(Solar Phys. 162(1-2), 1–37 1995), STEREO Howard et al. (Space Sci. Rev. 136(1-4), 67–115 2008), Hinode Kosugi et al. (Solar Phys. 243(1), 3–17 2007), Pesnell et al. Solar Phys. 275(1–2), 3–15 2012), but will focus for the first time on the solar poles, enabling scientific investigations that cannot be done by any other mission. One of the major mysteries of the Sun is the solar cycle. The activity cycle of the Sun drives the structure and behaviour of the heliosphere and of course, the driver of space weather. In addition, solar activity and variability provides fluctuating input into the Earth climate models, and these same physical processes are applicable to stellar systems hosting exoplanets. One of the main obstructions to understanding the solar cycle, and hence all solar activity, is our current lack of understanding of the polar regions. In this White Paper, submitted to the European Space Agency in response to the Voyage 2050 call, we describe a mission concept that aims to address this fundamental issue. In parallel, we recognise that viewing the Sun from above the polar regions enables further scientific advantages, beyond those related to the solar cycle, such as unique and powerful studies of coronal mass ejection processes, from a global perspective, and studies of coronal structure and activity in polar regions. This paper is to introduce a proposed deep space mission, which aims to perform in situ detection of the central structure, namely the magnetic reconnection current sheet, which drives the large-scale eruption on a star. The main focus of this mission is on the fine physical characteristics of the large-scale magnetic reconnection taking place on the Sun, our nearest star, revealing the secret of the most violent energy release process, also known as the solar storm, in the solar system. The scientific goal of this mission, magnetic reconnection, is a kernel process of energy conversion occurring in the magnetized plasma in the universe, and has long been a fairly important research topic or even research area in solar physics, space science, plasma physics, and the related fields. The in situ detection with a 5 ∼ 20 times enhanced spatial resolution of the instruments used on the Earth will provide us with the extra-clear images of the Sun and the related information. We are thus able to study, to learn, and to understand the Sun on an unprecedented platform, and further resolve the longstanding puzzle in the solar community regarding the fine physical property of the kernel process driving the solar eruption, as well as that of the coronal heating.

The solar gravitational moments $J_{2n}$ are important astronomical quantities whose precise determination is relevant for solar physics, gravitational theory and high precision astrometry and celestial mechanics. Accordingly, we propose in the present work to calculate new values of $J_{2n}$ (for $n$=1,2,3,4 and 5) using recent two-dimensional rotation rates inferred from the high resolution SDO/HMI helioseismic data spanning the whole solar activity cycle 24. To this aim, a general integral equation relating $J_{2n}$ to the solar internal density and rotation is derived from the structure equations governing the equilibrium of slowly rotating stars. For comparison purpose, the calculations are also performed using rotation rates obtained from a recently improved analysis of SoHO/MDI heliseismic data for solar cycle 23. In agreement with earlier findings, the results confirmed the sensitivity of high order moments ($n>1$) to the radial and latitudinal distribution of rotation in the convective zone. The computed value of the quadrupole moment $J_{2}$ ($n=1$) is in accordance with recent measurements of the precession of Mercury's perihelion deduced from high precision ranging data of the MESSENGER spacecraft. The theoretical estimate of the related solar oblateness $\Delta_{\odot}$ is consistent with the most accurate space-based determinations, particularly the one from RHESSI/SAS., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We developed a scan mirror mechanism (SMM) that enable a slit-based spectrometer or spectropolarimeter to precisely and quickly map an astronomical object. The SMM, designed to be installed in the optical path preceding the entrance slit, tilts a folding mirror and then moves the reflected image laterally on the slit plane, thereby feeding a different one-dimensional image to be dispersed by the spectroscopic equipment. In general, the SMM is required to scan quickly and broadly while precisely placing the slit position across the field-of-view (FOV). These performances are in high demand for near-future observations, such as studies on the magnetohydrodynamics of the photosphere and the chromosphere. Our SMM implements a closed-loop control system by installing electromagnetic actuators and gap-based capacitance sensors. Our optical test measurements confirmed that the SMM fulfills the following performance criteria: i) supreme scan-step uniformity (linearity of 0.08%) across the wide scan range (±1005′′), ii) high stability (3σ=0.1′′), where the angles are expressed in mechanical angle, and iii) fast stepping speed (26 ms). The excellent capability of the SMM will be demonstrated soon in actual use by installing the mechanism for a near-infrared spectropolarimeter onboard the balloon-borne solar observatory for the third launch, SUNRISE III. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V., The balloon-borne solar observatory SUNRISE III is a mission of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS, Germany), and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL, USA). An intense solar energetic particle (SEP) event was observed on 2021 October 9 by multiple spacecraft distributed near the ecliptic plane at heliocentric radial distances R ≲ 1 au and within a narrow range of heliolongitudes. A stream interaction region (SIR), sequentially observed by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) at R = 0.76 au and 48° east from Earth (ϕ = E48°), STEREO-A (at R = 0.96 au, ϕ = E39°), Solar Orbiter (SolO; at R = 0.68 au, ϕ = E15°), BepiColombo (at R = 0.33 au, ϕ = W02°), and near-Earth spacecraft, regulated the observed intensity-time profiles and the anisotropic character of the SEP event. PSP, STEREO-A, and SolO detected strong anisotropies at the onset of the SEP event, which resulted from the fact that PSP and STEREO-A were in the declining-speed region of the solar wind stream responsible for the SIR and from the passage of a steady magnetic field structure by SolO during the onset of the event. By contrast, the intensity-time profiles observed near Earth displayed a delayed onset at proton energies ≳13 MeV and an accumulation of ≲5 MeV protons between the SIR and the shock driven by the parent coronal mass ejection (CME). Even though BepiColombo, STEREO-A, and SolO were nominally connected to the same region of the Sun, the intensity-time profiles at BepiColombo resemble those observed near Earth, with the bulk of low-energy ions also confined between the SIR and the CME-driven shock. This event exemplifies the impact that intervening large-scale interplanetary structures, such as corotating SIRs, have in shaping the properties of SEP events., Solar Orbiter is a space mission of international collaboration between ESA and NASA, operated by ESA. Identifying the heating mechanisms of the solar corona and the driving mechanisms of solar wind are key challenges in understanding solar physics. A full three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation was conducted to distinguish between the heating mechanisms in the fast solar wind above the open field region. Our simulation describes the evolution of the Alfvénic waves, which includes the compressible effects from the photosphere to the heliospheric distance s of 27 solar radii (R⊙). The hot corona and fast solar wind were reproduced simultaneously due to the dissipation of the Alfvén waves. The inclusion of the transition region and lower atmosphere enabled us to derive the solar mass-loss rate for the first time by performing a full three-dimensional compressible MHD simulation. The Alfvén turbulence was determined to be the dominant heating mechanism in the solar wind acceleration region (s > 1.3 R⊙), as suggested by previous solar wind models. In addition, shock formation and phase mixing are important below the lower transition region (s < 1.03 R⊙) as well.

