline calibration and report results with HERA data. We quantify the effects of real-world non-redundancy and how they compare to the idealized scenario in which redundant measurements differ only in their noise realizations. Finally, we study how non-redundancy can produce spurious temporal structure in our calibration solutions--both in data and in simulations--and present strategies for mitigating that structure., Comment: 24 Pages, 19 Figures. Early star-forming galaxies produced copious ionizing photons. A fraction of these photons escaped gas within galaxies to reionize the entire Universe. This escape fraction is crucial for determining how the Universe became reionized, but the neutral intergalactic medium precludes direct measurement of the escape fraction at high-redshifts. Indirect estimates of the escape fraction must describe how the Universe was reionized. Here, we present new Keck Cosmic Web Imager spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the resonant Mg II 2800 doublet from a redshift 0.36 galaxy, J1503+3644, with a previously observed escape fraction of 6%. The Mg II emission has a similar spatial extent as the stellar continuum, and each of the Mg II doublet lines are well-fit by single Gaussians. The Mg II is optically thin. The intrinsic flux ratio of the red and blue Mg II emission line doublet, $R = F_{2796}/F_{2803}$, is set by atomic physics to be two, but Mg$^+$ gas along the line of sight decreases $R$ proportional to the Mg II optical depth. Combined with the metallicity, $R$ estimates the neutral gas column density. The observed $R$ ranges across the galaxy from 0.8-2.7, implying a factor of 2 spatial variation of the relative escape fraction. All of the ionizing photons that escape J1503+3644 pass through regions of high $R$. We combine the Mg II emission and dust attenuation to accurately estimate the absolute escape fractions for ten local Lyman Continuum emitting galaxies and suggest that Mg II can predict escape fraction within the Epoch of Reionization., Updated a reference

arXiv:2004.04167v3, The leading contenders for the seeds of the first quasars are direct-collapse black holes (DCBHs) formed during catastrophic baryon collapse in atomically cooled halos at z ~ 20. The discovery of the Lyα emitter CR7 at z = 6.6 was initially held to be the first detection of a DCBH, although this interpretation has since been challenged on the grounds of Spitzer IRAC and Very Large Telescope X-Shooter data. Here we determine if radio flux from a DCBH in CR7 could be detected and discriminated from competing sources of radio emission in the halo such as young supernovae and H ii regions. We find that a DCBH would emit a flux of 10–200 nJy at 1.0 GHz, far greater than the sub-nJy signal expected for young supernovae but on par with continuum emission from star-forming regions. However, radio emission from a DCBH in CR7 could be distinguished from free–free emission from H ii regions by its spectral evolution with frequency and could be detected by the Square Kilometre Array in the coming decade., D. We present the Obelisk project, a cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulation following the assembly and reionization of a protocluster progenitor during the first two billions of years from the big bang, down to $z = 3.5$. The simulation resolves haloes down to the atomic cooling limit, and tracks the contribution of different sources of ionization: stars, active galactic nuclei, and collisions. The Obelisk project is designed specifically to study the coevolution of high redshift galaxies and quasars in an environment favouring black hole growth. In this paper, we establish the relative contribution of these two sources of radiation to reionization and their respective role in establishing and maintaining the high redshift ionizing background. Our volume is typical of an overdense region of the Universe and displays star formation rate and black hole accretion rate densities similar to high redshift protoclusters. We find that hydrogen reionization happens inside-out and is completed by $z \sim 6$ in our overdensity, and is predominantly driven by galaxies, while accreting black holes only play a role at $z \sim 4$., 24+2 pages, 18+1 figures, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

In this paper we use radiative transfer + N-body simulations to explore the feasibility of measurements of cross-correlations between the 21cm field observed by the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and high-z Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) detected in galaxy surveys with the Subaru Hyper Supreme Cam (HSC), Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) and Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). 21cm-LAE cross-correlations are in fact a powerful probe of the epoch of reionization as they are expected to provide precious information on the progress of reionization and the typical scale of ionized regions at different redshifts. The next generation observations with SKA will have a noise level much lower than those with its precursor radio facilities, introducing a significant improvement in the measurement of the cross-correlations. We find that an SKA-HSC/PFS observation will allow to investigate scales below ~10 Mpc/h and ~60 Mpc/h at z=7.3 and 6.6, respectively. WFIRST will allow to access also higher redshifts, as it is expected to observe spectroscopically ~900 LAEs per square degree and unit redshift in the range 7.5, Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Detecting and characterizing the Epoch of Reionization and Cosmic Dawn via the redshifted 21-cm hyperfine line of neutral hydrogen will revolutionize the study of the formation of the first stars, galaxies, black holes and intergalactic gas in the infant Universe. The wealth of information encoded in this signal is, however, buried under foregrounds that are many