The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) to the fields of ecology and animal biology has rapidly expanded over the past three decades, particularly with regards to water analysis. SIA now provides the opportunity to monitor migration patterns, examine food webs, and assess habitat changes in current and past study systems. While carbon and nitrogen SIA of biological samples have become common, analyses of oxygen or hydrogen are used more sparingly despite their promising utility for tracing water sources and animal metabolism. Common ecological applications of oxygen or hydrogen SIA require injecting enriched isotope tracers. As such, methods for processing and analyzing biological samples are tailored for enriched tracer techniques, which require lower precision than other techniques given the large signal-to-noise ratio of the data. However, instrumentation advancements are creating new opportunities to expand the applications of high-throughput oxygen and hydrogen SIA. To support these applications, we update methods to distill and measure water derived from biological samples with consistent precision equal to, or better than, ± 0.1 ‰ for δ17O, ± 0.3 ‰ for δ18O, ± 1 ‰ for δ2H, ± 2 ‰ for d-excess, and ± 15 per meg for Δ17O. We investigated the stable isotope hydrology of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada over a five year period from September, 2017 to August, 2022. The δ2H and δ18O values of integrated monthly precipitation were weakly seasonal and ranged from –66 to –15 ‰ and from –9.7 to –1.9 ‰, respectively. Fitting these monthly precipitation data resulted in a local meteoric water line (LMWL) defined by: δ2H = 7.22 ± 0.21 · δ18O + 7.50 ± 1.22 ‰. Amount-weighted annual precipitation had δ2H and δ18O values of –36 ± 11 ‰ and –6.1 ± 1.4 ‰, respectively. Deep groundwater had more negative δ2H and δ18O values than mean annual precipitation, suggesting recharge occurs mainly in the winter, while shallow groundwater had δ2H and δ18O values more consistent with mean annual precipitation or mixing of freshwater with local seawater. Surface waters had more positive values and showed evidence of isolation from the groundwater system. The stable isotopic compositions of plant (leaf) water, on the other hand, indicate plants use groundwater as their source. Fog had δ2H and δ18O values that were significantly more positive than those of local precipitation, yet had similar 17O-excess values. δ2H values of horsehair from 4 individuals lacked seasonality, but had variations typical to those of precipitation on the island. Differences in mean δ2H values of horsehair were statistically significant and suggest variations in water use may exist between spatially disparate horse communities. Isotope technology is widely used in geochemical mechanisms analysis; however, studies on the origin of pit lake water by isotopes in coal concentration areas in grassland are rare. In this study, 20 groups of water samples were collected, which were subjected to chemical analysis to determine the hydrogeochemical characteristics of pit lake water. The mechanisms of pit lake water formation and recharge–evaporation were ascertained through principal component analysis and the Rayleigh fractionation model. The results indicate that the phreatic water is least affected by evaporation, followed by confined water, surface water and pit lake water. The ionic composition of surface water, phreatic water and most of the confined water is mainly affected by leaching, some confined water can be recharged by surface or phreatic water; while the ionic composition of pit lake water is dominantly affected by evaporation (69.4 %) and is less affected by groundwater recharge (17.1 %) and human activities (11.5 %). The pit lake water is recharged by precipitation, phreatic water and the lateral runoff of confined water; however, the proportion of phreatic and confined water recharge is small. The region around the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula is warming fast, a situation that will lead to widespread changes in local hydrological cycles. King George Island (KGI) hosts a complex network of lakes and rivers, fed by glaciers, snow and rain, and underlain by thick permafrost. We present here the first study of the stable isotope composition of the surface waters in the ice-free southern peninsulas of KGI. Permafrost samples had the highest δ18O and δ2H values (–6.7 and –50 ‰, respectively), and river waters the lowest (–9.1 and –70 ‰, respectively), with groundwater (–8.2 and –62.7 ‰, respectively), lakes (–8.6 and –66.8 ‰, respectively) and (summer) meltwater (–9 and –69.5 ‰, respectively) having intermediary values. Our results suggest that a clear separation of the various water bodies (permafrost, snow, meltwater, lakes) based on the δ18Owater and δ2Hwater is possible. Further, water in lakes on a W–E transect (i.e. with increased distance from the Bellingshausen Sea) have a general tendency towards lower δ18O (and δ2H) values. The results allow for the establishment of a baseline against which ongoing and future changes of the hydrological cycle could be analysed, and past climate changes be reconstructed. In the Himalayas, the lives and livelihoods of millions of people are sustained by water resources primarily depending on the moisture brought by Western Disturbances and Indian Summer Monsoon. In the present study, a network of 12 precipitation stations was established across the Kashmir Valley to understand the spatial and meteorological factors controlling precipitation isotopes. Temperature and relative humidity are dominant meteorological factors, whereas altitude, proximity to forest canopy, land use/land cover, windward and leeward sides of the mountains are the main physical factors influencing precipitation isotopes. The study suggests that the Mediterranean Sea and nearby water bodies along with continental recycling are the dominant sources of moisture from October to May, while the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and continental recycling are the main sources of moisture from June to September. However, some precipitation events from October to May collect moisture from the Arabian Sea and some precipitation events from June to September collect moisture from the Mediterranean Sea. The occasional passage of Western Disturbances in summer merging with the Indian Summer Monsoon yields heavy to very heavy precipitation. This article discusses a study conducted in Finland on the variations in oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes in boreal lakes. The study found that the isotope values differed between surface and deeper layers of the lakes during a warm and dry summer, but the variation was lower during a rainy summer. The study also examined the correlation between isotope values and lake area and found a strong correlation. The results suggest the importance of groundwater inflow in boreal lake water budgets. The study provides valuable information for understanding the dynamics of these aquatic systems. Background: The use of plant protein intrinsically labelled with stable isotopes provides an innovative solution to assess the efficiency of protein intake by humans. Here, the incorporation of 2H has been applied to intrinsically labelled plant protein in the common bean. This study aimed to evaluate which is the best phenological phase of seed maturation to incorporate the heavy hydrogen isotope 2H into seed amino acids. Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were grown in pots, then, after 50 days sowing, 2H2O dissolved in irrigation water was applied, then again at an interval of either 3, 6, 9, and 12 days. Results: Applications of 2H2O at 6, 9, and 12 days after the first application, in the full-flowering stage, were the best treatments for enriching protein-bound amino acids in the bean seed with 2H. Conclusion: All treatments resulted in enrichment above 500 ppm, so the treatments (quantity and timing of 2H2O addition) were deemed successful for enriching bean seeds. This makes the intrinsically labelled seeds suitable for preparing test meals to assess the digestion and essential amino acid absorption of common bean amino acids in human subjects. Characterization of the groundwater flow systems is important for sustainable water resource management decision-making. We have used vertical profiles of electrical conductivity (EC) and water temperature taken at 2 m intervals during drilling of 109 boreholes, and samples for stable isotope analysis (δ18O, δ2H) taken from 47 boreholes to characterize groundwater recharge, flow and discharge. 222Rn measurements and piezometric evidence were used to complement results from the EC and stable isotopes. The converging evidence shows that groundwater in the study area is characterized by a mix of two different groundwater flow systems: i) the deep groundwater systems are connected to the regional groundwater flow originating from the highlands, outside the surface water basin, ii) the shallow groundwater systems get recharge from local rains. The local recharge zones are located in highly urbanized and industrialized zones posing risk to recharge reduction and pollution. A hydro-geochemical characterization was conducted in the northern part of the Sonora River basin, covering an area of 9400 km2. Equipotential lines indicated that groundwater circulation coincided with the surface water flow direction. Based on the groundwater temperature measured (on average ∼21 °C), only one spring exhibited thermalism (51 °C). Electrical conductivity (160–1750 μS/cm), chloride and nitrate concentrations (>10 and >45 mg/L) imply highly ionized water and anthropogenic pollution. In the river network, δ18O values revealed a clear modern meteoric origin. Focused recharge occurred mainly from the riverbeds during the rainy season. During the dry season, diffuse recharge was characterized by complex return flows from irrigation, urban, agricultural, mining, and livestock. Drilled wells (>50 m) exhibited a strong meteoric origin from higher elevations during the rainy season with minimal hydrochemical anomalies. Our results contribute to the knowledge of mountain-front and mountain-block recharge processes in a semi-arid and human-altered landscape in northern Mexico, historically characterized by limited hydrogeological data. Stable water isotopes in ground-level vapour are key to estimating water exchange between geospheres. Their sampling, however, is limited to laser-absorption spectrometers and satellite observations, having inherent shortcomings. This study investigates diffusive kinetic fractionation during liquid condensation under supersaturated environment, providing a cost-effective, reliable way of sampling ground-level vapour isotopes (18O, 2H). Experiments were undertaken at three locations in India with 'liquid' samples collected from condensation of ambient air at 0°C. Simultaneously, pristine 'vapour' was sampled via cryogenic-trapping using liquid nitrogen–alcohol slush at –78°C. The 'liquid' condensed under supersaturation was progressively more depleted in 18O, and less enriched in 2H than expected under equilibrium fractionation, with an increasing degree of supersaturation expressed as saturation index (Si). This study revealed: (1) Si, molecular density, Rh, T together control the extent of isotopic kinetic fractionation. (2) The presence of diffusive concentration gradient inhibits the flow of heavier isotopes during liquid condensation. (3) The stochastic nature of the process cannot be explained using a physics-based model alone. The artificial neural network model is hence deployed to sample δ18O (δ2H) within –0.24 ± 1.79‰ (0.53 ± 11.23 ‰) of true value. Stable water isotopes are invaluable in helping understand catchment functioning and are widely used in experimental catchments, with higher frequency data becoming increasingly common. Such datasets incur substantial logistical costs, reducing their feasibility for use by decision makers needing to understand multi-catchment, landscape-scale functioning over a relatively short period to assess the impact of proposed land use change. Instead, reconnaissance style surveys (high spatial resolution across the landscape at a lower temporal frequency, over a relatively short period) offer an alternative, complementary approach. To test if such sampling could identify heterogeneities in hydrological functioning, and associated landscape controls, we sampled 27 stream sites fortnightly for one year within a peri-urban landscape undergoing land use change. Visual examination of raw data and application of mean transit time and young water fraction models indicated urbanisation, agriculture and responsive soils caused more rapid cycling of precipitation to stream water, whereas mature forestry provided attenuation. We were also able to identify contiguous catchments which functioned fundamentally differently, meaning their response to land use alteration would also be different. This study demonstrated how stable water isotopes can be a valuable, low-cost addition to tools available for environmental decision makers by providing local, process-based information. Serving as a medium between source water and cellulose, leaf water contributes to the isotope ratios (δ18O, δ2H) of plant organic matter, which can be used for paleoclimate reconstruction. This study is the first to examine the diurnal variations in the δ18O and δ2H of leaf water on the southern Tibetan Plateau. The δ18O and δ2H of leaf water were relatively low when precipitation events occurred. In particular, 18O and 2H of leaf water became extremely depleted 5 h after the precipitation event. Our findings demonstrate that precipitation can modify the isotope ratios of leaf water from external and internal causes. First, precipitation events affect meteorological elements, lead to decreases in leaf transpiration, and immediately weaken the isotope enrichment of leaf water ('rapid effect' of precipitation). Second, precipitation events