To view a copy of this licence, visit http://creativecommons.org/licen ses/by/4.0/, Our knowledge about the solar chromosphere and transition region (TR) has increased in the last decade thanks to the huge scientific return of space-borne observatories like SDO, IRIS, and Hinode, and suborbital rocket experiments like CLASP1, CLASP2, and Hi-C. However, the magnetic nature of those solar regions remain barely explored. The chromosphere and TR of the Sun harbor weak fields and are in a low ionization stage both having critical effects on their thermodynamic behavior. Relatively cold gas structures, such as spicules and prominences, are located in these two regions and display a dynamic evolution in high-resolution observations that static and instantaneous 3D-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models are not able to reproduce. The role of the chromosphere and TR as the necessary path to a (largely unexplained) very hot corona calls for the generation of observationally based, time-dependent models of these two layers that include essential, up to now disregarded, ingredients in the modeling such as the vector magnetic field. We believe that the community is convinced that the origin of both the heat and kinetic energy observed in the upper layers of the solar atmosphere is of magnetic origin, but reliable magnetic field measurements are missing. The access to sensitive polarimetric measurements in the ultraviolet wavelengths has been elusive until recently due to limitations in the available technology. We propose a low-risk and high-Technology Readiness Level (TRL) mission to explore the magnetism and dynamics of the solar chromosphere and TR. The mission baseline is a low-Earth, Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude between 600 and 800 km. The proposed scientific payload consists of a 30 cm aperture telescope with a spectropolarimeter covering the hydrogen Ly-alpha and the Mg II h&k ultraviolet lines. The instrument shall record high-cadence, full spectropolarimetric observations of the solar upper atmosphere. Besides the answers to a fundamental solar problem the mission has a broader scientific return. For example, the time-dependent modeling of the chromospheres of stars harboring exoplanets is fundamental for estimating the planetary radiation environment. Besides their causal connection with long and short-term magnetic variability, solar bipolar magnetic regions are our chief source of insight into the location, size, and properties of large-scale toroidal magnetic structures in the solar interior. The great majority of these regions (~95%) follow a systematic east-west polarity orientation (Hale's law) that reverses in opposite hemispheres and across even and odd cycles. These regions also present a systematic north-south polarity orientation (Joy's law) that helps build the poloidal field that seeds the new cycle. Exceptions to Hale's law are rare and difficult to study due to their low numbers. Here, we present a statistical analysis of the inclination (tilt) with respect to the equator of Hale versus anti-Hale regions spanning four solar cycles, considering two complementary tilt definitions adopted in previous studies. Our results show that anti-Hale regions belong to a separate population than Hale regions, suggesting a different originating mechanism. However, we find that anti-Hale region tilts present similar systematic tilt properties and similar latitudinal distributions to Hale regions, implying a strong connection between the two. We see this as evidence that they belong to a common toroidal flux system. We speculate that anti-Hale regions originate from poloidal field sheared and strengthened on the spot after the emergence of Hale regions with very strong poloidal contribution. Thus, they are not in contradiction with the idea of largely coherent toroidal flux systems inside the solar interior.

We present a study of multi-wavelength observations, of a C 2.3 solar flare in Active Region NOAA 12353, observed on 2015 May 23, which reveal new properties of acoustic waves in the flaring region. The space-, and ground-based data measured by the HELioseismological Large Regions Interferometric Device, operating at the Vacuum Tower Telescope, the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory, were used in this paper. First, using power spectra of solar oscillations, we identified the dominant frequencies and their location at seven different atmospheric levels before and after the flare event. Second, based on AIA observations taken in six Extreme Ultraviolet filters, we derived Differential Emission Measure (DEM) profiles and DEM maps of the flare. Finally, we confirm the {\sigma}-classification of the magnetic field in the active area, directly related to the flare. Our results are as follows: the high-frequency waves ({\nu}>5 mHz) in the photosphere, in both cases, before and after the flare, are generated at the foot-points of the chromospheric loop, while in the chromosphere (H{\alpha} line), before the event the power enhancement exhibits for maximum of flare emission, and after the eruption the enhancement by all frequencies is observed only in the post flare loop area. Moreover, the power of oscillation in the pores surrounding area before the flare has a random character, while after the flare oscillation's power is concentrated in the pore, and weakened outside of. We conclude that the accurate detection of high-frequency acoustic waves in the active regions can lead to faster and easier prediction of high-energy events., Comment: Most important figures in Appendix Fig.12 and Fig.13

We analyzed spectropolarimetric data from the Swedish 1-meter Solar Telescope to investigate physical properties of small-scale magnetic cancellations in the quiet Sun photosphere. Specifically, we looked at the full Stokes polarization profiles along the Fe I 557.6 nm and of the Fe I 630.1 nm lines measured by CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter (CRISP) to study temporal evolution of the line-of-sight (LOS) magnetic field during 42.5 minutes of quiet Sun evolution. From this magnetogram sequence, we visually identified 38 cancellation events. We then used Yet Another Feature Tracking Algorithm (YAFTA) to characterize physical properties of these magnetic cancellations. We found on average $1.6\times10^{16}$ Mx of magnetic flux cancelled in each event with an average cancellation rate of $3.8\times10^{14}$ Mx s$^{-1}$. The derived cancelled flux is associated with strong downflows, with an average speed of $V_\mathrm{LOS}\approx1.1$ km s$^{-1}$. Our results show that the average lifetime of each event is $9.2$ minutes with an average $44.8\%$ of initial magnetic flux being cancelled. Our estimates of magnetic fluxes provide a lower limit since studied magnetic cancellation events have magnetic field values that are very close to the instrument noise level. We observed no horizontal magnetic fields at the cancellation sites and therefore can not conclude whether the events are associated structures that could cause magnetic reconnection., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, accepted into ApJ on 06/08/2022

In this paper, we evaluate the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) north–south asymmetry using the ecliptical sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) reconstructed since the second half of the 19th century. During the last five solar cycles, the inferred IMF polarities fairly reproduce the observed dominance of the sectors with the polarity of the northern solar hemisphere, i.e., the prolonged southward shift of the HCS. For the presatellite era, we found that the northward shift of the HCS was more common in cycles 10, 15, and 17–19, and the southward HCS shift was more common in cycles 9, 11–14, and 16. We also analyzed the north–south asymmetry in sunspot group numbers since 1749 and found that the northern hemisphere dominated in cycles 2–3, 7–9, and 15–20, and the southern hemisphere activity was stronger in cycles 4, 9–14, and 21–24. Moreover, other solar phenomena bear similar long-term asymmetry variations. The regularity of these variations is not clear. According to the available proxies of the solar data, the dominance of the northern hemisphere is found in the ascending phase of the secular solar cycle, and the dominance of the southern hemisphere coincides with the descending phase.

