Summary: One of the basic tools to quantify biodiversity is based on the use of surrogate species. Such groups of species are easily assessed and may reflect the diversity of other important and less easily detectable taxa (cross-taxon surrogacy). Among these key groups of species, the vascular plant flora has great potential in determining diversity of other groups, since in terrestrial ecosystems it constitutes the bulk of total biomass and provides the physical structure for other organisms. The cross-taxon congruence of species diversity (species richness and species composition) among vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, fungi, oligochaetes, butterflies and birds was investigated with special attention to testing the potential role of vegetation as surrogate for the other studied taxa. The 271ha Nature Reserve “Bosco di S. Agnese” (Tuscany, Italy) characterised by evergreen Mediterranean woodlands, scrublands, garigues, xeric grasslands and cultivations was used as study area. A multi-scale sampling design, based on a restricted random selection of plots, was used to get information about vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, fungi, oligochaetes, butterflies and birds. The congruence in species richness and composition among the different taxa was tested by Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Most of the pair-wise comparisons showed weak and statistically not significant correlations for both species richness and compositional data, indicating a limited cross-taxon congruence. Species richness of vascular plants was significantly correlated only to that of birds and butterflies. Compositional patterns were congruent only between vascular plants and butterflies. The results of this study indicated that neither vascular plants nor any other taxonomic group is a valid surrogate in this nature reserve. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The results of a floristic survey in six forests owned and managed by the regional administration of Tuscany are reported in this paper. These forests are undergoing a monitoring program, which includes biodiversity as one of the status indicators. Vascular plants are used as indicator species group to quantify biodiversity and they are assessed by means of quantitative floristics. This approach involves the collection of floristic information on the basis of a sampling design. Floristic and structural data were collected in 109 plots, each 400m
2 large, and analysed at both the plot and forest scales. At the plot scale, species richness was found to be unimodally related to elevation and negatively related to tree stem density and total basal area. At the forest scale, the six forests differed in their patterns of species accumulation, with the highest number of species for a given number of sites sampled observed in the intermediate elevation forests. The analysis of the life-form spectrum showed, for both the plot and forest scales, a decreasing importance of the relative abundance of phanerophytes and an increasing importance of the relative abundance of hemicriptophytes in relation to elevation. The use of the approach adopted for future monitoring is also discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

© 2021 The Authors., Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. Both local and regional predictors play a role in determining plant community structure and composition. Climate, soil eatures as well as different local history and management affect forest understorey and tree species composition, but to date their specific role is relatively unknown. Few studies have addressed the importance of these predictors, especially in the Mediterranean area, where environmental conditions and human impacts have generated heterogeneous forest communities. In this study, the relationships between environmental variables and species richness of different groups of vascular plants (vascular species, woody species and open habitat species) and bryophytes were investigated in Tuscan. orests. A total of 37 environmental variables were used by generalised linear model fitting in order to find parsimonious sub- sets of environmental factors (predictors) that are able to explain species diversity patterns at the local scale. Moreover, the role of regional and local variable groups on species richness of the considered plant groups was estimated by using the variance partitioning approach. We found that local variables, such as forest management and structure, explained more variance than regional variables for total species richness, open habitat species richness and bryophyte species richness. On the other hand, regional variables (such as elevation) played a central role for woody species richness.

Summary One of the basic tools to quantify biodiversity is based on the use of surrogate species. Such groups of species are easily assessed and may reflect the diversity of other important and less easily detectable taxa (cross-taxon surrogacy). Among these key groups of species, the vascular plant flora has great potential in determining diversity of other groups, since in terrestrial ecosystems it constitutes the bulk of total biomass and provides the physical structure for other organisms. The cross-taxon congruence of species diversity (species richness and species composition) among vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, fungi, oligochaetes, butterflies and birds was investigated with special attention to testing the potential role of vegetation as surrogate for the other studied taxa. The 271 ha Nature Reserve “Bosco di S. Agnese” (Tuscany, Italy) characterised by evergreen Mediterranean woodlands, scrublands, garigues, xeric grasslands and cultivations was used as study area. A multi-scale sampling design, based on a restricted random selection of plots, was used to get information about vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, fungi, oligochaetes, butterflies and birds. The congruence in species richness and composition among the different taxa was tested by Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Most of the pair-wise comparisons showed weak and statistically not significant correlations for both species richness and compositional data, indicating a limited cross-taxon congruence. Species richness of vascular plants was significantly correlated only to that of birds and butterflies. Compositional patterns were congruent only between vascular plants and butterflies. The results of this study indicated that neither vascular plants nor any other taxonomic group is a valid surrogate in this nature reserve.

The effects of the chemical and physical factors associated with geothermal activity on plant community structure and composition were investigated in one of the largest geothermal fields of central Italy. The study site was located in the geothermal area of Sasso Pisano GÇô Monte Rotondo Marittimo, Southern Tuscany. The percentage cover of all vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen species was estimated within 119 circular plots of 0.25 m2. For each plot the soil pH, soil temperature, slope, aspect, incident radiation, soil nitrogen and carbon contents were also quantified. Two vascular plants, Calluna vulgaris and Agrostis castellana, were found to be the most widespread species tolerating the harshest conditions in terms of low soil pH and high soil temperature. The most widespread cryptogam species was Hypnum cupressiforme. Spatially autoregressive models showed that a proportion of about 41GÇô51% of the variance in species richness of one group of plants (vascular or cryptogamic plants) could be modelled by using three or four uncorrelated environmental factors respectively (soil temperature, soil nitrogen and soil C/N ratio and these three plus incident radiation). For the total number of species (vascular and cryptogamic plants), the variance explained by the same three uncorrelated variables was about 57%. This study evidenced a strong environmental control of community composition and species richness, in a site subjected to extreme soil values of soil pH and temperature. The dominance of vascular over cryptogamic vegetation in this geothermal site can be explained by the combined effects of geothermal stress (low soil pH and high soil temperature) with the summer drought typical of the Mediterranean climate

8. Quantitative floristics as a tool for the assessment of plant diversity in Tuscan forests

The results of a floristic survey in six forests owned and managed by the regional administration of Tuscany are reported in this paper. These forests are undergoing a monitoring program, which includes biodiversity as one of the status indicators. Vascular plants are used as indicator species group to quantify biodiversity and they are assessed by means of quantitative floristics. This approach involves the collection of floristic information on the basis of a sampling design. Floristic and structural data were collected in 109 plots, each 400 m2 large, and analysed at both the plot and forest scales. At the plot scale, species richness was found to be unimodally related to elevation and negatively related to tree stem density and total basal area. At the forest scale, the six forests differed in their patterns of species accumulation, with the highest number of species for a given number of sites sampled observed in the intermediate elevation forests. The analysis of the life-form spectrum showed, for both the plot and forest scales, a decreasing importance of the relative abundance of phanerophytes and an increasing importance of the relative abundance of hemicriptophytes in relation to elevation. The use of the approach adopted for future monitoring is also discussed.
