Abstract

We investigated the space charge behavior near the interface between different low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Charge carriers were mainly injected from the semiconductive electrode in a specimen of Al/LDPE/LDPE/semiconductive layer and they moved through the interface to the counter Al electrode. Charge carriers moving from a lower density LDPE to a higher density one were accumulated near the interface to form space charge, while there was no space charge accumulation for carriers moving in the opposite direction. The mobilities of charge carriers were estimated from the change in space charge profile with time. Charge carriers are more mobile in the lower density LDPE than in the higher density one. Positive carriers were more mobile in LDPE than negative ones. The interface between different LDPE's greatly affected space charge behavior and discharging currents.

Abstract

Electrical breakdown of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) films, one of the high-temperature engineering plastics, has been investigated. The results show that the dc breakdown strength is lower than the impulse one, and that the difference in electric strength between de and impulse becomes wider as the sample thickness decreases. The result suggests space-charge accumulation when dc voltage is applied. Further, the impulse breakdown strength in the presence of a dc prestressing voltage is measured in order to elucidate the space- charge effect. The data on the contribution of the prestress voltage to electrical breakdown are used to estimate the amount of space charge accumulated in the specimen during the dc prestressing. Abstract

In this study, the space charge behaviors of the blend polymers of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene copolymer were investigated by the pulsed electro-acoustic method (PEA) with the electrode system of aluminium/specimen/semiconductive layer. The blend specimen composed by 90 wt% LDPE and 10 wt% polypropylene copolymer (B10) showed a larger amount of space charge than pure LDPE (PE) under a DC field of 50 MV m−1 at both 30 and 60 °C. Positive carriers moved more slowly in B10 than in PE under a positive DC voltage applied to the semiconductive electrode at 30 °C. DC currents were also measured under the same experimental condition as the space charge measurement. The DC current of B10 was lower than that of PE at 30 °C, but higher at 60 °C.