The physical properties responsible for the formation and evolution of the corona and heliosphere are still not completely understood. 3D MHD global modeling is a powerful tool to investigate all the possible candidate processes. To fully understand the role of each of them, we need a validation process where the output from the simulations is quantitatively compared to the observational data. In this work, we present the results from our validation process applied to the wave turbulence driven 3D MHD corona-wind model WindPredict-AW. At this stage of the model development, we focus the work to the coronal regime in quiescent condition. We analyze three simulations results, which differ by the boundary values. We use the 3D distributions of density and temperature, output from the simulations at the time of around the First Parker Solar Probe perihelion (during minimum of the solar activity), to synthesize both extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and white light polarized (WL pB) images to reproduce the observed solar corona. For these tests, we selected AIA 193 A, 211 A and 171 A EUV emissions, MLSO K-Cor and LASCO C2 pB images obtained the 6 and 7 November 2018. We then make quantitative comparisons of the disk and off limb corona. We show that our model is able to produce synthetic images comparable to those of the observed corona., Comment: in press

Research on the detection of solar events has been conducted over many years. Recently, deep learning and data-driven approaches have been applied to solar event recognition. In this study, we present solar event detection using deep-learning-based object detection methods for real-time space weather monitoring. First, we construct a new object detection dataset using imaging data obtained by the Solar Dynamics Observatory with bounding boxes as labels for three representative features: coronal holes, sunspots, and prominences. Second, we train two representative object detection models: the Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) and the Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN) using the new dataset. The results show that both models perform similarly well for coronal hole and sunspot detection. For prominence detection, the SSD and Faster R-CNN exhibited relatively low performance. This study demonstrates that deep-learning-based object detection can successfully detect multiple types of solar events, and it may be extended to detect other solar events. In addition, we provide the dataset for further achievements of object detection studies in solar physics.

Sunquakes (SQs) have been routinely observed in the solar photosphere, but it is only recently that signatures of these events have been detected in the chromosphere. We investigate whether signatures of SQs are common in Ultraviolet (UV) continua, which sample the solar plasma several hundred km above where SQs are typically detected. We analyse observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA) 1600 {\AA} and 1700 {\AA} passbands, for SQ signatures induced by the flares of Solar Cycle 24. We base our analysis on the 62 SQs detected in the recent statistical study presented by Sharykin & Zosovichev (2020). We find that 9 out of 62 SQ candidates produced a response that is clearly detected in running difference images from the AIA 1600 {\AA} and 1700 {\AA} channels. A binary frequency filter with a width of 2 mHz, centred on 6 mHz, was applied to the data. The first signature of each SQ was detected at distances between 5.2 Mm to 25.7 Mm from the associated flare ribbon. Time-distance and regression analysis allowed us to calculate the apparent transverse velocities of the SQs in the UV datasets and found maximum velocities as high as 41 km s-1, 87 Mm away from the SQ source. Our analysis shows that flare induced SQ signatures can be detected in the SDO/AIA 1600 {\AA} and 1700 {\AA} passbands, hinting at their presence in the lower chromosphere. There was no apparent correlation between GOES flare classification, and the appearance of the SQ at these heights.

PAMELA, a medium-sized experiment for the detection of cosmic rays, took data in space from 2006 to 2016. Composed of a magnetic spectrometer and several auxiliary detectors, the instrument compensated the reduced dimensions with the high performance of the individual detectors to obtain high-precision measurements over a range of energy from tens of MeV/n to 1 TeV/n. In ten years of operation PAMELA revealed very interesting features in cosmic rays, namely in the fluxes of protons, helium, electrons, that might change our basic vision of the mechanisms of production, acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Amazing and stimulating have been the measurements of cosmic antiproton and positron fluxes that have allowed the nature of dark matter to be probed in a new way, suggesting new ideas and setting strong constraints to the models. The constant monitoring of the solar activity and the detailed study of the solar modulation of cosmic rays for a long period have boosted important improvements to the comprehension of the heliosphere mechanisms. PAMELA also measured the radiation environment around the Earth and discovered an antiproton radiation belt.

Automatic detection of solar events, especially uncommon events such as coronal dimming (CD) and coronal wave (CW), is very important in solar physics research. The CD and CW are not only related to the detection of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) but also affect space weather. In this paper, we have studied methods for automatically detecting them. In addition, we have collected and processed a dataset that includes the solar images and event records, where the solar images come from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) of Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the event records come from Heliophysics Event Knowledgebase (HEK). Different from the methods used before, we introduce the idea of deep learning. We train single-wavelength and multiwavelength models based on Faster R-CNN. In terms of accuracy, the single-wavelength model performs better. The multiwavelength model has a better detection performance on multiple solar events than the single-wavelength model.

It is a common practice in the solar physics community to judge whether the measured photospheric vector magnetograms are force-free or not. In the previous work, it was studied how the measurement limitations such as the limited field of view, instrument sensitivity, and measurement error could affect the judgement of force-freeness based on the observed magnetograms. A further research on the influence of the spatial resolution on the force-freeness judgement is carried out in this article. The result shows that changing (mainly reducing) the spatial resolution has little influence on the force-freeness judgement in the ideal noiseless case. In the case when there are white noises in the magnetograms as those in the really observed magnetograms, it is opposite to the common intuition that properly reducing the spatial resolution can actually suppress the error, and significantly reduce the heavy influence of the measurement error on the force-freeness judgement, thus to enhance effectively the accuracy of the force-freeness judgement of magnetic field. This result sets up a theoretical foundation and an instructive guidance for judging the force-freeness of solar magnetic field correctly by using the observed magnetograms.

