Kleptoparasitism is assumed to be the main foraging strategy in some animal groups, such as the spiders of the subfamily Argyrodinae (Theridiidae). However, some species may also feed on silk threads, egg sacs, or even their hosts. The conditions determining these alternative foraging tactics remain unknown for most species. We performed field observations, stable isotope analysis and laboratory experiments to investigate kleptoparasitism and araneophagy of Argyrodes elevatus and Faiditus caudatus in webs of Manogea porracea (Araneidae). We evaluated the following hypotheses: (1) both species exhibit higher trophic positions than their hosts and closest to an araneophagic sympatric species; (2) host web selection is influenced by the presence of alternative resources (adult male and female, and egg sacs); and (3) they preferentially consume egg sacs instead of stored prey items. Both argyrodines showed higher trophic positions than their female hosts and closest to an araneophagic spider species. The invaders were found mainly on host webs with one adult and egg sacs and with egg sacs only. Finally, A. elevatus preferred to feed on prey captured by the host spider instead of egg sacs. A generalist predator's ability to contribute to biological control is influenced by the decisions it makes during foraging. Predators often use flexible foraging tactics, which allows them to pursue specific types of prey at the cost of reducing the likelihood of capturing other types of prey. When a pest insect has low nutritional quality or palatability for a predator, the predator is likely to reject that prey in favour of pursuing alternative, non-pest prey. This is often thought to limit the effectiveness of generalist predators in consuming aphids, which are of low nutritional quality for many generalist predators. Here, we report behavioural assays that test the hypothesis that the generalist predator, Grammonota inornata (Araneae: Linyphiidae), preferentially forages for a non-pest prey with high nutritional quality (springtails), and rejects a pest prey with low nutritional quality (aphids). In no-choice assays, molecular gut-content analysis revealed that spiders continued to feed on the low-quality aphids at high rates, even when high-quality springtails were readily available. When provided a choice between aphids and springtails in two-way choice tests, spiders did not show the expected preference for springtails. Decision-making by spiders during foraging therefore appears to be sub-optimal, possibly because of attraction to the less frequently encountered of two preys as part of a dietary diversification strategy. These results indicate that behavioural preferences alone do not necessarily compromise the pest-suppression capacity of natural enemies: even nutritionally sub-optimal pest prey can potentially be subject to predation and suppression by natural enemies.

Predators can provide a valuable ecosystem service by suppressing crop pests. However, intraguild predation, where predators compete for the same prey resource whilst consuming each other, may destabilize population dynamics and increase the risk of pest outbreaks. Very little is known about intraguild predation in open fields or the strengths of trophic links between predators which may negatively affect pest control., We tested the null hypothesis that predation by the epigeal predator Pterostichus melanarius (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on different spiders is species-independent (proportional to density). A combination of population monitoring in winter wheat, molecular identification of juvenile spiders, molecular analysis of predator gut contents and a Monte Carlo simulation model were used to analyse prey choice., Pterostichus melanarius were pitfall-trapped over three months, and 622 individuals were screened for the remains of four spider species. Predation rates on spiders were 43·6% in June and 33·3% in August and showed clear evidence of prey choice., Predation on the web-dependent Tenuiphantes tenuis (Linyphiidae) was significantly greater than predicted from a random choice model, while predation on Bathyphantes gracilis (Linyphiidae) was significantly lower. The beetles may be selecting the most abundant species disproportionately (switching) or responding in some cases to spatial niche separation ( T. tenuis locate their webs marginally lower than B. gracilis). However, two itinerant hunters, Erigone spp. (Linyphiidae) and Pachygnatha degeeri (Tetragnathidae), were consumed in proportion to their density., Synthesis and applications. High levels of intraguild predation were revealed using molecular diagnostics. The gut analysis approach provided invaluable data that will inform the future design of appropriate pest management and integrated farming strategies that encourage these predators. The data showed strong evidence of prey choice. Managers can, however, probably encourage high densities of all these known aphid predators (spiders and carabids) because disproportionately high rates of predation on the most common spiders at our field sites ( T. tenuis) were not sufficient to prevent strong growth in the density of this species between June and August (adults increased × 1·6 and juveniles × 8·6). What to attack is one of the most basic decisions predators must make, and these decisions are reliant upon the predator's sensory and cognitive capacity. Active choice of spiders as preferred prey, or araneophagy, has evolved in several distantly related spider families, including jumping spiders (Salticidae), but has never been demonstrated in ant-like jumping spiders. We used prey-choice tests with motionless lures to investigate prey-choice behaviour in Myrmarachne melanotarsa, an East African ant-like salticid that normally lives in aggregations and often associates with other spider species. We show that M. melanotarsa chooses spiders as prey in preference to insects and, furthermore, discriminates between different types of spiders. Myrmarachne melanotarsa's preferred prey were juvenile hersiliids and its second most preferred were other salticids. To date, all documented examples of araneophagic salticids have been from the basal subfamily Spartaeinae. I examined prey choice of the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa Gertsch & Mulaik 1940) with reference to unusual scavenging behavior originally reported by Sandidge (2003). Because scavenging is an unexpected behavior in normally predatory spiders, I hypothesized that special circumstances must converge for the brown recluse to prefer dead prey over live prey. I offered crickets (Acheta domesticus) to brown recluses in several choice experiments. I varied predator satiation (spiders not fed for two or four weeks), prey size (small or large), and prey quality (live. fresh dead, dead 1-2 