The rotational dynamics of HCl in liquid Ar has been studied by means of molecular-dynamics simulations. We calculate the lifetimes of weakly bound HCl–Ar dimers induced by the anisotropic pair interaction. It is shown that, although lifetimes are small with respect to the reorientational decorrelation, the time interval between the breaking down and formation of the next dimer is negligibly small. Thus, with respect to the rotational dynamics of the probe, the effect is similar to that and eventually would cause a time-stable complex. This provokes a peculiar hindered rotation of the diatomic in the liquid which is macroscopically embodied in the infrared spectrum of the solution as a Q-branch nonexistent otherwise. Molecular dynamics simulations of the infrared spectrum of a generic simple polar diatomic in a liquid nonpolar solvent allow to reproduce the different prototypical experimental line shapes of this kind of systems. This is feasible by using different solute-solvent anisotropic potentials at fixed thermodynamic conditions. In the limit cases, the rotation of the diatomic is explained in terms of a quasifree motion or a rotational diffusion evolution and the spectra show a doublet structure formed by P and R branches or a unique collapsed branch, respectively. When the profile contains three branches, including an intense Q branch in the vicinity of the center of the hand, rotational evolution presents a particular hindering that can be understood by studying the influence on rotational spectral densities of the different time scales involved in rotational relaxation. Cancellation/enhancement effects among spectral density terms arising from intermediate and long times (0.4 -1 ps) are essential to understand rotational hindering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A model consisting in a quantum rigid rotor interacting with a quasiharmonic medium is presented to obtain the far-infrared spectra of diatomic polar molecules dissolved in rare-gas liquids. The absorption coefficient is calculated within the framework of two non-Markovian approaches called TTOC (total time ordered cumulants) and PTOC (partial time ordered cumulants). Both non-Markovian spectra contain the same correlation functions of the diatomic–medium interaction, which is expressed in terms of a Legendre polynomial series truncated up to second order. These correlation functions are calculated in paper II. The absorption cofficients appear as a sum of two spectral contributions. The first one, called secular contribution, is given as a juxtaposition of basic resonances, different in each of two non-Markovian approaches, associated to the absorption lines j→j+1. The second one, called interference contribution, takes into account the existence of a overlapping line effect. In paper I, the theoretical TTOC and PTOC far-infrared absorption coefficients of diatomic polar molecules in rare-gas liquid have been expressed in terms of correlation functions of the Hamiltonian which describes the diatomic–medium interaction. In this paper these correlation functions are derived using a harmonic model for the liquid structure which takes into account some peculiarities such as dynamical behavior and geometrical arrangement of atoms in the liquid. The correlation functions and the different spectral contributions which appear in the spectral theory of paper I are numerically analyzed for a HCl–Ar solution. A theoretical model for the infrared (0–1) band of dilute solutions of diatomic polar molecules in nonpolar rare-gas liquids is presented. The model is based on decomposition of the rotational motion of the diatomic molecule into two limiting cases, according to the Bratos model: quasifree rotation and rotational diffusion. Contribution to the infrared absorption coefficient due to quasifree rotation is analyzed within a non-Markovian formalism using a stochastic directing intermolecular field (DIF) model to describe the diatomic molecule–solvent interaction. The P and R branches appear as a consequence of the quasifree contribution, which is also important in the Q-branch region. We present a spectral theory for the far-infrared absorption spectrum of a very diluted solution of diatomic molecules in a rare-gas fluid, that includes permanent and induced contributions. The absorption coefficient is given as the convolution of a translational spectrum and a rotational spectrum. The former is described in terms of time correlation functions associated to the induced dipole moment. The latter is discussed on the basis of a model consisting of a quantum rigid rotor interacting with a thermal bath, making use of time correlation functions associated to the different anisotropic orders of the solute–solvent intermolecular potential. The sound wave in a cylindrical steel bar, generated by a light tap on one of its ends, is recorded by a microphone located near the other end. A sound analysis software is used to obtain the resonance spectrum of the bar. Longitudinal and flexural vibration frequencies are obtained from the peaks of the spectrum.