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data recorded within a heliocentric radial distance of 0.3 AU have revealed a magnetic field dominated by Alfv\'enic structures that undergo large local variations or even reversals of the radial magnetic field. They are called magnetic switchbacks, they are consistent with folds in magnetic field lines within a same magnetic sector, and are associated with velocity spikes during an otherwise calmer background. They are thought to originate either in the low solar atmosphere through magnetic reconnection processes, or result from the evolution of turbulence or velocity shears in the expanding solar wind. In this work, we investigate the temporal and spatial characteristic scales of magnetic switchback patches. We define switchbacks as a deviation from the nominal Parker spiral direction and detect them automatically for PSP encounters 1, 2, 4 and 5. We focus in particular on a 5.1-day interval dominated by switchbacks during E5. We perform a wavelet transform of the solid angle between the magnetic field and the Parker spiral and find periodic spatial modulations with two distinct wavelengths, respectively consistent with solar granulation and supergranulation scales. In addition we find that switchback occurrence and spectral properties seem to depend on the source region of the solar wind rather than on the radial distance of PSP. These results suggest that switchbacks are formed in the low corona and modulated by the solar surface convection pattern., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The concept of energetic particle reservoirs, essentially based on the assumption of the presence of outer reflecting boundaries/magnetic mirrors or diffusion barriers (deterministic) rather than on the effect of particle diffusive propagation (stochastic) in magnetic turbulence, has been used for decades to describe the space-extended decay phases of energetic particle events within the fields of space physics, solar physics, and plasma physics. Using five-dimensional time-dependent Fokker-Planck transport equation simulations, in this work we demonstrate that the so-called particle reservoirs are naturally explained and quantitatively reproduced by diffusion processes in turbulent magnetic fields, without invoking the hypothesis of reflecting boundaries. Our results strongly suggest that the so-called "reservoir" (based on deterministic structure) should be renamed "flood" (based on stochastic diffusion), which symbolizes an authentic shift in thinking and in pragmatic rationale for the studies of energetic particles and relevant plasma phenomena in heliophysics and in astrophysics., Something in textbooks/books has been changed, forever

Although solar activity may significantly impact the global environment and socioeconomic systems, the mechanisms for solar eruptions and the subsequent processes have not yet been fully understood. Thus, modern society supported by advanced information systems is at risk from severe space weather disturbances. Project for solar–terrestrial environment prediction (PSTEP) was launched to improve this situation through synergy between basic science research and operational forecast. The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. By this project, we sought to answer the fundamental questions concerning the solar–terrestrial environment and aimed to build a next-generation space weather forecast system to prepare for severe space weather disasters. The PSTEP consists of four research groups and proposal-based research units. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

The characteristic electron densities, temperatures, and thermal distributions of 1MK active region loops are now fairly well established, but their coronal magnetic field strengths remain undetermined. Here we present measurements from a sample of coronal loops observed by the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on Hinode. We use a recently developed diagnostic technique that involves atomic radiation modeling of the contribution of a magnetically induced transition (MIT) to the Fe X 257.262A spectral line intensity. We find coronal magnetic field strengths in the range of 60--150G. We discuss some aspects of these new results in the context of previous measurements using different spectropolarimetric techniques, and their influence on the derived Alfv\'{e}n speeds and plasma $\beta$ in coronal loops., Comment: To be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

This paper uses linear magnetohydrodynamics to model resonant absorption in coronal plasma with a Cartesian coordinate system. We impose line-tied boundary conditions and tilt the background magnetic field to be oblique to the transition region. Halberstadt & Goedbloed (1993, 1995); Goedbloed& Halberstadt (1994); Arregui et al. (2003) show that line-tied boundary conditions cause their resonant absorption models to produce steep boundary layers/evanescent fast waves. We aim to study the importance of the boundary layers and assess their significance in a solar context. We calculate the solutions in a model where we impose line-tied boundary conditions and compare this with a model where we include the chromosphere instead. Results are calculated analytically and then verified numerically. We show that line-tied boundary conditions can cause the model to overestimate the boundary layers' amplitude significantly. If the fast waves can propagate in the chromosphere, then the line-tied model accurately predicts the boundary layers' amplitude. However, if the fast waves are evanescent, then the boundary layers' size is reduced significantly, and the line-tied model overestimates their amplitude. This leads to the counter-intuitive result that the length scales tangential to the transition region can play an essential role in determining line-tied boundary conditions' validity. The results suggest that line-tied boundary conditions can cause the model to generate unphysically large boundary layers. However, researchers may wish to continue to use them in their models for their simplicity and ability to significantly reduce computation time if they understand and are aware of their flaws., 30 pages 5 figures

Streamers and pseudostreamers structure the corona at the largest scales, as seen in both eclipse and coronagraph white-light images. Their inverted-goblet appearance encloses broad coronal loops at the Sun and tapers to a narrow radial stalk away from the star. The streamer associated with the global solar dipole magnetic field is long-lived, predominantly contains a single arcade of nested loops within it, and separates opposite-polarity interplanetary magnetic fields with the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) anchored at its apex. Pseudostreamers, on the other hand, are transient, enclose double arcades of nested loops, and separate like-polarity fields with a dense plasma sheet. We use numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations to calculate, for the first time, the formation of pseudostreamers in response to photospheric magnetic-field evolution. Convective transport of a minority-polarity flux concentration, initially positioned under one side of a streamer, through the streamer boundary into the adjacent preexisting coronal hole forms the pseudostreamer. Interchange magnetic reconnection at the overlying coronal null point(s) governs the development of the pseudostreamer above—and of a new satellite coronal hole behind—the moving minority polarity. The reconnection dynamics liberate coronal-loop plasma that can escape into the heliosphere along so-called separatrix-web (“S-Web”) arcs, which reach far from the HCS and the solar equatorial plane, and can explain the origin of high-latitude slow solar wind. We describe the implications of our results for in situ and remote-sensing observations of the corona and heliosphere as obtained, most recently, by Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter.