affect the internal plant–soil water cycle process, causing the plant to preferentially use deeper soil water, and the corresponding isotope ratios of leaf water exhibit extremely low values 5 h after precipitation events ('delay effect' of precipitation). This study suggests that researchers need to be cautious in separating the signals of precipitation and hydrological processes when interpreting isotope records preserved in tree-ring cellulose archives from the Tibetan Plateau. The changes in δ13CH4 and δ12C1H32H during sulphate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) were described using dynamic modelling. The batch sulphate-dependent AOM at the nearly linear dynamics of methane oxidation with different enriched cultures originating from three marine sediments was simulated. The traditional Rayleigh equation for carbon and hydrogen stable isotopes in methane was derived from the basic dynamic isotope equation. The general and reduced models, taking into account the reaction stoichiometry and based on balances of chemical elements and their isotopes, describes a redistribution of stable isotope values in the sulphate-dependent AOM process. It was shown that AOM is the first and rate-limiting step in the whole AOM + SR (sulphate reduction) process. The different fractionation factors of carbon and hydrogen isotopes in methane were obtained for three marine sediments. It was concluded that during incubation the highest concentration of methanotrophic archaea might be responsible for the lowest fractionation factors of stable isotopes of carbon and hydrogen in methane. Iran is a semi-arid and arid country which always faces a water shortage crisis. Thus, the water resources in Iran should be studied by accurate methods such as stable isotope techniques. In precipitation sampling stations across Iran, the δ18O (ranges from −16.3 to −0.3 ‰, −4.9 ‰ average), δ2H (−114 to –13 ‰, −24.2 ‰ average) and d-excess (−2.1 to –22.7, 16.5 ‰ average) values are higher compared to δ18O (ranges from −10.9 to −3.1 ‰, −6.7 ‰ average), δ2H (−71 to −6 ‰, −37.4 ‰ average) and d-excess (1.0 to –21.6 ‰, 14.9 ‰ average) values in groundwater stations. Stable isotope distribution maps in precipitation and groundwater were also developed for Iran. The stepwise technique was used to study the role of parameters influencing stable isotopes in Iran precipitation. Results show the dominant role of temperature, elevation and latitude as well as 'cP and MedT' air masses mixture on stable isotope values in precipitation. Furthermore, the contribution percentage of each air mass which influences Iran in groundwater resources recharge was studied using 'Simmr' package in R programming language. Atmospherically deposited hoarfrost is probably the least important quantitative component of the hydrosphere, yet in places acts as an important source of water. Although countless studies have investigated the stable isotope composition of virtually all other components of the global hydrosphere, little is known on its stable isotope composition. We addressed this gap in knowledge by investigating the stable isotope composition of hoarfrost and precipitation in the Southern Carpathian Mountains (East-Central Europe) in relation with the local and regional meteorological parameters and hoarfrost characteristics. Hoarfrost and precipitation were collected at the Țarcu Peak Weather Station (2180 m a.s.l.) between December 2018 and February 2019. The main sources of moisture (as indicated by high deuterium excess values) were the Black (and possibly Caspian) Sea as well as the terrestrial sources in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Hoarfrost was deposited during periods of intense wind, with δ18O and δ2H being strongly correlated with air temperature. No correlation has been found between the intensity of hoarfrost deposition and its stable isotope characteristics. Our data indicates that the δ18O values of hoarfrost deposits faithfully record air temperature variability during deposition, while the d-excess parameter records conditions at the moisture sources. As demand for regional and organically produced foodstuff has increased in Europe, the need has arisen to verify the products' origin and production method. For food authenticity tracking (production method and origin), we examined 286 samples of wheat (Triticum aestivum), potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), and apples (Malus domestica) from different regions in Germany for their stable isotope compositions of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and sulphur. Single-variate authentication methods were used. Suitable isotope tracers to determine wheat's regional origin were δ18O and δ34S. δ13C helped to distinguish between organic and conventional wheat samples. For the separation of the production regions of potatoes, several isotope tracers were suitable (e.g. δ18O, δ2H, δ15N, δ13C and δ34S isotopes in potato protein), but only protein δ15N was suitable to differentiate between organic and conventional potato samples. For the apple samples, 2H and 18O isotopes helped to identify production regions, but no significant statistical differences could be found between organically and conventionally farmed apples. For food authenticity tracking, our study showed the need to take the various isotopes into account. The Corumbataí River basin (São Paulo, Brazil) has a critical situation regarding water availability due to the intensive use to support agriculture and urbanization, requiring scientific information to face water demand. The aim of this study is to present a hydrological characterization based on the analysis of seasonal isotope variations (rainfall, groundwater, and surface water) and hydrometric data. Results indicate that baseflow contribution varies from 50 % to 70 % of the total flow, and water isotopic composition denotes a seasonal regime marked by the mixing of surface and groundwater in the wet period and groundwater discharge during the dry season. The results presented indicated the strong seasonal connection between atmospheric inputs and water movement across the basin, which poses an urgent need to diversify monitoring methods and create feasible regional and political regulations to control the effects on basin water resilience in the face of climate change and growing demand. Water stable isotopes have been widely used as natural tracers to investigate soil–plant–atmosphere interactions. Recent developments in induction module cavity ring-down spectroscopy (IM-CRDS) have made it possible to rapidly complete isotope analyses, and to combust co-extracted organic compounds at the same time. However, the agreement between IM-CRDS and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) analyses has generally been poor and was primarily attributable to spectral interference of IM-CRDS. Here we evaluated the impacts of organic contamination on the isotope ratios using IM-CRDS with two different methods. No spectral interference was observed for solid