orders of magnitude brighter. These must be removed accurately and precisely in order to reveal the feeble 21-cm signal. This requires not only the modeling of the Galactic and extra-galactic emission, but also of the often stochastic residuals due to imperfect calibration of the data caused by ionospheric and instrumental distortions. To stochastically model these effects, we introduce a new method based on `Gaussian Process Regression' (GPR) which is able to statistically separate the 21-cm signal from most of the foregrounds and other contaminants. Using simulated LOFAR-EoR data that include strong instrumental mode-mixing, we show that this method is capable of recovering the 21-cm signal power spectrum across the entire range $k = 0.07 - 0.3 \ \rm{h\, cMpc^{-1}}$. The GPR method is most optimal, having minimal and controllable impact on the 21-cm signal, when the foregrounds are correlated on frequency scales $\gtrsim 3$\,MHz and the rms of the signal has $\sigma_{\mathrm{21cm}} \gtrsim 0.1\,\sigma_{\mathrm{noise}}$. This signal separation improves the 21-cm power-spectrum sensitivity by a factor $\gtrsim 3$ compared to foreground avoidance strategies and enables the sensitivity of current and future 21-cm instruments such as the {\sl Square Kilometre Array} to be fully exploited., Comment: 15 pages, accepted to MNRAS, augmented with new subsection and appendix, no changes to conclusion

Contamination due to foregrounds (Galactic and Extra-galactic), calibration errors and ionospheric effects pose major challenges in detection of the cosmic 21 cm signal in various Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiments. We present the results of a pilot study of a field centered on 3C196 using LOFAR Low Band (56-70 MHz) observations, where we quantify various wide field and calibration effects such as gain errors, polarized foregrounds, and ionospheric effects. We observe a `pitchfork' structure in the 2D power spectrum of the polarized intensity in delay-baseline space, which leaks into the modes beyond the instrumental horizon (EoR/CD window). We show that this structure largely arises due to strong instrumental polarization leakage ($\sim30\%$) towards {Cas\,A} ($\sim21$ kJy at 81 MHz, brightest source in northern sky), which is far away from primary field of view. We measure an extremely small ionospheric diffractive scale ($r_{\text{diff}} \approx 430$ m at 60 MHz) towards {Cas\,A} resembling pure Kolmogorov turbulence compared to $r_{\text{diff}} \sim3 - 20$ km towards zenith at 150 MHz for typical ionospheric conditions. This is one of the smallest diffractive scales ever measured at these frequencies. Our work provides insights in understanding the nature of aforementioned effects and mitigating them in future Cosmic Dawn observations (e.g. with SKA-low and HERA) in the same frequency window., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We model the transmission of the Lyman-alpha line through the circum- and intergalactic media around dark matter haloes expected to host Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) at z > 5.7, using the high-dynamic-range Sherwood simulations. We find very different CGM environments around more massive haloes (~10^11 M_sun) compared to less massive haloes (~10^9 M_sun) at these redshifts, which can contribute to a different evolution of the Lyman-alpha transmission from LAEs within these haloes. Additionally we confirm that part of the differential evolution could result from bright LAEs being more likely to reside in larger ionized regions. We conclude that a combination of the CGM environment and the IGM ionization structure is likely to be responsible for the differential evolution of the bright and faint ends of the LAE luminosity function at z > 6. More generally, we confirm the suggestion that the self-shielded neutral gas in the outskirts of the host halo can strongly attenuate the Lyman-alpha emission from high redshift galaxies. We find that this has a stronger effect on the more massive haloes hosting brighter LAEs. The faint-end of the LAE luminosity function is thus a more reliable probe of the average ionization state of the IGM. Comparing our model for LAEs with a range of observational data we find that the favoured reionization histories are our previously advocated `Late' and `Very Late' reionization histories, in which reionization finishes rather rapidly at around z ~ 6., 26 pages, 16 figures, 2 appendices; accepted for publication by MNRAS

Supermassive primordial stars forming in atomically-cooled halos at z∼15−20 are currently thought to be the progenitors of the earliest quasars in the Universe. In this picture, the star evolves under accretion rates of 0.1−1 M⊙ yr−1 until the general relativistic instability triggers its collapse to a black hole at masses of ∼105 M⊙. However, the ability of the accretion flow to sustain such high rates depends crucially on the photospheric properties of the accreting star, because its ionising radiation could reduce or even halt accretion. Here we present new models of supermassive Population III protostars accreting at rates 0.001−10 M⊙ yr−1, computed with the GENEVA stellar evolution code including general relativistic corrections to the internal structure. We use the polytropic stability criterion to estimate the mass at which the collapse occurs, which has been shown to give a lower limit of the actual mass at collapse in recent hydrodynamic simulations. We find that at accretion rates higher than 0.001 M⊙ yr−1 the stars evolve as red, cool supergiants with surface temperatures below 104 K towards masses >105M⊙, and become blue and hot, with surface temperatures above 105 K,only for rates ≲0.001 M⊙ yr−1. Compared to previous studies, our results extend the range of masses and accretion rates at which the ionising feedback remains weak, reinforcing the case for direct collapse as the origin of the first quasars.

