A new species of deep-sea shrimp, Bathypalaemonella liui sp. nov., is described from the seamount of the South China Sea at a depth of 759–1117 m. Bathypalaemonella liui sp. nov. is most similar to B. hayashi Komai, 1995 and B. serratipalma Pequegnat, 1970 for the flexor margin of the major second pereopod bearing a row of tubercles. Important morphological characters which differentiate the present new species from B. hayashi and B. serratipalma are the length of the rostrum, which is far exceeding the scaphocerite, and the dactylus of the posterior three pereopods, which only bear one pair of accessory spines. Moreover, the genetic divergences of the COI and 16S rRNA genes from these two congeners analysed, clearly support the new taxon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species of Eusiridae, Eusirus liui sp. nov. is described from a hydrothermal vent on Okinawa Trough, North-West Pacific. The new species differs from the other 30 congeneric species mainly by the following combination of characters: the acute rostrum reaching to 1/3 the length of peduncular article 1 of antenna 1; the absence of eyes; pleonite 3 without acute protrusion on dorsal margin, and the posterior margin of epimeron 3 with 18 serrations. A key to all known Eusirus species is provided herein. This is the fourth species within the Eusiridae that has been found from vent fields. La nouvelle espèce diffère des 30 autres espèces congénères surtout par la combinaison des caractères suivants : un rostre aigu atteignant le 1/3 de la longueur de l'article pédonculaire de l'antenne I ; l'absence d'yeux ; le pléonite 3 sans protrusion aigüe sur son bord dorsal, et le bord postérieur de l'épimère 3 avec 18 dentelures. Unlike many crop seeds which are large in size, forage seeds are relatively small. Moreover, some forage seeds from the same genus, or even different genera, share similar morphologies in terms of colour, size, weight and so on. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and burr medic (Medicago polymorpha L.) also share similar morphology. However, alfalfa is a perennial, cross‐pollinated herbaceous species, whereas burr medic is considered an annual, self‐pollinating plant. Therefore, a universal and rapid method of discriminating burr medic seeds from alfalfa seeds or other similar forage seeds from different plant species is needed. Previous methods of discriminating similar‐looking forage seeds have been shown to be unreliable or time consuming. Here, a universal method that combines polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis techniques was developed to discriminate alfalfa and burr medic. Based on the differences in the lengths of homologous genes caused by insertions and deletions between two species, a pair of primers was designed to discriminate the accessions of 15 alfalfa and 9 burr medic via visualizing the clearly different PCR amplicon sizes. In addition, the melting curve analysis was performed to investigate the specificity and reliability of the primer pair. The results showed two different melting peaks between the two species, further demonstrating this method can accurately and sensitively identify the two species. Thus, we believe that this method has the great potential to be extensively applied for the identification of contaminated seeds and breeding of forages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species of the caridean family Thoridae, Lebbeus liui sp. nov., is described from the Bohai Sea, China. It belongs to the group characterized by the presence of epipods on the third maxilliped to third pereiopod. The new species is most similar to L. fasciatus and L. speciosus. It differs from the above two species by the number of the dorsal teeth and the spacing of those on the rostrum, and by the posterior median margin of the telson not produced into a triangular tooth. Elle appartient au groupe caractérisé par la présence d'épipodites sur le troisième maxillipède et jusqu'au troisième péréiopode. La nouvelle espèce est la plus proche de L. fasciatus et de L. speciosus. Elle diffère de ces deux espèces par le nombre de dents dorsales et l'espacement de celles situées sur le rostre, et par le bord médian postérieur du telson non prolongé en une dent triangulaire. A new species of Stegocephalidae, Parandania unicoxae sp. nov., is reported from hydrothermal vents in the Okinawa Trough. It is the fourth species described in the genus Parandania Stebbing, 1899. The new species is most similar to P. boecki (Stebbing, 1888), but it can be readily distinguished from P. boecki by the unilobate coxae 6-7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During two expeditions to Caroline Plate seamounts and Zhenbei seamount in the NW Pacific, three Paralebbeus (we list Paralebbeus as a synonym of Lebbeus herein) specimens are sampled. Two of them are recognized as new to science herein after carefully morphological observations. L. cultrirostris sp. nov. collected with the keratoisidid coral at a depth of 866 m is characterized by the smooth rostrum, and the telson having three pairs of dorsolateral spines. L. kexuei sp. nov. collected at a depth of 796–1510 m is characterized by the rostrum only bearing two dorsal spines, and the carpus of pereopod 2 having two articles equal in length. Morphological characters and generic analysis of mitochondrial COI and 16 S rRNA genes using maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and pairwise uncorrected p-distances indicated that all species of Paralebbeus Bruce and Chace (1986 should be transferred into genus Lebbeus White, 1847. • Two new species were described. • The validity of Paralebbeus was examined. • Paralebbeus should be synonymized with Lebbeus.