samples measured directly by IM-CRDS, whereas clear organic contamination occurred in isotope analyses for pre-extracted plant stem and leaf samples. Our results demonstrate that IM-CRDS can fully combust co-extracted organic compounds by in-line oxidation in the direct measurement of solid samples, although this may not guarantee that the IM-CRDS can obtain better isotopic data than IRMS. It may be risky to evaluate the performance of IM-CRDS by measuring pre-extracted water samples because cryogenic vacuum distillation is likely to introduce extra organic compounds, which may not be fully removed during subsequent IM-CRDS measurement. Since 1973, Kunene River water has been carried from the Calueque reservoir in Angola along a 160 km open concrete canal to the town of Oshakati in the central part of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin and has been supplying drinking water to the most densely populated rural area of Namibia. Despite its importance for the region, intra-seasonal water quality and the technical condition of the canal are not routinely checked. Water samples were collected during four field campaigns right before the onset of the rainy season (November 2013 and 2014), and after the rainy season (June 2014 and May 2015), at 16 sites along the canal for stable water isotopes (deuterium, oxygen-17 and oxygen-18) and hydrochemical analyses. The isotope patterns and chemical composition of the canal water is discussed in comparison to local rain, Kunene source water, surface water and groundwater. Clear isotope enrichment indicates evaporative loss of water. A Craig–Gordon model was used to estimate water loss. The loss increases with distance from the source with a maximum of up to 10 %, depending on the season. Hosting the flattest sedimentary plains and highest Andean range of the continent, southern South America faces hydrological transformations driven by climate and land use changes. Although water stable isotopes can help understand these transformations, regional synthesis on their composition is lacking. We compiled for the first time a dataset of H and O isotopic composition for 1659 samples (precipitation, rivers, groundwater and lakes) along latitude (22.4°S to 41.6°S), longitude (55.3°W to 71.5°W), elevation (1–4700 m) and precipitation (∼50 to ∼1500 mm/a) gradients encompassing the Chaco-Espinal-Pampas plains, their adjacent Andean Cordillera and smaller mountain ranges in-between. Emerging patterns reveal (i) only slight seasonal isotope trends in precipitation with no effects of event size, (ii) Atlantic/Amazonian vs. Pacific moisture supply to rivers north and south of the 'arid diagonal' of the continent, respectively, (iii) uniform isotopic composition in Atlantic/Amazonian-fed rivers vs. poleward isotope enrichment in Pacific-fed rivers caused by the elevation decline of the Andes, (iv) strong direct evaporation effect in rivers and shallow (<1 m) phreatic groundwater of the plains. We provide the first integrated water isotope geographical patterns of southern South America helping to improve our understanding of its water cycling patterns at the atmosphere and the land. In the eastern region of central Costa Rica, land use in the sub-basins of the Maravilla-Chiz and Quebrada Honda rivers (47 km2) is dominated by agricultural and livestock production, while groundwater resources constitute the main drinking water supply. This study aimed to (a) evaluate the location of groundwater recharge areas and groundwater flow paths, and (b) provide a characterization of the hydrochemistry and possible anthropic impacts. Groundwater was collected from 20 sites during the dry and rainy seasons and analysed for major ions, water stable isotopes and 222Rn. Approximated recharge areas were estimated through a local altitudinal line based on isotopic compositions in springs. The hydrochemical and isotopic characterization of groundwater showed that the main recharge areas occur in the upper part of the basin, except for springs in the middle part of the basin probably due to a certain hydraulic disconnection from the upper part that facilitates local recharge processes. In the lower basin, groundwater exhibited greater transit times and longer flow paths. Low nitrate, chloride and sulphate concentrations found in groundwater indicate low leaching of fertilizers or urban wastewaters. Water use by anthropogenic activities in the face of climate change invokes a better understanding of headwater sources and lowland urban water allocations. Here, we constrained a Bayesian mixing model with stable isotope data (2018–2019) in rainfall (N = 704), spring water (N = 96), and surface water (N = 94) with seasonal isotope sampling (wet and dry seasons) of an urban aqueduct (N = 215) in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Low δ18O rainfall compositions corresponded to the western boundary of the study area, whereas high values were reported to the northeastern limit, reflecting the influence of moisture transport from the Caribbean domain coupled with strong orographic effects over the Pacific slope. The latter is well-depicted in the relative rainfall contributions (west versus east) in two headwater systems: (a) spring (68.7 ± 3.4 %, west domain) and (b) stream (55.8 ± 3.9 %, east domain). The aqueduct exhibited a spatial predominance of spring water and surface water during a normal wet season (78.7 %), whereas deep groundwater and spring water were fundamental sources for the aqueduct in the dry season (69.4 %). Our tracer-based methodology can help improve aqueduct management practices in changing climate, including optimal water allocation and reduced evaporative losses in the dry season. The Mendoza River streamflow, South America (∼32 °S), derives almost exclusively from winter snow precipitation falling in the Andes. Almost 70% of the water feeding the river originates in the Cordillera Principal geological province. In addition to the snow that precipitates in this area, there are 951 cryoforms providing meltwater to the upper catchment. Given the high inter-annual variability of snowfall and the megadrought affecting the region since 2010, it is crucial to quantify the contribution from different water sources buffering the Mendoza River runoff. Combining instrumental records of streamflow from glaciers and rivers, meteorological data, remote sensing of snow-covered areas and ionic and stable isotope analysis of different water sources, this study attempts to understand the hydrological contribution of different water sources to the basin. We demonstrated for the first time the relevance of different water sources in addition to snow in a dry period. During the melting season, 65% of the streamwaters originated from the glaciers (i.e. 50 and 15% from glaciers and rock glaciers, respectively), representing a higher proportion compared to snowmelt (17%). Sustainable groundwater management implies a good knowledge of recharge processes, especially in areas with water deficit, like the semi-arid