We introduce simulations aimed at assessing how well weak gravitational lensing of 21cm radiation from the Epoch of Reionization ($z \sim 8$) can be measured by an SKA-like radio telescope. A simulation pipeline has been implemented to study the performance of lensing reconstruction techniques. We show how well the lensing signal can be reconstructed using the three-dimensional quadratic lensing estimator in Fourier space assuming different survey strategies. The numerical code introduced in this work is capable of dealing with issues that can not be treated analytically such as the discreteness of visibility measurements and the inclusion of a realistic model for the antennae distribution. This paves the way for future numerical studies implementing more realistic reionization models, foreground subtraction schemes, and testing the performance of lensing estimators that take into account the non-Gaussian distribution of HI after reionization. If multiple frequency channels covering $z \sim 7-11.6$ are combined, Phase 1 of SKA-Low should be able to obtain good quality images of the lensing potential with a total resolution of $\sim 1.6$ arcmin. The SKA-Low Phase 2 should be capable of providing images with high-fidelity even using data from $z\sim 7.7 - 8.3$. We perform tests aimed at evaluating the numerical implementation of the mapping reconstruction. We also discuss the possibility of measuring an accurate lensing power spectrum. Combining data from $z \sim 7-11.6$ using the SKA2-Low telescope model, we find constraints comparable to sample variance in the range $L, 23 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for pubblication in MNRAS

We present new spectroscopy of the z = 3.62 gravitationally lensed quasar B1422+117 from the Gemini North GMOS integral field spectrograph. We observe significant differential magnifications between the broad emission lines and the continuum, as well as across the velocity structure of the Lyman-a line. We take advantage of this differential microlensing to algebraically decompose the quasar spectrum into the absorbed broad emission line and absorbed continuum components.We use the latter to derive the intrinsic Ly α forest absorption spectrum. The proximity effect is clearly detected, with a proximity zone edge of 8.6-17.3Mpc from the quasar, implying (perhaps intermittent) activity over at least 28Myr. The Ly α line profile exhibits a blue excess that is inconsistent with a symmetric fit to the unabsorbed red side. This has important implications for the use of this fitting technique in estimating the absorbed blue Ly α wings of Gunn-Peterson trough quasars.

The nature of dark matter sets the timeline for the formation of first collapsed halos and thus affects the sources of reionization. Here, we consider two different models of dark matter: cold dark matter (CDM) and thermal warm dark matter (WDM), and study how they impact the epoch of reionization (EoR) and its 21-cm observables. Using a suite of simulations, we find that in the WDM scenarios, the structure formation on small scales gets suppressed resulting in a smaller number of low mass dark matter halos compared to the CDM scenario. Assuming that the efficiency of sources in producing ionizing photons remain the same, this leads to a lower number of total ionizing photons produced at any given cosmic time and thus in a delay in the reionization process. We also find visual differences in the neutral hydrogen (HI) topology and in 21-cm maps in case of the WDM compared to the CDM. However, differences in the 21-cm power spectra, at the same neutral fraction, are found to be small. Thus, we focus on the non-Gaussianity in the EoR 21-cm signal, quantified through its bispectrum. We find that the 21-cm bispectra (driven by the HI topology) are significantly different in WDM models when compared with CDM, even for same mass averaged neutral fractions. This establishes that the 21-cm bispectrum is a unique and promising way to differentiate between different dark matter models, and can be used to constrain the nature of the dark matter in the future EoR observations., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The observed properties of the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission line are a powerful probe of neutral gas in and around galaxies. We present spatially resolved Ly$\alpha$ spectroscopy with VLT/MUSE targeting VR7, a UV-luminous galaxy at $z=6.532$ with moderate Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW$_0\approx38$ {\AA}). These data are combined with deep resolved [CII]$_{\rm 158 \mu m}$ spectroscopy obtained with ALMA and UV imaging from {\it HST} and we also detect UV continuum with MUSE. Ly$\alpha$ emission is clearly detected with S/N $\approx40$ and FWHM of 374 km s$^{-1}$. Ly$\alpha$ and [CII] are similarly extended beyond the UV, with effective radius r$_{\rm eff} = 2.1\pm0.2$ kpc for a single exponential model or r$_{\rm eff, Ly\alpha, halo} = 3.45^{+1.08}_{-0.87}$ kpc when measured jointly with the UV continuum. The Ly$\alpha$ profile is broader and redshifted with respect to the [CII] line (by 213 km s$^{-1}$), but there are spatial variations that are qualitatively similar in both lines and coincide with resolved UV components. This suggests that the emission originates from two components with plausibly different HI column densities. We place VR7 in the context of other