In solar physics, a severe numerical challenge for modern simulations is properly representing a transition region between the million-degree hot corona and a much cooler plasma of about 10000 K (e.g., the upper chromosphere or a prominence). In previous 1D hydrodynamic simulations, the transition region adaptive conduction (TRAC) method has been proven to capture aspects better that are related to mass evaporation and energy exchange. We aim to extend this method to fully multidimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) settings, as required for any realistic application in the solar atmosphere. Because modern MHD simulation tools efficiently exploit parallel supercomputers and can handle automated grid refinement, we design strategies for any-dimensional block grid-adaptive MHD simulations. We propose two different strategies and demonstrate their working with our open-source MPI-AMRVAC code. We benchmark both strategies on 2D prominence formation based on the evaporation--condensation scenario, where chromospheric plasma is evaporated through the transition region and then is collected and ultimately condenses in the corona. A field-line-based TRACL method and a block-based TRACB method are introduced and compared in block grid-adaptive 2D MHD simulations. Both methods yield similar results and are shown to satisfactorily correct the underestimated chromospheric evaporation, which comes from a poor spatial resolution in the transition region. Because fully resolving the transition region in multidimensional MHD settings is virtually impossible, TRACB or TRACL methods will be needed in any 2D or 3D simulations involving transition region physics., Accepted by A&A

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and SolO data are utilized to investigate magnetic field intermittency in the solar wind (SW). Small-scale intermittency (20−100 d i ) is observed to radially strengthen when methods relying on higher-order moments are considered (SF q ; SDK), but no clear trend is observed at larger scales. However, lower-order moment-based methods (e.g., partial variance of increments; PVI) are deemed more appropriate for examining the evolution of the bulk of coherent structures (CSs), PVI ≥ 3. Using PVI, we observe a scale-dependent evolution in the fraction of the data set occupied by CSs, f PVI≥3. Specifically, regardless of the SW speed, a subtle increase is found in f PVI≥3 for ℓ = 20 d i , in contrast to a more pronounced radial increase in CSs observed at larger scales. Intermittency is investigated in relation to plasma parameters. Though, slower SW speed intervals exhibit higher f PVI≥6 and higher kurtosis maxima, no statistical differences are observed for f PVI≥3. Highly Alfvénic intervals display lower levels of intermittency. The anisotropy with respect to the angle between the magnetic field and SW flow, ΘVB is investigated. Intermittency is weaker at ΘVB ≈ 0° and is strengthened at larger angles. Considering the evolution at a constant alignment angle, a weakening of intermittency is observed with increasing advection time of the SW. Our results indicate that the strengthening of intermittency in the inner heliosphere is driven by the increase in comparatively highly intermittent perpendicular intervals sampled by the probes with increasing distance, an effect related directly to the evolution of the Parker spiral.

We derive the non-thermal velocities (NTVs) in the transition region of an active region using the \ion{Si}{4}~1393.78~{\AA} line observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and compare them with the line-of-sight photospheric magnetic fields obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The active region consists of two strong field regions with opposite polarity, separated by a weak field corridor, that widened as the active region evolved. The means of the NTV distributions in strong-field regions (weak field corridors) range between $\sim$18{--}20 (16{--}18)~km~s$^{-1}$, albeit the NTV maps show much larger range. In addition, we identify a narrow lane in the middle of the corridor with significantly reduced NTV. The NTVs do not show a strong center-to-limb variation, albeit somewhat larger values near the disk center. The NTVs are well correlated with redshifts as well as line intensities. The results obtained here and those presented in our companion paper on Doppler shifts suggest two populations of plasma in the active region emitting in \ion{Si}{4}. The first population exists in the strong field regions and extends partway into the weak field corridor between them. We attribute this plasma to spicules heated to $\sim$0.1 MK (often called type II spicules). They have a range of inclinations relative to vertical. The second population exists in the center of the corridor, is relatively faint, and has smaller velocities, likely horizontal. Solar flares are explosive releases of magnetic energy. Hard X-ray (HXR) flare emission originates from both hot (millions of Kelvin) plasma and nonthermal accelerated particles, giving insight into flare energy release. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) utilizes direct-focusing optics to attain much higher sensitivity in the HXR range than that of previous indirect imagers. This paper presents 11 NuSTAR microflares from two active regions (AR 12671 on 2017 August 21 and AR 12712 on 2018 May 29). The temporal, spatial, and energetic properties of each are discussed in context with previously published HXR brightenings. They are seen to display several “large flare” properties, such as impulsive time profiles and earlier peak times in higher-energy HXRs. For two events where the active region background could be removed, microflare emission did not display spatial complexity; differing NuSTAR energy ranges had equivalent emission centroids. Finally, spectral fitting showed a high-energy excess over a single thermal model in all events. This excess was consistent with additional higher-temperature plasma volumes in 10/11 microflares and only with an accelerated particle distribution in the last. Previous NuSTAR studies focused on one or a few microflares at a time, making this the first to collectively examine a sizable number of events. Studying the behavior of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is important for both solar physics and space weather. The correlations of smoothed monthly mean daily integrated CME acceleration [ $a$ ], mass [ $M$ ], and the force [ $Ma$ ] to drive CMEs with sunspot activity [ $R_{\mathrm{I}}$ ] are analyzed for both slow and fast CMEs and for both Solar Cycles 23 and 24 separately. It is found that $a$ is inversely related to both $R_{\mathrm{I}}$ and $M$ . The correlation between $Ma$ and $R_{\mathrm{I}}$ for both slow and fast CMEs is negative at the rising phase of Solar Cycle 23 and positive otherwise. There is a sharp peak in $\gamma =Ma/R_{\mathrm{I}}$ near the solar minimum (December 2008) for both slow and fast CMEs. However, for fast CMEs, there is a sharp negative peak near the previous solar minimum (August 1996) and another positive peak near the current solar minimum (2019). The positive (negative) peak tends to be related to the solar minimum from a stronger (weaker) to a weaker (stronger) solar cycle. These results suggest that the CME acceleration depends more on the strength of solar activity than on the CME’s speed. Stronger magnetic activity may slow down the CMEs that are too massive or too fast and weaker activity may speed up the CMEs that are less massive or too slow. During a few years’ period of magnetic-field polarity reversal around the solar minimum, the force provided by large-scale magnetic-field structures may not be strong enough to constrain CME motions, leading to the “escape” of CMEs with large $|\gamma |$ .

Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) rising buoyantly through the Sun's convection zone are thought to be subject to viscous forces preventing them from rising coherently. Numerous studies have suggested that MFRs require a minimum twist in order to remain coherent during their rise. Furthermore, even MFRs that get to the photosphere may be unable to successfully emerge into the corona unless they are at least moderately twisted, since the magnetic pressure gradient needs to overcome the weight of the photospheric plasma. To date, however, no lower limit has been placed on the critical minimum twist required for an MFR to rise coherently through the convection zone or emerge through the photosphere. In this paper, we simulate an untwisted toroidal MFR which is able to rise from the convection zone and emerge through the photosphere as an active region that resembles those observed on the Sun. We show that untwisted MFRs can remain coherent during their rise and then pile-up near the photosphere, triggering the undular instability, allowing the MFR to emerge through the photosphere. We propose that the toroidal geometry of our MFR is critical for its coherent rise. Upon emerging, a pair of lobes rises into the corona which interact and reconnect, resulting in a localized high speed jet. The resulting photospheric magnetogram displays the characteristic salt-and-pepper structure often seen in observations. Prompted by a recent paper by Dima and Schad, we re-consider the problem of inferring magnetic properties of the corona using polarimetric observations of magnetic dipole (M1) lines. Dima and Schad point to a potential source of degeneracy in a formalism developed by Plowman, which under some circumstances can lead to the solution being under-determined. Here we clarify the nature of the problem. Its resolution lies in solving for the scattering geometry using the elongation of the observed region of the corona. We discuss some conceptual problems that arise when casting the problem for inversion in the observer's reference frame, and satisfactorily resolve difficulties identified by Plowman, Dima and Schad., Comment: 7 pages 1 figure. The recent rediscovery of magnetic field switchbacks or deflections embedded in the solar wind flow by the Parker Solar Probe mission lead to a huge interest in the modeling of the formation mechanisms and origin of these switchbacks. Several scenarios for their generation were put forth, ranging from lower solar atmospheric origins by reconnection, to being a manifestation of turbulence in the solar wind, and so on. Here we study some potential formation mechanisms of magnetic switchbacks in the lower solar atmosphere, using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations. The model is that of an intense flux tube in an open magnetic field region, aiming to represent a magnetic bright point opening up to an open coronal magnetic field structure, e.g., a coronal hole. The model is driven with different plasma flows in the photosphere, such as a fast up-shooting jet, as well as shearing flows generated by vortex motions or torsional oscillations. In all scenarios considered, we witness the formation of magnetic switchbacks in regions corresponding to chromospheric heights. Therefore, photospheric plasma flows around the foot-points of intense flux tubes appear to be suitable drivers for the formation of magnetic switchbacks in the lower solar atmosphere. Nevertheless, these switchbacks do not appear to be able to enter the coronal heights of the simulation in the present model. In conclusion, based on the presented simulations, switchbacks measured in the solar wind are unlikely to originate from photospheric or chromospheric dynamics. © 2021. Solar flares emanate from solar active regions hosting complex and strong bipolar magnetic fluxes. Estimating the probability of an active region to flare and defining reliable precursors of intense flares is an extremely challenging task in the space weather field. In this work, we focus on two metrics as flare precursors, the unsigned flux R, tested on MDI/SOHO data and one of the most used parameters for flare forecasting applications, and a novel topological parameter D representing the complexity of a solar active region. More in detail, we propose an algorithm for the computation of the R value which exploits the higher spatial resolution of HMI maps. This algorithm leads to a differently computed R value, whose functionality is tested on a set of cycle 24th solar flares. Furthermore, we introduce a topological parameter based on the automatic recognition of magnetic polarity-inversion lines in identified active regions, and able to evaluate its magnetic topological complexity. We use both a heuristic approach and a supervised machine learning method to validate the effectiveness of these two descriptors to predict the occurrence of X- or M- class flares in a given solar active region during the following 24 hours period. Our feature ranking analysis shows that both parameters play a significant role in prediction performances. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates that the new topological parameter D is the only one, among 173 overall predictors, which is always present for all test subsets and is systematically ranked within the top-ten positions in all tests concerning the computation of the weighs with which each predictor impacts the flare forecasting., 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted in the Astrophysical Journal

Internetwork (IN) magnetic fields are highly dynamic, short-lived magnetic structures that populate the interior of supergranular cells. Since they emerge all over the Sun, these small-scale fields bring a substantial amount of flux, and therefore energy, to the solar surface. Because of this, IN fields are crucial for understanding the quiet Sun (QS) magnetism. However, they are weak and produce very small polarization signals, which is the reason why their properties and impact on the energetics and dynamics of the solar atmosphere are poorly known. Here we use coordinated, high-resolution, multiwavelength observations obtained with the Swedish 1 m Solar Telescope and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) to follow the evolution of IN magnetic loops as they emerge into the photosphere and reach the chromosphere and transition region. We studied in this paper three flux emergence events having total unsigned magnetic fluxes of 1.9 × 1018, 2.5 × 1018, and 5.3 × 1018 Mx. The footpoints of the emerging IN bipoles are clearly seen to appear in the photosphere and to rise up through the solar atmosphere, as observed in Fe I 6173 A and Mg I b2 5173 A magnetograms, respectively. For the first time, our polarimetric measurements taken in the chromospheric Ca II 8542 A line provide direct observational evidence that IN fields are capable of reaching the chromosphere. Moreover, using IRIS data, we study the effects of these weak fields on the heating of the chromosphere and transition region. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Active regions are thought to be one contributor to the slow solar wind. Upflows in EUV coronal spectral lines are routinely osberved at their boundaries, and provide the most direct way for upflowing material to escape into the heliosphere. The mechanisms that form and drive these upflows, however, remain to be fully characterised. It is unclear how quickly they form, or how long they exist during their lifetimes. They could be initiated low in the atmosphere during magnetic flux emergence, or as a response to processes occuring high in the corona when the active region is fully developed. On 2019, March 31, a simple bipolar active region (AR 12737) emerged and upflows developed on each side. We used observations from Hinode, SDO, IRIS, and Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to investigate the formation and development of the upflows from the eastern side. We used the spectroscopic data to detect the upflow, and then used the imaging data to try to trace its signature back to earlier in the active region emergence phase. We find that the upflow forms quickly, low down in the atmosphere, and that its initiation appears associated with a small field-opening eruption and the onset of a radio noise storm detected by PSP. We also confirmed that the upflows existed for the vast majority of the time the active region was observed. We present the first Fermi - Large Area Telescope (LAT) solar flare catalog covering the 24 th solar cycle. This catalog contains 45 Fermi -LAT solar flares (FLSFs) with emission in the gamma-ray energy band (30 MeV - 10 GeV) detected with a significance greater than 5 sigma over the years 2010-2018. A subsample containing 37 of these flares exhibit delayed emission beyond the prompt-impulsive hard X-ray phase with 21 flares showing delayed emission lasting more than two hours. No prompt-impulsive emission is detected in four of these flares. We also present in this catalog the observations of GeV emission from 3 flares originating from Active Regions located behind the limb (BTL) of the visible solar disk. We report the light curves, spectra, best proton index and localization (when possible) for all the FLSFs. The gamma-ray spectra is consistent with the decay of pions produced by >300 MeV protons. This work contains the largest sample of high-energy gamma-ray flares ever reported and provides the unique opportunity to perform population studies on the different phases of the flare and thus allowing to open a new window in solar physics.