region of Banabuiú watershed (Ceará State, Northeast of Brazil). In this zone, phreatic aquifers consist of Precambrian crystalline fractured reservoirs characterised by a high spatial anisotropy, both in terms of hydrodynamics and water quality. This study implemented a multi-tracer approach (18O, 2H, 14C, 3H, CFC, SF6), combined with hydrodynamic data (i.e. groundwater levels) to identify the groundwater recharge origin and the recharge mechanisms, and to estimate the groundwater residence time. At the basin scale, hydrodynamic data and local observations indicated the high reactivity of aquifers to precipitation and suggested that infiltration processes occur mostly through preferential infiltration zones. Stable isotope data showed a major contribution of evaporated surface water in the recharge process from many artificial or natural ponds. Groundwater residence time determination highlighted the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of flow path organisation within aquifers, with variable contributions between fast vertical flow (present-day end-member; 15–85 %) and a slower horizontal flow (old end-member <1960), underlining the vulnerability of aquifers to present-day environmental stress or pollution. The use of stable isotopes (δ2H and δ18O) is widespread in water resources studies. In the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, the application of isotope techniques has increased in the past decade, but there remains room to gain self-reliance in environmental isotope studies, necessitating easy and fast access to good-quality isotope data. To that end, in 2018 the IAEA carried out the first regional interlaboratory comparison exercise, testing the analytical performance of 25 laboratories using isotope-ratio mass spectrometry and laser absorption spectroscopy. The three test samples covered a commonly observed range of 0 to –16 ‰ δ18O and 0 to –115 ‰ δ2H. z- and ζ-scores were used to benchmark laboratories' performance against a strict criterion. We found that 81% of the laboratories had satisfactory performance ( | z | ¯ ≤ 2) for δ2H but only 54% achieved similar scores for δ18O. Only a minor fraction of results (12% for δ2H and 15% for δ18O) were unsatisfactory. The larger number of questionable results for δ18O confirmed the challenges in laser absorption spectroscopy for this isotope. Besides instrumental performance, the sample throughput, laboratory reference materials, and data post-processing were contributing factors to inaccurate or imprecise performance. A novel method of the accelerated equilibration of 18O between CO2 and H2O for the measurement of the 18O/16O isotope ratios in aqueous samples with natural isotope abundances is presented. This rapid equilibrium method is based on the in vitro application of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA). The CA from bovine erythrocytes was adsorptively fixed to 3-mm glass beads with an etched surface. After the addition of this carrier-fixed CA catalyst to the water sample, the isotope equilibrium was already reached after 1 h. The previously used non-catalysed 18O isotope exchange in water samples needs about 24 h. Whole blood samples also showed fast 18O isotope equilibration, which definitely results from the native presence of CA in erythrocytes. By shortening the time for sample preparation, the CA catalysed technique can significantly increase the throughput of the samples to be measured, and also 18O and 2H measurement by means of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) may be synchronized. The study investigates the factors that control the isotopic composition of tropical precipitation in Bangladesh. Daily and monthly rainfall samples were collected from three stations from 2013 to 2015: (1) northern and moderately high altitude: Sylhet, (2) middle part of the country (close to Tropic of Cancer): Savar, and (3) southern coastal region: Barisal. To escape from the post-evaporation effect, proper care was adopted. This is supported by the fact that the local meteoric water lines (LMWLs) derived for the daily precipitations of all stations mostly follow the global meteoric water line (GMWL). The results exhibit a clear seasonal and spatial variation in both δ18O and δ2H of precipitation. 18O is more depleted in samples collected during rainy (monsoon) seasons, while 18O enrichment is associated to winter and summer (pre-monsoon) seasons. During rainy season, intra-seasonal variability of δ18O rainfall is clearly seen and remarkable depletion of 18O is observed during the period of intense convective activity over the Bay of Bengal. The stable isotopes of water (18O, 2H) and other hydrochemical properties were used to assess seasonal changes between sources of stream water and flow pathways in baseflow conditions for two headwater sub-catchments (∼3 km2) of the Jonkershoek, a mountainous catchment in the Western Cape of South Africa. The sub-catchments differ in land cover, one is dominated by indigenous fynbos vegetation and the other by pine plantation. Stream water, higher elevation springs, and lower elevation groundwater samples were collected monthly from January 2018 to January 2019, and were analysed for stable isotopes, electrical conductivity (EC) and pH. The stream water isotopic values resembled those of groundwater during the dry and wet seasons. Results indicated a steady contribution of spring discharge to streams during the dry season, with rainfall contribution less evident. Wet season flows were attributed to interflow including perennial and ephemeral springs. Spatial variations in EC between the sub-catchments were indicative of a greater proportional input from subsurface water, more evaporation and/or more mineral dissolution in the pine-dominated sub-catchment. The spatiotemporal variability in EC was significantly larger than for the stable isotopes. This study investigated the spatial variation of isotopes in precipitation over Thailand in relation to geographic condition. Monthly data (2013–2015) of stable isotopes (δ2H and δ18O) in precipitation within the region 5°37′–20°27′N, 98°04′–105°31′E were analysed using the least squares regression method to determine the possible effects of latitude and longitude on δ18O and d-excess in precipitation. Results showed that the spatial variability of isotopes in precipitation is affected by both continental and amount effects and that the variation is slightly greater in terms of latitude than longitude. Latitude and longitude effects both exhibited negative and positive correlations. Negative correlation, whereby isotopic values decreased with increasing latitude, was found during the June–August and September–November periods. Conversely, a positive relationship appeared in the December–February and March–May seasons. These effects had opposite correlation owing to the various moisture sources and different precipitation patterns between seasons. Furthermore, weak correlation for both latitude and longitude effects was revealed during September–November