galaxies at similar and lower redshift. The Ly$\alpha$ halo scale length is similar at different redshifts and velocity shifts with respect to the systemic are typically smaller. Overall, we find little indications of a more neutral vicinity at higher redshift. This means that the local ($\sim 10$ kpc) neutral gas conditions that determine the observed Ly$\alpha$ properties in VR7 resemble the conditions in post-re-ionisation galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. We establish a robust statistical description of the star-forming galaxy population at the end of cosmic HI reionization ($5.0\le{}z\le6.6$) from a large sample of 52 galaxies with spectroscopically confirmed redshifts from the VIMOS UltraDeep Survey. We identify galaxies with Ly$\alpha$ either in absorption or in emission, at variance with most spectroscopic samples in the literature where Ly$\alpha$ emitters dominate. We find that star-forming galaxies at these redshifts are distributed along a main sequence in the stellar mass vs. SFR plane. We report a flat evolution of the sSFR(z) in 32. The bright end of the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function has a high number density, indicating a significant star formation activity concentrated in the brightest Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAE) at these redshifts. LAE with EW>25\AA ~contribute to about 75\% of the total UV-derived SFRD. While our analysis favors a low dust content in 5.0, Comment: 27 pages, submitted to A&A

We present an analysis of the evolution of the Lyman-series forest into the epoch of reionization using cosmological radiative transfer simulations in a scenario where reionization ends late. We explore models with different midpoints of reionization and gas temperatures. We find that once the simulations have been calibrated to match the mean flux of the observed Lyman-$\alpha$ forest at $4 < z < 6$, they also naturally reproduce the distribution of effective optical depths of the Lyman-$\beta$ forest in this redshift range. We note that the tail of the largest optical depths that is most challenging to match corresponds to the long absorption trough of ULAS J0148+0600, which we have previously shown to be rare in our simulations. We consider the evolution of the Lyman-series forest out to higher redshifts, and show that future observations of the Lyman-$\beta$ forest at $z>6$ will discriminate between different reionization histories. The evolution of the Lyman-$\alpha$ and Lyman-$\gamma$ forests are less promising as a tool for pushing studies of reionization to higher redshifts due to the stronger saturation and foreground contamination, respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Identifying low-redshift galaxies that emit Lyman Continuum radiation (LyC leakers) is one of the primary, indirect methods of studying galaxy formation in the epoch of reionization. However, not only has it proved challenging to identify such systems, it also remains uncertain whether the low-redshift LyC leakers are truly "analogues" of the sources that reionized the Universe. Here, we use high-resolution cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations to examine whether simulated galaxies in the epoch of reionization share similar emission line properties to observed LyC leakers at $z\sim3$ and $z\sim0$. We find that the simulated galaxies with high LyC escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc}$) often exhibit high O32 and populate the same regions of the R23-O32 plane as $z\sim3$ LyC leakers. However, we show that viewing angle, metallicity, and ionisation parameter can all impact where a galaxy resides on the O32-$f_{\rm esc}$ plane. Based on emission line diagnostics and how they correlate with $f_{\rm esc}$, lower-metallicity LyC leakers at $z\sim3$ appear to be good analogues of reionization-era galaxies. In contrast, local [SII]-deficient galaxies do not overlap with the simulated high-redshift LyC leakers on the SII-BPT diagram; however, this diagnostic may still be useful for identifying leakers. We use our simulated galaxies to develop multiple new diagnostics to identify LyC leakers using IR and nebular emission lines. We show that our model using only [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ and [OIII]$_{\rm 88\mu m}$ can identify potential leakers from non-leakers from the local Dwarf Galaxy Survey. Finally, we apply this diagnostic to known high-redshift galaxies and find that MACS1149_JD1 at $z=9.1$ is the most likely galaxy to be actively contributing to the reionization of the Universe., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