days, 1 week or 1 month). Overall recluses preferred live prey over dead. but their choice was influenced by all three variables. Recluses were more likely to scavenge when presented with large live prey paired with dead prey of equal size than when presented with small live and dead prey. Spiders that had fed recently were more likely to scavenge. Finally, recluses preferred dead prey that were freshly killed or less than 24 hours old to items dead for longer periods. The use of carrion to feed spiderlings has never previously been observed in spiders. Here we show that the theridiid Theridion evexum Keyserling 1884 stored dead insectan prey for up to one week prior to the emergence of spiderlings from the egg sac, and continued to feed spiderlings dead prey for six weeks until spiderlings molted to the fourth instar. Spiders do not feed directly on vertebrate blood, but a small East African jumping spider (Salticidae), Evarcha culicivora, feeds indirectly on vertebrate blood by choosing as preferred prey female mosquitoes that have had recent blood meals. Experiments show that this spider can identify its preferred prey by sight alone and by odor alone. When presented with two types of size-matched motionless lures, E. culkivora consistently chose blood-fed female mosquitoes in preference to nonmosquito prey, male mosquitoes, and sugar-fed female mosquitoes (i.e., females that had not been feeding on blood). When the choice was between mosquitoes of different sizes (both blood- or both sugar-fed), small juveniles chose the smaller prey, whereas adults and larger juveniles chose the larger prey. However, preference for blood took precedence over preference for size (i.e., to get a blood meal, small individuals took prey that were larger than the preferred size, and larger individuals took prey that were smaller than the preferred size). When presented with odor from two prey types, E. culkivora approached the odor from blood-fed female mosquitoes significantly more often the odor of the prey that were not carrying blood. We experimentally verified a proximate cause for the preference of prey species by the predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi, which prefers the eggs of Amphitetranychus viennensis Zacher to those of Tetranychus urticae Koch. To separate the effects of spider mite eggs and spider mite webs on the prey preference of the predatory mite, we manipulated combinations of eggs and webs of the two prey species. The number of eggs consumed by adult female N. womersleyi was compared with respect to two factors: eggs of the same species under webs of the different species and eggs of different species under webs of the same species. A molecular approach, using aphid-specific monoclonal antibodies, was used to test the hypothesis that alternative prey can affect predation on aphids by linyphiid spiders. These spiders locate their webs in cereal crops within microsites where prey density is high. Previous work demonstrated that of two subfamilies of Linyphiidae, one, the Linyphiinae, is web-dependent and makes its webs at sites where they were more likely to intercept flying insects plus those (principally aphids) falling from the crop above. The other, the Erigoninae, is less web-dependent, making its webs at ground level at sites with higher densities of ground-living detritivores, especially Collembola. The guts of the spiders were analysed to detect aphid proteins using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Female spiders were consuming more aphid than males of both subfamilies and female Linyphiinae were, as predicted, eating more aphid than female Erigoninae. Rates of predation on aphids by Linyphiinae were related to aphid density and were not affected by the availability of alternative prey. However, predation by the Erigoninae on aphids was significantly affected by Collembola density. Itinerant Linyphiinae, caught away from their webs, contained the same concentration of aphid in their guts as web-owners. However, nonweb-owning Erigoninae, living away from Collembola aggregations at web-sites, contained significantly higher concentrations of aphid. For both subfamilies there was evidence of a disproportionate increase in predation on aphids once Collembola populations had declined. Using a subsocial spitting spider (Scytodes pallida) as the prey and a spider-eating jumping spider (Portia labiata) as the predator, the cost of parental care is investigated. Our findings suggest that being singled out as preferred prey by P. labiata is, for egg-carrying females of S. pallida, an important cost of parental care. In survival tests, during which P. labiata was given access to egg-carrying and eggless S. pallida females, egg-carrying females were preyed on more often than eggless females. In preference tests, motionless lures instead of living S. pallida were used. The lures were made by mounting dead egg-carrying and dead eggless S. pallida females in lifelike posture in webs. In these tests, P. labiata detected and identified, by vision alone, both kinds of prey (egg-carrying and eggless), and singled out egg-carrying females as preferred prey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary1. Reports are reviewed of gastropod feeding (malacophagy) by spiders and harvestmen. Although the standard textbooks on arachnids recognise the importance of gastropods as prey of harvestmen, none apparently refers to malacophagy by spiders. A review of several hundred papers on spider feeding habits revealed that species from several families kill and devour slugs and snails in the laboratory and/or field. 2. Malacophagy has been reported most frequently among mygalomorph spiders, and can make up a substantial proportion of the diets of some species, however gastropods make up an insignificant percentage of the prey of most araneomorph spiders. The spiders that eat gastropods are species with broad diets composed predominantly of arthropod prey. No species of spider appears to feed exclusively on gastropod prey. 3. Harvestmen from several families have broad diets that often include gastropods. Several species of the family Trogulidae and at least one species of the family Ischyropsalididae [Ischyropsalis hellwigi (Panzer)] are specialised gastropod predators. The trogulids are slender animals that attack the snail through the shell aperture (shell intruders). Ischyropsalis hellwigi, on the other hand, can crush snail shells with its powerful chelicerae (shell breakers). 4. The review highlights apparent convergent evolution by harvestmen and Carabidae of two mutually exclusive morphologies found among gastropod predators. It also suggests that there is an urgent need for systematic studies to be conducted to establish the extent and ecological importance of malacophagy in natural and anthropogenically altered habitats.