because of the intraseasonal variation of the monsoon. Stable isotopes in precipitation and spring water were observed in a low mountain region, because seasonal variability in isotope altitude and amount effects based on their simultaneous observations in low latitude area have not been studied so much. Seasonal variability in spatial averages of monthly δ18O and d-excess in precipitation ranged from −11.96 to −5.16 ‰ and from 8.0 to 24.2 ‰, respectively, while those in spring water ranged from −7.64 to −7.18 ‰ and from 11.0 to 13.6 ‰. The seasonal variability in spatial average of monthly δ18O in precipitation was much wider than in spring water. Monthly isotopic composition in spring water was mostly plotted along the local meteoric water lines for precipitation in warm months, suggesting that precipitation in warm months is the main source of spring water. Annual isotope altitude effects in precipitation (−0.12 ‰/100 m) and spring water (−0.13 ‰/100 m) were almost the same, and monthly isotope amount effects for cold months (−7.9 to −0.9 ‰/100 mm) were relatively higher than those for the warm months (−12.0 to −9.6 ‰/100 mm). East Africa is an underrepresented region in respect of monitoring the stable isotopic composition of precipitation (δ18Oprec and δ2Hprec). In 2017, we collected precipitation samples from ten weather stations located along an altitudinal transect ranging from 1304 to 4375 m a.s.l. The δ18Oprec and δ2Hprec values varied from –8.7 to +3.7 ‰ and –38 to +29 ‰, respectively. The local meteoric water line is characterised by a lower slope, a higher intercept and more positive d-excess values (δ2H = 5.3 ± 0.2 * δ18O + 14.9 ± 0.9) compared to the global meteoric water line. Both altitude and amount of precipitation clearly correlate with our isotope data. However, the δ18Oprec and δ2Hprec values show at the same time a seasonal pattern reflecting rainy versus dry season. More enriched isotope values prevailed shortly after the end of the dry season; more depleted isotope values coincided with high precipitation amounts recorded in May, August and September. Moreover, HYSPLIT trajectories reveal that during the dry season water vapour originates primarily from the Arabian Sea, whereas during the wet season it originates primarily from the Southern Indian Ocean. These findings challenge the traditional amount effect interpretation of paleoclimate isotope records from East Africa and rather point to a previously underestimated source effect. Water samples from the different basins of the Baltic Sea and North Sea were collected during four cruises taken place in 2016–2017. Altogether 60 water samples for 3H activity concentration and 120 water samples for stable isotopes ratio (δ18O and δ2H) were analysed. Exceptionally strong inflow activity from North Sea to the Baltic Sea occurred prior our surveys. The data obtained enabled comprehensive evaluation of tritium and stable isotopes distribution in waters of Baltic Sea and contributing inputs, including riverine and atmospheric freshwater flux and saline water inflow through the Danish Straits. By comparing with the previous studies, we noticed a tendency toward an increase in the δ18O and δ2H values of zero-salinity component over time, which may be due to climate change. Karst environments have an inherent complexity that interferes with their hydrogeology comprehension. Hence, isotope hydrology can be a valuable tool to assess trajectory of subsurface flows in an unexplored setting. The study area is located in the Lagoa Santa Karst, an environmental protection area of great economic, cultural and ecological importance, where Neoproterozoic metalimestones accommodate karst-fractured aquifers, characterized by complex water dynamics, essential vulnerability and high productivity. The purpose of this study was to investigate groundwater flow origins of springs using principally environmental stable isotopes 2H and 18O. Rainwater and spring water were sampled and analysed. The LMWL presents angular and linear coefficients strongly similar to those of the GMWL. Spring isotopic signatures, which represent the base flow and present wide-ranging of 2H and 18O, were separated into two groups. The first group can be associated with recent rainwater major contributions, while the second group shows significant evaporated water contributions, largely represented by resurgences. Tritium concentration and physico-chemical parameter data supported this interpretation, pointing that waters of the second group remained more time on the surface and subsurface. In this study, three chemometric models for vegetables growing system (field versus greenhouse), geographical origin and species attribution using stable isotope (δ13C, δ18O, δ2H) and elemental fingerprints of 101 samples (54 squashes and 47 radishes) commercialized on Romanian market were developed. These models were constructed and validated through linear discriminant analysis. Initial validations of 94.4% and 83% were obtained for squash and radish growing systems, respectively, such that one squash and four radish samples declared to be grown in the field were attributed to the greenhouse group. For this purpose, the most powerful differentiation markers appeared to be Sn and δ13C for radishes, and Sn, Cu for squashes. Regarding the vegetable origin, four samples, initially considered to originate from Romania (95% for initial classification) were attributed to the foreign group in the cross-validation procedure (93.1%). Romanian radishes and squashes were characterized by a higher content of Na and Cu, respectively, compared with foreign samples, while the mean values for Zn, Sr, Zr and Co concentrations were found to be higher for the vegetables from abroad. The stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen can provide useful insights into water origin and hydrological processes. The present study aims to investigate the characteristics of stable H/O isotopes of groundwater and surface water in a coastal area of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. Isotopes and chloride concentrations of surface water show a highly seasonal and linearly spatial variability, depending on the distance to the sea. The seasonal variation of upstream discharge and rainfall plays an important role in changes of the isotopic compositions and chloride concentrations. Tide also influences on chloride concentrations of surface water while it does not change the isotopic compositions. Evaporation plays a crucial role in changes of isotopic compositions, while the influence of freshwater/seawater mixing on isotopic variabilities is negligible. Groundwater has a spatial heterogeneity in isotopic compositions and chloride concentrations, reflecting different recharge sources and seawater intrusion processes. Groundwater in shallow aquifers originates from rainfall and surface water with small evaporative losses, and it experienced different magnitudes of mixing with seawater. Water scarcity is a leading concern in both developing