We present an estimation of the reionization optical depth $\tau$ from an improved analysis of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) data of Planck satellite. By using an improved version of the HFI map-making code, we greatly reduce the residual large scale contamination affecting the data, characterized, but not fully removed, in the Planck 2018 legacy release. This brings the dipole distortion systematic effect, contaminating the very low multipoles, below the noise level. On large scale polarization only data, we measure $\tau=0.0566_{-0.0062}^{+0.0053}$ at $68\%$ C.L., reducing the Planck 2018 legacy release uncertainty by $\sim40\%$. Within the $\Lambda$CDM model, in combination with the Planck large scale temperature likelihood, and the high-$\ell$ temperature and polarization likelihood, we measure $\tau=0.059\pm0.006$ at $68\%$ C.L. which corresponds to a mid-point reionization redshift of $z_{\rm re}=8.14\pm0.61$ at $68\%$ C.L.. Observations of the redshifted 21-cm hyperfine line of neutral hydrogen from early phases of the Universe such as Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization promise to open a new window onto the early formation of stars and galaxies. We present the first upper limits on the power spectrum of redshifted 21-cm brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshift range $z = 19.8 - 25.2$ ($54-68$ MHz frequency range) using 14 hours of data obtained with the LOFAR-Low Band Antenna (LBA) array. We also demonstrate the application of a multiple pointing calibration technique to calibrate the LOFAR-LBA dual-pointing observations centred on the North Celestial Pole and the radio galaxy 3C220.3. We observe an unexplained excess of $\sim 30-50\%$ in Stokes $I$ noise compared to Stokes $V$ for the two observed fields, which decorrelates on $\gtrsim 12$ seconds and might have a physical origin. We show that enforcing smoothness of gain errors along frequency direction during calibration reduces the additional variance in Stokes $I$ compared Stokes $V$ introduced by the calibration on sub-band level. After subtraction of smooth foregrounds, we achieve a $2\sigma$ upper limit on the 21-cm power spectrum of $\Delta_{21}^2 < (14561\,\text{mK})^2$ at $k\sim 0.038\,h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$ and $\Delta_{21}^2 < (14886\,\text{mK})^2$ at $k\sim 0.038 \,h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$ for the 3C220 and NCP fields respectively and both upper limits are consistent with each other. A long (110 cMpc/$h$) and deep absorption trough in the Ly$\alpha$ forest has been observed extending down to redshift 5.5 in the spectrum of ULAS J0148+0600. Although no Ly$\alpha$ transmission is detected, Ly$\beta$ spikes are present which has led to claims that the gas along this trough must be ionized. Using high resolution cosmological radiative transfer simulations in large volumes, we show that in a scenario where reionization ends late ($z \sim 5.2$), our simulations can reproduce troughs as long as observed. In this model, we find that the troughs are caused by islands of neutral hydrogen. Small ionized holes within the neutral islands allow for the transmission of Ly$\beta$. We have also modelled the Ly$\alpha$ emitter population around the simulated troughs, and show that there is a deficit of Ly$\alpha$ emitters close to the trough as is observed., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. We apply Bayesian statistics to perform model selection on different reionisation scenarios via the Multinest algorithm. Initially, we recover the results shown by 21CMMC for the parameter estimation of 21cmFAST models. We proceed to test several toy models of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) defined in contrasting morphology and scale. We find that LOFAR observations are unlikely to allow model selection even with long integration times. HERA would require 61 dipoles to perform the same analysis in 1080 hours, and becomes comparable to the SKA with 217 dipoles. We find the SKA requires only 324 hours of observation to conclusively distinguish between our models. Once model selection is achievable, an analysis of observational priors is performed finding that neutral fraction checks at specific redshifts add little to no inference. We show the difficulties in model selection at the level of distinguishing fiducial parameters within a model or distinguishing galaxies with a constant versus power law mass-to-light ratio. Finally, we explore the use of the Savage-Dickey density ratio to show the redundancy of the parameter Rmfp within 21cmFAST., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures - Accepted for publication by MNRAS

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will enable the detection of optical emission lines in galaxies spanning a broad range of luminosities out to redshifts z>10. Measurements of key galaxy properties, such as star formation rate and metallicity, through these observations will provide unique insight into, e.g., the role of feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in regulating galaxy evolution, the co-evolution of AGNs and host galaxies, the physical origin of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies and the contribution by star-forming galaxies to cosmic reionization. We present an original framework to simulate and analyse observations performed with the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST. We use the BEAGLE tool (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds) to build a semi-empirical catalogue of galaxy spectra based on photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of dropout galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). We demonstrate that the resulting catalogue of galaxy spectra satisfies different types of observational constraints on high redshift galaxies, and use it as input to simulate NIRSpec/prism (R~100) observations. We show that a single 'deep' (~100 ks) NIRSpec/prism pointing in the HUDF will enable S/N>3 detections of multiple optical emission lines in ~30 (~60) galaxies at z>6 (z~4-6) down to m_F160W, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the