Background: The evidence about the effects of trace elements on overall survival(OS) of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) is limited. This study aims to evaluate mixed effects of plasma trace elements on OS of ESCC. Methods: This prospective cohort analysis included 497 ESCC patients with a median follow-up of 52.3 months. The concentrations of 17 trace elements were measured. We fitted Cox's proportional hazards regression, factor analysis and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models to estimate the association between trace elements and OS. Results: Our analysis found that in the single-element model, Co, Ni, and Cd were associated with an increased risk of death, while Ga, Rb, and Ba were associated with a decreased risk. Cd had the strongest risk effect among all elements. As many elements were found to be mutually correlated, we conducted a factor analysis to identify common factors and investigate their associations with survival time. The factor analysis indicated that the factor with high factor loadings in Ga, Ba and B was linked to a decreased risk of death, while the factor with high factor loadings in Co, Ti, Cd and Pb was associated with a borderline significantly increased risk. Using BKMR analysis to disentangle the interaction between elements in significant factors, we discovered that Ga interacted with Ba and both elements had U-shaped effects with OS. Cd, on the other hand, had no interaction with other elements and independently increased the risk of death. Conclusions: Our analysis revealed that Ga, Ba and Cd were associated with ESCC outcome, with Ga and Ba demonstrating an interaction. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of preoperative albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) on overall survival (OS) and health-related quality of life in patients with esophageal cell squamous carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: Serum albumin and globulin were measured within one week before surgery. Multiple follow-ups were conducted among patients with ESCC in the study in order to assess their life quality. The method used in the study was a telephone interview. Quality of life was measured using the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30, version 3.0) and Esophageal Cancer Module (EORTC QLQ- OES18). Results: A total of 571 ESCC patients were included in the study. The results illustrated that 5-year OS of high AGR group (74.3%) was better than the low one (62.3%) (P = 0.0068). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis found that preoperative AGR (HR = 0.642, 95%CI: 0.444–0.927) are prognostic factor for patients with ESCC after surgery. In terms of quality of life, found that low AGR associated with increased postoperative time to deterioration (TTD) events in ESCC patients, and compared to low AGR, high AGR could delay the deterioration of emotional functioning(P = 0.001), dysphagia(P = 0.033), trouble with taste(P = 0.043) and speech problems(P = 0.043). After using the multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that high AGR could improve patients' emotional function (HR = 0.657, 95% CI: 0.507–0.852) and trouble with taste (HR = 0.706, 95% CI: 0.514–0.971). Background: To investigate the effect of tea consumption on the improvement of postoperative quality of life in male patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).Methods: The quality of life information of 290 male patients with ESCC was collected. The time to deterioration and the number of events in each area of quality of life was calculated by time-to-deterioration (TTD) model. The association between postoperative tea drinking and postoperative quality of life in male ESCC patients was investigated using the Cox proportional risk model.Results: Postoperative tea-drinking patients experienced delayed TTD in multiple domains, including general health, physical, role, emotional, and cognitive function, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, dyspnea, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, eating problems, difficulty swallowing, choking while swallowing saliva, dry mouth, taste difficulties, coughing, and speech problems. The multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that drinking tea after surgery improved quality of life, including physical function (HR = 0.722, 95% CI: 0.559-0.933), role function (HR = 0.740, 95% CI: 0.557-0.983), eating problems (HR = 0.718, 95% CI: 0.537-0.960), odynophagia (HR = 0.682, 95% CI: 0.492-0.945), trouble swallowing saliva (HR = 0.624, 95% CI: 0.444-0.877), coughing (HR = 0.627, 95% CI: 0.442-0.889) and speech problems (HR = 0.631, 95% CI: 0.441-0.903). Furthermore, the improvement was more significant in patients who drank tea before surgery and continued to drink tea after surgery.Conclusions: Postoperative tea drinking had a positive effect on delay in clinical deterioration and improvements in multiple functions and symptoms associated with ESCC in men. We aimed to investigate whether the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (ACCI) can predict the postoperative overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. Between 1 July 2015 and 31 July 2021, a retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients with primary ESCC who underwent radical esophagectomy. A total of 352 patients were included, with median age of 63.00 (IQR (interquartile range) 