and developed nations. Coping with water scarcity requires an understanding of various hydrological processes that act upon precipitation, surface and groundwater at a local scale. We measured isotopic signatures of several water samples from two distinct ecosystems, i.e. tropical savanna in the West and the warm semi-arid region in the East lying across the Western Ghats mountain range, India, to understand the hydrological processes. The results show that the hydrogeological conditions strongly influence the isotopic characteristics of water of different resources, governed by different hydrological processes, even at close spatial scales. Based on the local evaporation lines of different water resources within a particular ecosystem, it is inferred that the water resources are well linked at one site, but have diverse connectivity at the other site. Further, the isotopic signatures of all the water resources are systematically affected by the monsoon precipitation. In addition, anomalously depleted isotopic signatures are observed during known hailstorm events. This may provide a means to trace their signature in the existing water resources. Changes in groundwater evolutionary processes due to aquifer overexploitation show a world-wide increase and have been of growing concern in recent years. The study aimed to improve the knowledge of groundwater evolutionary processes by means of stable water isotopes and hydrochemistry in a representative lake basin, Ordos energy base. Groundwater, precipitation, and lake water collected during four campaigns were analysed by stable isotopes and chemical compositions. Results showed that temperature effect predominated the isotope fractionation in precipitation, while evaporation and inadequate groundwater recharge were the key factors explaining high salinity and isotopic enrichment in lake water. Additionally, the Kuisheng Lake was a preferential area of groundwater recharge, while the Subei Lake received less sources from underlying aquifer due to the combined effects of low permeable zone and upstream groundwater captured by the production wells. The homogeneous isotope signatures of groundwater may be ascribed to the closely vertical hydraulic connectivity between the unconfined and the confined aquifers. Isotopically enriched groundwater pumping from well field probably promoted isotopic depletion in groundwater depression cone. These findings not only provide the conceptual framework for the inland basin, but also have important implications for sustainable groundwater management in other groundwater discharge basins with arid climate. Karst springs in the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains and the Crimean Piedmont show a restricted range of values (δ18O = –10.5 to –8.0 ‰, δ2H = –72 to –58 ‰), somewhat more negative than the weighted mean of meteoric precipitation. This suggests preferential recharge at higher elevations during winter months. Groundwater tapped by boreholes splits in three groups. A first group has isotopic properties similar to those of the springs. The second group shows significantly lower values (δ18O = –13.3 to –12.0 ‰, δ2H = –95 to –82 ‰), suggesting recharge during colder Pleistocene times. The third group has high isotope values (δ18O = –2.5 to +1.0 ‰, δ2H = –24 to –22 ‰); the data points are shifted to the right of the Local Meteoric Water Line, suggesting water–rock exchange processes in the aquifer. These boreholes are located in the Crimean Plains and discharge mineralized (ca. 25 g L−1) thermal (65°C) water from a depth of 1600–1800 m. Groundwater associated with mud volcanoes on the Kerch peninsula have distinct isotope characteristics (δ18O = –1.6 to +9.4 ‰, δ2H = –30 to –18 ‰). The Lake Chad Basin (LCB) is an endorheic transboundary catchment highly vulnerable to drought. For effective groundwater management, recharge areas need identification and replenishment quantification. At present, little research exploring unsaturated zone water flow processes and groundwater recharge are available. In this study, 12 vertical soil profiles were analysed for stable water isotopes and chloride concentration to estimate evaporation and groundwater renewal. Most δ18O and δ2H isotope profiles reveal typical arid environment patterns, with maximum enrichment at depths between 2.5 and 20 cm and depletion towards the surface (atmospheric influence) and depth (mixing and diffusion). Average annual dry season evaporation rates in Salamat and Waza Logone range from 5 to 30 mm, in Bahr el Ghazal and Northern Lake Chad from 14 to 23 mm. According to the chloride mass balance (CMB), the average annual recharge rate is estimated between 3 and 163 mm in Salamat and Waza Logone and less than 1 mm in Bahr el Ghazal and Northern Lake Chad. Based on the CMB results, potential recharge sites were identified, while estimated soil evaporation corresponds to plant water use at the initial growing stage, which is an important component in irrigation water management. Inspired by a previous 'Sauna, sweat and science' study [Zech et al. Isot Environ Health Stud. 2015;51(3):439–447] and out of curiosity and enthusiasm for stable isotope and sauna research we aimed at answering the question 'do we sweat (isotopically) what we drink'? We, therefore, pulse-labelled five test persons in a sauna experiment with beverages that were 2H-enriched at about +25,600 ‰. Sweat samples were collected during six sauna rounds and the hydrogen isotope composition δ2Hsweat was determined using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Before pulse labelling, δ2Hsweat – reflecting by approximation body water – ranged from –32 to –22 ‰. This is ∼35 ‰ enriched compared to usual mid-European drinking water and can be explained with hydrogen-bearing food as well as with the respiratory loss of 2H-depleted vapour. The absence of a clearly detectable 2H pulse in sweat after pulse labelling and δ2Hsweat results of ≤+250 ‰ due to a fast 2H equilibration with body water are moreover a clearly negative answer to our research question also in a short-term consideration. Given that the recovery of the tracer based on an isotope mass balance calculation is clearly below 100 %, we finally answer the question 'where did the rest of the tracer go?' Stable isotopes of water (δ2H, δ18O) and δ13CTIC were used as a tool to trace the recharge processes, natural carbon (organic and inorganic) source and dynamics in the aquifers of the central Gangetic basin, India. Stable isotope (δ2H, δ18O) record of groundwater (n = 105) revealed that the groundwater of Piedmont was recharged by meteoric origin before evaporation, while aquifers of the older and younger alluvium were recharged by water that had undergone evaporation loss. River Ganges and its tributaries passing through this area have very little contribution in recharging while ponds play no role in the recharging of adjacent aquifers. The connectivity of shallow aquifers of aquitard formation (comprised of clay/sandy clay with thin patches of fine