observed unresolved cosmic X-ray background (CXRB) in the 0.5-2 keV band and existing upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum to constrain the high-redshift population of X-ray sources, focusing on their effect on the thermal history of the Universe and the cosmic 21-cm signal. Because the properties of these sources are poorly constrained, we consider hot gas, X-ray binaries and mini-quasars (i.e., sources with soft or hard X-ray spectra) as possible candidates. We find that (1) the soft-band CXRB sets an upper limit on the X-ray efficiency of sources that existed before the end of reionization, which is one-to-two orders of magnitude higher than typically assumed efficiencies, (2) hard sources are more effective in generating the CXRB than the soft ones, (3) the commonly-assumed limit of saturated heating is not valid during the first half of reionization in the case of hard sources, with any allowed value of X-ray efficiency, (4) the maximal allowed X-ray efficiency sets a lower limit on the depth of the absorption trough in the global 21-cm signal and an upper limit on the height of the emission peak, while in the 21-cm power spectrum it sets a minimum amplitude and frequency for the high-redshift peaks, and (5) the existing upper limit on the 21-cm power spectrum sets a lower limit on the X-ray efficiency for each model. We introduce the "Asymmetric Radiative Transfer In Shells Technique" (ARTIST), a new method for photon propagation on large scales that explicitly conserves photons, propagates photons at the speed of light, approximately accounts for photon directionality, and closely reproduces results of more detailed radiative transfer (RT) codes. Crucially, it is computationally fast enough to evolve the large cosmological volumes required to predict the 21cm power spectrum on scales that will be probed by future experiments targeting the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR). Most semi-numerical models aimed at predicting the EoR 21cm signal make use of an excursion set formalism (ESF) approach, which achieves computational viability by compromising on photon conservation, constraining ionised regions to be spherical by construction, and not accounting for light-travel time. By implementing our RT method within the semi-numerical code SimFast21, we show that ARTIST predicts a significantly different evolution for the EoR ionisation field compared to the code's native ESF. In particular, ARTIST predicts a more gradual evolution of the volume-averaged ionisation fraction, and up to an order-of-magnitude difference in the ionisation power, depending on the physical parameters assumed. Its application to large-scale EoR simulations will therefore allow more physically-motivated constraints to be obtained for key EoR parameters, such as the escape fraction., 18 pages, 16 figures, published by MNRAS (14 August 2019)

Reionization leads to large spatial fluctuations in the intergalactic temperature that can persist well after its completion. We study the imprints of such fluctuations on the $z\sim5$ Ly$\alpha$ forest flux power spectrum using a set of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations that model different reionization scenarios. We find that large-scale coherent temperature fluctuations bring $\sim20-60\%$ extra power at $k\sim0.002$ s/km, with the largest enhancements in the models where reionization is extended or ends the latest. On smaller scales ($k\gtrsim0.1$ s/km), we find that temperature fluctuations suppress power by $\lesssim10\%$. We find that the shape of the power spectrum is mostly sensitive to the reionization midpoint rather than temperature fluctuations from reionization's patchiness. However, for all of our models with reionization midpoints of $z\le 8$ ($z\le 12$) the shape differences are $\lesssim20\%$ ($\lesssim40\%$) because of a surprisingly well-matched cancellation between thermal broadening and pressure smoothing that occurs for realistic thermal histories. We also consider fluctuations in the ultraviolet background, finding their impact on the power spectrum to be much smaller than temperature fluctuations at $k\gtrsim0.01$ s/km. Whether stars could have driven the reionization of the intergalactic medium depends critically on the proportion of ionizing radiation that escapes the galaxies in which it is produced. Spectroscopy of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows can be used to estimate the opacity to extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation along the lines-of-sight to the bursts. Assuming that long-duration GRBs trace the locations of the massive stars dominating EUV production, the average escape fraction of ionizing radiation can be calculated independently of galaxy size or luminosity. Here we present a compilation of H i column density (N HI ) measures for 140 GRBs in the range 1.6 < z < 6.7. Although the sample is heterogeneous, in terms of spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, fits to the Ly α absorption line provide robust constraints on N HI , even for spectra of insufficient quality for other purposes. Thus we establish an escape fraction at the Lyman limit of (f esc ) ≈ 0.005, with a 98 per cent confidence upper limit of (f esc ) ≈ 0.015. This analysis suggests that stars provide a small contribution to the ionizing radiation budget at z < 5. At higher redshifts