We present observations of the solar chromosphere obtained simultaneously with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The observatories targeted a chromospheric plage region of which the spatial distribution (split between strongly and weakly magnetized regions) allowed the study of linear-like structures in isolation, free of contamination from background emission. Using these observations in conjunction with a radiative magnetohydrodynamic 2.5D model covering the upper convection zone all the way to the corona that considers non-equilibrium ionization effects, we report the detection of an on-disk chromospheric spicule with ALMA and confirm its multithermal nature., 29 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. Stable long-period cycles found in proxies of solar activity have given new momentum to the debate about a possible influence of the tiny planetary tidal forcing. Here, we study the solar cycle by means of a simple zero-dimensional dynamo model, which includes a delay caused by meridional circulation as well as a quenching of the α-effect at toroidal magnetic fields exceeding an upper threshold. Fitting this model to the sunspot record, we find a set of parameters close to the bifurcation point at which two stable oscillatory modes emerge. One mode is a limit cycle resembling normal solar activity including a characteristic kink in the decaying limb of the cycle. The other mode is a weak sub-threshold cycle that could be interpreted as Grand Minimum activity. Adding noise to the model, we show that it exhibits Stochastic Resonance, which means that a weak external modulation can toss the dynamo back and forth between these two modes, whereby the periodicities of the modulation get strongly amplified. © 2021. Angelo Secchi (1818–1878) was an Italian Jesuit who made relevant scientific contributions in geophysics, meteorology, and astrophysics. He was a well-known pioneer in solar physics due to his theories and observations. Secchi published Le Soleil (The Sun) a summary of knowledge about our star in that time. Moreover, he published in this book his sunspot and prominence observations made during the period 1871–1875. In this work, we present a machine-readable version of these observations and a preliminary analysis of them.

In this paper, we study kink and sausage oscillations in the presence of longitudinal background flow. We study the resonance absorption of kink and sausage modes in the slow continuum, under magnetic pore conditions, in the presence of flow. We determine the dispersion relation, and solve it numerically to find the frequencies and damping rates of the slow kink and sausage surface modes. We also obtain an analytical solution for the damping rate of the slow surface mode in the long wavelength limit. We show that in the presence of plasma flow, resonance absorption can result in strong damping for forward waves, and can be considered as an efficient mechanism to justify the extremely rapid damping of slow surface sausage waves observed in magnetic pores. Moreover, the plasma flow reduces the efficiency of resonance absorption to damp backward waves. With respect to pore conditions, resonance instability is avoided in our model.

The long-term evolution of the Sun's rotation period cannot be directly observed, and is instead inferred from trends in the measured rotation periods of other Sun-like stars. Assuming the Sun spins-down as it ages, following rotation rate $\propto$ age$^{-1/2}$, requires the current solar angular momentum-loss rate to be around $6\times 10^{30}$erg. Magnetohydrodynamic models, and previous observations of the solar wind (from the Helios and Wind spacecraft), generally predict a values closer to $1\times 10^{30}$erg or $3\times 10^{30}$erg, respectively. Recently, the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed tangential solar wind speeds as high as $\sim50$km/s in a localized region of the inner heliosphere. If such rotational flows were prevalent throughout the corona, it would imply that the solar wind angular momentum-loss rate is an order of magnitude larger than all of those previous estimations. In this letter, we evaluate the angular momentum flux in the solar wind, using data from the first two orbits of PSP. The solar wind is observed to contain both large positive (as seen during perihelion), and negative angular momentum fluxes. We analyse two solar wind streams that were repeatedly traversed by PSP; the first is a slow wind stream whose average angular momentum flux fluctuates between positive to negative, and the second is an intermediate speed stream containing a positive angular momentum flux (more consistent with a constant flow of angular momentum). When the data from PSP is evaluated holistically, the average equatorial angular momentum flux implies a global angular momentum-loss rate of around $2.6-4.2\times 10^{30}$ erg (which is more consistent with observations from previous spacecraft)., Comment: 11 pages + 6 figures, accepted for publication to ApJL

A polytropic process describes the transition of a fluid from one state to another through a specific relationship between the fluid density and temperature. The value of the polytropic index that governs this relationship determines the heat transfer and the effective degrees of freedom during the process. In this study, we analyze solar wind proton plasma measurements, obtained by the Faraday cup instrument on-board Parker Solar Probe. We examine the large-scale variations of the proton plasma density and temperature within the inner heliosphere explored by the spacecraft. We also address a polytropic behavior in the density and temperature fluctuations in short-time intervals, which we analyze in order to derive the effective polytropic index of small time-scale processes. The large-scale variations of the solar wind proton density and temperature which are associated with the plasma expansion through the heliosphere, follow a polytropic model with a polytropic index ~5/3. On the other hand, the short time-scale fluctuations which may be associated with turbulence, follow a model with a larger polytropic index. We investigate possible correlations between the polytropic index of short time-scale fluctuations and the plasma speed, plasma beta, and the magnetic field direction. We discuss the scenario of mechanisms including energy transfer or mechanisms that restrict the particle effective degrees of freedom., 20 pages, 9 figures

On 2019 May 6, the Lunar Lander Neutron & Dosimetry (LND) Experiment on board the Chang'E-4 on the far-side of the Moon detected its first small solar energetic particle (SEP) event with proton energies up to 21MeV. Combined proton energy spectra are studied based on the LND, SOHO/EPHIN and ACE/EPAM measurements which show that LND could provide a complementary dataset from a special location on the Moon, contributing to our existing observations and understanding of space environment. Velocity dispersion analysis (VDA) has been applied to the impulsive electron event and weak proton enhancement and the results demonstrate that electrons are released only 22 minutes after the flare onset and $\sim$15 minutes after type II radio burst, while protons are released more than one hour after the electron release. The impulsive enhancement of the in-situ electrons and the derived early release time indicate a good magnetic connection between the source and Earth. However, stereoscopic remote-sensing observations from Earth and STA suggest that the SEPs are associated with an active region nearly 100$^\circ$ away from the magnetic footpoint of Earth. This suggests that the propagation of these SEPs could not follow a nominal Parker spiral under the ballistic mapping model and the release and propagation mechanism of electrons and protons are likely to differ significantly during this event., ApJ Letter

The study of solar coronal holes (CHs) is important in the understanding of solar physics and the prediction of space weather events, which have significant impact on space-based instruments, communication and navigation systems. With the availability of the multi-wavelength Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite, a large volume of high-resolution solar images are produced continuously. Proper detection of CHs from AIA images is an important issue and recently, a few contour and machine learning-based techniques are found to be promising for such purpose. However, accuracy, time complexity and the requirement of human intervention are some of the critical issues with such methods. In this paper, to address these challenging issues, two contour-based approaches are developed, namely i) the Hough transformed simulated parameterized online region-based active contour method (POR-ACM) and ii) fast fuzzy c-means clustering followed by Hough transformed simulated static contour method (FFCM-SCM). The major issues that are addressed here are automated initialization of contour, reducing time complexity and avoidance of non-coronal hole inside a coronal hole region during contour evolution. The proposed techniques have been tested on three benchmark solar disk images and compared with the existing active contour without edge- (ACWE) based method and fuzzy energy-based dual contour method (FEDCM) of CHs segmentation. The results indicate the capability of the proposed techniques in detection and extraction of CHs in solar disk image with higher accuracy and reduced time complexity.