grey sand), i.e. 25–60 m below ground level (bgl) with the main upper aquifer (at a depth of >120 m bgl) was found to be higher in older and younger alluvium. Negative values of δ13CTIC (median −9.6 ‰; range −13.2 to −5.4 ‰) and high TIC (median 35 mM; range 31–46 mM) coupled with low TOC (median 1.35 mg/L; range 0.99–1.77 mg/L) indicated acceleration in microbial activity in the younger alluvium, especially in the active floodplain of river Ganges and its proximity. Coastal regions, and in particular islands where precipitation from clouds formed out at sea occurs for the first time, are prime candidates for regions where 2H and 18O composition of precipitation will deviate significantly from the global mean geographic and physiographic trends of vapour-transport patterns. The results reported here are the outcome of a study that aimed to test this hypothesis by 'isotopographically' mapping the characteristic δ2H and δ18O signatures of Scottish freshwaters. The resulting isotope abundance landscapes or 'isoscapes' will underpin studies aiming to authenticate origin of Scottish produce but may also offer a baseline against which environmental changes could be assessed. Between April 2011 and May 2012 freshwater samples were collected from 127 different freshwater lochs and reservoirs across Scotland, and analysis results were compared to precipitation data provided by the British Geological Survey. Here we present the results of the 2H and 18O analyses of these water samples as well as the first detailed Scotland freshwater isoscapes with a grid resolution of about 5 × 5 km (0.05 degrees). The mean residence time of soil water (MRTsw) for forestland and shrubland in a water source area of Yuanyang Terrace, southwestern China, was estimated using stable isotope tracer tests and the sine-wave regression model. Stable isotope analyses from precipitation and soil water were performed in 2015. The δ2H/δ18O relationship of precipitation resulted in δ2H = 7.31δ18O + 1.49, which is nearly identical to the local meteoric water line in Kunming, southwestern, China. The MRTsw was simulated at five depth ranges (0–20, 20–40, 40–60, 60–80, 80–100 cm) of the two vegetation types by precipitation δ18O input data and soil water δ18O output data. The results showed that the MRTsw values of the forestland and shrubland both increased with soil depth. However, differences in the MRTsw of the forestland (between day 53 and 94) and of the shrubland (between day 76 and 142) were discussed. Regarding the physical properties of the soil profiles from the sample plots, non-capillary porosity decreased with soil depth in the forestland (from 48.5 to 20.5 %), and was clearly higher than that in the shrubland (from 38.8 to 18.7 %). The study area is the Namibian part of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin (CEB), located in central northern Namibia. The CEB is home to 40 % of Namibia’s population, and most of the people live in rural areas. These people depend on both surface and groundwater resources which are limited in this dryland (mean annual rainfall ranging from 250 to 550 mm/a). The isotopic signatures of δ18O and δ2H from water samples (n = 61) collected over a course of 9 years from various research projects and existing (but mainly unpublished) data of meteoric water of the CEB (10 sites) were evaluated and local meteoric water lines (LMWLs) developed. Further, the data is discussed in the context of seasonal characteristics and trends and compared to available data from the Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) for the southern African region. Our results extend the portfolio of previously published LMWLs for southern Africa and provide a more precise baseline for any isotope-based study in that region. The slope of the LMWL from the GNIP stations correlates with latitude. This correlation cannot be found within the CEB. We used pore water samplers (PWS) to sample for isotope analysis (1) only water, (2) soil under laboratory conditions, and (3) soil in the field comparing the results with cryogenic extraction (CE). In (1) and (2), no significant differences between source and water extracted with PWS were detected with a mean absolute difference (MAD) always lower than 2 ‰ for δ2H and 1 ‰ for δ18O. In (2), CE water was more enriched than PWS-extracted water, with a MAD respect to source water of roughly 8 ‰ for δ2H and 4 ‰ for δ18O. In (3), PWS water was enriched relative to CE water by 3 ‰ for δ2H and 0.9 ‰ for δ18O. The latter result may be due to the distinct water portions sampled by the two methods. Large pores, easily sampled by PWS, likely retain recent, and enriched, summer precipitation while small pores, only sampled by CE, possibly retain isotopically depleted water from previous winter precipitation or irrigation inputs. Accuracy and precision were greater for PWS relative to CE. Ratios of stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen (2H/1H and 18O/16O) in river waters were measured to investigate the hydrological pathway of the Xijiang River, Southwest China. The δ2H and δ18O values of river waters exhibit significant spatial and temporal variations and the isotopic compositions vary with elevation, temperature and precipitation of the recharge area. Spatially, δ18O values of river waters from high mountain areas are lower than those from the lower reaches of the Xijiang River due to lower temperature and higher elevation for the recharge area. However, both 2H and 18O are enriched differently in river waters from the middle reaches during the high flow season, depending on the season and degree of anthropogenic disturbances (e.g. water impoundments). In contrast, deuterium excess (d-excess) values of waters from the middle reaches are substantially lower than those from the upper and lower reaches, suggesting that river waters may be resided in the reservoir and evaporation increases in the middle reaches of the Xijiang River. Stable isotopes of hydrogen (2H) and oxygen (18O) of the water molecule were used to assess the relationship between precipitation, surface water and groundwater in a large Russia/Ukraine trans-boundary river basin. Precipitation was sampled from November 2013 to February 2015, and surface water and groundwater were sampled during high and low flow in 2014. A local meteoric water line was defined for the Ukrainian part of the basin. The isotopic seasonality in precipitation was evident with depletion in heavy isotopes in November-March and an enrichment in April-October, indicating continental and temperature effects. Surface water was enriched in stable water isotopes from upstream to downstream sites due to progressive evaporation. Stable water isotopes in groundwater indicated that recharge occurs mainly during winter and spring. A one-year data set is probably not sufficient to report the seasonality of groundwater recharge, but this survey can be used to identify the stable water isotopes framework in a weakly gauged basin for further hydrological and geochemical studies.