firm conclusions are limited by the small size of the GRB sample (7/140), but any decline in average H i column density seems to be modest. We also find no significant correlation of N HI with galaxy UV luminosity or host stellar mass. We discuss in some detail potential biases and argue that, while not negligible, systematic errors in f esc are unlikely to be more than a factor ~2 in either direction, and so would not affect the primary conclusions. We present a new statistical tool, called the triangle correlation function (TCF), inspired by the earlier work of Obreschkow et al. It is derived from the three-point correlation function and aims to probe the characteristic scale of ionized regions during the epoch of reionization from 21cm interferometric observations. Unlike most works, which focus on power spectrum, i.e. amplitude information, our statistic is based on the information we can extract from the phases of the Fourier transform of the ionization field. In this perspective, it may benefit from the well-known interferometric concept of closure phases. We find that this statistical estimator performs very well on simple ionization fields. For example, with well-defined fully ionized discs, there is a peaking scale, which we can relate to the radius of the ionized bubbles. We explore the robustness of the TCF when observational effects such as angular resolution and noise are considered. We also get interesting results on fields generated by more elaborate simulations such as 21CMFAST. Although the variety of sources and ionized morphologies in the early stages of the process make its interpretation more challenging, the nature of the signal can tell us about the stage of reionization. With a total integration time of 168 h and a narrowband filter tuned to Lyα emission from z = 8.8, the UltraVISTA survey has set out to find some of the most distant galaxies, on the verge of the epoch of reionization. Previous calculations of the expected number of detected Lyα-emitting galaxies (LAEs) at this redshift based for example on extrapolation of lower-redshift luminosity functions did not explicitly take into account the radiative transfer of Lyα. In this work we have combined a theoretical model for the halo mass function, that is, the expected number of haloes per volume, with numerical results from high-resolution cosmological hydro-simulations post-processed with radiative transfer of ionizing UV and Lyα radiation, assessing the visibility of LAEs residing in these haloes. We have taken into account uncertainties such as cosmic variance and the anisotropic escape of Lyα, and predict that once the survey has finished, the probabilities of detecting none, one, or more than one are roughly 90%, 10%, and 1%, respectively. This is a significantly smaller success rate than in earlier predictions, due to the combined effect of a highly neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) scattering Lyα to such large distances from the galaxy that they fall outside the observational aperture, and to the actual depth of the survey being less than predicted. Because the IGM affects narrowband (NB) and broadband (BB) magnitudes differently, we argue for a relaxed colour selection criterion of mNB − mBB ≃ +0.85 in the AB system. Since the flux is dominated by the continuum, however, even if a galaxy is detectable in the NB, its probability of being selected as a narrowband excess object is ≲35%. Various additional properties of galaxies at this redshift are predicted, for example, the Lyα and UV luminosity functions, the stellar mass–halo mass relation, the spectral shape, the optimal aperture, as well as the anisotropic escape of Lyα through both the dusty, interstellar medium and through the partly neutral IGM. Finally, we describe and make public a fast numerical code for adding numbers with asymmetric uncertainties (“x+σ+−σ−”) which proves significantly more precise than the standard, but wrong, way of separately adding upper and lower uncertainties in quadrature.

[Context]: Cosmic reionization put an end to the dark ages that came after the recombination era. Observations seem to favor the scenario of massive-star photons generated in low-mass galaxies being responsible for the bulk of reionization and, whereas a possible contribution from AGN accretion disks has been widely considered, they are currently thought to have had a minor role in reionization. [Aims]: We aim to study the possibility of AGN having contributed to reionization not only through their accretion disks, but also through ionizing photons coming from the AGN jets interacting with the intergalactic medium. Methods. We adopt an empirically derived AGN luminosity function at z ≃ 6, use X-ray observations to correct it for the presence of obscured sources, and estimate the density of jetted AGN. We then use analytical calculations to derive the fraction of jet energy that goes into ionizing photons. Finally, we compute the contribution of AGN jets to the H II volume filling factor at redshifts z ≃ 15-5. [Results]: We show that the contribution of the AGN jet lobes to the reionization of the Universe at z ∼ 6 might have been as high as ? 