56.00–68.00). The patients were divided into low (n = 300) and high (n = 52) ACCI groups based on the optimal cut-off value of 5 points. Chronic pulmonary disease (38.4%) was the most common comorbidity. The results of the multivariate Cox regression showed that the ACCI (HR = 1.63, 95%CI: 1.04–2.56), tumor size (HR = 1.67, 95%CI: 1.05–2.66), pTNM (II vs. I, HR = 4.74, 95%CI: 1.82–12.32; III vs. I, HR = 6.08, 95%CI: 2.37–15.60), and postoperative chemotherapy (HR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.40–0.91) were significantly associated with the OS. Furthermore, the ACCI, tumor size, pTNM, and postoperative chemotherapy were also significantly associated with the CSS. Interactions were identified between the ACCI and postoperative chemotherapy, pTNM stage, and tumor size in relation to the OS and CSS. Purpose. To assess the role of multiple radiomic features of lymph nodes in the preoperative prediction of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods. Three hundred eight patients with pathologically confirmed ESCC were retrospectively enrolled (training cohort, n = 216; test cohort, n = 92). We extracted 207 handcrafted radiomic features and 1000 deep radiomic features of lymph nodes from their computed tomography (CT) images. The t-test and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were used to reduce the dimensions and select key features. Handcrafted radiomics, deep radiomics, and clinical features were combined to construct models. Models I (handcrafted radiomic features), II (Model I plus deep radiomic features), and III (Model II plus clinical features) were built using three machine learning methods: support vector machine (SVM), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), and random forest (RF). The best model was compared with the results of two radiologists, and its performance was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, area under the curve (AUC), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results. No significant differences were observed between cohorts. Ten handcrafted and 12 deep radiomic features were selected from the extracted features (p < 0.05). Model III could discriminate between patients with and without LNM better than the diagnostic results of the two radiologists. Conclusion. Background: Microbiota has been reported to play a role in cancer patients. Nevertheless, little is known about the association between alcohol consumption and resultant changes in the diversity and composition of oesophageal microbiota in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: We performed a hospital-based retrospective study of 120 patients with pathologically diagnosed primary ESCC. The relevant information for all study participants were collected through a detailed questionnaire. The differences in adjacent tissues between non-drinkers and drinkers were explored using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Raw sequencing data were imported into QIIME 2 to analyse the diversity and abundance of microbiota. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) and unconditional logistic regression were performed to determine the bacterial taxa that were associated with drinking. Results: The Shannon diversity index and Bray-Curtis distance of oesophageal microbiota were significantly different among drinkers(P < 0.05). The alcohol-related bacteria were primarily from the orders Clostridiales, Gemellales and Pasteurellales, family Clostridiaceae, Lanchnospiraceae, Helicobacteraceae, Alcaligenaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Pasteurellaceae and Gemellaceae; genus Clostridium, Helicobacter, Catonella, Bacteroides, Bacillus, Moraxella, and Bulleidia; and species B. moorei and longum (genus Bifidobacterium). In addition, the diversity and abundance of these microbiota were observed to be affected by the age, residential districts of the patients, and sampling seasons. Moreover, the higher the frequency and years of alcohol consumption, the lower was the relative abundance of genus Catonella that was observed. Objective: To further explore risk factors of esophageal squamous cell cancer specific for different macroscopic types. Methods: A total of 423 patients and 423 age (±3 years) and gender matched controls were recruited. Multinomial logistic regression and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the risk factors of ESCC specific for different macroscopic types. Results: In this study, we found that drinking hot tea (OR = 1.98, 95% CI:1.14–3.43) and higher intake of hard food (OR = 1.64, 95% CI:1.05–2.58) positively associated with ulcerative type of ESCC, but not with medullary type or other types. Although alcohol drinking and lower intake of fresh vegetable appeared to be more harmful to the ulcerative-type ESCC, the discrepant risks were not significantly different in ulcerative type and medullary type. Moreover, tobacco smoking, intake of hot food, spicy food, fresh fruit, scallion and garlic were related to ESCC risk, whereas no significant difference in magnitude of their associations with respect to macroscopic type was observed. Furthermore, significant multiplicative interaction between tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking was found in ulcerative-type and medullary-type ESCC. Conclusion: Drinking hot tea and higher intake of hard food were associated with increased risk of ulcerative type of ESCC. However, the mechanism for this difference needs to be further studied. Background: No previous study has investigated the association between oolong tea consumption and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), we aim to elucidate the association between oolong tea consumption and ESCC and its joint effects with a novel composite index. Methods: In a hospital-based case-control study, 646 cases of ESCC patients and 646 sex and age matched controls were recruited. A composite index was calculated to evaluate the role of demographic characteristics and life exposure factors in ESCC. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate the point estimates between oolong tea consumption and risk of ESCC. Results: No statistically significant association was found between oolong tea consumption and ESCC (OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 0.94–2.05). However, drinking hot oolong tea associated with increased risk of ESCC (OR = 1.60, 95% Cl: 1.06–2.41). Furthermore, drinking hot oolong tea increased ESCC risk in the high-risk group (composite index> 0.55) (OR = 3.14, 95% CI: 1.93–5.11), but not in the low-risk group (composite index≤0.55) (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 0.74–1.83). Drinking warm oolong tea did not influence the risk of ESCC. Conclusions: No association between oolong tea consumption and risk of ESCC were found, however, drinking hot oolong tea significantly increased the risk of ESCC, especially in high-risk populations. Previous studies have recommended harvesting a large number of lymph nodes (LNs) to improve the survival of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). These studies or clinical guidelines focus on the total harvested LNs during lymphadenectomy; however, the extent of LN dissection (LND) required in patients with ESCCs remains controversial. The present study proposed a novel individualized adequate LND (ALND) strategy to compliment current guidelines to improve individualized therapeutic efficacy. For N0 cases, ALND was defined as an LN harvest of >55% of the LNs from nodal zones adjacent to the tumor location; and for N+ cases, ALND was defined as 8, 8, 8, 8 or 16 LNs dissected from the involved cervical, upper, middle, lower and celiac zones, respectively. Retrospective analysis of the ESCC cohort revealed that the ALND was associated with improved patient survival [hazard ratio (HR)=0.45 and 95% CI=0.30–0.66)]. Stratified analyses revealed that the protective role of ALND was prominent, with the exception of higher pN+ staged (pN2-3) cases (HR=0.52, 95% CI=0.23–1.18). Furthermore, ALND was associated with improved survival in local diseases (T1-3/N0-1; HR=0.50, 95% CI=0.30–0.84) and locally advanced diseases (T4/Nany or T1-3/N2-3; HR=0.32, 95% CI=0.15–0.68). Background: To develop and validate practical prognostic indexes (PIs) for predicting the prognosis and response to postoperative adjuvant therapy in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: A large cohort of 1071 OSCC patients were randomized to either training set (N = 708) or validation set (N = 363). Three types of PIs were developed according to the nomogram scores, β coefficients and excess hazard ratios, respectively. Restricted cubic spline was used to demonstrate the relationship between PIs and the risks of death. Results: First, a nomogram was developed incorporating age at diagnosis, smoking status, clinical stage, tumor differentiation, lymph node status, comorbidity, and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio levels. Then, three PIs were established with high survival predictive ability, and were superior to AJCC staging system (all P < .05). The risks of death were escalated continuously with the increasing number of PIs. Interestingly, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy was positively associated with poor overall survival in patients with low PIs, but exerted a beneficial effect on patients with high PIs. Conclusion: Combined nomogram with further established PIs not only predicts the survival probability of OSCC patients, but also continuously quantifies the risk of death. Objective: To dynamically estimate conditional survival (CS) probabilities for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) after surgical resection.Method: A large-scale prospective study was performed involving 1147 eligible OSCC patients from December 2002 to June 2018. Follow-up was completed on January 8, 2019. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to assess prognostic factors related to overall survival (OS). Three-year CS (CS3) of patients who had already survived x years was calculated as the formula CS3 = OS(x+3)/OS(x).Results: CS3 estimates at the time of 0, 1, 3, 5-year survival demonstrated a tendency increase over time, and improved from 78.47% to 82.25%, while the postoperative actuarial OS decreased from 78.47% at 3 years to 57.12% at 8 years. Moreover, the differences between CS3 and actuarial OS were more obvious among patients with unfavorable tumor characteristics. Disparities in CS3 across all subgroups of tumor features illustrated more prominent at baseline (d range: 0.24 to 0.40), while the gaps would narrow if those patients have already survived 5 years (d range: -0.01 to 0.18).Conclusion: Our findings suggest that survival profiles of OSCC patients evolve and increase over time following resection, especially for those with unfavorable tumor features at initial diagnosis.