As one of the most common features in the solar atmosphere, filaments are significant not only in the solar physics but also in the stellar and laboratory plasma physics. With the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, here we report on multi-wavelength observations of eruptions of a small (30\arcsec) filament (SF) and its consequences while interacting with the ambient magnetic features including a large (300\arcsec) filament (LF). The eruptions of the SF drive a two-side-loop jet that is a result of magnetic reconnection between the SF threads and an over-lying magnetic channel. As a consequence of the eruption, the heating in the footpoints of the SF destabilises the barbs of the LF rooted nearby. Supersonic chromospheric plasma flows along the barbs of the LF are then observed in the \halpha\ passband and they apparently feed materials to the LF. We suggest they are shock-driven plasma flows or chromospheric evaporations, which both can be the consequences of the heating in the chromosphere by nonthermal particles generated in the magnetic reconnection associated with the two-side-loop jet. We have compiled a catalog of solar flares as observed by the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft and the GOES spacecraft over a span from 1997 to 2010. During mid-1998, the cadence of EIT images was revised from two images per day to 12 minutes. However, the low temporal resolution causes significant data gaps in capturing much of the flaring phenomenon. Therefore, we monitor possible errors in flare detection by flare parameters such as temporal overlap, observational wavelength, and considering full field of view (FOV) images. We consider the GOES flare catalog as the primary source. We describe the technique used to enhance the GOES detected flares using the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) image captured by the EIT instrument. In order to detect brightenings, we subtract the images with a maximum cadence of 25 minutes. We have downloaded and analyzed the EIT data via the Virtual Solar Observatory (VSO). This flare dataset from the SOHO/EIT period proves indispensable to the process of the solar flare predictions as the instrument has covered most of Solar Cycle 23., 11 pages, 6 figures

The SDO/HMI data with an angular resolution of 1 arcsec have been used to explore the differential rotation on the Sun, using an original “p2p” effect on the basis of the movement of small-scale magnetic structures in the photosphere of the Sun. It is shown that a stable p2p artifact inherent in the SDO/HMI data can be an effective tool for measuring the speed of various tracers on the Sun. In particular, in combination with the Fourier analysis, it allows us to investigate the differential rotation of the Sun at various latitudes. The differential rotation curve obtained from the SDO/HMI magnetograms by this method is in good agreement with the curves obtained earlier from ground-based observations.

Coronal bright points (CBPs) are a fundamental class of solar activity. They represent a set of low-corona small-scale loops with enhanced emission in the extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray spectrum that connect magnetic flux concentrations of opposite polarities. CBPs are one of the main building blocks of the solar atmosphere outside active regions uniformly populating the solar atmosphere including active region latitudes and coronal holes. Their plasma properties classify them as downscaled active regions. Most importantly, their simple structure and short lifetimes of less than 20 h that allow to follow their full lifetime evolution present a unique opportunity to investigate outstanding questions in solar physics including coronal heating. The present Living Review is the first review of this essential class of solar phenomena and aims to give an overview of the current knowledge about the CBP general, plasma and magnetic properties. Several transient dynamic phenomena associated with CBPs are also briefly introduced. The observationally derived energetics and the theoretical modelling that aims at explaining the CBP formation and eruptive behaviour are reviewed.

Indications are presented for a significant connection between the relative motion of the planets and the appearance of energetic solar flares. Based on the records of the last four decades, the analysis highlights remarkable features and a lack of randomness in the data. The indications are supported further by the predictive power of a preliminary application to forecasting with machine learning methods., 10 pages, 8 figures

It is generally accepted that extreme space weather events tend to be related to strong flares and fast halo coronal mass ejections CMEs. In the present paper, we carefully identify the chain of events from the Sun to the Earth induced by all 12 X-class flares that occurred in 2002. In this small sample, we find an unusual high rate (58\%) of solar sources with a longitude larger than 74 degrees. Yet, all 12 X-class flares are associated with at least one CME. The fast halo CMEs (50\% ) are related to interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs) at L1 and weak Dst minimum values ($> -51\;$nT); while 5 (41\%) of the 12 X-class flares are related to solar proton events (SPE). We conclude that: (i) All twelve analyzed solar events, even those associated with fast halo CMEs originating from the central disk region, and those ICMEs and SPEs were not very geo-effective. This unexpected result demonstrates that the suggested events in the chain (fast halo CME, X-class flares, central disk region, ICME, SPE) are not infallible proxies for geo-effectiveness. (ii) The low value of integrated and normalized southward component of the IMF ($B^*_z$) may explain the low geo-effectiveness for this small sample. In fact, $B^*_z$ is well correlated to the weak Dst and low auroral electrojet (AE) activity. Hence, the only space weather impact at Earth in 2002 we can explain is based on $B^*_z$ at L1., 33 pages, 12 figures

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the largest radio telescope ever built, aiming to provide collecting area larger than 1 km$^2$. The SKA will have two independent instruments, SKA-LOW comprising of dipoles organized as aperture arrays in Australia and SKA-MID comprising of dishes in South Africa. Currently the phase-1 of SKA, referred to as SKA1, is in its late design stage and construction is expected to start in 2020. Both SKA1-LOW (frequency range of 50-350 MHz) and SKA1-MID Bands 1, 2, and 5 (frequency ranges of 350-1050, 950-1760, and 4600-15300 MHz, respectively) are important for solar observations. In this paper we present SKA's unique capabilities in terms of spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution, as well as sensitivity and show that they have the potential to provide major new insights in solar physics topics of capital importance including (i) the structure and evolution of the solar corona, (ii) coronal heating, (iii) solar flare dynamics including particle acceleration and transport, (iv) the dynamics and structure of coronal mass ejections, and (v) the solar aspects of space weather. Observations of the Sun jointly with the new generation of ground-based and space-borne instruments promise unprecedented discoveries., Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research