10% of that of star-forming galaxies, under the most favorable conditions of jetted and obscuration fraction. The collapse of supermassive primordial stars in hot, atomically-cooled halos may have given birth to the first quasars at $z \sim$ 15 - 20. Recent numerical simulations of these rapidly accreting stars reveal that they are cool, red hypergiants shrouded by dense envelopes of pristine atomically-cooled gas at 6,000 - 8,000 K, with luminosities $L$ $\gtrsim$ 10$^{10}$ L$_{\odot}$. Could such luminous but cool objects be detected as the first stage of quasar formation in future near infrared (NIR) surveys? We have now calculated the spectra of supermassive primordial stars in their birth envelopes with the Cloudy code. We find that some of these stars will be visible to JWST at $z \lesssim$ 20 and that with modest gravitational lensing Euclid and WFIRST could detect them out to $z \sim$ 10 - 12. Rather than obscuring the star, its accretion envelope enhances its visibility in the NIR today by reprocessing its short-wavelength flux into photons that are just redward of the Lyman limit in the rest frame of the star., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJL

We use extensive spectroscopy from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey to investigate the relationships between rest-frame optical emission line equivalent widths ($W$) and a number of galaxy and ISM characteristics for a sample of $1134$ star-forming galaxies at redshifts $1.4\lesssim z\lesssim 3.8$. We examine how the equivalent widths of [OII]$\lambda\lambda 3727, 3730$, H$\beta$, [OIII]$\lambda\lambda 4960, 5008$, [OIII]$+$H$\beta$, H$\alpha$, and H$\alpha$+[NII]$\lambda\lambda 6550, 6585$, depend on stellar mass, UV slope, age, star-formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR), ionization parameter and excitation conditions (O32 and [OIII]/H$\beta$), gas-phase metallicity, and ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_{\rm ion}$). The trend of increasing $W$ with decreasing stellar mass is strongest for [OIII] (and [OIII]+H$\beta$). More generally, the equivalent widths of all the lines increase with redshift at a fixed stellar mass or fixed gas-phase metallicity, suggesting that high equivalent width galaxies are common at high redshift. This redshift evolution in equivalent widths can be explained by the increase in SFR and decrease in metallicity with redshift at a fixed stellar mass. Consequently, the dependence of $W$ on sSFR is largely invariant with redshift, particularly when examined for galaxies of a given metallicity. Our results show that high equivalent width galaxies, specifically those with high $W({\rm [OIII]})$, have low stellar masses, blue UV slopes, young ages, high sSFRs, ISM line ratios indicative of high ionization parameters, high $\xi_{\rm ion}$, and low metallicities. How, when and where the first stars formed are fundamental questions regarding the epoch of Cosmic Dawn. A second order effect in the fluid equations was recently found to make a significant contribution: an offset velocity between gas and dark matter, the so-called streaming velocity. Previous simulations of a limited number of low-mass dark matter haloes suggest that this streaming velocity can delay the formation of the first stars and decrease halo gas fractions and the halo mass function in the low mass regime. However, a systematic exploration of its effects in a large sample of haloes has been lacking until now. In this paper, we present results from a set of cosmological simulations of regions of the Universe with different streaming velocities performed with the moving mesh code AREPO. Our simulations have very high mass resolution, enabling us to accurately resolve minihaloes as small as $10^5 \: {\rm M_{\odot}}$. We show that in the absence of streaming, the least massive halo that contains cold gas has a mass $M_{\rm halo, min} = 5 \times 10^{5} \: {\rm M_{\odot}}$, but that cooling only becomes efficient in a majority of haloes for halo masses greater than $M_{\rm halo,50\%} = 1.6 \times 10^6 \: {\rm M_{\odot}}$. In regions with non-zero streaming velocities, $M_{\rm halo, min}$ and $M_{\rm halo,50\%}$ both increase significantly, by around a factor of a few for each one sigma increase in the value of the local streaming velocity. As a result, in regions with streaming velocities $v_\mathrm{stream} \ge 3\,\sigma_\mathrm{rms}$, cooling of gas in minihaloes is completely suppressed, implying that the first stars in these regions form within atomic cooling haloes., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS

We present new HST/WFC3 observations and re-analyse VLT data to unveil the continuum, variability and rest-frame UV lines of the multiple UV clumps of the most luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitter at z=6.6, CR7. Our re-reduced, flux calibrated X-SHOOTER spectra of CR7 reveal a HeII emission line in observations obtained along the major axis of Lyman-alpha (Lya) emission with the best seeing conditions. HeII is spatially offset by +0.8'' from the peak of Lya emission, and it is found towards clump B. Our WFC3 grism spectra detects the UV continuum of CR7's clump A, yielding a power law with $\beta=-2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.7}$ and $M_{UV}=-21.87^{+0.25}_{-0.20}$. No significant variability is found for any of the UV clumps on their own, but there is tentative (~2.2$\sigma$) brightening of CR7 in F110W as a whole from 2012 to 2017. HST grism data fail to robustly detect rest-frame UV lines in any of the clumps, implying fluxes, Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS.
